| | Arithmancy Study Laboratory
Not to far from the classroom where Arithmancy lessons are held, there is a room that looks like it has not been used properly for sixty years – or 17 years, when Professor Fox taught the subject. It has been cleaned up nicely, however, with all the dust gone, books and other objects placed neatly on the bookshelves located at the back wall of the room. The walls have been painted a lovely salmon color, with small white jasmines in a line around the middle of each wall.
The bookshelves contain various numerological texts, from specifics about a number to about calculating the map of your future, as well as several abacuses on one shelf to be used as counting aids. Please note, some of the books might be quite old, but they are well cared for, so should any harm come to them, then the price to pay will be heavy.
There is a large blackboard at the front of the room, which is charmed to write coded messages on it every once and awhile. You'll need to use your knowledge of cryptic messages, however, to translate it into English. Lining one wall is a row of windows, overlooking the Quidditch Pitch, and the opposite wall has smaller boards in which students may write out their calculations and teach each other, if desired.
The chamber may be used by students for puzzle solving and extra time to study the art of Arithmancy; all the books and tools that you should need could be found along the bookshelves. However, on the off chance that it is not there, Professor Hadley's office is right next door, so feel free to ask her for materials you may desire. All students using this room are expected to follow the honor system, and any abuse or inappropriate use of the classroom will result in immediate loss of house points and/or detention.
Rather than desks, there are several wooden tables scattered about the room in no particular arrangement with four or five chairs surrounding each table. This creates the perfect environment to bring a buddy or two to work out some difficult calculations and compare notes. You are encouraged to work with others, but do remember that cheating is NOT permitted and shall result in no house points and/or possible loss of points. There are also two [purple] armchairs located in the far corners of the room which are perfect for snuggling up with a good book or working out some homework questions.
Just remember again, Hadley's office is right next door, so keep your voices down unless of course you require her assistance. OOC: You are welcome to use this thread as a free roleplay area, but just be warned that Hadley may stop in at any given moment... so don't be doing anything you don't want her to know about. Feel free to use this to study and enhance your Arithmancy studies as well; please indicate in the title of your post if you require Professor Hadley's attention. Just remember that white jasmine is one of the flowers for the number two, which is about harmony and connecting; of which, you are all connecting your futures here at Hogwarts. And of course, all SS rules and Arithmancy-specific rules apply, always. |

| For you Madame Professor Hadley!
Sutton was lost. She was lost, lost, lost. Lost with a capital L. Boy, was she lost.
She felt like she had gone up and down the staircases three hundred times trying to find her way out of the maze. She could have stopped and asked someone for help, but that was just not the kind of thing Sutton did. She couldn't embarrass herself in that way in front of others... especially not people she knew.
Walking around, she passed an office and a classroom, and then she came across what looked like an empty classroom and library combination. Well, this looked as good a place as any. Sutton was tired, and she just wanted to sit down. This was all so confusing. Magic was hard. Hogwarts was hard. She hadn't made any friends, and the professors all seemed so... BIG!
After peeking into the room and making sure it was empty, she came in and walked over to a table in the corner, setting her things down, and then dropping in a chair and pulled her knees her up to her chest, curling up in a ball. "Maybe I can just stay here and no one will ever find me..." she thought to herself. Putting her head against her knees, Sutton quietly just began to cry...

If anyone needed to brush up on their Arithmancy skills it was Presley Black. The girl was practically mentally handicapped when it came to the magical precision of numbers. And being in Ravenclaw, mental handicaps tended to get you made fun of. So on her second day back, before they'd even had an Arithmancy class, Presley was in the lab studying her heart out. She was determined to get no less than an Outstanding in this OWL, but if she didn't improve soon, she was looking at an A or maybe even a P. Either of those grades was enough to make the fifteen year old burst into tears.
She would have asked for help, but ever since she'd snuck into the prefects bathroom in her first year she'd worried that Professor Hadley wouldn't want to help her, and would get angry with her for asking. So there she was, parchment and books spread out all around her, trying to make sense of the random numbers dancing across the pages.

In desperate need on checking some information against one of the texts she kept in her Study Lab, Fina headed that way and opened the door. She didn't expect to see anyone, to be honest. And certainly not someone over there, crunched up in a tight wad, crying softly into her knees. It took Fina a moment to swallow the shock, thereby, and approach, sliding gently into the seat beside her. "Er... are you okay, dear?" She asked hesitantly. Quote:

Perplexed, she observed the girl for a moment as she spread out her belongings and books to decipher before her. "If you need any help, let me know," Fina informed the girl.

Sutton jumped suddenly and looked up with a small gasp when she heard a voice next to her. She had been so absorbed in her own despairing thoughts that she hadn't even HEARD anyone else come in or sit next to her. With wide, sparkling eyes, the third year stared at the woman sitting next to her. This had to be a professor. What a great first impression she had made!
Immediately tucking away her tears and sitting up properly in her seat, Sutton made the conscious decision to avoid the professor's kind but complicated question. "Am... am I not supposed to be in here, professor? It's just... the door wasn't locked, and there wasn't anyone in here so I just thought..."
Actually, what she had thought, Sutton wasn't sure. Now that she looked, she noticed this couldn't be the kind of room people simply wandered into. There were lots of books, but they all seemed to be about roughly the same topic. As her eyes scanned the spines nearby, words popped out at her such as: Arithmancy, Numerology, Finding your Path. Sutton had no idea what any of this meant, but this was probably a place for older students or even just professors...

"Thanks," she replied, with no real intention of asking for help. She bent back over her parchment. What on earth was an Essence Cycle? Presley was pretty sure she'd never even heard the term before, but that might have been because she was still trying to figure out an earlier part of a lesson when the term was introduced.

"Professor Hadley, Arithmancy Professor and Hufflepuff Head of House," she said, by way of introduction. Perhaps the girl would open up to her now..? Sutton blinked at the woman a few times. She seemed lovely and sweet and very likable. "Arithmancy?" Sutton asked allowed, thinking it over for a moment, and then a slight smile twitched at the corner of her lips and she let out a light laugh. "Did you know that almost sounds the same as the word arithmatic? That's what this reaaaaally old professor at my Muggle school would call mathematics. Math was one of my favorite subjects at ho--..." The lump in her throat choked her off, and she looked away from the woman again.
Hufflepuff?! Sutton positively brightened at this and extended a hand to the professor to introduce herself. "I'm IN Hufflepuff! My name is Sutton Rose Josephine Piatek! I'm a third year... just transferred in this year... I was homeschooled before..." she explained, now acting positively chatty.

Slowly though, she nodded in concurment when the girl said it sounds similar to Arithmatic. "Well yes, Arithmancy is, by definition, divination of numbers." Oh and this girl said math was one of her favorite subjects!? "Excellent then. We'll look forward to seeing in you class."
And even better; the girl was a Hufflepuff!!! A transfer student, at that, and her middle name - one of them - was so similar to her first name (not that the girl knew that). "And an extra warm welcome to you, Miss Piatek, for making it into Hufflepuff! How are you adapting to your new classes? Are the students treating you alright? Or, more relatively, are your fellow Hufflepuffs being nice to you?" Because if they weren't, well, she was going to have to have a chat with Miss Lecium, Miss Dixon, and Mister Rasting. Promptly too, at that.

Promptly too, at that. Sutton's eyes widened in astonishment. An area of magic that was all about numbers?? She was pretty sure Arithmancy was going to be her absolute favorite class at Hogwarts... but she didn't say that out loud, afraid she'd seem like she was trying to suck up. Her level of excitement, though, clearly showed in her face and body.
As her head of house began asking her questions about school, Sutton wasn't sure what to say, but it seemed rude not to say anything when this woman had taken the time to talk to her. "Well... I get lost a lot..." she began slowly as she tried to think how her first days had been going. "And flying is absolutely terrifying!" Yeah, that lesson hadn't gone so well for her. Hopefully flying wasn't a necessary part of being a witch.
Truthfully, she hadn't met many of the other students, but most of the ones she had met so far had been Hufflepuffs. "Well, I've met one of the Prefects... Belle. She was really nice to me. An ink bottle broke in my trunk, and it got all over this picture, and she showed me how to use magic to clean it up and fixed my picture." Hmm... who else had she met... "Oh! And I met the Quidditch Captain. She was nice, too, but she seemed tired when I met her in the Common Room! Other than that, I've met a couple of boys..." Suddenly realizing how it would sound if she stopped there, her cheeks reddened slightly and she quickly stammered on. "Err... not like that... I just mean... Well, this one kid thought it would be funny to pretend to be a... dementor? I think that's what they called it? Yeah, well, I was up in a tree picking fruit, and he flew by me in this big black robe, and it scared me, and I almost fell out of the tree! I was just hanging on the limb, and the boy flying around just laughed! But then an older boy told me to let go and he'd catch me, and I did, and he did. Soo..."
As Sutton recalled the day in the orchard, she renewed her vow to find out who the boy had been and make sure she'd pay him back. Nothing NEARLY as dangerous as him almost making her fall out of a tree, of course, but something harmless... something that would just scare him... Hmm... she needed to find out who he was first, though...

From the Owlery, Vickers makes his way down to the Arithmancy lab, his book bag slung over his shoulder and a curious looking parchment in his hand. He had just finished working on this scroll and he figured, who better to ask to try to crack it but Oakley Gunther.
Yes thats how confident this Ravenclaw was of that Hufflepuff's abilities.
He settled himself into a study table and set his book bag aside, taking a peek at the scroll as he waited for the Oakey to arrive.

Oakey had a small feeling in his gut as to why Vickers asked him to meet in the Arithmancy Study room. He made guessed, expecting a rather obvious answer coming from the 7th year Ravenclaw.

He set it down and let off a loud and uproarious laugh. "Can I get a copy of this?" he said with the large grin on his face. It looked beautiful with all the heroes laid out on it.
He looked down at it again, but this time to try and decipher the message Vickers left him. Every now and then a small smirk or a quick laugh would leave Oakey. Especially when he would come across heroes he was sure no one else would know, like Namor, Luke Cage, and Yellowjacket.
"I think I've got it." Oakey said said lifting his head up. He looked back down again at the heroes though and back up at Vickers. He was Seventh Year Ravenclaw, there may be more to it then what he thinks. "but, can I look at your decoding system too." |

Well now looks like Oakey liked what he made, based on the Fifth year’s laughter. He was rather proud of coming up with this idea for Arithmancy, crossed applied other things he learned from his other subjects. ”You want a copy? Sure thing….” the Ravenclaw nodded happily, reaching out for his bookbag and drawing out another parchment, this time longer than the scroll he showed Oakey. ”They’re kinda a mixed set—DC and Marvel, but most are plenty recognizable so they fit their letters quite right.” he grinned.
Once he let the Hufflepuff geek look through it he said ”So what do you think the message says?” |

"This is really cool Vickers." He said taking the second parchment for himself. He would enlarge it later and stick it to the wall above his bed in the Common Room Dorms. "Got anymore on you?"
Oakey wouldn't mind decoding more heroic phrases.

Oakey wouldn't mind decoding more heroic phrases. "Perfect!" the Ravenclaw beamed. So now he knows the decoding system works. "You think so? Thanks man. It would be one way to pass messages around I figured, I mean its something like present day hieroglyphics where to others its just people but to those who knows more about the 'language' it means something else." he said as he stood to collect both parchments. Now he can hand these over to Professor Hadley. He paused for a moment when the Hufflepuff asked if there was more "No I just made this... " he said as he lifted the smaller scroll "...I wasnt sure it was going to work at all. Maybe in the future we can use this to pass secret messages around." he grinned giving the Hufflepuff a knowing look.
