With one last look at the classroom arrangement, Josephina casually flicked her wand at the door and opened it. On each student desk was a single peppermint humbug. After selecting your desk for eternity for the year, a look at the chalkboard will give you today's starting memos.
Greetings and welcome!
Please take your seats and enjoy the candy (my favorite, for those who are wondering!). Take out your textbooks and some blank parchment, and we will begin shortly.
Always,
Professor Hadley
ooc: as I mentioned, class won't officially start till tomorrow, but take your seats. Keep chatting to a minimum. Read my rules. Any questions, PM me (or a Prefect ;D). See you all soon <33
Eliza slowly walked into the classroom, dragging her feet a bit. Not because she was tired, because she made sure she'd always slept enough for a full day of lessons, but because she really wasn't sure about this Arithmancy thing. Sure, she was a Ravenclaw, but she really fell more into the artistic side of that spectrum and not so much the mega-human-computer side. Anything with numbers tended to get a little...confusing for her.
As she went to find a seat, she read the note on the board and looked back to the candies on the desks. She'd never had them before, but they looked good. Well that helps things a little, she thought. She gave a small smile to the professor and said, "Hello Professor Hadley. Thank you for the candy." She tried to perk up her smile a little more. She didn't want the her to think she was being rude of course.
She sat down at a desk and took out her book and parchment. No one here that I know yet... she observed. No one that I'm really on desk partner terms with anyway. She wondered if Cora or Beezus would take this class. She popped the candy in her mouth, folded her hands on her lap, and swung her legs back and forth under the desk, hoping someone would come sit by her.

Despite not always doing the greatest in arithmacy, Gideon still found himself wanting to go to the class. So when the first lesson's announcment had been posted, the seventh year had noted the mention of day and time to make sure he was there. Then when it was time, he made his way down to the second floor after grabbing his textbook and supplies from the dorm. He stepped inside the familair classroom, spotting Hadley and a good number of students already there.
"Good day, Professor Hadley," he greeted with a polite nod as he walked towards the woman. Gideon then diverting and moving to take one of the empty tables. The boy sitting down in the chair and getting out his book, parchment and quill from within his bag, setting it down in front of him ready for the start of class.

Cassia entered the classroom hesitatingly. Because she really felt that Arithmancy was a HUGE subject and she wasn't sure whether her small limited mind could handle it. But she took the risk and entered the classroom. Her bag slung over her shoulder the second-year stepped near the Professor and nodded at her. She really wasn't ready to talk she was keeping all her concentration and words and everything for the HARD lesson.
She chose a chair that is far away from students, well the furthest one in the corner. She didn't want to be distracted. She sat there ,eyes widened watching the older students who were at ease talking among each other. How could they manage to do that when a HARD lesson was about to start!
The second-year was looking around her as if trying to decipher the furniture in the room or something and she suddenly jumped noticing that there was something on the desk. WHO PUT IT? She thought feeling alarmed. Cassia squinted her eyes at it. What's thisss....oh Candy hehe. She reached for the candy but stopped her hand inches from it. Why is there candy on my desk.
She got suspicious and decided not to eat the thing. WHAT IF IT WAS A TRICK. Yup. She gets all paranoid when trying to concentrate and think.

Lana smiled happily was she walked into the classroom. Arithmancy was really growing on her and she was actually starting to take interest in it. It made sense to her to an extent and she wanted to know more. Plus, she felt that if she keep up with it, she could possible help her sister with it. They did seem to work well together when it came to the subject.
Stopping just inside the entryway, Lana scanned the room for a place to claim as her own. Spotting on not too far from the front, she finally ventured in. Approaching her seat, she read the board and nodded toward her professor. "Good day, Professor. Thank you for the candy," she smiled as she slid into her seat and prepared for the lesson.
Pulling out her textbook and some parchment, she set them atop her desk and waited for the lesson to begin.

Arthimancy...so not Hannah's favorite. She hoped this class would go by as fast and painless as possible. She looked around for any familiar faces and didn't spot anybody that was important. She spotted the professor. "Hello Professor." She wondered what it was like being the head of house over the puffers. She wondered if she was ashamed on the inside about it.
She took a seat and turned her nose up at the candy. Hannah just was not i a good mood today. She wanted to go up to her dorm and just be left alone. Apparently that was too much to ask at the moment. She took out her textbook and parchment and waited for what ever hard task was in store for them. Ugh...she hated Arthimancy...it just didn't make sense to her.
THIS would be an exciting class. Because all the others that actually involved magic had been incredible disappointments. But as far as Aidan knew, you didn't need to be good at magic to be good at Arithmancy. So he was READY.
"HI!" he shouted at greeted the professor as he bounced into the classroom.
He'd be taking a front row desk again. Yup. Front and center.
And once seated, he popped that humbug in his mouth. A professor that gave candy? Professor Hadley was well on her way to becoming his favorite. MHM.

Dylan entered the classroom a little hesitantly, this was going to be not so fun. Having to work with those number thingies, he had done a bit of that before just for fun and it was not fun! Here he was attending one of those number classes, he just hoped that it wouldn't be too hard for his first number class. Cause he was not good with numbers, so the professor would have to go easy on him since he had no experience doing all those complicated number stuff.
He looked up and saw the professor was standing there, so he stood up straight couldn't show him not happy about the class. "Hi Professor! Here I am all ready to start the lesson" he said as happily as he could before he went to find a seat and sat down. Ooo what was this? looked like one of those humbug thingies that his dad had given him once, that was good tasting candy. Well he loved candy and his was no different so without hesitating he ate popped the candy into his mouth. Well if this was the professors way of welcoming him into the class then she was going the right way about it. Hmm candy his favourite!

"Good day, professor," Kurumi smiled as she made her way towards her usual seat riiiiiiiiiiight in the front and set her things down. Candy? Okay, maybe now the professor got a little bit of an eyebrow raise, but nothing too rude. Kurumi just had things about eating in the classroom...and a certain Muggle Studies professor was making her flat out protest it entirely in her own quiet way.
So, Kurumi gently pushed the sweet to the side as she set her things out on the desk. She would nibble on it later, just not right now.

Even with subjects that he usually wasn't that fond of.
Not that Arithmancy was one of those but still.
"Hello Professor." The Prefect greeted Professor Hadley softly upon entering the classroom before allowing his eyes to rest on the message on the board. Reading it, Lewis moved forward so as to not be in the way of the students following him. Once he was done he was already half-way across the classroom which was where he stopped to look around for a free seat.
His eyes falling on a couple of familiar faces, he directed a smile at Louisa and a slightly half-hearted nod at Vickers before turning around on the spot in search for...oh, there she was. Before sliding into the seat on the desk next to hers, Lewis ran his hand across Kurumi's arm to get her attention. "Hey." He said quietly with a small grin while placing his textbook and some parchment onto his desk next to the candy the professor had put there.
The first year wasn't sure what to think. He loved anything having to do with mathematics, to be sure. But this class... Well, when your AUNT is the professor, things aren't quite as straightforward.
Nevertheless, he walked into the classroom and was pleased to see that it was pleasantly full, though there was no sign of his Auntie Fait-- NO, Pao, it's Professor Hadley here. He didn't want to be the first one there and look over eager. But he didn't want to be the last one and look like he didn't care. And now I'm way overthinking this.
Step one was to find a seat. He made a quick scan of the classroom, not really expecting to see anyone he knew. The only person he'd really ever talked to before was... Kurumi! With a slightly queasy -- yet good -- feeling in his stomach, he made a beeline towards her. With five desks to go, he noticed a boy sitting next to her. A good-looking boy. And he looked quite comfortable with her. Too comfortable. He was.. stroking her arm! A twinge of jealousy colored his stomach now, but it was too late to turn back. They were sure to have seen him coming right towards them.
His heartbeat quickening slightly, he slid into a desk by Kurumi. And her boyfriend. He spotted a badge. Oh! That's our Prefect! And it explained why Pao recognized him from somewhere. What was his name..?
"H-hey, Kurumi," he managed to get out somehow before quickly turning his attention up to the front. He began to appear earnestly engaged in reading and following the directions in an attempt to cover up his embarrassment.

Kurumi had actually heard his voice before he had touched her arm, so she wasn't startled at all by Lewis' arrival and her cheeks flushed at his subtle touch. "Hi," she smiled, placing one of her hands on top of his and rubbing her thumb over his hand for a moment before resting it back on her quill.
It was sort of nice symbolically that Lewis was the one sitting next to her now in Arithmancy when the spot had once been filled by a different Hufflepuff - a one Treyen Lockhart. Not that Lewis was taking Treyen's place or anything. That was an impossible task. It just had symbolic meaning that was really only something Kurumi could understand and appreciate.
Smiling a bit more, and perhaps giggling softly as well, Kurumi's attention was momentarily taken from Lewis' green eyes when Logan greeted her. "Hey Logan," she replied. "How is one of my favorite first years doing? You finding your way around alright?" If not, she was more than willing to help him. Just like she had on the platform back in London. "Oh, Lewis, this is Logan. Logan, this is Lewis." She could have mentioned that Logan was a first year in Hufflepuff...but that much was obvious right now and, well, introducing Lewis as her boyfriend usually caused her hair to turn pink.

"Ma'am after class can I speak with you about something?" Might as well ask now. Since there was no one else in the class at the time.
Josephina was perched on her desk, with her ankles cross flipping through Witch Weekly - November's issue, when she glanced up to find one of her older Hufflepuffs standing before her. "Of course you may, Oakey." She nodded, making a mental note to stop him if he forgot at the end of the lesson about his request to speak with her.

The fifth year strolled into the classroom, his gait slowing as he entered. First one here? The Ravenclaw didn't exactly pride himself on being early... but at least he wasn't late. "Good morning, Professor," Ethan greeted the woman as he walked past he desk, and then, "Thanks for the candy..." as he noticed the message on the board and aforementioned sweet on the desk he chose.

Quietly, she then made her way to a seat off to the side and towards the back.
After reading the board and slipping the candy into her bag, she pulled out her parchment, quill, and ink and started to doodle on the edge of her parchment. Maybe she would talk to someone if they decided to sit next to her but for now her doodles were enough to keep her occupied.

The fourteen year old stepped into the classroom... and took a moment to blink around. Only a couple of people were seen dotted around the class. Really?! Was he... early?! BLINK. Yeah... this was even more weird. But... it meant that he got the chance to select a great table in the class, right? Right. And that was AWESOME.
"Hello Professor Hadley!" he said, grinning at the woman as he started walking over towards an empty table in the middle of the classroom. Yeah... perfect seat! He sat down and dropped his bag down to the floor, eyeing the candy on the table. Had... Hadley given them sweets before? Maybe, maybe not. And a quick check of the message on the board told him that they were allowed to eat it! AWESOME. Sweets in class! Alec reached over and grabbed the peppermint humbug before unwrapping it and popping it into his mouth. There. See? Awesome class was awesome already. He bent down and took out his textbook, a blank piece of parchment, a quill and an inkpot. Right. He was ready. GRIN.

Though, we might have a little trouble controlling Cardigan, seeing she gets on a high with even the littlest amount of sugar. It can get quite out of hand... "Good day Professor Hadley! Should I eat it now, or later.... Well, it's not always the best idea for me to eat candy at a time to learn, she thought, unzipping her backpack and slipping it in. Whew! That was a close one!
Cardigan spotted her friend Lily across the classroom, and gave a little wave, not wanting to scream and possibly disturb anyone. Though, she wouldn't need to. Just in case...

She had nothing against Professor Hadley, at least, and gave the professor an absent smile as she'd entered the classroom, twisting a curl of pink and auburn hair around her finger. "Hi Professor Hadley," she said, noting the other students who were already there and making her way to a seat not exactly next to Vickers, but near enough that she could hopefully crib off of him if she got entirely lost. She didn'tthinkthere woudl be too much problems with her copying if it was merely to understand the subject, and it would save her having to ask the professor to repeat herself because she'd gotten bored and started sketching again.
So far it looked like all they were doing was waiting, and she settled in her seat, fidgeting a little as she pulled her textbook, some blank parchment, a quill, and ink out of her bag. Obviously they were going to be expected to take notes on something or other, and she slid the peppermint off her desk and into her bag. Maybe she could figure out how to transfigure it into chocolate later, or ask Patrick if they could coat it in chocolate in the kitchens or something. Peppermint by itself wasn't really her thing, but she'd keep the gift. Unless they were supposed to be doing something with it, since she'd noticed Vickers counting the stripes. That wasn't in the note on the board, though, so she just scrunched down in her seat and started idly sketching her fire crab from CoMC on a spare parchment. She wasn't doing anything wrong.

"Hello, Professor Hadley." She pipped up. Ira quickly took a seat at a pair of empty desks and started pulling out her textbook, parchments and kept her quill ready, and waited for the lesson to start.

She beamed and waved at Vickers as she claimed a seat nearby, not close enough to suffocate the boy (because she can be suffocating) but close enough to say HEY BOYFRIEND I'M HERE.

He'd be taking a front row desk again. Yup. Front and center.
And once seated, he popped that humbug in his mouth. A professor that gave candy? Professor Hadley was well on her way to becoming his favorite. MHM.

Hadley beamed at all the students filing into her classroom. Most of them just seemed to give her the usual 'Good morning, Professor', to which she nodded back and replied back dutifully with a 'Good morning' of her own. Beaming when some of the new students even introduced themselves.
Once a fair amount of students appeared to take their seats and settle in, she pulled herself back up onto her desk. "Good morning, everyone," Fina said, offering a broad smile. "Welcome to another year of Arithmancy, for those who are returning students. And for those who this will be your first time, then a special welcome to you and of course, good luck. We'll start off simple, as move into introducing the topic that we're going to be spending most of the term studying."
"In your own words, what is Arithmancy?"

Minerva knew right away what her answer would be and put her hand up, "Professor, I feel arthimancy is telling your own future by the use of numbers and math. You find your paths, and fortune, and even love by ways of numbers found for your name and even birthday." She had been taking this class since her first year so Minerva really was starting to feel comfortable with most of it at least. She still wasn't the best at math, but it was coming with practice and if she just kept trying, she thought maybe it would be easy by seventh year. Well she was hopeful at least.

Vivi sat slumped a bit in her seat, taking in the chatter around her and mentally preparing for the need to sit still and FOCUS for the duration of class. Arithmancy was essentially maths, and while she was competent at it, she found it awfully hard to focus on classes where she had to sit still for long periods of time.
At least they started off with active participation, and Vivi raised her hand. "To me, if divination and Muggle mathematics got married and had a baby class, Arithmancy would be that baby. It's divination through the use of symbolic numbers."

What is Arithmancy, really?
..........
Cardigan had to think a little on that one. Well, she knew one thing: It was like Maths, for one thing, with all the numbers and such. That was really all she knew...
Darn.
She needed to study more!! Procrastination is NOT, always, the option!!! Well, she'd just have to put in all she knew about the subject, which was not a lot. Poo...
"Well......for one thing, it uses numbers, and is a lot like the muggle subject Maths, and you can find out a lot about yourself from it." Cadigan said, after raising her head. Sigh. She was never gonna get an OWL or NEWT in this subject!! It was probably very necessary for University or the Ministry of Magic. Any position would probably require an OWL/NEWT in Arithmancy!!! Though, at least it wasn't what she was planning on going to college for: she wanted, currently, to study Herbology, and then work in the Enviromental Protection department of the British ministry. That would be a dream come true!!!

Giving Logan one last smile before returning her gaze to Lewis, Kurumi was about to say something when class began and her attention was taken by Professor Hadley beginning the lesson. Moving her parchment in front of her and picking up her quill, she couldn't help but catch Lewis' gaze out of the corner of her eye before seriously pondering what Professor Hadley had asked.
Were they supposed to give a 'proper' definition? The seventh year found that easy enough to do, but it didn't really define the subject to her. "I've always felt that Arithmancy was something that helped put order to chaos. Explain chaos really through the universal language of numbers. A way of divining and making sense of the madness that can be the human spirit," Kurumi said after raising her hand. In a nut shell, Arithmancy was sort of perfection.

Ira just tried to focus on the class and the lesson that just started.
What is Arithmancy? Ira raised her hand up and answered the first thing that rolled in her mind, "In simple terms, it is divination by numbers." Which according to Ira was much better than divination through crystal balls and tea cups. Though that wasn't the complete description fitting Arithmancy subject. She continued, "But it is actually much more than that I feel.. We try to analyse the personality of the person too, and his behaviour, which together are taken in account to predict the.. the future."
And this reminded Ira that she needed to study. Like, really study the basics!
Minerva walked into class with a smile on her face. She wasn't really great at this subject, but her head of house and one of her favorite professors taught the class made it worth being at. She also was feeling good about her classes and being a little bit of a loner was proving to be beneficial with no drama around her at the moment. She smiled at Professor Hadley, "Hello Professor, hope you are doing well."
She then turned as she went into the room and smiled at a few people she knew already there, "Hi Oakey" she said as she walked to find a place to sit, then there was Ethan.. smile again, "Hey Ethan" Oh and there was Laura, "Hi Laura" she smiled as she found a seat near them and pulled out her book and parchment getting ready for class. Oh and there was candy, of course Min opened it and popped it in her mouth. Yes this was a good start to class. Then she realized two others were there, "Hey Alec, Hello Ella" she smiled at her housemates. It was great to see so many badgers in class.

But it was only Minnie and Laura, so all they got was EVIL!glares from her. She made her glare at Minnie meaner, though, since her feelings for Laura were weird right now. But still. HUffelpuffs...
She plopped down in a desk next to Ethan..."Hey, Ethan. I know you want to sit by me...so lucky for you!" she said with a smug smirk. She examined the peppermint on her desk..peppermints were okay. Better than chocolate or something...she undid the paper and popped it into her mouth.
Yuuum
Letting the mint melt on his tongue, Ethan looked up as he heard his name. He gave a smile and casual waggle of the fingers to Minerva before suddenly remembering what the board had said. Oh right... parchment and book... The fifth year pulled the required materials from his messenger bag then looked up again as someone took the seat next to him. "Must be my lucky day then..." he said, giving Elliot his own smirky grin. "Candy and graced by the presence of Miss Morganzo." Not sarcastic really, just fun.

And then the 15 year old turned his attention to the front because class, as it would seem, was now to begin. He thought over the question for a moment, then pondered his classmates answers. Grinning first at Vivi's analogy, Ethan raised his hand to expand on the subject slightly. "Arithmancy is the study of the magical properties of numbers... We can not only use them to predict the future but also learn about what paths to take to best ensure our personal successes."

Alice beamed back at Hadley as she tried to muster up an answer. What was Arithmancy? The class she was in currently. Duh.
The lioness sucked on the tip of her quill as she thought, twirling a tendril of her long caramel hair between her fingers. After finally conjuring up an answer, she raised her hand. "Professor, isn't Arithmancy.. numerology? Magical properties of numbers?" That was the best she could come up with. "The first portion of the word means numbers. I think." Her brow furrowed in thought. "The second part means divination. So, technically speaking, it's divination through numbers." Etymology came in handy.. sometimes. "But it's much more organized than divination, in my opinion. Very precise. Very orderly."
Okay. She was done now. She was just going to sit and listen to other better answers now.
And suck on her quill.

Good, they were starting off simple. Emmanuelle appreciated that she wasn't going to have to deal with numbers right off the bat, since, to be honest, the amount of math that went into Arithmancy had always kind of intimidated her. "Basically, it's Divination using numbers instead of tea leaves, crystal balls or dreams." she replied, barely managing to disguise how silly she sometimes found that other form of Divination. Would do to put down one class in a completely different one, after all.

What was Arithmancy. Jory raised his hand after some thought.
"Arithmancy is the combination of numbers and letters to figure out someone's life in the future,'' he said. "It's like using tea leaves and crystal balls in Divination.''
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
"Thank you Professor." Oakey said with a smile, hopefully he won't be to distracted today with how he was going to ask Hadley his question.
He turned back around and moved over to a desk that wasn't to far from where Ella and Minerva were sitting. He gave them a quick nod and removed his things from his bag setting them down in front of him.
He listened to Hadley's first question and answered. "Arithmancy is the study of numbers and their magical properties." Oakey started. "It's also can help predict the future in many different ways."

Arithmancy in his words...
Vickers paused for a moment, given that the description echoing in his head is the textbook version. Finally he raised his hand "Professor, Arithmancy is divination through numbers as well as the study of the magical properties of numbers." Still too bookish? Well thats just how it is to him.

Once Professor Hadley had returned her greeting, Kendall honestly had gone back to her sketch. At least she understood that, and it was better than just sitting staring off into space while she'd waited for the lesson to start. Although, she'd continued sketching even as the lecture had begun. She didn't need to pay attention when it was just 'welcome back's and 'good luck's, even if she felt she deserved both. She'd come back even though she didn't quite understand the subject, after all, and then, she didn't understand the subject. Explaining why she kept her focus on her sketch of Midir. She wasn't avoiding to listen, at least.
But finally, she decided to try to prove that she actually did care about the lesson, even if it bored her and confused her most of the time. At least Vivi's description had amused her, and she set her sketch in her lap as she raised her hand. "Arithmancy tells us that numbers have meaning. Other than just that 1 plus 1 equals 2 and that stuff. And some numbers're more magical than others," she said, sounding sure of herself even though she knew it wasn't as good of an answer as most of the others. And then she went back to her sketch. She could listen and sketch, after all, and now she proved she could participate and sketch too.

Well, she seemed genuinely pleased to see him! And his stomach did a little flip. One of her favorite first years?! He looked around, beaming. "I'm good! Can't wait for Arithmancy to start! It's what I've been most looking forward to, believe it or not." Probably because his aunt had gotten him interested in it from a young age. When you were related to someone like Josephina Hadley, it was hard NOT to like it. His little bubble of happiness deflated slightly as she introduced the man boy sitting next to her. "Yeah, I've seen him around. Hey, Lewis," he said shyly. This guy was clearly way too cool for him.

But then it was clear that class was about to begin. "Good morning, Professor!" he chirped happily. His cheeks flushed as he realized that no one else had replied. So she clearly wasn't looking for a whole class response, he realized belatedly. Just what he hadn't wanted. He was standing out. Pao lost her next few words in his embarrassment, but then struggled to bring his attention back to what she was saying.
Oh, I actually know this one! He was happy to finally be in a subject that he actually had some knowledge of. He could actually answer a question in this class rather than just sit there silently feeling dumb! His left hand shot into the air and he eagerly waited for eye contact.
"Arithmancy is a branch of magic, just like Charms or Transfiguration. But Arithmancy studies the meanings of numbers and how they impact our lives. It's like the scientific examination of numerical energies!" he finished, excited to finally start what he was sure would be his favorite class. Anything with math was sure to be fantastic.

Ella smirked when Hadley wished the new students good luck. The third year knew that Arithmancy could be overwhelming at first but really, it wasn't so bad. Besides, the badger found that Hadley made things relatively easy to understand so she figured the new students wouldn't have too hard a time. And hey, maybe Ella could help anyone who needed it. She really enjoyed helping people. Oh! And she also really enjoyed these peppermint things! They were delicious. BEAM.
What is Arithmancy? Ella considered this for a moment before raising her hand. "Professor, Arithmancy is the magical study of numbers and how they can be used to... to help predict things and reveal things about ourselves." Yup, sounded pretty legit, yeah?
