Once you enter the Divination tower classroom from the ladder in the ceiling of the corridor below you will see it set up the same as usual apart from the drapes being pulled back and the windows open to let the spring air in.
The normal clutter along the front wall where the professor's desk was didn't allow for any real notion of what the leson will be about so don't spend too much time worrying about it, not good to cloud your Inner Eye! Professor Elwood is sitting at her desk absent-mindedly tracing shapes on her desktop.
"Please come in guys, and have a seat."
OCC: The lesson won't start officially until much later but won't really move on past the first question until tomorrow morning. Please read the classroom rules before posting.

YAAAAY!
Bliss was VERY pleased that the Professor has liked her interpretation. Seems like she had been right after all. GO HER! Now though, they had been asked for specifics and honestly, she only knew a few. A few things are better than none, right? She raised her hand. "I believe that not only eye colour and shape of eyes are important, but also the way they tilt, how far apart they are and how dull or bright they are," Bliss explained. Hoping once again that she was right. She was, after all, only repeating what she had been told in the past.

...a few friends?
"Your friends don't have tendrils, do they?" Sierra asked. Just sayin'. Tendrils, classrooms, and professors clearly didn't get along. Rest in peace, Burbage. Sierra was actually going to miss that woman. She was...perky and fun, but...they'd made bottle rockets!
Nothing to worry about, though. Right. This was Hogwarts. What part of it history suggested there was never anything to worry about?!
...anyway. Sierra raised her hand. "They say large eyes indicate loyalty, affection, and intelligence." She paused. "...but professor, I have large eyes." She was intelligent. Loyal and affectionate, though?
Specifics? She wanted specifics about what made this form of scrying work? Well, that was a trick question. Technically, scrying dealt with EVERY part of the object, or in this case they eye, being used. It was not an exclusive art. Everything worked together to bring about the final product- the vision. Or, you know, in most people's cases, the images that they saw in the eye. Selina just hoped that she did not go all weird freak with this assignment.
Speaking of feeling like a outsider, Selina visibly flinched when eye color was brought into the conversation. She turned to look at her friend worriedly and was surprised to see that Kurumi was already looking at her rather worriedly as well. It seemed that they were thinking the same thing. How would this factor for Kurumi? Ugh, this class was a great one, but it always did put the two Gryffindor girls on the spot.
So she smiled at her friend to try and put her at ease before raising her hand. "Professor, everything about the eye factors into the scrying. It isn't mutually exclusive to just ONE part of the eye. It takes all of it to make the image."
Ethan seemed to be having trouble focusing in class today. He was drifting off in his thoughts.. pleased with the prospect of gazing into a certain someone's eyes for the purpose of today's lesson.. when that strange voice caught his attention. He peered in that general direction, somewhat apprehensively, as the voice was not only rude and abrupt, but also because it hinted at recent occurrences.. And he certainly didn't need to be reminded, let alone anything else horrible happen in this class.
But apparently Professor Elwood was alright with the voices.. friends, she called them. He raised an eyebrow in that general direction, then tried his best to revert his attention back to the teacher and the discussion. Right.. Oculomancy.. and characteristics?
He listened to the answers being offered - some general and some more specific, then raised his hand to offer his own. "And also in terms of color.. one can read the variations in the iris, specifically flecks and striations.. they can determine more specific traits within the general terms."

See? Reading ahead did help with these kinds of lessons. Ella truthfully found Divination to be a bit confusing but she'd made it a habit to read her text several times so she wouldn't be utterly confused the entire time. It was helping too, which was quite nice.
Oh and the whole 'just some friends' stuff? Ella wanted to know which friends because there was some sketchy stuff going on in the school at the moment and she couldn't help but be a little wary. Constant vigilance and all that, yeah?
Specifics? Ella didn't know too much about specifics on the subject. Instead of answering she sat quietly and scribbled down some notes on what her classmates were saying.
Aspen Odessa's eyes, if someone bothered reading them, would read shock, awe, and suspicion.
Because really. The blond professor that often taught cockamamie hoobalydoo was not only on to something somewhat useful, but she was focusing on the USEFUL part and not the whole "predict the future" nonsense. If personality could be detected simply by eye color and shape...
..then that was worth exploring.
But she also had bodiless voices telling her what to do, so that had to be factored in.
She started making a list of eye color for everyone in the room.
The Divination Professor walked back to her desk from the board and sat on it's front facing the class. "Prefect Carter here has mentioned color and shape of eyes, do you all know of any specifics in this area and their meanings to Oculomancy?" Examples people, the activity will commense soon enough.[/color]
She had gotten mixed up? She slapped her hand against her forehead in fustration
Sarah was never very interested in divintion, it was a load of rubbish in her opinion. Yet she knew something about eyes, "brown eyes are seen to be intelligent, sensible and responsible" like her eyes. "There are various varieties of bue, the calm blue, the icy blue and the electric blue. There are various variety of greens as well, there is the hazel green, the emerald jaded cat eye coloured green, and the bluey green" her mom had blue green eyes while her father had eyes like hers, chocolatey brown. Sarah would not like to have mud coloured brown. "The big eyed people are usually curious" like Sarah, she was bringing examples from life you see. Her mother said she was born with her eyes wide open to take in the world. "They are also seen as innocent and naive" no that was not what Sarah's eyes were.
Sarah was ver good at sterotyping you see...
Whether there was any truth to this Oculomancy, she wasn't sure. Telling personality traits by eye color? Seems a far stretch to me. Her neighbors had two sons, both with brown eyes - but they liked very different things. She wasn't sure you could sum a person up by whatever genetics landed in their eye sockets, but it was an interesting concept anyway. One that she would definitely keep in mind when she looked at people, just for fun.
She lowered her own hazel eyes to avoid anyone making predictions about her. Will we have to stare at each other? That was an uncomfortable thought. What about what Ethan said? I have lots of flecks of different colors in my eyes. How do you read those?
Laura was sure the Professor had lost her marbles and she really needed to find them again soon otherwise this lesson was going to be weird, how was she a little third year suppost to know stuff that not even some of the grown-ups knew, saying that to her Divination wasn't a good subject but she always tried her best but she was stumped on this question so didn't say a thing.
They better not be entities. Kurumi was done with dealing with those.
Eye color...hmmm...
That made Kurumi curious and she began to flip through her textbook idly to refresh her memory on a few things. Only problem was that her eye color wasn't...natural, which raised a question before Kurumi gave the professor's question any thought. "Um, professor...what happens if your eyes are not...normal color?" she asked, glancing nervously at Selina. Selina knew what the 'natural' color of her eyes were. They had been that way after her mother's passing and it had been Lewis that had eventually brought them back to violet. "I mean, blue, brown, green, and hazel and so on are considered natural colors..." And she trailed off since, well, it was sort of obvious what she was asking.
But now she needed to focus on the question that had been asked so that this wasn't just about her and her unusual colored eyes. So her hand went back up after a few moments. "Eye shape as well. Almond shape or more round or their size... or the distance between each eye on a person's face."
"Excuse me dear?" Elwood said, a tad confused as to what the Prefect meant. Her eyes weren't normal? What was wrong with them? She hadn't ever noticed them being--oh yeah. They were violet.
Hmmm. "Well let's just see about that." She walked towards the girl's desk and plucked the textbook off of it before flipping to a page about eye color and seeing that it wasn't there, moved onto another subject and then another subject to cross-reference the different meanings for violet. "Because there is no specific traits attributed to violet eyes like your own." she said pointing a self-manicured finger to the point between her eyes, "we will have to use the ones given in other forms of Divination. According to your textbook, violet represents one who, and I'm quoting this, 'has a deep need for emotional security and to create order and perfection in all areas of their life, They also help in and iniciate humanitarian projects to help others.'" See not all bad for being different.
"Good point about eye shape, that certainly is a factor aswell." Elwood placed the girl's book back on her desk and returned to the front of the classroom. Mystery solved!

BLINK. "Uhmm..." Kat started. Yeah, she wasn't too sure. "There are beliefs that people have about eye colors and the trait the corresponds to it. And the eye colors for every varies. Like for example since I have green eyes, my trait would be being passionate." Kat wasn't even sure if she was passionate. EXCEPT for Quidditch... and a certain someone.
At least, that was what those people before believed in. Kat is nobody in the past.
Ah a Slytherin with green eyes, how ironic. "Yes the color does often correspond to some personality characteristics of the person like you've noticed about yourself, very good Miss Hudson." And wasn't one of the Slytherin cliches that they work hard until they got what they wanted? That counted as being passionate too.

"Professor the color, shape and size all mean different things. Even itchy eyes are supposed to mean something. For example if you have an itching left eye then that means misfortune and impending sorrow." Of course she didn't believe any of this.
"Good, good. The shape color and size all mean different things and that little bit about the eye itching has been used in the past but doesn't usually have much weight to it's meaning." Good point though, every practice had its random points.

But since they were going to stick around and reveal themselves soon, the seventh year was able to focus back on what the professor was saying.
She scribbled down some notes on her parchment about the definition of Oculomancy and its variety. Louisa waited for a moment, pondering the question which she didn't have an academic answer for, before raising her hand to give some examples, "I'd say large eyes would indicate sincerity or affection." Not sure but it seemed logical. "Another example about color could be grey eyes." As in her blue!grey ones. "They might indicate practicality.. and prudence." Hehehe. Well she was prudent sometimes.
That's what the professor meant by specifics, right?
Elwood nodded slowly and smiled as Louisa gave her examples, good ones too. "Very good Miss Carter. Large eyes do mean sincerity and affection as well as trustworthiness because they have nothing to hide. And you hit grey eyes right on the nose." Awkward saying for this instance but it was true.

You know no common rooms for gosh knows how long, then a plant that keeps wanting to make an entrance around the school. Yes.. wasn't that enough, but now we have voices here to help. Sitting up in her chair a little she became more aware of the class.
So they were studying eyes, hmm what could an eye tell you. Placing her hand in the hair, "Professor could whether they eye has a sparkle or a dullness have anything to do with predicting personality? Like when someone is happy usually their eyes are bright and sparkle so to speak." She knew it sounded weird, but she had noticed that before on a few of her friends at least.
Callie didn't really pay attention to the confused look the girl was giving her after the comment about her friends, instead she thought about the Puff's answer. "Very good Miss Wheatborn! Yes, the 'light' behind a person's eyes can give meaning to them personally or how they are reacting to being around you, other things, or their environment." Good point, not one she had expected but she was glad the girl brought it up!

Like, how some people have eyes of a darker green and some have a lighter green. Maybe the darker shade indicates that the person has more of the specific trait?"
Oooh it was good to see that the older Slytherin girl who had misunderstood her previous question hadn't given up and decided to answer her next one--getting it right. "Good Miss Moreau, the lighter or darker a shade of color a person's eyes are is like the intencity in which that trait affects that person's personality."

The second year was two for two now. "Good job Miss Ryans, the placement of the eyes as well as the brightness or dullness are both key factors in your interpretations of a person's personality."

Back to her friends? These kids were seriously freaked out. They should be since their Astronomy Professor had been taken away and eaten by a plant but that wouldn't happen here. Charity had been a lovely woman but she was...older. Callie was certain she would be more aware of her surroundings not to mention faster at getting away from the plant should it come in here. "No, my friends really can't cause any harm to you, unless they fall on you which shouldn't happen." She said thinking. Nope, that wouldn't happen.
"Well do you think that those traits are appropriate to your view of your personality?" Callie asked the girl with a grin.

Sarah was pleasantly surprised that she had helped the lesson. She even got a smile. Hey, what was that noise? Sarah listened closer, wierd. Thankfully the teacher was quick to stop her curiousity. Portrits. She liked portrits. "ooh, do you have that woman who loves to eat? Scrimgour from the trophy room? Godric Gryffindor?" Sarah leaned forward on her seat. She still was trying to connect the portraits so eyes. She put her quill down and looked, her interest piqued.
Yet on closer inspection she realized that there were less famous portrits there. She looked rather shocked when she was told to be polite. She had heard it often at home. "Hello everyone!" she chirped. "My name is Sarah too!" she said to the girl, the other lady had adressed as Sarah

Ooooo more pointless questions...okay not pointless but still, stuff she didn't know. She'd been here for nearly a whole school year and it still amazed her how just about everyone knew the answers to the strange questions the professors asked. She had a theory; before the class started notes were handed out by said professors with clear cut instructions that said 'make sure Alexa never sees this'. Well, whatever, she didn't want to have those notes anyway--not until she had her own exams to worry about anyway.
Sitting back in her seat, looking rather clueless, she listened to what everyone was saying and half listened to the Professor once she started talking again.
Oh?
Other voices?
Where was this going? Lex looked on curiously as the Professor levitated a few portraits over to them. Past experiences left her not very fond of the talking kind. Still...none of these had started whining yet so...
"Hello." A general greeting meant for all of them. "Did you all die at some point or are you just made after really important people?" Because she remembered Gwen and Kendall telling her that you didn't need to die to be made into a talking portrait. One of these days she'd get one of herself.

Yay, she had been right! That Emmanuelle feel better about this lesson....
How had they gone from talking about eyes to staring at portraits?! Were they going to practice this 'eye reading' on them? That would be weird. For one, you couldn't really tell what color their eyes were, much less anything else!

Belle got out her parchment and quill ready to take some notes. But then the professor instructed them to put it away. Belle gave a quizzical look. But then she was introducing the portraits. She heard voices before the lesson but thought it was her imagination. Belle was keen to know more about the portraits of the school.

It was silent and inward, but Aspen had a great moment of SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGH.
First - they were just getting somewhere with this lesson, to something useful, and Professor Distracted lets portraits boss her around again. She needed a potion for that or something.
Second - Gryffindors. 'Nuff said.
Third - Portraits didn't have eyes. Not real ones. Their eyes were lines of ink on canvas drawn there by an artist. They weren't REAL. They were distracting from the lesson and should go back UNDER the sheet.
Aspen STARED at the Professor. S T A R E D. Read them eyes.

Alex was worried enough about reading a real person's eyes, but now he had to do it with portraits? Yippity, talkative portraits at that? They were bound to be super distracting and NOT something that Alex was up for. He could barely take notes without people talking around him, he could barely imagine how hard it would be to look for symbols in someone's eyes when they kept talking to you or snapping at you or telling you to straighten your tie.
He just looked at the portraits as he waited for the professor to go on. There were only a few portraits there, maybe he'd let some of them pair up with real people.

Jory grinned in amusement as the portraits spoke. He gave them all a wave. They seemed friendly except Clive but he thought the man was in a bad mood because he had been covered up.
The Puff was looking forward to see what the part the portraits would be playing in today's lesson.

Minerva listened to the professor and then the voices came again. What was going on.. seriously, but at the same time who cares, she really seemed like she liked Minerva's answer that made her happy. Then the sheet was coming towards them. Ohhhhhhhh It was portraits. Minerva gave a small sigh of relief, happy it was only just the portraits.
Then a thought crossed her mind, would they be trying to read the portraits eyes, wouldn't that be hard to see since they were painted on really.. Glancing at Ethan she couldn't help but smile, she hoped they got to read other students eyes if that was what the lesson was about. Looking at the portraits, she wasn't sure she recognized any of them. Hmmm why hadnt' she really seen them before.

Vickers was distracted momentarily from looking at Louisa to staring at the revelation behind the sheets. His gaze jumped from one bickering portrait to another, wondering how these was related to the eye divination they were discussing earlier. He did manage to give a shy wave in greeting to the portraits though, although he had a feeling, like most portraits, they were far more interested talking to each other than to anybody without a frame.

Laura listened to the Professor speak and then there was weird noices come from somewhere, well why couldn't anyone just wait patiently for the Professor, she looked at the Professor and listened to what the Professor was saying about Portraits wanting to talk to them, if she was the Professor she would have made them wait longer for talking out of turn because that was just rude.
"Hello.." Laura smiled at the Portraits, she wanted to know what they wanted to talk about. "Professor what would happen if one of the other Portrait frame was destroyed in a fire or something, would they have to stay in the one they are in?"

Good now they could go on to the more complicated and in depth definitions and variations. "Very good everyone, go ahead and evey get out some more parchment and ink because we are going to do a rather long notes section--"
"Honestly woman, will you just let us get started? Keeping us in the dark under this sheet will NOT SILENCE US!" The annonymous voice from before sounded again, this time the source was obviously the bulky shape under the grey sheet that was against the wall.
Calista turned with an embarrassed look towards the voice and then back to her students. "One moment." She then walked over to the stuff behind her desk and her whispering and other whispers could be heard. She then came back to her original spot and addressed the class. "We won't be doing anymore notes for now our guests would like to get on with the exercise so they can be returned to their normal places."
She levitated the mass under the sheet to the front of the room where they could all see it and then removed the sheet. "Let me introduce you to some portraits from our school."
Initially, Kat hated Divination. It was soooo boring during her First Term. When that Centaur taught it, and she usually struggled a lot just to even answer. And the click!click of his hooves were so dang annoying. The blonde was obviously thankful that Professor Elwood took over his post. At least she wasn't half-horse. In the meantime, Kat was starting to like Divination. It was cool, she says. HELLO?! Archery last lesson, ahem.
SHEESH, what was that blabbering noise... or voice... under the cloth? Whoever, or whatever, it is should learn to actually shut up. Nobody asked that thing to talk anyway! Kat frowned. Waiting to see what was under the sheet, Kat focused her eyes on it. Revealing it was just a REALLY REALLY REAAAAALLY loud portrait, Kat smirked. Well, this thing must learn from the boss. Anything to say to the loud portrait, Kat? "Hello," that was all Kat said. Raising an eyebrow, Kat's eyes wandered from portrait to portrait. A young one... and a really loud one... a redhead... Mr. French Hair was there. Ok, Kat did not know any of them.

Rather long notes?! BUT WHY?!?!
Sierra did an inward roll of her eyes (inward, because she'd get in loads of trouble otherwise) and then pulled out her parchment, quill, and ink.
...and then she blinked. There was that creepy voice again--and it was calling Ellwood 'WOMAN'! What disrespect! Sierra eyed Ellwood, silently telling her that she wouldn't take that if she were her. No matter if the friend had tendrils or not. She eyed the professor suspiciously as she seemed to strike up a conversation with some unknown person...or thing.
...and then, OH, HAPPY DAY! No notes! Sierra felt like tossing her parchment into the air and letting it land wherever.

"It's about time you've unsheethed us!" Clive Robinson said obviously ruffled that he had been covered up for so long. He belonged on the wall where all the people of the Castle could look at him! Not under some dirty sheet.
The redhead woman dressed in the frilly dress spoke up to calm the wigged Mugwump. "Clive, dear, don't be rude we are here to help this lovely professor and her students. Hello children."
"Mary, I haven't seen this many kids all at once in a long time, ever since my picture was moved from the first floor." Little Sarah Fairbanks said to the woman with the pearl earring placed beside her.
The woman with the Pearl Earring turned to the young girl with the hat and spoke to her. "Sarah, be polite. Hello everyone." Mary Banks said quietly.
Augustus hadn't really wanted to come today but he decided to stay in his frame at the last minute because these studens obviously needed a scholar to work with. "Afternoon children."
Benjamin had fallen asleep while under the sheet and the sudden light and ruckus being caused by his fellow painting subject woke him up. "Oh um, sorry. Hello everyone." Colonus blushed as he waved to the students.
The portraits!
No wonder they'd been so bossy earlier. Sierra had always thought the portraits had a rather high and unnecessary opinion of themselves. What for, at that? They were paintings!
She eyed Augustus Von Stryer. Merlin, could he not have chosen a better hairstyle?
"... ... ..."
Sierra gave the portraits an upward nod of her head as if to say 'Sup, portraits?'. Now, which one of them had used the term 'woman?!'

Hannah thought that it was funny how the professor pointed out that the whole itching eye thing didn't hold much meaning. Did anything really hold any meaning when it came to Divination? Hannah thought the woman would be impressed with the load of rubbish that she fed her, but apparently that only worked with the said load of rubbish came from the horse's mouth. Sigh! This was the last lesson of the term, she could make it through the class surely. Who knows maybe the scary plant eating plant would could take a bite out of Elwood... bet she wouldn't 'see' that coming.
Then the voices were bossing her around again. Not only did they boss her around, but Elwood actually listened to them. Hmph! She definitely wasn't a Slytherin. Then the professor removed the sheet and the voices were revealed. They were portraits. no way would Hannah let a portrait boss her around. They would get a quick smack and back under the sheets they would go.
Wait. Did Professor Elwood even ask a question? Hannah wasn't sure. Of one thing she was sure of though and that was that she wasn't saying hello back to the portraits. They needed a lesson in manners.
Professor Elwood looked excitedly from the portraits to her students to see how they reacted. The majority of them waved and smiled which was good. Then little Gryffindor Sarah Edwards spoke up, asking if she had others. "Unfortunately not, those paintings are alot more permanent than these but when I went about the Castle asking for volunteers these men and women were more than happy to help out." She said gesturing at the paintings.

O___O
"Alexa!" Callie hissed, mortified from a positions behind the paintings. She shook her head and made the kill it/stop it motion with her hand. The girl must know how sensitive the paintings at Hogwarts were, she needed these guys to be cooperative and if they felt insulted they surely weren't going to want to work. "Of course they are all important, they have paintings here at the school, right?" She went on trying to assure the paintings at the same time. "But they will inform you of their life stories here soon enough."

OH MY GOSH!
What had gotten into these kids? Had they never spoken to a portrait before? You did NOT EVER ask what would happen if you destroyed their frame, especially with fire.
"Laura dear, please don't mention those horrible things in present company." she whispered to the girl, a look of shock still on her face. "But yes, a subject of a painting, if not directly affected by the damage can move into another frame."
-------------------
Like the in the world there were most likely some skeptics in the class about working with these paintings. "So what we are going to do rather than normal partner work, we will be partnering up with a painting and the interesting and awesome person in it." Elwood walked infront of the paintings and their eyes followed her.
"Their eyes are as realistic as possible with the materials used at the time of their creation but as many of you have probably learned from a Potions Lesson a few terms ago that the photograph or painting is charmed to be like the person it represents; so if you are having trouble figuring out color based on the physical representation, ask them." They were obviously more than ready to talk. She HAD gone to the less travelled parts of the Castle.
"Any other questions?" If there were none they could now start. "What I want you to do is come pick a painting and begin interacting with it trying to pick up on they're eye color, eye size, spacing/placement, and twinkle or dullness. Once you've done that I would like you to make an inference on your parchment about what the artist was trying to say about their subject's personality."
OOC: Hey guys, so yes some of the eyes of the paintings maybe aren't the clearest but they are present. If you can't tell right off the bat, interract with the painting because their posts will help you! You can pick any painting but please try to pick one that not everyone is doing. Please post the name of the painting either in your post somewhere or as a post heading. You will have plenty of time for this exercise.
