Divination Lesson 2 (Lithomancy)

Divination Lesson Two

December has reached Hogwarts Castle and it's grounds in full force and in many places behind the stone walls, the cold seeps in like a ghost in the night but not the Divination Tower. Despite the hieght and tower windows, the Divination classroom and office have not been warmer. Professor Elwood's window coverings matched with the roaring fires in the grates have kept the place at a stuffy yet comfortable temperature for learning.

When you enter the classroom you will find Professor Elwood sitting at her desk waiting for the kids to enter. You may notice that on the wooden desk before the blonde Professor there is a bowl of stones, both mundane and semi-precious, glittering in the candle light.

Please take a seat and wait for the lesson to begin.

Divination. D-D-Divination.

Lalala.

Blue climbed up into the tower, a heavy cloak on to keep warm. Turns out, she didn't need it. The heat hit her as soon as she entered. Ahh luffly. Blue beamed. "Hello Professor." Yes, Professor Elwood was deffinetly one of her FAVOURITE professors. Yusirieeee.

Blue glanced at the stones on the desk.

WHAT WERE THEY FOOOR?

The ickle firstie toddled over to a seat and sat down.

Gah, this was sooo exciting.

Another divination lesson meant another trip to the tower from the kitchen level. That was a LOT of walking for the second year but she didn't mind. When she finally arrived at the classroom, she entered and was relieved that it was warm. She was having quite the time dealing with the cold weather and it was always hard trying to sit through a class while freezing.

On her way by the Professor's desk, Ella stopped and smiled at the woman. "Hey Professor Elwood!" She greeted cheerfully. Oh! And what were those stones? Ella looked at them curiously for a moment before finding herself a seat. She noted the little first year, Blue, who had been involved in the snowball fight and waved at the girl.

oh its Erik ok 06-04-2012 05:04 PM

Nigel liked the last Divination class in where they built carts and raced them and wondered what they would do this time. He was still unsure of Divination but thought why not. He went over to the Professor first and said "Hello, Professor Elwood"

Nigel spotted the bowl of stones soon after and wondered that they were for. But he thought they would find out soon when class started. Nigel quickly walked over to a seat and sat down waiting for class to start.

nogoodforyou 06-04-2012 05:06 PM

The journey from the dungeons to the Divination tower was never a short one. Nora was happier than ever to finally reach the classroom and, if it was possible, even happier to find that is was warm and... just fine. "Hello, professor," she smiled at professor Elwood, but her attention has been quickly caught by the stones on her desk.

What were those for?

... some sort of readings, perhaps?

Taking her eyes away from those, the girl sat down on her usual seat, waiting for the lesson to start and trying to NOT focus on the stones. But they were pretty! And more important, she was dying to know what they were for.

Vanillasweetheart 06-04-2012 05:17 PM

Chelle entered the Divination Classroom, panting because of the long walk she had had to take to get there. She was welcomed by a surprisingly warm atmosphere. She sighed as she untied her scarf, taking a seat in front. She was excited about the second Divination Lesson.

Whew. It's so warm in here. Exactly as it should be.

She greeted Professor Elwood with a smile. "Hello, Professor!" she said, chirpily and waited for the lesson to begin.

Alyssa quickly entered the Divination classroom thinking that she was late and heaved a sigh of relief when she realized that she wasn't. She saw Professor Elwood seating at her desk and walked up to her to greet her. "Hello Professor Elwood." As she was walked away she noticed a bowl of different stones on the desk. 'Hmmmm...I wonder what they're for.' Alyssa thought to herself.

She looked around finding a place to sit when she noticed Ella. She walked up to her and sat next to her, "Hi Ella, I hope you don't mind me sitting next to you." Alyssa smiled at her before taking out her journal and writing materials and sat back to wait for class to start.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-04-2012 05:41 PM

Ella was pulling things out of her bag when she noticed Alyssa sit down next to her. She smiled at the older girl and waved her hand. "Hi Alyssa, of course I don't mind." The were two of the three powerpuff girls! They had to stick together, yeah?

Lining her things on her desk, Ella made sure she had her wand in her pocket and sat back, waiting for the lesson to begin.

Princesspower 06-04-2012 05:55 PM

So here she was again in Divination. Sarah greeted the professor and sat down. What were the stones in front of the professor for?

Holmesian Feline 06-04-2012 05:57 PM

Seeing as Selina and he were back on good terms and Gideon no longer felt like he had to avoid her top subject, Gideon figured he should attend the second divination class. He had taken the OWL for it to continue on with the lessons after all, it wouldn't make sense not to take the class now. Heading up the stairs to the tower classroom, he slipped through the door and took in the location seeing as the last time he had attended a divination lesson it had been downstairs.

"Good day Professor," he greeted with a polite nod. The prefect then moved further inside and took a seat at one of the empty seats.

Steelsheen 06-04-2012 06:22 PM

Vickers crossed the Ravenclaw tower and quickly made his way towards his Divinations class. As he climbed the stairs he could feel the warm drift of air coming from the classroom. He welcomed it, really he did.

When he stood in the dim classroom he passed the Professor and nodded his head politely "Hello Professor Elwood" then promptly found himself a seat. He looked around a bit more though, wondering if her pet parrot was still around.

SilverDragon 06-04-2012 06:41 PM

Silvia made the climb to the Divination tower, glad it wasn't far from the Ravenclaw dormitory. When she entered the classroom she immediately felt a blast of warmth. She sighed in relieve; she usually got cold easily. "Hello professor," she greeted as she walked over and sat down at one of the desks. She eyed the bowl of stones, wondering what they would be doing with them.

Emzily 06-04-2012 08:32 PM

Divination... not his favourite subject, but worth attending at least.

Theodore dragged himself to the classroom and immediately appreciated the warmth of the room. SO WARM. He skipped over and took a seat next to Blue, offering her a BEAM, too. He wouldn't shout her name, though. Theo didn't like chatting during classes.

"Hi, professor." HI.

Cedric 06-04-2012 08:44 PM

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

Favorite class, right meow.

With a smile plastered across his face, Paulie made his way into the divination classroom. "Hey, Professor Elwood," he greeted, while he set his books and bag at his desk. The Gryffindor pulled out his chair and sat down as he remarked, "Ya know, I was thinkin'.. I'm pretty sure Professor Scabior has the lightest tread in the history of mankind, or something. I have this theory that he doesn't walk, but that he hovers." Or maybe he walks on a very thin margin of air. Hmm. Either way, he'd been as silent as a mouse when he snuck up on them in Hogsmeade!

As he pulled out some ink and parchment from his bookbag, he noticed the bowl of stones. Ooh. Hopefully this lesson would be as good as the last.

Rosa Chispa Princessa 06-04-2012 09:13 PM

Oichi headed up to the divination tower wrapped in a heavy warm coat and ascended the ladder into the divinations classroom. She opened the door. and instantly felt warmth that she was not expecting. She felt herself start to sweat and removed her coat. It seems magic can change the temperature, awesome! "Hey professor, it's nice and toasty here, I love it!". And with that Oichi took a seat and waited for class to start.

SilverTiger 06-04-2012 09:34 PM

Oddly, the warm air filtering down the ladder to the Divination tower only made Stella realize she'd not exactly been dressed for the weather outside. She hadn't been planning on going outside anyway, even though the castle let in enough freezing air that it was rather cool everywhere else, but the fact it seemed the tower was warm just emphasized that and made her temporarily colder as she'd climbed the ladder. Of course, it wasn't exactly her fault that most of her warm things were packed for the holidays, beyond her father's cardigan and the coat she planned on wearing when she left for London and then France.

At least she warmed up as soon as she reached the classroom, and she smiled at Professor Elwood. "Good day, Professor," she said, only briefly glancing at the stones on her desk as she headed for an open seat kind of between where Paulie and Vickers were seated. "Are you looking forward to the holidays?," she continued, still addressing the professor. It wasn't entirely relevant to divination, but the lesson hadn't started yet. Therefore she'd be polite, and considering the holidays were on her mind, that was what came out.

Lissy Longbottom 06-04-2012 09:44 PM

This STUPID tower...Alex was never ever going to get used to climbing up it every time it was time for Divination class. Pant pant pant. Why couldn't Divination be on a normal floor?? The professor probably just wanted to seem all mystical and stuff by holding class in a tower. So silly.

"Good day Professor," Alex said, taking a deep breath and trying to look like he wasn't about to DIE of an asthma attack as he took his seat.

AlwaysDance 06-04-2012 09:58 PM

Addie skipped up to the Divination tower excited for class to start. It was sure to be an interesting class, after all they did make wagons the class before.

Addie found her way to the tower and walked into the classroom taking note of the pretty stones on the professors desk. "Hello Professor Elwood," she said with a bright smile as she took a seat in the warm and toasty classroom. "How are you today?" Hopefully the Professor was good and ready to make another exciting class that Addie would love. After all this was one of the classes that she liked a lot due to what they did in the class.

Deezerz 06-04-2012 10:07 PM

Kennedy made his way to Divination. He had made the mistake to go down to the Slytherin boy dorms to get a book and now he had climbed all the stairs up to the seventh floor. He wheezed as he finally reached the last stair. Gosh, they needed to get some elevators it'd make getting to class effortless and more comfortable for his now aching lungs.

Catching his breath, he stepped into the classroom and was rewarded by warmth. Ah. He stepped over to one of the front desks and set his book bag on it then sat down. "Good day, Professor Elwood," he greeted with a smile. Yes, even if he had almost ran out of air Kennedy was in a good mood.

JeshieRAWR 06-04-2012 11:41 PM

It was the second lesson of Divination and for once, Jade was actually looking forward to it.

The Gryffindor walked into the classroom, feeling the warm air hit her all at once as she did so. It felt extremely comfortable and she was glad they weren't having class outside like Professor Bentley had done. She waved to the Professor and said, "Hello, Professor Elwood." She gave a smile and took a seat as she waited for everyone to do the same.

The brunette glanced around as she waited, seeing the stones on Professor Elwood's desk and she tilted her head. What were they going to do with stones?

Kimalia 06-04-2012 11:47 PM

Oh, a second Divination lesson.. Kimalia had entered in the classroom following the others. She was unsure on how this lesson would turn out after the last one's fiasco from where she ended up at by the end... Well, maybe it won't be as bad. Smiling as she approached the desk. "Hello again, Professor Elwood.." Before making her way to take a seat.

sweetpinkpixie 06-05-2012 12:07 AM

Okay, so maybe Divination wasn't SO bad a subject. The last lesson had been a bit more exciting than Kurumi had expected it to, but that was mostly due to the fact that there had been no guess work last lesson. It had been entirely hands on and without needing to use one's Inner Eye - or lack thereof in most cases.

Entering the room, Kurumi was surprised at how warm it was and regretted wearing her winter robes. Walking up to her usual seat, Kurumi bowed her head shyly towards Professor Elwood. "Good day, professor," she said with a small smile. Hopefully now the woman knew that Kurumi hadn't been trying to prank the Headmaster, yeah? As Kurumi took her seat, she slipped out of her outermost robe and hung it over her seat. There, that was better.

Jessiqua 06-05-2012 12:12 AM

Zhenya went to the second Divination lesson, happy that she could finally enjoy the lesson. No more click clack of those ridiculous hooves, or the half man. No, it was a full human this year! She smiled and said "Hello Professor," before taking a seat. She had noticed that there were some sparkling things at the front, but she wasn't sure what they were. She didn't want to go up and have a look at them. What were they though? Glitter? Diamonds?

magikewe 06-05-2012 01:27 AM

Quickly, Lily rushed up the stairs to the Divination tower, trying not to be late for the class. It was never good to be late, even if it was only by half a minute. So she rushed up the stairs, breaking into a sweat by the time she reached the door. Almost late... She thought as she adjusted her robes before entering the classroom. "Hello Professor... How are you today?" She managed to say before stumbling to find a seat. Those stairs were killer... Maybe I should do them more often for Quidditch fitness... Lily thought to herself as she pulled out her parchment and quill.

Anna Banana 06-05-2012 01:30 AM

Divination class. Yippy Skippy. Can you sense the excitement in that?! [/sarcasm] Sierra smirked to herself as she approached the entrance to the Divination classroom. She wasn't the greatest fan of Divination, but at least it wasn't as bad a Arithmancy and Ancient Runes. She literally loathed those two classes.

At least the classroom seemed warm, which was a vast improvement from the air outside. Walking further in the room in search of a seat, Sierra passed by the professor's desk, eyeing the stones that sat there. Yup. Divination materials. "Hello, Professor," she said, and then she turned and took a nearby seat.

PadfootAndTheWolf 06-05-2012 01:40 AM

SPOILER!!: All the happy students!

As Callie waited for the students to arrive she had been looking at the bowl of stones on the desk but quickly lifted her eyes to see the first of the kids arrive, the little Ravenclaw that had come to her office after the first lesson asking how to become a Seer.

Glad to see that the girl seemed to be in high spirits, Callie smiled and gave her a greeting in return. "Hello Blue." That was her name right? She had mentioned it when they talked.

"Oh hello there Paulie, good to see you again." Professor Elwood like the Head Boy. He had been polite and well mannered in her last lesson and after they had run into each other in Hogsmeade the other day he had seemed to be quite the little gentleman and whatnot.

A theory, huh? She listened and when he finished she giggled. "Well, I shall have to ask him about that. Professor Scabior may be tricking us all with his hovering, he must be trying to beat us all down to the Great Hall for meals."

"Good day to you too, are you alright?" She was just slightly concerned that she was going to have to call the Healer up here for him.

"Hello Kurumi, glad to see you haven't given up on the subject." She scrunched up her nose in a grin and showed her teeth, trying to supress a chuckle. She had remembered how the girl had answered a quetion or two in the previous lesson with not too much positives about the stuff.

"Hello dear, go ahead and take a seat and we will start soon." The class was starting to get pretty full after all. She couldn't keep them waiting to see what was going to happen today.

How are you today?" She managed to say before stumbling to find a seat. Those stairs were killer... Maybe I should do them more often for Quidditch fitness... Lily thought to herself as she pulled out her parchment and quill.

Another out of breath student.

She walked those stairs everyday and never got that out of breath. Maybe she should make them run up and down a few times? Nah. No time. "Welcome dear, I am doing fine. Yourself?"

"Welcome Prefect Greingoth." Callie smiled to the girl. She may not have enjoyed herself as much as Professor Elwood would have hoped but she had helped her out in the fiasco of a wagon in a tree.

Now that the students had all filled into the room from the trapdoor in the floor, Professor Elwood closed it and walked back to her desk where she stopped and leaned against it's front.

As she greeted them all she stuck a hand into the bowl of stones and pulled out a handfull, and held it out for them to see. In her palm were some clear shiney stones, a few red ones, a dark blue one, and some regular looking brown ones. "Does anyone have any idea what we might use these stones for in a Divination lesson?" Zhenya didn't know what those stones for, let alone why they were using them. What were they? She sheepishly raised her hand and said "Erm... using stones in Divination could help uh... with locating energy," she guessed. She knew that some people used stones in massages to help with centering the person, or something... maybe they could be used to help locate energy in the future. Shaking her head, she decided to just listen to what all the other students thought.

"Hello there Miss Bishop." It was good to see some of the younger students here, excited to learn about Divination. It made her smile.

"Welcome, good to see you again." Professor Elwood nodded at the boy as he took a seat.

As a Slytherin came in and greeted her, the blonde couldn't help but notice the attention the stones had created for her students. "Hello there, good to see you again." She said kindly to the girl she recognized from the last lesson.

Oh someone was excited to learn!

"Hello there, come on in and take a seat!" Callie chirped right back.

"Hello again. Welcome, welcome." The blonde professor said politely as she watched the Hufflepuff girl take a seat beside her friend.

A small nod and smile went to the Gryffindor girl as she quietly entered the room and took a seat.

The next Gryffindor to enter the room was one she didn't recongnize from her lessons but had passed some in the corridors and in the Great Hall; he had a Prefect's badge on his robes.

"Welcome Mister Prefect, you must be Kurumi's partner for Gryffindor House. It's good to have another one of Hogwart's leaders in my Divination class." She hadn't seen him in her first lesson but that was a while back and he was here now.

The next boy to enter after the Prefect was one of the crew that had flipped their wagon into the tree.

"Welcome back Mister Vickers. I trust you won't be throwing anything into the trees from way up here, correct?" She said with a teasing tone and a smile. She noticed him looking around but couldn't think of what he was possibly looking for.

"Hello there dear, its good to see you again." the Divination professor smiled as the girl took her seat.

Watching the small boy practically bounce across the room into his seat and give her an enthusiastic 'hi', Callie returned one to him and watched as he looked at the stones.

"Glad you like it. I can't stand how cold this Castle gets in some places." She said with a nod towards the fireplace that was sending waves of heat into the Classroom.

Calista turned away from the Gryffindor commenting on the room's temperature and then faced the Ravenclaw girl entering the room now. "Oh hello there dear. I am looking forward to the holidays, are you?" She didn't have any major plans but to stay at the Castle mostly, possibly go to Diagon Alley some or visit a few friends.

The trapdoor flung open and regurgitated a Hufflepuff boy who was gasping slightly as if he had been chased the whole way here.

"Good day to you too, are you alright?" She was just slightly concerned that she was going to have to call the Healer up here for him.

"Hello. I am doing quite well, thank you. I actually just got back from a walk around the grounds. It's so lovely up here in the Winter." She smiled at the girl and then looked to see who else was filing in.

The next student to arrive was the male Slytherin Prefect, the one she remembered from the previous lesson, Seirra's partner. "Hello Prefect Escalante."

More people to stare at the stones. heh.

"Welcome dear, we will be starting soon." she nodded at the Gryffindor.

Oh....here was Kimalia, the girl who liked to jump from trees.

"Miss Fanster, it's good to see you again, and I guess congratualtions are in order on your win against Hufflepuff Captain." She smiled and nodded for her to take her seat.

"Hello Kurumi, glad to see you haven't given up on the subject." She scrunched up her nose in a grin and showed her teeth, trying to supress a chuckle. She had remembered how the girl had answered a quetion or two in the previous lesson with not too much positives about the stuff.

"Hello everyone and welcome to Divination Lesson Two on this cold dreary day. Thankfully we have some heat built up in this tower so we won't freeze to death while trying to learn." Surely the poor Slytherin kids were happier than the rest having a respite from their no doubt frigid dungeons.

"Aye, I am," Gideon confirmed as the professor returned his greeting and spoke of his position. The sixth year softly smiling as loosly thanked him for his appearance as a school leader. He went to take out some parchment and a quill as Professor Elwood greeted the rest of those students who entered and said hello to her, returning his attention to the front when the class was begin in ernest.

Oh..there had been stones there, the prefect hadn't noticed them in the bowl or the bowl itself on the desk. He had been meerly settling in. Gideon tried to think of what they could be doing, an idea popping to mind of something he thought to have read in passing. oh its Erik ok 06-05-2012 01:53 AM

Nigel was just sitting at his desk starting off into space wondering what those glittering rocks where for. When he heard the Professor ask the question to what he was just thinking. How weird Nigel thought.

The rocks were really interesting to Nigel because he still had no idea what they were for. But he could take a guess. "Umm Professor maybe the awesome glittering stones are for finding lost things"

sweetpinkpixie 06-05-2012 01:57 AM

Kurumi blushed slightly at Professor Elwood's response to her, chewing on her lip absently. Kurumi had actually considered dropping the subject, but she was still trying to keep her options open for after Hogwarts. However, her conversation with Professor Williamson had pretty much set her straight and she really didn't need Divination anymore...but all fields of magic were somehow related, so, here she was.

Rather reluctantly.

When Professor Elwood showed them a handful of small stones, Kurumi leaned forward in her seat a bit to try and get a better look at them. Was there any connection to the color? Probably not, or if there was it was in some abstract way that meant more guesswork. Pfft. Still, Kurumi was reminded of another subject...one where they used stones at one point but used wood more often than not.

Slowly, but with purpose to a certain extent, Kurumi raised her hand. "Are we...going to use them to create Divination's form of an rune set?" Kurumi chewed on her lip before continuing, although Professor Elwood really didn't have to hear what she said next. "Or playing Divine marbles." You know, the sort where you used your Inner Eye to throw them or some other ridiculous notion like that.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-05-2012 02:03 AM

Ella eyed the stones the professor was holding curiously. Hmmm. What could stones like that be used for in relation to Divination? Well Ella had read that people sometimes read tea leaves. Maybe they could read stones as well? "Professor, I was thinking about tea leaves and how they create shapes at the bottom of the cup...like symbols. Do the stones do something similar? Maybe if you shook them up and let them fall or something? Then you could um-read there meaning."

FireboltAvis88 06-05-2012 02:09 AM

Alyssa thought for awhile before raising her hand. "Professor, could we be doing some kind of reading using the stones and semi precious stones you are holding in your hand. I believe that it's called Lithomancy."

"Each stone represents something. Like the planets or something like that."

His eyes widened a bit and blushed a tad deeply "N-No Ma'am I wont-- cant, not from here." Well he didnt throw anything at trees last time either, he fell on the ground and nearly knocked himself unconscious and the next thing he knew, the wagon was in a tree. Luckily too.

Ah but now to the task at hand. His eyes went to the stones on the bowl and now in her hand. There was Divination using stones? He had a blank look on his face, because the first thing in his head had stones remotely related to Divination were Runes pieces. And he didnt see their Runes Professor to indicate this was a joint class.

A tentative hand goes up "Professor, could we be making a talisman out of those?" Plenty of such items used gemstones or some kind of exotic piece from nature.

Anna Banana 06-05-2012 04:03 AM

Sierra craned her neck to see what was going on in the front of the room. She watched as the professor showed the different types of stones she had. She'd heard about something similar to this before. Actually, she'd heard about a few types of divination using stones. "Well, Professor, some people have already mentioned Lithomancy," she said, raising her hand, "but there's also gem stone divination." It really could be either at this point.

FearlessLeader19 06-05-2012 04:49 AM

After looking intently at the various coloured stones, Jory raised his hand. "We can probably use them to make predictions by assigning something to each stone, like Alyssa said, the planets for example.'' he said.

Vanillasweetheart 06-05-2012 05:26 AM

Does anyone have any idea what we might use these stones for in a Divination lesson?

Chelle paused for a moment to think. She had read about something called 'Lithomancy' in a book, a really long time back. If she remembered correctly, every stone had a different symbol and every symbol could be interpreted to give a different meaning. She wasn't sure if that was what they were going to do that day, but she decided to give it a shot.

"Professor, I had once read about how stones had different symbols which could be interpreted in different ways. This is called 'Lithomancy'," she answered, nervously.

Was that correct? Or did I just embarrass myself?

Que puzzled frown.

:whaa:

Blue did NOT know this one. She was a first year, for Merlin's sake people. She wasn't going to know everything. But she could guess everything. Like how she guess that the world was actually flat and the Columbus lied. Blue raised her hand. "Professor Elwood, I think we're gonna use the pretty stones to create sparks and use the sparks to tell ther futah." Obviously it would be a very difficult task but it was magic after all.

BEAM.

She had obviously said the right thing.

Obviously.

Hehe.

"Instead of palm reading - stone reading."

tiffyteddy 06-05-2012 08:48 AM

Different colors of stones.

Tiffany had no idea with this kind of thing. She got nothing from her memories of methods that involved stones. So she decided to look up in her book. She flipped it randomly and searched from line to line. Then...she got it!

"It was Lithomancy,"she answered."The methods that due with stones."

Stones. Theodore closed his eyes tightly for a moment, then opened them.

Stupid. Questions were stupid.

Nonetheless, he held his hand up into the air, "Are we building a stone patio today? To go around our fortune teller carts?" It was a long shot, and from listening on to the other students, Theodore soon realized that he was probably wrong.

hjhm 06-05-2012 12:26 PM

ack. Been here all the time.

The first question was up and Jonathan's head, snapped at the Professor when he asked about the stones. Jonathan looked at the stones, what could they use with these that connects with Divination. He has heard of this before. Was it taken up once on a lecture about 2 or 3 terms ago? No? Jonathan completely have forgotten. Uhmmm, it has something to do with Lit-something, Lyco--- nope. Not that...

Aha!

Jonathan's hand shot up to answer "Professor, the stones can be used for Lithomancy" as he can recall.

vijaya 06-05-2012 02:12 PM

Zack was very quite since he entered the class. He wasn't in much of a good mood but divination being one of his favorite subjects he thought this would make his mood better. He felt his mood change when the class was finally started.

He looked at the stones showed by professor and something clicked in his mind. He knew this one. He knew stones were used in divination as well. He quickly raised his hand and said "Professor just like in ancient runes, stones can also be used in divinaio. Just like to know their daily horoscope. It is called Lithomancy" he said bring his hand down.

Ooh. Hopefully this lesson would be as good as the last.

...

Aspen tried to ignore the Head Boy. Like, in general and always, ignore him. It was best for Ravenclaw.

But really.

Really.

He made it impossible. She turned and LOOKED at him for his question, for his speaking, for his THEORY. Pah. She made a note in her notebook, another gem of dialogue from the Head Boy.

Aspen was glad that this was West's friend. Though it was said sincerely from the young Slytherin, Aspen liked his answer best. Hers was similar.

"Aren't we using the stones to make jewelry for ourselves, since the most important part of Divination is looking the part?"
asked the Odessa with a perfect poker face. She put her hand down and did her best not to grin. Aspen knew she shouldn't have said a word, but well... sometimes she just couldn't help herself.

"The stones can probably be used For Lithomancy. As we are in the British Isles, will we be using 13 stones?" Sarah inquired.

Expecto-Penguin 06-05-2012 04:31 PM

Annabelle looked at the stones. She was thinking about why they would use the stones. "Hmm Professor, could they use the stones for some type of energy?"

João raised his hand, though his questions had no similar points with the previous answers. Maybe he was the wrong one? In any case...

"A talisman is a great guess and would definately be fun, but not what we are doing today Mister Vickers." She nodded politely at the boy before moviing on to the next student.

"Well, Professor, some people have already mentioned Lithomancy," she said, raising her hand, "but there's also gem stone divination." It really could be either at this point.

"Gem stone Divination is a good idea and is very similar to what we are doing but we are going to stick with the basic Lithomancy for this lesson. Gem stone Divination not only has a few different ways to read the stones it also, the name sort of gives that away, only uses gem stones and is more strict with what stone can be used as which." She would keep in mind the other variations and such for furture lessons possibly or to add to her notes for them to look at.

"Lithomancy is what we are doing today, what you read about is correct." She grinned proudly at the Ravenclaw and turned to the next student.

Hmmm....

"Well, we won't be making the stones spark, but we are reading them. Their position when the fall is what will make up our readings." The young girl was definately interested it seemed.

Tiffany had no idea with this kind of thing. She got nothing from her memories of methods that involved stones. So she decided to look up in her book. She flipped it randomly and searched from line to line. Then...she got it!

"It was Lithomancy,"she answered."The methods that due with stones."

Watching the Gryffindor girl searching in her book, she nodded when she found the answer and gave it. "Good work, yes, Lithomancy is what we are going today."

Nonetheless, he held his hand up into the air, "Are we building a stone patio today? To go around our fortune teller carts?" It was a long shot, and from listening on to the other students, Theodore soon realized that he was probably wrong.

This boy made Calista laugh.

After a small chuckle, the Divination Professor spoke to him, reassuring him that they were not going to be building anything else for a while. "No, we won't be building any patios, but you may certainly do that in your off time if you'd like."

Jonathan's hand shot up to answer "Professor, the stones can be used for Lithomancy" as he can recall.

"That is correct Mister Kim." Callie nodded at the Slytherin's answer.

"Lithomancy is what we are doing today but usually it isn't used for daily readings but for a longer period of time. There are some smaller readings for shorter periods of time but they typically aren't as accurate." The Gryffindor had been on the right track.

Sarcasm was NOT appreciated. Only when she, the Professor, did it. She had used it when doing that part of the last lesson to make a point of how dressing WASN'T really the most important part just what many people thought.

"No Miss Odessa, we are not making jewelry. And I am glad you remember the superficial mistake that many people make when thinking about Divination."

Callie looked at the Ravenclaw girl, Aspen Odessa, the one some of the other Professors had mentioned in passing for being rather bright.

"That is the basic idea, yes. Although we sort of just let them fall, throwing won't be necessary." Callie certainly didn't want them to throw rocks in her classroom, there were too many things to be broken doing that; kids might get hurt too.

"Great guesses everyone but those of you who said Lithomancy are correct. Today we are going to learn how to perform this sect of Divination and how do a basic reading." She allowed the stones to fall out of her hand and back into the bowl. "Firstly to do a reading you will need a stone set that we will take care of in just a moment. The actual process of doing the reading is like what some of you mentioned before by tossing the stones into a circle made of string that will act as our field." She paused to allow them to copy it down if they wanted.

"Once the stones are in the feild we will read them by their position. Now before we get too far ahead of ourselves into the actual reading, let's stay focussed on the stones. If you notice I have both semi-precious and regular stones mixed together in this bowl, varying in different colors." She lifted the bowl for them to see the variety. "So unlike Gem Divination like Miss Greingoth mentioned, the stones you chose to represent the ones in your set can be more of a personal preference rather than a locked in, regulated pattern."

Now onto the question that would lead them into further understanding. "A few of you mentioned planets and other things being represented by the stones but they also represent other things much like the numbers in an Arithmancy reading. There are 13 of them in total and I would like you to please tell me one of the stones and what you think it would represent."

Nigel was hoping that his answer could have a little truth in it. But after hearing everybody else said Lithomancy. He knew he was wrong. But couldn't there be a spell that helped you find lost things. There just had to be, they were in Hogwarts after all. Well whatever, Nigel started taking notes on everything she said and wondered if he made up a stone would it be alright.

"Professor, There is the Sun Stone and it represents power, energy and life." He wondered if there actually was a sun stone

RachieRu 06-05-2012 06:28 PM

Oooh. Indy knew this. With a big smile on her face Indy thought for a few moments before she raised her hand. She was really liking divination. It was so cool. She was hoping they'd to build funky wagon's again another time. Hopefully this time she wouldn't like nearly die though. Because that would be pretty tragic. Oh yes. Back to the question. Figuring that her hand was already iin the air Indy just started talking. "The Earth stone..." She mused with a smile before she continued. "It represents security of home, family and friend."

Lollipop! 06-05-2012 06:30 PM

Um, um, um.

Gosh daaarn iiiit. She was gonna talk 'bout the sun stone. Pouty face. Blue flicked through the textbook quickly, searching for another stone. She did it so fast she got a PAPER CUT. NOOOOOOES. :whaa: But Blue, cause she was brave like that, answered the question despite the pain. "Umm, Professor, I think the fire stone is um heat and passion." Heat was probably wrong and it felt like she was missing some thing else.

Ah well.

She made a vow not to speak in this class again.

Oichi raised her hand and responded, "Theres the spirit stone professor. It represents the needs of self and for communication with the divine.".

Alyssa tried to remember what she had read about Lithomancy and what the 13 stones represented. When she remembered she raised her hand and said,"Professor one of the 13 stones is the Mars stone which represents - courage, defensive magic, battle, or conflict."

Princesspower 06-05-2012 06:57 PM

So there were 13 stones. Sarah wondered if in other countries there were more. "There is the Air stone which represents Wishes, hopes, dreams and inspiration". she said. She was an airy fairy person at times, and
reality is often cruel to her after her countless daydreams and planning.

Talikins 06-05-2012 06:58 PM

Stones, this seemed rather interesting. Crossing her legs underneathe her desk, the red head listened intently to the lesson. So the Professor was going on about some divination done with stones. Ness pouted as she tried to remember the word the Professor had used. What was it again? Or right it was 'Lithomancy'. The red head immiediately jotted this down on some parchment, now she would hopefully remember.

Hmmm..13 stones. The pout on Nessie's face grew. Surely she'd know at least one right. Then she remebered someone once talking to her about this or well a certain stone at least. "Um..Professor, I think there's a stone Venus and if I remember correctly its associated with love, fidelity and happiness?" It was more of a question, cause Nessie herself wasn't too sure if it was true or not. Hopefully it was and hopefully she hadn't made a full of herself by talking utter rubbish.

Okay... the thirteen stones.

Thinking about it, Nora actually read something about those! You know, since Divination was not an easy subject and Nora was such a curious little creature, she liked satisfying that disturbing curiosity of hers. "There is the Moon," she said with a hand in the air, "and it represents inspiration, intuition, and psychic ability." Too bad the last one didn't start with an I, so they could be called the three I's. It would have been cool, and easier to remember.

Magical Soul 06-05-2012 07:19 PM

Louisa found this interesting. More interesting than wearing Gypsy clothes and pretend to be fortune tellers any ways. Hearing other students' answers, she quickly looked down at the textbook and shot her arm in the air. "There's Saturn stone, too, professor." Louisa looked up into the woman's face with an amused smile, "Represents longevity, protection, and purification."

Holmesian Feline 06-05-2012 07:30 PM

Lithomancy...right, the prefect marking down the correct word in his notes. At least he had been on the right track with the correct idea if not the correct spelling and pronunciation. Gideon listened to the rest of the students ideas and answers, several of them the same as him guessing the subject they would be working on correctly. And then when Professor Elwood moved on to explain a little more about the subject he had to say it certainly sounded interesting even if he wasn't normally one to be too into the idea.

Gideon turned to the subject in their textbook to try and pick a stone to answer the latest question with, listening to those appeared more knowledgeable on the subject who were already answering. "Theres the water stone which represents compassion and healing."

Oh, hmm. Well, at least Sierra had mentioned Lithomancy. That had to count as correct, right? She thought so. She eyed Aspen, who'd brought up looking the part. She had to admit that even though her answer was wrong, it was still smart of her to remember that last lesson. She got a special mention for it, at least. Ravenclaws...

...and then she heard her name, causing her to sink just a little in her seat. Thanks for pointing out my mistake, PROFESSORRRRRR! Hmph. From that point on, she listened to the description of what they really were doing. She wouldn't suggest the wrong answer again. Why couldn't Hollingberry have gotten singled out anyway?!

"There's the stone for Jupiter," she said, raising her hand. "It represents good fortune, expansiveness, and a gain of wealth and money." Sounded good to her.

StarShine 06-05-2012 09:44 PM

João didn't quite get how they would let them fall without getting them into the air first, hence the throwing into the air, but he let it pass. He wasn't going to question the logic behind this class, because there was none.

So. Stones. Lovely.

Only, he didn't know anything about them. Lovelier.

Sitting there, taking notes was the only possible activity for him, so he just did that.

SilverTiger 06-05-2012 09:47 PM

Honestly, Stella was already half lost, almost like she would have been in an ancient runes lesson. Of course, that used stones too, at least some of the time, but she flicked through her textbook quickly as she continued to take notes. She didn't want to not participate, now that she was in the class. She was hyper-aware of the fact there were other Ravenclaws who had possibly given, well, interesting answers, though, so she put some thought into if she wanted to make a guess this time around. Shefound herself raising her hand anyway, which meant that she needed to speak. She'd look stupid if she didn't, at least.

"What about Mercury? That stone represents intellect, communication, media, and even education, among other things," she said, lowering her hand hesitantly. She really wasn't entirely sure of her answer. It was said now, though, and she couldn't take it back. So back to just quietly taking notes and hoping she hadn't looked like an idiot.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-05-2012 09:55 PM

Merlin's beard! So Ella had actually been on the right track? O__O Cool beans! Apparently she wasn't as out of the loop when it came to Divination as she thought. That was a relief. And as for the 13 stones, Ella tried to decide on one so she could share its meaning. How about the air stone? The second year had read a bit about that one. "Professor, there's the air stone. It has to with wishes, inspiration, and erm-dreams!"

magikewe 06-05-2012 11:33 PM

Stones....huh...

Well, Lily wasn't all that knowledgeable in stones, so this was going to be a tricky class. Quietly, as the rest of her classmates answered the question, the redhead pulled out her textbook and her parchment and started to take notes. As people answered, Lily copied what they said into notes.

Text Cut: her notes

Air stone-wishes, inspiration, dreams
Mercury stone-intellect, communication, media, etc.
Jupiter stone- good fortune, gain of wealth, expansiveness??
water stone-healing, compassion
Saturn stone- longevity,protection, purification
Moon- inspiration, intuition, psychic ability
Venus stone- love, fidelity, happiness
Mars stone-courage, defensive magic,battle, conflict
Spirit stone- needs of self, communication with divine
Fire stone- heat, passion...

Oakey followed along with the class as much as he could and to his surprise he was understanding it little by little. He looked at the pile of stones that was sitting in front of Professor Elwood. He took to his text book and listened to some of the responses, He read the thirteen different types and settled on the one he liked the most. Professor He spoke up raising his hand There is the Universe Stone, it represents our place in the grand scheme of things, on a cosmic level.

AlwaysDance 06-05-2012 11:59 PM

Lithomancy...

Addie didn't get this type of divination, she enjoyed the dress up as fortune tellers and build wagons version. Now divination was getting hard. Addie tried to think back to reading her divination textbook. There was stuff in there about Lithomancy wasn't there. Something about planets being stones maybe? Addie was thinking about it a lot. Why hadn't her mum prepared her for this??? Then one popped into her head, Venus, love, beauty, etc. Just like the Roman goddess Venus. Addie raised her hand. "Professor isn't one Venus, and it stands for love and beauty." Right? Maybe.

sweetpinkpixie 06-06-2012 12:03 AM

Kurumi remained silent as her classmates listed off stones and their meanings. Since Kurumi had never actually studied any of this, she was sort of out of the loop when it came to possible meanings. However, as it became clear that they were simply stones that represented the planets, she felt a little more at ease. She knew about that, especially since the ones mentioned were, for the most part, associated with days of the week and that was something that was taken rather seriously in the culture she grew up in. Jotting down some notes, Kurumi couldn't help but think of a few questions and slowly raised her hand - especially since she was pretty sure that all thirteen had already been mentioned, so there was no need to repeat answers.

"Professor, why 13?" she asked, cocking her head to the side as she tried to make some sort of FACTUAL connection. "I know in some ancient cultures and beliefs that the number can represent a powerful solar symbol and ancient Egyptians believed there are thirteen steps upon the ladder that leads to eternity and when you reach that step you attain spiritual completion..." She was sort of just rambling off facts right now, grabbing at straws for some sort of connection, but she actually was genuinely curious as to why 13 stones as opposed to 12 or whatever other number.

Expecto-Penguin 06-06-2012 12:38 AM

Annabelle was hearing everyone's responses. She copied them all down into her book, she remembered the last stone that not everyone mentioned yet. Or at least she thought..."Professor isn't there the universe stone?" she asked unsure that her answer is right. "The universe stone is our place in the grand scheme of things, on a cosmic level." She heard one of her classmates ask about why was it only original 13 stones? She was curious about the answer too.

Stella & Aspen & Elwood

Oh! Well, look who showed up: his Alchemy partner! Paulie threw Stella a characteristic lopsided smile as the girl claimed a seat beside him. "Hey," he greeted simply. His eyes wandered suddenly, though, when he felt someone looking at him. And someone WAS looking at him. Glaring, more like it.

Aspen Odessa.

But, because he was in class and because he was a Hogwarts leaderrr, he only narrowed his eyes at the girl who had blew her top at him in Charms. Maybe if he caught her as they walked out of class, he would taunt her with a line or two about Cornelius and/or Joao.

The corners of his lips upturned slightly at Pirate Elwood's response to his theory. Perhaps Scabior WAS using his abilities to beat them to the Great Hall. You never know.

Anyway. He began jotting down his notes - chicken scratch if you ever saw it. It seemed as though all the other students had already contributed the thirteen different types of stones, though, so Paulie didn't want to be redundant. OR look like he wasn't paying attention to his classmates. Hence, he simply finished listing the thirteen stones and their meanings and resolved to answer her next question before everyone else beat him to it.

Locating energy? Professor Elwood thought for a moment over the Slytherin girl's answer but had to shake her head. "Not exactly, but a good guess."

Calista turned and called on the Gryffindor Prefect she had just met a few minutes ago and listened to his answer, which was slightly off. Perhaps he had just mispoke?

"Not litmacy but Lithomancy. Close enough though, perhaps you just read the word wrong?"

Oh the ideas children come up with. Callie couldn't help but smile.

"No, unfortunately these stones will not help us find our lost things but wouldn't that be nice?"

"Yes, that's a really good way of putting it Kurumi!"

She should have known the Prefect would see what it was they were doing, the blonde had heard that Professor Jenkins had done lots of handson stuff with them in Runes. She didn't catch the marbes comment though.

"Excellent thoughts Miss Bishop, we will be tossing these stones and dechipering their shapes and position." It was quite the guess but correct. The young Hufflepuff was actually on the right track.

"Good Miss Potter." Another well researched answer from the Hufflepuff girl. She even got the part where things were represented.

"It certainly does have to do with Lithomancy Miss Reed." Callie nodded at the Slytherin because really it had EVERYTHING to do with Lithomancy.

Bird Patterns?

Callie looked at the girl for a minute trying to think of how that would be used for that. Did they throw the stones at the poor birds?! "No, that is not what these stones are for but good guess."

"A talisman is a great guess and would definately be fun, but not what we are doing today Mister Vickers." She nodded politely at the boy before moviing on to the next student.

"Yes, good." She nodded at the Hufflepuff boy and his answer.

"Lithomancy is what we are doing today, what you read about is correct." She grinned proudly at the Ravenclaw and turned to the next student.

Hmmm....

"Well, we won't be making the stones spark, but we are reading them. Their position when the fall is what will make up our readings." The young girl was definately interested it seemed.

Watching the Gryffindor girl searching in her book, she nodded when she found the answer and gave it. "Good work, yes, Lithomancy is what we are going today."

This boy made Calista laugh.

After a small chuckle, the Divination Professor spoke to him, reassuring him that they were not going to be building anything else for a while. "No, we won't be building any patios, but you may certainly do that in your off time if you'd like."

She allowed the stones to fall out of her hand and back into the bowl.

OCC: So please only give ONE stone and it's meaning so everyone can participate.

EDIT: Yes, I know I've seen some sites that say 16 stones but we are going with the original 13. I will make a definate list before we move on. ;)

He nodded his head, making a talisman would've been awesome, but the blank face returned when the Professor said they were were tackling Lithomancy... which he had no clue what it was about. He continued scribbling on his parchment, listening to the Professor and what the other students were saying who seems to know a whole lot more than he did. When the Professor asked what stones meant what even his quill fell silent. Those stones meant something? The only thing he remotely knew about stones were those that supposedly corresponded to people's birthdays which he didnt put much stock in

SilverDragon 06-06-2012 03:38 AM

Silvia wrote down a few notes. Okay, so Lithomancy was divination with stones, and each of the thirteen stones represents something. But what they were called and what they represented she had no clue. The young Ravenclaw really didn't know anything about Lithomancy, or many forms of divination for that matter, seeing as she had never really studied or thought much of the subject before. She had only chosen to take it this year on a whim and to see how things went. So for now she settled for just taking notes.

So he was right about Lithomancy. It's good that he can still recall some of his Divination knowledge, however the tiny problem within it is that, Jonathan couldn't really grasp Divination as a subject. He finds it hard to understand the every single detail of each stone, card reading, etc... It's harder than what people really think. Well, to him it is difficult.

Please tell me one of the stones and what you think it would represent.

Jonathan thought of this through. What were they again? The professor did mention about the planets and technically some students already did. Jonathan raised his hand recklessly without even thinking it "The Water stone, professor" opppps. What did it mean again? Jonathan took a tiny time to give it a thought and finally remembered "It's reconciliation, cleansing and healing" he said in a more confused tone, not really sure if that answer is correct. But it's worth the try. Definitely.

As she greeted them all she stuck a hand into the bowl of stones and pulled out a handfull, and held it out for them to see. In her palm were some clear shiney stones, a few red ones, a dark blue one, and some regular looking brown ones. "Does anyone have any idea what we might use these stones for in a Divination lesson?" Not a hard question just a thinker

Nerida smiled at Professor Elwood, to be honest she loved Divination, but this cold was going to kill her. Eyeing the stones she suddenly thought so something she had read. Professor is it Lithomancy, I read that you can tell the future with stones.

Well whatever, Nigel started taking notes on everything she said and wondered if he made up a stone would it be alright.

"Professor, There is the Sun Stone and it represents power, energy and life." He wondered if there actually was a sun stone

"Very good, the sun stone is certainly one and like you said represents power because of it's nature of being the most powerful object in our solar system." She nodded as she wrote it on the board, starting her list.

Ah well.

Heh. Passion such a...strange topic to discuss in a classroom full of kids.

"Yes, but don't forget willpower and outside influences. Good." The Ravenclaw was basically right, definately good work from a first year.

And then she promptly broke it.

"The Universe," Aspen spoke with a quiet, slightly bored tone. "It represents how small and insignificant we all really are in a comparative way. We're a speck, a flicker."

Despite the obvious sarcasm she had just heard escape Miss Odessa's mouth, Callie was appreciative of the correct answer coming next. "Very good. Although it doesn't have to seem so depressing, it mainly shows us our place in the grand scheme of things." Another stone to add to the master list.

"Good, Venus is represented with love. Being that the planet was named after the goddess of the same thing and our own planet and Venus being sisters, it only seems fitting." She nodded slowly and put it on the list. Good Hufflepuff.

"Great job Miss Reed. The moon, although it is not a planet, is very important to our readings." She smiled at the Slytherin before adding it too, to the list.

Louisa looked up into the woman's face with an amused smile, "Represents longevity, protection, and purification."

"Good job, water has always been related to Healing throughout many forms of magic, especially Divination." The Divination Professor nodded quickly and added it to the list on the board.

"It represents good fortune, expansiveness, and a gain of wealth and money." Sounded good to her.[/QUOTE]

She didn't want to not participate, now that she was in the class.

"Yes, Mercury is very important!" Professor Elwood added it to the list quickly before going on. "This tiny planet is representing so many fine things for our self improvement and and communication with others we wouldn't want to leave it out."

Why hadn't her mum prepared her for this??? Then one popped into her head, Venus, love, beauty, etc. Just like the Roman goddess Venus. Addie raised her hand. "Professor isn't one Venus, and it stands for love and beauty." Right? Maybe.

When Professor Elwood called on Kurumi Hollingberry she had expected to hear a name of one of the 13 stones but instead was met with a question. That was a good question. Calista herself did not really have much practice in Lithomancy herself but had done her research before deciding to tackle it for a lesson, and it so turned out that she had an answer for the Prefect.

"Prefect Hollingberry brings up a good point, perhaps one that you all were wondering as well: Why does our reading include 13 stones?" She paused and returned from the board to her seat on the front edge of her desk. "Firstly let me just say that there are a few different types of Lithomancy readings where some use only 3 stones and another 16, but why 13 for ours?" She pointed at the list they now had on the blackboard behind her.

"The planets and heavenly bodies listed as the first eight on the list are just shy of being incomplete." Yes, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were missing--she didn't believe all that dragon dung about the latter no longer being a planet, in her eyes she just saw that as the big men being mean to the young a weak. Anyways.... "If you think about it, it make sense. One thing was that 13 was an ancient Holy number so it's no suprise really as to why that number was decided but in addition, back when Lithomancy was first started, in Ancient times when the Greek and Roman civilizations were young, how far could the naked eye see into the night sky? There were no telescopes. This is why only the moon, the sun, mercury, venus, earth, mars, jupiter and saturn are listed, most of which, hopefully you have noticed, are named or possess qualities of the two civilzations' gods." Yes, they were getting a little history but that never killed anyone. "However, some more recent studiers of the subject include the later discovered planets but we will be sticking with the original stuff."

Tossing a strand of hair out of her face, Callie began again. "Now as for the last 5, they are typically up to the reader and are usually earth bound things like elements or at least something to do with human beings. For the sake of keeping things sane, we are all going to use the same five personal rocks."

Once she had established some background on the rocks Professor Elwood decided they needed to move on. "So now that we have talked about the things we will use to do the reading, why don't we talk about what we will be casting them into. The feild, some call it, is made up of a string made out of whatever material you'd like placed on a flat surface. Typically the circle feild should be no larger than a foot wide to ensure a decent gathering of stones." She paused as she tried to think of how to phrase her next question.

"The reading field is seperated into sections, does anyone have an ideas as to how many and what they stand for?" Definately an intermediate question but she felt they could handle it.

sweetpinkpixie 06-06-2012 05:15 AM

Notes notes notes and more notes.

Kurumi's hands flew over her parchment as she attempted to write down every detail to Professor Elwood's speech. Kurumi was interested in the historical significance behind it, the facts as it were. Those made sense and it probably came off that Kurumi was showing a genuine interest in Divination. So sorry, not the case really. Kurumi didn't have the Inner Eye and all that. It gave context to what they were doing as well...an ancient form of Divination as it were. Which was sort of interesting if you looked at it as reenacting things from the old days. Which is how Kurumi would have to do this in order to take things even remotely seriously.

When Professor Elwood proposed her next question, the Gryffindor was instantly reminded of her Divination OWL and the Natal chart they had had to draw up. That had been divided into 12 sections, representing the zodiac and therefore the months of the year. Could it be that the same sort of principals applied here? Raising her hand, Kurumi ventured an educated guess. This was NOT to be confused with guess work. It had educated in the expression. "Professor, do these readings sort of relate to Natal Charts? Perhaps the space is divided up into 12 sections with each representing passing time...in weeks or days perhaps?"

FearlessLeader19 06-06-2012 05:40 AM

Jory made notes of the thirteen stones. He pondered hard on the question for a while before raising his hand. "Is there twelve sections and they represent each of the astrological signs, Professor?'' he asked.

There are 13 of them in total and I would like you to please tell me one of the stones and what you think it would represent."

OCC: So please only give ONE stone and it's meaning so everyone can participate.

EDIT: Yes, I know I've seen some sites that say 16 stones but we are going with the original 13. I will make a definate list before we move on. ;)

What the heck was Lithomancy? Zhenya shrugged to herself and continued to listen to the Professor. When she paused, Zhenya realised she should probably be taking notes, so she quickly pulled out some paper and a quill and began neatly writing everything she remembered down. Slowly she was understanding what Lithomancy was and how they did it and why. She decided to listen and, as students said what some of the stones and their meanings were, she wrote them down in a small table she had drawn up.

Huh? She listened to what the Professor was saying but didn't completely understand. Maybe she wasn't as good as Divination as she thought. That centaur made it seem like a nonsense subject, but THIS Professor, without them, made it more of a subject requiring actual study and thinking. She was being challenged. But still... she had no idea. But, raising her hand she said "Professor are there thirteen sections? And they all stand for the different stones being used?"

Nerida wrote down what the Professor was saying. Then she copied down what was on the blackboard. There could be two potions for the sections. Raising her hand after thinking about the question Professor Elwood just asked, Are there 13 sections, one for each of the stones. Or is it like... What did they learn last term...Oh right natal charts She continued Natal charts, and has 12 sections, that each represent the astrological signs?
SPOILER!!: Nerida's Notes

Lithomancy~Divination using stones
  • To do a reading you need a stone set.
  • To do the reading: Toss the stones into a circle made of string that will act as the field. Once the stones are in the feild read them by their position.
  • There is 13 stones in the stone set. Each of the thirdteen stones represents something.
Field is made of string/or other material that you place on a flat surface

Moarrrr scribbling.....

When he had time to pause, he looked up at the board, thirteen stones representing almost every heavenly body plus the elements... and they were supposed to cast them onto a circular field no larger than a foot in diameter? Thats bound to get really crowded.

But then maybe that was the point...

Blue eyes scrolled the 13 items listed on the board as he pondered how many sections that circle was supposed to be divided in. Was it supposed to be a section for each stone? Each representation? But the Professor said the circle was made out of a string, he figured this has got to be something simpler, imagine having to divide a foot-long circle into 13 or even 12 parts. Given that this was something totally new to him he raised a tentative hand to reply "Uhm... are they split into 4 sections which represent...." what? Eyes darts back to the board ".... the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water?"

Vanillasweetheart 06-06-2012 07:16 AM

Chelle stared at the other students in class as they answered. She was a little bewildered. In other words, this whole thing seemed to be a little illogical and was going right over her head. But she was determined to understand it. She scribbled down whatever was on the blackboard on her parchment.

Quote:

1. The Sun - power, energy and life
2. The Moon - inspiration, psychic ability and intuition
3. Saturn - longevity, protection, purification
4. Venus - love, fidelity, happiness
5. Mercury - intelligence, self-improvement, overcoming bad habits
6. Mars - courage, defensive magic, battle, conflict
7. Jupiter - money, justice, prosperity
8. Earth - security of home, family and friends

11. Water - Compassion, reconciliation, healing and cleansing
12. Spirit - Needs of the self, communication with the Divine
13. The Universe - our place in the grand scheme of things, on a cosmic level
Then as Professor Elwood asked another question, she raised her hand to answer it. "Professor, it can either be the 12 sections based on the Natal Charts, as so many have mentioned so far," she said. And that seems illogical, too. "Or, if I remember correctly, there is something called 'Loops'. They are four in number. I don't know if they have anything to do with the reading circle that we're talking about right now."

Yes, she had read about Loops, too. She just didn't know where it would fit in.

FireboltAvis88 06-06-2012 07:34 AM

Alyssa thought of the various possibilities and the number of sections would be involved in the reading before raising her hand.

"Professor, I agree with Vickers. I believe that the circle is divided into 4 Quadrants, each representing a different purpose in one's life. The 4 quadrants could further be divided into 12 segments to represent the days and weeks in a person's life." Alyssa hoped that she made sense.

KP1 06-06-2012 07:51 AM

Derrick listened to everyone's answers until he thought of an answer. He raised his hand,''The circle is divided into what I believe is 4 Quadrants.''He grinned and paused.''Which represents different purposes in Others lifes.''There was more to it,But he couldn't bother to say it.

TakemetotheBurrow 06-06-2012 11:27 AM

Ella frowned. Poor Pluto! The little guy was getting the shaft again! The second year couldn't help but think back to the debate they had had about the teeny planet last term. She still felt very strongly that he belonged with the others. The second year began scribbling down notes, not all that neatly, and the frown stayed on her face as a sign of respect for the little ex-planet.

Ella wasn't sure about the sections of the circle. She didn't recall ever reading about that aspect of today's lesson so she sat quietly, quill ready to write down how many there were and the meaning of them.

Alright...

So, Nora understood most of what the professor told them, and it was quite fascinating for her. But as things got complicated... she was lost. Totally lost. What was she going to do, then? She was going to stay quiet and take lots and lots of notes, so she could eventually study more carefully later. She didn't know the answer to her last question either, so taking notes was the best thing she could do at the moment.

Maybe trying to concentrate more would be great as well.

Sarah listened to the professor and saw waht was on the board.
She hastily wrote it down.

Aspen glared right BACK. He was so transparent, too, she noted. He was thinking about her, he was scheming. Aspen turned in her seat so that she could watch him. Hopefully, he'd start squirming. She discreeeeetely inched her wand out and gently tapped it against her leg.

Hmmm? Aspen turned her attention from baiting the Head Boy back to.... the Professor. Depressing? Didn't have to seem so depressing? Aspen frowned at the Professor.

It was the same thing. Was the truth depressing to the Professor? Wasn't that interesting. Aspen would stick to the truth, facts, and... not give more "depressing answers". No. She chose not to answer the next question and went back to Head Boy Watching. HBW.

Nigel did not really care about Pluto unless they were talking about the dog Pluto. He knew from his parents that Pluto is not a planet but a dwarf planet like Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. He liked the eight planets more than the five dwarf planets anyway.

He was shocked that there actually was a sun stone. Which then made it likely that the there was a stone connected to the other planets as well. Nigel was not sure about anything Professor Elwood was saying right now so he decided to just take notes and try and learn something about Lithomancy.

Kimalia 06-06-2012 02:54 PM

Well, Kimalia was losing herself again among the important lesson. Trying to concentrate, she heard the Professor say something about the stones.. and the planets.. and numbers... now about the sections. It was hard, but she didn't want to lose anything as she hurriedly jotted down what was being displayed.

SPOILER!!: Kimalia's notes

1. The Sun - power, energy and life
2. The Moon - inspiration, psychic ability and intuition
3. Saturn - longevity, protection, purification
4. Venus - love, fidelity, happiness

Hmm.. how many sections? Well, Kimalia didn't know exactly so she waited to hear the others answer so she could jot it down too.

DarkStorm 06-06-2012 03:56 PM

Harvey noted everything down that was on the board he didn't want to forget all of that.. that was for sure. He listened to what the professor asked of them.. he had no idea as to what the answer would be, so after he finished copying what was on the board he sat there waiting for the professor to deem whether the answers were correct or not, so that he may write those down as well.

Expecto-Penguin 06-06-2012 05:02 PM

Annabelle heard the professor ask a question about the stones. But she was copying down the stones and their meanings into her notebook.
SPOILER!!: Annabelle's Notes

11. Water - Compassion, reconciliation, healing and cleansing
12. Spirit - Needs of the self, communication with the Divine

After she was done copying, she made an educated guess to the question. "Professor isn't the stones like separated by what they are capable of? Like the 4 quadrants and they all represent a section of life and the natural elements." She tried the best she could.

And so he was right about the water stone. Jonathan knew a few of them but he wasn't that sure enough what the Water stone and it's reading. The Professor mentioned 13 and yet Jonathan only knew about 5 of them, he even barely knew what they each meant. Thankfully, he remembered the Water Stone. Then Jonathan took out his quill and parchment to copy what was written on the board.

SPOILER!!: Jonathan's notes

While copying the notes, he listened to the professor explained further more about them. It makes sense once he read his book. Divination is not a strong subject for Jonathan but he tries to keep up with it nonetheless.

Does anyone have an ideas as to how many and what they stand for?

Quite frankly, Jonathan doesn't have a clue in any of it. The question itself was confusing him already. So he stayed his head lowered as he tries to finish copying the notes on the board.

StarShine 06-06-2012 05:46 PM

João wrote what he could catch as fast as he could in his notebook. He copied the list and would have liked to think on them for a moment, but the professor was already asking things and he had to listen to her. Hearing a few answers, he figured his answer would be wrong again. But he would go by his logic. And who knew? Maybe even Kurumi was wrong and he would be right?

Hehe.

Raising his hand, he said "There are 3 sections, perhaps? One for the past, one for the present and one for future." Because only that was the phases of interpreting.

Natal charts? How wonderful the girl remembered enough about other forms of Divination to draw a connection.

"Yes Miss Hollingberry, Natal charts used in the more astronomy related realm of Divination are very similar to the reading field in this particular type of Lithomancy. The circle is divided up into 12 weeks, rather than days but you are rabsolutely right." Good girl, Callie was happy to see she seemed to be taking an interest in the subject.

Her's had been a good guess though. Nice work.

Make sense? Hopefully.

And this stuff about loops? "Do you possibly mean quadrants? The reading field is also seperated into 4 main quadrents of 3 week periods, I think that is what you may mean."

Not quite the correct answer but still a good guess.

"Not exactly dear, but definately a well thoughtout conclusion. This reading will be seperated into 12 sections and will only be dealing with the future." She smiled at him before moving on.

Calista crossed her legs and rearranged her skirts before moving on. "Very good answers everyone, even those who were not technically correct, I see the thought processes that went into those educated guesses." She grinned at them all, and made a mental note of those who were taking notes.

The warmth was definately creating a cozy learning environment and she was just glad she could wear sandals without her toes freezing off. Anyways back to teaching. "Many of you suggested correctly that our lithomancy reading field would be seperated into 12 sections that represent the upcoming 12 weeks of the reader or subject's life. Mister Vickers suggested a parent seperation class before that, 4 quadrants." She paused and went to the board to draw the diagram.

"This should help you better understand the concept. The black dividing lines are the 4 quadrants, the 12 green lines mark the one-week long periods." She sat the chalk back down into it's holder and returned to her seat.

Hopefully they were all copying this down, she understood it was more information than the last lesson but it was still all very important. "Before I set you loose to do something on your own, I am going to go over one more term and then ask you for your thoughts on another. When casting the stones into the reading field we will be studying where they fall, in what sections and in relation to others. So one of the important terms to think about when deciphering your lithomancy reading is the one called Cluster/s." The Blonde paused while they students wrote away. "Clusters are exactly what they sound like, they are groups of stones that have fallen closely together and seem to have something to do with each others." Yeah, easy enough. "So here's an example, say in my first section (the first week after the reading in my future) 2 stones fell directly beside each other, forming a cluster, Venus and Mercury. Now perhaps that means I will be able to communicate more freely with someone I love or perhaps they will finally approach me?" And no that had nothing to do with her pesonal life!

So now for their turn to answer something. "What do you think pointers are in a reading." If they thought about clusters they should hopefully get pointers.

Holmesian Feline 06-06-2012 08:28 PM

The sixth year wrote down the list of given stones once they were confirmed to be correct, including his own guess of the water stone. That way he had it there in his notes and not just in the reading. Gideon then listened as the class moved on in describing the actual field on which the various stones would be read. So lithomacy readings were almost like natal charts, at least with the fact that there were twelve sections and how something, whether it was stones or signs, fell within the various sections was what the meaning meant. Interesting....very interesting. Gideon copied down the chart into his notes as Professor Elwood crew it up on the board with chalk and then thought upon her question.

Pointers...pointers...what were pointers?

The prefect raised his hand when something came to mind, hoping to supply something at least a little close to what it was actually. "Are pointers...stones that land in such a way to point towards another? So that you can read one as a predecessor to the next as if a cause and effect role?"

Alex scribbled down everything the professor was saying as fast as he could...Divination could be so simply, and yet other times (like today) it was SO confusing. All these circles and sections and nonsense...it was going to take him a few minutes to get all this in his brain.

He raised his hand as he flipped through his textbook, looking for the answer to the professors question. "Erm, aren't pointers like...points on the stone if they aren't completely round? So it actually makes it a literal POINTER?" he answered. "It could be pointing to another stone which could signal some sort of significant connection between the two," he added as an example.

Nigel did not understand what the teacher was asking. He was still looking at what was on the blackboard.

Hmm.. it looked like a wheel Nigel thought.

Well whatever, he just kept on taking notes hoping he would understand this when it was over.

So he was wrong and Kurumi was right, after all. João shrugged to himself. No big deal. He wasn't expecting much anyway from this class. He was merely here to seek some answers to his daily-life problems. Not that Divination would come up with a good answer... he could always hope though.

After done with taking notes and listening, he pondered the question asked in vain. He had no idea what they were! So he remained silent... wondering if this class would mean anything to him in the end.

Ella tried her best to follow along while Professor Elwood explained how the circle would be broken up. She copied down notes as the explanation continued, stopping now and then to reread what she had written. Apparently reading stones was a little more complicated than the second year had originally thought...

Okay, so clusters were stones that fell closely together. That was understandable. She could totally grasp that concept. But what were pointers? Ella had seen her muggle teachers use pointers in elementary school. They were wooden sticks used to point to information on the board. Perhaps pointers in this scenario meant stones that lead to a certain cluster. "Professor, are pointers the stones that fall and lead towards a cluster?" Seemed legit to Ella!

To say that Louisa was writing every word professor Elwood was saying, was an understatement. She'd written the professor's words and some more, either from students that said something made sense to her or simply intrigued her or her own thoughts about what she was writing. And yes, Louisa could write, comprehend, debate in her mind, aaaaand make a good handwriting. She wasn't wearing a blue badge for nothing.

When the teacher asked about pointers, though, she merely sat there. Her hand clutching the quill and ready to start scribbling again any second now. Come oooonnn fellow students.

After her last guess, even though it had apparently been correct, Stella had gone back to just quietly taking notes. Especially as soon as Professor Elwood had written the thirteen stones up on the board for them, as she didn't want to forget any of those. Writing them down helped her remember the information better than just relying on her textbook, whether or not she knew said information would be found inside. The discussion had most definitely moved past identifying the stones they'd be working with, though, and she quickly sketched the circular field diagram into her notes as well. It wasn't perfect, but then she wasn't an artist. If she wanted a perfect drawing, she'd ask her mother or Matt over Christmas, but that wasn't important. She'd gotten the idea down.

Another question had been asked, and after taking notes on the topic of clusters, she found herself raising her hand yet again. It was just a thought, as she hadn't looked in the book again yet, but she was at least curious if it was on the right track. If pointers had to do with clusters, like she had a feeling they might. "Do pointers serve to help clarify the meaning of a cluster? I mean, using your example, you aren't sure if the Venus and Mercury stones are telling you if you're going to be the communicator or the person you love is, so perhaps you find the Mars stone nearby. Or the Spirit stone. Not really part of the cluster, but it might still clarify your reading of the other two stones," she said. It was probably entirely wrong, but at least she'd said something. That meant she wouldn't have the idea floating around in her head and confusing her later.
