On the darkest of dark nights, down the rolling, phthalo green hills of Hogwarts, at the extreme back of the barnyard, in what used to be an old winged horse stall with no door and is now a converted fireplace..... lies one very shiny, very large egg-like object.
The object seems to be giving off an incredible amount of heat and occasionally quivers to and fro as the flames lick the sides of the cauldron it sits in. What is it, you wonder? You seem to be half-hypnotized by the shady, crackling, almost bubbling object; you hardly even notice the absence of the hay bales where you usually sit. In fact, there doesn't seem to be ANYWHERE to sit.
So you stand, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, and waiting for more directions from Professor Williamson, who IS sitting, on a little metal stool, his back to the arriving class.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.

And why could he not look at her when he was speaking? "Okay. Although I'm sure Professor Williamson wouldn't mind helping, if you did have a problem with anything...."Right, William? Had he even come back yet?
Nervously biting his nails, Daichi still did not look at the Professor. A part of him wanted to tell her what was bothering him but another part told him that he shouldn't say a thing. He wasn't the kind of person that wanted people to worry about it. It made him feel like a baby...and he was not! With a small smile, he turned his head and now looked at the professor. "I...okay.." he whispered before looking at Williamson who came to rate his drawning. Oooh nice points but.... he totally missed Daichi's fear in to something nice. With a small sigh he decided to just watch what would happen to the egg. Cause despite being scared of the fire close by he was still curious as to what was inside.

There weren't many people who witnessed the birth of a dragon right? He should soooo tell his father about this! The thing looked kinda ugly though...
Like most instructions, Aspen had taken back up and draw what you see to be instructions followed directly. She backed up farther than most of her peers, but that was fine. It gave her more room to draw, more to see and observe.
And also, way out here in the dark, the Professor couldn't see her making faces or tilting her head at the bizarreness of it all. Nor could the other plethora of adults crashing class.
She was wondering if she should EXPECT to find dragon eggs. No, right? Dragons were contained since the Ministry had that whole Statute of Secrecy thing. Aspen saw this for what it was: an egg hatching party, not a lesson. It was an opportunity, not a learning occasion. Which was fine by Aspen, but she felt the Professors serving fruit was a little...
You know.
Much.
She signed her name quickly to the bottom of her parchment when the egg ACTUALLY started to HATCH.
SPOILER!!: Peeeeeecture.
...and moved in closer. She made sure to keep a wide berth from that Divination professor lest she say they weren't "dressed properly" for dragon hatchings and Aspen went to stand nearby Mr. Scabior. He was kind of quiet and Aspen didn't want a lot of talking while a DRAGON was hatching.
WWW: EXCELLENT WORK, ASPEN! +10 points for Gary's apples.

Oh yeah, it was kind of cute. From what she could see anyway. For a dragon. Isabelle had to admit that. She could see why William got so excited about them. Mine you, when it got to full size it probably wouldn't be such a nice thing to have around.
As his shield went up, Issy got off her stool and backed up towards the wall of the barn. Noticing the mouthing, she nodded and flicked her wand to help strengthen it, just as a piece of shell went walloping into it. Oh, this could get interesting.

Cece stood there at the back of the class with her wand in her hand just watching what was going on. William may have put up a shield but that didn't mean it was going to hold some careless student back. At this point she was more worried about them hurting the little dragon than she was about it hurting them.
Merlin help the child that tried to break through the shield. Not only would they have her to deal with they would most likely feel the wrath of Professor Williamson too.

very scary.
Seeing the little 'Claw move closer to her, she knew this was one she wouldn't have to worry about getting to close to the action up front. "You don't need to be scared. Professor Williamson isn't going to let anything happen to you." If he was he wouldn't have put up a shied, or asked extra professors to be here.
Seeing that the dragon had finally made its way out of the shell Cece put her arm around the little girl, you know just to make her feel a little safer.

MEEP! Emmanuelle was thankful that the professor had thrown up a shield, otherwise she'd be picking eggshell out of her eye! Not pleasant. As she kept watching, she was in awe. How many people in the world got to watch a baby dragon hatch?! Not many, she guessed.
"Mon Dieu!" she exclaimed, when the dragon was finally out of the egg. Out of shock, not because it was ugly. It wasn't baby cat/dog cute, but still, it was a baby! Babies of any type were not ugly. "AWW!"

A hybrid? Prudence was officially confused, however the idea of seeing a dragon, let alone a rare one made her forget her earlier nervousness. Grinning she watched, the egg shaking more and more.
And then it hatched.
She flinched, as it hatched earlier than she originally thought. She heard its sqeaks and the beautiful green scales (though it creeped her out when she looked at its beady black eyes) and couldn't help the smile that appeared on her face.
"It's beautiful... so so cute!" she wouldn't have traded all the sleep in the world for that moment!

A hybrid?
...
A HYBRID?!
Kurumi's eyes widened and she sat up VERY straight. Well, Professor Williamson, THAT was a trick question with a TRICK answer. Not that she really cared. There was a baby dragon and that was all that matter. It reminded her that she still needed to speak with the man about future careers for her post Hogwarts...hopefully those involving dragons...like what they were doing RIGHT NOW. She could help with hatchings...right?
AND THEN IT HAPPENED! Kurumi's eyes were bugging out of her head and she was leaning forward probably more then was really necessary and simply stared at the SUPERADORABLECREATURE that came out of the egg. And then....Kurumi cried. It was amazing seeing life come into the world like that and it made things even more incredible that it was a baby dragon. Sure, she had seen kittens and puppies delivered before, she had been there when her family's shiba inu, Hikari, was born...but this was....something totally different. THIS was....it just was!
Tears trickling down her face and stars in her eyes, Kurumi looked back towards Papa!Williamson. "Professor, have you already named him?" Something with a W perhaps?

Ok... so the fact that they needed a shield to be put up to protect them had Lily worried a bit, but she couldn't help but watch the birth of the baby dragon. Who knew whether they would ever see that again... So even though egg shell was flying into the shield, the second year didn't let her eyes leave the little dragon. All she could think was what was going to happen next... how was Professor Williamson going to manage to take care of the dragon while keeping all of the students safe, and finish teaching the class. It would be hard enough doing one of the three let alone all of them...

"Yes!" Williamson almost shouted, pointing at the girl and grinning hugely. "YES. This IS a hybrid dragon, and you all are MOST fortunate for being allowed to witness the birth of such a rare baby.
"As far as I know, and as far as my colleagues in Romania agree, this baby should be a crossbreed between the Swedish Short-Snout and the Romanian Longhorn." He looked at Cece for some reason, probably because she was from Sweden and because he knew this baby was going to grow up to be particularly dangerous.
He was about to say more when a piece of shell flew off the egg and landed close to the kids. Time for gloves and shields!
The dragon was a hybrid between a Swedish Shirt-Snout and a Romanian Longhorn? See?! She still had the idea, the baby dragon would be of Romanian descent even if it just a teeny tiny bit. But wait....aren't hybrids like more dangerous than single bred ones? Was it the reason why there were so many Professors there? To make sure nothing bad would happen to them? If so, then she was not going to doubt that they'll be witnessing a dragon hatching without anyone getting hurt.
Pfft. She trusted the Professors. They were teachers for a reason.
.............then that happened..............
a large piece of the egg's shell fell off, rocketing towards them!

Every time an egg shell went up into the air, Beezus couldn't help but swallow. She could feel the Professors building a shield to cover all of them. Yaay! They were protected, but oh, she wanted to run and hug that baby dragon immediately when it comes off its shell!
And another piece.....
O__________________O Her eyes almost popped out of its sockets when the rest of the egg went melting and a baby dragon emerged from it. She heard its little squeal, and she also wanted to squeal in utter delight, yet she sat still for a second, marveling at the scaly, green thing which as of the moment seemed like the second best thing to ice cream.
Finally, after a whole minute she went screaming happily,"AAAAAHH!" A baby dragon! An adorable, cute baby draaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagon!
He nodded around at them all, sincerely hoping that they were being good little children and were taking notes. That way, he'd look extra awesome in front of his coworkers. "This breed, though, does not. Knowing that I, your professor, used to work on a Romanian dragon sanctuary, and knowing that we have a light green sort of egg here, what sort of breed do you think this one is?"
Belle could only guess it was a dragon egg but she wasn't sure what type. She wrote it anyways in case she was right.

Just a litttttttle bit further, baby, come on out and plaaaay!
Belle was in shock to see a hybrid dragon egg about to hatch. She went under the protective shield the professor made for the class. She didn't know if the shards from the egg would be sharp. They were definitely witnessing history in the making. Alyssa raised her hand because she had a question that she just has to ask.
"Professor. So what will the dragon experts call this guy?"Alyssa asked Professor Williamson.
"Will they give him a new breed name or will it be either a Swedish Longhorn or Romanian Short-snout, depending on who the daddy is?" Alyssa grinned.

Then he picked up the little dragon, who immediately bit onto his (gloved) finger, and used his wand to dry it off with a gentle stream of air. It was only as the dragon started sniffing toward his bucket of brandy and chicken blood that he remembered his class. Well first things first: he had to feed the dragon. "No I do not," he answered simply, bending down to pick up the metal, magical alloy baby bottle he'd worked with a former professor to create. Unscrewing the cap, Williamson dipped the bottle into the dragon food and filled it up, then wiped it clean with a nearby rag and put the lid back on.

Belle was taking down the answers from the professor answering the question. This information was kind of useful. "Proffesor wouldn't the dragon not be able to fly well since the Swedish Short Snout can't and it will also have large muscles?" Annabelle asked unsure if her answers were right. She knew a little bit about dragons since she read about some in the library.

Her mouth still curved gaily, but not screaming anymore, Beatrice had finally settled down after relinquishing the excitement and happiness she had just felt rushing through her nerves upon seeing the tiny, scaly creature. She looked at how Professor Williamson took the baby dragon into his hands, and fed it. N'awww. What a family reunion.
Oh! A question. Her hand quickly shot up in the air, "Well Professor, we can expect him...her to have green scales and maybe the flames he...she can produce would be a brilliant blue color," just like the Swedish Short-Snout, "or...it can have horns." But one thing was for sure, that baby dragon would grow BIG.
And Professor Williamson said something about name suggestions right? Her mind immediately scampered off to that muggle cartoon her cousin often watched when they were younger, Pokemon. It was a VERY old show but he liked it, and she did too eventually. She found the names given to the creatures so amusing. "Can I suggest a name too Professor? Errrr, how about Charizard?" Yeap, an awesome name from that muggle series. "or Custard?" No idea where that came from. "Ember perhaps?" That name sounded cool, to her anyway.

Gideon raised his eyebrow as he listened to the professor describe the dragon's official yet rare breed. A cross between a Romanian longhorn and a Swedish short-snout. Just by his breed name and heritage, the creature held a similarity to Gideon himself in a way due to his own parentage. Interesting...very interesting. The sixth year shook it off and turned his focus back to the question Professor Williamson asked the class. "Well due to the fact that both breeds have one or two horns coming from their head, it is likely the characteristic might come through the hybrid."
And then the prefect registered they had also been given the task of suggesting names for the new dragon. "Balaur," he suggested, offering up a name option for the newborn boy. "Its a type of dragonlike creature in Romanian folklore," Gideon added providing some background information on the name. Thank goodness he had actually had the desire to look into his own heritage from time to time and not just his mum's which he had the stronger connections to.
But that reminded him. "Class, knowing the parents of this little fella are a Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout, what sort of characteristics from each would you expect him to have when he's full-grown?"

Nigel heard the professor ask the question about how the dragon will look like when it grows up. Nigel started to imagine but could not since he never saw a real life Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout before. He only saw pictures of them in books. It was hard but Nigel came up with an idea. "Um Professor the dragon will have the horns of a Romanian Longhorn and the scales of a Swedish Short-Snout." Yes that would make an awesome dragon.

Kurumi just couldn't keep her eyes off the little dragon and another question nearly popped out of her mouth before she was able to put up her filtering system - CAN I HOLD IT?! Thankfully, Professor Williamson's voice brought her back to the task at had, erm...lesson as it were, and she didn no shouting of said desire just ignore that it was written ALL OVER HER FACE.
A name for the baby dragon? Well, Kurumi was sure that it needed to have something with a W since this was Professor Williamson we were all talking about. "What about Waclaw, it means crowning glory," Kurumi suggested.
Oh, right, there was another actual question on the table. Ahem. Raising her hand again, Kurumi spoke, "Will it matter which breed of dragon was the mother and which was the father? In terms of dominant and recessive genes I mean," she asked, cocking her head to the side curiously. This could get into Mendel's Laws of Inheritance....but Kurumi had only briefly read about those while she had been doing some research on kneazle breeding for her History of Magic final project two terms back. "From its Swedish Short-Snout lineage, it could produce extremely hot fire as the breed is well known for that."

"Hi bud!" Willy crooned at the dragon, reaching a hand out and tickling under its chin. "How are ya? Welcome to the world, buddy! Let's get you cleaned off." He flicked his wand out and started dribbling water on the dragon, laughing when it shook the water droplets off its wings.
He'd answer their questions as he worked.
He knelt down by the dragon and held on the bottle to it, grinning as it latched on right away. Without taking his eyes off the baaaaaby, he answered Sierra's second question.
"Dragons take a good two years to mature. They don't fly until they're almost a full year old and they don't start breathing fire until they're about six months old." He shot a grin out toward the class. "So don't worry about your hair catching fire, kids, this one isn't a Norwegian Ridgeback." Ridgebacks, as everyone knew, could snort flames at only a month old.
"Gracias?" William replied vaguely to whoever had complimented his baby. "I'm so proud."
Yes, he had given birth to his dragon. IT WAS HIS. And woe be to any who argued otherwise.
"Aha, thanks for asking," William swiveled his head again to eye the girl who'd spoken up. "I actually thought you guys could throw out a few names for this little guy," because yes, he'd checked, "and we could take a vote before the end of class!"
The staff were welcome to suggest names too. Willy nodded toward Callie, Medea, Oliver, Dash, Isabelle and Cece.
Turning back to the baby, Willy noticed that his bottle was almost empty, so he refilled it again, naturally, and continued the process. The dragon only let out ONE little squeak that whole time.
He was glad it was absorbed with the bottle and not scared by all the children looking at it. "I uh, I dunno, I thought you guys could help me name it," he mused in response. "And," SIGH, "I suppose that will eventually happen, but not for a while yet."
So. Shhh. Don't ruin the moment, girl.
Oh good question!
William glanced back at the boy but shook his head. "No. Dragons interbreeding is similar to dogs interbreeding; terrier-labrador mixes can still have pups, can't they? Same with dragons."
He winked at the kid though. "Five points for thinking ahead though!"
But that reminded him. "Class, knowing the parents of this little fella are a Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout, what sort of characteristics from each would you expect him to have when he's full-grown?"
Oh and it was time for another refill! Willy's baby was so hungry. Er, thirsty. Teehe.
Ummm....well there were two things she had on her list now. Make name suggestions for a baby boy dragon and answer the question. Better start with the question.
Jezzabelle timidly raised her hand, "Well, actually while we may know what parents he has it wouldn't really be all that easy to guess the phenotype that he would project without looking at the parents genetoype and crossing them. You could guess the certain features but you wouldn't know until he grew up." How would such a young person know such things? She was a Herbologist in the making and everyone who had dealt with plants knew of Gregor Mendel and the same principles of genetics that applied to flowers should apply to this, right? Dominate and recessive traits. Important things to know.
"But my best guess would have to be long horns and a short snout? Green in color? Possible fire breathing? Possible inability to fly?" She wasn't entirely sure though....and that was just a guess.

Sarah was amused. She just looked at the baby dragon and the professor. A hybrid?! Now that was really interesting. She hadn't known many hybrid dragons. Well not that she has seen many real ones either. "We could name him Jeffrey?" she said. Uh-oh, sorry Jeffrey. That was her owl's name and she couldn't think of anything else right then.
Characteristics? It takes a great deal of patience and bravery to observe and note the things of dragons. She shuddered a bit, thinking of being face to face with a grown up one. "The dragon can probably have those long horns" she said. The main attraction of the Romanian dragon was its beautiful horns. "And must be a bulky one when it grows" she said. Think about the short-snout too. "Yes, it would be a fast flier, thanks to the short-snout" she said, "And since, it's a hybrid of longhorn and short-snout, it might be of a medium height, say 30ft?" she compared the two species. "And not to mention the fire-breathing. What colour would it's fire be sir. Blue like the short-snout?" she asked.
This was probably the first dragon Angelina can ever remember seeing. It was so cute! Listening to the professors question and statement about the dragon she had to think a lot. She really didn't know much about dragons. As normal Angelina would have to take a guess. Last time her guess what right, but lets see. "Umm... wouldn't the dragon prossibly have an least one horn if both Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout have at least one?" SHe really didn't know much about the Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout at all. "Can't the drago be able to produce fire as well," she asked.

When he's... full grown? Meaning... not so adorable anymore, but creepy and... deadly?
Banishing away those thoughts, Nora raised her hand to answer the question. "Since the dragon got the green scales from the Romanian Longhorn part, I can only guess that the little guy has to take something from the Swedish Short-Snout part as well... which would be the fire... breathing... thing." She only hoped the nameless dragon won't grow horns anytime soon.
Aww, baby dragon drinking from a bottle, it was so adorable! Silvia raised her hand. "Well, it could end up having both long horns and a short snout. But couldn't it also end up looking a lot more like one breed than the other, depending on which of the parent dragons has the most dominant traits?"

Oh and it was time for another refill! Willy's baby was so hungry. Er, thirsty. Teehe.
The egg finally hatched. The baby dragon looked really slimey, possibly not as cute as he imagined it would be but it was really awesome to finally meet a baby dragon. Jonathan smiled seeing as it can barely do anything. It just looked really helpless and he just wants to feed it or nurse it. Make it as his pet.
And so it is a HYBRID. Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout.
Jonathan has read about them but he's no dragon expert like the Professor. He knows a lot about dragons from head to toe. Jonathan raised his hand and focused on the question. "Should one really know for sure though?" he asked. Well, no one really knows which skill and/or characteristics this dragon could obtain, that would just depend right? "Well..." answering the question "... he might have long horns considering that the dragon looks like a Romanian Longhorn from a far." that could be one of the characteristics it may have "and it may also obtain a powerful flame like all Swedish Short-Snout dragons" he added.
