Glenn opened her journal and wrote out a few notes before she started on her calculations. You never know when you might need the notes. Besides, she had OWLs in two years... it seemed much closer than it had in her first year. In her first she didn't take any notes at all. She scrawled her name across the paper in navy ink. Thelma. Her grandmother's name. Her grandmother had been at her house the holidays - good thing all that extended family was gone now.

She changed to black ink and worked out her calculations. Hopefully she hadn't made any mistakes this time. Last year - well, she was famous for always making errors.



Glenn read through the meaning of her numbers. Act with caution, surrounded by danger??

That sounded... light-hearted. The badger looked over her numbers again with a bemused expression on her face. Heh. Lovely future she had.

Ella didn't have any questions really so she took notes on what Kurumi had asked and how Professor Hadley explained the answer. And now it was time to work, yes? Pulling her sheet of blank parchment towards her, Ella got her quill and began writing out her name as it appeared on her birth certificate.



Next, Ella pulled her textbook towards her, curious as to what the numbers 11 and 2 said about her and her character.



After reading what 11 could mean, Ella shuddered. Huh? Danger? This couldn't possibly be right! She hoped she had miscalculated or something because surely she didn't need any kind of warnings in her life right now right? RIGHT?

Now nervous, she went on to read about the number 2.



Wait a minute! So she was destined for peacemaking but she had to watch out for others who sought out to derail her? Yikes. This was some dodgy stuff!

This was fun It was like getting to know yourself!

Nigel never really thought he wanted upheaval or destruction. And of course he wanted power but only in his dreams, not in real life. It was a cool definition though, Nigel thought.

Zack was all so thrilled to calculate his character number. He wanted to find out if it was the same as professor wouldn’t it be a great thing if his and professors character numbers matched? Wow! for some reason it was exciting for Zack.

He quickly took his quill in his hand and started scribbling in it the number that represented the letter for his name.

As Alyssa continued to look at her calculations, she realized that she had made a mistake and had totally ignored the compound numbers 12 and 30 when doing her calculations, so she quickly looked through her textbook until she found what the number 30 represented and quickly wrote down the meaning adding that to her parchment.



She hoped that she was right this time. She definitely couldn't afford to mess up in Professor Hadley's class.

Noting down the Professor's explanations as fast as he could, he went over his notes to try to see if it makes sense to him. It did a little. But as they were quickly moving to calculations he took out a fresh parchment and started matching the letters of his name to the Chaldean system like so...



A 9? He leafed through his textbook to look up the meaning, curious as to what it would say


Whoah. The Ravenclaw blinked and re-read the text. This sounded like a tall order. Could he ever live up to anything that it says? And he was destined for... broader horizons? Reach out and help someone? He was painfully shy, although he is making an effort to be more sociable, he would usually just do things alone where he was most comfortable. He shook his head. At this point he feels a bit intimidated by it all.



He straightened up as he looked out the open windows and had a thought. The Chaldean system actually uses the name that one most commonly goes by. He usually just goes by his nickname Vickers. Pulling out a fresh parchment, he started to recalculate using his nickname


Hmm, so this time it was a 10. Vickers leafed through a couple more pages to look up the double digit meanings and read the following...


Errr okayyyy. This wasnt helping. Once again it was touching on his weaknesses-- confidence and such, and the whole universal good and evil depending on which side of the moral spectrum he grows into sort of thing.

He straigtened up and raised his hand "Professor, given that we are using the Chaldean system, would you prefer that we use our full name or just the name we most often use?"

Alright. The double digit of each name were important. Got it.

Okay... so now the math part, the one Nora didn't really enjoy. Looking over the Chaldean Number System, she started scribbling every letter of her name and each assigned number.

And now... what? It looked like she had the number five, but she had no idea what that meant, neither did she know whether they were supposed to look in their textbooks for meanings, or if professor Hadley would give them. So Nora decided to wait and see what would happen next.

So...they had to write stuff down now? Penelope wasn't sure whether that was better or worse than practicing a new spell. At least she knew she could write and what-not, so maybe it was better. Didn't seem all that fun though.

She wasn't sure about using her middle name though. She knew it, she was sure she did, but she'd never thought about it much and it wasn't like anyone called her by that name, so she hadn't heard it very frequently nor was she certain on how to spell it. So she could just not use it, yeah? She was just going to assume because she didn't want to ask.

Okay...so that wasn't really what she was expecting. Silvia didn't really think she was much of a leader. But who knows, maybe over time she would grow to be a better leader than she thought she was. She did think that the determined and had a strong will though; well, at the very least she was stubborn.

Paulie stretched his right wrist a little. Sheesh, this note-taking was beefing up his arm forearm muscles! After dipping his quill in his ink again, the boy set off to complete his own calculations to find his character number.

And... right off the bat, he was told it was an unfortunate number. So much for that. He read on, only to find out that it WAS horrible. Like... really horrible. Treachery, trials, tribulations? Unexpected dangers, unreliable friends, AND grief and deception caused by members of the opposite sex?!

Paulie paled. According to this, he was going to be lose Louisa and Adam as friends - on top of his other friends, too - Tori was going to cheat on him and their relationship would end, AND he was going to be backstabbed in the military, which would lead to his imminent DEATH.

Wow, this was bad. He took a deep breath. Okay, it's only Arithmancy class, right? Breeeaaathe.

Of course it was probably all rubbish anyway..... right?

He quickly pushed these thoughts away and then flipped through the pages for his character number meaning.

Desiree took out another parchment and started copying down her name, she looked again at the numerology chart, to match up the letters. It made sense.. but at the same time it didn't. She just hoped she didn't mess anything up, at least not too badly.



Ok, so that seemed rightish. She flipped through her textbook to find the meanings. She didn't know whether to just put the character number or each individual one. She decided to write them all down, why not?



Soo what Desiree got from that was that she was going to have a pretty good future, as long as she worked for it, it wasn't just going to be luck. Or something like that.. it seemed nice though, but moving on..



She didn't know which one to choose, or if they were both significant. She read over them, and was happy to see they were at least cheerful, no terrible omen or something. She was going to spread peace and inspire others apparently. Desiree wasn't so sure how much they fit: adaptable and compassionate? maybe, but a leader and a teacher? not really. Either way it was interesting.

Throughout the lesson so far, Dale had remained quiet, merely glancing surreptitiously into his book whenever Hadley had deemed an answer correct. He didn't know what he was doing here; it just seemed like a good idea to take this. Jake had said to...

Dale had been hoping for a lesson that wouldn't rely on his full name... but apparently that was not to be. Pulling his parchment and quill and ink towards him, he scratched the directions of what he was supposed to do at the top of the page and then got to work.



Drat! Dale had been hoping he didn't get one of THOSE numbers. He was never sure when he had to ignore it or use it.

"Stupid long name..."

What was WITH his family and long names?! Didn't they KNOW about this subject?

To check he was on the right track, Dale peeeeeeeered up and over to another desk. He wasn't copying; that would be pointless in this class unless there was another kid with his very same name. But... but they all seemed to be looking at different numbers. Dale wracked his brains to remember what Hadley said, and simply couldn't...

Dale stopped, looked at his parchment and placed a finger beside each added number after each name. Did he need them all? Hadley only found one...

"I am so confused," Dale muttered, placing his hand up. He didn't want to admit how lost he was, because he was meant to know this stuff, surely, even though he had been homeschooled. Maybe Hadley would see he calculations, some of them scratched out and numbers all over the joint... or maybe he should just say so. "Like... what am I meant to do with these numbers? Is this wrong?"

What. The. Heck.

Since when was '1+1' a difficult thing to do?!

Minerva sat at her seat. She looked around and saw everyone working hard. She turned back to her book feeling frustrated. She never struggled with school, not that it came easy but she always figured it out. Why did it seem this was not going to be the same. She pulled her parchment near and began to write the letters of her name.
She then pulled her book near and started to write the numbers. She wrote out her entire name with the numbers.
Once she wrote the numbers she looked back to double check and realized that she had been on the wrong page. She was using the wrong number system. Frustrated she crossed it all out and turned to the right page. She read through the letter numbers and started with her first time.

Minerva read through the meaning and smiled a bit. Who wouldn't like that meaning she thought. Then she moved on to her middle name.

Minerva thought this was interesting as well. She had been through many different things. She look back at her work to make sure she was following it correctly. She thought she did, but she would see once Professor Hadley looked it over. She then turned to her last name.

She found this to be different. You will be known for good or evil. She didn't like the sound of that. That was a lot of pressure to be either good or evil. She didn't want to be evil, so did she have to work harder to make sure she wouldn't be known for evil.
Next she put all her name results together to figure out the last calculation and meaning.


Minerva read over the last meaning and sat thinking about this. She liked the advice it was giving and though of ways to use it, but she wondered what her destiny was. What would she be moving toward. She questioned this as she waited to see if her all her work was finally right.

Elise just stared blankly at Professor Hadley as she explained about the Chaldean and Pythagorean number systems and such. The chart on her parchment when compared to what was being said didn't resemble each other in any way whatsoever. She knew she was awful at this, she knew it really well. But now it was name calculating time. Great.



Thoroughly confused, she flipped open the textbook to find the meaning of the number 17.

This is a highly spiritual number, and is expressed in symbolism by the 8-pointed Star of Venus; a symbol of "Peace and love". It is also called "the Star of the Magi" and expresses that the person it represents has risen superior in spirit to the trials and difficulties of his life or his career . It is considered a "Number of immortality" and that the person's name "lives after him". It is a fortunate number if it works out in relation to future events, provided it is not associated with the single number of fours and eights.

Now what on earth was that supposed to mean? Moving on, she calculated her ridiculous middle name.



25: This is a number denoting strength gained through experience, and benefits obtained through observation of people and things. It is not deemed exactly "lucky", as its success is given through strife and trials in an earlier life. It is favorable when it appears in regard to the future.

Rubbing the bridge of her nose, she blinked hard. What was with this stuff and her future? It's just Arithmancy. It didn't mean anything. Right? Right. Last Name.



33: This number has no potency of its own and consequently has the same meaning as 24 — which is also a 6 — and the next to it in its own series of "compound" numbers.

Fascinating. Now she had to find 24.

24: This number is also fortunate; it promises the assistance and association of those of rank and position with one's plans; it also denotes gain through love and the opposite sex; it is a favorable number when it comes out in relation to future events.

Okay. Now, Elise was getting seriously creeped out. What was with these numbers and her future? A healthy future nonetheless. Who knew, maybe Eddie'd send him to St. Mungo's. That'd be nice.

But she had to calculate that last number before she could do very much. So dipping her quill in the ink, she crossed the fingers on her right hand as she wrote.



21: This number is symbolized by the picture of "the Universe", and it is also called "the Crown of the Magi". It is a number of advancement, honors, elevation in life and general success. It means victory after long initiation and tests of determination. It is a fortunate number of promise if it appears in any connection with future events.

This was just baffling. Going over her calculations again, Elise saw the numbers blur a little and double. Rubbing her eyes, she frowned. "I'm never going to get this right," she muttered. Maybe Professor Hadley'd come over and help?

Sierra peered back at the work she'd done so far. She knew she'd added everything up and come up with the sum of all her names, but now she just needed to interpret...well, all of it. So what was that she'd heard about double digit numbers? Was she supposed to interpret those, too? To be on the safe side, she just copied down the interpretations for the double digits she saw in her calculations.



So first of all, the number fourteen told her that she better watch out. She might be rich, but there'd be risks, as well. ...but the number twenty-five said she'd be alright after all. She'd come out stronger in the end. Number thirty-five directed her to number twenty-six, which said the future wasn't exactly great.

DEAR MERLIN! Was she going to be okay or not?! See, this was why she hated Arithmancy!

...but there were the single digits to keep in mind, too.



Err...where are they supposed to find those interpretations at? That did it. She was officially lost again.

Keefer shook himself mentally. It felt like he had zoned out and missed the entire lesson up to this point. He stared at the board, noting Hadley's example. Those numbers don't all match up... he realized. We must be using the Chaldean system. This didn't bode well. Keefer was far less comfortable with it.

He pulled a piece of parchment towards him and scribbled down his name, then carefully wrote the values associated with each letter. This is so... wrong! He had most of the values memorized with the Pythagorean system, so some of these.. just weird.



He added a new section to his calculations for the final number. Let's see. Nine and six make fifteen, plus eight is 23, then those make five! He wrote 5 and underlined it. Flipping to chapter three, he consulted the table to find the meaning of his number. "Five: Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch," he read aloud quietly. Well, that was an interesting assessment.

After given the students a few moments to start their calculations, she then proceeded to walk around and overlook their parchments. Stopping first at the desk of the male Gryffindor Prefect. "Mister Gert. I think you'll find that if you check the number system again, you have mistakenly wrote the wrong number equivalent for the letter E in your surname." And to think, he did it correct in his other names.

"Also, you should look at the compound numbers for each individual name, as well as the final one of your names combined." Mmhm.

A natural at Arithmancy, this girl was. Smiling at the second year, she nodded at work. "Very good," she said, placing a small gold star by her work. She even got the interpretations figured out!

Stopping at another young claw's desk, she looked over her work and nodded, but then frowned slightly. "Oh, oh... your first name dear.... Michelle.... check your addition on that." Because she counted it twice and it was NOT 32. Which meant of course that her final answer was off too....

"Yes and no," Fina said, hearing an older Ravenclaw ask a question. "The double digits have significant in the Chaldean System, as do Karma and Master numbers in the Pythagorean, but their meanings may or may not coincide. But more than likely, they will, as number meanings are fairly consistent no matter who studies them." Looking over her work, she placed a small gold star on Stella's parchment as well. "Very good."

Seeing the other Gryffindor prefect looking rather disappointed, Fina approached to have a look at her work as well. She seemed to grasp the method well enough and she added a gold star to her parchment as well. "Nice job," Of course, but before she walked away, she couldn't resist adding more. "But was there something else bothering you about the Chaldean method?" She wasn't a mind reader after all; that was more Calista's territory.

Approaching the desk of another Ravenclaw after the Prefect's, Josephina looked over the girl's calculations and nodded .... it looked right, but then .... NO WAIT. "Uh... Indiana dear? Your surname, ..." She hesitated a moment, checking the addition again. "You miscalculated the digits there." And therefore her final answer was off too.

Seeing the other, older Hutchinson's parchment only confirmed that what she calculated for their surname was correct and that Indy had mis-added. But she wasn't alone. While the male had added their surname correctly, his first name was off slightly. "Yes, the numbers do add up to 19 in your first name, but well, check that addition again in reducing." Cause like how he reduced to 2, she had NO idea.

Cautiously approaching the Hyde sisters again... she looked over Laura's work and blinked. And blinked again.

"Laura. That's .... correct," she smiled, and placed a gold star on her parchment as well. "But well, there is ONE thing. With your interpretations, you should look at the compound numbers for the individual names, as well. So 13, 25, and 15." But other than that, she did good!

Josephina approached the desk of another of her Hufflepuff's next, just as she noticed her perusing her work - in thought and reflection more than likely. Looking it over, she nodded and placed a gold star on her work. "Very good!"

And then moved to look at another Hufflepuff's work and smiled at her calculations as well. She added a gold star next to her calculations as well, before commenting. "Very nice, but just one thing. Make sure you also look at the individual compound numbers as well as the whole. For instance, the 12 and 26."

"Just a couple things to note," Fina said as she looked over the Gryffindor's parchment. "For one, you miscalculated the numbers in your surname. Also, you should look at the meanings of the individual compound numbers, as well as the final answer."

Looking over at the young Ravenclaw's parchment next, she nodded and added a gold star to his parchment as well. "Good, good, except make sure you look at the compound numbers for the individual names, as well as the whole. So the 17 and 32."

And now over to another Gryffindor's desk, Josephina looked and nodded and placed a gold star on his parchment as well. "Good job," she noted. "BUT one thing which is to make sure you look at the meanings for the compound numbers in the individual names. 13 and 19, in your case."

Fina beamed at Alyssa when she noticed her go back and add the compound numbers from the individual names that she'd forgotten. Checking the girl's calculations, she nodded and added a gold star. "Very nice job!"

Hearing another Ravenclaw have a question for her - about his calculations no doubt - Josephina strode over to have a look at Vickers' work.

Looking at it, she placed a gold star on his parchment before addressing his question. "Good question. Considering that this IS the Chaldean method, then I think using your most commonly called name would be alright for this method." They still needed their middle and surnames though. "One other thing about your calculations though, is to make sure you have a look at the meanings of the compound numbers for your individual names. So in the case of using Vickers, this would be 22 and 33."

Fina was back to another Gryffindor, and overlooked the girl's calculations a moment. And nodded, as she had even made note of the compound numbers, but then .... as she glanced down to her character number calculation, Fina frowned.

"Good, except that you miscopied the number from Phillips, as your surname totaled 5. So your character number is off slightly." Mhm. She calculated the HARD parts all correct.

Josephina approached a young Slytherin girl's desk next and looked over at her calculations. She nodded in approval and then noticed the girl's puzzled expression.

"Next you have to look up what the numbers mean," she explained. "To find your compound numbers meanings, aka the double digit numbers from each name and your final answer as well, you use the chapter on the Chaldean Method" (here, as I haven't added this stuff to the site textbook yet ...)

"And then for your character number, it's the same as the number meanings found for your character number when using the Pythagorean system, as numbers are constant in meaning."

Josephina looked over at the small Gryffindor next and placed a gold star on her parchment. "Nice job," she added as she noted the girl reading the meanings of her numbers and let her be.

Looking over the young claw's work, Fina nodded and added a gold star to her parchment. "Nice job, but just one thing. Make sure you also look at the compound numbers for the individual names, so like, 18, 15, and 35 in your case."

And then another claw was done. Looking over at her parchment, she nodded in approval and added a gold star for the second year as well. "Nicely done."

Looking to the head boy next, Josephina nodded at his work and added a gold star to his parchment as well. He even interpreted the compound numbers. For everything. "Nice job, but one thing which is to make sure you look at the meaning for your reduced character number as well. The two. Which you can find by using the same meanings you use for the Pythagorean."

Fina looked over at Jory's work and nodded in approval, placing a gold star on his parchment as well. "Nice work," she commented.

Looking at a young Slytherin's parchment next, Fina nodded in approval and added a gold star to her parchment as well. "Good job," she said, simply enough.

Hearing another confused remark, Josephina looked at his parchment and nodded in approval. And added a gold star to his parchment too, cause of that NAME and his numbers were RIGHT too, even if he didn't know what to do next. "Your numbers are correct. Next you look at the meanings. So your final answer is two, so you look at the meanings for Character Numbers and that is the same as the meanings under the Pythagorean System."

"But also, with the Chaldean System, you should look at the compound - or double digits, associated with each individual name." She paused and pointed out the 13, 18, 26, and 53. "And those meanings can be found here."

Josephina nodded in approval, after moving on from Dale's desk toward another Hufflepuff - Minerva's. She smiled as she had self-corrected and placed a gold star on her parchment as well. "Nice job."

Hearing more mutterings, Fina looked toward a Ravenclaw girl and strode over to have a look and nodded in approval. "But you did get it correct," she smiled and placed a gold star on her parchment. She even added meanings for the compound numbers too!

Seeing a confused Slytherin Prefect next, Fina strode over to have a look at her parchment and nodded in approval, adding a gold star to her work. "Good start, with everything. But the single digit meanings you need to look up isn't for the individual names, but for your final result. The two. Which you find in the same place you would if you were using the Pythagorean System." Numbers were consistent like that.

And last, but not least, for now anyway, Josephina made her way toward her Captain's desk and had a look at his calculations. And added a gold star to his parchment as well. "Good job, but one thing is to make sure you don't forget to look at the meanings of the individual compound numbers as well," she nodded. Aka the 27, 24, and 17. And the 23 as well, technically speaking.



Right then, as most of them had finished with their calculations, except for a few that had made a few careless errors, Josephina felt content that actually seemed to catch on rather easily to this method. "As those of you make those corrections I pointed out, I just have one last question. There is one particular number calculation that will be the same no matter which system is used. Any ideas which number calculation this is?"

Alyssa thought for awhile reviewing her textbook. The only number calculation that would remain the same no matter which system was used would be the one that involved the calculation of the birthdate. So Alyssa raised her hand and hazarded a guess.

"Professor would it be the calculation of the Birth Day Number?" Alyssa said. "I mean both systems use the same method of calculating the birthdate and that never changes even when one grows older."

So Nigel had the calculations right, he just forgot to look up the definitions of 17 and 32. Well that is easy enough. He quickly looked up the definitions and thought they were pretty interesting. But the class was moving on now and he had to listen to the teacher see if he actually knew the answer to her question.

Which he obviously didn't but he was happy that he could at least do one activity in the class. He got paper and a quill out and got ready to write down notes and the answer to what one particular number calculation would be the same no matter which system is used.

The calculations of his surname...

Gideon took Professor Hadley's advice and looked down at his work for the part that she mentioned. And sure enough he had accidentally put down a four instead of a 5 that would equal the 'e' of Gert. He scratched it out and corrected it, switching the numbers around and adding up the new equation. His surname went from 10 to 11 giving him a master number for that name. Well if they were using the Pythagorean system. For the Chaldean it meerly moved up to the next compound number.

Trying to push it aside, the prefect went to work looking up the compound numbers of his other two names seeing as Professor Hadley had reminded him that they played a part in the meanings as well. Maybe there was some good there.

Okay so his first name offered some hope in his destiny. At least the strife could be seen in the past leading to a better future. However his middle name cut away any good feelings and Gideon was really hoping that none of his meanings came through. Especially the last one...no deaths in his life other then after a ripe old life thank you. With a sigh he pushed the parchment slightly away from him trying not to appear to disgruntled. Though the sixth year was distracted enough from thinking on Professor Hadley's final question.
