Connected to the Care of Magical Creatures Barn sits a stone building of about the same size that will be used as a temporary Fire Crab Sanctuary. There are no windows located anywhere on the building, so until you actually walk through the double doors, you won't know what awaits you. Stalls, all magically charmed to resemble the Fijian Rainforest, line the walls and house.. you guessed it; Fire Crabs! The very same Fire Crabs that you worked with during the first lesson, to be exact.
There are name tags located on each and every stall door, and once you make the very difficult choice of which Fire Crab you would like to call your own for the remainder of the term, it'd be wise to put it to use. In the very back of the building, a large cabinet can be found, with everything you will need to take care of your creature inside.
I'd be careful patching up the Fire Crabs, though. But don't worry too much. The stall is completely fireproof.
OOC: Please refer to this post before posting. Also, this thread is only for the charries working on their final. The Barn, Stables and Pasture are for any other RPing. =D
After Belle was done gently scrubbing her crab, she looked at the board and saw what step three was.
SPOILER!!: Step 3 for cleaning the crab
Step Three:
Gently massage the Fire Crab shell, under body, legs and tail with a soft, wet washcloth. This will loosen most soil. Don't worry if small flakes are released from the shell! This is just normal shedding. Rinse the Fire Crab to remove flakes
As Belle was done reading it and got all the gunk off poor little Ruby. She took off her gloves and went to get the washcloth. She soaked it up in the bucket and squeezed it out so it would not be too drippy. Belle then started to gently massage her under body with the wet washcloth. Ruby's tail was wagging and she even closed her eyes for a bit. I think she was sleeping....
Belle saw the soil loosing. This means she was doing her job right. Belle even managed to see small flakes releasing from the shell. Ruby was shedding and that was healthy. She was cleaning her up and Belle felt good she was doing work that mattered to this poor creature.
After she was done with the wet washcloth. Belle picked up the water with her hands and gently ran it down to remove the flakes from her body. She was looking so clean. Belle smiled and cooed at Ruby. "Aww look at you getting so clean!"
It was COLD. And she didn't really care that much about the fire crab, they were tough independent creatures (way better than house-elves) and she suspected they needed humans help to keep themselves alive or hygiene-ful. Cross that last word, nothing can be kept hygiene-ful in this place. Louisa strolled into the sanctuary with a handful of nuts in her hand. Her boots sinking in the damp ground with each step, and yes she hoped to Merlin it was just damp dirt and not a Re'em poop. The stalls and the way this place looked like was pretty impressive though, Louisa felt the forest-y feeling and she secretly felt smug that she had Vivi's protective necklace under the layers of clothes.
There were already a couple of students around, she just offered polite nods to those who looked but kept her attention on the stalls... all the fire crabs looked about the same to her. She wanted one that was easily to scare into doing what she tells it to.
HMMM.
"Too lazy.." She passed one tucked under a pile of weeds snoring - did they even snore? Whatever. "Too farty.." The next one had smoke rising from his bottom. "Too ugly..." This one had too many dirty jewels on its back. "Too..." HMMM. She tilted her head and squinted her eyes at the staring fire crab.
POP!
She popped a peanut in her mouth, and started chewing slowly. Creepily.

"I think it's true love, don't you?" Vivi seemingly popped up out of nowhere and grinned at Louisa through the cage. The way she was looking at that fire crab wasn't exactly loving, but it was intense. She slipped around the cage and gave Louisa's arm a pat.
Where was... Bob? Her favorite old fire crab from the lesson... She peered into several cages until she spotted the distinctive sheen of Bob's shell. "Heya, buddy. Want to come out and play with me today? We can have a playdate with Louisa and her new bestie."

GASP. "Thank goodness there was no peanuts in my mouth." She'd be dead. "Want some?" Extending her hand at the blonde and eying the fire crab for a little longer. It was hard to say what it was thinking, Louisa shrugged accepting Vivi's judgement. She apparently was better with creatures, talking to her own fire crab and promising it fun times with-- "Umm.. we just met." it wasn't her new bestie. Just new creature. If she got to keep it, she'd do some experiments on it not humor it.
Anyways. "It needs a name." She picked a nametag from her bag and stuck it on the stall's door, claiming this quiet fire crab her own. Crouching down closer to the creature, she was about to drag it outside but it trudged back away from her and made a displeased sound. HMPH. "Don't be a wuss, come on.." She popped another peanut in her mouth. The creature didn't budge of course, it kept staring at her stubbornly. She was patient for few more seconds before squeezing a part of her body into the stall and froze because the fire crab started turning its bottom toward her. How rude!! Louisa jerked away and shot up to her feet. Annoyed she threw two nuts at it, but instead of feeling threatened by them the creature curiously moved and started investigating. Louisa's thinking wheels started working then, she made a trail of peanuts from the stall to some point outside near Vivi and her Bob.
"Isn't the name 'Bob' too humane?" Like, was she comfortable with calling something a Bob?
Her fire crab was successfully out of the stall and at the end of the peanut trail, completely clueless that it's been tricked.

Bob seemed to be giving Vivi a very sad-eyed morose look, and she stroked his little turtle-y head before going to find a snack for him. Lettuce. That seemed promising. Or nooo... there were bananas in the little food trough. Bob wanted bananas. That's why he had such sad eyes.
Vivi peeled the banana and offered it to Bob to draw him out of his cage. She eyed Bob's tail as he crawled past. Whoops! Short and stubby tail. "Bob is a girl," she scooped him her up and headed for Louisa. "Plus I like the juxtaposition of calling an animal such a very normal person name like Bob. It's meant to be ironic."
She settled on the grass with Bob's bum pointed firmly away from her, and then she finally let poor Bob nosh her banana. "Look how gorgeous she is. The shell... wish I was so shiny."

Louisa was curiously watching Vivi get the gender... right? How did the blonde trust her fire crab to look at his her tail was beyond the red headed. "It's even more ironic now that he's a she." And you get to learn from others' mistakes, no names until Louisa checked on hers' tail. Gulp. She dropped the rest of her peanuts in front of the fire crab to get it completely distracted, and stretched over to take a closer look at HIS tail. "It's a he. Long and wide." She announced sitting back on her bottom.
"Do you think it's harmful if he eats those peanuts?" Oh and! "Maybe I should name him peanut..." The fire crab continued to play (?) with the small pile of peanuts, scattering them around. She didn't dare touching him so she just brought some lettuce to try and feed it. He was pretty interested in the nuts, his interest was strictly about playing not eating though. "Their jewels are fascinating." She wasn't sure if Vivi would look good this shiny though.
She pushed the lettuce in his face, the creature wiggled his head and made some annoyed sounds before moving away from Louisa and closer to Bob. Oh and he dragged some peanuts and was poking the other fire crab.
...
"You don't think he's flirting with her.." The last thing Louisa wanted was for her fire crab to be a player.

"Not flirting, no. He's just being super friendly. Playdate, remember?" Vivi broke off the end of Bob's banana and offered it to the unnamed male fire crab. He wasn't as lethargic as Louisa would have liked, not now that he was in the fresh air and had those peanuts to play with. Bob shyly accepted the offered nut, but she had trouble chewing it and Vivi rescued it from her maw.
"Peanut is a really cute name. Sort of feminine, though." Funny, 'cause Bob was a girl with a boy's name. Vivi took advantage of Bob's distraction and spent time feeling along the top of her shell, looking for any cracks or dings or soft spots. Somehow, remarkably, Bob was a healthy little girl. Maybe after her bath, something would become more obvious.

Ooh, Bob was being.. awkward? Hehe, Louisa smirked at the scene. "Peanut it is." Maybe she'll find a more serious name for him? Nah, she always promised her pets to find them serious names but ended up with a Kitty and a Cuddles, Peanut was probably no change. Louisa observed the two fire crabs slowly interacting, Peanut sufficiently going back to its peanut when Bob touched the gifted nut welcomingly, and that made her smile. But no 'awww'ing at them.
She leaned closer and stared intently at her fire crab's shell, checking if he missed a jewel or suffered from any other obvious irregularities. He did have a couple of jewels scratched and missing a teeeensy piece, they maybe needed polishing and some scrubbing? The touching check up will happen when she had his rear in the water like they did in class, Louisa was not going to risk her HAIR. Up to grab some items from the cupboard, "A bath is in due, he seems like the type to care about smelling good to his peers."
After Belle gently massaged her crab and Ruby was taking a liking into this spa treatment, Belle looked at her notebook for the last remaining steps. First starting off with Step 4.
SPOILER!!: Step 4 of 5
Step Four:
Rinse the Fire Crab thoroughly. Closely inspect the shell for any irregularities, such as softening, excessive flaking, cracks, unusual discharge, or discolorations. Discoloration would occur on the jewels.
Belle needed to rinse Ruby throughly and she put Ruby in the bucket and started to clean her off nice and gently getting every nook and cranny. She was putting warm water on her shell and she was loving it. Her eyes looked so relaxed and her tail was still wagging. After Belle was done washing her, she looked at her shell for any irregularities.
Belle looked underneath and shell and did not find any softness. But Belle did see a crack on the top of her shell. It did not affect her washing i am sure because the infection was being cleansed. Awww Poor Ruby she was suffering with a crack the whole time? Belle then saw same discharge too after she cleaned her. Belle made sure she was going to take care of her. "Do not worry Ruby i will make sure you will get those fixed. You are in the right hands." Belle was sure Ruby heard her because her eyes had the pleading look.

"She doesn't chew hard tiny foods as well as a human person does," Vivi offered apologetically, and she tossed the peanut away for now. Maybe Peanut could eat peanuts, but Bob was a banana and lettuce eater. And maybe worms later, if Vivi got motivated to go digging.
Which, to be honest, was unlikely.
"A bath sounds great. Will you keep an eye on Bob?" Vivi popped to her feet and went off in search of supplies: the buckets, the brushes, and towels. She appeared several minutes later laden with all they'd need to give Bob and Peanut their baths. Soap? She'd forgotten the soap.
"Now then, Bob-a-loo," Vivi leaned down to peer into Bob's little face. "I'm going to stick you in water, and you are going to like it. You'll smell fabulous, and you'll bring all the boy fire crabs to the yard with your shiny pretty shell." That was a thing, surely.

Kat had already rinsed her Fire Crab and Mason seemed to like it. He might need some cooling off, actually, since he's getting so hot. If you know what I mean. After that, Kat looked at Mason and checked for some defects on his shell. As said earlier, Mason had a soft spot. Poor crab. There were no other defects anyway. No discoloration or cracks. Just that soft spot of Mason. Don't worry, Mason, we'll patch you up soon!

Vivi sat back up and filled her bucket.
... Louisa should've checked on Peanut's hard tiny food chewing skills, too. She didn't say anything though, in case the fire crab choked and died and Vivi tattled ending Louisa's future before it started. "Hopefully he won't push Bob then. We can get them worms from Spike next time." If there is anyone who'd have worms, it's the boy with the acromantula living in his hair.
Nodding her head slightly Louisa hugged her knees and babysat the two fire crabs. Peanut didn't seem to eat the nuts, he just rolled them around with his head. But... how many exactly did she give him? She stared at the SMALL amount of peanuts scattered around him. And she was biting her nails instantly, frowned and deep in thought but only for a short time because Vivi was back with all the needed equipment. "Bob lives." She assured her before dragging the bucket closer to her.
Vivi was talking to the fire crab again, and she was almost cooing at her. Louisa and her Peanut stared at each other. Did he expect the same? "Uhh.." It was awkward and illogical to talk to creatures that don't share the same dialect as humans. So the logical and not awkward Ravenclaw filled the bucket with water and grabbed her fire crab, which was defensive and started squeezing his eyes trying to fart, quickly dumping him in the bottle of water.
PHEW. After giving him a displeased look, and him giving her a bitter one, she started stroking his shell and then further down to his skin looking for any cracks or pimples or whatever.

While still wet, place the Fire Crab back in the cage and cover with the cage with a dark colored cloth (the ones that covered it earlier). Rinse out supplies.
Mason was still dripping wet. Good. Kat carried him slowly so that he won't fall. Then the Slytherin placed her fire crab inside its cage. Once Mason was finally inside, Kat covered the cage with dark cloth that was covering the cage earlier as well. After, Kat cleaned the supplies she used, the brush and everything. Then she rinsed them.
Goody goody. After this, Kat will be patching Mason up. Good. Kat watched her watch and decided to wait for around 10 minutes so she can take Mason out of his cage now. 10 minutes start... now.

As Belle saw the Ruby had some cracks on her shell she looked at the Professor's instructions on how to take care of them. She looked at the cracks and discharge section.
SPOILER!!: How to patch up a crack on the shell and discharge
Cracks - Clean the wound thoroughly. If you're not sure, just clean it again! Cracks in Fire Crab shells are the most common of problems. And it can also be the most dangerous. Once the wound is clean, apply a thick layer of antiseptic cream over it, then top it with a piece of tape. The tape will make sure the cream seeps deep down into the wound, and protects it from getting dirty again.
Discharge - Most likely caused by a crack in the Fire Crab's shell, make sure the area is thoroughly cleaned, then follow the steps listed under Cracks.
Belle saw she needed to clean the wound thoroughly. She got Ruby out of the bucket of water and started to clean her crack softly, carefully and fully. She did not feel the pain and that was a good thing. After Belle cleaned the cracks all out, she went to go get the antiseptic cream from the supplies. Once she got it, she squeezed it into her hand and started to put it on the cracks. Ruby's tail started to wag and it must of felt good on her poor shell. Then after Belle patched up all the wounds, she got a piece of tape and made sure the cream was deep in the wounds which they were. She taped all the cracks up to protect them from getting dirty again. Belle made sure the discharge was gone and it was going away and Belle then cleaned with the washcloth the remaining discharge away.

"Why does Spike have worms?" Vivi glanced up briefly at Louisa before resuming the filling of her bucket. As soon as it was full, she lifted her wand and set the bucket on the ground. "You don't think much of creatures, do you? Why do you take the class?"
It wasn't a criticism, but an observation. Some people loved plants or animals or potions, and some saw no point. Vivi didn't take Divination for that very reason. But when people took a class they didn't like, she thought it was a shame. The world was full of interesting things... why fill your brain with boring stuff?
"The truth. You want the NEWT, right?" She tempted Bob with a bit of lettuce, and while the fire crab was distracted, she set the creature into the bucket of water. The shell got a nice massage and scrub, first with fingertips and then with brush, but Vivi kept her eyes on Louisa.
After Belle was done patching up Ruby's wounds. She read the last step the professor had on the board.
SPOILER!!: Last Step
Step Five:
While still wet, place the Fire Crab back in the cage and cover with the cage with a dark colored cloth (the ones that covered it earlier). Rinse out supplies.
Belle looked for dark colored cloth. Once she found it, she put Ruby in her cage and she was still wet but cured to perfection. Thanks to Belle of course. "I hope you are feeling better Ruby." Belle cooed at her fire crab. She was sad to let her go but Ruby was already sleeping in her cage once she put her back in. I guess she was tired out. Then Belle went to her supplies and began to rinse them out. She was cleaning them thoroughly. Belle then turned to the professor and told her she was done cleaning and curing Ruby. "Professor i am done with the final." as she picked up her things and left to go back to the castle.
She kept moving to the next couple of stalls until she saw another indigo and fuchsia jeweled crab. Once she saw her, she peered into the stall. "Well there you are, little darlin'!" She slowly swung the door open and stepped inside. "I knew I'd find you eventually." She smiled and bent over to wave at the crab. She didn't want to just burst into her house rudely, now did she.
Eliza decided to have a seat in the stall to chat with her crab for a moment. "I hope it's all right that I've claimed you again. You don't mind, do you?" She watched her crab turn in a slow circle to face her, pincers in the air. "I didn't think so." She clasped her hands around her knees and sat straight and tall, very official. "Now, there is the matter of your name. Do you have one?" She paused to listen. "Well even if you do, you can't tell me. So when we are together, I will call you..." She thought for a moment Hmmm...nothing too prissy, but she is pretty... She looked the crab in th eyes and said, "How about Glitter? No, that's too much. What about...Celia? Ehh..Cilla. Yes, how do you like the name Cilla?" She paused again out of courtesy. "Cilla it is then. Now I'd imagine you might be a little hungry, ey Cilla?" She stood up and brushed the dirt from her knees. Now what to feed her...

"Alright, Mason, ten minutes is up!" Kat said after checking her watch for the time. Kat lifted the black cloth that covered the cage and peeked on her little fire crab. "Time for some patching up, my dear." She then carefully took Mason out of his cage. Closing the little door, Kat's other hand held Mason tight so that he wouldn't fall. Then Kat placed Mason the table. You sparkly little thing.
Since Mason had a soft spot, Kat placed his cage on the table as well and returned him in. "Sorry if it's annoying you, Mason," Kat apologized. Animals have feelings. Kat moved Mason around to check which part of his cage catches the most amount of sunlight. Soft spots are there because of lack of calcium and calcium can be obtained with a fair amount of sunlight. At least Mason was being cooperative, she didn't have to get a calcium-enriched bone from the cabinet at the far end.

post 2 :: naming & looking for worms
astronomizzle ♧ gryffinDORK | & the rest is drag ♣ #badluckDerf
Now that she had the gender figured out, Kurumi set the fire crab down on the ground to let him walk around a little bit. Exercise was important for all creatures after all. Sitting down on the ground herself, Kurumi simply observed the creature while she rested her elbows on her knees and leaned her head on her hands. A name...now she needed to come up with a name for this fire crab.
Hmmm-ing to herself, she watched as the fire crab chased after a stray butterfly and her eye caught the star shaped ruby on its shell. While Kurumi didn't exactly like giving names that were obvious, her mind couldn't get past the fact that there was a red star on her fire crab. "Akeboshi," she whispered. Yeah, it literally meant red star, but her mind just could NOT think of anything else and the name just felt...right.
Pushing herself up off the ground, Kurumi walked over to where the fire crab was busy snapping at the butterfly and she instead found a patch of dirt and was loose enough for her to dig her fingers in to look for worms. Or maybe she should have just asked Vivi for some worms since she had been collecting them during the lesson...
Or maybe Peeves would just randomly show up and shower the area with them again - not that she really wanted that to happen. She was rather content with poking and digging around in the dirt for worms. They had to be here somewhere...

Kat looked at her crab and smiled. "You'll be okay there, Mason," she assured her fire crab. Naaaaw, Kat will really miss him though after this final. Kat hopes she could just adopt him and care for him at home, if her family members didn't mind! 'Course they would'nt, they let Kat be. Kat was both happy and sad that she had a bit of independence for now. But she wished she could still keep the title of 'Daddy's Girl' though...
... Oh, is that Kurumi? Kat was finished so, maybe helping out wouldn't hurt right? "Hi Kurumi!" Kat said with a smile. Then her eyes fell to her fire crab. Meh, looks kinda the same as Mason but... girl or boy? Checking the tail, Kat was sure that was a boy fire crab. Like Mason! "What have you named your fire crab?" Curiosity.
Digging the earth again? Mehn, Kat hated that but she felt so helpful right now. It didn't really matter anymore. She just wanted to help. Who knocked some sense into Kat's brain, Merlin? Invisible force! "D'you need help?" Kat offered.
Helpful Slytherin. Psssssh.

Louisa HAD to drop Peanut at Vivi's question and she oh so dramatically gasped at the other 'claw, "I think he'd be offended if he heard you." She was being all dramatic all of the sudden. "Spike spends more than half of his free time in the greenhouses nourishing and taking care of all the plants there - including the man eating ones." She grabbed the bristle brush and looked around for some soap. "He also has an acromantula nesting in his hair with his complete consent. Where's the soap?" No use asking, Louisa got to her feet and went to get some from the cupboard.
"Yep. I need the NEWT and I got an Outstanding in my OWLs." So it seemed like a shame to drop the subject just because she wasn't a creature hugger. Back with some soapy water in a bucket, she dipped the brush and started the gentle scrubbing. "And it's not that I don't think much of creatures," which she didn't but she felt bad saying it out loud. "It's that I'm not interested in... taking care of them. No.. uhh.." she paused the scrubbing and stared at her fire crab, still trying to fart apparently but failing and growing grumpy cos of it. "I don't connect with them." She looked up at Vivi then and shrugged.
Scrub scrub scrub.. "It's different from how I feel about plants. I like the green living things but I'm not a Spike or a Bentley." Who were both over the top if you ask her.

"He can't be offended. We barely speak to each other. I'm not sure he's aware that keeping bugs in his pockets and spiders in his hair will probably never get him a girlfriend, but he sounds like a good little Ravenclaw in that he cares more about his interests than anything else." Which was the definition of a good 'Claw... no matter that most of them failed to live up to it.
She focused on Bob's shell, gently massaging lose the flaking dirt from the creases and around the gems and then setting the fire crab on the ground so she could refill the bucket with clean water. Bob went back into the bucket with a little splash. "Like I said... not judging you. I just think there are lots of interesting things in this world, so I don't bother with the things I don't care about. I'm lucky that the classes I need for YATI don't fall into that category."
She did grin at that, and the grin widened when little fire crab legs flailed as Bob tried to climb out of the bucket. "What do you like? Or what do you love? Class-wise."

Good. Now that Kevin was all nice and soaked she could get to the rest of the bath over with. Reaching over, she picked up the soft brush and began making light circular motions. She was afraid that anything too hard would have made Kevin try roasting her again and even though the thing was in water she was sure that water was a good conductor of heat and she didn't want the little thing turning herself into soup. Fire Crab soup? It did NOT have a nice ring to it, especially not when the Professor would have freaked about her letting Kevin cook herself. These things were endangered afterall.
Next came the massaging. Half way through rubbing Kevin, Lex could feel Felix rubbing against her foot again. She looked down at him curiously.
"Felix, I'm busy loving Kevin, I can't love you right now." She said plainly. Was it really that hard to understand? She was busy being nice to one, the other would simply have to wait!
Right, back to the rubbing and the massaging that she was sure the Fire Crab was enjoying. Rub. Massage. Rub. Massage. Get scratched.
"Felix!" She shouted down at the kneazle. "No! Bad Felix, wait your turn. If you want a bath that badly then you can have one when Kevin's done." Suddenly the animal bolted from the building. "Aw man...Come back! I was only kidding, you don't have to get a bath!" She dropped Kevin back in the bucket then got as far as the door before remembering she was supposed to be actively giving her a bath.
"Right...." Lex walked back over to the bucket slowly. "Sorry about that..." She picked her up gingerly while checking to make sure the drop hadn't hurt her. "I guess we should get you rinsed now."So I can go look for my baby before he gets lost.
Her affection was always one to sway on a dime.

Jory continued cleaning Crabby. Now, he began to massage shell and below the body with the washcloth. He took special care and time with these as these seemed the most dirty. Plus there was shedding. Flakes were just falling of of the shell, even more than the amount that the Crab he had worked on in class. It kind of reminded him of dandruff. He continued with the massage until he could see no more flakes.
Then the Puff moved on to the legs and tail. He was still a bit apprehensive about Crabby shooting flames at him.
Sarah walked into the sanctuary, hoping to find her Canon. She walked up and down the stalls about 3 times hoping in vain to find Canon, yet to no avail. It was hard as it is as firecrabs looked similar, especially when you see so much at once.
After about 15 minutes of searching Sarah just had to give up, she needed to take care of this before the sun set.
She walked up the stalls one final time and looked for the best firecrab EVER...
Eventually she found one that was just perfect for her, and it reminded her strangely of Canon. It was young, by the look of it and it had nice coloured gems as well! It was also joyfull and seemed to be telling Sarah to pick it
