As you make your way into the History of magic classroom you notice that thankfully it appears quite normal. The desks are set in the usual order of twos, with nothing at all on top.
The windows are closed thanks to the light rain that continues to fall outside. Up front Professor Scabior is leaning against his desk, and gazing out the window, appearing to be slightly distracted as he does not even notice you enter. Nevertheless, pick your desk and grab a seat, class will begin shortly. Class Progression:

Alex had been beyond relieved when he entered the classroom to see that it was normal, and not a cold, tiny dungeon like the last time he'd entered class. Wooooooot! Hopefully this meant that they were going to simply sit around and take notes--his favorite kind of class. The uneventful kind. But passwords? Why on earth would they be talking about that? Hmmm, maybe they were going to discuss the common rooms, or the portraits! Yeah, that'd be interesting!
He raised his hand. "Passwords are any words or phrases used to gain access somewhere. If you don't have the password, you don't get in, like with the common rooms. Other portraits use them as well for secret passages and such," he added.

Man, two professors who did not look very well, Lefay now Scabior, atleast he did not look nearly as sickly but there was definately something on his mind. She heard the first question and raised her hand and answered, "Passwords are codes that are put in place to lock people out who have no buisness accessing whatever the person or persons want to keep from others.". She finished answering the question and contemplated for a moment whether she should ask if her professor was okay but there were some others asking so she decided to just let it be.

Passwords, hmm? What did this have to do with HISTORY? Vivi's brow wrinkled as she considered the professor and the ramifications of his question. Funny that they were all trapped outside their common rooms, which required a password, and he was teaching them a lesson on passwords. Wasn't it?!?
"Passwords have their limit, though. Anyone who overhears or is told a password can gain access to the protected location or information, so they aren't really very secure. Something that requires your identity or specific permission would be a better way to protect access, because that can't be faked or gained through malfeasance."

Was it just him or was the Professor rather distracted today? He seemed to be spacing out even though students had greeted him before class. But there wasn't alot time to think about it so the Slytherin listened to the question once class started.
Passwords? "A password is used to keep anything from entering a place unwanted people aren't allowed in. Like the common rooms...or atleast i think all of the houses have passwords..." He said after he raised his arms. "Muggles use passwords with number or words codes they touch" he added because he felt like being smart today...

Then her question was answered. He asked them about passwords. Belle smiled and remembered the time when her brothers were asking for her password and they were mad because she would not say it. Belle raised her hand and said, "Professor, a password would be a secret word or code you can only remember. It can relate to you somehow or even our own houses. If you can not remember the password, well then...you are in deep trouble."

Minerva's interest jumped as she noticed how distracted Scabiors was today. Well she didn't blame him. She wondered if all the professors would be that distracted. As he started class Minerva listened, passwords was an interesting topic. How did that go with history, but the more Minerva thought she realized it went very well. Chamber of secrets had a password, didn't it.
Putting up her hand, "Professor, a password is something that is put in place to protect things from others view. It could be a room, bank accounts, and for muggles it could be their computers, emails, things of that nature."

Grrr you Scabior!!!! You're making HoM to easy this year!!!! You might make me start to hate it!!! Nate thought. But it was true every single year History of Magic got easier and easier. Either that or Nate was just getting smarter. We'll never know. Nate had to think of a simple way to say this so then he wouldn't go on and on about passwords, and start to kill people from being board. Or they might be tearing out all their hair while thinking get to the point already!!! After some thought Nate finally knew how he would explain it in the quickest way possible. So he raised his hand and said.
"Professor a password is something people, both muggles and wizards, use to protect valubles from other people. One example is our common rooms to protect other houses from getting inside, or some muggle cellphones you set passwords on from keeping other people looking at your private information." there that was how Nate said it. He could've made it a lot longer, but once again he didn't want anyone dieing from being board.
Nate's been noticing something weird going on with HoM. Scabior has been planning all the major events that has been happening for his class. First there was the train wreck, in class he had them fix model trains to work again. Later on in the year ghosts got active, and all the riddles in the rooms had to deal about ghosts. Now there was the common room lockout, and he has them talking about passwords. Very suspicous Scabior, very suspicous indeed.

History of Magic was most definitely not one of Sophie's favourite classes. Thought that term the lessons had been quite interesting, so she was kind of looking forward for today's lesson as well.
Professor Scabior asked about passwords and it made Sophie immediately think about the Common Rooms. Meh.
Many of her classmates where already giving all sorts of answers, so she tried her best not to repeat most of the things they were saying when she raised her hand. "Professor, we can use some words as... a code or something to identification!" Hm... maybe she should explain it better... Or try to, at least. "Like, when they are a lot of suspicious people around... or something... you could ask us to say a certain word to prove that... we were really us!"
... You know? Did that make any sense? It did make sense in Sophie's head, though she pondered if that sort of coding would be called a password too.

Passwords? In Histroy of Magic? How were passwords considered history? Or maybe they were going to learn about a certain event that involved passwords? They'd have to wait a while and see.
As for what she knew about passwords, Renesmee raised her hand politely and waited her turn. "Professor, passwords are words, combinations, numbers or even riddles that are used to keep rooms or objects away from people whom do not have knowledge of the password." Just like the Slytherins could not get into the Hufflepuff common room and visa versa.

Hearing the Professor's question, Dylan scrunched up his face. Passwords? Well, it was quite obvious, of course. "To break down the word 'password' explains the overall meaning...It's a word or series of words that allows one to pass through something...or gain admittance."
He was kinda just sitting there, looking uninterested...So, the Slytherin added a grin for good measure. Scabior was one of his favorites.

So clearly EVERYONE in the class had an understanding of what a password was. Which was excellent considering that it made Scabior's job easier. He nodded at each answer, the majority of them differed but in the end they were all saying the same thing. "So we can all agree that, passwords are words, phrases, symbols, and numbers, that are used to limit access to a handful of people." Therefore excluding everyone else. He raised a brow. Yes? Yes. They could all agree in that.
"Within the school, passwords are used for the common rooms like Mister Vanderbilt and others stated. Where else in the castle are passwords used?"

When it was hidden from the school, the only way for a person to get down there was to know the password." Placing her hand back down she sat to listen to the other answers in the room.

What places required passwords other than the common rooms? Hmm. Max listened thoughtfully as others mentioned the Headmistress's office and the Prefects' bathroom. Raising a hand, he added, "What about... secret passageways throughout the school?"
It wasn't a secret that such places existed, and surely they required passwords, too. Some probably had other things involved other than a key word to speak aloud, but it was worth mentioning, wasn't it?

Lex raised a curious eyebrow at the mention of other places within the school that passwords were used for. Yeah she knew about the usual places and for the most part those held very little interest to her BUT perhaps there were places she didn't know about that would be worth looking into.
She listened to the various responses, hoping someone would name a place she didn't know about but unfortunately they all only seemed to know the usual places. Time to find out for herself.
"Professor?" Her hand raised. "Where else in the castle do you know requires a password?" Because he'd know more than them for sure.

Passwords ey? Eliza thought they had a good list started for places at Hogwarts with passwords, but she didn't really know any others. Yes, the common rooms...the Headmistress's office..the Charms room has a key, but I don't think a password... She was sure other places had them too, but she'd never really gone looking, which now that she realized - she thought was a shame. What have I been doing all year? I haven't explored once!
She raised her hand and said, "I'm sure there is a password for say...the storage room for extra potions ingredients?" Although, maybe that's just a key too... | |

Sophie thought for a while... and thought... and thought...
She didn't know anywhere else that needed a password in a Castle besides those places that had been already mentioned. Guessing was not an option in her head, nor repeating someone's answer, so she decided to be quiet for now.
Though just a fraction of a second after her decision, a thought popped into her mind. "Professor, the Room of Requirement needs us to walk in front of its 'wall/door' before we can see it and enter." And think about something... "Does that make it a password as well?"
