It was actually quite nice being able to return to Hogwarts to teach a special class; Althea Schirmer, new Department Head of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes did miss her former students at least a little bit. Most of them. Some of them. She did hope her particular favourites would be interested in attending, even if she wouldn't acknowledge who they were out loud. Not charms of course, rather she was presenting an introduction to Alchemy, one of the subjects rather close to her heart as a metal charmer.
She rather hoped that it might just encourage an interest amongst some of the students. Usually Alchemy lessons were only offered to 6th and 7th years, but Gaellen had asked her to make the material as accessible as possible to all ages, and she'd done her best though she intended to make it clear that if anyone did not understand anything, they should look into it further in their own time, she was only tasked with introducing key concepts, not ensuring that the slower children knew the subject inside out.
And really there was only so much you could do in one lesson.
Tables had been set up in the observatory rather similarly to what might be found in the potions classroom, except that there was an array of unusual equipment on each table -no two tables had precisely the same item, though all seemed similar somehow, or perhaps like they were made for similar purposes, or to be used together. Some appeared to be in miniature, as a representative of what it might truly be, just for demonstration purposes.
She had set up a board behind her, on which was the following, charmed to scroll across the top:
Quote:
The Goals of the Alchemist
--find the panacea
--find the alkahest
--turning things into gold (chrysopoeia) and other noble metals
Magnum Opus (The Great Work, or finding the Philosopher's Stone) nigredo-a blackening or melanosis albedo -a whitening or leucosis citrinitas - a yellowing or xanthosis rubedo - a reddening, purpling, or iosis
Definitions Alkahest - Believed by Paracelsus to be the Philosophers Stone, or an element of its creation. This is a hypothetical universal solvent, having the power to dissolve every other substance, including gold.
Azoth - This serves as the essential agent of alchemical transformation, and embodies the concept of the main goals in Alchemy it is a possible universal medicine, universal solvent, or Elixir of Life. It is a name for Mercury as cardinal principle of Alchemy.
Chrysopoeia - A symbolic representation of the Philosophers Stone, chrysopoeia means transmutation into gold, from the Greek khrusōn, 'gold', and poiēin, 'to make'.
Panacea - also called the pancrest, or Panakeia in Greek, is named for the Greek Goddess of universal remedy, she supposedly had a magical medicinal substance which could cure all ills. It is a remedy that is supposed to cure all diseases and prolong life indefinitely.
Solve et Coagula - 'Separate and Join Together' (or dissolve and coagulate')
Spagyrics -the production of herbal medicines using alchemical techniques such as fermentation, distillation and the extraction of mineral components from the ash of a plant. Greek for 'separate and recombine'
The Cardinal Principles of Alchemy The Alchemical trinity of principles.

"Welcome everyone." Althea greeted as the students began to file in. "Remember this is an optional lesson. I don't much mind if you choose not to stay, but I will see to it that anyone who disrupts this seminar will lose house points, so if you choose to leave, do so quietly." And she was sure the great majority of them knew she wasn't to be trifled with - if she said points might be lost, well, they might just.
"I'm Althea Schirmer, most of you know me as your former Charms professor, But I am now Department Head of Accidents and Catastrophes at the British Ministry of Magic, and today I'm here to introduce you all to the field of Alchemy, which I studied alongside Experimental Charms, Medieval Charms and Metal Charming during my university career. You may still address me as Professor Schirmer. We will begin in a few moments."
----------------------- OOC: This is your first seminar for the term! Totally optional to attend, all students may join in except mine. It will be around 20 hours before the class actually begins, feel free to post arriving and settling in until then, and remember that your charrie is being watched, so don't be bad and stuff. It will be open for 1 week.
Additional updates regarding when the next posts can be expected will be found in my most recent post.
My posts will be indexed in this first post, and anyone can PM or VM me if they aren't sure how to jump in.
Don't forget, you're encouraged to RP your charrie not knowing things if you don't think that they would. As long as they're listening and taking notes and being engaged in the lesson, you won't be penalised and will still earn points. Its up to you what you think your character would already know.
INDEX OF POSTS AND QUESTIONS Question One: What is the purpose of Alchemy? What are the goals of the Alchemist? asked here ----- answered here Question Two: What do you know about the cardinal principles of Alchemy, salt, sulphur and mercury? What are they? What do they mean? asked here ----- answered here Question Three: What connections can you think of between Astrology and Alchemy? Also, if there are any questions about what has been covered so far, now is the time to ask them. asked here ----- answered here Question Four: Aside from Carl Jung and Sir Isaac Newton, who are some famous Alchemists and what are some of their achievements? asked here ----- answered here
Activity: "What I want you to do, is have one person from your table stand up, and I will call on that person and explain what the instrument on their table is and what it does. Then as a class, you'll each look through your symbol sheets and see if you can identify related symbols. You may have noticed the symbol lists aren't in English, but you are all familiar enough with Latin by now that you should be able to deduce which is correct. So one person from each group please stand up and we'll get started."
OOC: Please PM this to Tegz with your username, usernumber, house, character name and year. IE if I were submitting it I'd include:

Even though she wasn't teaching at Hogwarts any more she was still Indy's favorite teacher. Charms hadn't been the same without her here. So Indy was pretty excited that she was here. Hopefully she would kind of get the subject though, but that would just be a bonus really. The girl smiled as she wandered up to the observatory. It was nice to be up here again, she had missed it since it had been closed. Mmm. Alchemy. It could be interesting.
Ahh. There she was. Indy had to stop herself launching at the Professor. She was a big girl they didn't do that anymore. But she did want to hug the professor. She had missed her. Without really thinking about it, because really hugging Professor Schirmer probably wasn't the best of ideas, Indy was over there, and hugging the professor. Oh dear. This could really go bad. Like the professor could like kill her. Or tell her to go away. Opps. "Hi Professor..." Indy mused with a little smile, as she looked up. "I missed you..." If she was cute the professor wouldn't kill her right. "I don't like the new charms professor, she's not as good as you. Can't you come back? Please come back." Hmmm. Then she kind of stepped away. Should she sit down now?
Alchemy? To be honest, Daichi did not know what to think about it. It sounded difficult to him but he wouldn't know if he hadn't tried it right. As he entered the classroom his chocolate brown eyes behind his glasses immediately went to Indy who was...err...hugging the Professor...
"You're ...clingy..." he said to her the moment he was near the front as well and only then did he realise who the woman that was going to teach their seminar lesson , was. Ah right. Now he got why Indy had been so clingy, at the feast she had told him that she missed the old Charms professor. "Hello Professor Schirmer~" ooooh look at that! he had her name right woohoo! "Are.. " the boy bit his lower lip for a second before letting out a small sigh. "Y-You're not *really* back, right?" He had only told Indy this so far but his two favorite subjects were the professors that had left. Charms and Astronomy. Ah well, maybe the new one wasn't so bad either. She HAD given him a golden star hehe.
"oh , Indy! can i sit with you?" the Slytherin asked after a quick bow to the Professor and followed the Ravenclaw.
Glancing over her shoulder when she heard his voice, Kurumi found herself smiling sheepishly as he made his way towards the table she was sitting and only widened a bit more when he sat down next to her. "Hi," she whispered back, feeling a jolt of electricity shoot through her body when his fingers brushed over her hand. It was the little things, the small touches, those were the ones that meant the most to Kurumi...and caused her cheeks to turn an even deeper shade of pink.
Kurumi surveyed the room while Lewis unpacked, spotting Louisa giving her...a look? Kurumi slouched her shoulders a little, trying to make herself a little smaller - especially when she saw who else entered the room afterwards. Kurumi's gaze stayed there for a moment before turning forwards again before eye contact could be made. Attention back on Lewis, Kurumi couldn't help but notice the somewhat obvious air of confidence, or was it curiosity, that surrounded him. "Do you...already know a little something about the subject?" If Alchemy turned out to be anything like Potions...Kurumi was going to need a bit of tutoring after this seminar to make sure she understood all the concepts.
Lewis luckily didn't see Kurumi's blush when he touched her because he was too busy looking for his notebook and pen. He DID however catch Louisa's look which was...far from friendly. Though it wasn't exactly hostile or anything, either. No, it really wasn't much of anything. Her face was pretty much expressionless. And Lewis wasn't entirely sure if that was a good thing. It probably wasn't. Not judging by the last serious conversation they'd had anyway. He doubted she was going to give them a Congratulations greeting card.
Chewing on his lip a little, he watched the Ravenclaw take a seat before going back to looking at Kurumi again. Only his eyes fell on somebody else which caused his body to stiffen a little. Jonathan. This wasn't going to be easy, seeing each other around at school. He should probably talk to him some time. Only whenever he thought about it, he just really wanted to postpone this meeting...to...well...never. His attention was fortunately caught by Kurumi again, making him to look back at her while trying to hide all the thoughts that had just coursed through him from his face and smile at her instead. "A little...yes. It...it came up in one of the books I've read." And then he'd read about it some more in other books too.

It was fairly obvious she was joining them. Them, because her own House Prefect was there too. Louis, was he? She couldn't recall. "Good morning," she said, with a smile, as her eyes landed on the one imparting this lesson before making her way towards Kurumi and company.
"Hi Kurumi," another smile went towards the Gryffindor, "And Louis," because that was his name, no? At least it sounded like it was.
Once seated, she was extremely impressed with this woman. Like, she was incredibly awesome, wasn't she? Look at everything she's studied. No wonder everyone was missing her.
How come this girl knew his name?! He glanced at Kurumi for a brief second with his mouth slightly hanging open in surprise. That was when he happened to look at the Gryffindor's Prefect badge which made him remember that he had one of those too. In yellow though. Because he was in Hufflepuff. Just like this girl, at least judging by the color of her robes. So that was probably why she knew his name.
"H-hello." Oh, and she was joining them too? And Kurumi seemed to know her already. Somehow he REALLY needed to leave his Common Room more often. Kurumi always knew everybody it seemed and he just...knew a couple of people. Though with this one, his best chance of meeting her would have actually been IN the Common Room so. "Nice to meet you...Kate...?" That's what Kurumi had just called her, right?

Noticing the small group around Kurumi she smiled and made her way to them, "Mind if I join the group Kurumi?"
Aaaand there was another person joining their group. Or asking for permission to join anyway. Lewis remembered seeing this girl around but not knowing her name either. Okay, that didn't answer the girl's question, did it? Blushing a little he tried again, this time even gesturing towards one of the empty chairs at their table. "S-sure. The more the merrier." Or so they said. Whoever 'they' was.
Sarah worked into the observatory. She had never been there before. Nor had she been in Alchemy before, infact most young students hadn;t at her age. Yet why complain? "Hello Professor" she said. She then went to go sit at a table where another girl was.

Lana quietly made her way toward the astronomy tower and the observatory. The whole notion of taking on a special lesson had confused her last term, but seeing as she was trying to be different and not fail herself yet another year; she decided that it was mandatory for herself to do everything she could her second year.
Alchemy was something she had skimmed in her anti-social reading in the library and it had spiked her interest at least. It wouldn't hurt to learn more about it in case she did find it more interesting and might want to further her studies in the future.
Entering the observatory, she took in everything and headed for a table. Seeing her former Charms Professor, she offered a nod and smile. "Good day Professor Schirmer, it's nice to see you again," she voiced as she headed for a free table. She had recognized a few people, but didn't want to completely intrude so she headed for a table that was empty and hoped that someone would join her in time.
Silvia made her way up to the astronomy tower. It felt great to be up here again, and she wished they still had astronomy lessons this year. But she was excited for this seminar too. When Silvia had seen the sign on the noticeboard saying that there would be a seminar on alchemy, she knew she just had to be there. Alchemy sounded so exciting.
When she entered, she was glad to see who would be teaching it. "Hello Professor Schirmer. Nice to see you again." Silvia didn't know that the former charms professor knew alchemy; but then, she had only studied under her for one year and therefore didn't know her that well. Silvia took a seat at one of the desks and waited for class to begin.

As Ella pulled her quill and parchment from her bag, she heard a familiar voice. Looking up, she spotted Nate. Hey, where had he been? She hadn't seen him around the common room much these days. "Hey Nate, how's it going?" She asked cheerfully, placing her things on the table. "It is nice to see her again." The second year agreed with a smile.

There was an Alchemy seminar at Hogwarts?
Dropping whatever it was he was studying at the moment, the Ravenclaw crossed corridors and took two steps at a time towards the Astronomy tower. He entered the classroom and set his sight on someone familiar "Professor Schirmer..." surprised? yes but a good kind of surprised. well kinda. "Welcome back." He wanted to ask her what she did to his favorite Astronomy Professor, rumors being rumors and seeing what they had, or didnt have, in the current schoolyear, but he decided he should find a seat first.
Ah, theres one next to the Ravenclaw Prefect.
He slid into a seat and gave his fellow Claw a polite smile, then prepped his notes-taking stuff on his desk.

Minerva walked up to the observatory and stopped dead in her tracks. Her face lit up, was that...no... yes it is " PROFESSOR SCHIRMER!!! Belle walked into the room ready to learn Alchemy. She was excited to study this subject this term. "Hello Professor! How are you doing?" Annabelle said with a nice warm smile. After she said hello, she went to find a seat in the back of the classroom.

Jezzabelle smiled and took one of the empty chairs, "Thanks Lewis. I'm Jezzabelle." It just kept going and going and going. She fell silent not sure if she should attempt to be conversational or not.

She Can't Help Herself. Her Mind Won't Slow Down. Watch Out! There's A NEW Ravenclaw In Town.
Louisa yet again felt smug as she simply left her common room and a few stairs up she was in the Astronomy tower, for the first seminar of the term. If her boyfriend wasn't punched hard in the face, she would've hummed to herself and been in a good mood. Being the case, she merely walked into the class and took her bag off her shoulder. "Hi professor Schirmer, good to see you again." And really this tone was the best Louisa could muster at the day.
Moving on toward the seats she... saw a certain Huffie & Gryffie... side by side. Happy. Louisa's face stayed blank as she saw them but she did feel slightly uncomfortable? Since she, y'know, scolded the girl and made the boy even more awkward. The Ravenclaw shifted her eyes off of them and threw her body on one of the random seats.
This class seemed like it was something you had to attend, if you chose not to, you'd clearly be missing out. A little over excited, Renesmee walked into the classroom. Even though Ness wasn't a huge fan of astrology, it still felt good to be in the observatory again. The red head was fairly keen on learing about Alchemy though, it seemed interesting yet it looked difficult too and Nessie didn't know much about it at all. But that was the exact reason she was here, to learn more and surely with Professor Schirmer here, it would be an outstanding lesson.
Now standing in the classroom, the Hufflepuff looked up at the board and read it what it said. So they'd have sit in groups for today. That seemed alright, except where to sit? Maybe alone, and then wait for someone to come? But who would come? Probably not Angelo ,her boyfriend, he was too busy to come to these things. Hmm..Nessie's lips formed a pout.
Where to sit? Where to sit?
There was a spot! Renesmee then saw the Ravenclaw prefect sitting with some other boy. They would't mind right? She hoped not. The badger gave a small nod to Professor Schirmer and then walked over to where Louisa and whoever this boy, were sitting. She put on a small smile. "Mind if I sit with you?" she asked them both a little shyly.
Alchemy? That seemed like an interesting subject! Though all Ira knew about it was that alchemy meant turning things into gold. And that was such an important, or ratehr wonderful science, right?
And she had heard that Professor Schirmer was to take this seminar. And yup, Ira did like her. So Ira trudged, with her bag on her shoulders, towards the Astronomy tower, excited for the seminar on alchemy.
Smiling, she made her way in and greeted her former Charms Professor, "Hello Professor Schirmer! Nice to see you again!" Yup, it really was.
Dropping whatever it was he was studying at the moment, the Ravenclaw crossed corridors and took two steps at a time towards the Astronomy tower. He entered the classroom and set his sight on someone familiar "Professor Schirmer..." surprised? yes but a good kind of surprised. well kinda. "Welcome back." The red head was fairly keen on learing about Alchemy though, it seemed interesting yet it looked difficult too and Nessie didn't know much about it at all.
Louisa's eyes were narrowed at the small group that had the certain yellow and red people. They seemed... content. Why it bugged her, Louisa had no idea really. It shouldn't even matter, especially that Jonathan himself walked into the classroom and oh-so-casually took a seat. No drama or looks given. How cool! The Ravenclaw sighed to herself and rubbed her temples trying to send some it-is-not-of-your-business vibes inside her head, when someone slipped into the seat next to her.
She lifted her eyes and spotted the fellow Ravenclaw. The Prefect knew him, not as a friend but as a comrade in the library. And classes. She returned his smile and added, "Hi," she greeted the silent boy and watched him get his stuff out. She was intrigued to look closer and see what he uses for taking-noted but they were interrupted.
Aaaand yet another companion. OH! This one she knew closely. "Oh, hi Nessie. Yeah, I'm fine with it." She glanced at the boy to see if he had other plans for the empty seat or not.

Christopher walked into the room and took a seat. He had seen this seminar posted on the Gryffindor notice board in the Common Room, and was interested as soon as he had read it! Chris looked around at the others around him, and saw a few other Gryffindors he recognized from the Common Room. He saw some others from the other houses as well.
Chris smiled to himself and muttered to himself, "This couldn't be better; today's even my birthday!" Today, November 8th, 2077, he was 14 years old. He sat wondering if he should go talk to somebody; maybe he could make a new friend... He was at a table all alone...
Mom says I have no sense of direction, so I packed my bags and right.
Oakey entered into the Astronomy Tower prepared to learn all he could about Alchemy. This seminar would hopefully be lots of fun, He looked past the seminar instructor and at the moving words behind her. Don't touch stuff and sit no more than five to a table, GOT IT. Wait! Who was the Instructor, she seemed very familiar...Professor Schirmer! He said aloud to confirm to himself that it was really his former Charms Professor. I-I mean, hello Professor Schirmer...or is it just Ms. Schirmer now?Or was she a Missus? He wasn't sure what to call her, she wasn't technically their Professor anymore but she was teaching them again...This was all very confusing to Oakey.
Oakey began looking for a table to sit at. Should he start his own table or join some friends? His eyes wandered around the room for a while until he finally settled on sitting by himself first. If someone wished to join him or asked him to join He wouldn't hesitate to comply.
So, this was new to João. He thought that only basic magic was taught in Hogwarts. Apparently, somethings had changed since he left the school last year. Not that he minded. Not that he had the right to mind. In fact, he looked forward to this class now, since it was taught by Professor Schirmer, a top quality teacher.
Greeting the professor with a "Hello, professor," he found himself a seat at the furthest point from Louisa and her group. No, he didn't want any contact with her, if possible. Looking around, he wished they were allowed to sit alone. He worked much better alone, though alchemy was nothing like herbology and he was looking forward to the class.

While Chris was sitting alone looking around he spied somebody else who seemed to be sitting alone at a table. He strode over to where the other student was sitting and said, "Hey, I'm Christopher, but you can call me Chris. Can I join you?"

So they were holding classes in the astronomy tower...just not astronomy, just like they had used the divination tower for the special lessons last term. Gideon climbed the steps up the tower with just a twinge of discomfort having decided to check out the first seminar to see what it was all about seeing as the topic certainly sounded interesting.
"Good day Professor Schirmer," he greeted with a polite nod and smile. It was an unexpected surprise but not unwelcomed seeing as he managed to get along decently with the woman when she taught charms. And the alchemy made sense given the metal eggs that had had for their one assignment that morphed into various creatures after a time. Spotting the set up of tables, Gideon looked around for people to sit with and spotted a lone Hufflepuff sitting by himself.

João was looking at some distant spot when the boy addressed him, so it took him a few seconds to recognise what was being said. Once the boy had his attention though, he was examined from head to the toe, as if the older one was almost inspecting him to detect and faults. It took all his will not to roll his eyes at the kid. Some kids, they were just too bold. He introduced himself before asking for permission to sit. So what if João had just said 'no', huh? Then he would have wasted his breath for nothing. It was almost as if people hoped to be accepted by the beauty of their names or something, introducing themselves first before asking for whatever they wanted.
He wanted to say no. He wanted to point out that he would rather quit the classroom than to work with a baby in such a class like alchemy. Maybe, if he didn't answer him, he would leave? Though, he didn't want any baby crying around either for being turned down by an older student. It wouldn't look well. Plus, he had already acknowledged him, making an eye-contact and such. He just had to say yes. He sighed in his brain, before finally answering the guy after about 20 seconds with a simple, quite silent "Yes." He wasn't going to tell his name of course, because he didn't want this relationship to go any further than simple class-cooperation. Maybe the kid wouldn't hear him and just turn away...
Kennedy had heard of this Alchemy Seminar and thought it would be interesting to join. He's read a tiny bit about it, but not the extent of dragons, herbology and potions. Those subjects he could read on and on and on about. As he entered the room his eyes went slightly wide with a hint of nice surprise.
Why didn't he get the memo that Professor Schirmer was going to teach this?
He made his way to a desk, and smiled at the professor. He was glad to see her. "Hello, Professor Schirmer," he said. "It's nice to see you here." And Charms wasn't the same without her. He still had the charmed pup from the egg experiment and he changed his name to Schirmy...after her, you know.

Yeah, hopes were the bread of the poor.
Chris noticed that the boy didn't seem to want him there, so he sat on the other side of the table from him, muttering a quick "Thanks" before taking a seat. "Sorry if I seemed a little rude coming over here; I'm usually a very shy person..." Chris hoped the Slytherin didn't find him annoying; he seemed to be in his sixth or seventh year, while Chris was only in his third...

At least he knew soem manners and had some brains. Sitting across the table was a good move on behalf of the kid. João noted it.
Hearing his apology, he waved his hand as if to say 'It's fine'. "We have to sit by at least one person anyway," he said with a shrug, "so it isn't rude." But it was also kinda bold for him, being all young and such. People finding a quick excuse to situations killed him, though, their attempts at justifying themselves were sometimes on the funny part.
Done with paying attention to the Chris kid, he lowered his eyes on the table and started examining the things there by his eyes.

Chris noticed that the older boy didn't want to talk... Maybe he should have tried to find someone his own age; he couldn't be the only third year to be interested in Alchemy... Could he?
Maybe somebody else, closer in age to Christopher, would come over and be more willing to chat... Hopefully...

It didn't take to long for someone to come looking to sit with him, The Older Gryffindor Prefect who checked on him on the train ride up sat down beside him. Sure, Go right ahead, Gideon. Oakey said, grinning. Would The Prefect remember him this time? Maybe, although the Scratches on his arms and face have healed since then.
