It was actually quite nice being able to return to Hogwarts to teach a special class; Althea Schirmer, new Department Head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes did miss her former students at least a little bit. Most of them. Some of them. She did hope her particular favourites would be interested in attending, even if she wouldn't acknowledge who they were out loud. Not charms of course, rather she was presenting an introduction to Alchemy, one of the subjects rather close to her heart as a metal charmer.
She rather hoped that it might just encourage an interest amongst some of the students. Usually Alchemy lessons were only offered to 6th and 7th years, but Gaellen had asked her to make the material as accessible as possible to all ages, and she'd done her best though she intended to make it clear that if anyone did not understand anything, they should look into it further in their own time, she was only tasked with introducing key concepts, not ensuring that the slower children knew the subject inside out.
And really there was only so much you could do in one lesson.
Tables had been set up in the observatory rather similarly to what might be found in the potions classroom, except that there was an array of unusual equipment on each table -no two tables had precisely the same item, though all seemed similar somehow, or perhaps like they were made for similar purposes, or to be used together. Some appeared to be in miniature, as a representative of what it might truly be, just for demonstration purposes.
She had set up a board behind her, on which was the following, charmed to scroll across the top:
Quote:
The Goals of the Alchemist
--find the panacea
--find the alkahest
--turning things into gold (chrysopoeia) and other noble metals
Magnum Opus (The Great Work, or finding the Philosopher's Stone) nigredo-a blackening or melanosis albedo -a whitening or leucosis citrinitas - a yellowing or xanthosis rubedo - a reddening, purpling, or iosis
Definitions Alkahest - Believed by Paracelsus to be the Philosophers Stone, or an element of its creation. This is a hypothetical universal solvent, having the power to dissolve every other substance, including gold.
Azoth - This serves as the essential agent of alchemical transformation, and embodies the concept of the main goals in Alchemy it is a possible universal medicine, universal solvent, or Elixir of Life. It is a name for Mercury as cardinal principle of Alchemy.
Chrysopoeia - A symbolic representation of the Philosophers Stone, chrysopoeia means transmutation into gold, from the Greek khrusōn, 'gold', and poiēin, 'to make'.
Panacea - also called the pancrest, or Panakeia in Greek, is named for the Greek Goddess of universal remedy, she supposedly had a magical medicinal substance which could cure all ills. It is a remedy that is supposed to cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely.
Solve et Coagula - 'Separate and Join Together' (or dissolve and coagulate')
Spagyrics -the production of herbal medicines using alchemical techniques such as fermentation, distillation and the extraction of mineral components from the ash of a plant. Greek for 'separate and recombine'
The Cardinal Principles of Alchemy The Alchemical trinity of principles.
In alchemical terms all things are composed of three parts- Sulphur , Mercury, and Salt. The alchemist separates and recombines these three cardinal principles as often as necessary until they are in perfect proportion and harmony, and the raw material has been reduced to its purest essence.

"Welcome everyone." Althea greeted as the students began to file in. "Remember this is an optional lesson. I don't much mind if you choose not to stay, but I will see to it that anyone who disrupts this seminar will lose house points, so if you choose to leave, do so quietly." And she was sure the great majority of them knew she wasn't to be trifled with - if she said points might be lost, well, they might just.
"I'm Althea Schirmer, most of you know me as your former Charms professor, But I am now Department Head of Accidents and Catastrophes at the British Ministry of Magic, and today I'm here to introduce you all to the field of Alchemy, which I studied alongside Experimental Charms, Medieval Charms and Metal Charming during my university career. You may still address me as Professor Schirmer. We will begin in a few moments."
----------------------- OOC: This is your first seminar for the term! Totally optional to attend, all students may join in except mine. It will be around 20 hours before the class actually begins, feel free to post arriving and settling in until then, and remember that your charrie is being watched, so don't be bad and stuff. It will be open for 1 week.
Additional updates regarding when the next posts can be expected will be found in my most recent post.
My posts will be indexed in this first post, and anyone can PM or VM me if they aren't sure how to jump in.
Don't forget, you're encouraged to RP your charrie not knowing things if you don't think that they would. As long as they're listening and taking notes and being engaged in the lesson, you won't be penalised and will still earn points. Its up to you what you think your character would already know.
INDEX OF POSTS AND QUESTIONS Question One: What is the purpose of Alchemy? What are the goals of the Alchemist? asked here ----- answered here Question Two: What do you know about the cardinal principles of Alchemy, salt, sulphur and mercury? What are they? What do they mean? asked here ----- answered here Question Three: What connections can you think of between Astrology and Alchemy? Also, if there are any questions about what has been covered so far, now is the time to ask them. asked here ----- answered here Question Four: Aside from Carl Jung and Sir Isaac Newton, who are some famous Alchemists and what are some of their achievements? asked here ----- answered here
Activity: "What I want you to do, is have one person from your table stand up, and I will call on that person and explain what the instrument on their table is and what it does. Then as a class, you'll each look through your symbol sheets and see if you can identify related symbols. You may have noticed the symbol lists aren't in English, but you are all familiar enough with Latin by now that you should be able to deduce which is correct. So one person from each group please stand up and we'll get started."
OOC: Please PM this to Tegz with your username, usernumber, house, character name and year. IE if I were submitting it I'd include:

Kurumi's attention was pulled away from Lewis when a familiar Hufflepuff appeared at their table. "H-Hello again, Kate," she said, offering a polite bow of the head in the girl's direction. Kurumi still found the older girl a little intimidating with her silvery or blonde or whatever color locks the girl had. Still, Kurumi kept her face pleasant and tried not to look as intimidated as she felt on the inside. She hardly knew the girl after all.

Noticing the small group around Kurumi she smiled and made her way to them, "Mind if I join the group Kurumi?"
THERE IT WAS! The bowing from Kurumi. That will always make her feel extra special, hence why her smile brightened even more, if possible, at the sight of this. Kurumi was nice to have around for sure. Plus, she was a Prefect, she ought to be smart, right? Right.
Not that Kate mattered much.
And someone else asked Miss Popular (aka. Kurumi) to sit down? Well, yes, by all means, the girl could join them, she only asked Kurumi so Kate didn't make any other reply other than giving the young one a wide smile.

Just like this girl, at least judging by the color of her robes. So that was probably why she knew his name.
"H-hello." Oh, and she was joining them too? And Kurumi seemed to know her already. Somehow he REALLY needed to leave his Common Room more often. Kurumi always knew everybody it seemed and he just...knew a couple of people. Though with this one, his best chance of meeting her would have actually been IN the Common Room so. "Nice to meet you...Kate...?" That's what Kurumi had just called her, right?
Aaaand there was another person joining their group. Or asking for permission to join anyway. Lewis remembered seeing this girl around but not knowing her name either. Again, Lewis, you need to go out more. Because this girl was very unlikely to be found in the Hufflepuff Common Room. Like ever. Unless she knew how to sneak in. Which hopefully she didn't. He didn't want her to get in trouble after all.
Plus, it was the HUFFLEPUFF Common Room.
The girl had asked Kurumi for permission but since she seemed a little distracted at the moment, Lewis decided it was okay to answer for her instead. "Hello, I'm Lewis." Okay, that didn't answer the girl's question, did it? Blushing a little he tried again, this time even gesturing towards one of the empty chairs at their table. "S-sure. The more the merrier." Or so they said. Whoever 'they' was.
Oh! That's right! They've never been properly introduced. Considering Kate was quite observant, she noticed the expression, positioning, and overall gestures between both Prefects...they're together, aren't they? Awww, that was cute.
"Yes, it's very nice to...officially meet you, Louis," see? She'd even gotten his name right.
Although, as he introduced himself to the newcomer, Kate couldn't help but wonder a tiny little detail, "Wait...is your name Lewis, as in L-E-W-I-S? Or Louis, as in L-O-U-I-S?" if you were going to pronounce it...it didn't make much of a difference, but it did make a difference if you were writing it. Not that she was thinking of doing so, but still.

She fell silent not sure if she should attempt to be conversational or not.
And back to the newcomer, "Hi Jezzabelle, I'm Kate," she nodded as she introduced herself, her silvery-blonde wavy hair (which was actually golden because the sun wasn't hitting it directly) bouncing all the way. "Can I call you Jezz? Or do you prefer your whole name?" fair question.
I'm SO sorry if I missed anyone. I'm already out of practice O_O

In any case, it didn't really matter what subject the lesson she was heading to was about, she was just happy that she'd get to see Professor Schirmer again. It was almost like things were normal again, besides the fact she hadn't been outright insulted in History of Magic. She had every right to look forward to this lesson.
"Good day, Professor Schirmer," she said to the former Charms professor with a smile, making her way carefully to a seat at one of the tables set up in the Astronomy tower. At least it looked interesting, although she followed rules and didn't touch any of the apparatus. She wasn't about to risk trouble. Even if there hadn't been the announcement that points would be lost if she had. There really wasn't any question in that matter, and she wasn't about to start making a bad impression on the professors now. As far as she was concerned, Professor Schirmer still was one of her professors, whethe ror n ot she'd moved on to a position at the Ministry.
"Good to see you, Miss Gardiner." Althea smiled at the Ravenclaw girl.

Paulie filed into the classroom early on and gave a nod toward the blonde woman on his way. "Welcome back, Professor," he greeted before claiming a seat at Miss Stella Gardiner's table. With a smile, Paulie gave a curt wave toward the Ravenclaw. "Hey, Stella! Long time, no see." He opened his mouth to speak again, but Professor Schrimer began to give a brief introduction, so the Gryffindor kept quiet. Well, well, wellllllll. Hopefully this would be fun stuff!
"Thank you, Mr Foster. Congratulations on the badge. Well deserved." Althea responded.

"Good Morning, Miss Burton. Yes; professor is just fine." Althea smiled at the Slytherin.

So here she was, skidding up to the top just to attend the optional class. Before entering, however, she adjusted her robes and smoothed her hair. She also did want to look decent to the instructor since most of them are just invited by the Headmaster to aid them in the seminars. She was even lifting her chin up high like what her Grandmother always says is the proper behavior of a lady, yet when she saw who was welcoming the students, her etiquette vanished and she scampered off to the lady immediately! This was such an amazing opportunity!
Their class...at the Observatory...with a great Professor.....
"PROFESSOR SCHIRMER!" Yeah, she did say that in a not-so-low voice. Gaah, can she hug her? She missed Professor Schirmer! She'd be the one teaching them the basics of Alchemy, yes? She was getting excited over this. Allowing herself to be guided inside, she listened for a bit as Professor Schirmer said a bit of an introduction while she stood at the side of the door, looking for a vacant table. Hmm...at least two but less than five on each table. She certainly hoped Indy would come.
When the lady was done, Beezus walked to the table NEAREST to the Professor and with a smile plastered on her lips, she waited.
Someone looked enthusiastic today. "Good morning, Miss Castell."

With this in mind, Emmanuelle walked into the room that had been set aside specially for the lecture and was instantly mesmerized by the scrolling text. Or was trying to read it, more like. She shook herself out of this when the lecturer professor began to speak. Then she quickly found herself an empty table, hoping that the seat beside her wasn't taken by a young pipsqueak. Ugh, they were the worst!
"Hello, professor!"
"Good Morning." Althea greeted the Slytherin girl.

If reality was even the right word. Entering the room cautiously, Kurumi couldn't help but wonder if the laws of Equivalent Exchange was based on actual fact or just something fabricated by the authors she had come to admire.
It wasn't the slightly unusual set up of tables and what was on it that first caught Kurumi's attention, but the woman standing in the front. "Professor Schirmer," Kurumi chirped as she adjusted the strap of her bag and took several more steps into the classroom. "It is fantastic to see you again, professor." Kurumi set her bag on the ground and took a seat in the front of the room just as the former Charms professor provided a brief introduction. It was almost as if she had never left and Kurumi really wished that she hadn't.
"And you, Miss Hollingberry." Althea smiled encouragingly at the prefect.

Which was one of the reasons the Hufflepuff Prefect was quite happy as he walked into the observatory/classroom.
The other reason was already sitting at a table in the front of classroom.
Smiling at Kurumi he took a couple of steps towards her which was right when the professor addressed the class. That voice sounded so familiar. Lewis turned his head a little to see who was standing there at the front and felt his eyes widen slightly in surprise. "P-professor Schirmer. Hello." What was she doing here? "G-good to see you."And sorry I didn't actually SEE you up until now. Not too keen on standing while everybody else was taking a seat, Lewis hurried towards the table Kurumi was at, a small blushing forming on his lips, and quickly sat down next to her. "Hi." He smiled, brushing his fingers over her hand for a moment before moving to unpack his bag. Actually what did they need for this class? And what were all those items on their table for?
"The badge is a good look for you, Mr Rasting." Althea greeted. Was that stutter new?

"Hi professor Schirmer, good to see you again." And really this tone was the best Louisa could muster at the day.
Moving on toward the seats she... saw a certain Huffie & Gryffie... side by side. Happy. Louisa's face stayed blank as she saw them but she did feel slightly uncomfortable? Since she, y'know, scolded the girl and made the boy even more awkward. The Ravenclaw shifted her eyes off of them and threw her body on one of the random seats.
"And you, Miss Carter." Was it just her or was she a little.... off? Oh well, Thea wasn't a counsellor. On to the Alchemy.

He's not really doing anything for today anyway.
Walking to the classroom on the tower... yes from the dungeons to the seventh floor, Jonathan was still panting at the long way up. Before going inside the classroom, he still tried to fix himself, make himself more presentable for class. And as he he walked inside he saw a very familiar professor--- well, ex-professor of Hogwarts.
PROFESSOR SCHIRMER!!!!!
She was back... Not entirely for the whole year but at least she was back. Jonathan walked inside the room and he was still at awe that he is seeing Professor Schirmer again. What? He missed her in Charms class. So she'll be teaching them about Alchemy, Jonathan can no longer wait. Oh and before he forgets, Jonathan smiled at her "Good to see you back, Professor Schirmer" yes, he was just all smiles seeing her.
Jonathan found a seat on one corner of the room and slid his bag, placed them on the table and waited for the rest of the student body to come in so she can start the lecture.
Aw.
Althea returned the smile. "Mr Kim, you're looking well. Good to see you."

Hopefully she would kind of get the subject though, but that would just be a bonus really. The girl smiled as she wandered up to the observatory. It was nice to be up here again, she had missed it since it had been closed. Mmm. Alchemy. It could be interesting.
Ahh. There she was. Indy had to stop herself launching at the Professor. She was a big girl they didn't do that anymore. But she did want to hug the professor. She had missed her. Without really thinking about it, because really hugging Professor Schirmer probably wasn't the best of ideas, Indy was over there, and hugging the professor. Oh dear. This could really go bad. Like the professor could like kill her. Or tell her to go away. Opps. "Hi Professor..." Indy mused with a little smile, as she looked up. "I missed you..." If she was cute the professor wouldn't kill her right. "I don't like the new charms professor, she's not as good as you. Can't you come back? Please come back." Hmmm. Then she kind of stepped away. Should she sit down now?
Um.
Hugging.
Well Indy was damned lucky that Althea just so happened to be in a good mood. She extracted herself and gave the third year a stern look.
"Now Miss Hutchinson that isn't at all a nice thing to say. Perhaps you ought to give Professor Bellaire a term to settle in. She has plenty she can teach you, if you keep an open mind." She considered taking points for that, for disrespect toward a professor, even if it clearly wasn't meant in a mean way, but the Ravenclaw seemed genuinely distressed.
And why in the hell would Thea take a pay cut to come back here?
"Sit down Miss Hutchinson, I don't want to hear any more of that."

For some unknown reason, Nora missed her, since the new Charms professor wasn't quite her favourite and, even though she sometimes found professor Schirmer rather... scary, she enjoyed her lessons.
With that sheepish, big grin still on her face, the girl took a seat in the front row and stared. She didn't dare to touch anything, but staring was allowed.
... wasn't it?
"Miss Reed. Just for today." She smiled briefly and watched as the girl sat down.

After a very long trek up to the towers from the Hufflepuff common room, Ella finally arrived and smiled, surprised to see Professor Schirmer back at Hogwarts. "Hey Professor, welcome back." The second year said cheerfully before her attention was caught by the board. Noting not to touch anything, Ella set off for one of the empty tables.
"Thank you, Miss Bishop." Althea inclined her head gracefully.

It was fairly obvious she was joining them. Them, because her own House Prefect was there too. Louis, was he? She couldn't recall. "Good morning," she said, with a smile, as her eyes landed on the one imparting this lesson before making her way towards Kurumi and company.
"Hi Kurumi," another smile went towards the Gryffindor, "And Louis," because that was his name, no? At least it sounded like it was.
Once seated, she was extremely impressed with this woman. Like, she was incredibly awesome, wasn't she? Look at everything she's studied. No wonder everyone was missing her.
"Good Morning." Althea greeted courteously. She didn't know who this one was. A transfer?

Some department, that took two years to pronounce. He gave a head nod to Professor Schirmer, making eye contact with him. "Hello Professor Schirmer, good to see you again."

Alchemy was something she had skimmed in her anti-social reading in the library and it had spiked her interest at least. It wouldn't hurt to learn more about it in case she did find it more interesting and might want to further her studies in the future.
Entering the observatory, she took in everything and headed for a table. Seeing her former Charms Professor, she offered a nod and smile. "Good day Professor Schirmer, it's nice to see you again," she voiced as she headed for a free table. She had recognized a few people, but didn't want to completely intrude so she headed for a table that was empty and hoped that someone would join her in time.

Now standing in the classroom, the Hufflepuff looked up at the board and read it what it said. So they'd have sit in groups for today. That seemed alright, except where to sit? Maybe alone, and then wait for someone to come? But who would come? Probably not Angelo ,her boyfriend, he was too busy to come to these things. Hmm..Nessie's lips formed a pout.
Where to sit? Where to sit?
There was a spot! Renesmee then saw the Ravenclaw prefect sitting with some other boy. They would't mind right? She hoped not. The badger gave a small nod to Professor Schirmer and then walked over to where Louisa and whoever this boy, were sitting. She put on a small smile. "Mind if I sit with you?" she asked them both a little shyly.

Whaaat? She came back just for todaaaay? Why?
...
So Nora could be sad about it. That's why.
Focusing on Ms Schirmer's question, Nora raised her hand to answer. Or at least attempt to. "Isn't it something like... medicine and chemistry from a very long time ago?" Wait... didn't the alchemists make the Philosopher's Stone? Hmmm?
THERE IT WAS! The bowing from Kurumi. That will always make her feel extra special, hence why her smile brightened even more, if possible, at the sight of this. Kurumi was nice to have around for sure. Plus, she was a Prefect, she ought to be smart, right? Right.
Not that Kate mattered much.
And someone else asked Miss Popular (aka. Kurumi) to sit down? Well, yes, by all means, the girl could join them, she only asked Kurumi so Kate didn't make any other reply other than giving the young one a wide smile.
Jezzabelle gave a small smile, "Kate." Her smile faltered a bit and the light that usually shined in her eyes went out but she quickly regained her composure and said, "I prefer Jezzabelle. Thank you for asking." She might have been smiling but the light it was gone. She turned her attention to the Professor who had called attention to the classroom.

First I'd like to say that Introducing Alchemy is difficult to do in one lesson, so we WILL be moving rather fast, and you'll need to do further research in your own time if you think it is a subject that will interest you." She explained.
"I'm not yet going to ask you WHAT Alchemy is, instead I'm going to begin with another question. Does anyone know, or think they know, what the purpose of Alchemy is? What are the goals of the Alchemist?" She paused.
"Its alright if you don't know an answer, as long as you take notes and listen. I'll be sure to clarify as I go."
OOC: Class has started, you guys know the drill post as if you were already here -no late arrivals. Points will be given for active and realistic participation, that means if your charrie doesn't know an answer you can still earn points by RPing them listening or taking notes or being entirely baffled by everything 'cos Alchemy is totes overwhelming and all. There'll be a few hours to respond to this first question
The purpose of Alchemy? There was one thing he remembered about it which likely caught his interest in the fist place. Up goes his hand. "Ancient alchemysts had a goal-- its to create what they call the Philosopher's Stone-- its said to make any base mineral like lead into precious metals like gold or silver and even hold the secret to rejuvenation and immortality."

Thinking about what she had read, she slowly raised her hand. "Simply isn't the purpose to transmute common metals to more noble metals like gold and the creation of a panacea?" She had remembered there being a mention of something else in her past reading, but she didn't want to risk sounding like she was a know-it-all or being complete wrong as well.

Yep. Kurumi was already fighting with herself in her head about the subject since the only things she knew were from fantasy books. She glanced sideways at Lewis for a moment, wondering what sort of information he had read about and now sort of wished that somehow the subject had come up in conversation. Not that Alchemy was something that would have come up in the first place. Maybe it would have if they had discussed Potions for long enough, but Kurumi always sort of tried to change subjects when Potions was involved. Or Flying. Or Quidditch.
Turning her attention back to Professor Schirmer, Kurumi was cocking her head to the side again and rubbing the back of her neck nervously. She didn't like not knowing anything about a subject. It felt weird. Slowly, she raised her hand and ventured to go the route of her books and comics...which may or may not have any real fact to them. "I've read....that some of the objectives of Alchemy, and Alchemists, were to turn base metals into noble ones...as well as sought to make the Elixir of Life...or the Philosopher's Stone." She lowered her hand slightly and felt rather sheepish about her answer since, well, she really just didn't know anything. "Alchemists seem, at least from what I understand," which was very little, "to have a great deal of knowledge in many fields and sort of wanted to bring the universe together, unite it, with knowledge."
Her hand? Yeah, it was all the way back on the table. In fact, it was UNDER the table now and on her lap.

Belle listened to the Professor's question. She wasn't really sure what Alchemy was but at least she can guess. "Professor isn't Alchemy a study of some type of science used back in the medieval times?" She asked unsure if she was right.
Zhenya wasn't so sure about this seminar but she knew she would find it interesting. She walked in and saw who it was!!
"Hello, err, professor," she said. Was she still professor? Well she could t very well change her title.
She took a seat on a table and waited for people to arrive.
Desiree was in.. Charms? No this was Alchemy. Professor Schirmer had thrown her off, plus she wasn't really all that use to going to class after her term home-schooling in New Zealand.
The third year had smiled at her former Charms teacher and was now sitting at a table with Zhenya. "Hey!" she said quietly as class was about to start. She was actually glad to be back in class, which was surprising, even for her. She had had enough surfing, swimming, and tanning. Wow had she really just thought that?

She focused her attention back on the Professor, eager to start learning. But unsurprisingly the first thing was a question. Great. Which was fine except she had almost no clue what Alchemy was. Really she should know.. but as the Professor said, this was an advanced course.
Soo what was the purpose of Alchemy? She took out a quill and parchment scribbling it down. She looked over at Zhenya with a questioning look. She'd feel better if her friend was as lost as her.
But suddenly her hand raised almost of its own will, seemingly eager to pitch in after so many months. She was shocked when the teacher called on her, as she hadn't planned on answering, but quickly threw out something, "Oh, um, the purpose of Alchemy is generally to change ordinary metals into more extraordinary ones, right?" where did that come from, and why did she rhyme? Eh, well apparently she knew something.

The purpose of Alchemy? Emmanuelle had no clue what, exactly alchemy was even. By the sounds of it, her classmates weren't exactly sure either. What with their wild guesses and everything. Instead of joining the madness, she sat and listened to everyone's guesses and waited for the professor to explain.

Nerida sat in awe, she knew tons of things about alchemy but it was like the fairytale Alchemy. Should she say those things even though it would make her look weird...But then again she did read that book out of curiosity in the library on Alchemy. What did it say the purpose was again? oh yes, thats right. She raised her hand and said Erm, the purpose of Alcehmy is to turn base metals into one of the noble metals most likely gold or silver.
Now the goals, it said something like that in the book right? Something about a panacea. Think Nerida, you know this, your a Ravenclaw, be smart! She spoke once more a bit more confident then the first time she answered the Professor's question A alchemist goals are to create a panacea, which will cure all diseases and to also create a universal solvent, and to turn base metals into the noble metals.
She quickly put her hand back down, right then and there every one could tell Nerida was a nerd.

Ira beamed brightly. Yes! This was going to be an interesting seminar.
But hr smile waned a bit as Professor Schirmer began. Purpose of alchemy? Huh? Meaning why was alchemy practiced? Of course it was done to turn metals to gold right? That is.. to make things more valuable. And she had also read something about the elixir of life being prepared, but Ira didn't know the details.
Still, not wanting to just sit back all quietly, she raised her hand up and answered, "Professor... the purpose of Alchemy is.. I think, to make things more valuable" That was what Ira thought at least, "I mean, in Alchemy, common metals are turned into precious metals like gold right?" That was the materialistic gain at least.. "Generally Mercury is turned into gold I think."
Saying so, Ira was about to sit back again, when she suddenly remembered something she had vaguely read before, "And Professor, it is focused on perfection, immortality and liberation" If seen on the spiritual or non-materialistic side. She had read alchemy being useful in preparation of herbal medicines and such, but didn't know much about it herself.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
"This is going to be interesting,'' Jory thought. He pondered on the question first, not wanting to say anything stupid, then raising his hand, he said "The goal of alchemy is to change base metals to gold, silver or even the Elixir of Life so there can be immortality.''

Dylan was beyond pleased at seeing their old Charm's Professor upon arrival...but he was even more excited about what she was going to be teaching them.
Alchemy.
*mental fist-pumping*
He'd been curious about the particular field for years...but had somehow always let it slip his mind whenever he had a free minute to look something up or properly research. This was not to say, however, that he didn't know anything at all...He'd read a few things, nothing too enlightening, of course.
So, sitting here now, the Slytherin would offer what he did know and remember. *some hand-raising going on* "The only thing I can remember about the subject was that Alchemists wanted to reach Spiritual Perfection..." Dylan wasn't 100% comfortable with the answer. It had been a few years since he'd read that book in his mother's office...but bleh.
It was something to contribute to the discussion...
Soooo many books had been written about Alchemy and Alchemists in the Muggle world. So many of Chelle's favourite books, indeed. This was one question Chelle had no problem answering. Her hand shot up in the air.
"Professor, Alchemy has varied uses. It can be used to convert stuff into precious metals such as gold and silver. Alchemists also spend a lot of time looking for ways to make the Elixir of Life through Alchemy," Chelle replied. After a short pause, she continued, "Many years ago, a famous Alchemist, Nicholas Flamel, was known to be in possession of the Philosopher's Stone and was a few hundred years old, or so I have read."

It was a bit weird that Professor Schirmer was teaching them alchemy. Jonathan was just used seeing her as their Charms teacher, but overall he's still happy that she is the lecturer to this seminar. Jonathan was taking down notes and listening to her about this. Jonathan is not familiar with Alchemy but he has heard about them, once or twice and that was it. Nothing too grand when it came to explanations and stories about them too.
Introduction to Alchemy. The word just seems interesting, that's why Jonathan was eager enough to attend the seminar in the first place. When the professor asked the most basic question: what the purpose of Alchemy is? What are the goals of the Alchemist? Jonathan looked confused at first as his brain dashed for some answers to this.
. . .
yeah, he has no clue at all. He did look at the people who were answering. Seems they know a lot about it.

Surely they wouldn't be able to learn everything about Alchemy in ONE seminar... and it was all so complex and full of details. How would it be possible to learn ANYTHING in ONE seminar anyways?? That made Sophie even more excited for it.
She entered the room and looked around, There were a lot of people int there already! That would be fun. GAAAASP! Professor Schirmeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!!! Sophie smiled widely at the woman who had taught her the very first spell she had ever cast! And Sophie loved Charms, so that meant a lot. Buuuuuut Sophie knew how professor Schirmer was, so she just waved happily at the witch. "Hi, professor Schirmer! Welcome back!" And she turned around to find herself a seat.
THEODORE! She rushed towards her little friend. "Hey, Theodore! Long time no see!" She said sitting down next to him. All these classes and homework were keeping Sophie from seeing all of her friends! She didn't like that a lot, but what could she do?

As Theodore's eyes danced around the room, he felt himself getting a bit dizzy. Were they wandering too much? Or was he ill? Eggggggghhhhhh..... Anyway... back to reality. There was Sophie!
"Haaaaaaai, Sophie!" He said quietly, cos Theo hated chatting in classes. It was scary. Where had SHE been lately? Hmmm? Before he could ask, the lesson was beginning. Could they touch the stuffs now?
He really wasn't sure about what Alchemy was. Only small things he had heard here and there.
The boy sheepishly raised his hand, "I always thought Alchemists made medicine?" Like, in the olden days, though. Obviously they had scientists for all of that now, so Alchemists totally lost all their jobs.
He was totally right. The boy was sure.

Smiling at her little friend, Sophie giggled at his few words. She had noticed he didn't like talking in class. She wasn't sure whether it was because he didn't want to bother the progress of the lessons or because he was actually afraid of the professors.
Anyway, she was happy to see professor Schrimer again. She had always liked her classes. Not that she didn't like the new professor's lessons, but still. Professor Schirmer was cool and Sophie liked her.
She didn't know much about Alchemy, though. If she knew anything at all. Hm... maybe she could guess? It wouldn't kill her, right? "Alchemy is like... some sort of... Wizards Chemistry?" Or shomething like that. Or nothing like that at all. Oh, what did she know?? Meh.

Aha, and now the lesson was beginning. Paulie reached down into his bag and, after grabbing a few sheets of parchment, he retrieved his quill and ink as well. He subconsciously traced circles onto his table with the feathery tip of his quill while he listened to Professor Schirmer pose her first questions: what was the purpose of alchemy? the goals of alchemists?
He raised his quill into the air slightly, and when the student before him was finished speaking, he put in his two cents. "Alchemy is used to cure diseases, I think. And, uh.. if I'm not mistaken, I think it's involved in the whole 'elixir of life' thing." He paused a moment for thought, then added. "I think Dumbledore had a bit of interest in Alchemy, didn't he?" Seeing as some other students had mentioned Nicolas Flamel. At least, he thought he read somewhere that Dumbledore was an alchemist of sorts..

Waiting was boring. Especially now that he had checked out almost every thing on his desk. Daichi let out a small sigh before moving his head to look somewhere else. As he looked around the classroom, his eyes landed on the guy with the many names. What was his name again? Although he couldn't hear them from where he was seated but judging by the way the other boy with the Gryffindor badge walked away and Daichi had the feeling that the older Slytherin was without a partner again. Following his hunch, the fourth year stood up from his place and walked towards him.
"Got ditched didn't you?" he grinned playfully as he looked down at the Snake from behind his glasses "You want to partner up with us?" he asked, pointing his finger towards his future girlfrie--whatthe? Indy.

Oh...so.. she wasn't coming back?
Well, maybe he just had to except that. It still wasn't cool though.
As the door shut, Daichi quickly sat down in one of the empty chairs. A curious expression played on his features as he placed his elbows on his desk and rested his chin on his hand. When he had first heard about the lesson he thought that Alchemy was food. But maybe that had been because he was hungry during that time... As the question came, he was surprised how a few people could answer it. And he wondered which one of them was right. Personally, Daichi had no idea so instead of rising his hand he picked up his Fwooper quill that Kurumi had bought for him and as his eyes found the Prefect sitting with another group he smiled a little. If she looked his way he would wave with his new awesome quill..hehe.

It was Professor Schirmer, so Stella wasn't about to risk angering her by talking. Even if people had still been filing in when Paulie had appeared at her table. She'd given him a smile and a nod, though, as she'd taken some parchment out for notes and brushed her fingers against Oberon, still inside her school bag even two terms later. Class would start, and she could always talk with him later. Plus, he was Head Boy, so he should understand why she wasn't speaking. Her attention was almost wholly on the former Charms professor, and she'd gotten her quill ready as the lecture had started, pleased by the response she'd gotten to her greeting.
"The goal of the alchemist is to separate objects or even themselves from what connects it to the world, elevate whatever it is to the purest and most perfect state. Creating the philosopher's stone to turn base metals to gold, creating the elixir of life to gain immortality, or even gaining spiritual perfection through enlightenment," she said as the question was posed, raising her free hand even as she started writing with the other. At least the books she'd read had told her that much, although she wasn't entirely sure how it was accomplished. Or exactly why gold was considered the purest metal, but then perhaps that was going to b e what they were going to learn in this lesson.

Someone looked enthusiastic today. "Good morning, Miss Castell."
"Good Morning." Althea greeted the Slytherin girl.
"And you, Miss Hollingberry." Althea smiled encouragingly at the prefect.
"Good Morning." Althea greeted.
Ah. A first year. "Morning." Althea smiled at the boy. Yes she was in a smiley mood. It was going to be a good day, and she was getting her pockets lined for being here. Couldn't complain really.
"The badge is a good look for you, Mr Rasting." Althea greeted. Was that stutter new?
"And you, Miss Carter." Was it just her or was she a little.... off? Oh well, Thea wasn't a counsellor. On to the Alchemy.
Aw.
Althea returned the smile. "Mr Kim, you're looking well. Good to see you."
Um.
"Miss Reed. Just for today." She smiled briefly and watched as the girl sat down.
"Thank you, Miss Bishop." Althea inclined her head gracefully.
"Good to see you too, Mr Jones." Althea smiled at the Hufflepuff.
"Good Morning." Althea greeted courteously. She didn't know who this one was. A transfer?
"And you, Mr Kobe." Thea nodded at the Gryffindor.
"Thank you, Miss Lockwood." Althea greeted.
She smiled at the Ravenclaw boy. "I'm well, Mr Watson. I hope you're continuing your extra work with charms." His enthusiasm had never gone unnoticed. "I could recommend a few books, if you like."
Hmm. Could SHE do alchemy or could people in general do alchemy? Althea smiled at the young Ravenclaw, a first year she assumed.
"Good Morning. Perhaps you'll be able to come to your own conclusion by the end of the lesson."
"Good Morning. Miss Potter, thank you for the warm welcome." Althea said to the Hufflepuff girl.
"Good Morning." Althea said with a smile.
"Hello Mr Katharos." Althea greeted and then smiled softly. "Just for today, dear."
"Hello." Althea replied.
"And you, Miss Hyde." The GOOD Hyde..
"Good Morning, Miss Talbot," Althea greeted. "Nice to see you too."
Good bloody thing that he didn't.
Good thing indeed.
"Good Morning, Mr Vanderbilt" Althea greeted.
Well that was enthusiastic.
"Hello, I have been well." She smiled at Minerva almost fondly. "I hope you're working hard in your new professor's classes." As hard as she had for Althea.
"Good Morning." Althea greeted. "I'm well. I hope you can say the same."
"Good Morning, Miss Dixon." Althea greeted, watching the girl sit down.
"And you, Miss Wilson." Althea smiled brightly at the young Gryffindor.
"Welcome." Althea said, noting the Gryffindor boy come in.
"Hello Mr Gunter." Althea greeted, happy to see the young Hufflepuff. "Its still Professor Schirmer." She assured him.
"Good Morning, Mr Neves." Althea greeted. Yes, she could say his whole name, but she wouldn't unless the young Slytherin -who somehow reminded her quite a bit of Dash- actually requested her to do so.
Oh one of her faaavourites! Not that she'd say so out loud. She smiled almost warmly at Kennedy. "Nice to see you to, Mr Escalante."
"Good Morning, Miss Greingoth." Althea greeted.
"Thank you Miss Campbell. I hope you are well." Althea replied.
"Nice to see you too, Miss Skylar." Althea greeted.
"Good Morning, dear." Althea greeted the first year. She looked enthusiastic.
"Good Morning." Althea greeted.
"Hello Miss Potter, I am doing well. I hope you can say the same." She replied to the second year.
"Alright everyone, settle down now please. Class is beginning." She flicked her wrist negligently and the door shut, and then Althea turned her attention to the students, waiting a moment to be sure she had everyone's attention before she began.
"This seminar, as you are all no doubt aware, is an introduction to Alchemy.

Alyssa listened as the other students raised their hands and gave their answers. She quickly jotted down their answers in her journal before thinking of her own answer to the question Professor Schirmer had posed.
When she thought that she had a possible answer, Alyssa raised her hand and answered,"Professor I think that the purpose of Alchemy is not only to change an ordinary metal into something more valuable like gold or silver but also to find ways of mixing substances in order to extend life or for healing "
Alyssa paused to think before answering the second part of the question. "As for the goals of an Alchemist, I guess that it would be the same as the purpose. " Alyssa paused to think how she could phrase it without going all long winded like she usually did in all her classes she attended.
"That is to not only change common metals into precious ones but also to find a cure for all diseases even death."Alyssa finished.
Jezzabelle smiled and took one of the empty chairs, "Thanks Lewis. I'm Jezzabelle." It just kept going and going and going. The list of older students she knew kept getting longer and it most certainly out weighed the list of students her own age. True, she didn't actually KNOW Lewis but she had learned his name. She fell silent not sure if she should attempt to be conversational or not.
Jezzabelle. Noted. "Nice to meet you." At least now he knew her name. In case he ever needed that. In class or something. Or during Quidditch maybe. Hang on, did she play Quidditch? Lewis smiled when the younger Gryffindor took a seat before turning his attention back to the golden haired girl Kate.

Officially meet him? Had she heard things about him already? Were they good? Because usually the only thing he'd be worried about was people telling her that he was slightly weird - which he wasn't! - but now...with all that had happened so far this year, he wasn't sure if her knowing him before meeting him was such a good thing. What if she thought he was some kind of girlfriend-stealing womanizer.
Yeah, okay, that was very unlikely.
And now she was asking him about his name? Hadn't they already talked about this? "It's Lewis." Oooh. She was concerned about spelling. "Yes. Like that. L-like how you said it before." Was that clear enough? Did she want him to write it down? "With a 'w'. And an 'e'. N-not in that order." He blushed a little at how he was sort of confusing himself now before reaching for his quill and writing his name down on his notebook. Tearing the piece with his name off, he handed it to Kate. "Here, like this." She could keep it. If she wanted to.
Though why she would want to do that, he wasn't sure.

Kurumi seemed a little...nervous. Flustered even. Lewis glanced at her out of the corner of his eyes, not really wanting to draw too much attention to them by asking her what was wrong, because 1. the lesson had started and 2. well, there were a couple of people in this class which wouldn't be too happy to see them like this. So it was probably for the best to keep quiet for now.
Instead Lewis reached for her hand which was on her lap and gave it a soft squeeze while throwing her a slightly confused look. Was something wrong? He left his hand there for the time being but raised his other one to answer the professor's question. "Well, one of the main goals was to find...like the ultimate cure for all diseases. So people can live longer...or forever even." Which sounded like quite a weird concept to him. Living forever. He wasn't sure he would want to do that. "L-like Nicolas Flamel made the Philosophers Stone." They would all know what that did, right? And how it was connected to what he said before.

"Good Morning, Miss Burton. Yes; professor is just fine." Althea smiled at the Slytherin.
Um.

Zhenya didn't raise her hand or say anything. She had absolutely no idea what Alchemy was, what it was used for, HOW it was used... she was totally clueless. She pulled out some parchment and her quill with some ink and started writing down everything people were saying. Whether they were right or wrong, it didn't matter, she would cross it off. She was interested in just learning WHAT it was, and she knew she would leave the class knowing that much at least.*

"Hey Desiree," Zhenya whispered, waving to her friend who was at her table anyway. She was SO HAPPY Desiree was back at Hogwarts.
