Default 3 - Girding Potion

Hecate was sitting in the classroom, just thinking it seems. She was thinking of many things and many people... She was thinking of her husbands, and of her career... things settled down... She sighed. She looked at the seats and table... She saw kids grow up in those seats.

Maybe she didn't create another famous potion... but she helped mold the witches and wizards of tomorrow...

She cast on the door, and it unlocked. Time for the last class of the term.

Soon the potion turned pink, much to Sarah's delight. She liked that color, really. It was one of the really cool things about potions, the awesome colours that were made. Yet still Sarah felt potions so stressful.

She then began adding the dragonfly thoraxes. One by one, ying the colour. On the one hand she wanted the potion to work and turn red, yet she
Liked it being pink.it was a pretty pink too.

Yet after nineteen were put in the potion turned red.

And.. andddddd.. BLUE. Alice had to prod at the flame a bit before her potion shifted hues, but it was blue all the same. she pushed away the ten unheated thoraxes- she didn't need those until later, yes?- and began to count the remaining twenty toasted ones.

She began slipping the thoraxes into her cauldron again. The first five caused no change in color. After dropping another nine in, Alice could swear she saw the potion becoming a bit more shiny, but it really hadn't turned silvery in the slightest. She dished out four more, which totaled up to nineteen, the number of dragonfly thoraxes that had caused her potion to change hues before. And, finally, she dropped the next to last of them in the cauldron. silver yet? Yes, yes, it was.

His tone was distracted as he said this...because he was focusing on dividing up the dragonfly thoraxes.

One pile of twenty for now...and then another twenty for later...and the 10 unheated ones for next to last step...

Taking the first pile of toasted thoraxes, Dylan carefully started slipping them into the potion...and this took several moments since it was twenty of them in one go.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen....

After the eighteenth one, the Slytherin noticed that the potion's color was beginning to darken from the pink color...but it wasn't totally red. Professor Lafay had said something about maybe only needing one or two less that twenty...but that clearly wasn't the case here.

....nineteen, twenty...

When he added the last one in, the color turned into a rich red, satisfying the directions. Rereading them just to see what he needed to do next, he settled back...playing the waiting game. It needed to be blue, now...

It was definitely strange...He'd never seen one potion turn so many didn't colors throughout the course of brewing it.

Finally...it slowly shifted into the blue it was supposed to...SUCCESS thus far.

What was next?

"You don't necessarily have to beat them off with it. Just.. just to scare them off." Besides, being the pragmatic person that she was, the fourteen year old knew that threatening worked just as nicely. She spoke to him distractedly, focusing on heating her potion now. It was meant to be red, yes? Then she must have been doing it right, because after a couple of moments spent prodding at her flame again, it had shifted back.

Last ingredient...

Salamander Blood.

Alec stood there, taking deep breaths as he looked between his green potion and the small vial of salamander blood in his hand. Now he had two main questions about this; a) would this work? and b) how much salamander blood did he need? Because the amount he added in would affect the potion right? And the actual ingredient would affect the potion as well.

... This was hard.

But time was ticking. The fifteen year old took another deep breath as he opened the vial of salamander blood. "Twenty seconds of courage... twenty seconds of embarrassing bravery..." ... Or... something. That was what Tag had told him right?

Oh right. Twenty seconds.

Plucking up some courage from... somewhere, Alec emptied the vial into the cauldron. There. Done. Now he just had to wait, right?

So she had to add in the remaining measure of Doxy eggs now that her potion was hte proper color that is. So she counted out three sets of three and smiled to herself. Yep let the plunking begin.

She picked one up and sploosh it dropped into the potion, and another splunk that one was in the potion too! Now nine more to do. So she picked up the third one and dropped it in.

And then plunked the rest in one by one.

Until low and behold the potion was nearly finished. Now she just had four more things to do and her grinding potion would be finished.

"I'd like you to go get the ingredients. And then get one more. One ingredient of your choosing. And add it to the potion. Do not tell me why you added that particular ingredient or what the potion is now capable of doing... Just brew it. Ask me any question you wish during. Just don't ask if you are doing it right."

ooc: This potion should be brewed in 8 posts. Feel free to ask question, I'll answer once a day.

It was only a few minutes later, and Mo's potion was already turning from red to a nice burgundy to a pleasing purple to blue again. It was a shame it couldn't just stay that way, but perhaps his final-and-secret ingredient would make it turn some really awesome shade. And make it glow-in-the-dark. And sparkle.

Now that he was so close, Mo would have to seriously consider his extra special ingredient. He pondered that conundrum as he dropped the three flying seahorses into the potion. One... two... and finally THREE. So that was all the main ingredients, and the colors were good so far.

Mo settled back on his haunches as he heated the potion once again, and as he waited for it to turn green, Mo mentally ran through his options. What would he like to add to his potion to make it extra-specially his? Oh, LOOK. Green.

With all of the Doxy eggs in the potion Mika really wanted to know what her secret ingredient would be. She had no idea. Maybe hair - some other persons hair? A bit of lavender to make it smell like perfect and all that wonderous stuff.

So what she did was simple.

She took the ten non-toasted dragonfly thoraxes and dropped them each into the cauldron. One at a time her smile growing wider and wider and wider.

She couldn't wait.

SECRET INGREDIENT. She was excited. "Incendio" she pointed her wand at the cauldron one more time and waited as it heated. Oh look! It was blue again.

"........And if threatening doesn't work?"...because it had been his experience that when someone wanted something (or someone) and had the mentality of a Slytherin...nothing stopped them. Dylan himself was proof of that...

Side-glancing his notes, again...he pulled the second pile of toasted thoraxes closer. He hasn't realized that these two steps were one after the other...Probably because the Slytherin was so bent on getting the color right. Rainbow potion was what it should've been called. "I've never brewed anything that changes so many different colors during the process." Dylan couldn't figure out why this annoyed him so much...but it did.

One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, twenty...

He didn't even stop to see if the colors were changing before he added the entire twenty...because Dylan knew in the end, he'd just end up adding them all anyway. So, it was cutting out that observation step. Ahem.

As the directions stated...the potion was now a soft silver due to the second wave of dragonfly thoraxes...meaning all he had to do now was wait for it to heat back to that bright red color. Everything was coming along rather smoothly. There hadn't been any bumps in the road...

Even thought some idiot had already blown up a potion this lesson. SNORT.

...When it did shift back to red, the Slytherin started pulling the doxy eggs.

Those were next...

Then she turned up the heat again and stole a glance around the room.

Everyone else seemed involved in their potions. At different stages too. Some were even finished!

Then she cast a look back at her brew. It was blue already, that meant was time to move on. She counted out another twenty of them and put them into a pile. She the. Began to put each one in. This time it took twenty to turn silver. Sarah wondered what produced the different colours. Like how heat can turn it blue. She was not going to ask Lafay, as she would make Sarah feel stupid, yet perhaps she would look I up in the library or if that didn't help just ask west, he seemed to know a lot.

Ingredients:

Water to fill the cauldron
50 Dragonfly thoraxes (40 toasted/10 unheated)
One set of Fairy wings (2)
3 Flying Seahorses
12 Doxy eggs (Divided in 4 measures of 3)

Personal ingredient: Powdered Peruvian Vipertooth Fang.
Peruvian Vipertooth Dragon's are hard to come by as they are very sneaky little dragons. They also have poisonous venom filled fangs which makes the collecting of the blood much harder as they don't fare well in captivity.

Instructions:

Add the set of fairy wings
Heat until the potion turns turquoise.
Add one measure of doxy eggs. (That's 3)
Heat until the potion turns pink.
Add 20 of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes or until the potion turns red (sometimes it takes only 18 or 19, but never more than 20)
Heat until the potion turns blue.

Heat the potion until it turns red again.
Add three measures of doxy eggs. (That's the remaining 9)
Add the 10 not-toaster dragonfly thoraxes.
Heat the potion until it turns blue again.
Add three flying seahorses.
Heat until the potion turns green.

Mika smiled to herself as she looked down at her now blue potion and decided what to do next. She was still thinking about her personal ingredient. Really - she wanted this girding potion to go all smoothly.

So what she did was simple - she took the three flying seahorses and added them to her cauldron. And as she heated the potion one last time and watched the potion turn almost kelly green she thought about what to ad to her potion...So far it had been parts of animals and creatures and insects...and magical things like Doxies and fairies...maybe fairy toenails?

Nope that was just painstakingly gross and tedious. Putting on her gloves she took a vial out of her potions kit and carefully emptied it into the cauldron. She made sure her gloves, eye goggles from that now finished Astronomy assignment were snugly on her head as she watched as the cauldron made a funny rattling noise.

It didn't make such a noise as the exploding one just a slight whistling sound for a minute or so and then steam began to bellow out of the cauldron. And then nothing. The sound, the steam, it was all gone. The potion just sat still in the cauldron and not to mention it was sickeningly bright and almost neon pink.

Sarah then put up the heat again. It was meant to change colour again. And it did, to red in fact.

Then Sarah turned to her doxy eggs. There were three piles of three left. She took one pile and dropped its contents into the brew and she did the same with the next pile.
Finally she took the last pile and added those too.

She then began to look for her non toasted dragon fly thoraxes

Maybe in choosing what he wanted for his last and final ingredient, Mo needed to seriously consider what he wanted to gird. Could be his physical health and stamina, could be something to do with keeping his immune system up when he was running down... but Mo was a Ravenclaw and his brain was his most important weapon.

If he was going to gird up one of his capacities, it ought to be his logic and wit. After all, exhaustion made people sloppy and made their decisions haphazard, and Mo would rather avoid making stupid mistakes. So then... girded brain...

Mo wandered back to the potions cabinet as his potion continued to heat, working his way mentally through the options. What about... scarab beetle? Not only a key ingredient in the Wit-Sharpening potion, but also used in Skele-grow. And bones did girding too, so that seemed like some sort of logial-not-logical leap.

He brought a measure of the powdered scarab beetle back to his cauldron just in time to watch the potion turn green, at which point Mo added his beetle bits to the liquid.

"Professor?" Mo raised his hand. "Should we expect it to change color again once we add our special ingredient, or do you want us to turn down the heat?"

Anya glanced at her instruction list. Toss the rest of the toasted dragonfly things into the cauldron.

Well... essentially.

She reassumed her lazy position and began tossing in the dragonfly bits one at a time. And continued. Kept doing. Slowly her pile was dwindling.

And then suddenly it turned silver. She smiled down at the remaining two thoraxes. Cool. It only took her 18 this time. She shoved her remaining toasted dragonfly thoraxes aside and glanced down at her parchment to see what she'd need to heat the cauldron to.

Red. Okay. She could do this.

She lit her cauldron up once again using incendio. And then she waited. And waited. And waited. Then the potion turned a nice red. She removed the flame with a finite and then crossed those steps off her list of instructions.

Now that her potion was blue, Kendall paused in her doodling to separate out the rest of the toasted dragonfly thoraxes from the ones that weren’t. That was the next step, after all, considering she’d been basically looking at the instructions the whole time she’d been waiting for the potion to turn blue. They were still completely legible, too, even though she’d been doodling in the margins and on the cover a little. She knew better than to mess up the instructions to a potion that she was having to brew all by herself, and as she finished separating the thoraxes, she wondered if it was going to take all twenty again. The last time it had only taken eighteen, even if she’d put another one in to make sure, so there was the possibility that she wouldn’t need all of them this time around either. She wouldn’t know unless she started, though, so she leaned forward again so she could see the potion inside her cauldron and delicately dropped the first thorax in. Of course, the blue color didn’t change, so she continued adding more thoraxes. Checking again at around twelve, at which point the blue definitely looked like it had faded a little. It was almost a sky blue now.

She wasn’t finished yet, in any case. It was supposed to be silver, so she kept adding more thoraxes until she’d dropped the twentieth one in and she blinked. Not only was it a grayish color, but it really looked silvery. It had to just be because it was a liquid, and not that it really had turned silver. Either way, it wasn’t staying silver. It was supposed to return back to red, and that meant more waiting. Waiting and heating the potion, so she flipped to a blank page in her journal and started drawing again. She was hoping it didn’t take so long that she finished her sketch, anyway, and it was taking longer for that merely because she kept checking her potion. It had turned from silver to a faint reddish tone, but that wasn’t red yet. More waiting, but finally, upon the third check or so, it had gone back to the bright red that it had been a few steps ago. So far everything seemed to be going right.

Next step. Add the rest of those doxy eggs. Anya smiled at the remaining eggs. And one by one she carefully lowered them into the potion. She didn't want to make them splash, so she didn't just drop them in.

Four down... Five down... She continued on... Seven... Eight... NINE!

She then added in the 10 non-toasted dragonfly thoraxes as instructed. (Aww! Look now clean her workspace was getting!)

She then reignited her cauldron. Then she waited. Her potion gradually changed to a blue.

Those were another few steps done.

Doxy eggs, next, wasn't it? Three measures of them, which was nine. Alice sorted them out and began dropping them, one by one, into the cauldron. She tried not to do it from too high up, on account of it would probably splash and that wouldn't be good. 'Cause she didn't want potion in her hair like all of those people who had been standing too close when that fifth year added some peppermint to her cauldron, thanks.

One. Two. Threefourfivesixseveneightnine. That was all of them.

Sierra suddenly got the feeling that she could literally just start flailing right here in class. Of course she didn't, but that didn't stop her from feeling like she might. She was behind. Waaaay behind, actually. She just had this feeling her mom was about to call time, and she was only halfway through.

She looked down into her cauldron and noted that her brew had now turned blue. Oh, good. So she was right on track with the brewing just...behind on timing. UGHHHH. Way to go, Sierra. Way to possibly fail at your last class with your mom.

Then she began the process of adding toasting dragonfly thoraxes all over again. This time, she was aiming for a silver color instead of a red color. She dropped them in, one right after the other, until she reached eighteen. Her potion still wasn't the silver color it needed to be, so she added one more thorax. BAM. Silverrrr!

Dylan snorted, not responding immediately. Biting wasn't his thing...That was Alice's...but if she was offering to bite others to aid him...Well, that didn't seem so crazy. In fact...

No. Ahem.........That was not an appropriate thought.

Back to his work....

With his potion the bright color, again...he was ready for the next steps...which included the remaining doxy eggs. Double-checking his notes, the Slytherin made sure he wasn't waiting for anymore crazy colors. He seen that after the eggs, it was straight to the unheated thoraxes...There would be no different colors in between the two...So, Dylan had them ready.

Doxy eggs first, though.

...............3.................6...............9

After the remaining nine were slipped into the potion, he wasted no time in beginning with the thoraxes.

.........2......4..........7......9......10.

When that was finished...he settled back and waited for the potion to take on that bright blue color again. While he did so, though...."Alice, are you offering to defend my honor?" Dylan just smirked across his station at her, clearly amused still with her biting advice.

Oh, it was blue, again!

Sierra was doing much better speed-wise now. She eyed her mom out of the corner of her eye, but the woman looked busy monitoring students and didn't appear to be closing out the class anytime soon. Okay, sooo...she had this. Just a few more steps, and she'd be done.

She stood back a bit and gave the potion time to heat some more. In the meantime, she looked over the instructions to see what was left. Only five more steps after the potion turned red. No, six--she still had to add in her ginger. She looked into the cauldron and noted the color was now back to red.

With that, she started adding in the remaining nine doxy eggs. One... two...three... four... five... six... seven... eight... nine! Yup, moving on along now!

After what seemed like an eternity, Ethan's potion finally turned blue and it was time for the next step. More dragonfly thoraxes? Ok.. Once again, the boy started adding the insect parts one at a time as he watched for color changes in the potion. This time it was meant to be silver.

One, two, three, four, five.. nothing yet. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.. still blue. Eleven, twelve, thirteen.. the blue was getting lighter. Fourteen, fifteen, sixteen.. lighter still and getting a bit greyish. Seventeen, eighteen, nineteen.. now the potion looked grey, but Ethan wouldn't call it silver. He added one more toasted thorax. And now the grey turned more shimmery... yep, he'd say that was silver. Now he had to just keep it on the heat and wait till it turned red again.

...and now for more dragonfly thoraxes, except this time, it was the thoraxes that hadn't been toasted. Sierra checked her numbers and noted that this time, she only needed ten thoraxes, as opposed to the twenty she'd needed before. Good. Less work. At this point, she just needed to hurry.

One... two... three... four... five... six... seven... eight... nine... ten!

...and now she was waiting again. This time, the brew needed to be blue again. Yup. She definitely felt like she was brewing an Easter egg. She glanced around the room, noting that a few others were still finishing up. Good. She hated being last. By the time she looked back into her cauldron, the brew had turned blue, so she was ready to move on to the next step.

Alice was almost finished. Almostalmostalmost. She just needed to add her seahorses to the potion and wait for it to turn green again, yes? And then add her scarab beetles, which she still had to fetch. The fourteen year old grabbed the first of the pile of flying animals and carefully dropped it into her cauldron, leaning away as to not catch a face full of the potion. She waited until it was safe to lean again, and then repeated her actions with the other two seahorses.

Now.. what, turn up the heat?

"Defend your honor?" Alice gave Dylan curious looks as she poked at her flame, waiting for her potion to shift hues. "What, like bite girls who try to attack your hair? Would you pay me? D'you think I'd get in trouble?" She was seriously considering this. It seemed like it would be a good full-time occupation. She didn't MIND being around Dylan, plus biting things was fun. And if he would pay her, even better.

But she digressed. Her potion was GREEN. Which meant beetles!

Three flying seahorses, that was what she needed.

She smiled to herself, realized she was going to brew this in time after all. After the seahorses, all she needed to do at that point was let the potion heat until it turned green and then add in her extra ingredient--ginger.

She reached for the seahorses then began adding them in one at a time. She watched then swirl into the brew until they were thoroughly mixed in. A that point, she just waited while she allowed the potion time to cool.

Finally, she looked in and saw that her potion as green. Normally, this would be the end of the brewing process, but since she'd been told to add in an extra ingredient, she just needed to do one more thing.

And now it was red. Time to move on to the next step. Ethan consulted his notes again to see that the remaining Doxy eggs needed to be added. He reached over to grab the eggs from his procured ingredient stash and dumped them into the cauldron. Now what? Another color change? Ugh, no.. more dragonfly thoraxes. This time the non-toasted ones.

Again, the boy dropped them in, one at a time, watching for any change.. though he realized nothing was supposed to happen right away till it sat on the heat longer. One, two, three, four, five.. sigh. He was pretty sure he was going to be dreaming of adding dragonfly thoraxes tonight.. Six, seven, eight, nine, ten.. done with that part, finally. Now to keep it on the heat till it changed color again. he was pretty surprised he hadn't had to stir it yet..

SPOILER!!: Ethan's journal

Dylan was thoughtful for a moment before smirking. Of course, she probably would get into a lot of trouble...and as a leader, that was unfair of him to ask...Also, he couldn't extort her biting-skill. That was a quidditch thing. Kinda like Odessa's headbutting.

SNORT. Dangerous pair...The Slytherin believed them to be quite perfect for one another...if they'd just admit as much. He knew that West and Bliss were together...but in reality, he was too aggressive to date a Hufflepuff. It was just the honest facts. Merlin, he had a ton of opinions on the matter...

"Ahem..." because if Alice wanted, they could talk about it further outside of lessons and all that. No need to risk being overheard...just in case.

Anyway, the Captain's potion was moving into his final stages...So, he was almost done. BAM! Skimming over his written-directions, Dylan seen he needed the three flying seahorses. He'd never personally worked with these as an ingredient before...So, he was kinda unsure about what it offered as an individual element. Hmmmmmm...

Taking each, he dropped them in, one by one. After the third flying seahorse had been added, Dylan was done. All that was left was to wait for it to heat to green...and then just add his extra ingredient, right? Had Professor Lafay mentioned special instructions for that?

Waiting, waiting, waiting...

FINALLY...when it turned green, Dylan marked up his parchment and started preparing his lobalug venom...

IT WAS ALMOST TIME!
