As you make your way down to the pasture for the first Care of Magical Creatures lesson of the term, and if this is not your first time visiting the place, you'll notice that the grassy area looks.. well, different. No creatures, besides the ones that Professor Newlin has hidden in the many cages scattered about can be seen.. or not seen, and how could you possibly miss the long covered table off to the side near the shed? What is in the cages and under the cover will stay a mystery.. for now.
Have yourself a seat on the grass, or stand if you'd rather! Not too close to those cages, though. Professor Newlin is there, laying on her stomach in the middle of the area, an open jar next to her and her finger stuck deep in the dirt.
There are worms in the dirt, after all.

Sigh. Glad that's over. Now they can finally proceed to what they're suppose to do in the first place. Of course, she nodded to Daichi when he suggested about getting fire crabs. However, Juliet saw the hesitation in his eyes even though he's the one walking to it and readying himself to get it. "yes, we need two... One for you and one for me" Juliet said. Juliet can take hers if this is making Daichi uncomfortable. Well, Juliet can't be sure but he looks really REALLY uncomfortable working with fire crabs.
The professor continued to explain in detail what they're going to do. She even said the specific instructions. Juliet quickly took her small notebook and muggle pencil to jot down what the professor wants them to do for this activity.
SPOILER!!: Juliet's notes
Step One:
Fill the bucket up with enough water to make sure the rear of the Fire Crab is completely covered. While letting soak for several minutes, lightly rub the shell with your fingertips to feel for any soft spots or cracks. (Soaking will allow any buildup, caused by its flames, to loosen)
Step Two:
With a soft bristled brush, gently scrub the entire shell using a light, circular motion. Pay special attention to any areas with buildup, mostly around their colored jewels and under the rim of the shell. Be careful not to brush areas covered in scales. They tend to be sensitive.
Step Three:
Gently massage the Fire Crab shell, under body, legs and tail with a soft, wet washcloth. This will loosen most soil. Don't worry if small flakes are released from the shell! This is just normal shedding. Rinse the Fire Crab to remove flakes.
Step Four:
Rinse the Fire Crab thoroughly. Closely inspect the shell for any irregularities, such as softening, excessive flaking, cracks, unusual discharge, or discolorations. Discoloration would occur on the jewels.
Step Five:
While still wet, place the Fire Crab back in the cage and cover with the cage with a dark colored cloth (the ones that covered it earlier). Rinse out supplies.
Just when Juliet is about to take her wand to cast the Aguamenti spell, Daichi beat her to it. She smiled as she saw him doing most of the first instructions. CHECK. Juliet crossed out the first 2 sentences of the instructions that she copied. Adding a nod when Daichi asked her about the aguamenti spell. "Yes. It's one of the first spells that was taught to me" other than Alohamora that is. Easy spells used on a daily basis. It's fun.
Like Daichi, Juliet also grabbed her own gloves and wore them... safety first! However when Juliet turned to Daichi, he looked a bit worried taking the fire crab out of it's cage. What made her smile was when she heard him talking to it. That's a nice strategy, that way he wouldn't feel much fear. Bending next to him, Juliet stared at Daichi for awhile. Before taking her own crab out of the cage she wanted to ask him this somehow. But she wouldn't want to offend him or anything. "Out of curiosity...." she started as her eyes followed the crab in his hands as he began to feel it "... are you a-afraid of uhmmm..... the fire?" her eyes followed his. Earlier Daichi has been acting a bit different after knowing they'll be interacting with fire crabs and it's not like she was eavesdropping but she heard Kurumi mentioning about the fire as she held his hand.
Juliet gave a faint smile to Daichi. Hopefully she can help him with whatever it is that is bothering him, they're partners in this activity after all but it's not like she's forcing him to tell her about it. Juliet moved her hands towards one fire crab and let it out of the cage. Adorable and expensive. Then she placed the crab into the bucket of water. Leaving it there for awhile.
The question that Juliet asked was so sudden that Daichi stopped what he was doing and looked down at the fire-crab. The fact that she was asking this meant that Jonathan had kept his promise and that he hadn't told it to anyone. This made him smile but he couldn't put the smile on his face for the outside world to see.
"I..." he began and looked at Kurumi who was helping him get over his fear. There was no point in denying it though because she already guessed it right and Juliet had probably already seen his reactions earlier. "Yes" he finally whispered, loud enough for her to hear it and now he looked at her with an almost pleading look. "Please don't tell others... only Kurumi and Jonathan know about it.." And their Ex professor from this subject but he was gone now.
He then grabbed the soft brush with a shaking hand and he tried to lightly brush the shell in circling motions. As long as he didn't do anything that would startle the creature he would be alright. And now that Juliet knew about his fear he could count on her when something happened ....right? His eyes gazed to the younger Snake for a second but when he did he didn't see where he was scrubbing and accidentally brushed over a sensitive area.
The Fire-crab began to writhe and tried to get out of the bucket with water. Daichi's eyes widened as he realized what was happening and he quickly tried to control the creature. "It's okay..i'm sorry..it's okay" he kept saying as he tried to calm the fire-crab down. "Please don't shoot fire" he added and at that moment the bucket began to steam. Obviously everyone knew what had just happened. But this didn't matter to the Slytherin. Yes it had been fire but he hadn't seen the flame, just the water steam. He looked at Juliet and let out a small giggle.

He thought they had done a good job and as he picked the crab up gently, it appeared to agree. He ran his fingers over the shell and was ever so careful in it's sensitive parts. The crab didn't protest at all. "I think he's in good condition" Terry informed him.
"Do you want to put him back in or shall I?" he asked holding the crab out towards him.
HE KNEW ABOUT GHOSTS? Theo's eyes lit up even more this time, and he grabbed his bag straight away, pulled out his notebook and stared at Terry. "Tell me about ghosts. How do you exterminate one?" This was a serious question. Theodore had his quill at the ready.

Someone DID want to be her partner, and she BEAMED up at Eliza. "Of course I don't mind." She had said they could work with her. She just didn't think anyone would.
Scooting over some, just so the Ravenclaw had enough room to get to work, Vanora once again picked up the brush and went right back to scrubbing her Fire Crab's shell, casting glances over at Eliza just to see how she was doing. And it was so far, so good.
And if she wasn't expecting anyone to work with her, she really wasn't expecting to be talked to. But it was good. Awkward silences were the worst! "I guess it was just a chance for me to come back to Hogwarts. You don't realize you miss the place until you're gone for.. a long time." She had almost mentioned how long of a time it had been. "And your Fire Crab is a girl."
She had been looking
She gave her crab one more misting of water, just to be extra sure it was clean. She smiled at her professor when she said she had missed Hogwarts. “Well, Professor” she began as she ran her finger along the crab’s shell to check for weak spots, “it’s only my first year here, and I already can’t imagine never coming back!” She wondered why Newlin paused as she spoke about it. Where has she been? the raven wondered. She wasn’t so brave as to ask just yet, but maybe some other time she would.
Her crab’s jeweled looked flawless to her amazement. She had no idea how it had managed to keep them from scuffing up too badly, but it had. “You clean up pretty nice,” she said to the crab. “OH and you are a girl. I had a feeling… Oh but I’m sure you knew all along.” She smiled and nodded at the professor for telling her what gender her crab was.
As she was checking her crab, she felt a few soft spots. Uh oh, she thought. “Professor, I think my crab may need more calcium too. Do you thi--” Her sentence fell to the floor as Professor Newlin rushed to the rescue of the attacking crab, flinging protective spells around her as she went.
She rolled her eyes at the problem that boy had caused and continued to check over her crab.

Wait! What was this? Terry stared back at Theo, confused as to why he had his notepad out in front of him, weren't they supposed to be doing this task with the fire crabs and not be talking about Ghosts. Maybe that would be another lesson in the future. "Why would you want to do that?" he asked, rather taken aback by the question. Ghosts had the same rights as humans did, they were just non-living. "Ghosts are the Witches and Wizards that had a fear of death" he informed him. It wasn't like they could do you much harm.
Theo took it as his responsibility to put the crab away and he did it hesitantly and with the crab metres away from his body but he managed to do it without dropping it and so Terry grabbed the cloth from his bench and walked over to put it on. He frowned slightly at Theo's demand and raised his brow before responding. "It's in my hand" he waved it in front of Theo's face and placed it over the top of the cage.
"There Mr Crab, you can dry off in peace and quiet" he smiled at it and then let go of the corner so it was entirely covered. Finally! They were done!
Minerva was double checking Sparks when she heard Ethan ask a question. Making sure Sparks was in a comfortable position and not anywhere that he could catch her on fire if he did spark she looked over. Checking the way Brule was moving around. Hmm maybe the Fire Crab just didn't like the wash cloth. "I'm not sure it looks like your doing it right." Minerva placed sparks safely in her one hand and leaned over closer to Ethan.
Watching him she didn't see him doing anything wrong, but the little crab did seem to want away from the washcloth. "Maybe if you try to hold Brule with your hand this way" she moved her free hand under his to help show him what she meant, "and then message gently around the creases of the shell first and work your way down it's shell." It was just an idea and kind of the way she had done Sparks, so hopefully that would work. Realizing she had maybe over stepped a boundary by touching his hand she quickly moved it and felt her cheeks go red as usual.
Moving back to Sparks she tried to remember the next step. Oh what was that next step think..think.. "Okay the next step we need to just check over the clean crab to make sure there is nothing wrong with it." she managed do get out in an odd quiet voice. Clearing her throat a bit she went back to work hoping Ethan wouldn't notice her weirdness all of the sudden. Looking over sparks she couldn't find anything wrong with the front of him. Minerva moved her finger around his shell to check for any cracks or problems, but didn't find anything. She lifted him up carefully to check under the bottom of the shell. Another place that seemed all clear.

Placing the little guy gently in the cage and gave him one last goodbye and covered him with the blanket.
Once Sparks was safely in his cage Minerva went back over to Ethan and took her bucket pointing her wand at it, "Scourgify". Once the bucket was cleaned she also cleaned her washcloth and brush. Smiling at Ethan as he finished up she picked up his brush and cleaned it as well. She walked over and placed the items where she had found them at the beginning of the activity. Once everything was put away she went back over to where Ethan was and sat down. "Thanks for working with me, it's been fun."
Ethan stopped trying to massage the squirming Brûle momentarily and looked up as Miranda scooted over to assess the situation. "Oh... okay..." he began as she placed her hand under his and started demonstrating. Well, she was certainly much gentler than he was, he noticed, as he watched the Puff's hands on his fire crab.
And then her hands were gone... much quicker than they appeared. Ethan glanced at Minerva curiously then turned back to his fire crab, smirking lightly to himself. Did he provoke that reaction? The boy didn't think about it for long though because Brûle started squirming again. Either his grip was too tight or the water was getting cold... either way, he thought it best to get done quickly.
Once he finished with the massage, the Ravenclaw set down the washcloth and looked over to Minerva as she vocalized the next step. "Check him over... alright," he confirmed with a nod. He hadn't noticed anything wrong during the bath but couldn't hurt to check again, he guessed. Oh wait... he realized that he had seen his partner rinse off Sparks and he hadn't done that part yet... "I guess I should rinse him first..." But the water in the bucket was filthy so he didn't want to use that. That would've sorta defeated the purpose of a bath. Thinking for a moment on how best to proceed, Ethan gently lifted up his fire crab and set him in the grass. They were slow, right? He was sure he wouldn't get away from him. Then he cast Scourgify and a drying charm to get rid of the dirty water, filling it back up with clean water. Aguamenti.
That would work better, he thought, as he placed Brûle back in the bucket. Cupping his hands, he scooped up the water and poured it over the shell, repeating several time. Ethan smoothed his hands over the back of the creature, then lifted him up and checked his belly. Everything looked okay to him, he thought with a shrug. Last step.. Those words were good to hear. Not that he minded the work much, but it certainly wasn't like working in the greenhouse. Nodding to Minerva as she relayed what they should be doing next, he picked up the fire crab and shut him in his cage, pulling the blanket on top down over the sides too. As he took care of the water in his bucket, he noticed the girl had taken care of his brush. "Thanks,' he said as he put away the rest of his supplies. "Happy to oblige," he added with a smile and took a seat next to her, awaiting the professor's next instructions. Or was class over now?

Gideon gingerly shifted the firecrab in his grasp to get a look at what might be discoloration in a different angle. Nope...it just proved to be the light falling on it differently. Straightening up the creature, the seventh year gave it one more quick look over before deciding nothing too abnormal appeared to be there. Taking that as his cue to finish up, especially when the professor started commenting on other people's work, he slowly moved from knees to his feet before lifting himself up to his full height and lifting the fire-crab up out of the water-filled bucket.
"Easy there..." he spoke to his fire-crab trying to assure it as he moved. He surely didn't want flames shooting out of his creature. Speaking of which...can Elijah and his charge go away? Those flames were looking mighty dangerous and oftly close. Turning his attention back to the task at hand Gideon eased his fire crab back into its cage, shutting the cage door and locking it up tight. Then taking the sheet that the professor had removed earlier, he replaced it on top, covering the cage and creature completely as before.

He evanescoed the water and filled it up again with water as he proceeded to rinse the magical crustacean. Louisa was murmuring something, and he leaned in to listen. How was Elijah getting along with Aspen? Piercing blue eyes gazes up to look at the Ravenclaw brunette. He really had no idea, and really their rapport caught even him by surprise. But then things like these isnt picked up as easily for this Ravenclaw. He does have his limitations you know.
And he furrowed his brows when Louisa said she always gets the short end of the stick when dealing with Aspen. He remembers DADA! Although he was rather distracted in HOM he didnt hear anybody screaming fire or anything disastrous from the Head Gril's table so he thought everything was was fine and dandy.
Eh Aspen was staring Louisa down? Stalking her?
"Maybe she was practicing her stalking techniques on you to use on Elijah." he murmured back. Boy you are a dead man Elijah.
He turned his attention back to his firecrab when A BALL OF FLAME shot right past himself and Louisa. "What the--?!?" he uttered and realized that Elijah has turned himself into some kind of rotating canon. "ELIJAH KEEP STILL!" he hollered out and just when he did, another barrage of flames flew their direction.
Here we go again. Cue tackling of girlfriend to the ground.

There she was, peacefully kind of rinsing her scared Fire Crab and minding her own business when suddenly she was thrown backward with Vickers practically hovering over her. Before this turned into more than just a spontaneous-heroic-tackle-during-class moment, Louisa's gaze found the shirtless curlyhead spinning round and round with a Fire Crab attached to his... chest. Mouthing an 'ow!', the Ravenclaw looked into Vickers' face and smirked, "Someone should tackle him too," she did not want him to move away though! She was pretty much more comfy like this.
Once Vickers was off her, she rolled herself toward her bucket again careful not to straighten up until she was far away from the spinning fiery boy. Her eyes glued on her boyfriend all the time as she sat cross-legged on the ground, the bucket in her lap and her hands passing over the shell slowly trying to feel for any imperfections. She would've plucked her eyes away from the Ravenclaw boy if she wasn't DEAD worried about his face getting grilled.
So far, and as long as her hands and brief glances could tell, the Fire Crab's shell was good enough.

Ok, its not like he was making a habit of tackling his girlfriend although really he wouldnt mind if he was presented every opportunity but with balls of flames spewing about here and there he MUST do the RIGHT thing.
So there they were trying to avoid getting barbecued when the Professor's holler rang all throughout the class area. Vickers turns his head and looks at Louisa, glancing over her to make sure she was alright. And thankfully she was, nestled safely between his arms.
Something about this feels familiar. Cue awkward pause.
Someone should tackle him too. Oh the Head Girl was speaking. About Elijah right? "Right." Suggestion? Command? In any case it was a good idea!
Besides even if Vickers was incredibly annoyed at Elijah's showmanship (geddit?) that was still his best buddeh and he wasnt about to let some crustacean mangle him even if it was entirely his fault.
"Elijah! Stop spinning! Just stand still and... dont look at me!" Because he was about to do something and he soooo didnt want to be greeted by a fiery fart thankyouverymuch.
He watched Elijah's movement for a few seconds, waiting for the perfect window of opportunity between his flailing about and keeping that firecrab away, then--

Thinking for a moment on how best to proceed, Ethan gently lifted up his fire crab and set him in the grass. They were slow, right? He was sure he wouldn't get away from him. Then he cast Scourgify and a drying charm to get rid of the dirty water, filling it back up with clean water. Aguamenti.
That would work better, he thought, as he placed Brûle back in the bucket. Cupping his hands, he scooped up the water and poured it over the shell, repeating several time. Ethan smoothed his hands over the back of the creature, then lifted him up and checked his belly. Everything looked okay to him, he thought with a shrug. Last step.. Those words were good to hear. Not that he minded the work much, but it certainly wasn't like working in the greenhouse. Nodding to Minerva as she relayed what they should be doing next, he picked up the fire crab and shut him in his cage, pulling the blanket on top down over the sides too. As he took care of the water in his bucket, he noticed the girl had taken care of his brush. "Thanks,' he said as he put away the rest of his supplies. "Happy to oblige," he added with a smile and took a seat next to her, awaiting the professor's next instructions. Or was class over now?
Minerva smiled as she watched Ethan finish up. She liked working with the Fire Crabs, but was happy to be done with them as well. They weren't so hard to handle, but she didn't want to see any fire near her. She didn't notice the smirk which was probably a good thing her face needed a break from blushing. Once he was finished she saw him come sit next to her which made her sit up a little straighter. Not really knowing why she fidgeted with some grass and then smiled at him, "That wasn't so bad, pretty easy actually, don't you think?" She looked away again not sure if she was sounding dumb.
Then she caught visual of the spectacles going on again. "I'm not sure exactly who that Puff boy is" pointing to the one that had been doing the cartwheels and had the Fire Crab attached to him, "but I hope he is having fun. Our points that have been lost so far will take forever to earn back and this is not helping." No she did not like points being taken, so when she saw her fellow house mates doing things that caused more problems she just frowned. THEN Vickers tackled him, this did make her laugh a bit, "Well looks like your house mate is involved now. At least Hufflepuff isn't alone." she looked over at him not knowing if he really understood the points being new, "I hope the Fire Crab is alright." The boys could handle themselves, but the poor helpless Fire Crab, maybe it should toot out a spark and get the Hufflepuff boy a bit.

Blood in the crack? Ella looked down at the covered cage, trying to remember what Martin's large crack had looked like. She knew that the crack was quite large but she didn't recall seeing any blood, and she probably would have remembered that. Blood TOTALLY freaked her out. With a nod of her head, the small blonde picked up the cage and brought Martin over to Professor Newlin, placing him down beside her. "Professor? You can fix him, yeah? Do the cracks...really hurt the fire crabs?" Frown. Ella hoped not.

What in the name of Merlin was Elijah doing?! EEEP! He'd totally freaked out the fire crab with the whole 'removing his shirt' thing and now he was making the poor thing dizzy with all that spinning! It isn't the fire crab's fault that it had latched on to Elijah like that! The poor thing was provoked, clearly. The small badger hoped that no fire crabs were harmed during the shirtless wonder's little mental breakdown.
Blink.Blink. Ohhh. That Vickers character could have been an American football player or something! He totally tackled Elijah to the ground. HEHEHE. This all could have been prevented if he had just kept his shirt on. Shrug.

Once the cage was open, Penelope bent down and reached into the cage and carefully picked up the fire crab. Moving slowly so she wouldn't frighten it and get burned, she pulled it out of the cage, carried it over to the bucket with water, and set the fire crab gently down in it. "Good," she said softly, giving the fire crab a gentle stroke on its shell before turning to get the second one.
Bending down once more, she opened the cage and reached in carefully to pick up the crab. As she pulled it out, this one seemed to get a little agitated, so she stopped for a moment, hoping the fire crab wouldn't start shooting her with its fire. Fortunately, it appeared to decide she wasn't a threat and relaxed again. Thank Merlin. Penelope carefully carried it over to the other bucket and set it down just as gently.
"Now just give it some water too." And then they'd be almost done with the first step.

Gently massage the Fire Crab shell, under body, legs and tail with a soft, wet washcloth. This will loosen most soil. Don't worry if small flakes are released from the shell! This is just normal shedding. Rinse the Fire Crab to remove flakes.

Rinse the Fire Crab thoroughly. Closely inspect the shell for any irregularities, such as softening, excessive flaking, cracks, unusual discharge, or discolorations. Discoloration would occur on the jewels.
Step Five:
While still wet, place the Fire Crab back in the cage and cover with the cage with a dark colored cloth (the ones that covered it earlier). Rinse out supplies.
So things for this pair seemed to be going well...better than certain other people... CoughcoughELIJAHcoughcough. Once the first crab was in the bucket, Lily filled it up so that the backside of the fire crab was covered before saying "Finite" and stopping the flow of water so that she could move to the next bucket without spraying her partner and everything around them. Once the second fire crab was in the second bucket, the ravenclaw went to work with an "Aguamenti." and a "Finite" once the task was complete.
"Okay... I think we can let them soak and gently try to get some of this stuff off of them." The third year said, putting her wand away and getting to work trying to get some of the buildup off of the shell. Every now and again, she would glance over at the commotion that was occurring near the professor. A quick elbow to Penelope later, the claw was talking to her again. "So..." Commence gentle massaging of shell... "What do you think he did to cause the fire crab to burn his shirt off and bite him?" Not that Lily actually thought that the fire crab had burnt his shirt off without burning the puffer himself.

It was probably weird to want popcorn, but that's where Aspen was - wanting popcorn. It was probably weirder still to be thinking about popping popcorn via fire crab farts, but again that's where Aspen was in thoughts as Elijah performed his one man fireworks show.
And boy was it a show.
Maybe it wasn't SO weird to want popcorn.
She cracked her bucket, the holes not yet finished in it, so that her fire crab could SEE. She got it lifted just in time for Vickers to TACKLE half-naked, flame spewing, mental!vampire Wilde to the ground. The Professor was being amusing too, probably more concerned with the fate of the fire crab than Elijah.
Was it going to be a year of Hufflepuff deaths? If Aspen were a betting sort, she'd put some galleons on Elijah kicking it early.
Also, that Vickers? He was part Gryffindor at least. Wasn't he at all curious to see how this would play out without his intervention? No? Would a fire crab EAT a nipple? She may never know now and that's not something Aspen could forgive Vickers of very easily. Aspen absently stroked her fire crab's shell (that was still dirty, as it SHOULD be) and continued to quietly watch.
Sarah had just finished with her firecrab when Elijah took jis top off.. Sarah caught site of his smoldering top... She wished she could just tell him to put his top on. Yet now it was gone... She tehn had an idea, she took out her wand 'Summus Vestis' she said, Z shape flick and then she had tranfigured a blue striped shirt, collered and button down. It was a really nice shirt really. She then took a leaf out of her notebook and wrote down a note:

As for the discharge.. she then turned to Bella. "You can go and pick up another washcloth." Because she needed one. "Wherever the discharge is, you're going to want to make sure that area is clean. Most likely, there is a crack that you can't see and it may have gotten infected. You can bring yours up to me when you're finished as well." Perhaps she should do a lesson on Fire Crab first aid.
Something to think about.
Vanora may not have been paying much attention to the rest of the students, especially the older ones, she had a Fire Crab in front of her, after all, but there was no way she was able to miss that screaming. And the spinning. And why in the name of Merlin did that boy not have a shirt on!?
If she wasn't so concerned about her baby, her baby who was attached to the boy's chest, she probably would have thought the whole thing quite hilarious. Really, how hard could a Fire Crab bite?
How did that even happen!?
All those questions that would probably go unanswered, because she really didn't want to know, Vanora pushed herself off the ground, and making sure to place a few protective charms around the area since the Fire Crab was shooting flames, she ran over to the pair. Well, as close to the pair as she could get without the chance of getting burned. "Mr. Wilde! I suggest you stop spinning right now or you will not have anything left for that Fire Crab to bite!" Hint hint.

Belle heard the Professor address the directions to take care of Jeremy. Belle got another wash cloth like she said and Jeremy actually seemed happy to see her. He looked like he was in a lot of pain. She got the wash cloth and looked for the crack that got infected. She saw it a little bit near the jewel but underneath the shell.
"Here you go Jeremy. I hope you will feel better." Belle cooed and was washing away the infection. Jeremy flinched at first when the infection was touched, but after a while his tail was wagging when she was about finished. "Professor i am all done cleaning his infected area. Here he is." Belle said as she held up Jeremy to her.
Then Belle noticed a fellow puff was running because a fire crab was chasing him. She was wondering why there was so much drama going on in her classes. She wished she could help the boy but she didn't really know him.He seemed like he was in pain. She was sure the professor would take care of it. It was his own fault in the first place. But Belle could not really talk to him since he was screaming and panicking.

She stood and offered a hand up to Nigel. "Let's go put these guys back up on the table and... we'll... be..." The spinning and screaming and FIRESHOOTING was a bit distracting, and Vivi promptly waved Nigel back to the ground. No burning the babies!
Hmph. Why was it that Vickers continued to find reasons to fall over on the Head Girl? "It's a shame that the reward for incompetence is having someone fall on you," she offered a bit too loudly.
“Well, aside from one soft spot, you’re looking pretty good, little crab.” She carefully and slowly picked up her crab and sat it back into its cage. She was sort of going to miss it, for a while at least. She picked up the dark cloth cover and draped it back over the cage. Right as she did so, she heard a wffft of air and felt a spike in temperature by the cage. She looked down and saw her crab had set its cloth cover on fire!
She hurriedly cast “Augamenti!!” until the flames went down.
“Finite!” Okay maybe she was over missing this crab now. “After how nice I treated you!” she scolded the crab. She knew it had probably just been startled but that crab needed to learn some manners. The cloth was only singed, and now a bit soppy, but she thought it would be ok to let it air dry.
She looked back over to the professor and the boy with the crab clamped to his skin. Well at least my crab didn’t do anything that drastic, she thought thankfully. She rinsed off her supplies one by one until they were all clean again. I hope they wash these with soap later…seeing as we don’t have any right now… She hummed a little to herself as she brought her stack of supplies back to where she had gotten them, placed them on the table, and sat back down in the grass.
It was nice to be finished with her class assignment and enjoy the pasture a little longer before the lesson was over. I wonder what we’ll be doing next time. She put her head back and let the sun warm her face. She pondered the varieties of homework they could have for a hands-on class like this and hoped they’d be assigned a really interesting creature to learn more about. Then again she would enjoy her free-time if nothing was assigned.

Fire crab back in its cage now, Kurumi looked up when Professor Newlin addressed her. Soil in the crack? Kurumi opened the cage again and took the still damp creature out of it and examined it a little more carefully. Peering into the crack, Kurumi grabbed the brush again and began to very carefully go over the crack and was able to remove some more dirt from its shell before she used her wand to cast a light Aguamenti over the shell and give it once last rinse. When that was done, Kurumi set the little guy back in its cage, shut it, and then covered the top again.
Kurumi picked up the cage just in time to see Vickers tackling Elijah to the ground. Erm...right...
And did Professor Newlin reeeeeeeeeeally need to bring attention to Elijah's nipples or the potential for there being a lack of them?
Color rising in her cheeks, Kurumi brought the cage over to the woman and set him gently on the ground. "Just seems to be a crack, no blood or anything, professor," she explained. Glancing down at her fire crab again for a moment, Kurumi chewed on her lip briefly before asking one more question. "Um...professor, is there a way I could...keep this fire crab? Just for the remainder of the term. Sort of a temporary adoption I mean."

After the massaging and all are finished Surya has decided to advance into the fourth step. "Huh, Let's see. I time for the rinsing now." Surya started rinsing the crab thoroughly and luckily there was no excessive flaking, cracks, any unusual discharges or discolorations. The jewels were shining bright enough. Everything was going good and Surya is happy that his fire crab is perfect without any irregularities because that would again increase the work for this lazy boy!

Since she was expecting all the injured Fire Crabs to be surrounding her at any minute, it was probably a good idea to put her own back in his bucket. Besides, he seemed to be getting agitated, and although it wouldn't have been the first time she was burned, it was painful. She'd rather not take a trip to see Cece over it.
Merlin knew what her friend would say.
Fire Crab in the bucket, she turned her head just in time to see Kat approach, and her eyebrows raised again. Her partner's Fire Crab was jelly? Whaaaaat?
"You mean.. its shell, right?" RIGHT, CHILD!? "That's just soft shell, as it's called." She glanced in the direction of the girl's partner, and sure enough, the Fire Crab was fine and Tag was there poking the spot. "Tell him not to poke it anymore, and to just clean around the spot. The Fire Crab is just low on calcium, and that's something the sun will fix."
And a calcium bone, but the sun was better at it.
Tag was still poking the soft spot until the professor walked by. It took him a few seconds to hear the professor because he was ever so intently paying attention to the very soft spot on the fire crab. He looked up at Kat a few times before fully realizing she had called the professor over and he turned red. Had she seen him poking the fire crab while standing there?
"Right..Will do Professor." Tag said as he stopped poking it and saluting to her that he had indeed heard her and took her orders.

Step number four. Checking her list, she found out she had to rinse the crab again. Oh lord. The crab was hot enough. Rinsing the crab again, she checked if it had a soft spot and cracks. Then she looked at the jewels for discoloration. Nothing was wrong. This crab was fine. Nothing to worry.
Occasionally, the Slytherin would check by at Tag to see his progress. "Doing well?" she asked. Maybe he was having a problem or something, right?
So Tag continued to scrub the part around the soft of the shell, as his professor had told him. An after a good three to four minutes of gently brushing around the shell Tag straightened his back, since it had gotten tired from bending over and put the brush on the table.
He then, ever so carefully, with both hands out in front of him, grabbed the fire crab and tried his best to place it in its cage. After placing the fire crab in its cage Tag pushed it in gently, lord knew he didn't want to toss it in there and get burned to death and slowly covered the cage with the towel that he had picked up earlier.
"Unless we have to do something else, I think we're done." Tag said to Kat.

"That is a very good question, Sophie!" Vanora couldn't help but BEAM over at the Hufflepuff. "Wild Fire Crabs, or any kind of turtles for that matter, don't necessarily get clean. It's usually the reason why.. at least, when we would receive rescued Fire Crabs at the reserve, they were always so dirty. So, these little guys," she gave her own Fire Crab a loving pat, pat, pat on the shell, "appeciate what you're doing for them."
Another good question!
And a much needed one. Especially with most of them naming their Fire Crabs.
Vanora picked up the creature that she had been working on cleaning and very carefully, flipped him over in her hands, so that whoever was paying attention could see the bottom shell, and most importantly, the Fire Crab's tail. "This Fire Crab is a male. You can tell by the length and the width of the tail. Males have much longer, wider tails. Females have shorter, stubbier tails."
She nodded her head at Hannah, giving her the go ahead to find out what hers was.
Still holding her Fire Crab like it was able and willing to sit on her lap, Vanora turned her attention to Kendall when she spoke up. Of course, that was something that she hadn't expected to hear, or heard of ever, and she raised her eyebrows in curiosity.
"Opals?" she asked, just to make sure she heard correctly. "They could just be their normal jewels, just discolored." She would have to see for herself. "If you're finished cleaning yours, you can bring it to me."

Scooting over some, just so the Ravenclaw had enough room to get to work, Vanora once again picked up the brush and went right back to scrubbing her Fire Crab's shell, casting glances over at Eliza just to see how she was doing. And it was so far, so good.
And if she wasn't expecting anyone to work with her, she really wasn't expecting to be talked to. But it was good. Awkward silences were the worst! "I guess it was just a chance for me to come back to Hogwarts. You don't realize you miss the place until you're gone for.. a long time." She had almost mentioned how long of a time it had been. "And your Fire Crab is a girl."

Turning away from Eliza, Vanora simply staaaaared at Cassia and her question. Not that she could actually see the question, but she heard it and that only made her stare more. Could she.. PLUCK a jewel from the Fire Crab? Because she cleaned him? And if those questions weren't bad enough, she had to go ahead and pretty her please. "No."
No. No. Nonono. "You can not just pluck a jewel from the Fire Crab." And that went to everyone who was even thinking about it. "Removing the jewels will kill the Fire Crab." Not exactly. But in a sense it did. So no.
She hoped no one else would ask.
Vanora may not have been paying much attention to the rest of the students, especially the older ones, she had a Fire Crab in front of her, after all, but there was no way she was able to miss that screaming. And the spinning. And why in the name of Merlin did that boy not have a shirt on!?
If she wasn't so concerned about her baby, her baby who was attached to the boy's chest, she probably would have thought the whole thing quite hilarious. Really, how hard could a Fire Crab bite?
How did that even happen!?
All those questions that would probably go unanswered, because she really didn't want to know, Vanora pushed herself off the ground, and making sure to place a few protective charms around the area since the Fire Crab was shooting flames, she ran over to the pair. Well, as close to the pair as she could get without the chance of getting burned. "Mr. Wilde! I suggest you stop spinning right now or you will not have anything left for that Fire Crab to bite!" Hint hint.
Stop spinning!
As Professor Newlin had started answering other people's questions, while also working on cleaning her own fire crab, Kendall let her mind wander a little. Sitting on the ground like she was, she was below the level of the crazy Hufflepuff pyrotechnics at least, and she didn't particularly care if Vickers had decided to start tackling people. Even if it was crazy garlic-breath spinny Puff with a fire crab attached to his chest. She was busy with other thoughts, like how Midir had had that one little tiny crack that she'd conveniently not mentioned to the professor yet, and how she was concerned that all the continued noise was bothering her little fire crab with the pretty maybe-opals in its shell. She didn't think it would be a good idea to check on it, just to make sure it was okay down there under the drape. Maybe Midir was asleep, after all, and she didn't want to wake it up.
Until the method for identifying if a fire crab was male or female came up, and she realized that had been another question on her mind. Since from the beginning she'd told Midir that its name might have to change if it was a girl, and she reached for the edge of the drape. Maybe I can get a peek without waking Midir up, she thought, turning to the cage seconds before she heard the professor echo the word 'opals', followed by saying that maybe Midir's jewels were just discolored. That was NOT what Kendall wanted to hear, and thoughts of investigating gender were abandoned as she turned back to look at the professor with wide eyes. Please don't let Midir hear that. It's supposed to be perfect. Well, except for that baby crack but that's not a big deal. Midir's just a special fire crab, she thought, slowly nodding to show that she'd heard the instructions to bring her crab to be looked at closer. "Okay."
She'd just...wait til the lesson was over. Stay sitting over here and make sure little Midir wasn't scared. Besides, Professor Newlin had stormed over to the crazy Puff anyway, so it was better to just stay over here for the time being. Better to let things calm down. And maybe the jewels aren't discolored.

The Ravenclaw dipped the cloth into the bucket with water, making sure her hand was far from the creature's rear in the process. After doing so, she lightly and gently rubbed it on it's shell, then lifting it carefully somewhat, she massaged the parts under it's covering, it's legs, then it's tail which she had quite a hard time locating. Upon contact with the cloth, its tail quivered as though it was afraid to be touched and it's rear released squirts of flame yet the pressure it made showed on how the water on that side of the bucket made random bubblings.
"Sorry babe.." It's tiny tail still cringing to get away from her fingers.
There was a bunch of craziness going on in their clearing...but Dylan remained focused. Some people shouldn't attend lessons if all they were going to do was disrupt...It was beyond rude...
...Not to mention all the noise was upsetting his fire crab...Well, he/she was getting fussy...and there was commotion. Obviously, the animal could sense these things...
Hufflepuffs. SIDE-EYEING YOU LOT.
...And...hearing Bee talking to and about the crab like that...It was making Dylan feel totally strange. Not sure why...but warmth was spreading through his chest like rapid fire...Gah, Dylan...just pull it together.
Focusing back on his task...........Removing the washcloth from the mock-bath, Dylan used his hands to shift the water about his crab. The Slytherin moved his fingers carefully along the body of it, massaging him further. He could feel pieces of debris flaking off...Meh, gross.
Now...to drain the water...
"Make sure to be careful. I'm taking him out of the water..." Yes, because he needed to rinse the fire crab...and he didn't want stray flames scorching her pretty face.
"Aguamenti." He carefully held he crab in place with one hand and held his wand with the other, rinsing and inspecting as he went. To be honest, Dylan didn't too much know what he was looking at...but nothing looked out of place. Therefore...he got the stamp of approval from him.
"How are you coming along over there?" The silence might have been slightly awkward and telling from moments before.

Next step was to rinse the little creature right? More appropriately, little girl. She knew it was because she heard the Professor telling one of their classmates that female fire crabs had short and stubbier tails. Obviously, the one in her bucket suited the description.
So yeah, it was a girl.
Rinse. Rinse. Rinse. Once she have done so, the Ravenclaw went to inspect its shell for any signs of irregularities as the Professor called it. Excessive flaking? Nope, not excessive. She wiped a few flakes from its body with the washcloth. Cracks? None. But it did have that diamond shaped mark somewhat. Surely, it didn't count. Softening? Beezus patted its shell gently. Nothing. It was all good. The gems and jewels however were turning a bit paler in color. Yet since Professor Newlin said discoloration was normal, then she'd have to assume that her fire crab was healthy and ready to go back to its cage.
Beezus had barely touched the animal in an attempt to carry it towards it's cage when she heard someone scream from where most of their peers had assembled. Leaving her fire crab for a second, she took a glance at them to find out what had caused the commotion.

HIM? That Hufflepuff was shirtless! AGAIN! UGH. This got the brunette staring for moments once more, just like in one of their Transfiguration classes. Why does she always see him almost naked?! That was just awkward. MEH..Apparently, a fire crab had taken a liking to his nipple too. HIS NIPPLE! What in Merlin's----then Vickers came 'round to tackle the troublemaker.
..That's when she heard Dylan's voice. And as she was a bit distracted with what was happening on the other side, she hardly understood what he told her. "Err...huh?" Beezus questioned. "Sorry..you were saying?"

Crabs lack calcium as well? Ok... these things have the nutrition of a human. Merlin it was scary. Nodding to the CoMC professor, Kat said "Alright, Professor, thank you very much." Pssh. Didn't expect her to be polite now, didn't you?
Looking back to Tag, Kat resumed her work.

I don't think we have anything else to do but wait now."

FOR REAL???? Juliet's eyes blinked a few times as she is now staring straightly at Daichi. Her cousin not having to tell her about it could only mean that Daichi's fear for the fire is really big. So this is why he has been acting a bit different the moment the Professor talked about fire crabs. Also the reason why Kurumi has been holding his hands. Here Juliet thought the two are sort of dating or something. But then again, Daichi has been eyeing Indy.
Teenagers are weird and complicated to understand.
But it did put a smile on her face as she moved closer to Daichi. Raising her pinky "I promise" and that will be kept in her grave.
Taking the fire crab off from the bucket and starting to rub its shell with her fingers. There are a bit of soft spots... hmmm... cracks? Not too much. Or maybe it's just her. Juliet also took a brush when she saw Daichi taking his. Then slowly she brushed it onto the shell in a circular motion. She and Daichi are in the same pace right now. It's easier to do it together.
"It won't breathe fire as long as your careful with it" she smiled. Of course it wouldn't right? The professor did guarantee them about it, sorta. But come on what's the worse could happ--- errrr, never mind.
Her eyes widened as she stared at Daichi somehow panicking as well about it. Juliet immediately took her wand out, in case anything happens. She was just thinking about this. "Carefuuuuul" her heart also skipped a bit. Then she heard Daichi talking to it. Oh, good idea. It could also work. Maybe. But seeing as the fire crab didn't go berserk made Juliet finally breathe.
Thank Merlin for that.
Juliet is now massaging the crab, slowly and surely. Just like the instructions had said. Then she heard Daichi giggled... which made Juliet giggled as well. She nudge his arm with her elbow and looked at him, still giggling over what had happened. "Don't do that again" teasing him. But really though, don't do that again.
Elise was preoccupied trying to convince her fire crab not to fart fire into her face or onto her hands or whatever. So much so that she didn't realize that Nessie, the pretty redhead Puff captain had appeared next to her out of nowhere.
Hearing her voice, Elise jumped about a foot into the air. "Eeeeep!" she squeaked before realizing that she was probably scaring the animals. "Whoops?" she said sheepishly, picking up her fire crab gently and stroking it. Shhhh, little fire crab. Don't singe anything. Good fire crab.
"You right," she beamed. "We can! The fire crab I drew last year didn't singe me. Or my paper. So this one shouldn't either." she said, half trying to convince herself.
"It's okay," she shrugged, nudging her own bucket closer to her with her foot and pulling out her wand. "Aguamenti." she muttered, filling her bucket about three-quarters of the way so that it wouldn't overflow when the crab was put inside. And she did put the crab inside, soaking its rear. The crab seemed to shoot out hot bubbles in shock, but seemed to calm down.
Soak.
Good. Now that her fire crab was soaked in water and less dangerous, Ness could calm down. She waited a few moments and watched Elise for a short while as she did so. Then with a cringe on her face, she placed her hands onto the creatures shell and began rubbing the shell to feel for soft spots and cracks. "We'll be fine I think. You're doing a good job." She really was and so was Nessie. So far so good. No chaos and no problems. Perfect.
"These creatures are a bit um..ewwy." Said Ness to Elise whispering the last bit. She didn't want the creatures to hear in case they decided to go all crazy. You never knew with these animals. They weren't cute like pygmy puffs or anything of that sort and surely not good looking like Professor Williamson.
Brush. Yep that was what next. Nessie lifted up her soft bristled brush and slowly put it towards the fire crab's shell. Then gently began brushing his shell in circular motion. She wasn't like any of this very much, but she continued thinking about how she'd be able to feel clean afterwards. She focused on a jewel and then brushed around it carefully, only looking up once to check on Elise.
The younger Ravenclaw seemed to be a natural at this. "Everything going good?" she asked just to make sure.
