Where The Green between the Castle and the Stadium
Who Can Attend First year students who need to learn the basics before Quidditch Tryouts, and older students who wish to brush up on their flying skills.
What to Bring School brooms will be provided for all students. Make sure to wear sensible clothing.
Professor Vindictus arrived an hour before the lesson was scheduled to begin and arranged the broomsticks in two neat rows on the green grass located between the Castle and the Quidditch Stadium. Once he finished the task, he stood by and waited for the students to arrive.

Now it was time for this part. Since she had more experience with these brooms and flying than she had a year ago, it would surely be easier. Penelope stuck out her hand over the broom and spoke the word, "Up." The broom twitched and rolled a tiny bit but didn't leave the ground. Hmm. She'd try again. "Up!" she commanded firmly. Instantly the broom shot up and hit her palm with a dull thwack, and she gripped it quickly. Her palm stung a tiny bit from the impact with the broom handle, but the sting was fading fairly quickly, so it was all good.

Minerva stood at her broom and looked at it. She had been on the quidditch team a few terms and knew flying well so why was she so nervous looking at this broom. She had spent the summer in the muggle world with her grandparents and hadn't been near a broom let alone flying on one all summer. What if she didn't remember how to fly? What if she didn't have it in her to get the broom to even come to her hand. She worried looking down for awhile and then took a deep breath.
Holding out her hand Minerva took another breath then looked at the other students. All of them seemed to being doing well. So it was her turn she had to do this. Her heart pounding more then it should she put her hand out, "UP" she said firmly to the broom and the broom moved with ease to her hand like she hadn't missed the entire summer and it was a natural thing. Letting out a long breath she smiled happy that she wasn't going to look like a goof in front of the first years. At least not yet..

"Place your left hand over the broom and in a firm, steady voice, say 'Up!'." Vindictus knew that some students would have some difficulty with the most basic task. "Remember that you're in charge and not the broom - make sure you let it know that you're the boss! Once the broom handle hits your open palm, grasp it tightly."
Right! The second thing to do. This was also another easy part for Lex. As she got ready to command the broom she couldn't help but remember the first broom she had tried it with. It hadn't shot up when she told it to and she lit it on fire shortly afterwards...yeah she got in trouble but if you asked her...the broom had it worse.
She gazed around at everyone else that had already started the exercise. Not everyone was getting it and it figured the older ones all got it on the first go. Why were they even here? To make the younger ones look bad no doubt.
With a heavy sigh she raised her hand and in a rather firm, if not slightly threatening voice she gave the command, "UP!"
Almost as if the broom could see it's own doom coming it shot into her hand and her fingers curled nicely around it. "Good broom." She muttered with a satisfied smile. So this broom was a smart one; she liked that.

Gideon waited as Vindictus made his rounds among the two lines, passing him and stopping in front of Genevieve commenting on her choice. Vivi? He probably knew her through her mother as he was starting to learn a few did. The prefect didn't have much time to dwell when the professor turned his attention back to the class and gave them the first instruction. He raised his left hand from his side and up over the ground where his borrowed possession lay.
"UP!" He said with a firm voice, commanding the broom to raise from the ground. Thankfully the broom at his feet wasn't one of the more tempermental types that some of the school brooms could be and it soon came up from its previous resting place to his open hand like it was expected to. His fingers wrapping tightly around the polished wood once it had touched upon his skin.
Well, this first part should be easy. Jen put her hand over the broom on the ground and shouted "Up! in a firm controlling voice
The broom shot straight up and Jen graspered her broom tightly in her hand.

Satisfied still by the potential he was inexplicably showing, Pao gazed around to observe the others. The older students were, unsurprisingly, able to do this on the first try. Well, most of them, at least. So he started scoping out the other first years while he waited for more instructions.

"Alexa!" He spotted a familiar face. She had managed to get her broom into her hand already. "Congrats!" Although, he really wasn't all that surprised. She seemed like the type that would have no problem in the air. It suddenly occurred to him that perhaps he wasn't allowed to talk. He stared at Vindictus sheepishly, hoping he wasn't about to be reprimanded for enjoying his classmate's success. The last thing I want to do is lose points in my first ever lesson! The thought made his cheeks turn red.

This terms flying lesson started just like any other. Left side of the broom.... check. Hand over broom.... check. Firmly tell the broom up..... check. Lily had not had a problem getting the broom to listen to her except for the first time she tried. So it was no surprise today when she gave her firm "Up!" that the broom flew up and right into her hand. Nor was it a surprise that it was a docile broom and didn't cause her to nearly lose her balance. She had a nice firm grip on it, but it wasn't going to really be going anyplace soon, without her on it. So she could check off her next bit.
Broom in hand... Check. Now to wait until it's time to mount and kick off.

Annabelle heard the professor command the class to go on and try to get their brooms to their hands. Belle stepped on the left side of the broom, put her arm out with her open palm and commanded the broom, "UP!" she said. It didn't work..."Hmm maybe if i said it with more force and command." Belle thought. She put her thought into action and she said "UP!" forecefully. The broom flew to her hand and her smile was glowing with pride.

With the sensible broom in her hand she gazed around at the others again. One student in particular that had caught her attention was the hufflepuff she had met and had been running into over and over...and over again. She was about to call to him when he said her name. He was even congratulating her!
"Thanks!" She said with a wide grin. Even though she was used to lifting brooms off the floor by now she never got tired of a compliment. "And I saw you lift your broom too!" Yup, it hadn't gone unnoticed but she wasn't sure whether or not they were allowed to talk. Although...he just spoke...so it must have been fine...right?
"Is this your first time flying?" She asked, lowering her voice a bit...just in case. The school year had barely gotten under way yet she had gotten into enough trouble to last her...a bit a lifetime so she wasn't looking for anymore just yet.

Emmaleigh watched as more and more people were getting their brooms to come up. This was not happening. "Up." she commanded again, and watching it wiggle a little more forcefully. This stupid broom. Maybe Atticus had been right. If she couldn't master something as 'simple' as this in six years, how was she ever going to be able to stay on the broom. "Up.: she said again, frustration evident in her voice. "Up, Up , Up." she said watching the broom rock back and forth.

Mika watched as people's brooms came up into their hands and hers just lay limp on the ground like a - a piece of grass or a mundane thingy. She wasn't happy with it but she was going to try try try again.
"UP" she spoke her words squeaking slightly.
Nothing - well, almost nothing. It did rattle and roll a bit but it didn't rock back and forth it was like a dog rolling on its side. Nothing spectacular here at all. Just a broom being obstinant.

Violet jumped a little bit at the sound of Vindictus' voice again. But she looked at him listening very carefully with his instructions. And the next thing she knew everyone was suddenly saying UP and some brooms had immediately come right into the students' hands, while others, didn't right away. It was when she looked at Elektra did she see Elektra's broom come flying up and whack her in the face, making Violet gasp covering her mouth. At the same time she tried not to laugh, but a light giggle had escaped her lips. But then Elektra had successfully gotten her broom up like everyone else which brought a smile to Violet's hand.
She then looked down at her broom and extended her arm, placing her hand over the broom. Violet then said,"Up!" and the broom wiggled a little bit on the ground and then stopped moving. Violet then said softly,"Hmph.." She then said a little more firmly,"UP!" and the broom lifted a little bit off the ground that time, but then dropped back down. Violet huffed a little bit and then said more firmly than before,"UP!!" and the broom came flying up into Violet's hand swiftly. She managed to grip it tightly without letting it fly away. She then smiled feeling proud of herself, then she looked over at Vindictus patiently waiting for his next instructions.
Mika frowned, put her left hand above the broom YET again and cleared her mind. All she did was visualize the broom floating into her hand, floating as lightly as a little feather could. There she hoped that could help her concentration.
"UP" she spoke again, her words firm, strong, and confident.
The broom squiggled and hopped up a foot before dropping down again. It hadn't reached her hand yet but it had gotten close. It had risen at least.

Tiffany stared at her broom and waited as the professor spoke again. So now was he telling them to start and learn from the basics first instead of learning more skills on how to control the broom well or more Quidditch. But it was always good to start from the beginning and strengthen it before you do anything further right? She smiled as she put her left hand over the broom and cleared her mind as she thought of the her experience of doing so when she was still a first year.
"Up!"she said as the broom moved a bit. No, this was not happening right? She had to make it, she has to...or else it would be a shame. "Up!"she exclaimed once again in a clearer voice. And this time she succeeded and she was so glad about that. Great.

Vindictus watched and nodded as the students performed the most basic of all flying procedures. Once they all had their broomsticks in their hands, he continued.
"Straddle the broom and keep both feet planted firmly on the ground," he began. "Once you straddle the broom, check your hand placement. Left-handed fliers will naturally have their left hand placed on the broom handle, directly above the right, and right-handed fliers will have theirs placed above the left."
He purposely stopped talking and gave the class a long, hard stare. "Never take your hands off the broom handle. One hand must always be on it for control or else you'll lose control and go SPLAT. Now, where was I? Oh, yes. Broom control!"
"Leaning forward over the broom handle will cause you to speed up. Sitting up on the broom while pulling the handle towards you will slow you down. Pushing the broom handle to the right or to the left will move you in those directions. To land, gently nudge the broom handle towards the ground but never, ever point it straight down because it is extremely difficult to pull out of a vertical dive. In fact, it is rare to see a Seeker go into a perfectly vertical dive because of the danger. Landing at a forty-five degree angle is the safest and most effective way to land."
Vindictus paused and hoped that his warning would sink in. Rocketing towards the ground at a ninety-degree angle always ended badly. "To begin flying, gently push off from the ground with your feet."
"You may begin!"

Straddle the broom....right....Kurumi could do that....yep...it meant her feet would still be on the ground after all. Despite her broom not entirely being at her hand yet, Kurumi bent down rather quickly and snatched it out of the air and then stood up straight. No one had seen that, right? Kurumi then slowly picked up one of her legs and threw it over the broom so that she was straddling it.
And then her arms began to itch like MAD. Kurumi was back to scratching her arms furiously and chewing on her bottom lip. Right...up...off the ground... Reluctantly, Kurumi placed both hands back on the broom's handle and bent her knees and kicked up off the ground....
....only to land back on her feet within a few seconds. "Just....stretching my legs," she grumbled to anyone that was listening or wondering.

After placing both of her hands on the broomstick, right hand first, the Ravenclaw drew her attention back to Professor Vindictus. Even though she knew what she was supposed to do, the fifth year continued to wait patiently for the signal to take off, still listening to what they were being told to do. As soon as she heard the Professor announced that they could begin, the fifth year pushed off from the ground, soon not touching the grass with her feet anymore.
And now? All she had to do was to fly around. That’s right. No flying squirrels. No burning barrels. No nothing. This class, since it was about the basics, wasn’t bad at all. Gwendolyn was ready to start flying around, when something errr… someone caught her eye. She looked at Kurumi for a moment, but drew her attention away as she heard the Gryffindor Prefect mumble something. The last thing Gwen wanted to do was meddle in other people’s business, so she decided to just go.
With both her hands placed firmly on the broom, the Ravenclaw began to fly upwards, until she was high enough, but still not far away from the ground. Yes. That seemed to be the normal altitude. After that, Gwendolyn pushed the broom handle a bit to the right and started flying around.

Straddle the broom. Check! Juliet straddled onto the broom. Easy enough. Both her feet is firm on the ground, her hands positioned as it is. Juliet was not a big fan of heights but she can probably manage this. She has been flying on a broom since she started to own one back then. It's more of a love and hate thing.
After straddling, it's now time to fly, right? Juliet gulped, wishing that she won't be embarrassing herself by falling or something like that. Okay, putting a firm grasp on the broom and looking up, Juliet's foot pushed off the ground.

Hannah was anxious to finally be flying again. She loved the way it made her feel...so carefree!!! Which is something that she needed after the summer that she had. She didn't really feel like she needed a refresher because she was extremely comfortable on a broom, still she thought it never hurt to listen anyways.
Hannah was right handed so her right hand would go on top of her left...yup! Lean forward to speed up, pull the broom toward you to slow down, never take your hands off the broom. Check, check, check! She was itching to get started, to feel the breeze blow her long blonde hair back. She glanced over to her friend to see how she was holding up, and see if she needed any help before taking off!
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
The only reason why Daichi had come to the basic lesson was not because he didn't know how to fly. If he didn't he wouldn't have been a chaser right? But it was more that he WANTED to fly.
As the Professor gave them further instructions, Daichi was eagerly listening to them. Of course they were going to fly now, something he had been waiting for ever since he got to school.
He straddled the broom he was using and kicked himself off of the ground and pulled on the handle a little so that the broom flew up higher. He saw Gwen who also seemed to have no problem but then he saw that she was looking at Kurumi before speeding off. Daichi looked down on the ground and saw the Prefect still standing on the ground.
Argh! He wanted to fllllyyy~ but he didn't like it when someone couldn't get themselves off of the ground. And it was Kurumi , his big sister...he couldn't just leave right? With a small sigh, Daichi pushed the handle down and he sped to the ground. Making a small right turn before he pulled the handle up and breaked in front of her. "Come on!" he shouted cheerfully " You can do it!"
And he flew up again to show how easy it was and made an exaggerated big loop.

Kurumi probably should have applied another several dozen coats of lotion before coming out to the pitch, because it was clear that the three coats she had applied before coming down to the pitch was not enough. Ug...Selina was gonna owe her BIG time. She didn't know how...but she was going to owe her. Kurumi bent her knees again and attempted to take off, only to touch back down again.
Erm....awkward... No one would ever believe that her, Kurumi Hollingberry, had once been Seeker for the Gryffindor Quidditch team. She was even having a hard time believing it herself.
Sigh.

Looking up, Kurumi was a bit surprised to see Daichi hovering over her. Not that she was surprised to see him up in the air - she knew he was a brilliant player - but more that he was the one offering her moral support. He really had grown even if he still carried around Mr. Duckles. "T-T-Thanks Daichi," she blushed, bending her knees again and gripping the handle of her broom a little more firmly. Okay, third times the charm, right?
Kicking off a little more firmly this time, Kurumi shut her eyes tight and expected to feel her feet back on the ground...only the ground never came. She wasn't high off the ground at all, only a few inches really, but she WAS in the air. "OhthankMerlin."

As much as she would have liked to help Kurumi, the Ravenclaw eventually decided that there was nothing she could do. Since she would have hated it if people would have been staring at her if she would be in Kurumi’s situation. Just as she was beginning to fly around, the Ravenclaw noticed Daichi reacting way better than her. Cheering someone up probably was the best thing to do, but Gwen wasn’t one of those sympathetic people. Not really.
After flying around for a while, the fifth year leaned a bit forward, commanding her broom to go a bit faster. She couldn’t believe how much she disliked the flying class in her first year, when she hadn’t even been able to make the broom raise from the ground. And that wasn’t the worst part. Of course not. She had to do something stupid in her very first flying lesson. Gwen started remembering how she started flying around quite confidently, and then, with a too quick turn to the right, she managed to lose her balance up in the air.
Just as she was thinking about this, the girl pulled the broom handle to the right, a bit too fast. Ughh. Gwen was able to regain her balance in time, though. Slowing her broom down a bit, the Ravenclaw decided not to fly around much faster for a while.

Oh they were doing stuff? West went ahead and got on his broom. Straddled it, as it were. Still keeping a grip on it of course. He'd never really stopped to examine his hands before on the broom, but it was strange when he realised that both ways felt totally comfortable for him. Huh. Weird. He decided to try changing while he was flying. Maybe it was on account of he was used to using one hand and the other grabbing hold of a Quaffle?
Also he was tempted by this vertical dive business.
Because after all, West Odessa was NOT a Seeker.
Oh... they were starting? Wooop! West launched himself upppp without another thought.

Annabelle was glad the professor was letting them start to take off on their brooms. After Belle had the broom grasped in her hand, she stepped over on it. She was politely following the professor's instructions. She didn't really want to make any mistakes. She had her right hand first on the broom, then the left hand under the right. She felt right at home just being on the broom. Belle was itching to be in the air and just fly already.
When her hands were all correctly placed. She kicked off just a little bit and she started to hover. "Wooahh...woaahh.." she said and the broom was rocking. She knew she had to have a firm stance on the broom. Belle had a firebolt back in her room that she wanted to ride. She could feel how the firebolt was an amazing piece of work compared to the school's brooms. When Belle was hovering she was ready to go in the air.

Terry listened to the Professor, taking a close note of what he had to do. He didn't want to fall off, he didn't want to cause himself or anyone else any damage and so he would do exactly what the Professor told him to, to make sure that it didn't happen. Once he had finished speaking, the Slytherin took in a deep breath and prepared himself for what was to come.
Okay. He could do this. It was just a broom, people younger than him had sat on a broom before and flown really well. He was twelve and he could show everyone that he was able to do this!
He transferred the broom to both hands and lifted his leg over the top so that he was straddling the broom. Well this looked odd. He then placed his right hand, seeing as he was right handed, in front of his left and gripped hold of it very tightly. He wasn't going to let go, there was no way that was going to happen.
He cleared some space between him and the next person, closed his eyes, took a deep breath and then kicked up gently from the ground.
