"Yeah," Max replied softly. He gave Em a small smile. "I just... don't... want you to be upset that I choose Ravenclaw and... and I don't want my reasonings to sound stupid, or..." He rubbed a hand on the back of his head, trying to keep his emotions out of the words he was saying. "I just feel bad, 'cause... we could've..." He looked down at his lap with furrowed eyebrows, clearly distressed. "I wish we'd been friends before. I wish... it hadn't taken us this long to find each other, and maybe if I had just let the Hat do what it wanted..." he trailed off with no intention of finishing his statement.
It 'WILL' make for some amazing walks, she said? So... that was it? They were going to university in New Zealand? Whether she had intended to say it like that or not, Max smiled and held Em close to him. "Sounds wonderful."
The topic of professional Quidditch was beginning to make him uncomfortable. Why was Em pushing the idea so much? Did she WANT him to be a professional Quidditch player? He glanced at her for a moment before looking back at his knees and replied, "Erm, I don't know what Ellie would think about it... I'm torn between thinking she'd be happy for me and look forward to playing with or against me... or bring up those times I came to Quidditch practice half asleep..." So no, he hadn't talked to her about that. "I've never mentioned it to Professor V - I think he'd laugh, for some reason." Even though Max idolized his Head of House, he always felt like he was letting him down. "Mum and I have talked about it in passing. She supports it, but she always stresses on the less glamorous aspects of it - but she loves the sport so much that all that kind of stuff is outweighed by the fun she has." Did he REALLY love playing Quidditch as much as she did? Or Ellie did? He wasn't sure.
Would he really spend his future regretting it? He didn't think so. Deep down in a place Max rarely ventured, he felt that his children needed to have their father around.
He wasn't going to be absent for the majority of the year, every year, like his mother had been.
"I'll keep it in mind."
Emmaleigh looked at Max sadly, when he said something was wrong. She listened quietly as he spoke, unable to interrupt. “Maximus,” she said quietly, placing her hand on his cheek, and gently turning his face to her. “I could never be upset with you for choosing Ravenclaw. Its part of what makes you, you. And wanting to be with friends is never stupid.” A small smile appeared on her face as she though about how it was a very Hufflepuff thing to do. “What if you weren't placed in Ravenclaw. You probably wouldn't be really good friends with Ellie. And we did find each other, and at the right time too.” She paused a moment, studying him, before asking something she just couldn't help but ask. “Cause we could've, what?” What did he think would be so different?
As Max told her about what he thought the others would think of his idea of playing professional Quidditch, Em took his hand in both of hers. Gently rubbing the back of his hand, she leaned against him, not knowing exactly what to say. “I think.” she started and looked down at their hands. She frowned as she tried to find the words. “I want you to be happy, to do what you want, but I.” she paused and looked up at him. “I think I would be really worried, like sick to my stomach worried, about you, all of the time.” That wasn't telling him not to do it, it was just letting him know how she would feel.
