Default Divination Lesson Three (Oculomancy)

Divination Lesson Three

Once you enter the Divination tower classroom from the ladder in the ceiling of the corridor below you will see it set up the same as usual apart from the drapes being pulled back and the windows open to let the spring air in.

The normal clutter along the front wall where the professor's desk was didn't allow for any real notion of what the leson will be about so don't spend too much time worrying about it, not good to cloud your Inner Eye! Professor Elwood is sitting at her desk absent-mindedly tracing shapes on her desktop.

"Please come in guys, and have a seat."

OCC: The lesson won't start officially until much later but won't really move on past the first question until tomorrow morning. Please read the classroom rules before posting.

She wasn't going to cry, that would just be overkill. "To the rest of you, I hope you continue to grow in your studies and to see you all next term."

That was end of the speeches for the day. "Now its time to move on with the lesson--"

"Yes, can we move ON with it already!?" A random voice sounded from a corner of the room behind the Professor's desk.

Callie eyed the corner and then grinned at the class before taking a step towards the board and writing one word on it: 'Oculomancy'. "Does anyone know what this is? Take note of the change in spelling from the more well known Occlumency." Although they were a tad similar.

OOC: The lesson has now BEGUN, please do not post your charrie just arriving, pretend you have been here already.

SPOILER!!: Callie! T___T

And he fell silent when the blonde Seer gave what he felt was a heartfelt send off to his graduating year. A pensive smile tugged at the corner of his lips, his eyes shone in gratitude-- she alone knew how much this subject meant to him, how it guided him to where he was today. Yes Divination works people, you just need to be specially attuned to its gifts....

When the Professor asked her question Vickers made to raise his hand before hastily taking it back. Yeah he thought it was about Occlumancy, but the Seer made it clear that Oculomancy was something else...

So what was it? Surprising (or not) Vickers didnt know, but he listened to the Prefects explain what it was and his gaze shifted immediately to the Head Girl, a subtle grin playing on his lips. Would they be spending the rest of this class gazing into each others' eyes then? CAN THEY HAVE THIS FOR THEIR NEWTS? --ahem--

Oh no... was the first thing Louisa thought of when the professor gave them a little goodbye speech. Not because she hated goodbyes (which she did) but it wasn't necessary to sniff and wipe her eyes with the presence of so many students. So Louisa sniffed and widened her smile at the blonde woman. She was way better than the Centaur, basically because she didn't have hooves... which made her more relatable and easier to connect with.

Louisa was about to smile at Vickers for being here as always when the weird voice echoed in the room urging the professor to talk already. Her mouth hung slightly open, her eyes bulging out a bit as she stared at where the voice came from. What on earth was that? Galileo? Nope.

And the professor obliged. The Ravenclaw managed to turn her attention back to the woman after an extra moment of staring at the anonymous. So they were going to learn about Oculomancy not Occlumancy. Hmmm. She didn't know much about that, really. Her hand was in the air nonetheless to offer what she knew. "It's a practice where the diviner studies the eyes of a person, their shape, color and even the reflections in said eyes. That's as a way of interpreting the personality of the individual, or if the diviner is good enough, see beyond personality to clues about their life circumstances." When she put down her hand, her gaze fell on her table companion and noticed that he was staring already. Louisa simply grinned at him.

Eliza smiled back at Professor Elwood when she mentioned the sunshine. "Yes, it does make it a lot nicer in here...A lot better than...than," she looked away. "Well, it looks nice anyway." She didn't want to bring up the whole incident on the Astronomy tower, not now anyway.

Though Eliza didn't personally know many, or any, seventh years - Professor Elwood's small speech left her a bit saddened. She hadn't really spoken to those that would graduate this year, but it had been a comfort to her knowing that they were around. They all seemed like nice people and they were really good at school work too. She hoped the sixth years coming in to their last year would be just as nice and helpful. She sighed and tried not to think about it anymore. At least I won't have to worry about that for a long time...

As for Oculomancy, she was clueless. As to the random voice behind the desk, she was even more clueless. Is she just going to let that go? No remarks on it or anything? She hoped she'd answer the girl who asked directly about it. Pretty sure everyone would like to know... She tried to sit taller in her desk to get a look, but to no avail. Is a house elf hiding back there? she wondered. Or...or a ghost? She'd met several of the house ghosts and they seemed friendly enough, so maybe if this was a ghost, it would be friendly too.

Selina grinned at the wink her Professor threw to her. See? It was reasons like this that Elwood really was the coolest Professor she knew. What other Professor would wink at her students? Only the cool ones- so probably Bentley counted in that category as well. The idea of Lafay winking gave Selina a stomach ache. Eek.

Once she was next to Kurumi, she poked her best friend in the side and smiled at her. She was going to miss these moments next year when Kurumi was gone and Selina was lacking in the best friend department, but they would write, yeah?

Turning away from Kurumi when the lesson started, Selina tuned into Elwood. Scribbling down on her parchment as fast as she could, the redhead looked up from her paper when she heard the random voice. What in Merlin's name? Ugh, whatever. This lesson was about Oculomancy. OH OH! She had read about that during her... extra studies.

Her hand shot up in the air, "Proffesor, its a type of divination where you look into someone's eyes and read their reflections." Actually, to be more precise it was a type of scrying, which usually was not a good thing for Selina. It really confused her head, she always saw weird things, which- for her gift- wasn't so weird. Whatever.

Laura looked at the Professor and smiled. "Occlumency, is about getting into someone mind and reading it." Laura smiled. "You could look back at some of their darkest memories and make them suffer." Laura would really loved to be able to do that to Elliot but the Professor wasn't going to know that.

A speech? This had been the first professor so far that said anything at all about the seventh years leaving. Merlin... was she going to cry? Hannah really hoped not... she didn't do well with criers. Then out of no where she heard another voice telling the professor to get a move on. Hannah agreed with the voice, but she wanted to know who said that and what was going on. Her prefect had already beat her to the punch so she would wait and see what the answer was.

Oculomancy. Hmmm... "Professor it has something to do with using a persons eyes to read them." She wasn't sure about every little detail but she knew that she was on the right track atleast.

Oh Merlin, reading someone's eyes? Now he really had seen everything. Next week Elwood would announce they were going to be reading people's noses to figure out their lifespan or something. He was not looking forward to looking at someone's eyes when they got to the practical part of this lesson, that was for sure.

"Professor, it's divination that involves reading the reflection in someone's eye," he stated, raising his hand.

Bliss heard that wrong first time. Not Occulomancy. That was actually being able to read someone's mind. Oculomancy was different, she thought to herself before raising for hand. "I think it's something to do with being able to understand how someone's feeling and what their thoughts are, by looking into their eyes," Bliss said semi-confidently. "Or something like that," she muttered afterwards. That was right. Right?

AWKWARD STARE AROUND THE CLASSROOM.

Bliss twiddled her thumbs. She thought she was right, after all her dad had told her all about different mind reading skills after he had told her that she might be telepathic. That was still a shock. She didn't even WANT to be telepathic, think about about all the trouble it would cause. There would be upsides, but there'd be downsides too. Plenty of them. Eh, well..she'd cross that bridge when she had to.

Focus-on-the-Professor.

Ella did her best not to listen to the speech the Professor was giving the seventh years. Honestly? The third year didn't even want to think about them leaving. She didn't want them to go, especially not Max and Edric. They were her brothers and who else was going to make sure she didn't get into trouble? FROWN.

Blink.Blink. Where on earth had that voice come from? The third year tilted her head to the side with a curious expression before shrugging it off. She was sure they'd find out soon enough. Oh and Oculomancy? Ella had heard of that before. It was all about the eye contact, yeah? "Professor, this is when someone reads the erm...reflections in one's eyes." She figured it was probably a lot like a really intense staring contest or something along those lines. Seemed legit.

Belle was sad that this was their last divination lesson. Not only does she have to worry about NEWT's but she will also have to pick out what she wants to be when she leaves hogwarts. She did not want to think about that right now. Focus on the lesson. Belle smiled at the professor giving her goodbye speech.
Then the professor asked a question. What is oculomancy? Belle heard that term before. She did not know where. Belle raised her hand and said, "Professor i know it is the study of predicting the future through the eyes." That is all she knew. She knew occulmency was the study of the mind, well trying to read your thoughts.

Wow. Was he going to grow attached to his professors like they clearly grew close to the students? Well, who knows. Mom and dad might not want me back next year, anyways. Hopefully they weren't missing him enough to bring him back to Italy.

Anyways, they were about to star-- What was that? His head whipped around, visions of Burbage being dragged away by an psycho plant in his head. But apparently Elwood wasn't too terribly concerned, because she just kept on going. I guess if she isn't concerned, I shouldn't be, either?

He tried to pay attention. Oculomancy? What on earth is that? Apparently it was similar to Occlumency, but that didn't exactly help him, given that he had no idea what THAT was, either. Instead of venturing a ridiculous guess, he simply wrote the title in his notes and waited for numerous students to chime in with what they already knew.

Yeah I broke that mirror, so what? ll NOT backward ll Official Gryfferin ll Lemon's favourite

It became obvious that the Professor wouldn't be answering her any time soon so she went back to her seat and thought about paying attention--yes, she'd have to think about it now. First the face painting rejection and now this. The woman was trying to make sure she never showed up to another one of these class things; clearly.

Oh Bliss. She waved back at the girl who continued walking. She must have been thinking about the lesson.

Then the Professor started talking. Hmm. The way she saw it, she could have pretended she wasn't but then she might never learn....Okay...for the sake of bettering the littl knowledge she had she straightened up in her seat and listen, but discarded every word of the woman's speech. It meant very little to her.

o_O

What a funny word that was. How did people even come up with names like that?! Great, now she really had to pay attention. Lex listened to everyone else giving the answer, she even noticed that Pao didn't have an answer to give; good, she wasn't the only one.

Dylan grinned at her greeting and leaned back in his seat, feeling in an exceptionally good mood today.

...and then a speech was being given. Erm...He wasn't a seventh year and all that. It didn't apply to him. So, the Slytherin sat there rather uninterested in the potential emotional display. He didn't really deal with those well...Kinda like when Cookie was talking to him about Walnut...It. Was. Awkward.

Hearing her question, he was in the process of answering...when everyone had jumped on it at once. His eyebrow arched and lips crooked to the side...Dylan was clearly amused..."I'm going to chance a guess and say it has something to do with the eyes." It was said out of sarcastic amusement, of course...He was admitting it.

The Captain didn't care, of course.

Minerva sat looking towards the window mind still wondering. She half heard the class starting and kept her eyes towards the window. It was a nice day out wasn't it. She turned her head enough to hear the question, but she had no clue of the answer.

Trying to listen to others responses she pulled out her quill and began doodling on her parchment. Reading eyes or minds like the other students said sounded kind of interesting. She wondered if that was the right answers and if it was, could anyone do that or did it have to be a special gift... Looking back at her parchment she began moving her quill again making circles on it half listening.

Anya played with her quill. They were... looking... into each other's eyes? ... and reading the reflections?

This could either be... really weird or really fun. She hoped for the really fun bit. And so, she took a few notes and awaited the partnering up part.

What the, Oculamancy? What the bloody heck was that? I know what occlumancy is, that would definately be easier to answer. Oh well, I guess I'll have to do a little research to get this answer. She flipped to the glossary section of her divination book and oculamancy. She then raised her hand and answered, "Oculamancy is studying the characteristics of peoples eyes to tell the the future". She was a bit scepical how that would actually work but she was willing to atleast try it even if she had her qualms about believing anything from it.

A speech! Emmanuelle listened closely to it and felt her eyes get a little misty. Yep, she was one of those aforementioned seventh years whose last Divination class it was. She nodded her head politely in the professor's direction when it was over while discreetly wiping the tears out of her eyes. Which was strange, because she really hadn't expected to cry this soon. She figured that emotion would hold off until the closing feast, but whatever. Anyway, on with the lesson, and Em jumped a little when she the voice coming from..... well, just where was it coming from, anyway? And who was it?

Okay something similar to Occlumancy. Which was reading people's memories. Hmm... So something to do with memories? "Um, using someone's memories to come up with a reading?" That would be similar to reading someone's memories, right?

Callie eyed the corner and then grinned at the class before taking a step towards the board and writing one word on it: 'Oculomancy'. "Does anyone know what this is? Take note of the change in spelling from the more well known Occlumency." Although they were a tad similar.
At his first glance at the board, Jory misread the word. He thought it was Occlumency until the Professor mentioned the spelling.

After double checking the word and putting some thought into an answer, the Puff raised his hand. "It's where someone reads another's eyes by their reflections.''

Despite mentioning the close spelling and pronounciation of Oculomancy compared to the distinctfully different art of Occlumency, a few students, albeit younger students, still mentioned to mix them up. No worries though. She just needed to set them straight.

"Actually, like I said before this is a different practice. This is a form of Divination where the eyes are used but not to read thoughts but rather to interpret reflections or other characteristics." Close but not the same.
SPOILER!!: Correct answers: Scrying and all that...

Kurumi's hand went up anyway - despite thinking she would just sit through this lesson and not say anything. She actually sort of...enjoyed this particular form because it wasn't reeeeeeeally specific to Divination. Her and Lewis communicated with their eyes all the time. It was actually what had gotten them through their roughest patch last term. The things their eyes had said to one another. "It's a form of divination where you read the eyes of another. Interpret the reflections you see there. Sort of Divination's way of turning the phrase 'eyes are the window to the soul' only in this case it is scrying." Instead of windows...or something.

And...what had that voice been?!

o_______________O
Callie was wondering if someone would bring up that cliche. "Exactly Miss Hollingberry. That phrase is exactly correct when practicing Oculomancy. Good job. Basically one can categorize some forms of this practice as scrying for the eyes." The girl, despite her unusual perkiness, still seemed to be thinking along the same capacity as usual.

She blinked and then tuned back in.

...but anyway. "In answer to your question, though, Oculomancy is when you look into a person's eyes and use the reflections you see to come up with a reading," she said.
"Good, good Prefect Greingoth." Callie couldn't understand why a few professors had told her to watch out for this one, The past two terms that she had attended her lessons, the Minister's daughter was nothing but an angel. She participated, helped with that wagon disaster in her first lesson last term, and answered her questions correctly.

Oh no... was the first thing Louisa thought of when the professor gave them a little goodbye speech.

The confused look on Louisa's face from the voice emitting from behind her was pretty comical to see but she didn't say anything about it but commented on her answer. "Exactly! All of those things are involved in the various forms of Oculomancy. And we will be studying one of those branches today."

Whatever.
"That is one way you can perform this type of Divination, good Selina." Callie smiled at the girl. Such a bright kid. She knew that she had probably actually read about the subject before.

"Good, yes dear." Professor Elwood nodded at the Slytherin's answer and made a mental note to go on further as she explained it.

The Greingoth male.

Calista hadn't had as much interractions with him as she had with his sister but he seemed alright. A Hufflepuff so he couldn't be too big of a trouble-maker, at least that's what she thought of that house. "That is certainly one of the more popular forms of the art, yes. Good job Mr. Greingoth."

"Thoughts and feelings can definately be mixed in with your interpreations, good point of view on that." Callie hadn't expected that as one of the main answers but she appreciated the fact the girl gave the class a new way to look at the exercise.

"Yes a form of Oculomancy does depend on the reflections created in the gazers or the subject's eyes." The students were much more educated on the subject than she had imagined. It proved they were smart and read ahead.

Then the professor asked a question. What is oculomancy? Belle heard that term before. She did not know where. Belle raised her hand and said, "Professor i know it is the study of predicting the future through the eyes." That is all she knew. She knew occulmency was the study of the mind, well trying to read your thoughts.
Not a very detailed answer but still technically correct. "Yes, very good."

What was he so smug about?

Calista eyed the Slytherin Captain as he was all smiles and then gave his answer. He was probably just trying to act cool for the girls in the room and she really didn't see a need to embarrass or call him out. "Yes, Mr. Montmorency, the eyes are sort of essential in today's lesson."

"Yes very good." Callie had seen to all of the hands raised and was glad to see most knew what she was talking about ready to move on?

There were professors being eaten around here, and yeah...Sierra just wanted to check and make sure there wasn't a little something extra lurking in the corners.
Oh they had noticed? Callie asked herself as if the plethory of confused looks, heads being tilted, and occasional look of pure horror wasn't enough to already answer that. She really should have given them a warning before hand should she have? What with Professor Burbage gone missing and other strange things happening around the Castle. "Everyone it's nothing to worry about I just have a few friends here to help us out with our activity. Which we will be moving onto shortly."

Repeat, nothing to worry about!

Aright time to move on. "The majority of you all mentioned reflections in your definitions of Oculomancy and that is correct but today we won't be studying the scrying meathod of the subject. Instead I would like us all to focus on the other portion, the characteristics of the eyes that will allow us insight into the person's personality and characteristics which let us make inferences into what situations they excell and fail at or any other path they may travel."

The Divination Professor walked back to her desk from the board and sat on it's front facing the class. "Prefect Carter here has mentioned color and shape of eyes, do you all know of any specifics in this area and their meanings to Oculomancy?" Examples people, the activity will commense soon enough.

A few....friends....

They better not be entities. Kurumi was done with dealing with those.

Eye color...hmmm...

That made Kurumi curious and she began to flip through her textbook idly to refresh her memory on a few things. Only problem was that her eye color wasn't...natural, which raised a question before Kurumi gave the professor's question any thought. "Um, professor...what happens if your eyes are not...normal color?" she asked, glancing nervously at Selina. Selina knew what the 'natural' color of her eyes were. They had been that way after her mother's passing and it had been Lewis that had eventually brought them back to violet. "I mean, blue, brown, green, and hazel and so on are considered natural colors..." And she trailed off since, well, it was sort of obvious what she was asking.

But now she needed to focus on the question that had been asked so that this wasn't just about her and her unusual colored eyes. So her hand went back up after a few moments. "Eye shape as well. Almond shape or more round or their size... or the distance between each eye on a person's face."

Looking at the clock perched on the wall at the back of the lesson, the blonde saw that it was time to begin class. She stood up from her desk, shook her bangles back to her wrists and made her way to stand infront of the assembled students. "Good afternoon everyone. I just wanted to say a few things to those who are here enjoying their last Divination Lesson." Yes the seventh years. "It's been an honor and a priviledge teaching you guys and helping you prepare for your NEWTs at the end of the term. I know each of you will go on to do great things and I hope that you won't underestimate the power of Foresight." She looked at Vickers, Kurumi, Louisa, Gideon, (Max if he were there) and all the other seventh years in the room and placed her hand over her heart, a saddened expression crossing over her face.

"I'm fine, Professor, thank you," Kat replied to the Divination Professor and smiled. Well, she was happy today. Optimistic and all. There must be something wrong with Kat; she's not this happy. EVER.

Oculomancy? Occlumency? WAIT, WHAT. This was getting a bit... confusing. Now, which were they going to reply to? THE BOARD. Oh... Oculomancy. Not Occlumency.

RAISE YOUR HAND UP. "It's a form of scrying or divination wherein the caster looks into another person's eyes to read reflections." How do they read reflections, anyway?

"Well, the eyes are the windows to the soul," Kat shared. HEH. It wouldn't hurt right? Sharing her not-so-secret thoughts wouldn't end her up in detention anyway. BUT WOULD SHE GET POINTS FOR THIS? Hopefully... a 'yes'. But if not, then she couldn't do anything. And no she wouldn't jump on Professor Elwood, nope.

BLINK. "Uhmm..." Kat started. Yeah, she wasn't too sure. "There are beliefs that people have about eye colors and the trait the corresponds to it. And the eye colors for every varies. Like for example since I have green eyes, my trait would be being passionate." Kat wasn't even sure if she was passionate. EXCEPT for Quidditch... and a certain someone.

At least, that was what those people before believed in. Kat is nobody in the past.

She had a feeling that they would be partnering up later on and peering into each others eyes and that sounded horrible to her. In order for somebody to look into her eyes they would be in her comfort zone. Maybe she would be wrong. She decided to not get herself worked up until she knew for sure.

"Professor the color, shape and size all mean different things. Even itchy eyes are supposed to mean something. For example if you have an itching left eye then that means misfortune and impending sorrow." Of course she didn't believe any of this.

She had some friends over? And to help with the class? Louisa's eyes lingered on that corner and tried to make any shapes or other voices out. A mysterious answer was never a wise answer with a Ravenclaw. But since they were going to stick around and reveal themselves soon, the seventh year was able to focus back on what the professor was saying.

She scribbled down some notes on her parchment about the definition of Oculomancy and its variety. Louisa waited for a moment, pondering the question which she didn't have an academic answer for, before raising her hand to give some examples, "I'd say large eyes would indicate sincerity or affection." Not sure but it seemed logical. "Another example about color could be grey eyes." As in her blue!grey ones. "They might indicate practicality.. and prudence." Hehehe. Well she was prudent sometimes.

That's what the professor meant by specifics, right?

Minerva listened to everyone as they answered the question. Then when the professor spoke again she got wide eyes, she had friends.. here.. to help, but.. they couldn't see them?? O_______O That made her very nervous, hadn't they had enough excitement around the school lately. You know no common rooms for gosh knows how long, then a plant that keeps wanting to make an entrance around the school. Yes.. wasn't that enough, but now we have voices here to help. Sitting up in her chair a little she became more aware of the class.

So they were studying eyes, hmm what could an eye tell you. Placing her hand in the hair, "Professor could whether they eye has a sparkle or a dullness have anything to do with predicting personality? Like when someone is happy usually their eyes are bright and sparkle so to speak." She knew it sounded weird, but she had noticed that before on a few of her friends at least.

Okay, so her guess had been wrong. At least she had tried, right? Anyway, moving on. Emmanuelle didn't know much about the subject (clearly), nor did she know much about eyes in general. After all, she wasn't an optometrist. But there was one thing that she had noticed over her years that might be relevant. "What about the shade of someone's eyes? Like, how some people have eyes of a darker green and some have a lighter green. Maybe the darker shade indicates that the person has more of the specific trait?"
