The astronomy classroom was once again transformed for the last seminar of term. The normal school desks had been replaced with rows of high work benches, and chairs swapped for tall bar-style stools. At the ends of each bench were dressmaking mannequins, simply hung with a tape measure around the neck. Fabric swatches hung like looped bunting from the ceiling, their bright geometric patterns catching in the gentle cool breeze from the open windows.
To one side was a row of tables containing an odd assortment of items: a metal bucket piled high with potatoes, another container full of small dull grey squares, a stack of shiny white tiles, metal racks, paint rollers and paint, a pile of Daily Prophet newspapers, a tin of metal rulers, a box of old shirts, a black bin bag full of stuffing...
And perched on the front desk, her legs lightly swinging underneath, was the tutor for this seminar - Miss Hermy Smythe, of the well-known art and fashion studio just off of Diagon Alley, Smythe and Scryver Designs. She had a warm smile on her face, and clearly an eclectic fashion sense. Beaded bracelets jangle on her wrist as she welcomes you in past a cluster of mannequins dressed in Miss Smythe’s own designs.
“Good morning,” she greets, pushing up her sleeves and rearranging her bracelets. “Please take a seat and make yourselves comfortable. If you’ve worn something you’d rather not get messy, then feel free to take a painting shirt from the box on the side for protection.”

Moving from her seat to grab a modest sized potato, Kurumi returned to her spot and removed her wand from its turquoise holster but set it on the table for now. Lifting up her piece of parchment, Kurumi checked to make sure that her design fit and it did....but juuuuuuuuust barely. Nodding, Kurumi pointed her wand at her potato as her eyes narrowed slightly. Casting a silent Diffindo, Kurumi carefully pulled apart the two pieces and inspected them for a moment to make sure that the surface of both of the slices was smooth by running her fingers over them.
Satisfied with this, Kurumi grabbed a tissue and began to pad the two slices down softly with it when Miss...erm...Misses? Erm... Madam Johanson approached her station.

Looking up from her drawing, Kurumi blinked in surprise for a brief moment. "Actually...I hadn't thought about just using one petal at a time," she replied with a shy nod. That actually didn't sound like too bad of an idea now that she got to thinking about it. "Since we are cutting the potato in half, would it be alright if I did both? So that I had a stamp for the entire blossom and one for just the petal?" That would make the process a little easier and her blossom more accurate, but if that wasn't possible she would just go for the individual petal.

Don't worry if you're not done quite yet - there's no need to rush." She'd far rather slightly slow, good quality work so they could all take home a cushion to be proud of. "We need to transfer your design from the parchment and onto what you'll be using for a printing block."
She moved to a box of translucent type paper on the side desk. "This is transfer paper," she said holding it up for everyone to see. "You can lay it over your parchment and see your design through it." She held it over her own leaf sketch, so they could see. "Carefully draw round the edges of your design in pencil, making sure that the only lines you copy are those you want to have as part of your printing block." Hermy demonstrated this, and then held the parchment up in the air so they could see her single, clear line.
"So, now we need something to transfer it to. First to third years, you'll be using a potato. Fourth years and above, you'll be using the grey lino tiles in the box over there," she pointed to it, so they couldn't somehow get it confused with the big box of white tiles. "You'll see why you've got different materials a bit later - I'm not being mean, honest!" She'd had to think long and hard about that decision, but she was sure it'd be safest in the long run. And she had to think about the student's safety first and foremost. "I'm going to demonstrate using the potato, as it's a bit easier to see what's happening. The first few steps won't apply to the lino, but older ones, please pay attention in case any of your classmates need help."
"First, check your design will fit on the potato or lino. If it doesn't you may need to tweak it a little bit, or shrink it so it can fit." She probably should have mentioned the size restriction a bit more before they'd started drawing. Oops. "Then, carefully cut the potato in half, so you've got a flat surface. There's knives on the side, or you can use diffindo if you'd rather."

"Then put the transfer paper on the potato pencil side down. This flips the design so it'll come out the right way when you print it. To transfer the image, move your wand across the surface and say 'transfero'." She did this, and the pencil that had been on the paper now appeared on the potato.
"You can practice on a spare piece of parchment first if you like."
ooc: As you can see from the photos, I've actually done a demo myself (a very basic one, admittedly - Hermy's is done with much more flair!). If you'd like to do the same, then you're more than welcome to! It doesn't have to be made from a potato or lino - use anything suitable from around the house. Ella beamed as the instructor told her that her sketch was beautiful. "Thanks!" She then thought about what was asked. Hmm...did she want to cut it as an outline? "I think I'm gonna go with the block of color." She decided with a shrug. Yeah. That would look nice, wouldn't it?
The second year couldn't help but wonder why she'd be working with a potato when the older students got to use those...tile thingys. This woman seemed nice though so Ella believed she must have a good reason for it. She watched the demonstration carefully before it was her turn to try it out. First, she grabbed the translucent paper and carefully copied the lines of her sketch onto it. When she was done, she compared her original drawing to the one now on the transfer paper and was relieved to see they were the same. Good.
Standing, she then walked over and grabbed the biggest potato she could find, before skipping back to her work space with it. Next, she held her transfer sketch up to the potato, relieved that it JUST fit in the allotted space. That was a relief. Now it was time for her to cut, yeah?
Deciding she'd probably make a better cut with a knife than her wand, the second year got up once again and grabbed a knife before carefully bring it back to her work space. She then sat down and slowly cut the potato in two. When the two halves fell open on the work space in front of her, Ella inspected them. Yup. They seemed pretty smooth. That was a good sign, yeah?
Now she had to pat the potato dry, which she did gently. Making sure all of the water was absorbed. Once that was done, she was ready to make her transfer.
Nigel knew he could not draw and was not that creative. SO it took him a while to come up with an idea. He decided that since he likes Batman and since his symbol was easy to draw. It made perfect sense to draw his as perfect as he could.
He went up and got some black stencils and got to work. It only took him a couple minutes to make it perfect. He looked back down and was happy with his batman symbol.
Once he finished it, it was time to move on to the potatoes. Now that he heard the next set of instructions. Nigel knew what they were doing with them and it did not sound that hard.
Once he check the size of the potato he picked and made it perfect. He cut the potato just like the instructor did. Next Nigel patted the potato dry with a tissue so it will not just wipe off with water.
Next Nigel put the transfer paper on the potato pencil side down. So it'll come out just the way Nigel wanted. Next, Nigel moved his wand across the surface and said '"Transfero". He then looked down and his awesome batman symbol was on his potato. He hoped he did it right.Nigel raised his hand and asked
"Miss Smythe, Did i do this right?"

Emmanuelle quickly finished drawing her parchment (having gone with a slightly random pattern of triangles) and moved on to the next step. Transfering her design onto the transfer paper. It took her a couple of tries, considering it was a little harder to see through the paper. But she finally had it. She decided to practice the transfer spell a couple of times on parchment scraps before actually attempting to use it on the lino tile. After all, it was probably expensive and, well, she just didn't want to waste it.
Placing her traced design on the scrap parchment, Em moved her wand over the paper as demonstrated and cast. "Transfero." Pulling back the transfer paper, she discovered that her design was smudged in places. Sigh. So, she traced the design again on a new sheet of transfer paper. Placing the new sheet on another sheet of scrap paper, she performed the spell again, this time pronouncing it a little more carefully. "Transfero." When she pulled back the paper this time, she found that the design had transferred perfectly. Yay!
Now that she had mastered the spell, Em walked to the bin and grabbed one of the grey lino tiles. It felt heavier in her hand than she was expecting. Hmm. She carried it back to where she was working and carefully set it down. After tracing her design for a third time onto another new sheet of transfer paper, she was finally ready to transfer her design to the tile. She placed her transfer paper pencil side down on the lino tile, then moved her wand over the surface and carefully said the spell. "Transfero." Pulling back the paper, she found that the design had transferred perfectly again. Yay! This part done, she waited patiently for the next step.

Alyssa looked at the rough sketch that the instructor had drawn and decided that she would redraw her design again. The instructor was right, it would be easier if there were less colors involved. So she redrew her drawing and once she was satisfied sat back and looked at her new lighthouse drawing
She quickly looked up when the Professor demonstrated what they were going to do next. She was a fourth year so she was supposed to work with the grey lino tiles instead of the potatoes. But she still watched as the Professor demonstrated what they were supposed to do with the potato and then quickly jotted it down in her journal.
Text Cut: Alyssa's Journal
1. Trace outline of drawing onto transfer paper.
2. Make sure that design fits the size of the grey lino tile/potato Steps for students using potato
3. Cut potato in half either with knife or diffindo spell.
4. Pat potato dry with tissue.
5. Place transfer paper on potato, pencil drawing facing downwards.
6. Move wand over across the surface and say,"transfero"
Once Alyssa had written down the steps, she went forward and took a piece of transfer paper and a grey lino tile. Going back to her desk, she placed the transfer paper over her drawing and pressed down on it until she could see her drawing clearly underneath it. Picking up her pencil, she drew just the outline of her drawing like the Professor had demonstrated. Then she waited for the Professor to demonstrate to the older students what they were supposed to do.
It was then that she noticed Kurumi working on a potato and got confused. 'Are we supposed to work on a potato as well as a lino tile? Did I misunderstand her instructions? Or maybe Kurumi wants to experiment both methods.' Alyssa thought to herself. She looked around to see whether any of the other older students were doing the same as what Kurumi was doing.

Nerida smiled another good choice, awesome. Making a cushion and than designing an outfit oh that was amazing, she had never done that before.
She was good at sketching should be no problem. But what to draw. Nothing coming to her mind she did the first thing she thought of and that was a moon. After sketching a crescent moon she flipped the paper so the moon was on its side. Suddenly a thought came to her and she decided to draw sun rays on the crescent moon but only coming from the bottom. She only drew three. Soon she realized that she had drawn something like her family symbol. She looked down at her sketch.
She stopped sketching and looked up at the Professor as she demonstrated what they would be doing. Ah drats she would have to use the potato, which probably was good she had never done this before. She took her drawing and put it on top of the potato to see if it fit. Almost, a little bit bigger and the drawing would have been to big. Taking her wand she pointed it at the potato and said "Diffindo," The Potato split in half. Taking a tissue she began to pat the potato dry. She than grabbed a transfer paper and placed it onto her parchment she had forgot to do the tracing earlier. She carefully traced her drawing onto the transfer paper. Once done she placed the transfer paper on top of the potato.
She took her wand and moved it over the surface and said "Transfero," Suddenly the drawing that was once on the paper was now onto the potato. Hmm that was pretty cool. She raised her hand and asked Mrs.Smythe, Miss Smythe, Have I done this right?

Reason: drawing isn't that big
Should we be performing the spell on the Lino Tile? Confused.
There's some good in this world and it's worth fighting for| LOTR|Whovian|Sherlock Fan
Alyssa still remained confused as to whether she should be attempting the transfer spell on her grey lino tile, like the younger students were doing with the potato, but she decided that until she was able to clarify it with Professor Smythe, that she would just practice performing the spell on a regular piece of parchment like she seen another Slytherin older student do.
Placing the transfer paper on which she had traced out the outline of her drawing on the parchment, with the pencil lines facing downwards, she moved her wand across the surface and while concentrating on the spell, said, "TRANSFERO". She then removed the transfer paper and peeked under it....to see that her drawing had indeed transferred over to the parchment below.
Taking another parchment, she did practiced the spell again, "TRANSFERO" and when she checked again, she saw that she had been successful in casting the spell again. Alyssa looked around for Mrs. Smythe because she really wanted to clarify with the Professor regarding her instructions.

Ultimately, she decided that her color scheme would include some kind of Blue, red, green, and yellow.
Ian smiled back at Ella. He was really glad now he'd decided to come to this seminar. He did however return to his work to figure out what he was going to do next.
Ian was quite pleased as she came to look at his design, but his face dropped as she said it wasn't quite what she was looking for. He responded. "I'm sorry, Ms. Smythe. I must have misunderstood. He quickly retrieved another parchment roll as he set back to the design. He set about drawing a pattern of blue and yellow octagons, similar to old style footballs he'd seen from America. He rather liked the design and watched as Ms. Smythe gave the demonstration of what she wanted done.
Sarah smiled. With the teacher's approval Sarah went on, her butterfly was perfect size. She first traced the outline of the butterfly on the transferring paper. Then "DIFFINDO" she cut the potato in half. Using a tissue she wiped off excess water and placed her transfer paper upside down on the potato. "tranfero" she said, and the pattern magically appeared on the potato.
"Nicely done," Hermy commented as she walked past. "You can put the remaining half on the side if you like, so someone else can use it." Potatoes weren't expensive, and she'd compost the extra, but it still seemed silly to have excess waste.

Hadn't this one said she was a Prefect? That'd make her at least a fourth year, surely? Either that, or the Gryffindor older years had really let their standards slip. Possible, but unlikely.
"You can use the lino if you want," she pointed out. "It's harder to work with to make the printing block than the potato, but does give a nicer finish." It was up to her though, really. Hermy had plenty of potatoes to go around. At the girl's question, Hermy nodded. "Of course you can try out both. Sometimes it is good to experiment to see which gives the better finish overall."

Hermy leant over and looked at the potato. "It looks like it to me," she confirmed with a smile. "The Batman logo? So I'm guessing you'll be printing in black....possibly on a yellow background?"

"Practice definitely makes perfect," Hermy said, leaning over the girl's desk. "Well done."

Hmm? Hermy wandered over the to voice. "Lovely job," Hermy said with a smile, even though she was clueless as to what it what of. "Good work."

"It looks like you've mastered the spell," Hermy said, spying a number of differing quality transfers on the girls parchment. "You can definitely transfer your design onto your lino now."

He rather liked the design and watched as Ms. Smythe gave the demonstration of what she wanted done.
"No problem," Hermy said warmly, as she glanced over his new design. Octagons? Nice. "That's going to look very striking and geometric," she said. "Just make sure when you change colours with your printing block that you wash it throughly."
Things were proceeding well. Just a loose scribble in any scrap bit will do, like this." And with that, she held up her own potato with the bits outside the leaf marked. "This is just to ensure you don't cut the wrong bits out by mistake when we move on in a minute."

Merlin Kurumi was out of her element and it was becoming more and more clear to her just how much it was effecting her thinking when she heard people address their guest professor. Erm, right...Smythe ... not what she had said earlier, which had actually already slipped the Gryffindor's mind to be completely honest.
If there were two things Kurumi was allergic to they would be flying and fashion. Yep.
So cue a rise in color when Madam SMYTHE came by her station...and pointed out the tiles, erm, lino. Oh, erm, right... Kurumi was clearly too flustered about not knowing anything that instructions had sort of slipped her mind...ish. That, and Kurumi really just liked potatoes boil em mash em stick em in a stew. At least that was what she was going to tell herself.
Boil em mash em stick em in a stew
"I think I'll do that," Kurumi nodded as she glanced at her potato. She should probably go get one of those tiles too. So, slowly and very self consciously Kurumi made her way out of her seat again and went to grab a tile when she was struck with an idea. Maybe she would make the petal print with the potatoes, for something a little softer and and more unfinished, and then the blossoms with the tile. Hmm...that didn't sound to bad actually.
Making her way back now, Kurumi set the tile to the side with her potato halves and set to drawing her design again. Well, just the petal shape so now she had two patterns to work with. Merlin, she was making this more complicated for herself somehow and it was just stamping.
.....oops?
Taking the parchment with the design on it and setting it face down against a spare one, Kurumi ran her wand over it as had been demonstrated. "Transfero." Nervously, Kurumi removed the top parchment and was pleased to see that her cherry blossom design was now on both of them. Yay!
With her petal only design on the transfer paper, Kurumi set it on top of her dried potato and moved her wand over it to cast the spell again while uttering another Transfero. Removing the paper, Kurumi breathed a sigh of relief when she saw her design on the potato. Taking the design of the full flower this time, Kurumi set it against the tile and took a more concentrated deep breath. No biggy, just like before.... Moving her wand over the tile slowly, Kurumi cast Transfero again and slooooooooooowly pealed the paper away. Oooooooooh thank Merlin it hadn't somehow melted. Now with a petal print on one half of her potato and a full cherry blossom print on her lino tile, Kurumi repeated the process one more time on the other potato to make a full cherry blossom print on it as well. Never knew which one would end up giving her the result she wanted.

"Nicely done," Hermy commented as she walked past. "You can put the remaining half on the side if you like, so someone else can use it." Potatoes weren't expensive, and she'd compost the extra, but it still seemed silly to have excess waste. Things were proceeding well. Sarah nodded - she never wasted. "Who needs a potato?" she asked the students around her. "We don't want it to go to waste... I am sure the Irish among us will agree" she said in the kind of voice an auctioneer uses, referring to the Irish Potato Famine in the 1800's.
To be cautious she marked the potato parts that she did not want that surrounded her butterfly.

Okay, so now that Ella was done tracing her butterfly and making sure the potato surface was ready, she could focus on transferring the image over. Carefully, she placed the transfer paper pencil side down, and made sure to flip it correctly. Then, holding out her wand towards potato, the second year moved it slowly across the surface. Deep breath and "Transfero!" Blink.Blink. That worked, yeah? At least Ells hoped so. And she slowly removed the transfer paper to check. Grin. IT DID WORK. Very cool.
Next Ella picked up her pencil and marked the parts of the potato that wouldn't be part of the print. She began to lightly shade all the bits around the outside of the butterfly, careful not to damage the image in any way. She decided to add the antennas as Ms. Smythe had suggested and just shaded around the area where she figured they would be. That way she could cut them out too. Once she was finished, the second year placed her pencil down and used the tissue from earlier to wipe it clean. She found her eyes wandering over to Ian's work space, wondering how he was doing. He seemed to be doing okay though, which was good.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jory got the drawing equipment and sat thinking for a while about what he wanted his design to be. Finally, he came up with rocket like ne of those used to go in space. Except this one would be colourful instead of white. He set about drawing and when he was done he used red, blue, black and maroon.
This done, the badger moved on to the next set of instructions. He checked to see if his drawing would fit on the potato and to his delight, it did. Next, he grabbed the knife and got the potato in half so he got that flat side. With a tissue, Jory now carefully dried off the potato. Now, he put the transfer paper on the side instructed onto the potato. He moved his wand over the surface and said ''Transfero!''. He checked the potato and was now pleased to see his colourful rocket on it.
Now, the boy picked up his quill and began outlining the parts of the potato he didn't want. Finished, he waited for the next set of instructions.
Miss Smythe had said her design was great and that was something Nessie thought was worth smiling about. It was a sweet compliment, and smiling was healthy anyways.
Transferring? Why did they have to do that?
Hmm…Ness didn’t get it, but surely whatever this woman was saying had to be right. She did own a clothing shop now didn’t she? She had to know a thing or two about designing things. It looked a little hard though, this whole lino and potato thing. Meh...maybe it would be easy. You could never know until you tried.
For the first step she had to trace out the design onto some transfer paper. Pretty simple it appeared. She took a pencil and then began drawing her design onto the transparent. Once done, she removed the paper from the parchment and grinned as they looked almost the same. It would work.
The red head then got out from her seat and looked at both the potatoes and the linos. She knew she was old enough to use the tiles and all, but she wanted some practice before she did the real thing. Trying not to feel ashamed, Renesmee picked up one potato and one tile too. She then headed back to her working space and sat down.
Now to do the hard stuff. The Hufflepuff cut her potato in half and then placed her transfer paper right on to one half, making sure the pencil side was touching the potato. ‘Transfero’. Wasn’t too difficult to pronounce, but just to be sure, Ness went over the work a few times in her mind. Then she took her wand, aimed it at the paper and potato and not too loudly said. "Transfero."Nessie’s eyes widened as the design on her paper appeared now on her potato too.
See it wasn’t so hard after all. This was easy magic.

Hermy watched the Gryffindor Prefect go and get herself a lino tile. It was a bit more work doing both methods, but also great to gain an understanding of your materials. When Hermy was starting up,and even before then, she'd experimented with various methods to see what gave her the best results. It was definitely worth it now. "Good work," she said with a nod to the Prefect at her transferred designs.

Hermy had said to just leave it on the side, right? Not interrupting the class by trying to auction it off? She lightly shook her head. Hogwarts certainly still managed to entertain in odd ways.

This one seemed to be going on smoothly, Hermy noted as she wandered past, though there was a little problem. "Be careful not to overcomplicate the design," she commented briefly. "You can only print in one colour at a time neatly with the method we'll be using today."
ooc: The transfer on the potato should just be an outline in pencil, and the design when printed will be one colour unless he adds detail on afterwards (which he is very welcome to do).

"Nicely done," Hermy commented with a smile. "Are you going to be trying both the lino and potato like Kurumi?" she asked, interested. "They give slightly different effects - though the potato is easier to make the actually printing block."
Hermy returned to the front of the class, and clapped her hands together. "Now most of you have transferred your design, I'm going to take you through the next stages. If you're not quite there yet, I'd like to ask you to put your wands and drawing implements down one moment so that I have your full attention." This next bit was the part of the lesson Hermy was most nervous about. She really didn't want any injuries in her class, however minor, just because someone wasn't listening.
"If we were doing this totally by hand, we'd use tools like this," Hermy said, holding up a set of lino cutting blades and a handle. "These are used to scoop out the excess material from around your design so that it won't get paint on it and won't print." She hoped everyone got that concept. "However today we're going to be using our wands. Whilst it is safer and quicker than these blades, I would still like you to be careful. The charm can be a little tricky to control - which is why I've only got the older years using the lino. The potatoes are softer to work with, and this means the charm is easier to control." She paused to look around the class.
"Essentially we're going to make our wand into the equivalent of that tool, and take out some of the hard graft. The incantation is 'terfodere' and then either 'potato' or 'lino' according to whichever you are using. When you're done you say 'finite'." Hermy picked up the spare half of her demonstration potato. "The reason for adding the last bit is to limit what you can scoop out - the spell can be used to scoop out anything you like, and as you can imagine, this could be pretty risky if your wand were to slip at all."
Taking her wand in her left hand, Hermy held up the potato. "The trick is to get the pressure right, so you only scoop out the desired amount. I find it easiest to build up in layers - put on too much pressure, and the spell will tend to get caught up and then slip suddenly in the wrong direction, ruining your design. I'd also suggest holding your wand more like a quill, as you'll find it easier to follow the shape of your design." She changed the grip on her wand, moving her hand slightly closer to its tip, and holding it between her thumb and first finger as if it was a quill. "Terfodere potato!" she cast. "Now, see how it scoops out where I'm pointing my wand?" She moved her wand so they could see the potato hollowing out, before saying "Finite."
"We'll get to doing it on your printing blocks shortly and how to get the best result, but first I'd like you to practice the incantation, and get a feel for how you'd like to hold your wand as you trace round your design. Remember, Ter-fo-dair-reh." She put the potato back on the desk. "If you've got any questions at this stage, please ask now."
ooc: Don't do anything with wand and incantation together yet - just one at a time. I'll be moving on to that in 2-3hours time.
The Hufflepuff looked up as Miss Smythe asked her a question. Oh Kurumi was doing the potato and lino too? Ness hadn’t even noticed. At least she now knew she wasn’t alone in this. "Yeah, I think so. If that’s okay?" That would be alright now wouldn’t it? Nessie sure expected it to be.
Taking another piece of transferring paper, Renesmee redrew her two stars once again. She then placed it this time on the lino tile and pointed her wand towards it. "Transfero." She said again and watched as once more the design went onto the surface beneath the transfer paper. It was really amazing and all.
Cutting..with their wands? This sounded SCARY and DANGEROUS! Renesmee blinked at this woman for a few seconds. What..what if they made mistakes and things went chaotic? Oh! Merlin! Nessie felt this wasn’t really something to safe to be doing around so many people. When Miss Smythe had said the lino would be harder, Ness wasn’t exactly so sure what she meant, but now she understood. They would be cutting it out and of course the lino was a harder material.
Right but now they were just going over the incarnation. No need to think about all the problems that might arouse later. Instead she began saying the incarnation aloud to make sure she'd be all alright when she would be using her wand. "Ter-fo-dair-reh." she said quietly to herself and then repeated it another three times. "Ter-fo-dair-reh. Ter-fo-dair-reh. Ter-fo-dair-reh." This was serious and she didn't want to take a chance of making any mistakes.
“Can..can I practice with a potato first?” she asked shyly. You know there would be a smaller possibility of accidents if you practiced the easy way first.
Noting the displeasure of her teacher and no one taking her offer of the potato, she put it aside. Now on to the next part. Sarah listened intently to what the teacher said. "Ter-fo-dair-reh" she said practicing, "Ter-fo-dair-reh, Ter-fo-dair-reh, Ter-fo-dair-reh po-tay-toe" she repeated it, aquainting her tongue with the incantation.
She took out her wand next and started tracing her design, without saying the incantation, just one little out of place sut and her pattern was goner...

Alyssa quickly picked up her grey lino once the visiting Professor had clarified that they were supposed to use the same steps as the younger students to transfer their drawing onto the lino. She placed her transfer paper with the pencil drawing face down on the lino and concentrating on the spell, took out her wand, moved it across the surface, and said,"TRANSFERO". She then removed the transfer paper and was glad to see that the grey lino had the outline of her lighthouse successfully transferred onto it.
The Professor began to speak again and so Alyssa quickly put down her lino and watched as she demonstrated the next delicate steps. 'Wow!. This part definitely looks more difficult. I wish that I was using the potato now.' Alyssa thought to herself. She watched carefully and once the Professor was done demonstrating and giving her instructions, Alyssa picked up her quill and jotted down the steps in her journal.
Text Cut: Alyssa's journal
1. Trace outline of drawing onto transfer paper.
2. Make sure that design fits the size of the grey lino tile/potato Steps for students using potato:
3. Cut potato in half either with knife or diffindo spell.
4. Pat potato dry with tissue. Steps for all:
5. Place transfer paper on potato/lino pencil drawing facing downwards.
6. Move wand over across the surface and say,"transfero" Removing access from material from around design:
7. Scoop out excess material around design on lino/potato using wand.
8. Hold wand like you are holding your quill, between thumb and first finger.
9. Incantation for scooping out excess on lino is "Terfodere Lino" or "Terfodere Potato" for potato.
10. Scoop out excess in layers. Do not put too much pressure.
11. End spell with "Finite".
Putting down the quill, Alyssa exchanged it for her wand. She placed her wand in between her thumb and index finger and held it like she was holding her quill. It felt uncomfortable holding her wand like that because she was accustomed to holding it in a grip. But she continued to hold it and moved it around like she was writing with it and then moved it around like she was simulating cutting something out with it. Once she got accustomed to holding it the way the Professor had demonstrated it, Alyssa holstered it back.
Now for the incantation. Since she was working on the lino, the incantation she would be using would be "Terfodere Lino". She first practiced pronouncing the main spell word, "Ter-fo-dair-reh...Ter-fo-dair-reh...Ter-fo-dair-reh". Alyssa practiced saying it a couple more times until she was sure of the pronunciation before she practiced saying the full incantation,"Ter-fo-dair-reh Lino....Ter-fo-dair-reh Lino....Ter-fo-dair-reh Lino."
Then she switched between practicing hold the wand and then saying the incantation separately, continuing to do both while waiting for the Professor to give next instructions.

Things were proceeding well. "Those of you who have already transferred your designs, use your pencil or quill to carefully mark the bits of the potato or lino you don't want to keep as part of your print. Just a loose scribble in any scrap bit will do, like this." And with that, she held up her own potato with the bits outside the leaf marked. "This is just to ensure you don't cut the wrong bits out by mistake when we move on in a minute."

I'd also suggest holding your wand more like a quill, as you'll find it easier to follow the shape of your design." She changed the grip on her wand, moving her hand slightly closer to its tip, and holding it between her thumb and first finger as if it was a wand.
Nerida smiled though she could tell that the Professor had no clue what it was that she had done. Ooo she had already transferred her design onto her potato. She may have been a late started of making the design but Nerida had caught up with the class. She pulled a quill from her bag and scribbled out the parts of the potato that was outisde of her moon sun thing. They would be cutting out the pieces them selves, this Professor really trusted them!
Nerida did what Mrs.Smythe said to do and put down her quill and her wand. Drats no tools just their wand, though it probablly was safer than the tools, Nerida probably would have cut something or someone. Terfodere, hopefully the incantation would be easy to pronounce as it was to think. Build up in layers, hold your wand like a quill. Ter-fo-dair-reh potato, she didn't need to slow done on potato she knew hot to say potato. Terfdere...Terfoder...Terfodere...Terfodere potato...Terfodere potato...Terfodere potato... she practiced without her wand in her hand. After saying the incantaion several times she decided to go onto holding her wand like a quill.
She picked up her quill and tried to move her hand down like it was a quill, but each time she moved her hand, her hand just moved back up into her normal position. She tried putting her hand into the quill position and than moving until she finally got her hand to stay into the quill position as she moved. She switched from practicing her wand position/movement to the incantation until the Professor gave new instructions.

Emmanuelle was trying to remember where she'd heard that spell before. Oh yeah, she'd had heard it before. A male voice. Maybe her father? Yep, that's who it was. He was a contractor and used it in a pinch whenever he ran out of crown molding for a house. But still, practice makes perfect as the professor had pointed out. So, Em practiced saying the spell a few times just to make sure. "Ter-fod-ere. Ter-fod-ere. Terfod-ere. Terfodere." Okay, now with the word lino. "Terfodere lino. Terfodere lino."

Jory listened to what was said before making notes. Then he started practicing the incantation. ''Ter-fod-ere,'' he muttered "Ter-fod-ere...Ter-fod-ere.'' Together now with potato. "Terfodere potato... Terfodere potato.''
He was sure he got it right as he waited for the next set of instructions.

Now that her designed had been transferred and marked accordingly, Kurumi peeked up then things moved along and was severely grateful that this spell didn't seem to have sounds that she sometimes struggled with. Setting everything down for now, Kurumi decided first to simply focus on the incantation.
"Ter-fo-dair-reh...Ter-fo-dair-reh....Ter-fo-dair-reh..." she muttered under her breath as she looked idly at her lino tile and the cherry blossom pattern on it. She didn't add lino or potato to the end just yet since, well, she knew how to say those two words properly. Having repeated this a few times, Kurumi picked up her wand and attempted to hold it like she would her quill.
Only this felt weird. Really weird.
Obviously, her wand was much thicker than a quill, so that was already making her fingers feel uncomfortable. Not to mention the texture was entirely different as Kurumi's holly wood wand had some rather intricate carvings on it that were also adding to the discomfort. Shifting her fingers a bit, Kurumi attempted to find a position that wasn't too...weird...and eventually did. Sort of. At least she knew she would be able to hold her wand now without her fingers cramping at least.
Not saying the incantation this time, Kurumi simply practiced moving her wand over the area she would have live to have carved out were she actually performing the spell.

Happy with everyone's practice of the incantation, Hermy clapped her hands together to get everyone's attention. "It sounds like you've got the incantation sorted, so let's get on to using it." Hopefully they'd found a way to hold their wand comfortably too. She knew it was a bit weird and awkward at first, but it really was easier like that than trying to do fine detail using the handle to grip.
"First step...make sure your potato or lino is somewhere comfortable for cutting. Feel free to turn it around as you work, to make sure you'll have the easiest wrist movement for nice smooth lines." She placed her own potato on the front desk, and turned it so that the leave shape was with the natural movement of her wrist.
"Now, make you wand into your scooping tool. Whilst you do so, aim it at your desk, so you can't do too much damage goes wrong." She bit lip her lip, before adding, "Except clearly it won't because you're all great." Right.
"Terfodere potato!"
"Now, as I said earlier, you need to put some pressure on to get the spell to work - just like if you're scooping ice cream from a tub. Aim your wand where you'd like to remove material from your block, and gently add a little pressure until you're scooping. Maintaining that pressure, follow the line round." She did this around the top half of her leaf.
"See how I've got a thin line? If you're not sure, practice away from your design first."
SPOILER!!: Step 2: Make your first line
ooc: Unfortunately, I wasn't very good at the tranfero spell, so I had to use a paper template *pout*
"Now continue around the design, slowly building up how deep you're scooping. If you're using a potato, your design need to be at least a centimetre clear of the rest of the potato. For lino, about 2 or 3mm." She looked at the older students. "Two or three millimetres doesn't sound a lot, I know, but you'll still need to build up to that depth carefully, as lino is a lot harder than potato to dig out."
With this, Hermy continued around her design, building up the depth that she cleared away. She held it up for everyone to see.
SPOILER!!: Step 3: Build it up slowly
"And then just keep going until you've removed all the excess material around your design. When you're done, don't forget to 'finite' the spell." There wasn't much excess around her potato, so Hermy quickly finished off her demo, clearly well practised and comfortable with cutting using this method. She held it up once more.
"Try and keep the surrounding area as smooth as possible, so not to get too many grooves that could catch paint and make your prints look a bit fuzzy."
SPOILER!!: Step 4: One potato stamp complete!
"When you're happy with the incantation and wand grip, go ahead and start. If there's any problems, raise your hand and I'll come and help. Remember - build it up slowly and neatly."

Sarah was read. She put her potato in front of her, rolled up her sleeves and made herself comfortable, giving a stretch for a good measure. She took out her wand "Ter-fo-dair-reh po-tay-toe", and she started tracing around her design, adjusting the pressure that the wand made a cut exactly 1 centimetre thick. She then cleared away all that was excluded from the tracing. It got a bit hard when she had to finely trace around the antennas of the butterfly, but she was doing great. All too soon, she had made her design "FINITE" she said. She raised her hand. "Is this okay?" she asked, showing her potatoe. It looked fine really. "should I make the batterfly as an outline or just have everything filled in?" she asked.
