Hecate looked even worse for the wear. She was quite thin, and her breath could no longer be covered up with a mind. She was now taking a potion for it.
Still she was going to keep going in the way she knew. She wrote on the board "Truth Serums" and underlined it.
She returned at back of her desk and sat in her chair.
ooc: This class will stay open for at least 72 hours (probably more.) Also thanks to Nixy! and AuroraQuinn for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me, and to Anna Banana for making it into a pretty graphic!

Minerva looked back to the front of the room just in time to see the professor move and start the lesson. It was a quick start as well. What was truth serum, well that wasn't a hard question. Placing her hand in the air, "Professor, Truth Serum is a potion that makes someone tell the truth no matter what. You can not fight it and whatever is asked you automatically say the correct answer." she put her hand back down and listened to the others. Felling more and more nervous about this lesson. Not that she had anything to hide, but she didn't want to have to give this to anyone either. She would rather not know if someone was lying to her at this point in time.
Wha? Professor Lafay was always straight to the point! Sophie didn't have time to think much about anything and class was already starting! Well... that was good, right? It meant they'd get to the practical part soon. She hoped.
The third year shrugged and raised her hand. Truuuth Serum. That was kind of obvious, no? "It makes the drinker tell the truth." What else was there to say, really?

"Who can tell me what a Truth Serum does?" She asked very matter-of-fact.
Well he was kinda expecting she would decline, but the worry was still on his face. He's been around Healers and hospitals quite a few times thanks to his Uncle, and looking at Lafay's physical state-- she should be there, with minimal stress, getting better.
He sighed inwardly as he settled into his usual table and prepped his potions and lecture taking materials. At the close of the door he looked up. Class was starting.
He raised his hand at her question "Truth serums compel the person who takes it to answer questions truthfully.. hence the name. Although truth serums have varying degrees of effectivity. It is said that Veritaserum is the most potent truth serum."

Lafay returned his greeting and moved onto those of the others. Gideon unpacking his textbook and supplies as he waited for the class to be called to order to begin. Then his attention was returned to the front of the classroom, the Gryffindor unaware of the notice to his neighbor.
Aye...he knew what a truth serum did.
Truth serums made the drinker tell the truth, it was as simple as that. Sometimes forced upon them, otherwise taken on purpose to prove something. More specifically, its actual full effects varied by the actual potion being used in question. However Gideon remained quiet as his classmates voiced their knowledge or own opinions of the matter. The seventh year simply nodding in answer to show understanding of the topic at hand.

Vivi gave Gideon a sideways look and a matching smile as he seated himself, but she didn't opt to greet him. Impulse control and toeing the line, those were her watchwords today. That and being so incredibly awesome that she blew Lafay's proverbial socks off.
At the first question, she calmly raised her hand. "The more powerful truth serums are restricted by the Ministry because they effectively strip a person of their will and force them to answer questions regardless." She paused, a look of consternation crossing her face. They were making truth serum, which relied on jobberknoll feathers... and all the jobberknolls were murdered. It seemed like it was way too soon to be taking advantage of the CoMC tragedy.

She smiled as the lesson officially began with the first question. "A Truth Serum is a potion that can be used to gain any truth from anybody." Didn't truth serums need Jobernoll feathers...Weren't all the ones at Hogwarts murdered, hmmm maybe it was Professor Lafay, nah even Professor Lafay wasn't that evil! The thought almost made Nerida giggle.
Smirk.. Smirk What was that smirk for. She saw that smirk lafay.. She glanced back Richard wondering if he saw it too. maybe they were out to get her :o maybe they were going to force her to drink the potion and stand in front of the room and answer anything :O
Calm Down, Logan. your thinking too much of this. no one is out to get you and everything was going to be fine.. the smirk was nothing.. nooothing.. right?her eyes darted around the room for a moment before the professor started the lesson
what was a truth serum.. well it was obvious right. whoever didnt know what it was just by it's name alone well. they needed to spend more time hitting the books. as everyone gave the answers before she could she began doodling lines on anther piece of parchment she had laying under the one she titled for class

A simple greeting and a nod from the woman. Not too bad. That, at least lessened her concern about the Potions Mistress' health status. Yes, she was worried. Professor Lafay was their teacher, after all.
Not too long after she'd taken a seat, the Slytherin Quidditch Captain settled beside her. She eyed him for a moment and her heart seemed to skip a beat. Just once, mind you. "She's getting worst." Beezus whispered to Dylan. That seemed like an understatement but she didn't add anymore after hearing what the Professor had to say to Kurumi and Lewis who were murmuring. Nope. She didn't want to catch the woman's attention with talking to the Slytherin beside her.
When everyone was finally inside, the Ravenclaw turned her attention to the Potions Mistress.
Truth Serums.
Hand in the air, she said, "A truth serum is a special potion that forces the drinker to tell the truth and reveal their deepest secrets." It was definitely not a potion to mess with.

When Professor Lafay had nodded back towards Violet, she gave her a soft smile. How strong she was, after what she's been unfortunately going through recently. And for that, Violet couldn't help but admire her for it.
The next thing she knew class had begun and Professor Lafay had asked the class if they knew what a Truth Serum was. Almost without hesitation Violet raised her hand calmly and said politely,"The truth serum potion is said to be used to gain the truth from anyone.."
Not long after saying that, Violet slowly but surely began to think in her mind, wondering what Professor Lafay had planned for this particular potion today, obviously aside from the fact that it was the main part of their lesson. But what they'd be using it for...
..And Violet wasn't getting the best idea thus far..

Elise looked up when Professor Lafay addressed the class. Everyone had filed in quicker than normal. Or was that just her? Whatever it was, the child noticed the writing on the board for the first time that day. Truth Serums. It sounded terrifying, and hopefully Elise'd never have to use it on anyone.
Raising her hand, she smiled. Easy question. "It forces the drinker to tell what the drinker believes is the truth. But it can be overpowered by Occlumency. So it's best used on the unsuspecting." Just because she didn't like the potion didn't mean she hadn't done her research.
"Who can tell me what a Truth Serum does?" She asked very matter-of-fact.
Angelina raised her hand, after a short thought of what Truth Serum is. "Professor, Truth Serum is a potion someone drinks and they will he forced to tell the truth to any question asked to them. They have no choice but to tell the truth," She answered to Professor Lafay.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daichi didn't like seeing his Head of house so ...weak. He was used to the fierce and somewhat scary personality. But now she didn't even take away points when one of the students didn't greet her. But it seemed like he was wrong and soon he heard the points loss from... Daichi looked at the girl's robe and groaned. Slytherin...great!
Still, he was keeping his thoughts to himself so when class officially begun he listened to the first question. What does truth serum do? The Slytherin's hand went up in the air "It is a potion that if the drinker drinks it he or she can't help but tell the truth to anything that is being asked to them" He still hoped they weren't going to *test* it.
Carigan smiled, she thought she could get this one just by the name. "A truth serum is a potion where, when ingested, the subject is only able to tell the truth. No matter how much the subject wants to lie they can't."

Duh.
What would a truth serum do? Obviously, someone in the wrong mind would say it creates lies. But a truth serum could make you say the most weirdest things you know. Your thoughts, for example, a unicorn. Well. Enough with that.
"A Truth Serum is a potion that when taken by a person, will let the person speak the truth and can be rather informative," Kat said. "Veritaserum is known as the most powerful Truth Serum and because it is powerful, the Ministry of Magic had restricted the use of them."
Shut up, Hudson.

What was truth serum? Well there was the chemical that muggles used in interrogation with suspects but Orr felt certain that magical truth serum did much more than that.
Orr put up her hand and waited for Professor Lafay to call on her before saying. "Well, Professor. I don't know about magical truth serums but I do know that muggles use a chemical compound that when administered to a person will cause them to unwittingly tell the truth about anything. So I'm assuming that magical truth serums do the same?"

Truth serums. What about truth serums other than the potions ability to let the drinker tell EVERYTHING that anyone or everyone wants to know.
Juliet shot her hand high enough to let Lafay see, "Veritaserum.... professor" she spoke "With just three drops of the powerful truth serum, anything you want to know about can be revealed" is this what they're going to make? Veritaserum??? That'd be cool!!!!

Truth Serums... Jory thought of his answer before raising his hand. "Truth Serums are a potion which when administered to someone causes them to tell the truth about something when asked.'' Veritaserum was a perfect example.

Starting off easy! That was always a good thing. She always debated on saying the same answers as somebody else but there really wasn't another way to answer. Plus she didn't want to not answer and then get yelled at for not paying attention or something. Stop over thinking it Hannah...it's really not that big of a deal.
She raised her hand. "Professor it makes the drinker tell the truth." Point blank. She didn't like beating around the bush.

Mordred grinned at the woman when he was acknowledged and continued to read his book as they waited for more students to arrive. He was so into reading the "Veritaserum" chapter in their Potions book that he did not realize that the lesson already started. He looked up just in time to see the last student take her seat and immediately closed his book as Lafay asked her first question.
So what does a Truth Serum do? The boy listened to what the others had to say and raised his hand. “A truth serum makes the drinker answer questions handed to them openly…” and what exactly makes it unique? “…almost without hesitation.” He continued and placed down his hand with a faint grin.

Belle was glad the professor was doing well. Then she heard the professor ask a question. Hmm...what does truth serum do? She shuffled her hands to try to get them warm.
Belle raised her hand when she had her answer, "Professor i think truth serum is supposed to reveal your darkest secrets you never wish to tell. I have also heard that a teacher using it on a student is forbidden."
Wasn't it fairly obvious what the truth serum does? SHe raised her hand, clearing her throat, and said, "Well the truth serum makes that just happen: The drinker will answer any questions truthfully and immediately." Wasn't that hard...
Now making it...was probably another story altogether.

Sarah was still rather nervous about the jobberknolls yet she raised her hand to answer the question and said "It makes the drinker tell only the truth and nothing but the truth. Under a truth serum ones deepest, darkest secrets can come out" Sarah shuddered at the thought. What if people found out that...
"Hello Miss Wheeler" She said narrowing her eyes at her and then turned to the class closing the door to the room.
"Who can tell me what a Truth Serum does?" She asked very matter-of-fact.
OH! Of course, Mrs Nasty Head of House didn't like her or whatever she did. Couldn't stand her being a tattletail... well deal with it, Lex was more important than the silly girl, and didn't like how bad she was at spells and stuff. WELL SERI HAD BEEN PRACTICING. And she was gonna make a real potion today.
Wait... Truth Serum?
Seri hardly ever told the exact and right truth, it was mostly... a little off. A white lie here and there never hurt anybody right? They couldn't test it out on students could they? Please say no! Please no! PLEASE. Anything but that. She realised when Lafay shut the door, she had shut out the hope of escaping. Now, let Seri think, what excuses did she have? She could pull the not feeling well... or say she needed to go to the bathroom right? Seri would wait for later...
"Just a guess Professor, but I think it just could, possibly only a small chance of this being right but... Make someone tell the truth?" Seri smirked. Wasn't it obvious? "Obviously it would be illegal to use on school children and underage wizards..." Seri said, praying she wouldn't be corrected.

She ended up uncharacteristically pausing here to venture a glance at the Slytherin and offered a small smile. "Hey...Sierra," she said before moving along to her usual seat and setting her bag on the ground.
She offered Professor Lafay a weak smile and a small bow before she took her seat and took a look at the board. Truth Serums....this was...going to be a theoretical lesson maybe? Yes? Only bad things could come from a homework assignment based on this...possibly worse than the Polyjuice Potion and Kurumi really...REALLY did not want to have anything that resemble a repeat of that.
Sierra had just been about to say something to Kurumi when the lesson officially started. She glanced up at the professor for a second, and then she looked back at Kurumi. She gave her new somewhat-friend a little nod then turned back to the front of the room.

She caught that smile, and it somewhat pained her to see it. Nevertheless, she found a small comfort in seeing it, too, so she returned it with a rather weak smile of her own. Smiles weren't easy to come by now-a-days, and Sierra found herself sometimes smiling but with no real emotion behind it. Her smiles never quite reached her eyes anymore.
She sighed and raised her hand. "It's a potion that gives you the upper hand on another person," she said. "You can get them to reveal truths they normally wouldn't, therefore you can either benefit from their own ideas or protect yourself or others from their thoughts and ideas." A truth serum, yeah.
