It was actually quite nice being able to return to Hogwarts to teach a special class; Althea Schirmer, new Department Head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes did miss her former students at least a little bit. Most of them. Some of them. She did hope her particular favourites would be interested in attending, even if she wouldn't acknowledge who they were out loud. Not charms of course, rather she was presenting an introduction to Alchemy, one of the subjects rather close to her heart as a metal charmer.
She rather hoped that it might just encourage an interest amongst some of the students. Usually Alchemy lessons were only offered to 6th and 7th years, but Gaellen had asked her to make the material as accessible as possible to all ages, and she'd done her best though she intended to make it clear that if anyone did not understand anything, they should look into it further in their own time, she was only tasked with introducing key concepts, not ensuring that the slower children knew the subject inside out.
And really there was only so much you could do in one lesson.
Tables had been set up in the observatory rather similarly to what might be found in the potions classroom, except that there was an array of unusual equipment on each table -no two tables had precisely the same item, though all seemed similar somehow, or perhaps like they were made for similar purposes, or to be used together. Some appeared to be in miniature, as a representative of what it might truly be, just for demonstration purposes.

"Welcome everyone." Althea greeted as the students began to file in. "Remember this is an optional lesson. I don't much mind if you choose not to stay, but I will see to it that anyone who disrupts this seminar will lose house points, so if you choose to leave, do so quietly." And she was sure the great majority of them knew she wasn't to be trifled with - if she said points might be lost, well, they might just.
"I'm Althea Schirmer, most of you know me as your former Charms professor, But I am now Department Head of Accidents and Catastrophes at the British Ministry of Magic, and today I'm here to introduce you all to the field of Alchemy, which I studied alongside Experimental Charms, Medieval Charms and Metal Charming during my university career. You may still address me as Professor Schirmer. We will begin in a few moments."
----------------------- OOC: This is your first seminar for the term! Totally optional to attend, all students may join in except mine. It will be around 20 hours before the class actually begins, feel free to post arriving and settling in until then, and remember that your charrie is being watched, so don't be bad and stuff. It will be open for 1 week.

My posts will be indexed in this first post, and anyone can PM or VM me if they aren't sure how to jump in.
Don't forget, you're encouraged to RP your charrie not knowing things if you don't think that they would. As long as they're listening and taking notes and being engaged in the lesson, you won't be penalised and will still earn points. Its up to you what you think your character would already know.

Activity: "What I want you to do, is have one person from your table stand up, and I will call on that person and explain what the instrument on their table is and what it does. Then as a class, you'll each look through your symbol sheets and see if you can identify related symbols. You may have noticed the symbol lists aren't in English, but you are all familiar enough with Latin by now that you should be able to deduce which is correct. So one person from each group please stand up and we'll get started."

1d) Name one piece of Alchemical equipment they used, or guess at a piece of Alchemical equipment they used, and explain why you think they would have used it.
1e) Find an interesting fact about your chosen Alchemist to share. You can present this as a short essay or address the questions seperately, its up to you.
2) Short answer questions
2a) Choose any one of your other class subjects and explain how it is linked to Alchemy. (2 points)
2b) According to the Alchemist Michael Maier, who were the four women who knew how to make the philosopher's stone? (1 point)
2c)Choose any two symbols from your hand outs, investigate what they mean, and explain how they are used in Alchemy (2 points)
Please note that up to 5 points extra credit may be given for this assignment for thoughtful or outstanding answers, particularly where answers remain concise, informative, and original.

Sierra couldn't believe she was taking this optional extra class. No. Not at all. It was her OWL year, though, and she sort of thought it'd be bad if there was an Alchemy question on a test, and she hadn't a clue as to what the answer was. Stepping into the class and seeing Prof...errr, Miss? Anyway, Schirmer, she suddenly felt this weird sense of alternate reality.
This woman had once been her Charms professor, and then she'd come to eat one night at her house, and now here she was standing in front of a class about to teach Alchemy. Wandering throughout the room, Sierra passed by the woman and decided to speaking. "Hello,...." she said. She hesitated, trying to think of what to call her, and decided in the end to just say hello.
After a particularly effort-filled journey to the Astronomy Tower, Theo needed a few seconds to regain his breath. He had never been up here before, but woooah, it was kinda pretty! He didn't know what Alchemy was, though.
Sounded a bit clever for his liking.
As he entered and sat down at an empty table, his eyes travelled to the notice on the board. Do not touch the stuff, again.

"Hello, professor." He said, eyes wandering elsewhere.
Alchemy reminded Sophie of her dad for no particular reason. Maybe because that sounded smart and her dad was smart! Sophie was sure that her father would be proud of her if she went to this seminar, and it did sound interesting, so why not?
Aaaaall the way from the kitchen levels, Sophie wondered what they would be talking about. Surely they wouldn't be able to learn everything about Alchemy in ONE seminar... and it was all so complex and full of details. How would it be possible to learn ANYTHING in ONE seminar anyways?? That made Sophie even more excited for it.
She entered the room and looked around, There were a lot of people int there already! That would be fun. GAAAASP! Professor Schirmeeeeeeeeeeeeer!!!! Sophie smiled widely at the woman who had taught her the very first spell she had ever cast! And Sophie loved Charms, so that meant a lot. Buuuuuut Sophie knew how professor Schirmer was, so she just waved happily at the witch. "Hi, professor Schirmer! Welcome back!" And she turned around to find herself a seat.
THEODORE! She rushed towards her little friend. "Hey, Theodore! Long time no see!" She said sitting down next to him. All these classes and homework were keeping Sophie from seeing all of her friends! She didn't like that a lot, but what could she do?

Oh Yeah, He's been a good owl. The other owls keep him happyand away from Oakey. It wasn't that his owl wasn't a bad owl, Valentine was just on edge... a lot, and always stuck around on top of his head when he was nearby.Note to self: Visit Valentine next time you're free to do so.

Alchemy. What an interesting topic for a seminar. Selina had never ever really considered alchemy as a real subject before, but if a seminar was being held on the subject she supposed that it was legitimate enough for the Hogwarts staff to approve. As she walked into the classroom she saw a very familiar face looking out across the hoard of students. It was Professor Schirmer! B-but she had left Hogwarts last term; what in Merlin's name was she doing back?
With a small smile on her face, she said, "Good day Professor Schirmer. It's nice to see you again." Then she nodded her head and went off to find herself a seat for the lesson.

Selina had never ever really considered alchemy as a real subject before, but if a seminar was being held on the subject she supposed that it was legitimate enough for the Hogwarts staff to approve. As she walked into the classroom she saw a very familiar face looking out across the hoard of students. It was Professor Schirmer! B-but she had left Hogwarts last term; what in Merlin's name was she doing back?
With a small smile on her face, she said, "Good day Professor Schirmer. It's nice to see you again." Then she nodded her head and went off to find herself a seat for the lesson.
That was good to hear, no misbehaving owl meant no more cuts and bruises at least from the fault of the bird. And so he simply nodded in response to his news. Gideon looked over as Oakey called a girl over, not reconizing the name until he spotted who it was in reference to. His friend and fellow Hufflepuff turned out to be the girl from Herbology class last year. Oh goody. Hopefully nothing like last year would happen in this class though in retrospect they were apparently going to be working together anyway so she couldn't interrupt this time.
"Hello," he greeted simply meeting her gaze as she joined them. It was then when he heard a very familiar voice say hello to their professor...well more likely just a guest instructor technically during this lesson. Under normal circumstances Gideon would have asked her to join them as well without a second thought, especially seeing as Kurumi's group was full, but they weren't on normal terms. It took some nerves but finally he spoke up to get her attention.
"Um...Selina. do ye want to join us?" he asked figuring at the very least she'd accept because she didn't have many other options.

There was a spot! Renesmee then saw the Ravenclaw prefect sitting with some other boy. They would't mind right? She hoped not. The badger gave a small nod to Professor Schirmer and then walked over to where Louisa and whoever this boy, were sitting. She put on a small smile. "Mind if I sit with you?" she asked them both a little shyly.

Louisa's eyes were narrowed at the small group that had the certain yellow and red people. They seemed... content. Why it bugged her, Louisa had no idea really. Aaaand yet another companion. OH! This one she knew closely. "Oh, hi Nessie. Yeah, I'm fine with it." She glanced at the boy to see if he had other plans for the empty seat or not.
"Hello Prefect Louisa" he called her Prefect again. Alas old habits die hard. He looked up at the new voice that joined their table. The Prefect called her Nessie "Hello Nessie, I'm Vickers." he introduced himself, then saw Louisa's glance "Sure I'm good with her joining us." he nodded then scooted over to give the Hufflepuff some room on their table.

Isidora didn't have much of an interest in Alchemy until she spotted the notice on the notice board in her common room. Honestly it still wasn't a great deal of one, but it was enough to have her attend the lesson.
Plus it was SO CLOSE to her common room!

The first year bound in and picked a seat with the most interesting of items. She eyed them with glowing interest. "Hi professor!" She waved at the woman and swung out her legs. She was getting sooo good at waiting for lessons to start.

Lily rushed up to the astronomy tower so as to not be late to the first seminar. As she reached the door, she made sure to smile and brushed off any fuzz that may have gotten stuck on the way from the common room to the tower.
The second year briefly paused at the door before entering and bursting into a great big grin. "Hello Professor Schirmer. I hope you are doing well." That had to be a surprise. The redheaded second year hadn't known that their charms professor from the previous year would be coming back...especially after what had happened at the closing feast.
But seeing as how the class would probably be starting soon, Lily looked around the room for a seat.

Minerva thought she was sitting next to someone, but they got up and went over with someone else. Shrug, oh well. She was sitting all alone and wondered if she could join a group. Looking around she seemed to noticed that many people were already sitting with others, so she wasn't sure there was a place for her.

Dora was so verrrrry focused on her items, looking and no touching, that she didn't notice the slightly older Ravenclaw approach her until she spoke.
"Yeah! Sure! I'm Dora. Isidora."

Maybe she was interested in this alchemy stuff for reals? Didn't matter to Isidora, she just kept swinging her feet and looking at the items on the table, not completely ignoring the other girl.

Char was without a partner, she did not know anyone yet. So the new girl looked around the room to see if there was anyone else waiting to find a group.
As Ella pulled her quill and parchment from her bag, she heard a familiar voice. Looking up, she spotted Nate. Hey, where had he been? She hadn't seen him around the common room much these days. "Hey Nate, how's it going?" She asked cheerfully, placing her things on the table. "It is nice to see her again." The second year agreed with a smile.
Nate pulled out his own parchment, quill, and ink as he was listening to Ella's question. "Not much. Just the occasional bump in the night. Windows rattling. Drawers opening. The normal. how's your summer been?" Nate replied with a cheerful smile. Then he watched Min come over. "I'm good how are you Min?" He replied with another bright smile.

Lana looked at the items on the table and tilted her head in thought. Hearing a voice, she blinked and looked up to see a Gryffindor that looked about her age and smiled. "Sure, the more the merrier." She had almost lost hope that she would have a partner for the lesson. Motioning for him to talk a seat, she turned and offered her hand in greeting. "I'm Lana."
"Thanks!" Chris said, beaming as he took a seat. "I'm Christopher, but you can call me Chris!" Lana, that's a nice name, Chris thought.

A grin had to be one of the first things that the girl saw on Lily's face... because it was plastered there as soon as she had seen who the Professor was. "Uh.. Thanks! I'm Lily. Nice to meet you." Carefully, the second year placed her bag on the ground and took a seat at the table. "So do you prefer Dora or Isidora?" You know... so that Lily could call her by her preferred name.

Selina was looking around the room for a group to join when she spotted Kurumi over in the corner in Lewis' group. As much as she adored her best friend, she was not sure that she wanted to be centralized in that little corner of tension at the moment. Lewis was a nice guy and all, it was nothing against him personally, but she wasn't exactly sure what was going on there so perhaps avoiding them... especially being the person who knew the most about their situation would be wise.
She waved to show her friend that she was not purposefully avoiding her, but then she heard another voice ask her to come and sit if she so pleased. She wondered if it would be rude to pretend like she did not hear him, but she was going to have to return to the real world eventually. So she threw on an awkward and shy smile and nodded, "Um yeah sure... why not."
Slowly she approached the table and sat down beside Minerva. Keeping her eyes down on the table she finally said, "Oh, erm, hello everyone." No need to be rude.

Ira looked around, and then mentally slapped herself on realizing that they had to sit in groups! She had really not read the rules on entering the class.
Looking around, she wondered who to join.. Finally, she decided to join two girls nearby, sitting almost next to her. One was Lilly, whom she had met last term, sitting with another who Ira wasn't really familiar with.
"Heya guys! Hi Lilly!" Ira went over and said to the two girls, "Can I be in your group?" And looking over the other girl, Ira introduced herself, "I'm Ira... and you?"
