Arithmancy One: Introduction to Chaldean Numerology & Your Chaldean Expression Number
The windows in the Arithmancy classroom were cracked open slightly to allow some of the fresh Autumn air to infiltrate the room, even if it did have the effect of making it slightly chilly. Josephina was sitting perched in the chair behind the larger desk, seemingly lost in thought. However, when you enter, she will look up and give you a brief nod before resuming her transfixed expression.
On the board behind her, there's a few notes scrawled:
Quote:
Welcome to Arithmancy 2077-2078!
Take your seats! Take out your textbooks, parchment and quill, and we will begin shortly!
ooc: the lesson will begin in approximately 9-10 hours from now. Keep chatting to a minimum. Freshen up on the Arithmancy Rules if you need to and see you all in a couple of hours! =)Lesson has begun. Pay attention to MY last posts in here, and pretend as if you've been here the whole time. Thanks <3.
Nigel had no idea what these two systems were. They all sounded like gibberish to him. With him saying Pythagorean system and the Chaldean System, it made it sound like he was talking in a different language. Even the definitions of the two made no sense to Nigel.
Nigel at least thought it would help if he paid attention and kept on writing down notes. He even tried and failed to draw a chart which he threw away. At least this would all make sense to him in the future. Nigel really hoped that was the case. He did have a question though "Um Professor can i just keep taking notes since i have still no idea of what the two systems are?"

And nodded briefly. "Nice job," she commented.
Right then. Time to carry on with further discussions of the two systems. "So the Pythagorean Number system is more commonly used, but the strange thing I've always found was that while the Chaldean System has no sequential order in assigning values to letters, supposedly this system is actually more accurate." Which is probably why it hadn't needed to evolve over time, because why evolve something that already worked? "Why might the Chaldean Method be more accurate, do you think? Is in, what about the way the numbers are assigned to the letters do you think may make it more accurate?"
NICE JOB?!
Really, Hadley?! Sierra only worked next to forever on her diagram, but yeah--nice job. Blahh. At least she hadn't gotten some negative comment. Had she, and after she'd worked that hard, she'd have...have...have... Yeah. Done nothing. A student wasn't exactly in any position to challenge a professor.
So instead, she gave Hadley a small smile and a nod before looking away again.
Anyway...moving on to answering the question. A little hesitant, Sierra raised her hand. "Is it because the Chaldean Method is the only method that looks at the meanings of the letters in your name?" she asked. "Maybe we're able to get a deeper and better understanding, since the method goes into detail with each letter than makes up our name."

Anya smiled. "Thanks Professor." She then shot a smile over to Messer.
Then the Professor asked another question.
She raised her hand. "Well... the person... or people... that invented it put a lot of thought in it... since the letters aren't in order." And as a general rule, the more you thought about something, the better it turned out. She wasn't quite sure how it worked... but there had to something special about the way the letters were assigned with the numbers... "And then there's the compound number thing... there's more numbers you could get... Like, the more options you have, the more accurate and specific your results would be." It made sense to her.

Ella watched as Hadley checked over her diagram. She was a little nervous, especially because hers wasn't nearly as good as Alyssa's. Hadley didn't seem too disappointed though, which was great. The second year gave the woman a smile when she told her good job.
The next question was a tough one. Ella honestly wasn't sure why the Chaldean Method would be considered more accurate. It had been around in the old days so maybe people trusted it more? Hm..."Professor, maybe people think it's more accurate because it's more old school. I feel like some people might not like change and so they just kinda toss aside the Pythagorean theorem. "
Lana continued to write down notes as she listened to what her fellow classmates were replied. She wasn't sure about what she had said, but hoped it was right none the less. Feeling a nudge, she looked over to Laura and smiled. Leaning over, she whispered. "Looking very good," she smiled softly. It really was coming along well and it made her happy that Laura was applying herself. She would have to make sure that the two of them studied more together from now on.
Laura looked at her sister and didn't care that she was in lesson she hugged her but when she turned round she accidently caught the table with her elbow and *BANG* Laura rubbed her elbow why was it called a funny bone it was hurting her like crazy. "Sorry Professor." Laura said as she quickly burried herself back into her work.
"Perhaps more thought was put into the Chaldean system. The Chaldean system is also older so perhaps people may find it to be the more authentic system for arithmancy"< Oichi replied raising her hand and taking a guess at it.

In her mind the reading for say a Kat would be different than that for a Katherine. It was a possible thought. Raising her hand again, she tilted her head slightly. "Isn't it based on the Hebrew alphabet, which some believe gave rise to the use of alphabetic writing in Greek and then the Latin alphabet?"
Listening as the students began speaking, Josephina nodded at Lana. "In part, yes, the fact that it's based upon the Hebrew alphabet lettering equivalents does contribute to its accuracy." But there was more.

"Actually the fact that it's an older system does not mean anything toward its accuracy," Fina shook her head. "And you can't even really say it's been used more, since it's actually less popular." As some of them had made note of on their comparison diagrams.

Although she didn't completely understand what the vibrational value was, but had a thought that it was the way the numbers or letters were interpreted.
"Yes!" Well sort of anyway. They were getting closer. "It does relate to the fact that the letters on the Chaldean Table are actually representative toward the vibrational value, as opposed to systematic!"

But you should give yourself more credit, Penelope. You know more than you think." After all, no matter how you looked at Arithmancy one plus one still equaled two, and surely the first year knew that.
When Professor Hadley moved the lesson along, Kurumi set her diagram on the table in front of her, and beside her textbook, and thought for a moment about the question. She agreed a little with the Ravenclaw girl that had spoken, about it seeming to be a bit more personal and all that, but there was something a bit more factual on the Gryffindor's mind as she raised her hand. "Does it have something to do with the fact that the Chaldean method pays special attention and emphasis to the meanings of the letters or symbols which make up our alphabet? In ancient times, before there was a written alphabet like we know, people communicated in hieroglyphics where each letter stood for a particular object, action or emotion and are what the alphabet we have come to know today was based on. In a sense...the Chaldean method draws more on ancient energies and understandings of how humanity, each individual, understood words." Slowly, Kurumi lowered her hand and sort of cocked her head to the side. She wasn't entirely sure that had just made any sense. There was an answer in there somewhere...right?
Fina nodded at the sixth year, "Yes, it does have something to do with the fact that examines the actual meanings of the letters. The vibrational influence, if you will."

Different way of wording it from Kurumi and Zhenya, but same general points. "Exactly. Not so much the first part... but the part that it assigns letter based on connections... and the letter's essences, certainly is a valuable component toward its accuracy."

But she raised her hand, "Professor, could the Chaldean System be more accurate because it uses compound numbers in addition to single numbers? The single number just represents the physical appearance of a person's name, while the compound number shows the deeper meaning, and significance behind the name."
Ah, the first to mention the double digits ? "Yes! Another good point! Looking at the double digits... the individual components rather than just the final picture also contributes to the accuracy of the system."

Vibrations yes; she already agreed with someone else who mentioned that, so she just gave a brief smile to the Ravenclaw and listened to the next response.

"Professor could it be more accurate because it considers everything important. From the double digits when the numbers are first added, to the meaning of each letter and number and what they all represent individually?" Alyssa paused to think before continuing on.
"In the Chaldean system, the way the letters are assigned to the numbers is all based on spiritual inspiration. It depends on the sound and symbol it represents."
"I mean, the Chaldean method believes that when calculating your name both the double digits that one first ends up with, and the single digit that one eventually ends up with are both equally important. The single digit is believed to represent the physical outward appearance of a person's name."
Alyssa checked her textbook to make sure that she was on the right track, before she continued giving her answer. "The double digit which is also known as the Compound number represents the deeper, metaphysical, hidden influences or forces behind the name."
"I mean the Pythagorean method only considers what the single numbers, except for the master numbers, represent. It doesn't consider the letters of any importance, and not even the double numbers."
"So as one can see, more time is spent calculating one's life path or characteristics using the Chaldean Method than one does with the other method. Hence chances for a higher accuracy rate in the reading is better."
Who mentioned compound numbers, well rambled actually, and then talked about the spiritual inspiration involved too in this system. "Yes, all very trye points, Alyssa," Fina said, smiling at the fourth year.

Okay, I'm not making sense.
Dismayed, she grabbed her head in her cupped hands. This was more numerology than Maths.
Fina nodded at another Ravenclaw, who mentioned compound numbers as others before did. And also the common name. Just slightly different wording, but same general principles.

But then, the professor started talking... and the girl found it difficult to actually follow. So, the Pythagorean System was the one commonly used, and the Chaldean was more accurate, even though it had no sequential order in assigning values to letters? Hmmm. Raising her hand, she thought she'd better try something, rather than stay quiet. "Maybe if we assign each letter to numbers the way we want it, we can create something like... a secret code?" A secret code? Seriously? These weren't runes, to pass on super secret messages!
Ugh.
Fina blinked. "Except the letters aren't assigned to numbers the way we want it, but rather they're assigned based on age-old principles from the Ancient Babylons who looked at the vibrational influences behind each letter to determine what number." Yup. How's that for history. "But you could still create coded messages with number systems..." Actually she did a lesson or two a couple years back, but ... that might have been before Nora's time? Perhaps it was time for another Cryptic messages lesson soon.... heh.

"Yes, you're right. We make a great team." he smiled back.
Then, the professor started talking again about those two systems. Oh another question. Hands up. " Professor, Could it because the Chaldean Method is more...umm..spiritual?" Because it said that the ancient Chaldeans were known to have been immensely interested in astrology, spiritual guidance, oracles and other spiritual thingy.
Spiritual yes. Others mentioned this too, sort of, so Messer got a smile and nod to show he was thinking along the right track.

"The Pythagorean method looks at the meanings of the letters in your name," Fina countered. She could think of a few numbers that looked specifically toward the letters even. "But it's less to do with that then the fact of how the letters are assigned to numbers." Which is the part that made understanding rather tricky.

Vibrational and spiritual influences associated with each letter are what matters." And of course, the compound number thing, which others mentioned too.

But it's not generally taught because it's a lot harder to know and learn, compared with the simplicity that is the Pythagorean Method." So yes, if you thought the Pythagorean method was confusing wait until you get to this.

Before she could continue on though, she heard a bang and looked in the direction of a young Hufflepuff... yes, she remembered Laura. She had of course even noticed Lana helping Laura out with her diagram, as the Hufflepuff continued to strive on finishing the assignment.
She was about to ask if she was okay, but as Laura buried her nose back onto her books and parchment, she figured she better not draw more attention to the girl. That was probably the last thing she wanted.

More thought... older.... Yes to the more thought, but really, age had nothing to do with its accuracy. If anything, that would normally have been a contributing factor to it being LESS accurate or outdated even.
She'd already commented on both regards though, so for now...
"Accuracy, as many of you noted, can be contributed to a couple of factors with the Chaldean Method," Fina explained as she turned to work on writing the table on the board. "Some of those being the fact that it will look at compound numbers within individual names. But also the fact that in assigning the numbers to the letters, it uses spiritual and vibrational influences. These influences are ones that I'm afraid we won't expand too much on, as it's more detail than you need to know for the basic understanding of the system. But for those of you looking into possibly a future with Arithmancy, then Number Vibrations are something you will definitely be expanding your knowledge on in the future."
Enough logistics though, it was time to work on some calculations with the system. Time was moving quickly. "We'll start by calculating our Character Numbers, or Expression or Destiny numbers, using the Chaldean System." Fina went on. "One thing that is important to note is that all numbers calculated, whether using the Chaldean System or the Pythagorean System, have the same basic meanings and symbolism associated with it. No matter what system you use to find letters to numbers, numbers are constant. Anywhere, anytime."
"How do you find your Character Number?" Fina addressed. This was a question that even some of the younger ones should know.
ooc: oops, sorry, meant to continue this yesterday, but ... *sighs and pokes work* =/ Thanks for your patience though <3

Possible future with Arithmancy...Kurumi actually hadn't ever considered that seriously now that she thought about it. Although, the brief curse breaking assignment that they had done a few terms back had sparked her interested a little. Not as much as creatures continued to do, but it was on the back burner as it were.
Jotting down some more notes and scribbling a few things in the margin of her paper. Kurumi looked up as Professor Hadley finished speaking. Character Number? That was just another way for saying your Expression Number or Destiny Number, right? Setting her quill down on the table, Kurumi raised her hand. "You find your Character Number by assigning the proper numerical values to each letter of your full name - the one on your birth certificate. Once you do that, you add the values of each name separately and then add and reduce the total of each of your names to a single digit root number." Kurumi was pretty sure that they had calculated this number in the past, not that first or second years would have been around for that lesson, but she thought she remembered it.
Then again, Kurumi's memory was doing weird things these days.

The character number...Ella knew this one! She remembered calculating it in her first term. Raising her hand, the first year answered. "Professor, you find your character number by using your full name, the one given on your birth certificate, and you assign the correct number to each letter. Then you add them and eventually reduce down to one number, which will be your character number." Not the most eloquent answer even but Ella was glad she had remembered that much.
Nigel was happy that the professor did not mandate talking out loud about this , he did not understand it at all, and he was really happy he could just keep taking notes and just hopefully he learned something from this lesson.
Nigel continued taking notes and adding to them with what he was hearing from other older students and from the Slytherin and Gryffindor prefects.

She always got confused with all the formulas and the different ways to find them.
She had made a good point? Desiree smiled and was pretty pleased with herself. Especially since she didn't have very much experience with Arithmancy. She listened as the Professor talked, jotting down some notes, and then raised her hand to answer the next question,
"Professor, as a lot of people have said, to find your character number you have to determine the value for each individual letter in your full name," as in first, middle, and last, "and then add the values together to get the sum." And that was it. It was actually pretty simple, would they get to do that soon? Desiree hoped so.

Josephina nodded at all of them. "Quite right you all are, which this number should be familiar to calculate on some level, but the difference is what comes with the actual calculating with the Chaldean System. Not only will the values for each letter be different..." Fina paused and wrote her own name on the board:
JOSEPHINA
173585151
1+7+3+5+8+5+1+5+1
= 36
= 9
FAITH
81145
8+1+1+4+5

5+1+4+3+5+1

"But it isn't enough to just know what the final reduced single digit means, as the compound, or double-digit number values associated with each name have its own meaning." She paused another moment as she added the plus signs in her calculations.
"Any questions about my calculation?"

Writing down instructions and any little bits of clarification Kurumi felt she needed on her parchment, she lifted her gaze when Professor Hadley wrote her own name as an example up on the board and her eyes immediately fell on the striking similarities with her middle and last name. Questions? Yes please!
"Professor," Kurumi asked as she raised her hand. "Since using the Chaldean System implies that one needs to place more emphasis on the individual components instead of just the final single digit, does this mean that you personally resonate more with the number 1? Or is it more about the placement of certain numbers? Those numbers associated with your first, middle, and last name I mean. It just sort of reminds me of a Three Rune Spread." Past, present, and future being represented in the first, second, and third runes.

Fina shook her head. "No, the Chaldean doesn't imply you need place more emphasis on the individual double-digit components. Just that there is emphasis on those numbers. But having said that, single digit numbers tend to indicate what you appear to be in the eyes of others, whereas those compound numbers? So in my case, 10 and 30, would be like hidden influences, playing a role behind the scenes and somehow, mysteriously, foreshadow the future. The single digit numbers are more physical and material based .... whereas compound numbers are ... mysterious. Spiritual, even." True mysteries of numbers awaited on the other side of these meanings!
Anything else? Fina glanced around the room for more potential questions or concerns...
"Well if there are no other questions, then you may get started in calculating your Character Numbers using the Chaldean Number System on the board. I'll be walking around if you have any other questions or problems."
ooc: I'm going to sleep, but yes you SHOULD begin calculating the Expression/Character Number using the Chaldean System. You have AT LEAST 22 hours to work on this maybe more depending on how tired I am after work tomorrow ;P For the numbers 1-9, you can use the meanings found in the Textbook in THIS classroom, but numbers greater than 10, i recommend thisat least until I get around to adding a chapter. Feel free to check each other's work and good luck =)

Questions...questions...did he have any questions?
None that came to mind at the moment but who knew when he actually worked on the calculations no doubt to follow afterwards. and sure enough, the next words out of Hadley's mouth were instructed them to get to work figuring out each other their character/expression/destiny numbers. So Gideon switched over to a new side of the parchment to jot down his math. Laying out his three names first and then adding the appropriate corresponding numbers...1-8 this time instead of 1-9.
Quote:

2+5=7
Gavin
3+1+6+1+5=16
1+6=7
Gert
3+1+2+4=10
1+0=1
Character Number= 7+7+1=15
Given that the professor had mentioned that the original number BEFORE the final reduction played a part in the Chaldean system, he stopped at first on the number 15. The prefect looking at the description given to it by the new system and copying it down in his notes.
Quote:
15.
This is a number of occult significance, of magic and mystery; but as a rule it does not represent the higher side of occultism, its meaning being that the persons represented by it will use every art of magic they can to carry out their purpose. If associated with a good or fortunate single number, it can be very lucky and power*ful, but if associated with one of the peculiar numbers, such as a 4 or an 8, the person it represents will not hesitate to use any sort of art, or even ''black-magic," to gain what he or she desires.
It is peculiarly associated with "good talkers," often with elo*quence, gifts of music and art and a dramatic personality, combin*ed with a certain voluptuous temperament and strong personal magnetism. For obtaining money, gifts, and favours from others it is a fortunate number.
He then further reduced the number by adding each digit to each other and finishing with a number of 6. With the final number calculated, Gideon flipped the pages forward to look at the meaning for this number and copying it down as well. He had to admit, the second description seemed clearer to him and somewhat fitting.
Quote:
SIX (6): Your mission in life is to serve. Your purpose is to care for family and loved ones, all while using your adoration of beauty and community to create closeness in life around you. Learning to express altruism and giving comfort to others will bring you closer to your destiny. You're destined for nurturing and beautifying. Love with balance.
Alyssa corrected her mistake in leaving out the double numbers in a later post.

Alyssa quickly copied down the Chaldean Numerical Chart into her journal before starting to calculate her Expression/Character Name. She wasn't sure whether her Y's should be considered as I's in this case, like the way it was calculated using the Pythagorean Method, but seeing the Professor Hadley had calculated her Y like a normal Y, Alyssa decided that she would do the same.
She took out a parchment and starting calculating.

Since the Professor had mentioned that the double digit did play an important significance in the Chaldean system, she looked up her textbook to see what the number 14 represented and quickly added it to her parchment.

14.
This is a number of movement, combination of people and things, and danger from natural forces such as tempests, water, air or fire. This number is fortunate for dealings with money, specula*tion and changes in business, but there is always a strong element of risk and danger attached to it, but generally owing*to the actions and fool hardiness of others. If this number comes out in calcula*tions of future events the person should be warned to act with caution and prudence.
Now that she had what the double digit represented, Alyssa continued to reduce the number down to a single digit.

Now that she had reduced her character name number down to a single digit, Alyssa referred to the textbook again, to see what the number 5 represented according to the Chaldean System and added that to her parchment.

Now that she had everything written down. She checked her work one more time, before leaning over to see how her other friends were doing with theirs.
"Hey Minnie, Ella, Oakey....what did you guys come up with? Here's what I found with my character name."Alyssa showed her work to the others.

Lana quietly continued to listen to what was all being said and jotted down more notes. It kind of started to make more sense to her and she just hoped that it would stick when it counted. Copying down as neatly as she could the Chaldean Numerology, she pulled out a new sheet of parchment and started her own calculations for her Character Number. She remembered that how they were to use the name they are known as and wrote her fill name out. She really didn't go by anything but her birth name. No really nicknames for her.
Writing her full name out, she started to assign each letter a number as per the Chaldean system and started the calculations.

Glancing over her work, she noticed a few double digits. Those were supposed to be important, if she remembered correctly. Each probably did mean something and she figured that she would have to refer back to them. Looking all the compound numbers up, she copied them on to her parchment as well.
Quote:
10.
Symbolized as the "Wheel of Fortune". It is a number of honor, of faith and self-confidence, of rise and fall; one's name will be known for good or evil, according to one's desires; it is a fortunate number in the sense that one's plans are likely to be carried out.

16.
This number has a most peculiar occult symbolism. It is pictured by "a Tower Struck by Lightning from which a man is falling with a Crown on his head." It is also called "the Shattered Citadel".
It gives warning of some strange fatality awaiting one, also danger of accidents and defeat of one's plans. If it appears as a "compound" number relating to the future, it is a warning sign that should be carefully noted and plans made in advance in the endeavour to avert its fatalistic tendency.

Looking over each of them, she tilted her head in thought. She wasn't all that sure what to make of them all at the moment. She figured that each meant something on different levels, but she focused on the last one. It was the number that she would simplify to get her Character Number. She realized she needed to read up on this more as she moved on to look for meaning of her Character Number. Flipping back through her text, she found the number of her Character Number and jotted it down.
Quote:

Setting her quill down, she looked over what she had written and tilted her head again. It did sound very much like her.
So Chelle had to calculate her Character Number through the Chaldean Number System.
Oooohh, FUN.
She took out her quill and ink and started jotting down her full name on the parchment in front of her.

Flipping through her textbook, she found the meaning behind her Character Number.
Quote:
11.
This is an ominous number to occultists. It gives warning of hidden dangers, trial, and treachery from others. It has a symbol of a "Clenched Hand", and "a Lion Muzzled", and of a person who will have great difficulties to contend against.
Then Chelle further narrowed down the double-digit number to a single digit and noted the meaning behind it. Her Character Number was 2.
Quote:
TWO (2): Your mission in life is to engender harmony. Your purpose is to seek cooperation, find balance, and be a patient team player - all to develop your sense of relationship. You need to learn compassion and to be emotionally receptive. Being adaptable and persuasive will bring you closer toward your destiny. You're destined for peacemaking. Go forth and share it.
She stared at the definition for a while and waited for it to sink in. Was that really true about her? She didn't think so. Frowning, she tried to understand what that definition really meant.
Yes, we've been here. Just quiet. And we're throwing a question in here now.

Once the lesson had started, Stella had honestly just decided to stay quiet. She'd been taking notes, but not exactly offering any responses to the discussion questions. There hadn't exactly seemed to be a point in giving the same responses as everyone else, seeing as most of what she knew was simply from the textbook anyhow. The fact they were going to be exploring an entirely different form of numerology was intriguing, though, and she wondered if that was going to play into the NEWTs at the end of term. She made sure to copy down the chart, for sure. Just in case, and then she went back to listening to the lecture. Double digit numbers have significance, she thought, underlining that concept in her notes before a thought occurred to her. "The significance of compound numbers in the Chaldean system is different than the concept of Master Numbers in the Pythagorean system? And Karmic Numbers?," she asked, raising her hand as they'd been set loose to start calculating. It was just a curiosity she had, considering ther was a ten in the professor's calculations. Plus, she hadn't exactly established if they were only supposed to worry about compound numbers in their final calculations or every single one they got while calculating.
Once she'd asked her question, though, she got started on her own calculations. The answer didn't particularly have much effect on her answer, as far as she knew, at least. So she may as well keep things moving.
SPOILER!!: calculations

Character number: 1+4+5 = 10 = 1
Looking over her numbers, she realized there were quite a few double digit numbers in there, and she underlined them just to make sure they were noticeable on the odd chance Professor Hadley looked over her work. Maybe her question had more significance than she thought, but for the time being she decided to just note down the meanings of those numbers. As long as she didn't have to try and decipher their interpretations quite yet.
Text Cut: compound number meanings

13. This is a number indicating change of plans, place and such-like and is not unfortunate, as is generally supposed. In some of the an*cient writings it is said, "He who understands the number 13 will be given power and dominion". It is symbolized by the picture of a "Skeleton" of "Death," with a scythe reaping down men, in a field of new-grown grass where young faces and heads appear crop*ping up on every side. It is a number of upheaval and destruction. It is a symbol of "Power" which if wrongly used will wreak destruction upon oneself. It is a number of warning of the unknown or unexpected, if it becomes a "compound" number in one's calculations.
19. This number is regarded as fortunate and extremely favorable. It is symbolized as "the Sun" and is called "the Prince of Heaven." It is a number promising happiness, success, esteem and honor and promises success in one's plan for the future.
23. This number is called "the Royal Star of the Lion." It is a pro*mise of success, help from superiors and protection from those in high places. In dealing with future events it is a most fortunate number and a promise of success of one's plan's.
At least for th emos tpart, besides the number 13, all the interpretations in the book were kind of good. She couldn't quite say she understood exactly what the other meaning actually meant, and she found herself staring at it for a few more seconds than she'd expected. It was almost like she was in Divination, which she understood about as much as the interpretation part of this subject. Maybe it's the 'Death' thing, and the 'Wheel of Fortune' and the 'Sun', she thought. In any case she realy wasn't sure about those, so she moved on to the simple single number calculation she'd gotten at the end. The actual Character Number, as far as she was concerned. Everything else just confused her more, so she flipped back to the meaning for that.
Text Cut: Character number meaning
ONE (1): Your mission in life is to cultivate the self and to become a leader. Your purpose in life is to be indomitable, take the initiative, be independent, original, innovative and take charge - all to develop your sense of self, your will, and your determination. Learning to stand on your own, think for yourself, and individuate your character, as well as new things, new ideas, and unique activities provide great opportunity for your to approach your destiny. You are destined for leadership - be it and teach it.
Noting that down as well, she just looked at it, then back at the confusing other interpretations. It certainly was way more positive than the one other interpretation, but then she'd never really seen herself as any sort of a leader. Original, for sure, and independent, but not exactly a leader. Unless that applied to her wanting to get the lead role in a play eventually.

Kurumi had to admit she was a little disappointed that it wasn't as complicated as she had made it out to be in her head, with whatever numbers having some sort of association with the particular placement within their name. Then again, Professor Hadley hadn't actually address that part of her question at all, so maybe the Gryffindor could just continue to look at this under the illusion of these thoughts for a little longer. Yep.
Picking up her quill again, Kurumi set it against her parchment and began her calculations. It was times like these that Kurumi was rather grateful not to have been given a middle name at birth - it just wasn't something that people did in Japan due to the historical significance not being there.
SPOILER!!: Kurumi's calculations
NOTE: Using the Chaldean Method of numbering. Double digit numbers hold significance!
K U R U M I ● H O L L I N G B E R R Y
2 6 2 6 4 1 ● 5 7 3 3 1 5 3 2 5 2 2 1
Character Number Also known as Expression Number or Destiny Number. It is an element of the Core that describes your life's purpose, what you must live up to in this lifetime, your opportunities for success, the qualities and manner of living you must develop, what you are destined for, the target you are aiming for in life, and the kind of work that would be a natural expression of your Life Path.
K U R U M I
2 6 2 6 4 1
2+6+2+6+4+1 = 21
2+1 = 3
21: This number is symbolized by the picture of "the Universe", and it is also called "the Crown of the Magi". It is a number of ad*vancement, honors, elevation in life and general success. It means victory after long initiation and tests of determination. It is a for*tunate number of promise if it appears in any connection with future events.
H O L L I N G B E R R Y
5 7 3 3 1 5 3 2 5 2 2 1
5+7+3+3+1+5+3+2+5+2+2+1= 39
3+9 = 12 = 1+2 = 3
39: This is a number of thoughtful deduction, retrospection, and mental superiority over one's fellows, but as it seems to belong completely to the mental plane, the persons it represents, are likely to put all material things on one side — not because they have to, but because they wish to do so. For this reason it is neither for*tunate nor unfortunate, for either depends on the mental outlook of the person it represents. It can be all powerful, but it is just as often indifferent according to the will or desire of the person.
12: The symbolism of this number is suffering and anxiety of mind. It is also indicated as "the Sacrifice" or "the Victim" and generally foreshadows one being sacrificed for the plans or intrigues of others.
Character number: 3+3= 6 6: Your mission in life is to serve. Your purpose is to care for family and loved ones, all while using your adoration of beauty and community to create closeness in life around you. Learning to express altruism and giving comfort to others will bring you closer to your destiny. You're destined for nurturing and beautifying. Love with balance.
Kurumi wasn't entirely sure if the fact that her last name produced two compound numbers had an significance or not, but Kurumi noted the meaning of both of them just the same. Maybe the first implied a more mysterious and deeper meaning than the second one...or the other way around... Kurumi clearly liked making these things more complicated than they really were.
Glancing around, Kurumi wondered if any of the younger students (PENELOPE?!) needed assistance.

Ooh. They were gonna calculate stuff now. That was going to be fun. Indy loved doing the calculations bit. Although sometimes she wasn’t too good at it. But she was trying to get better at it now. She began by writing her name in her pretty hand writing, so that she would be able to read it. Perfect. Now she could start put the numbers in. Indy went a bit more slowly than she would usually do, because she wanted to make sure that she had everything perfect.
Okay. So her number first number was 23. When it was not put down to a single digit anyway. That was a bit number. Indy leant through to have a mooch through the textbook. To see what 23 meant.
SPOILER!!: 23

This number is called "the Royal Star of the Lion." It is a pro¬mise of success, help from superiors and protection from those in high places. In dealing with future events it is a most fortunate number and a promise of success of one's plan's.
The royal star of lions? Well wasn’t that a posh number. Indy liked that. And she was going to be successful? Maybe that meant they would win the quidditch cup this year. That would be fun. Indy liked this number. She liked it a lot. But she decided to see what the number would be if she reduced it to.
SPOILER!!: 5
FIVE (5): Your mission in life is to adjust, evolve, and advance. Learning to express your ingenuity and being a free spirit will assist your movement toward your destiny. You're destined for liberation and freedom. Move forward and embrace change.
Ooh. Her purpose was to embrace opportunity and follow her curiosity. That was interesting. She liked the bit about being a free spirit. That sounded like her. But Indy figured that she liked the other number better. It had a cool name too. That was always fun.

Spike grudgingly wrote out his full name. He really didn't like his middle name, even if it was taken from his father. It seemed too...old and formal, which to be fair, was kinda like his Dad. 'Spike' was so much better.
Eyeing the example on the board, Spike picked up his quill and starting filling in the numbers. He'd purposely spaced the letters apart so that he had enough room to do his working out. If Indy could do okay in Arithmancy, there was no reason why he couldn't, right?

So basically he was curious about the world, resourceful and liked to keep moving. Well, that didn't sound too bad. He wasn't sure about the natural forces (c'mon, hurricanes were awesome!) or business bit (yawn), but he certainly liked to explore and not sit still. He wondered what Indy got...

Laura looked at the Professor, this was going to be hard but she would give it a go, if she was wrong then she wouldn't mind at least she was trying her best and she didn't have the brains like her sister, she was sure Lana had most of her brain as well.

Laura looked at her work, and stared was she actually working hard, maybe it was because Lana was sat next to her and she knew if Lana told daddy she wasn't working hard she would be in trouble.
Laura looked down at her parchment and then continued.
SPOILER!!: Laura's work continued
Laura's first number was 17 and so she decided to see what it said, she turned to the correct page and read it.
Quote:
17: This is a highly spiritual number, and is expressed in symbolism by the 8-pointed Star of Venus; a symbol of "Peace and love". It is also called "the Star of the Magi" and expresses that the person it represents has risen superior in spirit to the trials and difficulties of his life or his career . It is considered a "Number of immortality" and that the person's name "lives after him". It is a fortunate number if it works out in relation to future events, provided it is not associated with the single number of fours and eights.
Laura then continued to take the number down. 1+7=8 so her last number was 8, she decided to see what it said about that.
Quote:
EIGHT (8) Your mission in life is to acquire command of self. Your purpose is to accomplish and flourish, using your skill at business and organization. Learning to embody your authentic nature and discover your own power and being visionary will move you toward your destiny. You're destined for material success. Get out there and be the masterful leader you were born to be.
Laura looked at her work and smiled, she nudged her sister. "Lana looked, I'm born to be a leader." Laura whispered. "Do you like my work? is it okay?" Laura hoped Lana did like it.
