Muggle Studies Lesson #1-Muggle Literature and Authors Introduction
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When you walk into the Muggle Studies classroom, you instantly notice that there are books suspended in the air above you. Don't worry these are just for decorations and to get you into the mood of the lesson theme for the year.
SPOILER!!: The Ceiling
The desks have been replaced with special L shaped chairs that have been charmed to be extra comfy when you sit down. There is a big sparkly blue one at the front of the class that the Professor is sitting/rocking in as everyone comes into the classroom. She has her usual welcoming smile on her face and she is dressed in her favorite pair of blue pajamas and big fluffy house shoes.
SPOILER!!: The chairs
In normal Muggle Studies and Cerulean style, there is a goodies and drink table near the front of the room. It has been charmed to keep everything refilled and ready to rock. On the table, you can find plastic bowls and napkins, a popcorn bar filled with a variety of flavors, and different Muggle drinks in plastic bottles. The drinks are Coke, Cherry Coke, Dr. Pepper, Sprite, Tea, Sweet Tea, Red Gatorade, and Water. The popcorn comes in the following flavors: Buttery, Caramel, Chicago Style, Rainbow Flavored, Extra Cheese, and Garlic.
SPOILER!!: Popcorn Bar
Please help yourself to the goodies and drinks and have a seat. Get comfy and feel free to talk among yourself until the class starts.
OOC: Please sit down and grab something to drink and eat. Professor Cerulean is already in her chair eating some popcorn and waiting for everyone to arrive. The class will officially start later on tonite about 9:30ish pm CST. Thanks!
Selina was pleased at the way the class was shaping up. First, she got to mention the Aeneid, which was the highlight of the class thus far, and then Cerulean brought up Shakespeare! When Selina was little her mother was over in Australia and working and her father was off playing for the Falcons. With both of them missing Selina found her outlet in books, painting, and Quidditch. But whenever her mother would come home for however brief the time she would give Selina a Shakespeare play to read. Her Mum was adamant about Selina being well read, that was why she learned Latin, so Shakespeare was something Selina knew well.
The redhead with a small smile rose her hand and said, "It's Willy Shakespeare and its one of Hamlet's million speeches in the play. And one of his famous plays and my personal favorite is Much Ado About Nothing. And my favorite line is when Beatrice is going off after Hero gets disgraced at the altar. She complains about men and says- but manhood is melted into courtesy, valor into compliment, and men are only turned to tongue and trim ones too. He is now as valiant as Hercules that only tells a lie and swears it!" Shakespeare had such an eloquent way of saying that men were babies most of the time.
Dale smiled eeeeeeeeeever so slightly as he raised his hand.
"William Shakespeare. There's a really famous line by him from Hamlet, and then after that is my favourite... ahem..." Yeah, Dale was clearing his throat. Like a literature BOSS. "To die, to sleep. To sleep - perchance to dream..." He wavered. "I can't remember them all very well. But, like, Shakespeare didn't ONLY do plays... there were, like, poems and stuff. Sonnets. He was a total genius, man."
Yeyah.

"Professor that's William Shakespeare, he wrote many books and plays. Possibly, one of the most brilliant play writes of all time...although it's suspected William Shakespeare never wrote a single story but that someone else did.." He said thinking of his trip to the Globe over the summer with Taylor, but also the mystery surrounding whoever wrote the stories. "The poet's eye, in a fine frenzy rolling, doth glance from heaven to earth, from earth to heaven: and as imagination bodies forth the forms of things unknown, the poets pen turns them to shapes, and gives to airy nothing a local habitation and a name" He smiled realizing he remembered the whole thing "That's from a Mid Summer Night's Dream, one of my favorites."

The professor turned her head to look at the student as she asked her question with a sweet smile on her face, "Yes, Alyssa...you bring up an excellent point. Some books can be consider a compilation of the two due to where the story has it's roots from...."
She looked around the circle of soft L chairs and then continued with the lesson, "As the students mentioned, Fiction is the form of any narrative or informative work that deals, in part or in whole, with information or events that are not factual, but rather, imaginary..." she said trying to make eye contact with as many students as she could. "Non-fiction is the form of any narrative, account, or other communicative work whose assertions and descriptions are understood to be factual and can be traced through history and facts to be factual."
She paused to let that sink in and to eat a few pieces of Chicago Style popcorn. "Now in each of these two types of literature there are tons of other forms of literature. For instance, Fiction can be divided into a number of forms including but not limited to Drama, Poetry, Fantasy, Science Fiction, Humor, Fables, Fairy Tales, Horror, Legends, Mystery, Mythology, etc." She took a breath and then continued, "And Non-Fiction can be divided into a number of forms such as Narrative Non-Fiction, Essays, Research Papers, Biographies and Autobiographies, Speeches, etc."
"Let's start discussing some different authors. We'll start with a very famous Fictional author from the 16th and 17th Century. He was well known for a variety of works in his years and was also rumored to be a part of a conspiracy surrounding his literature." She stood up and walked to a portrait hanging in a corner of the room. It was dark and hard to make out. When she got beside it she recited, "To be, or not to be." she paused with a smile, "This above all: to thine own self be true..." she held out her hand and made the words overdramatic with a little laugh.
Finally she clicked on the light hanging over the portrait and the picture lite up.
SPOILER!!: Portrait
"Can anyone tell me who this is? And could you share some more of his famous lines from his works? Please only share one so there are enough for everyone." she said glancing from the portrait to the students.
OOC: Remember to raise your hands and to keep talking to a minimum. When you are giving famous lines, please try not to repeat those that have already been shared. Thanks! I lovers you all!
His eyes shifted to the portrait that appeared before them. Hey he knows who this is. He raised a hand and replied "That is William Shakespeare, arguably the most celebrated English playwright and poet in Muggle history." And with good reason he thought, just based on the works he's read. "There is a line from the first act of Hamlet--one of Shakespeare's most popular plays-- of a father's advise to a son that goes 'This above all: to thine ownself be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man.'"

Cocking her to the side for a moment and nearly missed the flying piece of candy that had been tossed at her. At perhaps the very last second, Kurumi's former Seeker reflexes kicked in and her right hand flew in front of her face and managed to catch the...whatever candy this was before it hit her between the eyes. Kurumi didn't eat it, however, and set it down in front of her. Maybe Selina would want it?
When the portrait of a man appeared in front of them, Kurumi knew he was William Shakespeare, but there was really no need to repeat what several others had already said. When they were asked to share their favorite quote...Kurumi bit down on her lip nervously. Truth was, while she had read some of his works, she hadn't actually read them in English. Likewise, her favorite words of his were in Japanese as well. Shyly, Kurumi raised her hand. "I-I'm afraid I have never read any of Shakespeare's works in English, but my favorite line comes from..." She paused for a moment to search for the English title in her mind. "...As You Like It." Kurumi paused again as she attempted to recall the precise words. "Zen-sekai ga hitotsu no butai, soko-dewa danjo wo towanu, ningen wa subete yakusha ni suginai. It translates as The world in its entirety is one stage. There, whether man or woman, all humans are nothing more than actors." And then Kurumi lowered her hand. She didn't know what the original English sounded like, but that shouldn't matter, right?

Annabelle raised her hand to let the professor know who the guy in the portrait was, "Professor isn't the guy in the portrait name is William Shakespeare?" she asked nervously. Then she remembered some works from Shakespeare, "Professor isn't one of his works named Romeo and Juliette?" she asked unsure if she got the name right.

A picture was shown to them. Quite frankly, the man in that portrait really REALLY looks familiar to Jonathan. He wasn't sure which person had told him about this man but his name was on the tip of his tongue. He can't be quite sure what it is though. Sha... Sheek... Or something like that. Come on Jonathan... think... think... He remembers that he was at the Takahashi's place staying in for the summer because his parents just suddenly went on vacation without telling him. Ryu was explaining a lot about him...
AHA! Jonathan snapped his fingers!
He raised his hand smiling. It is such a good thing that he is a great listener even though he barely listens to the whole story and thank Merlin he remembers the important details too. He is so happy he can't even believe it "William Shakespeare?" he said still doubting it's the correct name. He usually mix up the muggle names. And as for his famous quotes... Jonathan's hand was still raised up but he couldn't seem to remember the man's famous lines. What was it that Ryu was talking about?
"And often times excusing of a fault doth make the fault the worse by the excuse." or at least that's kinda like it. Is it right?

Emmanuelle's hand shot up like an arrow before she answered. " That's Shakespeare! One famous line from his plays is Et tu, Brute? from Julius Cesar. Julius says it after all of his men, even his closest lieutenant, Brutus, have turned on him." Yep, she loved that particular play, for reasons unknown to even her.

Gemma was so excited about all of the lines the students knew that she literally had to keep herself from jumping up and down. Her face beamed with pride. And so many different lines and plays...wow....Hoggy Warts students RAWKED...no really they do...
"Amazing everyone! You are all correct." She said looking back at the portrait and only now realizing how unflattering the portrait was. He wasn't near as handsome as the movies from the twentieth century had portrayed him. "The words and quotes of William Shakespeare can be found everywhere from the Muggle world to the Wizarding World from other author's literature to advertising to movies, etc. He was truly one of the greatest fathers of literature. He is best known for his many famous plays from Romeo and Juliet to Hamlet to Midsummer Night, etc." as she mentioned each play she pointed towards the student that had mentioned lines. "He has been credited for writing over 37 plays and 154 sonnets. And he revolutionized the world of theatre early on." she said excitedly. "He is an extremely interesting man, surrounded by controversy and innovation, that we could literally spend an entire term studying." but we won't...but only because she was afraid no one would come to lessons...she thought keeping a giggle to herself.
"Okay now on to our next author...." she said as she walked towards another unlit portrait on the wall. "This author is known for creating many words in our language, some of these words were obsurb but many are words that we use on a regular basis. He was a pioneer in children's books and encouraged children to think outside of the box. " she clicked on the light over the portrait. "Here's one of my most favoritest quotes 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened.'” she glanced at the portrait, "This man created a whole new world of imagination for students and to believe that 'Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.'" yes she slipped that last part in to see if anyone grabbed onto it.
SPOILER!!: Portrait 2
"Does anyone recognize this author? Could you name one of his books or a famous line or quote of his? Remember to only share one so there are plenty for everyone else..." she asked looking out to see if any of the faces lit up with excitement over this author.
OOC: Remember to raise your hands and to keep talking to a minimum. When you are giving famous lines, please try not to repeat those that have already been shared. Thanks!
Oichi quickly raised her hand as soon as she saw the photo. She had loved muggle English class thanks to her muggle teachers love of Shakespeare. "Professor, thats Shakspeare, I remember reading Othello from him and found his writing facinating. One of the lines I really like is...... In following him I follow but myself; Heaven is my judge, not I for love and duty, But seeming so for my peculiar end."
Maxwell raised his hand. "Professor, that's Dr. Suess. His book 'Green Eggs and Ham' was the first book i read on my own..." He said thinking of the books with fondness.
ariana raised her hand "professor that would be Theodor Seuss Geisel also known as Dr. Seuss! my favorite quote of his is “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...” from his book Oh, the Places You'll Go!" she said a bit too excited that she knew too much about him
Nigel knew who he was immediately. Nigel loved reading his books especially Cat in the Hat. Nigel raised his hand. "Professor, Professor, that is Dr. Seuss. I loved Cat in the Hat."

Mika immediately recognized the old man in the portrait with his ridiculous glasses. She thought those glasses were hilarious and wanted to wear them herself. Hand shooting into the air like there was no tomorrow and bouncing in her seat she smiled almost creepily.
"That is Theodor Seuss Geisel he's more commonly known as Dr. Seuss" and what was he a doctor of. "He's not even really a doctor he never finished training" now she was just spurting out a needless fact.
"My favorite of his famous lines was I have heard there are troubles of more than one kind. Some come from ahead and some come from behind. But I've bought a big bat. I'm all ready you see. Now my troubles are going to have troubles with me!...I don't know why I like it I just do. Maybe because I keep imagining a GIANT baseball bat and the troubles being knocked away but a part of me imagines a bat like the flying swoopy ones that eat bugs and I think now that is awesome and my troubles would have trouble with me if I had a giant bat to eat them" wow did she ever sound like a creepzillagirl.

Alyssa immediately raised her hand and answered, "Professor that guy in the picture is Theodore Seuss Geisel, otherwise famously known as Dr. Suess. He wrote many books and my favorite quote is from the book "I Can Read With My Eyes Shut.".
The quote goes like this,"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." 'Now that saying is so cool.'Alyssa thought to herself.

Minerva didn't know the first author so she didn't say anything, but the second one she did know and put up her hand. "Professor that is Dr. Suess and he wrote the Cat in the hat, and The Grinch that Stole Christmas. He wrote others, but I really never liked his books so I can't remember." She wasn't sure why she added that last bit, but oh well it was out there.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jory raised his hand. "It's Dr. Seuss, Professor. He wrote "Green Eggs and Ham'','' he said. That was Jory's favourite book by the man and he still read it sometimes at home. What could he do? It brought back childhood memories.
His hand still in the air, Jory continued. "A quote by him is I like nonsense, it wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living." And the Puff quite agreed.

Ooooh! She actually KNEW that the one in the picture was Shakespeare. She knew, and she loved his works, and even knew a famous quote -
... but they moved on to that boring old man, whom she didn't recognize. Well, she might have tried a few muggle books since she started attending Muggle Studies, but she still couldn't cover them ALL. So all Nora did was lean back against her seat and wait, because she had no idea who that man was. Hmph.

Anya's hand shot up. Yeah. She knew that quote. She didn't know the picture... but she knew that quote! It was her FAVORITE author. "That's Dr. Seuss!" she said excitedly. Theodore something or other.
And... of course she was going to quote something from her favorite book. "My favorite line of his is 'And will you succeed? Yes indeed, yes indeed! Ninety-eight and three-quarters percent guaranteed.'" Why? Because it was pretty much the most brilliant thing to have ever been said.
Her next favorite quote was "In my world, everyone's a pony and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflies!” But that probably wasn't appropriate for class.

Prue fought to keep herself from bouncing in excitement but the look on her face was completely amazed and excited. She couldn't contain that much of the emotion she felt towards this author. "That's Dr Seuss! Do you like green eggs and ham? I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham" she recited over enthusiastically!
Desiree stared at the man in the portrait; he didn't look familiar.. but she couldn't help but feel like she had heard that quote somewhere.. Oh she remembered! The Slytherin raised her hand high and smiled a little, "That's Dr. Seuss, Professor, and the second quote is from his book Happy Birthday to You" Her sister had got it for her on her birthday a looong time ago, and they had read it together. For some reason it had just stuck with her apparently.
She paused for a minute, and then added to her answer, "Something he said was '“Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don't matter and those who matter don't mind." She didn't even know where she'd heard it from, but she really liked it.
Michelle adored Shakespeare. Not necessarily the way he wrote things, because she had always been a fan of simple language, but mostly because his stories were quite amazing. But the man in the next picture was someone that she could recognise even when she was half asleep.
His books were one of the first things she ever read. How could she forget him?
"Professor, it is undoubtedly Dr. Seuss," she said, raising her hand.
All of a sudden, Chelle was feeling nostalgic. She remembered her childhood. It seemed so far away. And as for his quotes... there was one she especially liked. It was something Jake had written on the first page of a book that he'd gifted her for her ninth birthday. It was so... JAKE.
Her eyes shining, Chelle said, "You know you're in love when you can't fall asleep because reality is finally better than your dreams." She paused, then continued fondly. "That's my favourite quote by Dr. Seuss."

"THAT'S DR. SUESS."
He should know, he authored his favourite book that he mentioned earlier. "He wrote 'Green Eggs and Ham.'" Like, the best book in ancient history? And should he repeat the words? Hm...... cos he knew them! Yes, okay.
"Do you like green eggs and ham? I do not like them, Sam-I-am. I do not like GREEN EGGS AND HAM."
WOOT.
How awesome.

Zack got more excited as they moved on with the lesson. Muggle studies was one of his favourite lessons in Hogwarts. He didn't know much about muggles being pure blood, but he did hear a lot from his mom and dad sometimes. He hadn't had much idea of their books and stuff but being in one of the muggle studies lesson he didn't sometimes feel like a mugggle and how wonderful their lives were. He did sometimes in his dreams think if he was a muggle born he could fly in airplanes rather than broomsticks. Not that he didn't like a broom stick ride in fact he loved it but just that he would know how it feels to be in an airplanes. That would be really amazing he would think whenever he thought of a plane ride.
Coming back in the class he looked at the next portrait that professor was now showing. It vaguely remained him of someone. He looked so familiar to his grandfather. That man really looked like his grandfather and that Zack would actually call him grandfather only if not he'd remembered that this man lived many centuries ago and that really couldn't be his grandfather, no not at all. So, now in the same way as he didn't know the man earlier in the pic he didn't know this one too. So he sat patiently in his seat as the others shared their favourite quotes. Hm…they are really nice quotes he thought as he heard the students telling their favourite lines.

"That's Theodor Seuss Geisel, Professor. Or most widely known under his pen name Dr. Seuss." he said raising his hand up in the air. "My favorite line of his is A person's a person, no matter how small. Its from Horton Hears a Who. One of the children book that he penned." he said enthusiastically. He loves Horton Hears a Who, its one of the best children books ever! And not to mention that his Nana always read that particular book every time when Messer was little.
