Default Transfiguration Lesson II

The door to the classroom is wide open, ready for you to enter. All the desks are in their usual positions, in fact the only unusual thing is that Professor Magnus' desk is not covered in paperwork and folders.

No, today it has several buckets lined up, each containing freshly cut and neatly tied flowers that Professor Bentley had been so kind as to let the Transfiguration professor take from the greenhouses that morning. They are in four colours - Hogwarts house colours - of red, blue, green and yellow. Some have thorns, hence the request for gloves, but all are ready to be used later in the lesson.

If you are seated near the front, you would also probably see as you walk past, a cardboard box just positioned on the floor in front of the blackboard. Filled with tiny metal things.

Professor Magnus is in her usual place - perched on the edge of her desk ready to greet you, a smile on her face.

OOC: The lesson itself won't be starting until later tonight GMT, so please keep any chatting to a minimum. And it will be open for a few days so you guys don't need to worry about it going too fast, or not having time to participate much. I promise to spread my posts out enough to give you all time. ^___^

Oh, so good. They were going to be transfiguring thimbles to vases. That was a good idea. Wow! This term, transfiguration classes were becoming fun.

Ira listened and nodded as Professor Magnus explained the spell to them. She noted down it in her parchment. Then following others, Ira made her way to the front of the class to take some of those things Thimbles. There were so many in the box.

As instructed, Ira took a handful of them and returned to her seat. Some she kept aside on her desk and the rest, she put in her bag. Then she waited for the next instructions.

Silvia wrote down the incantation and its meaning in her notebook, then walked up to the front and grabbed a couple of thimbles from the box, already thinking about what she wanted her vase to look like. She returned to her seat and waited for further instructions.

Arts TRANSPONSTER!

Oh, cool! Vases! That should be a useful spell to Sophie back home! If only she could do magic outside the school...

She got up and went to the front of the room and collected a handful of thimbles. Before going back to her seat, though, Sophie turned to Professor Magnus. "Can we use this same spell on any object, Professor?"

"It is a thimble, correct. But we won't be turning the flowers into anything," Issy grinned at the Hufflepuff.

"A cup is very close actually. Something similar."

"It certainly does, but the origins of the spell lay in Latin, as is usual. And we won't be using the flowers yet, as I just said." Smiling at the Prefect, Issy moved on to the next answer.

Issy's eyed strayed onto one of the Slytherin prefects when she spoke. And then widened when her words sunk in.

Something other than snot?

What on earth was this child feeding her pets? It was --- "Umm, not quite, no. But thank you for the...input, Selena."

There certainly were some interesting answers coming forth today. Mini microphone top. Well it was knobbly, so she could see that. "I suppose it does look a bit like that, but a thimble it is."

Now that was a good idea for a game. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with spell work, so wasn't what they were going to be doing. Isabelle smiled at the suggestion though. "As fun as that sounds, we won't be doing that I'm afraid. And the thimble is going to be something FOR the flowers."

"Good guess, both of you, but no."

They all seemed to be distracted by the idea of the flowers. Maybe she should have hidden them until the time to use them. "Not turning anything into flowers today."

"You're right on the first part of the word, but the flowers are not actually part of the spell. Good guess though."

"In Spanish neo might mean new, but not in this case," Issy winked.

A wastebasket? "Well yes, I guess it does really," Isabelle said. "And you are quite close with that idea..."

Ohhh, ding! ding! They had a winner.

Isabelle beamed as she looked at the child. "You are exactly right! Well done!"

Flipping the thimble over in her hand, Isabelle turned her grin to the rest of the class. "Those of you who said this is a thimble are quite correct. But we won't be using it for sewing today - we'll be transfiguring vases for these flowers to go in later on," she gestured to coloured blooms in the buckets.

"The spell itself is formed from two Latin words..." Picking up the chalk, Issy decided to write it on the board herself rather than use magic. "Flora, meaning flowers, or plants. And Teneo, meaning 'to hold'."

"To hold flowers. A vase. Any kind that your imagination can come up with. And the flowers themselves will be for later, so you can all have some fun arranging them. Now, before I show you the wand movements, could you all come up and collect a handful of thimbles - you'll need some more for homework, so feel free to store them in your bags." Isabelle used her foot to shift the box to the front of the room. It was a little heavy, as there were hundreds of the things in there.

Justin listened as the professor explained what the thimbles were for. then stood up and went to get some of them from the box on her desk. Looking at them as he returned to his seat he nearly tripped over a first year. Then he sat down and kept a few on his work space and put the rest in a little pocket in his bag.

Sweet, she was almost correct for once. After writing down the definition and info, Kimalia got up to grab a fistful of those thimble, thingies.. they still looked like tiny wastebaskets to her, before putting them in her bag for later.

Make a vase out of a thimble? Vickers eyed the metal bucket the flowers sat in and the thimble on the Professor’s hand. Yeah he could see it, in fact other than the size they look practically the same. As the Ravenclaw stood to collect a small handful of thimbles, he lifted his other hand slightly and turned to the Professor “Professor Magnus, would this spell allow us to create more sophisticated vases, maybe of different shapes or material? The thimble looks very similar to the metal bucket there… I mean an engorgement charm can work too if all we need to make is a metal pot large enough for the flowers isn’t it?”

Violet stood up eagerly to collect the thimbles. This sounded like a good lesson. She was very artistic, so designing a vase would be brilliant and her sort of thing. Maybe it could be decorated with little flowers? Violet had loads of ideas. Flowers were pretty. Especially in Huffie colour. She took a handful and put them into her bag for when they were needed, before returning to her seat and focusing on the Professor.

Oh! So she had been wrong about her guess. But Amelia was still pleased because it meant that they wouldn't be getting rid of all those beautiful flowers in the room. She rather liked looking at them and smelling them. :33

As the Professor instructed to get a handful of thimbles, she went and collected as many as she could fit in her hands. There were a lot there and she wasn't hogging them all, she just wanted quite a lot of them so that she could practice and make pretty vases. Oh, she loved Transfiguration.

Heading back to her desk, she carefully set the thimbles down before reaching for her bag. She scooped most of them into her bag now, though she did leave some out on the desk for use in the lesson.

Thimbles. Thimbles. That was a funny word. He had no idea what you used them for in sewing since they clearly weren't needles, but since they didn't have to actually do any sewing today that was the least of his concerns. Shaking his head to rid him of his distracting thoughts, he stood up and grabbed a few from the front of the room. They were so odd looking. How could this POSSIBLY help anyone create a garment of any kind??

Thank goodness for magic. Seriously.

Annabelle did what the professor asked her to do. She went to the front of the class and took some thimbles and even some extras to practice on for homework. "This will be a cool spell to tell my mother about when i get home." she thought to herself and then stored the thimbles into her bag. She went back to her seat and awaited more instructions from the professor.

Lily copied down the professor's notes into her notebook. This was going to be similar to the paper into frame type of thing, though vases might not be as easy to personalize. Lily put down her quill as the professor asked them to come and get thimbles. Lily had never used them before for anything, she hadn't even seen them before... Walking up to the front of the room, Lily picked up 8 thimbles, to both use in class, for homework, and maybe to give to her mom back home. Once she had her thimbles, she walked back to her seat, and waited patiently to learn the spell.

Zhenya didn't think they would be doing sewing. Well, now that she knew they were turning them into vases it made much more sense.

She grabbed a huge handful of the thimbles and put them into a small compartment in her bag for homework. Maybe she could send one to her mother?

Instead of offering an answer to the question that had been posed to the class, Stella had merely stayed quiet, looking at the flowers. There wasn't much point in repeating everyone else, after all. Even if she had known the metal object was a thimble. At least she'd managed to stop playing with her ring, and her attention had gone back to Professor Magnus as the thimble discussion came to a close. So they weren't actually doing any Transfiguration with the flowers this lesson, just making vases for them. That was interesting, even if she couldn't help but agree with Vickers' comment about the thimbles seeming more like they'd just replicated the buckets the flowers were currently in. Although, she well knew that the point of Transfiguration was to make things look different. Not just larger.

They needed to collect some thimbles for the lesson, though, so she stood up and walked over to the box. There were still quite a few left in there, but she still only took a semi-large handful before carrying them back to her desk. "Will we need to find our own flowers for homework?," she asked, raising her hand after placing about half of her thimbles inside her school bag, and the rest on her desk. She could hear Oberon starting to play with them, but hopefully nobody else would notice. Even metal tigers liked to play, it seemed.

Selena smiled brightly at the professor, expecting her answer to be completely correct. "You're welcome Professor Magnus~" Selena chirped. Her answer was probably correct. It made the most sense. To her at least. But obviously the professor had other plans for this thing. Sighing, Selena slumped in her chair. There went feeding Kent something else. Kicking her legs back and forth in her seat she STARED at the metal thingy. Not really that pretty and apparently not a cup for a pygmy puff. Maybe it was a cup for a cru- nope. It was thimble.... used for sewing. Selena didn't sew. She didn't play with needles. Those things were dangerous.

Continuing to kick her legs back and forth, Selena wrote down the spell and it's use before standing up and skipping over to the box of metal thimbles. Who knew, maybe they could use it to feed a pygmy puff something other than snot. Selena picked up each metal thimble one by one, putting each one on her finger till she had a total of ten. Now she had fingers with metal HATS. Yup. She would be changing the metal finger hats into pretty vases now apparently so Selena waited for further instruction.

Vashti quickly scribbled down in her notes the spell's incantation, the two words and their meanings that formed it, and what the spell was supposed to do. As she did, she started thinking about what kind of vase she might create. It would change into any kind that she could imagine, eh? Hm...

Still thinking about her vase design, she got up and grabbed a handful of thimbles when the professor said they could. She set a few on her desk then placed the rest of them into a pocket inside her bag.

Taking notes of everything the professor was saying Hannah only looked up when she heard the professor say that they needed to get them several thimbles and homework....of course there would be homework. She silently got up and went to the front on the class. With a handful of thimbles she made her way back to her desk and waited for further instructions.

She walked up to front to class and picked a few thimbles and went and what back down. She waited for more instrutions.

"What's so important about these things anyway Professor?"
Isabelle had been stood to the side, to give the kids enough room to swarm to the front, but remain close enough in case they needed anything. And it seemed that a few did have questions.

"Important about what things, my dear? The thimbles? They're just the things you will be using the spell on today. They don't have any magical qualities on their own, if that's what you mean."

When the instructor asked the students to grab a handful of thimbles Ella stood slowly, knowing there would be a rush of students to the front. She waited until there was some room around the box and walked over, grabbing her handful. She returned to her seat wondering how many thimbles she should keep out and how many she should save for homework. She raised her hand to ask. "Professor, how many thimbles should we keep out for this activity?"
"I would say two should be enough, because we won't be putting any water in them until you're all sure you like your designs. And before that you can revert them back to keep trying," Isabelle grinned, eyeing the handful the girl had.

She got up and went to the front of the room and collected a handful of thimbles. Before going back to her seat, though, Sophie turned to Professor Magnus. "Can we use this same spell on any object, Professor?"
That was a good question.

"In theory yes. But it works best on anything that has the quality of a container - like the thimble, a cup, a bucket etcetera."

The thimble looks very similar to the metal bucket there… I mean an engorgement charm can work too if all we need to make is a metal pot large enough for the flowers isn’t it?”
The kids were full of good questions today, she liked it.

"You're quite right, a charm could be used to make them like the buckets. But it is the more complex, and different, styles and materials I want you all to aim for today. No plain metal pots." Although if that's what they got on their first try, she wasn't going to scold them for it.

"You will indeed, and Professor Bentley has given us permission to use Greenhouse Three for that. But I'll explain when I post your homework later." Isabelle gave the girl a nod and smile, before walking round to the front of her desk.

"Now you all have your thimbles, I'd like you to pay close attention to the wand movement I am about to show you." Rolling her sleeves up, Issy took her wand back out of it's holster and placed her thimble on the front of her desk so they could all see. Although it was more her wand they needed to be keeping an eye on. "You need to point your wand directly downwards, vertical, right near your object. Then do three clockwise circles, moving your wand further away, and upwards, from your thimble with each one, like so..."

Isabelle did just as she had told them, swirling her wand clockwise and inching it away with every circle, almost as if she was flourishing something from the end of it. "Floreneo!" Almost as if it was growing out of the thimble, a red vase spread upwards and stood, complete, when Issy finished moving her wand.

Beaming at them all, she pocketed her wand again and picked up the vase. It was made of rubber, but they didn't know that - so she bounced it on the ground to prove it had worked properly. It came rebounding back up towards her face, and she caught it just before it hit her nose. "There we go. Mine is rubberised, just to show you the sort of thing you can do. Now, those of you with questions, please ask - the rest of you can begin with practice."

OOC: I'm off to bed now. Isabelle will still be there, but I'll reply to questions tomorrow. You may chat with each other about the task, but nothing else please. Have fun!

Amelia watched very closely when the wand movement was demonstrated. Taking out her notebook, she started recording information. She wrote down the spell, its meaning, and what it did. Then she jotted down the wand movement so that she could have it on her when it came to using it later on.

When she was done, she placed her pen down and started practicing the incantation under her breath. "Floreneo ... Floreneo ... Floreneo..."

Ella nodded with a smile when the Professor answered her question. "Okay, thanks Professor." She left two of the thimbles sitting on her desk and placed the rest carefully in one of the pockets in her bag.

She watched with wide eyes as the Professor demonstrated what they were to do, looking away only to add things to her notes. When the Professor's vase was done, Ella nodded approvingly. Not that she needed Ella's approval or anything. It was quite a nice one and Ella hoped hers was nice too. When she threw it towards the floor Ella gasped. Why on earth would the professor ruin her perfectly good vase?! "Oh no!" she said, covering her mouth which was in a wide O shape. Ella was surprised and relieved to see that it hadn't smashed all over the floor and was in fact made of rubber. She couldn't stifle her giggled as she said, "Good one, Professor!" with a smile.

Ella didn't really have any questions so she decided it was time to practice. She pulled out her wand and placed it on her desk next to the thimbles. Then, she decided to practice saying the spell. "Alright...Flor-Flor-what was it again? Oh right, Floreneo!" When she had the word part down, Ella began to practice the wand motion without her wand. She pointed her hand down towards the thimble and practiced making the circular motion away from it. After a few tries without her wand, Ella decided to give it a go and try and change one of her thimbles.

Once he heard and watched the professor's instructions he jotted down notes. He wrote the spell, the meaning, and the wand movement down. Once that was done he began to practice the spell underneath his breath. "Floreneo. Floreneo. Floreneo. Floreneo." After he was sure he did it right he waited for further instructions.
