Similar to the Magical Creatures Sanctuary, the barnyard is an enclosure that contains a variety of creatures scattered about, mostly ones that need to be kept inside during the winter. In the spring and fall, many of these creatures will be allowed out into the Sanctuary where students can continue looking after them.
If you're feeling useful, pick up a shovel from the rack at the back of the barn and scoop up some animal poo! There's a nice manure pile just outside the barn's back doors. If you're feeling lonely, go visit with an abraxan, aethonan, or a granian, although the barn currently only contains one of each. If you're feeling sad, go visit with the somber thestrals, provided that you can see them. Who knows, your skills around these animals might just result earn you a few house points.
At the extreme back of the barn, in what used to be an old stall with no door and what is now a converted fireplace, lies one very shiny, very large egg-like object. The object seems to be giving off an incredible amount of heat and occasionally quivers to and fro as the flames from the fireplace lick its sides. What is it, you wonder? Just as you start to take a step closer to examine what you think is an egg, the professor pops up out of nowhere and shoos you out of the barn.
The time for this object is not yet, but soon enough, the barn might just have a new inhabitant.
All animals within this enclosure (with the exception of one) are rated X, XX, or XXX. Some animals reside in stalls, others are in coops or cubbies, and some are just regular mundane barn creatures. Please remember your character's skill level, year, and familiarity around animals when visiting the Barnyard.

Leaving the aurgurey to its meal, Gideon stepped away from it and its nest and moved on to check on some of the other inhabitants of the barn's loft. The fwooper, thankfully properly silenced was one of them as mentioned on the list of creatures though it was easy enough to notice and reconize. The large multi-colored bird was seemingly asleep however so the prefect passed it on not wishing to disturb it. He then came upon a nesting of jobberknolls, a creature he was more familiar with as a source of potions ingrediants then anything else.
Good for memory potions if he remembered correctly.
The sixth year couldn't help but look around and sure enough there were some feathers lying around. Gideon paused for a moment before collecting them, carefully placing them in his pocket to either be used himself or to pass on to Professor Lafay. There was no sense letting them simply lay around and be trampled on by others. The tiny blue birds themselves seemed to be trying to decide if he was friend or foe, some minding their own business while others were cautious of his presence. "Nothing to be afraid of..." he assured him, slipping his gloves off and getting some seed from a nearby container. "Here ye go," Gideon added crouching down to not be so threatening and offering up the food for a peace offering.

Nerida had patched up the hole and had went to go see what other animals she could help. As she walked past the salamanders' fire she saw that it was low. Didn't she just see Alyssa adding more fire a couple days ago. Hmm, unholstering her wand she pointed it at the fire after she made sure no salamanders were close buy she would hate to hurt one of the creatures. "Incendio." Like Aguamenti the element shot from her wand towards the object. After the fire had doubled in size Nerida said "Finite," the fire stopped. Nerida went and grabbed some food for the salamanders and set it down around the fire. It seemed as soon as she did, the salamanders came running for the food. Walking backwards to let the salamanders eat, she fell into a bucket. This made her fall onto the floor.

I'll carry it." because you know, its a bag of STUFF "Thanks, for helping out though." He appreciated it he did.
He chuckled at the mention of Roro "I cant imagine dragons to clean up after themselves in the wild" he puased for a moment as he looked out of the barn towards the forest and beyond "Williamson better knows what he's doing if he wants to reintroduce Roro to the wild. Survival rate for hand-reared animals going back to the wild isnt as great as papers make it appear." Sad truth really.
He watched her feed the thestral, again just amazed at how easily she deals with the creatures. Then she mentioned about they who are misunderstood. Those icy blues shifts away again "Well... they're just gonna have to carry on won't they? Just being who they are... or prove everybody wrong. Just like these creatures." he said as he finally returned his gaze to her and gave her a small smile.
It took a moment to process what Kurumi just said. This term.... Events of the past term, how she looked, how she behaved, all the way to their talk in Herbology... it all started to make sense to him now, seeing the complete picture. He felt a new stab of pain-- for her. Her trials and tribulations and the kind of future he has been living for a while now. They say it will get better. It never really does. You just get used to the pain. He bit his lip and shook his head. No that is not something to say to Kurumi right now. Or ever.
He caught her question at the last second "Since the carriage ride here. I didnt think it was such a big deal until I hear people not being able to see them at all." People like her. Which kinda placed things in a different perspective for him, actually having a friend and telling him nothing's there.
As Kurumi continued to feed them he took the Thestral's feeding pan and emptied the bucket's contents into it. He was just cleaning up the bucket when he saw the other Gryffindor Prefect walk in, raising his head up to acknowledge the other lad's greeting.
He put the cleaning supplies away and carried the bag of stuff in his hand. "Lets go give Professor Bentley her present shall we?" he smiled, shaking the bag a bit as he angled his head towards the greenhouses.
Kurumi eyed the bag for a moment and then looked back at Vickers. Well, if he was sure that he could handle it then she wouldn't try to force help on him, but she somehow got the feeling that somewhere between here and Professor Bentley's office his arms were going to get tired. It was a rather large garbage bag after all.
But enough about dragon dung.
Kurumi frowned slightly at Vickers' next comment, the one about Roro being returned to the wild and only half way heard the rest of what he had to say about the success rate. Somewhere in the back of Kurumi(s still naive mind she had thought that perhaps Hogwarts would have its own dragon...like...forever. But that seemed less and less likely of a possibility now that she got to think about it. It was just too...dangerous. "I always thought that maybe Roro would just go live on a colony...or stay at Hogwarts." Kurumi wasn't sure she liked the idea of reintroducing Roro to the wild...especially with what she knew about survival rates that Vickers had only confirmed in his speech.
While the thestral gnawed on the piece of meat in her one hand, Kurumi slowly lifted her other hand and used the back of it to brush the bridge of its nose gently. She couldn't really describe what it felt like, other than it was like nothing she had touch before and it almost made her smile. She looked over her shoulder, tucking some of her hair behind her ear as he spoke, and the color rose in her cheeks just a little. "Yeah...I guess we will," she replied as she returned his smile and even reached out for his hand to give it a gently squeeze. While Vickers may have been referring more to the actual creatures, his words meant so much more than that to her.
It felt oddly nice, having another friend to be able to talk about thestrals with and Kurumi's attention briefly returned to it as she brushed its nose again with her hand. Selina could see them and so could Lewis, both were people Kurumi could confide in about anything and everything and it was sort of nice to think that perhaps Vickers could join that group of tight knit friends as well. "I'm sorry for your loss," she said softly, turning her violet gaze towards him as she gave the thestral's nose one last pat.
Just then Gideon walked in and Kurumi's attention was momentarily taken from Vickers to her fellow Gryffindor and she returned a soft smile in his direction. It was sort of awkward, considering the conversation her and Vickers had just been having - one that was deeply personal - but it was still a smile.
"Oh, right," Kurumi nodded. All this talk about thestrals had made her forget about the large bag of dragon dung Vickers was carrying. The thestral had finished gnawing on the piece of meat she had fed it and Kurumi waved her wand to clean her hand. "Let's go."
