Default Arithmancy One: Introduction to Chaldean Numerology & Your Chaldean Expression Number

The windows in the Arithmancy classroom were cracked open slightly to allow some of the fresh Autumn air to infiltrate the room, even if it did have the effect of making it slightly chilly. Josephina was sitting perched in the chair behind the larger desk, seemingly lost in thought. However, when you enter, she will look up and give you a brief nod before resuming her transfixed expression.

On the board behind her, there's a few notes scrawled:

Glenn opened her journal and wrote out a few notes before she started on her calculations. You never know when you might need the notes. Besides, she had OWLs in two years... it seemed much closer than it had in her first year. In her first she didn't take any notes at all. She scrawled her name across the paper in navy ink. Thelma. Her grandmother's name. Her grandmother had been at her house the holidays - good thing all that extended family was gone now.

She changed to black ink and worked out her calculations. Hopefully she hadn't made any mistakes this time. Last year - well, she was famous for always making errors.

Meanings

It is a fortunate number of promise if it appears in any connection with future events.

FOURTEEN (14): This is a number of movement, combination of people and things, and danger from natural forces such as tempests, water, air or fire. This number is fortunate for dealings with money, speculation and changes in business, but there is always a strong element of risk and danger attached to it, but generally owing to the actions and fool hardiness of others. If this number comes out in calculations of future events the person should be warned to act with caution and prudence.

FIVE (5): Your mission in life is to adjust, evolve, and advance. Your purpose is to embrace opportunity and autonomy and to follow your curiosity whever it leads you, all while using your resources and charm to keep you moving. That sounded... light-hearted. The badger looked over her numbers again with a bemused expression on her face. Heh. Lovely future she had.

Ella didn't have any questions really so she took notes on what Kurumi had asked and how Professor Hadley explained the answer. And now it was time to work, yes? Pulling her sheet of blank parchment towards her, Ella got her quill and began writing out her name as it appeared on her birth certificate.

Nigel never really thought he wanted upheaval or destruction. And of course he wanted power but only in his dreams, not in real life. It was a cool definition though, Nigel thought.

Zack was all so thrilled to calculate his character number. He wanted to find out if it was the same as professor wouldn’t it be a great thing if his and professors character numbers matched? Wow! for some reason it was exciting for Zack.

Now that she had everything written down. She checked her work one more time, before leaning over to see how her other friends were doing with theirs.

"Hey Minnie, Ella, Oakey....what did you guys come up with? Here's what I found with my character name."Alyssa showed her work to the others.


As Alyssa continued to look at her calculations, she realized that she had made a mistake and had totally ignored the compound numbers 12 and 30 when doing her calculations, so she quickly looked through her textbook until she found what the number 30 represented and quickly wrote down the meaning adding that to her parchment.

Whoah. The Ravenclaw blinked and re-read the text. This sounded like a tall order. Could he ever live up to anything that it says? And he was destined for... broader horizons? Reach out and help someone? He was painfully shy, although he is making an effort to be more sociable, he would usually just do things alone where he was most comfortable. He shook his head. At this point he feels a bit intimidated by it all.



He straightened up as he looked out the open windows and had a thought. The Chaldean system actually uses the name that one most commonly goes by. He usually just goes by his nickname Vickers. Pulling out a fresh parchment, he started to recalculate using his nickname

It didn't seem too different from the same ole 'assign numbers to letters then add them together' method. Well, she thought to herself, with a soft sigh, may as well get started. Hadley the Points Hacker would be along soon if she didn't...

Okay... so now the math part, the one Nora didn't really enjoy. Looking over the Chaldean Number System, she started scribbling every letter of her name and each assigned number.

So...they had to write stuff down now? Penelope wasn't sure whether that was better or worse than practicing a new spell. At least she knew she could write and what-not, so maybe it was better. Didn't seem all that fun though.

She wasn't sure about using her middle name though. She knew it, she was sure she did, but she'd never thought about it much and it wasn't like anyone called her by that name, so she hadn't heard it very frequently nor was she certain on how to spell it. So she could just not use it, yeah? She was just going to assume because she didn't want to ask.

Last term she had done good in arithmancy, so this shouldnt be too hard. She looked over the Chaldean Numerology Chart she had writen down and started to calculate her first name.

Gulp. Well... maybe the next one would be better and balance out the badness of the first description? Fortunately, it was a good description. Although he wasn't sure if it exactly 'balanced out' the former one. It was dead on about carrying out one's own ideas and plans, because Paulie was ALWAYSSS coming up with new, albeit crazy, ideas and plots. He smiled a bit, and read up on his final number.

And... right off the bat, he was told it was an unfortunate number. So much for that. He read on, only to find out that it WAS horrible. Like... really horrible. Treachery, trials, tribulations? Unexpected dangers, unreliable friends, AND grief and deception caused by members of the opposite sex?!

Paulie paled. According to this, he was going to be lose Louisa and Adam as friends - on top of his other friends, too - Tori was going to cheat on him and their relationship would end, AND he was going to be backstabbed in the military, which would lead to his imminent DEATH.

Wow, this was bad. He took a deep breath. Okay, it's only Arithmancy class, right? Breeeaaathe.

Either way it was interesting.

But... but they all seemed to be looking at different numbers. Dale wracked his brains to remember what Hadley said, and simply couldn't...

Dale stopped, looked at his parchment and placed a finger beside each added number after each name. Did he need them all? Hadley only found one...

"I am so confused," Dale muttered, placing his hand up. He didn't want to admit how lost he was, because he was meant to know this stuff, surely, even though he had been homeschooled. Maybe Hadley would see he calculations, some of them scratched out and numbers all over the joint... or maybe he should just say so. "Like... what am I meant to do with these numbers? Is this wrong?"

Minerva sat at her seat. She looked around and saw everyone working hard. She turned back to her book feeling frustrated. She never struggled with school, not that it came easy but she always figured it out. Why did it seem this was not going to be the same. She pulled her parchment near and began to write the letters of her name.

The chart on her parchment when compared to what was being said didn't resemble each other in any way whatsoever. She knew she was awful at this, she knew it really well. Sierra peered back at the work she'd done so far. She knew she'd added everything up and come up with the sum of all her names, but now she just needed to interpret...well, all of it. So what was that she'd heard about double digit numbers? Was she supposed to interpret those, too? To be on the safe side, she just copied down the interpretations for the double digits she saw in her calculations.

So first of all, the number fourteen told her that she better watch out. She might be rich, but there'd be risks, as well. ...but the number twenty-five said she'd be alright after all. She'd come out stronger in the end. Number thirty-five directed her to number twenty-six, which said the future wasn't exactly great.

DEAR MERLIN! Was she going to be okay or not?! See, this was why she hated Arithmancy!

...but there were the single digits to keep in mind, too.

Keefer shook himself mentally. It felt like he had zoned out and missed the entire lesson up to this point. He stared at the board, noting Hadley's example. Those numbers don't all match up... he realized. We must be using the Chaldean system. This didn't bode well. Keefer was far less comfortable with it.

He pulled a piece of parchment towards him and scribbled down his name, then carefully wrote the values associated with each letter. This is so... wrong! He had most of the values memorized with the Pythagorean system, so some of these.. just weird.

He added a new section to his calculations for the final number. Let's see. Nine and six make fifteen, plus eight is 23, then those make five! He wrote 5 and underlined it. Flipping to chapter three, he consulted the table to find the meaning of his number. "Five: Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch," he read aloud quietly. Well, that was an interesting assessment.

And to think, he did it correct in his other names.

"Also, you should look at the compound numbers for each individual name, as well as the final one of your names combined." Mmhm.

At least for the most part, besides the number 13, all the interpretations in the book were kind of good. She couldn't quite say she understood exactly what the other meaning actually meant, and she found herself staring at it for a few more seconds than she'd expected. It was almost like she was in Divination, which she understood about as much as the interpretation part of this subject. Maybe it's the 'Death' thing, and the 'Wheel of Fortune' and the 'Sun', she thought. In any case she realy wasn't sure about those, so she moved on to the simple single number calculation she'd gotten at the end. The actual Character Number, as far as she was concerned. Everything else just confused her more, so she flipped back to the meaning for that.

Glancing around, Kurumi wondered if any of the younger students (PENELOPE?!) needed assistance.
Seeing the other Gryffindor prefect looking rather disappointed, Fina approached to have a look at her work as well. So basically he was curious about the world, resourceful and liked to keep moving. Well, that didn't sound too bad. He wasn't sure about the natural forces (c'mon, hurricanes were awesome!) or business bit (yawn), but he certainly liked to explore and not sit still. He wondered what Indy got...
Seeing the other, older Hutchinson's parchment only confirmed that what she calculated for their surname was correct and that Indy had mis-added. But she wasn't alone. While the male had added their surname correctly, his first name was off slightly. "Yes, the numbers do add up to 19 in your first name, but well, check that addition again in reducing." Cause like how he reduced to 2, she had NO idea.

"Laura. That's .... correct," she smiled, and placed a gold star on her parchment as well. "But well, there is ONE thing. With your interpretations, you should look at the compound numbers for the individual names, as well. So 13, 25, and 15." But other than that, she did good!

Josephina approached the desk of another of her Hufflepuff's next, just as she noticed her perusing her work - in thought and reflection more than likely. Looking it over, she nodded and placed a gold star on her work. "Very good!"

Okay! Well, after reading the first meaning, Paulie thought none of it applied to him very much until it cautioned him about the dangers of explosions, and then that part about wars, too. Dale stopped, looked at his parchment and placed a finger beside each added number after each name. Did he need them all? Hadley only found one...

"I am so confused," Dale muttered, placing his hand up. He didn't want to admit how lost he was, because he was meant to know this stuff, surely, even though he had been homeschooled. Maybe Hadley would see he calculations, some of them scratched out and numbers all over the joint... or maybe he should just say so. "Like... what am I meant to do with these numbers? Is this wrong?"

What. The. Heck.

Hearing another confused remark, Josephina looked at his parchment and nodded in approval. And added a gold star to his parchment too, cause of that NAME and his numbers were RIGHT too, even if he didn't know what to do next. "Your numbers are correct. Next you look at the meanings. So your final answer is two, so you look at the meanings for Character Numbers and that is the same as the meanings under the Pythagorean System."

"But also, with the Chaldean System, you should look at the compound - or double digits, associated with each individual name." She paused and pointed out the 13, 18, 26, and 53. "And those meanings can be found here."

Josephina nodded in approval, after moving on from Dale's desk toward another Hufflepuff - Minerva's. She smiled as she had self-corrected and placed a gold star on her parchment as well. "Nice job."

Okay. Now, Elise was getting seriously creeped out. What was with these numbers and her future? A healthy future nonetheless. Who knew, maybe Eddie'd send him to St. Mungo's. That'd be nice.

But she had to calculate that last number before she could do very much. So dipping her quill in the ink, she crossed the fingers on her right hand as she wrote.

This was just baffling. Going over her calculations again, Elise saw the numbers blur a little and double. Rubbing her eyes, she frowned. "I'm never going to get this right," she muttered. Maybe Professor Hadley'd come over and help?
Hearing more mutterings, Fina looked toward a Ravenclaw girl and strode over to have a look and nodded in approval. "But you did get it correct," she smiled and placed a gold star on her parchment. She even added meanings for the compound numbers too!

So first of all, the number fourteen told her that she better watch out. She might be rich, but there'd be risks, as well. ...but the number twenty-five said she'd be alright after all. She'd come out stronger in the end. Number thirty-five directed her to number twenty-six, which said the future wasn't exactly great.

DEAR MERLIN! Was she going to be okay or not?! See, this was why she hated Arithmancy!

...but there were the single digits to keep in mind, too.

He added a new section to his calculations for the final number. Let's see. Nine and six make fifteen, plus eight is 23, then those make five! He wrote 5 and underlined it. Flipping to chapter three, he consulted the table to find the meaning of his number. "Five: Change, transition, progressive thinking, resourceful, freedom, versatility, physical world, physical touch," he read aloud quietly. Well, that was an interesting assessment.
And last, but not least, for now anyway, Josephina made her way toward her Captain's desk and had a look at his calculations. And added a gold star to his parchment as well. "Good job, but one thing is to make sure you don't forget to look at the meanings of the individual compound numbers as well," she nodded. Aka the 27, 24, and 17. And the 23 as well, technically speaking.



Right then, as most of them had finished with their calculations, except for a few that had made a few careless errors, Josephina felt content that actually seemed to catch on rather easily to this method. "As those of you make those corrections I pointed out, I just have one last question. There is one particular number calculation that will be the same no matter which system is used. Any ideas which number calculation this is?"

Alyssa thought for awhile reviewing her textbook. The only number calculation that would remain the same no matter which system was used would be the one that involved the calculation of the birthdate. So Alyssa raised her hand and hazarded a guess.

"Professor would it be the calculation of the Birth Day Number?" Alyssa said. "I mean both systems use the same method of calculating the birthdate and that never changes even when one grows older."

So Nigel had the calculations right, he just forgot to look up the definitions of 17 and 32. Well that is easy enough. He quickly looked up the definitions and thought they were pretty interesting. But the class was moving on now and he had to listen to the teacher see if he actually knew the answer to her question.

Which he obviously didn't but he was happy that he could at least do one activity in the class. He got paper and a quill out and got ready to write down notes and the answer to what one particular number calculation would be the same no matter which system is used.

The calculations of his surname...

Gideon took Professor Hadley's advice and looked down at his work for the part that she mentioned. And sure enough he had accidentally put down a four instead of a 5 that would equal the 'e' of Gert. He scratched it out and corrected it, switching the numbers around and adding up the new equation. His surname went from 10 to 11 giving him a master number for that name. Well if they were using the Pythagorean system. For the Chaldean it meerly moved up to the next compound number.

It gives warning of some strange fatality awaiting one, also danger of accidents and defeat of one's plans. If it appears as a "compound" number relating to the future, it is a warning sign that should be carefully noted and plans made in advance in the endeavour to avert its fatalistic tendency.
Okay so his first name offered some hope in his destiny. At least the strife could be seen in the past leading to a better future. However his middle name cut away any good feelings and Gideon was really hoping that none of his meanings came through. Especially the last one...no deaths in his life other then after a ripe old life thank you. With a sigh he pushed the parchment slightly away from him trying not to appear to disgruntled. Though the sixth year was distracted enough from thinking on Professor Hadley's final question.
