Default Muggle Studies Lesson #1-Muggle Literature and Authors Introduction

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When you walk into the Muggle Studies classroom, you instantly notice that there are books suspended in the air above you. Don't worry these are just for decorations and to get you into the mood of the lesson theme for the year.

SPOILER!!: The Ceiling

The desks have been replaced with special L shaped chairs that have been charmed to be extra comfy when you sit down. There is a big sparkly blue one at the front of the class that the Professor is sitting/rocking in as everyone comes into the classroom. She has her usual welcoming smile on her face and she is dressed in her favorite pair of blue pajamas and big fluffy house shoes.

SPOILER!!: The chairs

In normal Muggle Studies and Cerulean style, there is a goodies and drink table near the front of the room. It has been charmed to keep everything refilled and ready to rock. On the table, you can find plastic bowls and napkins, a popcorn bar filled with a variety of flavors, and different Muggle drinks in plastic bottles. The drinks are Coke, Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Tea, Sweet Tea, Red Gatorade, and Water. The popcorn comes in the following flavors: Buttery, Caramel, Chicago Style, Rainbow Flavored, Extra Cheese, and Garlic.

SPOILER!!: Popcorn Bar

Please help yourself to the goodies and drinks and have a seat. Get comfy and feel free to talk among yourself until the class starts.

OOC: Please sit down and grab something to drink and eat. Professor Cerulean is already in her chair eating some popcorn and waiting for everyone to arrive. The class will officially start later on tonite about 9:30ish pm CST. Thanks!

Hannah had no idea who the chick was in the portrait. Atleast the professor realized that not everybody knows about the muggle world. Hannah was on of those people. She wasn't too sure about wizarding poet's either truth be told.

She tried to think hard about what she had heard other students talk about because she was drawing a complete blank. This something finally rand a bell. With a raised hand she responded with "Professor there's Edith Nesbit. He was a children's author." She had no idea who this person was and hoped that the professor didn't ask her. She merely heard some firsties talking about some book by that name.

Emmanuelle was absolutely clueless about poetry. It was just not something that interested her. In fact, she found it down right boring. So, she just listened while her classmates (one who must of not been paying attention at all and named someone who had already been covered) listed other famous poets. While she listened she munched on her popcorn (which was, surprisingly, still half full).
Then, an idea popped into her head. Songwriters could be considered poets of a sort, right?
So, she raised her hand answered, "John Lennon."

So Lily had been really quiet during this lesson, simply because she only knew about Dr. Seuss. The others weren't exactly the easiest to figure out. But she had been listening. So now it seemed like class would be ending soon, so it was time to speak up... though she wasn't quite sure of a poet to talk about. There was someone close to a poet... So Lily raised her hand to answer anyway. "Tommy DePaola was kinda a poet... he wrote children's stories but some of them rhymed like a poem." Hopefully that would be acceptable as an answer...

"That's Stepheen King. My older brother loves his novels and almost never stops talking about him and his novels. One of his favorites is The Shining. From Webster I know of that novel I find it strange and suspenseful, not really my thing.", Oichi responded with her hand raised high.

Alyssa thought of some of the famous poets she had heard of and remembered one in particular. She raised her hand and said,"Professor there's a famous poet and she was Elizabeth Barrett Browning. She wrote a beautiful love poem to her husband, that said "How do I love thee, Let me count the ways."

Violet had no idea who the last person in the portrait was so she stayed silent for a while as the other people in the class responded, but then she wanted to participate in the discussion as well and raised up her hand shyly. "Um..professor. I do not know who this person is, but I do like poetry."

Messer had NO idea who's in that portrait. He never really like poetry because the language its too complicated to him. Why can't they just say what they need to say and be done with it? Its more simple and easy to understand, no? So this time he just sat there listened to other students answering the question. Maybe he should taking some notes. Yes, notes.

Kurumi continued to jot down some notes as Professor Cerulean went on a little about the next portrait. She had heard of the name, mostly from her father, but wasn't too familiar with her works. At least this author she would be able to go to the library and check out some of her books, right?

When they were asked about their favorite poets, Kurumi again wondered if this would be more than just sharing of names or if Professor Cerulean would elaborate on any of them. The one that came to Kurumi's mind was rather...old compared to those that people were mentioning. He was someone that her mother had really enjoyed and she had often made Kurumi and her brothers memorize his haiku during the holidays. "A poet that I am familiar with is Matsuo Basho." Kurumi had actually been to visit his famous House of the Fallen Persimmons in Kyoto and was amazed to see that the stones where he had hand carved his haiku into were still present in the surrounding garden.

She was raised in a family that embraced the Muggle world and had never fully understood some wizarding families cutting their children off from the Muggle world. Even if you didn't support the Muggle world, you should still teach them about the other world just because. She glanced at the students again....and one of them was the Minister's daughter...how odd that he hadn't educated her a little bit more in Muggle affairs. Finally she said, "O no worries. That's why Muggle Studies is still a class for those that aren't familiar with the ways of the Muggle World. We can learn so much from their past, present, and future endeavors that could help the Wizarding World as well. If you will just take good notes, I will give you credit through your home work assignments." she said encouragingly to the two students.

The professor focused back on the portrait and the movies and novels the students were throwing out there, "All very good examples. This man is known as the Father of Horror and has created some pretty frightening imagery in his works. He is truly a pioneer in his field. His works continue to be used for inspiration in a variety of movies and other literature creations. " she said feeling a little shiver sneak down her spine as she thought about one of the movies mentioned. It was not her idea of a fun time...there was just something about clowns that freaked her out.

"Okay, now onto our last author of the day. Remember there are tons of amazing authors in Muggle history but I just chose a few to focus on. I wanted to throw in a woman author in to the mix." she said as she walked towards the last portrait, "This lady is known for her poems. She is the author of over 250 various poems and was an inspiration for women during the nineteenth century." she flicked on the light of the portrait."

There may not be many of you that recognize her, but this Emily Dickson." she said glancing at the portrait. "One of my favorite lines of hers is 'Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all.'"

She walked back to her chair and sat down grabbing a quick drink, "Can anyone else share a famous poet, either Muggle or Wizard?" she asked hoping this would also encourage those that weren't familiar with the Muggle World.

Oh so that was Emily Dickinson. Vickers heard of her, but admittedly never seen a good enough image of her so the portrait really helped.

Now any poets he knew that wasnt necessarily Muggle? He knew of a few, poems not really being his type of literature but anyway up goes his hand "Professor, there's Ingolfr the Iambic, who wrote a rather apt poem about Quidditch."

Anya thought about the question on poets for a second. "I've heard of one book." she said after raising her hand. "It was called something like 'Sonnets for a Sorcerer'... or 'Sonnets of a Sorcerer'... or something. It was on some banned list or something." she said waving her hand dismissively. "I'm guessing that was a magical poem book though..." And she was guessing that since it was on some Do Not Read list that is was famous for the wrong reasons.

She was also getting the feeling that she stopped making sense a little while ago. She'd just... uh... stop talking now. And so she occupied herself with more popcorn and drink unsure if she even answered the Professor's question at all.

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jory racked his brain for a poet before he raised his hand. "There's Susan Rich ,'' he said hoping the had remembered and said the name correctly. He'd briefly come across her when he was studying poems at his Muggle school.

Mika glanced at the portait of Dickinson and just let out a little hmph sound. She hadn't known Emily Dickinson looked like that - she had thought someone whose words were so beautiful wouldn't have any looks of their own. She knew her sister wasn't good looking and she could write.

So she assumed that was the case with everyone. Guess she was wrong...or she just didn't like her sister.

"There's the poet William Carols Williams...he did a poem I liked called 'To a Friend Concerning Several Ladies' its a little strange of a poem but I like it none the less...but I really like his poem Libertad! Igualdad! Fraternidad! because the title sounds...interesting strange even" yeah maybe she was strange. Well everyone knew she was right? She was a Johanson for goodness sake!

Up to now, Jonathan has manage to answer William Shakespeare, the author seems to be worldwide famous within the muggle and wizarding world. As Professor Cerulean showed them the last poster, Jonathan's eyes somehow narrowed as his head slightly moved forward... the person is not familiar to him but when the professor said the author's name, Jonathan's eyes widened. That name... is very much familiar to him.

Emily Dickson... Emily Dickson... Where, oh, where has he have heard this name before. If it wasn't Ryu, it's definitely Jeanne. Those are the only two who can't stop talking when it came to their fascination to books. She seems familiar to Jonathan but he couldn't really put his finger on it though.

Can anyone else share a famous poet, either Muggle or Wizard?

Wizard poet? Jonathan knows a few. His hand raised to answer "Percival Pratt, he's a wizard poet" in case someone asks if he's muggle or not, but clearly, he seems to be quite famous in the wizarding history. For one, he has a portrait near the staircase. How can students not know him?

two sides of the same coin

Desiree hadn't recognized Emily Dickinson either, but that was ok. At least the Professor realized a lot of people hadn't been exposed to muggle authors, like her. But as she thought about the next question, she realized that she couldn't think of any wizard poets either..

She could only think of one thing to say, but didn't want to say it because she felt like everyone would laugh at her, or she would just seem dumb.. But she slowly raised her hand anyway
"Professor, I know this might sound.. strange, and it's not exactly a person.. but I think that the sorting hat should be considered a poet, because every year it creates it's new song to start off the year. The songs almost always rhyme, and are set up in the same structure as poems"

Ok you can stop rambling now, Desiree. She was pretty sure that was one of the worst answers ever, the professor asks for the name of a poet, she says a hat. But at the same time, she wasn't wrong. The hat did create poetry. It thought of them itself.

Emily Dickson? Heh, she didn't know her either.

But, as professor Cerulean asked her next question... Nora's face almost fell. Almost. She couldn't really answer this either, even if it involved wizard literature. Poetry, to be exact. Well, she was more of a novel girl, rather than poetry, which she didn't really like. Grrr.

Take notes. Yup, that was the best thing she could do.

Oh my God, THAT was what Emili Dickinson looked like?

Michelle's jaw fell. She was a huge fan of poetry. Somehow, everything was so much easier to express through poems. And Emily Dickinson was one of her favourite poets.

"Professor, there's Rainer Marie Rilke, who is my favourite poet. He was one of the finest poets in German language. He once wrote, 'No great art has ever been made without the artist having known danger.' Also, I simply love Romantic poets, such as John Keats and P. B. Shelley."

And Zack was here again knowing nothing about the author. This made him feel that this was the most important reason why he needed to take more muggle classes. He just didn't know anything about muggle world. He looked at the last portrait as the professor introduced her. She was the first female author professor and introduced them. Zack looked at her carefully to see if he knew her by any chance. But no as much as he tried to remember his head was starting to more. So he thought to just listen.

Professor asked them to name any poet they knew. Yeah this was something he could answer. He raised his hand and said "Professor, one of the poet I know is Ingolfr the Iambic. He sometime ago wrote a poetry for the quiddtich." which the lines he couldn't t remember at the moment. So he didn't think of mentioning the lines.

Prudence knew this one, being born in England but raised mostly in Australia she'd been taught one poem that she could say off the top of her head. "Another famous poet is a muggle who was called Dorothea Mackellar, famous for the Poem 'My Country' about Australia" she said with a smile. That was definitely one of her favourites!

Rubbing the back of his neck, Dylan eyed the portrait. The lady didn't look at all familiar to him...but then the Professor was offering her name...and the name was certainly a famous one. Especially in the muggle world.

...Her name...It kinda reminded him of Charles Dickens.

Not really having much to add where the lady was concerned, there was an author that did happen to be his favorite. It might appear a bit childish to others...but Dylan cared not. Raising his hand..."Shel Silverstein, miss. He did a few books of his unique version of poetry and his own artwork, which is awesome. My favorite is most definitely 'Where The Sidewalk Ends...'"

"Boa Constrictor" was his absolute favorite poem...

Selina smiled as the Professor opened up the conversation to something that Selina knew well- the wizarding world. As much as she was interested in the literature that Cerulean brought up, she was lost. There was only so much that notes could do. So when she asked about wizard poets Selina rose her hand and said, "My mum and I really like Richard Edgar Wallace!" He was an awesome wizard author.

Stuck inside with Sirius | *Splish-Splash* | bamBAM | ☁ Spooktacular ☁

Spike was clueless about these authors. In fact, he was clueless about most books, and so had spent the last however long tracing his finger along the seams of his chair.

Unusually, he perked up at the question about poems. Probably because there was one lone epic poetry book on his shelf at home, Making Friends with Frankenstein. He raised his hand. "Colin McNaughton was a muggle author," Spike said with a crooked smile. "He writes wickedly fun poems especially for kids with really cool illustrations too." And maybe teens, considering Spike still loved that book. "It's all about monsters and cool stuff...like the Ogre's song, where the ogre says 'An wen I needs a midnite snack, Heer them hewmin bones go CRACK! CRACK, CRACK, midnite snack, Heer them hewmin bones go CRACK!"

GRIN.

Hmm, Kimalia couldn't help but stare the portrait of Emily Dickson, she felt like she met her before.. Well, not literally, just someone she knew who resembled her strongly. Hmm... hmm.. she couldn't but think about it.

Maybe she will remember that later.. So, Kimalia instead rose her hand, "There's also Edgar Allan Poe, my father enjoys reading his stuff." She tried reading his works, but some stuff was too spooky and weird for her to enjoy.

Gryffinclaw-Ravendor • The REAL Hermione Granger

"I used to like Emily Dickinson, until I found out her life story. Poor thing, a old spinster sho loved seclusion and just living with nature. Just depressing... Then I decided to find another Poet to favour, and I am yet to find one. Yet I liked Phenomenal Woman by Maya Angelou. I never heard of her before I read her poem. I do like humourous and satirical poems. I loved this poem as it just didn't make sence. I know not the poet though.

SPOILER!!: poem
Dear Ladies and Jellyspoons

I come before you
to stand behind you
And tell you something
I know nothing about

Next Thursday,
which is the day after Friday,
there will be a ladies meeting,
for men only.

Wear your best clothes
if you haven't any,
and if you can come,
please stay at home.

Admission's free
pay at the door.
Take a seat
and sit on the floor.

It makes no difference
where you sit
The kid in the gallery's
sure to spit.

You see. This is very lighthearted."
Sarah said. She really did want to find the author.

She looked at the two students that had brought up their concerns about not knowing any of the authors and thought about it for a minute. Se hadn't really thought about that.

SPOILER!!: Final Portrait

There may not be many of you that recognize her, but this Emily Dickson." she said glancing at the portrait. "One of my favorite lines of hers is 'Hope is the thing with feathers, that perches in the soul, and sings the tune without words, and never stops at all.'"

She walked back to her chair and sat down grabbing a quick drink, "Can anyone else share a famous poet, either Muggle or Wizard?" she asked hoping this would also encourage those that weren't familiar with the Muggle World.

Arghhhh...another portrait. Another unknown person. Sierra would go and talk to her parents about this lack of knowledge she had of Muggles, but... A) They'd make her check out some books from the library and start reading regularly, and B) Did she really care to know more about Muggles? She knew what she needed to know, but she didn't see herself living in the Muggle world anytime soon. As a matter of fact, she planned to live in Hogsmeade, like her parents, and wasn't that the only wizarding villiage in Great Britain? So see, she was covered as far as what she needed to know.

What about OWLS, though?!

...gulp. Realizing that little mistake in judgment, Sierra starting glancing around the room. What were the others saying?! "Emily Dickinson?" she suggested, her hand raised. Err...yeah, whatever they said. Then they were allowed to suggest a famous poet, Muggle or Wizard. Whew. They were back to magic... "Ingolfr the Iambic," she said, raising her hand again. "He wrote about Quidditch..." Which would be why she knew his name right off the bat.

Jacques recognised many of the poets they were mentioning however he did not like poetry too much. They preferred to use figurative language instead of being straight forward and when they were being straight forward people analysed things that weren't there. This was also a problem he found with regular pieces of literature, they couldn't just be, there always had to be something extra attached to them. That was the appeal of such things too, the weirder they were the more recognisable. Like the two dead boys poem. Utter baloney but everyone knew it, could anyone analyse it though? No, he didn't think so. Maybe someone had done so but he felt it was purposely a nonsense poem so people couldn't analyse it. Maybe the writer, who's remained anonymous felt the need to mess with everyones head.

Jacques raised his hand, though he was usually shy to speak because of his speech, he liked the topic at hand. "Ivan Khemnitser," His voice was nasally due to the impediment caused by his deafness, "He wrote a poem cawled, The Lion's Council of State." She had simply asked for the poet but he went ahead and gave her the name of the specific poem he was speaking of. He went ahead and dropped his hand again then leaned back in his chair.
