Default Transfiguration Lesson Two

Once more as you enter you see the mannequins you used in the last lesson stood by the desks. They still have your names on, so make sure you sit by the right one - no hiding at the back if yours isn't there.

But this time there is something else in the room. Behind Professor Magnus' desk is a large wooden wall she has placed there. Upon that wall she has stuck - not permanently though - all the tops you made for your homework, so you can see them. They can be used as inspiration for what you create in class today, whether you want something that will match or something completely at odds with your top design, is up to you.

For now though Professor Magnus is perched on the edge of the front of her desk ready to welcome you. Please take a seat.

OOC: I'm opening the thread now so you can have your character enter, but the actual lesson will not begin until about 4pm GMT tomorrow (16 hours from now, roughly). Feel free to talk among yourselves, but please don't go overboard. ^__^

And there's Professor Magnus! Definitely high on his list for Favorite Professor Award. Except Auntie Fina, of course. She HAD to be number one. No questions asked. "Ciao, Professor! You're looking very..." The vibrant red dress was like a blaring foghorn for his eyes. "...red, today!" He blushed deeply and swiftly found his place next to his mannequin. He noted it was still labeled LOGAN MANCINI. Sigh.
Logan was adorable. Or Pao. She must remember to call him the name he wanted. Maybe change the nameplate when he wasn't looking. Anyway, Issy grinned at him when he came over before finding his seat.

Red? Ohhhh, right yes. Her dress. She chuckled slightly at his blushing and nodded her head. "Well, thank you, Mister Mancini." I think.

Isabelle popped off the desk and wandered over to the door, closing it behind the last entrant. Anyone coming in now would be late and feel her wrath. Well points loss anyway. But moving on. Walking back up the aisle to her desk, Issy turned and smiled at all the kids.

"Good morning everyone. Now, before we start on the spell for this lesson, I'd like you all to tell me how you feel you got on with the last spell? I noticed some of you did very well in making things that had some good detail on them," she said, gesturing to the wall set up at the front of the room. Quite pretty, with words and sparkles and everything.

"Doing things with more detail is tricky, especially when transfiguring clothing, which is why you don't often find people making elaborate items. Did any of you come across problems that you had to overcome?" Because if they did, maybe she could help with that. Plus this little talk first would get them into 'lesson mode' before launching into the good stuff.

When the Professor began talking Alexa made her way over to desk with the mannequin that was waiting for her. Sooner or later they would have to be friends..she just chose later.

Taking a seat, she ensured that her head was turned away from the bloody thing and she focused, instead, on the Professor. "I don't think I did so badly...it took a while but at least I got it!" And now she was smiling because she remembered just how hard she had worked in the last class to get that spell to work. "The spell was being kinda difficult though..." It had taken her nearly a million tries and all but who was complaining? "I think one of the biggest problems was finding which way the Z was supposed to go..." And she wasn't ashamed to admit that because quite frankly Z's were pretty hard stuff.

Good. She didn't sound weirded out. Because... he'd kind of panicked. He just hadn't wanted to say anything that would make his possibly favorite professor think he was weird... which of course meant he ended up saying something stupid.

But at least it made him feel better to hear her say that the details were tricky. He pulled out a fresh sheaf of parchment and dipped the nib of his quill into the pot of maroon ink he favored and reserved for the best information. Poised and ready, he realized they were first going to start with a bit of a Q&A session about the homework.

But he then stuck his hand up in the air, the bravery of which was somewhat startling to him. She's looking at me! Shoot, what was I going to say? His mind wiped almost magically blanked, he opened his mouth and began to sort of sputter. "I- Well I guess- The-MY shirt was.." Get a grip, Mancini! He coughed. "I had a bit of trouble getting my size right, Professor. I, um.. I think it's probably still a bit too big, honestly."

He let his hand flop down to his side as dead weight. The resulting smacking sound when his limb made contact with the desk was quite loud, and the inked quill was sent flying onto the floor. "Sorry," he mumbled to Magnus, acutely aware that half the class was probably watching this latest display of clumsiness. The Italian dove under the desk to retrieve his feathered foe, sincerely wishing he knew a good Invisibility Spelll at the moment.

Had there been any problems when Sierra had done her homework? Well, yeah, but she wasn't exactly excited about sharing them. Having problems meant a certain degree of failure in Sierra's eyes, so she wasn't too quick to volunteer the details. At the same time, though, she was curious as to why the problems had happened in the first place, so she guessed it wouldn't be too bad to ask about them.

"Professor? How easy is it to control exactly what the shirt looks like in the end? I thought I did such a good job picturing just what I wanted the shirt to look like, but when it appeared, it was a different version if what I'd pictured," she said, raising her hand. "I wanted a striped, rainbow shirt, and instead, the first shirt I got was a tie-dyed rainbow shirt. I had to do the spell a second time to get what I'd pictured."

Alec blinked at the t-shirts on the wall, trying his hardest not to look at his own. It was a bit... awkward, really. His looked terrible compared to some of the others! And pretty plain, now that he thought about it. As ever when he was somewhat confused or nervous, the third year ruffled his hair, a confused expression crossing his face.

But then... a small voice spoke up and Alec turned his head to the boy sitting beside him. Pao. What an amazing kid. And talented too, by the looks of it. The fourteen year old smiled at Pao's answer. Yeah, he was pretty small, wasn't he? So for him, getting it down to size would be difficult. Alec, however, was pretty tall for his age so... that wasn't something he had found too difficult.

Oh! But, he should answer, yes? "Erm... Professor?" he said, lifting his hand in the air, "I found the detailing really hard, especially at first." There was a LOT of confusion then. "And... and... yeah, everything came out a bit weird when I wasn't concentrating properly." Might as well be honest, yeah?

Annabelle pondered the professor's question for a little bit and then answered it. "Professor i think doing the simple coloring of the t shirts was easier than doing the patterns. The simple colors you can think of easily and transform it. With the patterns, i had to concentrate even harder." At least Belle was honest with what she did. "It was hard to do the spell at first though i will admit."

"I ended up making the same shirt that I had made in the last lesson. Had to redo the spell...." Emmanuelle piped up. It had been extremely irritating too. She hadn't wanted to make the same shirt again, obviously. "But I think I did pretty well the second time." Despite the fact that she still thought she had put too many stars on the thing. It looked awesomely reto to her.

Well...

"I kind of did have a problem, Professor, with my first attempt because the spell didn't really make an effect,"Kat said. "But I was able to overcome it and the spell worked well since then."

It's true. It was quite difficult with the focusing hard part of the spell. People get out of their minds sometimes. But... yeah.

How had she done? Awesome, hopefully. Vivi considered her time working the spell with Kurumi before raising her hand to offer her own observations. "It seemed like some types of materials were hard or nearly impossible to transfigure using this spell, which could be limiting, I suppose. Can you make metal rivets or zippers from the original material, Professor? I had a lot of trouble with zippers."

Jory did have problems. He remembered how he had trouble creating the design for the homework. He raised his hand. "Professor, I had a difficult time with the details of the designs. Though transfiguring the bag just to a plain Tee shirt or jersey is much easier.'' He supposed a rather simple design would be just as easy.

Listening to Professor Magnus for a moment, Kurumi's eyes lingered over towards her mannequin - or Kurumiquin as Vivi had helped her name it. How had the entire thing gone? It hadn't been all that bad...minus one detail...

Bingo. That right there.

Nodding her head as Vivi spoke Kurumi ended up raising her hand more subconsciously and before she realized that she had, her hand was fully raised. Oh, she should probably speak then. "I had the same problem, professor," Kurumi said, her head still nodding up and down. "I found that trying to transfigure elements that were not fabric based either just didn't work or came out wonky. I ended up using Covadium on the broach bit."

Oh yeah-- she had a tough time with the spell at first. Orr blushed as she thought of her mishaps.

She sheepishly put up her hand and waited for Professor Magnus to call on her "Well, it was tricky for me at first-- even once I learned how to pronounce the incantation properly, getting the Z shape right took a while. I kept on transfiguring the wrong things by accident. I eventually got the hang of things."

Cassia sat musing at her mannequin. She was really proud that she had been able to make it look like this. And then the professor started. She turned her gaze from her the sculpture and paid attention to what the professor was saying. Did very well. Cassia beamed at that considering that she was among those who did well. That the best she could do.

She paused formatting words on her brain. No need to babble telling the class everything she had gone through while working on the t-shirt. Raising her hand, she cleared her throat and spoke up. "I had trouble focusing on the design I decided on and focusing on the wand movement at the same time." Well, she couldn't focus on too many things. She could barely focus on one without getting distracted. "But then I managed to draw the design and hang it where I could look at it when preforming the spell. It made it easier to imagine it as a real top." That was a sum up to what she did. She wasn't going to babble. Yup, she was able not to sometimes.

Did he have any questions? Well he had several at the time he was making that shirt, but all has turned out rather well didnt it? He paused to listen to other students' questions before a thought occurred to him. Up goes the hand "Professor, what should we do if we want to create different types of layers for item of clothing... like for example a leather jacket but lined with fleece? Do we have to stick two plastic bags together or is there another way to achieve that effect?"

Minerva watched as others came in. Looking at her shirt she couldn't help but give a small smile. She really enjoyed making it and helping Ethan was not a bad bonus either. Feeling her cheeks blush a bit,she forced herself out of her thoughts and back to class.

Hmmm.. What went wrong, what was easy.. Well she thought about that. The biggest thing that went wrong is Elliot being there, but this entire term Elliot has been what is wrong, but that's not what Professor Magnus would want to hear. Putting up her hand, "Professor, I think it was more of a concentration thing that was going wrong. If there was some distractions I found myself messing up my visual, and then the shirt would not come out exactly right." Yes and if your enemy and your crush in the same room wasn't distraction enough, nothing would be. She then heard a student say about size, she didn't even think about that. Looking at her shirt, she thought it would fit, hoped would be maybe a better word now..

Hmm...she heard Sierra's...problem Right. That was Elliot's problem as well. She raised her hand, "Professor, I had the same trouble as Sierra. Is it just because we need more practice?" she asked, sure that THAT haaaad to be it. Because her shirt was SUPPOSED to be a certain material...that was the hardest bit..to get it to be the right material...but it kept changing into similar materials. And the ruffles had been hard to get, too. "Also, the material was hard to get just right," she added, with a nod.

Yep.

And yes, Minnie, we know you're talking about us...Elliot smirked and tried her best not to say...anything. Or look too pleased/smug with herself. hehehe. She loved annoying that puffer...it sure did make her happy.

Sick.

Right. Elliot didn't pretend to be an angel.

Laura looked at the Professor. "I think that it went alright." Laura smiled, she was sure it had, well if she hadn't done too good then a door would have been blow up or something weird like that, it always happened to her and she didn't know why.

"It was okay" Nigel said shrugging. He felt he could have done better. But at least he made a shirt. He wanted a batman shirt. But apparently. He was just not skilled enough to make a shirt that awesome yet.

Sarah thought about the question. She did really think about all the hurdles she had to come as especially important or gave it much though, she just thought it was normal. She put up her hand, "I think the hard part for me was deciding what to make in the first place and the fact that one cannot change their design midspell. Sometimes I changed the design midspell and it went horribly wrong..." Sarah, who liked making up as she went along remembered when she was making those shirts for gryffindor, how the first time when she could not make up her mind about sleeve length, the sleeves came out skew.

Huh? What?

Ohh! Right. Blonde Red moment. Giggling at her own forgetful-ness Reesmee finally gave Bee her attention and nodded slightly as she realized that the Ravenclaw was one hundred percent correct. Her mannequin was there and her mannequin was what she would be working with today, which was why she needed to stand by it. The red head collected her things and rushed over. "Thanks." She whispered and then class began, which meant focus time began too.

How she felt she got on with the last spell? Well it wasn't too. ...

What was that?

There was a big bang coming from somewhere in the classroom, and it was then Ness spotted her little Pao in a bit of commotion. She really wanted to just get up and give the poor little boy a hug or something, he must have been beyond embarrassed. Good thing nothing worse happened. The little kid seemed alright it seemed.

Back to answering the Professor's question. Ness looked at Bee for a short moment and then regained her focus. "Professor, It wasn't too hard in my opinion. At first, in class, I struggled as for the actual assignment I think I did alright, but then my shirt wasn't too detailed." She did that on purpose obviously, because she didn't think it was necessary to make things harder than they were.

And now she was smiling because she remembered just how hard she had worked in the last class to get that spell to work. "The spell was being kinda difficult though..." It had taken her nearly a million tries and all but who was complaining? "I think one of the biggest problems was finding which way the Z was supposed to go..." And she wasn't ashamed to admit that because quite frankly Z's were pretty hard stuff.

Folding her arms, Issy leant against her desk ready to listen to the replies. She had an idea there might be a few of them, and there was.

First up, Alexa.

"Well the Z is done in the same way you would write one down," she said, flicking her own wand out to demonstrate. "But it does need to be quite tight and sharp, yes. Like so..." Issy did her Zorro impression, and nodded at the Gryffindor to make sure she'd got it.

Ahh, yes. Sizing. For most of them the size of the rubbish bags had been about right to start with, but Pao was quite a small boy. And he was only a first year after all.

"Your ability to change the size a bit better will come with time and practice. I really wouldn't worry too much about that."

"Not that easy if you go for a design that has multiple colours or patterns, as you found the first time. The thing is, you need to hold your concentration until the very end of the incantation - preferably until the transformation has taken place actually." Isabelle scratched her chin and looked up at the wall of shirts towards Sierra's. She'd certainly done better the second time around.

"The tie-dyed effect probably happened because the separating lines between the colours blurred at some point in your mind. You got there in the end though, I see."

But then... a small voice spoke up and Alec turned his head to the boy sitting beside him.

"And that is why transfiguration is one of the harder subjects to master. it requires a lot more concentration to make the spell work a hundred percent," Issy smiled.

"It was hard to do the spell at first though i will admit."

"Trying something simple is always going to be easier, as there are less parts to focus on. But I'm glad all of you went the way of making your tops a little detailed." Proud. That was the word.

Can you make metal rivets or zippers from the original material, Professor? I had a lot of trouble with zippers."

Mhmmm, zippers, yes.

"Zippers are possible, yes, but because of their design with the teeth that interlock, they are very hard. So I'm not surprised you had a little trouble with them. Materials that are more solid are harder to produce using this spell, it's designed more to transform softer materials," Isabelle said, unfolding her arms and resting her hands on her desk. "But it's not completely impossible."

Yes. She thought a few of them might have this problem. It wasn't much of a surprise, as she'd said to Vivienne, and she nodded along as Kurumi explained what she'd done to make her brooch.

"You need to be extremely confident in your spell-casting to get more solid things using this spell, it's true. As I said to Miss Branxton just then, it can be done, but it takes more hard work."

Ahh, someone that used their noggin to get it done. Issy was impressed. Although she wouldn't necessarily be able to do that every time she wanted to use the spell. But when she was just starting out, it was a good idea.

"I like the way you think, Miss Somerlad. Pinning up your design, and being able to see it at the same time as performing the spell, was a good idea. Using a visual reference is what I thought might help you all."

Do we have to stick two plastic bags together or is there another way to achieve that effect?"

Good question, Mister Vanderbilt.

"If you just wanted a lining in a different material one bag should be enough, but obviously you'd need to be incredibly clear in your mind on the different parts of the item otherwise they might come out merged and wrong," Isabelle nodded, hoping it made sense.

Because her shirt was SUPPOSED to be a certain material...that was the hardest bit..to get it to be the right material...but it kept changing into similar materials. Yep.

Right. Elliot didn't pretend to be an angel.

"Uhuh, yeah. See, the spell can only do what your mind orders it to. If you just say the words and wiggle your wand nothing will happen. So you need to be a hundred percent clear what it is you want, to get what you want. No wavering from it." Which was obviously easier said than done.

Oh good, that makes me feel better, actually. She made it sound like that was a normal problem to be experiencing, actually. He was glad that she had realistic expectations for them. Because there was NO way he could ever perform the same level magic as, say, Kurumi Hollingberry.

So bottoms this week. He had already spent a little bit of time thinking about what he wanted to do for this. The Italian shook his head in response to her to indicate that he didn't have any questions.

Alexa gave an inaudible sigh of relief when the Professor didn't get upset at her for saying what most others might have found to be a 'silly' problem. To her it was very much real, even had her confused for a while so she was quite pleased when Professor Magnus took the time out to demonstrate the proper technique when dealing with the 'Z'.

She watched her every move keenly and gave a small nod. Just to make sure she had it she lifted her wand and tried the Z shape herself...okay...she had it. "Thank you Professor!" BEAM. Now she had one less thing to worry about.

She wasn't sure if she was understanding at first so with furrowed brows she raised her hand. "...So then...you expected us to fail so that we could learn...?" She would have never thought a Professor would take that course when teaching a lesson but she had to admit it made sense. Half the things she learnt were threw trial and error.

As for any questions about what they would be doing next, she had none. For now she would wait to see how the lesson went.

Belle's eyes widened. She was excited to make a whole outfit. It would make her life so much easier. She knew she was definitely gonna try to make a skirt and shorts.

The Professor asked if they had any questions. Belle did not really have any to be honest. She wanted to learn the spell first and then if problem occur she will ask questions later.
