Muggle Studies Lesson #1-Muggle Literature and Authors Introduction
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When you walk into the Muggle Studies classroom, you instantly notice that there are books suspended in the air above you. Don't worry these are just for decorations and to get you into the mood of the lesson theme for the year.
SPOILER!!: The Ceiling
The desks have been replaced with special L shaped chairs that have been charmed to be extra comfy when you sit down. There is a big sparkly blue one at the front of the class that the Professor is sitting/rocking in as everyone comes into the classroom. She has her usual welcoming smile on her face and she is dressed in her favorite pair of blue pajamas and big fluffy house shoes.
SPOILER!!: The chairs
In normal Muggle Studies and Cerulean style, there is a goodies and drink table near the front of the room. It has been charmed to keep everything refilled and ready to rock. On the table, you can find plastic bowls and napkins, a popcorn bar filled with a variety of flavors, and different Muggle drinks in plastic bottles. The drinks are Coke, Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Tea, Sweet Tea, Red Gatorade, and Water. The popcorn comes in the following flavors: Buttery, Caramel, Chicago Style, Rainbow Flavored, Extra Cheese, and Garlic.
SPOILER!!: Popcorn Bar
Please help yourself to the goodies and drinks and have a seat. Get comfy and feel free to talk among yourself until the class starts.
OOC: Please sit down and grab something to drink and eat. Professor Cerulean is already in her chair eating some popcorn and waiting for everyone to arrive. The class will officially start later on tonite about 9:30ish pm CST. Thanks!

As the conversation revolving around Shakespeare came to a close, Kurumi found herself furrowing her brow and sort of squinting at the next portrait that appeared in front of them. Nope...she did not recognize this man nor the name after several people had answered. Dr. Suess? Kurumi cocked her head to the side again and rubbed the back of her neck. She may have heard the name before, but she was rather unfamiliar with his work and, from the sound of it, he wrote children's books. Those sort of things had never really been allowed in her home growing up due to her mother attempting to stop all references to magic - no matter how small.
Not having her own answer, Kurumi stuck with writing down notes and a few of the quotes people had said. She especially liked the one Messer had shared - partly because she was a rather small individual herself.

As the next portrait showed up, Dale looked to it in even more confusion. That man did NOT look familiar at all. He stared at everyone else who seemed to be saying things that sounded like 'Sooss'. And... and green eggs? Green HAM? That was dangerous. Dale would never eat that... in fact, the thought was making him feel a little queasy...
So... Dale kept quiet at this one. He was now lost.

A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
How did these people KNOW these things? Daichi stared in awe at the students in the class that answered the questions before looking at the portrait of that shake guy when another portrait came in view.
Again, the boy was lost as he scratched the back of his non-itchy neck. The more he looked at the man in the portrait the more his thoughts trailed away and towards the duck pond. Mweh he'd rather play with Floppy than guess who that man was.
Seriously, who is he? Maybe he should just take notes? yeah... Grabbing his fwooper quill he wrote on a piece of parchment but soon found out that the things he wrote were more little doodles than actual notes.

At first glance at the picture Hannah was not sure who that man was. Afterall the stories that were read to her and her siblings at home were not muggle related at all. She heard several students say it was Dr. Seuss and that rang a bell.
She heard other kids talking about him once. "Professor that's Dr. Seuss and one of his lines are “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” She was surprised she actually had an answer for this.
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."
Adam had been writing down what the Professor had been saying as well as everyone's thoughts on Shakespeare before he looked up at the second portrait. Oh Dr. Seuss! Such a great children's book writer. "That's Dr. Seuss as most have already noted. I always like the book Horton Hears a Who!".
"I think one of the most amusing lines I can remember is: 'ASAP. Whatever that means. It must mean, 'Act swiftly awesome pacyderm!'"

Selina had no idea who the next author was and she was disappointed that they were only going to touch on Shakespeare. This was a class and Selina wanted to learn something not just touch on something. Besides, she had no clue who this next author was so she was just going to remain silent anyway. The redhead always felt silly when she could not participate in conversations in class and only a few named students were going to know Muggle authors; although, she had to admit that she really liked the one quote that Cerulean had picked it. It was sweet, simple, and to the point. It actually reminded Selina of The Tales of Beedle the Bard. But that could not be the same author- that book was magical. Obviously, Muggle Studies was not.
Ughhhh WHO WAS THIS GUY? And he had funny facial hair.
In the split second in which the candy came flying towards him, Lewis briefly considered ducking in case it wasn't candy but something else. Like...poop or something. Then again, why would the professor throw poop at him? His answer couldn't have been THAT wrong. So in the end, he took a chance and caught the thing. Which turned out to be candy after all. A...he held it a little closer to his face to read what name was written on it. A Tootsie Roll to be exact. Interesting.
Shakespeare he knew, he knew very well actually but he still took notes on what the other people were saying. Including quotes. Not that he managed to write them all down but he was pretty sure he got more than half. He might have to look up some more later in the library. Oh...hang on, did the Hogwarts Library have books by Shakespeare? Or on rather.
Next picture was...an old man. Who he'd never seen before. Listening to some of the other people answering, Lewis wrote down the man's name but nothing else. Dr. Seuss. He did sound vaguely familiar but he really didn't quite know why. Or from where. He was pretty sure he'd never read anything by him. Would they be reading parts of the books in class too? At least from the authors they were covering right now.

When the next portrait appeared, the Ravenclaw blinked for a moment then furrowed his brows slightly. He.... didnt know who this was. The name Stan Lee crossed his mind but he didnt remember that Muggle to be poetic. He looked around to listen to the other students excitedly answering. Dr Seuss? This was Dr Seuss? For some reason Vickers thought Dr Seuss was a talking cat.

Ella smiled when she saw the picture as Dr. Seuss was one her favorites as a kid. Something about the rhyming really attracted her attention and the stories were always quite silly and fun to listen to! She raised her hand with a wide grin. "Professor, as many have already said, that's Dr. Seuss! One of my favorite books of his is If I Ran the Zoo" Because who didn't imagine what they would do if they ran their own zoo?
Annabelle recognized the man, "Professor that man's name is Dr.Seuss." Annabelle said while raising her hand. "I loved his books and one of my favorites by him is One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish." Her mom used to read that book to her back in the muggle world.
Gemma shook her head at each of the student's answers. "Yes you are all correct..." she said picking up a bag beside her and digging in it. With each correct answer, she dug out a Tootsie Roll and tossed it at the students...bribery was a good way to get answers...yes it would work great!
The professor turned her head to look at the student as she asked her question with a sweet smile on her face, "Yes, Alyssa...you bring up an excellent point. Some books can be consider a compilation of the two due to where the story has it's roots from...."
She looked around the circle of soft L chairs and then continued with the lesson, "As the students mentioned, Fiction is the form of any narrative or informative work that deals, in part or in whole, with information or events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary..." she said trying to make eye contact with as many students as she could. "Non-fiction is the form of any narrative, account, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be factual and can be traced through history and facts to be factual."
She paused to let that sink in and to eat a few pieces of Chicago Style popcorn. "Now in each of these two types of literature there are tons of other forms of literature. For instance, Fiction can be divided into a number of forms including but not limited to Drama, Poetry, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Humor, Fables, Fairy Tales, Horror, Legends, Mystery, Mythology, etc." She took a breath and then continued, "And Non-Fiction can be divided into a number of forms such as Narrative Non-Fiction, Essays, Research Papers, Biographies and Autobiographies, Speeches, etc."
"Let's start discussing some different authors. We'll start with a very famous Fictional author from the 16th and 17th Century. He was well known for a variety of works in his years and was also rumored to be a part of a conspiracy surrounding his literature." She stood up and walked to a portrait hanging in a corner of the room. It was dark and hard to make out. When she got beside it she recited, "To be, or not to be." she paused with a smile, "This above all: to thine own self be true..." she held out her hand and made the words overdramatic with a little laugh.
Finally she clicked on the light hanging over the portrait and the picture lite up.
SPOILER!!: Portrait
"Can anyone tell me who this is? And could you share some more of his famous lines from his works? Please only share one so there are enough for everyone." she said glancing from the portrait to the students.
OOC: Remember to raise your hands and to keep talking to a minimum. When you are giving famous lines, please try not to repeat those that have already been shared. Thanks! I lovers you all!
Angelina has seen his picture before in books so the first time seeing it was easy to put a name to the person. Raising her hand she said, "Professor that would be William Shakespeare." She has read Romeo and Juliet by him, but she didn't like it too much. It was a great story, just the whole part of them getting married only nearly a day of knowing each other, got her.
SPOILER!!: professor

"Amazing everyone! You are all correct." She said looking back at the portrait and only now realizing how unflattering the portrait was. He wasn't near as handsome as the movies from the twentieth century had portrayed him. "The words and quotes of William Shakespeare can be found everywhere from the Muggle world to the Wizarding World from other author's literature to advertising to movies, etc. He was truly one of the greatest fathers of literature. He is best known for his many famous plays from Romeo and Juliet to Hamlet to Midsummer Night, etc." as she mentioned each play she pointed towards the student that had mentioned lines. "He has been credited for writing over 37 plays and 154 sonnets. And he revolutionized the world of theatre early on." she said excitedly. "He is an extremely interesting man, surrounded by controversy and innovation, that we could literally spend an entire term studying." but we won't...but only because she was afraid no one would come to lessons...she thought keeping a giggle to herself.
"Okay now on to our next author...." she said as she walked towards another unlit portrait on the wall. "This author is known for creating many words in our language, some of these words were obsurb but many are words that we use on a regular basis. He was a pioneer in children's books and encouraged children to think outside of the box. " she clicked on the light over the portrait. "Here's one of my most favoritest quotes 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.'” she glanced at the portrait, "This man created a whole new world of imagination for students and to believe that 'Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.'" yes she slipped that last part in to see if anyone grabbed onto it.
SPOILER!!: Portrait 2
"Does anyone recognize this author? Could you name one of his books or a famous line or quote of his? Remember to only share one so there are plenty for everyone else..." she asked looking out to see if any of the faces lit up with excitement over this author.
OOC: Remember to raise your hands and to keep talking to a minimum. When you are giving famous lines, please try not to repeat those that have already been shared. Thanks!
This man Angelina seen a few times. He half blood cousin gave her a book by this man. She was only six years old, it was one of her first books she read she loved. Although she couldn't remember which book. Rising her hand to answer the question she said, "Professor that would be Dr. Seuss." she knew that wasn't really his full name, but she couldn't remember what it was.

OOOH Alex knew a quote from this man! Not that he hadn't known any from Shakespeare, but all the ones he did know had been taken and he wasn't very good at remembering lines from his works. He raised his hand.
"Professor, that's Doctor Seuss. He wrote one of the best childrens books, in my opinion, titled The Sneetches which teaches young kids about accepting others even though they're different and the way you look doesn't make you better than anyone else..." he explained. This was SO the first story he was going to read his kids when he had them someday.

Violet had been very confused about the portraits the professor had put up, especially the first one where she had no idea who William Shakespeare was. Then the professor put up the second photo. She knew exactly who the man was. She raised up her hand to answer the questions "Professor, that's Dr. Seuss. He wrote many famous children's book and my favourite by him is called Green Eggs and Ham. It taught me to try new things even if it seems like I don't like it. It never hurts to try it and see if you like it." [/B]
She smiled at the students, "Yes, this is Dr. Seuss...and as mentioned, he wasn't really a practicing doctor...but he did adopt the name Dr. Seuss as his pen name. He is well known for a variety of eclectic children's book. He was a master at rhymes and as I mentioned he created a variety of words to help make his different lines rhyme. " she paused to take a breath and then continued, "He was a very successful and well known children's author in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in the Muggle World. There were lots of movies and animation movies made from his variety of books. I was even brought up with these books because my mother read them to me every night." she said excitedly and then stopped that line of thought because then that would lead to her brother...and focus Gemma, "He created some amazing characters like the Cat in the Hat, the Lorax, the Whos and the Grinch. He had a vivid imagination and was praised for his ingenuity and creativity."
She walked as she talked to the next portrait on the wall...which just like the other two was dimmed out. When she reached the portrait, she started with the introduction. "This next author was also an author in the twentieth and twenty first century. Just like Dr. Seuss, he had many of his novels, books, and stories turned into movies, both for the television and the big screen. But, this author was in a complete different genre. He was known for mysteries and horrors." she paused as she flicked on the light of the portrait. "This man is well known for writing and publishing over 268 novels and short stories...and over 100 of these were turned into a movie." she glanced at the man, whom actually looked like an innocent and kind old grandpa but she knew there had to be something a little off for him to be able to think up some of the stuff that he did. "Some of his most famous works are Carrie, Misery, and Christine. I do want to note that many of his works are not school appropriate and we are just studying him to recognize him as one of the top authors throughout the years in his genre. We will not be discussing his literature in detail and these books will not be available in the library. " yes she had to admire the man but knew that many of the books were not for young eyes, but just as they had to study Voldermort and the Death Eaters and their horrid affairs in History of Magic so would they discuss the works of Stephen King in quick passing.
Satisfied with her disclaimer about the author, her face softened and she continued with the question, "So any guesses on whom this man is? Can anyone name any other works by him?"
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."
Adam eyed the portrait before a small smile played on his face. He had heard of the man and knew many of his books, but he had never gotten around to reading any of them. After all horror movies and books had never really been Adam's strong suit. Not to say that he was a wimp, but he would take a good action book or mystery before a creepy, supernatural story. "The man in the portrait is Stephen King," Adam said after being called on. "One of his more popular works is The Shining, which I believe was adapted into a very popular muggle film."

Ella was surprised and pleased to hear that Professor Cerulean's mom had read her Dr. Seuss books too when she was a child. That was so cool! Especially since Ella's dad had done the same with her. It was a tradition, reading before bed.
As the next portrait was shown, Ella had a little trouble recognizing the face. Hm...He wrote 'Carrie'? That sounded really familiar. Her Gram had that on her bookshelf if Ella wasn't mistaken. It was quite a scary story, one she wasn't allowed to read, though she remembered the author's name. "Professor, It's Stephen King." The second year said confidently. "He also wrote It and Pet Semetary and It is about an-an evil being that can change kind of like a boggart...though it's usually a clown. SO scary."
Nigel was still happy that she showed Dr, Seuss because he so did love his books. When he looked up again the professor was moving on.
Nigel looked at the next portrait and tried to think if he had seen the man before. Um... Nope nothing came to mind, Nigel thought. He had no idea who it was or that he even was an author. He would just let the other people answer this question.

Eep! Emmanuelle was GLAD they would not be going into detail about the next author! She had been terrified the summer her brother had developed a obsession with the mans stories and conned her into watching The Shining with him. It still gave her the chills to this very day. So her hand went slower this time before she answered. "That's Stephen King, professor. Another work of his is [I]Under the Dome." And great, now she was shivering in fear.

Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey had never interested himself in anything by Shakespeare except for Hamlet. He also didn't know any Author by the name of Dr. Suess, His children book he grew up on was "Tales of Beedle the Bard".
But Oakey knew about Stephen King.
Oakey's Gaurdian, Harvey had tons of these in his study. They were the only muggle books Harvey collected and read. Oakey once took one and attemped to read it but it was snatched away from him seconds later. He remembers the first sentence of that book to a T. It read, "The Man in Black fled across the Dessert, and the Gunslinger followed."
Oakey's hand jolted up knocking over his popcorn and spilling it on the floor. Professor! That's Stephen King! Oakey said in excited and disregarding his spilled popcorn. He wrote a seven book series called the Dark Tower, The first book was called "The Gunslinger"! Oakey wanted to go home now and try and sneak reading this book again, he was old enough to read it now wasn't he? I think It also inspired a comic series. Comics are books that having unmoving pictures that tell stories. Oh Idea! Could the Library have a section for muggle comics as well?

Kurumi wrinkled her nose again and aimlessly nibbled on some of the popcorn she had brought over that had been meant for Selina. The Gryffindor couldn't help but wish that they were being introduced to authors that they could then go to the library and read about or some of their works. Seemed like an awful way to tease students. Introduce them to a famous author but then tell them that they couldn't go out and read their works.
Kurumi looked at the portrait when it appeared and rubbed the back of her neck again. Whoever he was, he didn't write in a genre that Kurumi was familiar with or else she would surely have recognized him and his name when several students offered up answers. Not to mention some of the looks on people's faces implied that his writings were rather scary...and Kurumi didn't do too well with scary literature.
So, Kurumi's attention was back on her parchment and note taking.

Desiree had definitely never heard of this guy, she was surprised she even knew Dr. Seuss. Besides the fact she didn't really read any muggle literature, (or literature in general) if she did she was pretty sure she wouldn't be reading his books, scary horror stories weren't her cup of tea. So she just sat and listened to others answer, Stephen King, huh. Nope still didn't ring a bell.

Jonathan just had no answers to who the 2nd and 3rd people were. He was not introduced to them before, unlike the Shakespeare guy, even though most of the people knew him. He must have been really that famous. Jonathan just took notes instead, taking out his journal and his quill. He starting jotting down the notes.
The second person is Dr. Seuss and he is famous for children's story books. That all Jonathan could catch up. It took him a lot of time to finally realize that yes, he needed to copy the names of which the professor is giving to them. He can already feel the homework would be to write something about them.
And then the 3rd person didn't look as familiar to him as the 2nd one. Jonathan pursed his lips and sat down on his chair with a quill on his hand. He didn't know who it is but some students really did. He'll just wait for the Professor's answer.
