Kurumi's eyes narrowed when she head how Professor LOONEYwood referred to Thereos. Kurumi hadn't liked Divination any better with the centaur than she did now so that wasn't the issue. The issue Kurumi had was the blatant disrespect the woman was showing for not only a living being but a Hogwarts professor. Nonsense...it... Kurumi was appalled to be honest and it was based on her morals alone that Kurumi refused to answer the next question the woman had asked. Nope. Besides, HER classes were a bunch of nonsense as well. Calling the kettle black much? Still, Kurumi did search her own memory for some sort of recollection of what Ogham Staves were. She could vaguely remember coming across the name Ogham in her studying she had begun for her NEWTs and remembered thinking that the carvings on the alphabet used reminded her an awful lot of runes. Wasn't the meaning or interpretation of Ogham "Celtic Tree Alphabet" or something like that? Yeah, Kurumi remembered a bit about the subject but was not going to offer up any response. Instead Kurumi pretended to be taking notes on her parchment while she continued to listen to her classmates. Yeah, no answer for you Professor Disrespectful. |
Wait...they were actually going into the forrest? At this Nessie blinked, she wasn't too sure she was ready for this, but she didn't have time to prepare herself. She could do this, she urged herself on. Then she went to stand closer to the front, yet still in the middle. She wasn't one the older students there, but neither was she one of the younger ones. She was exactly in between, and so she felt it would be best to stand in the middle then, for protection and all of course. Following the class, Nessie continued to move her feet forward as they walked deeper into the forrest. This wasn't so bad after all, it was just like walking anywhere. The trick was keeping your mind off any thoughts that involved the dangerous creatures that lived in these surroundings, that would have been easy if it hadn't been for that student mentioning Acumantulas. When they had entered a small clearing, Ness stood still and had over heard someone mentioning the gigantic spider. They wouldn't be seeing one of those right...nor thestrals either? Gahh! Those thoughts had her really scared, and it was very difficult for her to concentrate now. Focus! She told herself, and then listened to the Professor's next question. Renesmee raised her hand, she wasn't too sure about what this Professor was talking about, but she decided to give a guess, just so she could seem clever and all you know. "Isn't it something to do with trees?" she asked as she looked around and noticed all the greenery. |
Text Cut: Professor Nodding automatically as Professor Elwood spoke, her eyes widened when a stick was pulled. She recognised the stuff right away for her neighbor used to be obsessed with this kind of Divination. The first year straightened and raised her hand ,"With Ogham Staves, wooden sticks are used and they are not random sticks," She said,"I believe they have specific carvings on them," She tried to see if the one held by the Professor had any. "It's an ancient method as far as I know." She finished settling back on her spot and listening to what other students said. |
Nerida raised an eyebrow was Professor Elwood honestly scared of a bug, it was a big bug but since she was a Professor it would be no problem for her right? Enjoy cloud shapes? Who would want to stare at clouds, sure it would be a major waste of a lesson but then again divination... She looked around at all the tress as the Professor did a waving motion to the trees around them. Oh the Ogham Staves sounded familliar. As she searched her brain for the answer she also listened for her other classmates. Hmm odd Kurumi hadn't answered she must not like Divination as well... Raising her hand she answered "Um are the Ogham Staves runes or divination runes? If there was such thing as that... Like each of the trees wood represent something in divination? Maybe the spirtual meaning or something like that... She had put some thought into the answer because this Ravenclaw did not answer questions with stupid answers unless she had no clue what the answer was. |
SPOILER!!: Scaredy Professor Spike nodded. "Yep, awesome giant spiders," he said with a innocent grin and bounce of his curls, made oblivious to the woman's discomfort by his own exuberance. "There was meant to be a whole colony in the forest at one point." If there was one thing Spike knew about, it was critters. Especially ones of the giant eight-legged variety. He looked around the clearing almost longingly. What was the point of being in the forest if you never got to see any of the awesome creatures? They could have looked at branches of trees just on the grounds. Cue pout and arms folded across his chest. Divination had gone down another notch in Spike Hutchinson's eyes. And no, the wink didn't get him on side. He looked at the stick, almost in disgust. "Bits of dead wood?" he suggested. Honestly, he was clueless. "Age rings?" He was going to suggest 'randomly shaped twigs' but thought that might be going a little too far, seeing as he was a Prefect. ...it was probably true though. |
Messer was listening the whole time. Since he didn't know what they're goin to do today, so he decided to stay quite and listened to the other students answers. He heard the Professor commenting on Kurumi's answer that she was close to what they will do today. Something we can take from the forest? What was that mean? Was they allowed to take anything from the forest? Then he raised hi eyebrows at the next question. Divination by whom? No he never heard that name before. |
SPOILER!!: professor Taylor looked at the professor as she talked. She smiled and listen closely to her. Tay always loved divination despite hating the future. Taylor raised her hand, "Professor isnt Ogham Staves, sticks that are carved with celtic symbols?" She thought she heard of them before and so she guessed though she wasnt too sure since Taylor really didnt pay attention when her nanny or dad had talked about her heritage... |
...Ogham what? Penelope blinked a couple times, as if that might magically make her understand what the professor was talking about. There was "ham" in it, so...did it have something to do with ham? Some way it was cooked? Were they going to eat it? Cool as that would be, Penelope doubted that very much. What did eating have to do with Divination? Nothing, unfortunately. So she just kept quiet, sort of listening to the other students' answer and sort of just looking around at her surroundings. Being in the Forbidden Forest was kinda cool after all. She wished she could come here more often. |

Ogham Staves-what? Ella had no idea what the heck this meant. It didn't even sound like a real thing. Hmm. Professor Elwood wouldn't go around just making things up for giggles would she? Just to see what the kids would say? ...No...she totally wouldn't. Considering the Professor was holding a stick, Ella decided to take a wild guess. It was better than nothing. "Erm...do we like...drop sticks in a pile and see what shapes they take?" Seemed legit. |
Wisteria watched the professor closely as she went on with her lesson. She didn't want to miss anything so instead of remaining in the back she started making herself to the front. Hmm, Ogham Staves? Witsy came across these vaguely in the library. "Professor, I read a little somewhere that there are 20 sticks present with symbols on each. That's really all I know. Will we be making them?" |
SPOILER!!: All you innocent children in the forest "Okay guys, attention over here please." Callie had noticed a few of the students' glances had begun to sway to the line of trees around their clearing due to some more noises but nothing sounded bad, so they would press on. Right, Ogham Staves. "Like a few of you all said, Ogham Staves are used in a form of Divination performed by the ancient Celtic diviners in which sticks and bits of wood are taken from the different types and breeds of trees that have been documented as important by the Celtic religions." She raised her stick and placed a finger at the end. "This, is where the Celtic Alphabet symbol is carved on the stick that is ideally taken from the corrisonding tree. That is, that the symbol and tree match correctly on each stick." If it was hard to understand now she promised it would make sense soon enough. "Firstly lets try and remember or guess which types of trees would be used in this Ogham reading. Remember what Mister Vanderbilt said, Wandlore also uses the same type of trees for wood that would be in some of your all's wands. Use that to help you." The Professor readjusted her skirt and waited for answers. "Just one type of wood per person please." She didn't want one person to hog all of them. |
Frightening the first years? How about sixth years too? Kurumi was not the biggest fan of Acromantulas...or spiders in general. So, sorry Professor Disrespectful, Spike was frightening some sixth years too. At the woman's next question, Kurumi glanced over at Vickers for a moment to smile. He really was brilliant and needed to break out of his shell and realize it. Kurumi then cocked her head to the side and looked down at her own wand before raising her hand. "Holly?" she asked. Her own wand was made from holly and she remembered some Celtic lore regarding the tree. Best guess she had at the moment anyway. |
So her suggestion hadn't been that far fetched? Wicked. Ella was usually rubbish with this Divination stuff so to be anywhere even close to correct was a major score. The second year listened, trying not to become too preoccupied with the noises of the forest. She still had her wand in hand though, and was gripping it rather tightly. Had to be prepared for anything, yeah? ...though hopefully no Hmm...one type of tree...and one that would also be used in wandlore? Well Ella's wand was spruce so.."Professor, would spruce be one?" |
Nodding weakly at what was said. It sure had some new information, but could she memorize them all. That was the question! Cassia was looking forward to skip the talking part and get to the doing part. Well, she knew they needed to talk before getting to work. But still... Considering the question, Cassia didn't know what exactly the kinds of wood the Professor meant. But with the generous hint she raised her hand, "Is Ash wood one of them?" She suggested. |
Penelope was a first year, but she wasn't really frightened by the one guy mentioning Acromantulas. They were just big spiders, apparently? Eh. Not that scary sounding to her. But anyway. So Ogham Staves were sticks? Like wands and stuff? Sort of? But with the Celtic alphabet - what was the difference between that alphabet and the normal one? - carved on them? Hm. But now they were naming off wood? And could use the one that their wands were made of? Well, that made answering this easier... ...if Penelope could remember what the shopkeeper had said hers was. Hm. Hmm. Oh yeah! "Oak?" she asked/answered, raising her hand. |
Gideon was chosing to ignore the talk of acromantulas, instead hoping the fact it was daylight rather then dusk or night would be a deterant for anything that they really needed to worry about. The prefect listening to what was being discussed and simply paying attention seeing as he wasn't sure of anything in regards to the topic at hand. However when the question was asked on woods that might be useful, the Gryffindor decided to give it a try, thinking back onto types of wand wood. "Perhaps apple would be used..." he offered after raising his hand so he could answer. Hadn't there been something between fruit trees and divination in the books they had had access to to create their 'wands' a few terms before? |
SPOILER!!: Elwood A small smile tugged at the corner of his lips. He got it right! Better yet Professor Up goes the hand again "Professor, there's also Hazel wood." he remembered that one pretty distinctly, as it was the kind of wood he worked on in their Runes class from last term |
Hearing that she was very good on both accounts made Nerida grin. She had read the book while at the Hospital when her mother was with a muggle healer or were they called doctors in the muggle world. Big huge spiders, eep the Prefect was kinda scaring her! Sure she had made fun of Professor Elwood but now she took it all back now that the Prefect was making it more frightening. At the mention of the Professor's newest question it made Nerida look down at her own wand. Her wand was made out of wood she was about to suggest oak when Penelope did it first. Hmm what were other woods looking around she saw a Blackthorn tree. There could be chance that it was the wood. Giving it a chance, "Is Blackthorn one? she suggested after raising her hand. |
Alyssa listened as the Professor explained what Ogham Staves were and how they were used. Then Professor Elwood asked the class what types of trees could be used in the Ogham Staves reading. Alyssa thought of the various tree wood that were used in Wands and waited as the others gave their answers before she raised her hand to give her answer. "I remember reading that the wood of the Rowan tree is long known for aid and protection against enchantments. Could that be used as one of the Ogham Staves?" |
Jory listened to the Professor as she explained what the staves were used for and the students, who started listing a tree each. He raised his hand after Alyssa. "Professor, can Cherry be one?'' he asked. |
Taylor thought about what the teacher said and then about the different woods. She listen to a few of the students as well and raised her hand, "If I am not mistaken, Professor, couldn't the Elder tree be used?" She knew that was an important wood in her heritage so why not give it a shot and she might of heard it somewhere in some history book but then again history wasnt her strong suit. |
So Ogham Staves not a person? Okay. He made a mental note about that. Thank Merlin he didn't humiliate himself by answering the previous question. And apparently it was used by the ancient Celtic diviners using sticks and bits of wood. Another ancient lesson. Sigh. He tried to listened to Professor explanation about the Ogham thingy. The same type of trees for wood that would be in some of your all's wands? What type of wood his wand was again? Scymymore. Scacamore. Soramore. Sycamore. That's it. He raised his hand up in the air. "How about Sycamore wood, Professor?" |
"Birch wood?" put in Sarah. She meanwhile wrote down all what the professor had said about the Ogham type of divanition. This tree stuff did sound 'BARKING' mad... |
Nigel did not know that this many types of trees existed. But now he had to think of a type of tree. He did know a little about Wandlore to help him out. Plus he did not care if his answer was already said. "Professor, is one type Yew?" |
