Default Transfiguration Lesson II

The door to the classroom is wide open, ready for you to enter. All the desks are in their usual positions, in fact the only unusual thing is that Professor Magnus' desk is not covered in paperwork and folders.

No, today it has several buckets lined up, each containing freshly cut and neatly tied flowers that Professor Bentley had been so kind as to let the Transfiguration professor take from the greenhouses that morning. They are in four colours - Hogwarts house colours - of red, blue, green and yellow. Some have thorns, hence the request for gloves, but all are ready to be used later in the lesson.

If you are seated near the front, you would also probably see as you walk past, a cardboard box just positioned on the floor in front of the blackboard. Filled with tiny metal things.

Professor Magnus is in her usual place - perched on the edge of her desk ready to greet you, a smile on her face.

OOC: The lesson itself won't be starting until later tonight GMT, so please keep any chatting to a minimum. And it will be open for a few days so you guys don't need to worry about it going too fast, or not having time to participate much. I promise to spread my posts out enough to give you all time. ^___^

Flicking her wand at the board, the chalk rose up and wrote one word: FLORENEO

Violet raised up her hand timidly. She had thought that she had seen the small metal object the professor was holding in her hand back at home with her grandma. "Is..that a thimble professor? Are we going to transfigure them into flowers? It would be rather nice to give to a special someone perhaps." She couldn't wait to get started with doing some more transfiguring. It was always a fun class to be in. As more students answered the professor's question, she learned a few things herself, like knowing that "flora" meant flower in Spanish which was very fascinating indeed that other people knew different languages.

Alyssa looked at the metal object and recognized it but as for the word, she was stumped. She repeated the word over and over again, before hazarding a guess. She raised her hand and said. "Professor, the metal object is a thimble. It's used to your fingertip from being pricked by a needle when you are sewing. As for the word Florean has it got something to do with flowers like the word Florists is for a person who arranges flowers?

So could it be that we're going to changing the flowers into thimbles or vice versa?
"

Floreneo? What was that? By its name, it obviously looked like something to do with flowers, or rather transfigure flowers into something else..

Then, Ira looked up as Professor Magnus showed them all an object. It was rather small, but Ira could see it fine. But Ira had no idea what it could be. She thought about it, imagining all sorts of weird things, but yet couldn't come to an answer. So she thought better, and sat quietly.

Then she got an idea. She had seen it somewhere. It had been on her mother's finger while sewing! But why? Maybe to avoid getting pricked by the needle? Maybe.. But since many others had already answered, Ira figured to just listen to others and take down notes.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Jezzabelle stared at the object that the professor held and didn't really know what it was. Floreneo. "Well Flor is flower in Spanish," she said raising her hand, "and neo means new so maybe we could be making a new flower?"

Tayla furrowed her eyebrows, wondering what was going on with Kurumi. She'd been acting a little strangely lately and wished she could talk to her. Taking her eyes off the Gryffindor prefect, Tayla focused on the little thing Professor Magnus had in her hand. "That's a thimble, Professor," she replied, knowing what it was since she was half Muggle and had spent her childhood in the Muggle world. "And erm..." Tayla's eyes moved from the thimble to the word on the board to the bucket and the flowers and back. "We'll be turning that thimble into a bucket full of flowers," Tayla said rather unsurely, but it was the first idea that popped into her head.

"Perhaps we are going to turn the round thing into a vace for flowers?"

~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.

Jory recognised the object instantly, after all his mom used it alot. Raising his hand he said "It's a thimble, Professor and we're going to use it to,uh... turn it into a set of flowers or a single flower?'' The boy honestly had no idea what they were going to do with a thimble.

Hmm. Glenn didn't know what that thing was called. She let her gaze wander to the flowers and looked at them a for a couple of minutes as everyone answered, thinking over what they could be doing with them today.

She supposed they could be turning the... thimble, or whatever the others were calling it into something. Probably flowers. But the others had already said that. Glenn fiddled straightening her skirt while everyone continued answering, smoothing the pleats that the house elves had ironed in.

Zhenya had seen one of those before. She raised her hand and said "Professor, that is a thimble and my grandmother uses it when she sews so that she doesn't prick her finger, it just sits on the top of any finger. Would we be using it to sew something?" she asked.

No - wait... this is transfiguration, surely they wouldn't be using it for that. But she didn't have any other thoughts.

Oh no. Dae sucked at guessing games. She stared at the small object on the professor's hand, knowing she had seen the object before but not really sure where. It was metallic, and looked like a really small cup. Her brows furrowed as she tried to remember what the thing was actually called.

"Well, professor, err," she said, weakly. "It's a..." how she wished she hadn't opened her mouth to begin with. "I..." she stammered again, then went red. Hoping that the voices of her classmates drowned hers, she settled back on her chair. Now planning to go finish the lesson in silence.

Sophie stared at the small object. "It's a... sewing thingy." Whatever that was called. Thimble, it seemed, as the others were saying. It looked like a tiny little bucket in Sophie's opinion! "We'll be turning these small thingies into big buckets of flowers?" That would be cool!

Kimalia who sat nearby smirked at Selena's response, she wasn't sure if it was right or not but the idea of it was interesting. Now then.. that still confused her on what to think of when she saw that.. object. Might as well give her input, raising her hand."Well, it looks like a wastebasket, except really really really small." Were they going to have to use an enlargement spell on it later? Hmm. "Will we be transforming the size and shape of it?"

What was he doing here? Well... this was Transfiguration, wasn't it? He was like.. sort of supposed to be here. Unless he was in a completely different room somehow.
He frowned in confusion. 'I'm here for class...?' He said and back back in his seat before yawning loudly. 'I always behave myself.'

Aaron stared at the board as the magic chalk wrote some word on the board. Floreneo. Floreneo. Aaron said the word a few times over, but every time he said it it just sounded weird. He shrugged and listened to what she was explaining now, he'd better pay attention, it wasn't as if he was a very good student to begin with.
Ah. It was a spell. Made sense. Magic school and all that..

He frowned as he stared at the object they were trying to figure out. How was he supposed to know what it was? 'Is it one of them sewing things?' He asked, it looked like those finger protector whatyacallem. 'Against the ouchie needle and what not, you know..'
He shrugged, probably not. But it was a try, right? So.... if he was right, they'd be sewing? Doubtful.

"Professor," she started after raising her hand. "It's the thing that they use to protect the finger from getting poked by the needle in sewing, right? Umm, it's called the Thimble." She had seen her aunty use it several times over the summer, but she rather not wear it since it's kind of hard and her fingers aren't big enough to fit in the thing.

Nate raised his hand and said "Professor isn't that what the muggles use to stick pins into. And are we going to be turning something metal into flowers." Nate had to think about that one.

Harvey watched as the professor waved her wand and a word came up onto the board .. he just stared at it.. Flor... Flor.. Flor-e.. Flor-e-neo... Floreneo... Floreneo.. he said to himself a coupls of times and then the professor told them that it was a spell.. so it required that little thing and the flower later on?.. just then the professor asked them a question and two.. Harvey slowly put up his hand "Thats a thimble professor.. a type of finger protection. Could we be turning them into those flowers or something?" he answered the questions as best as he could..

Elise stared at the board for a moment. Flora-WHAT?! Whatever it was, Elise was preeeee~ty sure it had something to do with flowers. Cause flowers were related to Flora... or something like that...

Raising her hand, she grinned. She knew what that was! "It's a tthim... Thim-something..." she grinned. Wait, what was it called? A thim... BLE!

"Right, it's a thimble!"
she nodded vigorously. THIMBLE. Remember, Ellie!

Spanish? Hmm. Isabelle looked at the board and read the spell to herself. Well yes, she could see how that conclusion could have been come to. "Actually it's an amalgamation of two Latin words, and flowers are not part of the spell. Good guess though."

"It is a thimble, correct. But we won't be turning the flowers into anything," Issy grinned at the Hufflepuff.

And figure out what the pygmy puff would eat out of the metally thingy. As for the spell? Flowers? Maybe they would be feeding pygmy puff flowers.
Issy's eyed strayed onto one of the Slytherin prefects when she spoke. And then widened when her words sunk in.

Something other than snot?

What on earth was this child feeding her pets? It was --- "Umm, not quite, no. But thank you for the...input, Selena."

There certainly were some interesting answers coming forth today. Mini microphone top. Well it was knobbly, so she could see that. "I suppose it does look a bit like that, but a thimble it is."

She raised her hand to answer "Proffesor, that is a thimble, commonly used for sewing." But what could they use it for? "Are we transfiguring the thimble into... a blue thimble-flower?" She asked. Because they did exist. "Or are we having a competition between the houses to see who can water the flowers - or fill the bucket - with water, using a thimble?" She guessed, noticing that the flowers were all in house colours. But... what did that have to do with Transfiguration? If anything, that activity belonged in Herbology.
Now that was a good idea for a game. Unfortunately, it had nothing to do with spell work, so wasn't what they were going to be doing. Isabelle smiled at the suggestion though. "As fun as that sounds, we won't be doing that I'm afraid. And the thimble is going to be something FOR the flowers."

It was always a fun class to be in. As more students answered the professor's question, she learned a few things herself, like knowing that "flora" meant flower in Spanish which was very fascinating indeed that other people knew different languages.
They all seemed to be distracted by the idea of the flowers. Maybe she should have hidden them until the time to use them. "Not turning anything into flowers today."

As for the word Florean has it got something to do with flowers like the word Florists is for a person who arranges flowers?

So could it be that we're going to changing the flowers into thimbles or vice versa?
"
"You're right on the first part of the word, but the flowers are not actually part of the spell. Good guess though."

"In Spanish neo might mean new, but not in this case," Issy winked.

"Will we be transforming the size and shape of it?"
A wastebasket? "Well yes, I guess it does really," Isabelle said. "And you are quite close with that idea..."

Isabelle beamed as she looked at the child. "You are exactly right! Well done!"

Flipping the thimble over in her hand, Isabelle turned her grin to the rest of the class. "Those of you who said this is a thimble are quite correct. But we won't be using it for sewing today - we'll be transfiguring vases for these flowers to go in later on," she gestured to coloured blooms in the buckets.

"The spell itself is formed from two Latin words..." Picking up the chalk, Issy decided to write it on the board herself rather than use magic. "Flora, meaning flowers, or plants. And Teneo, meaning 'to hold'."

Isabelle used her foot to shift the box to the front of the room. It was a little heavy, as there were hundreds of the things in there.

The Idea Man Kori-Kins

Laura did what the Professor asked and then stored a few in her bag since the Professor had said she would need them for homework, why was Professor always giving out homework, it wasn't fair, seriously didn't they do enough at school without having to do extra, well she wasn't going to say anything about it but she did raise her hand and ask the Professor. "What's so important about these things anyway Professor?"

"It is a thimble, correct. But we won't be turning the flowers into anything," Issy grinned at the Hufflepuff.

"A cup is very close actually. Something similar."

"It certainly does, but the origins of the spell lay in Latin, as is usual. And we won't be using the flowers yet, as I just said." Smiling at the Prefect, Issy moved on to the next answer.

Ella listened to the Professor as she spoke, smiling because she had correctly identified the object as a thimble. She began copying the notes off the board, excited to do some flower arranging when all was said and done. Her mother would seriously appreciate the skills she was learning as she was an avid gardener and Ella seemed to be working with plants and flowers quite a lot these days.

When the instructor asked the students to grab a handful of thimbles Ella stood slowly, knowing there would be a rush of students to the front. She waited until there was some room around the box and walked over, grabbing her handful. She returned to her seat wondering how many thimbles she should keep out and how many she should save for homework. She raised her hand to ask. "Professor, how many thimbles should we keep out for this activity?"

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Jezzabelle quickly made a note of the actual meaning of the word on a piece of parchment and moved to grab some...thimbles? Odd shaped things thimbles. She grabbed four and moved back to her seat. They did kind of look like cups. She sat back down and waited for further instructions.

Alyssa quickly jotted down what the Professor said and what they would be doing for lesson today before getting up and retrieved a handful of thimbles from the box that contained them. She then returned to her desk, sat down and waited for further instructions.

Quickly scribbling what the Professor said on a piece of parchment, Ari thought it had been best in the end that she hadn't answered the previous question, because, as it turns out, her guess was wrong. The girl had thought they were going to transfigure the thimble into a flower without thorns, because that's what the object did, protected one from prickling their fingers. But it seemed this wasn't a matter of logic. Ariadne left her seat and went to the front of the class to get some thimbles, as instructed.

Oh. So it was called a thimble. Suddenly, Adanna was grateful she hadn't called it what she had thought it was called - a thumble. Surely she'd have some knowledge of this item, being half-blood and all.
Suppressing a laugh, she stood to collect her handful. She dug around in the box a little, then came up with as many as one had could carry. She then walked back to her desk, counting the little metal things as she went.
Six. It didn't seem like a lot, but she could always ask for more if she ran out, right?

Of course. Thimbles. How could she have forgotten? Her father had once used them when she showed him her torn dress as a child. Sighing, she stood up and walked to the box. The small objects really did look like tiny waste baskets. Bending down, she counted three pieces and held them tightly in her hand. She started walking away, bowing her head so to not have eye contact with anyone.

Then she remembered how lousy she could sometimes be with casting spells. Blushing a bit, Dae headed back to the box and picked two more pieces before finally returning to her chair.
