Default Transfiguration Lesson I

The door is ajar, just waiting for you to open it and enter the classroom. When you do you notice that nothing is out of the ordinary. All the desks are lined up in the usual manner, each with a single piece of large paper resting on top, Professor Magnus' desk is still at the far end of the room, and the blackboard is to the side.

There is a message on the blackboard, however.

OOC: I'm opening a little earlier to allow people time to enter. The actual lesson won't start for another couple of hours or so. Please have your character enter, but DON'T chat excessively or points will be taken. ;P

Class has started - Please do not announce your late arrival.

HELPFUL LINKS:
[*] First question
[*] Practice instructions - new spell and wand movement
[*] Second question
[*] Come up to the front, kiddies. Professor Magnus wants you to see something....
[*] Second demonstration

Louisa was nodding at the second version of her explanation about the framing cool spell. She really loved it, did she say this? Yeah, she did! With a very light and sweet Louisa smile, the girl went back to her desk.

Settling back down, the fifteen years old grabbed her bag off the floor and took out her picture. It was a simple picture of herself this summer in Brazil, leaning against her boyfriend's red car. She would've brought a family picture, one from when she was an ickle little unwitch girl but that'd trigger a series of memories she was doing very well without them.

With a quiet sigh, Louisa brought closer the paper, she smoothed it with both of her hands making sure it was flat on the table without any tiny obstacle that might corrupt her photo. Not that it'd be a disaster, she had an album full of photos from the Brazil vacation and she was sure that Joao had a copy of it. The girl placed the picture over the paper and made sure to position it right in the middle, just like Professor Magnus did.

With some squinting of the eyes, moving backward and forward in her seat to make sure that the photo was in the required place, Louisa Carter was ready to frame. Pointing her wand at one corner of the paper, she started moving it along the square around, "Statua Habitum."

The paper started stretching a bit and its edges were flipping over and fading to another color of grey... no, silver. For a moment, it was as if the paper came to life and started taking a proper shape. The girl's eyes were wide open in amazement at the transfiguring paper, and when it settled down and stopped forming a beautiful classic silver frame for her picture, Louisa held the framed photo in her hands and stared at it with a big winning grin. Now this was magic!

Alex took her seat and retrieved her picture from her bag. She smoothed the picture and placed it on top of the piece of paper. "I can do this", Alex told herself. She took a deep breath and focused as hard as she could on the frame she wanted to appear. She traced a square and stated, "Statua Habitum" with as much authority as she cold muster. The beautiful gold frame appeared, just as she had visualized it. "I did it. I can't believe it", Alex said excitedly.

Ellie saw the results of Professor Magnus' picture frame and Ellie was eager to try it herself. Accepting her photo back, Ellie smiled. "No problem, Professor." Although it would have been cool if she could have kept it in the frame so Ellie was exempt from the assignment, but... no such luck.

Once she got back to her desk, Ellie set the photo in the middle of a piece of paper. Deeep breath. Tracing her wand around the edges of her photo, Ellie concentrated on a simple black frame. "Statua Habitum," she cast confidently.

Suddenly, the paper wrapped itself around her photo and formed into a sleek, classy, black frame. Ellie gasped a little bit and giggled. And then she coughed. Because that was weird to giggle to yourself.

But she did it!

And it was time to actually cast the spell themselves. These were the times that Amelia enjoyed the most in class. Theory she didn't too much care for, but practical times she loved.

Opening up her bag Amelia retrieved her picture. It was one that she'd wanted to have framed for awhile now but hadn't got around too. Mainly because she hadn't been able to decide if she wanted to have it in a scrapbook as well. But now was the perfect time to place it in a frame.

Amelia carefully laid the photo in the middle of the paper, making sure it was all straight before thinking about what kind of frame she wanted to put the photo in. Once she had it stuck in her mind she picked her wand up from her desk and began to trace around the picture while saying the incantation, "Statua Habitum,".

When she was finished a simple silver frame with some gold twists had appeared around the photo. It was beautiful and for some reason the fact that she'd been able to produce the frame without damaging her photo made her proud. She'd send this to her parents once the lesson was done if they were allowed to keep the frames.

Silvia returned to her desk and pulled out a photo of her, her brother, and the family owl. She placed it on top of the paper and ran her hands over both to make sure they were perfectly flat. She wasn't worried about damaging the photo, her mother always made sure to make a few copies of most of their photos. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, imagining the frame she wanted to transfigure. Opening her eyes she said "Statua Habitum!" and traced a square on the paper.

It worked! Well, sort of. The frame was a bit lopsided, and there was no glass or clear plastic over the photo to protect it. Come on, Silvia thought. I did this once already, I can definitely do it again. "Reverto," she said, then took another deep breath. Concentrate. "Statua Habitum," and she traced a square. The paper turned a dark brown and grew thicker. The edges folded in and a thin layer of glass appeared and slid into place. She did it! She was delighted that she was doing so well in her first week of classes.

EEEEEP! That was pretty a awesome spell was it not? She didn't even need to buy a picture frame for the pictures. A single piece of paper would do. And yup, that was worth saying something.

When Professor Magnus commanded that they return to their seats, Beezus nodded and turned around and joined the other students as they reverted back to their desks. Once she was settled comfortably, she took out her wand once more and looked at the frame resting on her desk. She would need to turn it back into its original form before she could use the Statua Habitum spell the way Professor Magnus had showed them.

She rested both her arms on the desk, pointed her wand on the sequined frame and "Reverto." she uttered. Almost instantly, the frame contorted and returned back to the piece of paper.

Now, unto the real task.

Beezus carefully took out the picture that she brought with her. It was taken during the summer, her best friend went to her place and the two of them took a quick pose at near the kitchen sink. She chuckled at it, the kitchen sink was really behind them. Good thing they were done with the dishes that time or else the dishes would've made an appearance in that picture. With a smile, the young eaglet settled the piece of paper on her desk then she placed the picture on top of it. Afterwards, she smoothed both it make it lay flat on the surface.

"Stat-UA HAB-itum!" she uttered as she pointed her wand on the paper and picture upon making it draw a square-like shape in thin air. Nothing happened then and there and it caused her to panic a bit. What did she do wrong for the spell not to work properly? Beezus was about to repeat the spell again when the piece of paper made a frizzling sound. When she looked at it, it was crumpling itself along with the picture. "No, no, no.." She groaned, it wasn't supposed to do that. Perplexed, she covered her face with her hands.

HER PICTURE!!

But then..the crumpling suddenly stopped and when she looked back at it, she found an ornate silver-ish picture frame and her precious photo was already inside it.

She felt like crying but she stopped herself. Instead, she grinned and looked at the Transfiguration Professor. "Professor, I think I'm done." she said.

After one failed attempted, Eino was determined to transform the piece of paper into exact frame he wanted. His problem was in his concentration; everything else he had performed flawlessly, at least according to his standards. All that was left was for him to clearly envision the exact frame he wanted. He cleared his throat and shuffled a bit in his seat until he felt comfortable. He raised his hand and left it suspended in the air while holding his wand for a few seconds. Meanwhile, he closed his eyes and pictured a black wooden frame. Opening his eyes he began to trace a square above the piece of paper while uttering the same incantation. "Statua Habitum." The paper began to jumble about on top of the table, distorting itself, then finally settling while transforming. When it finally stopped moving it had turned into a beautiful frame. It wasn't necessarily what he had envisioned, but it was close. The corners, they weren't as pointy, and it wasn't black enough. He left out a sigh in disappointment and reverted the frame back to a piece of paper before trying again.

After that DISASTROUS first attempt at trying the spell, Alex had retrieved another piece of paper and placed it on the desk in front of him, placing the photo in the middle and preparing to tackle this spell again. Right, focus on the FRAME, Alex, not the photo...

Moving his wand in a square motion, he muttered "Statua Habitum," as he had before, envisioning a lovely metal frame encasing the picture, unlike the bulky rock half-frame he'd gotten before. Blegh. As he finished moving his wand, he smiled in delight to see that the spell had worked! The paper twisted and turned and managed to create a swirly, silvery metal frame around the picture. Awww, how lovely. This would be a great gift for someone for Christmas! You didn't even have to spend a dime, you could just tear a piece of paper out of a notebook!

two sides of the same coin

Desiree had watched in awe at the Professor's demonstrations, not feeling all that confident that she could actually accomplish that herself. She went back to her desk and placed the picture on top of a piece of paper. She decided that there was no point in practicing, what if she did an amazing job and then tried to do it on the real one and it didn't work?

Focusing on a specific frame in her head, a little different than the last one, she traced her wand around the paper, "Statua Habitum" she said, the frame started to form, yes it was working! But then it started to fade away slowly, but surely falling back into a paper. Sigh.

Not giving up she tried again, "Statua Habitum" she said as forcefully as her rather soft voice could manage. Immidiately the paper began to transform into a forest green frame wrapping around the edges of the photo, rather intricate leaf carvings forming on it, the edges of which seemed to be brushed with gold. She smiled at her work. She hadn't expected it to be quite so spot on.. The exact frame she had pictured. She then looked to the photo, her favorite of her and liliana, her sister, at her 18th birthday party. She smiled again at the memory.

Running her hand over the frame, she thought of what an amazing spell this was. She was never buying a frame again. Nuh-uh. In fact the second year would probably have a stack of frames in her dorm by the end of the term, from all the practicing she was going to be doing. It made her wonder what else you could make out of a simple piece of paper..

The third attempt would be a charm. Hopefully. Eino had grown tired of repeating the same mistake. He knew exactly what he wanted in his frame, and what he wanted it to look like, but he could not produce a whole image of it. He knew the color he wanted it to be, the details it wanted it to have and all that. Still, every time he tried to picture it he had another sudden though and the spell fizzled. Frustrated, Eino shook his arms a bit and cracked his knuckles, a habit he did not wish to adopt. He closed his eyes and concentrated on the exact image of what he wanted his frame to be like. It took several seconds, and those seconds turned into minutes, but something he had something. It would make be easier if he could draw it but that would ruin the purpose of it, right?

Eino focused on the image he had in his head and slowly spoke the incantation as he traced a square above the paper. "Statua Habitum." The paper began to behave in the same way it previously had, but the result was different. It was, in fact, the frame Eino pictured. Success! The only problem was that he didn't like it once he held it up against the picture. No, that would not do. "Reverto!" He said, ready to try it again.

If that's what the child meant. Considering a few of the weird things they'd managed to do earlier, it might not have been.

"Although if any of you are unsure about using your own photo's to start with, you can take an extra piece of paper and fold it up to mimic a picture. Then when you are more confident, switch over to the one you bought with you." Tapping the frame gently to reverse the process, Isabelle picked up the photo and handed it back to Ellie. "Thank you for that," she smiled.

Stowing her wand again, she put the piece of paper that was once the frame onto a pile, ready for if they didn't yet trust themselves with their own pictures. "Now, make sure the paper is flat on your desk, and that the photo is placed directly in the middle of it - or the folded paper, depending on which you use first. Done correctly, the large paper will enclose the photo in the position you want it."

Now, it was getting awfully crowded around her desk.

"You may all return to your seats and give it a go! Remember what I've told you, and please do put your hand up if you need my help with anything."

OOC: Just to clarify: It's the PAPER that expands and turns into the frame, not the photo. You just place that on top of the paper so it ends up in the frame. Have fun!

Vickers returned to his seat then bent down for his bag. Taking the frame out of his bag again, he looked at it for a moment before sliding off the backing and taking his mother's photo out.

He lay the photo aside and took another parchment, folding it up to the size of his mother's photo and setting it at the center of the paper he was trying to transfigure. He traced the square wand stroke again "Statua Habiutum" he uttered with a bit more confidence, and the paper transfigured just as it had before.... but this time it looked a lot more solid than a paper frame. Heck it almost looked like wood.

He cast the Reverto spell to start over. This time he concentrated on the quality of how the frame would come out and form around the blank piece of paper, almost seeing it in his mind's eye. He traced the paper again and cast "Statua Habitum!". This time the paper formed smoothly into a wooden frame with a silvery finish. Looks like he's got it!

He cast Reverto once again then set the folded parchment aside. In its place he set his mother's photograph. Ohh boy here we go....

He traced the paper again and confidently uttered "Statua Habitum!" The paper transfigured back to the silvery wooden frame just as it did before, this time encasing his mother photo securely. Vickers peered closely at his work, trying to see if there was any damage to the photo within. It looked as pristine as when he took it from his own frame. He leaned back into his seat breathing a little easier, then finally smiled.

Sleek black frames were just... not for Eino, no matter how well it went with his photo. He was right all along, he had to just think about whatever, open his mind and let the frame create itself! Much more relaxed this time, Eino traced the same square he had traced for the past three times. "Statua Habitum." He recited and the piece of paper flew into the air! Eino followed it with his eyes, but not fast enough, and by the time he looked up, the paper had come back down. Eino fixed his black eyes on the disoriented paper as it distorted itself and then began to reshape into a frame. This frame was... nothing like Eino could ever imagine, but it was exactly what Eino would imagine. It had colors, so many of them! Blues, yellows, greens, pinks, oranges, purples, reds of all shades! Shapes like circles, squares, triangles, and swirls! There were even dragons! Yes, little colorful dragons all around the frame, one on each corner, as though they were holding the picture. Well, three of them looked like they were holding the picture but the one on the lower left side was breathing fire on it! It was the best frame ever. Eino's eyes sparkled as his mouth hung open for several minutes. He couldn't take his eyes off of the frame. Too bad it wasn't the one with the picture in it, but Eino didn't mind. He knew that if he did exactly the same thing he would get a completely different frame, but similar. He put the dragons frame aside, and was finally ready to frame his photo now!

Nodding as the demonstration ended, Kurumi stayed behind for a bit simply to examine the professor's spellwork, trying to remember just how everything had looked as the spell had been cast so that that she could try to envision it herself and not melt her paper on the first try again.

Once she felt that she had spent enough time doing this, Kurumi began to make her way towards her desk when she noticed a first year Puff having a bit of trouble.

Kurumi offered the girl another encouraging smile and then moved a few more desks down to her desk. Removing her wand from its holster again, Kurumi pointed it at her glass frame. "Reverto." Within a few moments, the frame was back to being a plain white piece of paper. Smoothing it out a bit with the palm of her hand, Kurumi set the photo of Jonathan and her on top of it and took a few deep breaths.

Visualize...visualize not melting the paper but making a frame...

Laura looked at the older girl and smiled. "I'm a bit scared of ruining the paper." Laura sighed seriously the paper must have some sort of feeling, no matter if the paper didn't talk. "Okay thanks for the information."

"Reverto." "Reverto." "Reverto." Laura said as she pointed at the paper she did what the older girl told her, she had no idea if to believe the girl or not but she decided too, but instead of the spell doing what it was supposted to Laura was shocked when the paper started to turn into wood. "is this suppost to happen?"

Nodding at the instructions given and the procedure described by the professor, Ira then returned to her seat. Then she wondered whether to first try it with her own photograph or practice it on a rough paper. She decided on the latter. It would be better to first do it on a rough paper than risk destroying her photograph. But she could use the reverse spell, right? Still, she went for the rough paper first.

She took out a sheet from her bag and folded it up to nearly her photograph's size. The she kept it above a larger sheet which would later turn into a frame.

Then she recalled the professor's instructions.. She first put the paper flat out against the desk. Then taking her wand, she pointed it at the paper and focused on the simple frame she wanted.

She gently touched the paper with the tip of her wand and traced a square around it and muttered, "Statua Habitum" clearly.

And yes, a frame appeared, actually a much simpler frame than she had actually imagined!

But at least her spell was successful. So now she would try it with her photograph. But before that, she reversed her spell, "Reverto" she muttered with her wand pointed at the paper frame. And there, her frame again reverted back to the original frame!

Laura said as she pointed at the paper she did what the older girl told her, she had no idea if to believe the girl or not but she decided too, but instead of the spell doing what it was supposted to Laura was shocked when the paper started to turn into wood. "is this suppost to happen?"
Thankfully, her seat wasn't too far away from the younger Puff, so she was able to lean over her desk to watch as the girl performed Reverto. Um...that was going a little too far in reverse. Um... "How about you try this..." Kurumi said, chewing on her bottom lip slightly. "Close your eyes and think about the paper, the blank white paper, and concentrate on that image for a while and then perform the spell." Kurumi wished that now she hadn't already cast Reverto on her glass frame so she could demonstrate.

Kurumi looked back at her white piece of paper and the picture on top of it. Quickly, she trace a square over them. "Statua Habitum," she said, and soon the white paper puffed up and framed her picture with a simple black plastic frame. She would try for something a little more complicated and intricate one next. "Here, watch me," she offered, holding her wand above the frame. She closed her eyes to get a clear image of the white paper in her mind, and then performed the wand moment. "Reverto." The frame uncurled around the picture and turned back into a white piece of paper. "Remember, concentrate."

Laura looked at Kurumi. ""Reverto." "Reverto." "Reverto." Laura tried to concentrate on turning the wood back into paper but it didn't work she turned it even further back it turned into a branch from a tree, she decided to stop saying Reverto before she had a tree in the classroom, she was sure the Professor wouldn't like that.

"EH I'll never get the hang of this." Laura whispered to the older girl. "I'm useless at Transfiguration." Laura had just decided that but well you could see she wasn't very good if she continued using Reverto she'd have a tree. "Maybe I should use Reverto again?" Yeah maybe it would be fun to have a tree in class. "What do you think?" Laura looked at the branch that went across hers and Kurumi's desk.

Laura was excited to do this!! She drew a square on the photo of her and her sister, which was kept on the paper and said 'Statua Habitum.'

She gaped as the paper folded to form a beautiful, purple frame

Confident enough that she could transfigure a frame around her photograph, Ira decided to use her photograph. She took a whitew sheet of paper slightly larger than her photograph, and placed it flat out on the desk. Then she placed the photo on top of it.

She closed her eyes and concentrated on the type and design of the frame she wanted. She took her wand and drew a square around the photograph and muttered, "Statua Habitum" slowly but clearly. And then she opened her eyes to see what changes were taking place.

Her paper was slowly changing into a square frame around her photograph. The, it was exactly as she had wanted. Wow! She admired the frame she had just transfigured.

This was so exciting!

While the Hufflepuff tended to her own transfiguration spells, Kurumi returned her attention to her own paper and photograph. She twirled her wand between her fingers as she looked at the picture, trying to think of a frame from home or her grandmother's that she could focus on when she cast the spell again. Having her mind mostly blank had earned her a simple black plastic frame. When she had an image of a frame that was on one of the windowpanes in her parent's bedroom, Kurumi ceased her twirling and traced a square over the two flat surfaces. "Statua Habitum!" The white paper puffed out again and crept around her photograph slowly. Its color turned golden and a somewhat intricate design appeared. In a few more moments, the transformation was complete and Kurumi held up her now framed photo, a slight blush appearing on her cheeks.

HOW had this girl managed to turn Reverto into a tree growing spell? Kurumi could do nothing but blink in disbelief at the branch that had grown across the tables. This was...sort of beyond her comprehension. "I think...you may want to hold off on casting that again," she said, shaking her head slightly. Maybe it was her spellwork, or maybe there had been something weird about her paper. "It might poke someone's eye out if it gets any bigger." Just to be safe, this was something that they should leave to the skilled hands of the professor. Kurumi looked up in Professor Magnus' direction and gave the woman a pleading look.

A frame spell. Selina was still completely and utterly enthralled by this spell. It just seemed so brilliant. wjg would her parents ever want to waste money on frames when they could just simply grow them. Stepping away from the demonstration she walked back to her desk. With her picture in her hand she smiled at the memory. She and Kurumi had been jumping up and down on Selina's bed hitting each other with pillows with feathers flying everywhere. It was one of their crazier and more wonderful moments.

When she reached her seat she drew out her wand and concentrated. She did not want to blow up her picture or make it melt. She closed her eyes, took a deep breath and said, "Statua Habitum.". The redhead waited for a moment for something to happen. Nothing did. She sighed and was about to try again when something started to sprout on her picture. It was working!!! No wait.... Nevermind.

I can do this…, Gwen told herself and placed the paper on the desk and then the picture above it. Right—now- where did I put my wand?, the Ravenclaw asked herself and felt her eyes going wiiide. I lost my wand! Nooo! I can’t believe it!, the third year told herself and started looking for it. Oh, here it is…, she realized, noticing it was just near the photo. Hmph. Stupid reactions.

*ehem-hem*

‘Statua Habitum!’, the girl said loud and clear and watched as a beautiful blue picture frame came out. YES! I did it!, she felt the need to congratulate herself.

Have fun!

Well, now that she'd mastered what they'd done in the beginning of the lesson, this next part shouldn't be too hard. Shouldn't, but she'd just have to see when she actually did the spell. Back at her desk with all the necessary materials, Sierra first placed her piece of paper flat on her desk. She centered it, although for no other reason than to just help her with aiming and lining things up.

Next, she grabbed a hold of her photo, taking a good look at it first, and then centered it directly in the middle of the paper. It took her a few seconds to get it perfectly centered, but in the end, she thought she did a pretty good job. Only time would tell, though--she'd either have a framed photo or a photo embedded into a frame.

With everything now in its right place, Sierra raised her wand toward the paper and photo. She imaged what was, in her opinion, the ideal frame. She then made a perfect square, or as close to perfect as she could get, around the paper. "Statua Habitum!" she said. Most of the time, Sierra had to try spells and charms two or three times in class. This time, though, it helped that she'd mastered the frame-making earlier in the class. With a slight pop!, the paper expanded and slowly started to take the shape of a pretty, wooden frame. Seconds later, she had a nice, framed portrait of one of her favorite family members sitting right on her desk.

Ira then wanted a more beautiful, this time a colored photo frame! She reversed her earlier spell, she muttered, "Reverto" and the frame turned back into the paper it was as original. Now Ira decided to make something flowery and pretty and bright!

She made up an image in her mind and focused on it. Then taking her wand, she traced a square around her photograph with the wand's tip and muttered, "Statua Habitum". And there came her beautiful new photo frame!

SPOILER!!: Reverto into a tree growing charm!

While Ira was still admiring her own photo frame, she looked around to see what others were doing.. and saw Kurumi. Was that a tree branch on her desk? What was that doing there? Had Kurumi transfigured her paper into a tree?

Then she saw where that branch originated from and saw that it started from desk of a young Hufflepuff girl! Maybe a first year! Aww.. so maybe her spell had gone wrong and now instead of a frame, a tree had taken shape!

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

"Reverto," Jezzabelle said turning the frame back into the piece of paper she needed. Smoothing it out she placed the picture of her and her grandfather on top and stared at it. "Statua Habitum." She drew a square of the two and watched as nothing happened. Odd. It had worked earlier. She continued to stare at the picture and thought about a nice frame to encase the picture in. Her grandfather "Statua Habitum." Again. Nothing.
