On the darkest of dark nights, down the rolling, phthalo green hills of Hogwarts, at the extreme back of the barnyard, in what used to be an old winged horse stall with no door and is now a converted fireplace..... lies one very shiny, very large egg-like object.
The object seems to be giving off an incredible amount of heat and occasionally quivers to and fro as the flames lick the sides of the cauldron it sits in. What is it, you wonder? You seem to be half-hypnotized by the shady, crackling, almost bubbling object; you hardly even notice the absence of the hay bales where you usually sit. In fact, there doesn't seem to be ANYWHERE to sit.
So you stand, shifting awkwardly from foot to foot, and waiting for more directions from Professor Williamson, who IS sitting, on a little metal stool, his back to the arriving class.
Smiling and nodding, nodding and smiling at all the students' kind words, Willy felt a great sense of relief. It was as if a weight, a great, heavy, stressful anvil, had been lifted from his shoulders. And now everything was great in the world! Heck, he was cuddling a NEWBORN in his arms!
Granted, it wasn't HIS newborn, exactly, but WHATEVER. It was CUTE.
"All right, all right, for those of you who want to pet the baby, just step on up and gently stroke it's head. Do NOT try tickling it under the chin or on the belly, especially not while it's asleep." These kids had heard of Hogwarts' motto, right? It was like, Dash's responsibility to teach that to them, anyway.
"When you're done petting, please slowwwwly and softlyyy step away and silently gather your things. You guys have been a great class." Even if he did disagree with their name of choice. "Have a good night, kids."
OOC: You may RP petting the dragon (in one post, please) and then head on out. THANKS SO MUCH FOR ATTENDING. You guys are great!!!!
Belle finally got her turn to pet the baby dragon. She didn't tickle the baby under the chin or belly because she didn't want to get burned. "Awww it is soo cute!" she said. She could pet it all night if she wanted. After she had her fair share, she went away quietly and went back to the castle. She needed sleep for her classes tomorrow.

When it was Sierra's turn, she made a slight face of disapproval. Why was she in this line anyway? She didn't really care to pat the dragon, yet here she was anyway. Stepping a little closer, Sierra eyed the sleeping dragon, remembering not to tickle it, just as the motto had suggested.
With slight hesitation, she reached forward and gently brushed her hand across the dragon's head. It felt funny, and it wasn't a feeling she'd forget anytime soon. She tried to think about how large this dragon would one day be, and then she'd be only slightly amazed that she'd once grazed her hand across the creature's head.
After that, she slowly crept away and gathered her things. "Bye, Professor," she whispered, not wanting to wake the sleeping dragon. Then she turned and headed back to the castle.

He checked if he had his safety gloves in his bag and wore it right away, while waiting for Oakey to do his turn.
I...yeah sure...I will go before you. Oakey slipped up closer to the front of the class but made sure the Mordy wasn't to far behind him. As he neared the baby dragon he gave it a soft smile. Merlin it was so gosh darn adorable! He gently stroked the dragonling on it's head turned face Mordy and showed him his hand. As if he were saying Lookie that I still have a hand after petting a Dragon!. He stepped aside and waited for Mordy to have his turn, so they could walk back up to the castle together.

Alyssa quietly stepped up to the sleeping baby dragon, stroked it's head and smiled down at it. She kept thinking of Caleb and how he would be interested in meeting this dragon but she knew that she wouldn't be able to get him on the castle grounds without permission from the Headmaster and Professor Williamson.
She stroked the baby's head one more time and bent down to give it a kiss on the forehead before she tip toed away and left the barn.
"Hi bud!" Willy crooned at the dragon, reaching a hand out and tickling under its chin. "How are ya? Welcome to the world, buddy! Let's get you cleaned off." He flicked his wand out and started dribbling water on the dragon, laughing when it shook the water droplets off its wings.
Then he picked up the little dragon, who immediately bit onto his (gloved) finger, and used his wand to dry it off with a gentle stream of air. It was only as the dragon started sniffing toward his bucket of brandy and chicken blood that he remembered his class. Well first things first: he had to feed the dragon. He'd answer their questions as he worked.
"No I do not," he answered simply, bending down to pick up the metal, magical alloy baby bottle he'd worked with a former professor to create. Unscrewing the cap, Williamson dipped the bottle into the dragon food and filled it up, then wiped it clean with a nearby rag and put the lid back on.
He knelt down by the dragon and held on the bottle to it, grinning as it latched on right away. Without taking his eyes off the baaaaaby, he answered Sierra's second question.
"Dragons take a good two years to mature. They don't fly until they're almost a full year old and they don't start breathing fire until they're about six months old." He shot a grin out toward the class. "So don't worry about your hair catching fire, kids, this one isn't a Norwegian Ridgeback." Ridgebacks, as everyone knew, could snort flames at only a month old.
"Gracias?" William replied vaguely to whoever had complimented his baby. "I'm so proud."
Yes, he had given birth to his dragon. IT WAS HIS. And woe be to any who argued otherwise.
"Aha, thanks for asking," William swiveled his head again to eye the girl who'd spoken up. "I actually thought you guys could throw out a few names for this little guy," because yes, he'd checked, "and we could take a vote before the end of class!"
The staff were welcome to suggest names too. Willy nodded toward Callie, Medea, Oliver, Dash, Isabelle and Cece.
Turning back to the baby, Willy noticed that his bottle was almost empty, so he refilled it again, naturally, and continued the process. The dragon only let out ONE little squeak that whole time.
He was glad it was absorbed with the bottle and not scared by all the children looking at it. "I uh, I dunno, I thought you guys could help me name it," he mused in response. "And," SIGH, "I suppose that will eventually happen, but not for a while yet."
So. Shhh. Don't ruin the moment, girl.
Oh good question!
William glanced back at the boy but shook his head. "No. Dragons interbreeding is similar to dogs interbreeding; terrier-labrador mixes can still have pups, can't they? Same with dragons."
He winked at the kid though. "Five points for thinking ahead though!"
But that reminded him. "Class, knowing the parents of this little fella are a Romanian Longhorn and a Swedish Short-Snout, what sort of characteristics from each would you expect him to have when he's full-grown?"
Oh and it was time for another refill! Willy's baby was so hungry. Er, thirsty. Teehe.
Ahh, so it was like dogs breeding, but did that make it a mutt? Kaiden beamed at the points, even if they were for that horrible Hufflepuff. But the next thing the professor said confused him yet again. "Um, professor." He said raising his hand. "Why is it a Portuguese Long-Snout? Did they breed it in Portugal?" Because Romania and Sweden are kinda far from portugal right?"And, well, I would imagine the baby would have aspects of both parents. Like, horns, and be in between the size of the two dragons."

Cuddling up next to his dad's legs, the dwagon let out a happy rumble and blinked its bright little eyes, blinking along to the Twinkle Twinkle tune. The length of time between blinks swowwwly grew until the dragon was soundly sleeping on Willy's feet.
Ohh, All that singing wasn't just making the baby sleepy. Kaiden was actually was about to fall asleep from the singing too. Well, the singing, and it was really late too. And something about the fire shining in his eyes made him think about about the sleepy times at home around the fire at christmas.

Smiling at those who were singing, Willy joined in with a matching little hum of his own. Hum hum hum hum, little star....
"You're all doing a fine job," he nodded at the singing leaders. "Keep it up." Baby was ALMOST asleep...
Oh, some people still had questions. And suggestions, apparently.
"I'm planning on raising him until he's old enough to live on his own, either in a reservation or in the wilderness," Willy answered very quietly. "And I'm glad SOMEONE also thinks my baby this little dragon won't grow up to be a cold-hearted killer.
He was also planning to have a few more lessons about the dragon, but who knew? So far, so good with this lesson, anyway.
"Roro." The man stopped stroking his dragon and blatantly BLINKED at the Slytherin girl. "Uh, never heard that one before, but all right." Whatever.
"Added and added," Williamson nodded to the next two suggestions.
More questions, coming from a Know It All Claw. No surprises there.
"I have never personally handled this particular breed of dragon, Aspen, no. They're extremely rare. But I suppose you were too busy talking to Scabbers there to hear my saying so earlier?" He gave the girl and the professor she was all buddy-buddy with a cold look.
Has anyone ever tried to be a foster parent to an.... OH FOR THE LOVE OF MERLIN. William stood up to his full height and crossed his arms at the child. "For your information, YES. Yes they have. While it is unusual for a.... solitary individual to take on the responsibility of raising a dragon, it HAS been done, and as far as I know," or cared to admit, "no one was harmed in the raising of said dragon."
And Willy was only raising this baby til... til it could live on its own. Sniffle sniffle.
He heard her aside and angrily pointed his wand to the open space of barn wall where he usually kept a running list of class notes. The list of suggested names, FRUITY INCLUDED, went up there.
Looking back down at his feet, William noticed that the baby dragon had, quite literally, fallen asleep on him. D'awwwwww. If that wasn't just the cutest thing.....! He could FEEL his anger at Aspen 'Asks-Too-Many-Questions' Odessa just melting away at the sight of his baby.
"It worked!" he whispered to the class, bending down to scoop up the baby dragon. He sat back down on his stool, which thankfully hadn't gone anywhere, and cradled it in his fireproof apron just like it was a real baby.
"The poll's up," Williamson continued whispering, "so feel free to go over to the board and mark up your vote with your wand. Or chalk. One per person, please." He had some chalk lying around his cauldron/box of supplies/junk scattered at the front near him somewhere.
Now then. "Class is dismissed, but if you'd like to come pet the baby dragon, please form an orderly line after you vote for its name. Homework will be posted on the noticeboard later this week."
And that was that. Successful hatching, hooha!
Kaiden was roused from his stupor when the others around him began getting up. Had Williamson said something about petting the baby? he must have since all the other students were making their way up there. On his way to the line, he stopped infront of the board and studied the names for a moment before casting his vote by drawing a mark with the chalk. When he finally got the the front of the line, he carefully petted the dragon, trying his best to not wake it. "Thanks for the amazing lesson." He whispered to the man holding the little dragon, before heading out of the barn. It was time for him to get some sleep now.

When it was his turn Vickers got on one knee and peered over the sleeping dragon, pausing for a moment just to observe. It looked so peaceful this creature, so hard to believe that in a few years time people need to keep away lest they become part of its food chain.
Carefully he reached out and gingerly patted the newborn. Its hide was very warm and very soft, so different he could imagine when it gets older and its scales starts to harden.
He stood up and turned to the Professor "Thank you Sir, for allowing us to be part of this. Good night Sir." he said as he hitched up his bag and made his way back to the castle.

William cleared his throat to answer the question of one of the last kids left petting the dragon.
"Yes, actually, every so often, the seasonal migration paths of Romanian Longhorns and Swedish Short-Snouts have a tendency to cross over in the mountains of Gerês, Portugal, and that is where these dragons are conceived." Well this was awkward. "It's fairly rare to find one of each breed in this location at the same time, however, so that would explain why they are so rare."
He smiled and nodded at the boy's whisper, and at the whispers of a few others, before going to put the dragon away in his makeshift cradle stall at the back of the barn.
Willy finished cleaning up the barn after the refreshments and such and put away his hatching things, including the shell (which he had to save and document and package up for the reserve in Romania). Then it was lights out and he looked in the baby dragon, Roro, one last time.
Sleep tight, baby!
