The Student Garden: Herbology Lesson Three (Part Two)
Herbology Lesson Three - Part Two
After packing up earlier that morning, Seren had wandered up to the castle and raided the kitchens before taking a snooze in the staff room. Perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea, but it seemed like the easiest and most rewarding option at the time.
It was some time after noon now, and the Student Garden had again been transformed for the purpose of the lesson. This time it reflected a classroom. You're average, everyday, classroom.. you know, the ones with desks and chairs. Only this was set out in rows on the grass in front of the two bushes they had observed the previous night. The Norandola bushes were unrecognisable now. The male bush had taken on an almost cactus like appearance with sharp purple spikes. The female Norandula was a little smaller than the previous night, big, bright, purple flowers covered it's spindly branches, and along these brunches, bundled up around nodules there were a number of beans. The shiny brownish red beans were the size of an average thumb nail. Caltex, Seren's little bundle of white fluff was positioned in front of the two bushes, as if he were keeping guard of them.
Bentley's blackboard had been dragged out for today's lesson and is positioned beside the two bushes at the front of the class, two sacks of fresh soil and a number of plain terracotta pots sat at its base.
Professor Bentley stands in front of the board, scrawling across it in chalk. The message reads....

If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. Right.. it looked as though most of the students had gathered their things. Though a couple of them seemed not to bother with the task. "If you haven't done so already, come up and grab a pot and a bucket of soil," she instructed. Pausing to wait for the last few students to finish this task.
"Now as we discussed last night, the Norandola has the ability to change it's appearance. No two plants look alike... except for when they're under the influence of the Moon." She indicated to the two bushes which looked remarkably different than the night before. "As you can see, if you look close enough, the beans have formed where the silver crescents were. One of the advantages of the Norandola is that the beans form within a matter of hours, though this only happens during the Full Moon."
Looking down, Seren noticed that Caltex had wandered from his post in front of the bushes, instead choosing to roll and rub himself against an insect of some description.
Turning back to the class, she continued. "Today you will each be imprinting a part of yourself onto a Norandola bean, and you will be planting it into these pots." Yes, that's right, they all got to have super cool plants that resembled them. "So if you've ever wandered what you would look like as a plant, you'll soon find out." More or less.
"But before we get to the beans, you need to prepare your pots. Start by checking to see if your pot has sufficient drainage. You'll know if it does if the pot has four holes in the bottom of it. I know that some of these pots only have three... if that is the case, you need to come up and get yourself a handful of pebbles to place in the bottom of the pot."
She took up a small sack which contained small grey pebbles and placed it on a spare desk at the front. "Fill your pot with soil and make a hole in the center with your finger."
OOC: The lesson has officially started so do not announce your late arrival, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. The lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours.
Annabelle checked to see if her pot had the right amount of holes. She saw three holes at the bottom and knew her pot was ready to go. She filled it up with soil and made a hole in the center of the soil with her finger. She loved doing hands on learning. Belle loved getting dirty too.

Find one, and touch only that one. Once you have your bean, take it back to your desk and get a feel for it. Touch it, feel it, but most importantly tap it with your wand." She demonstrated by picking one off very carefully. Making sure not to touch any others. With her wand in her right hand, she tapped the bean gently. "The longer you touch it, the deeper the connection, the tap of your wand will be sufficient enough to form the connection, but the experience will be more rewarding if you give your bean a little TLC."
"Once you've one this, place your bean in the hole, cover it up, water it and fertilise it. We have some fresh dragon dung here."
With a swish of her wand in the direction of the blackboard, the letters began to morph and rearrange themselves into directions.
"After you have completed the task you may be dismissed, and take your Norandola with you... you will need it for the homework assignment."
Now... she could plant her own Norandola. Cradling the bean in her palm, Seren contemplated waiting till later to do so.
OOC: This is the last part of Lesson Three. Marks for part one and part two will be added together. This lesson will finish in approximately 48 hours.
Important:
[x] The task must be done in 4 posts.
[x] A minimum of a descent sized paragraph (4 lines) per post to be eligible for full marks.
Belle heard the professor's directions and got up and went to the front. She saw all the beans and she was careful to pick the right one. "Hmm which one shall i choose." she thought. She saw a medium sized one and thought it was the right fit. "Come here little bean." she smiled and as she touched it, she felt a connection with it instantly. She tapped the bean with her wand like the professor did and felt something.

Text Cut: Planting a Norandola bean
Instructions:
[1] Collect ONE Norandola bean and connect with it. Touch ONLY the ONE Norandola bean.
[2] Plant it in your pot, make sure to pat it down GENTLY.
[3] Water it LIGHTLY.
[4] Fertilise it.
It didn't look like her plant needed any more water for the time being, so Stella glanced over at her notes to double-check what thenext step was. She was fairly certain she knew it, but seeing as she wasn't exactly looking forward to dealing with the fertilizer, she was stalling. Crossing off the last step she'd accomplished only took a second or two, but she really didn't want to move on. But then, she also didn't exactly want to make a big deal out of it and cast a Bubblehead charm on herself either, seeing as nobody else had. Especially when most of the others who had already done that step were younger than her. She needed to be mature about it all.
But it was dragon dung, so it was difficult really accomplishing that. Standing up again, she slid her gloves on finally, brushing bits of soil off her hands as she did so. It was one thing planting with bare hands, but she was definitely not handling the fertilizer with them. Heading over again with her soil bucket, she quickly placed some fertilizer inside before returning to her station and her little planted Norandola bean. Time to feed it, and she set the bucket down before pinching her nose shut with her left hand. She could fertilise with one hand. Scooping some of the dung up with her right hand, she sprinkled it over the soil, then ruffled her fingers over the top of the soil to mix it all together. Patting that down again gently so as not to disturb her bean, she repeated the process a couple times more before removing her other hand from her nose as she peeled her gloves off. She didn't need them to clean up, after all.
Vanishing what little was left of the fertilizer in her bucket with her wand, she then Scourgified the bucket and her gloves, and cleaned off her station. She wasn't about to leave any mess at all, and after returning the bucket to the front by the blackboard, she headed back to collect her things. Slipping the gloves back into her bag, she swung the strap over her shoulder and picked up her pot gently. "Have a nice day, Professor," she said, giving Professor Bentley another smile, as she started to head out of the garden. Now she just needed to figure out where she could keep her plant without Lyra getting too curious and damaging it.

Once she had chosen a bean and returned to her station, Lily just stood there gazing at the bean in her hand. It looked very...bean-like... After she got bored with staring at it she took out her wand and tapped the bean, to form the bond. Then the ravenclaw smiled a bit and prepared to plant it. She put it down in the soil and gently covered it and patted down on it lightly. With that step done, Lily looked at her parchment to see what step was next.

Violet listened to the Professor Bentley carefully before proceeding with the task. She was quite excited to plant her Norandola bean. How exciting would that be to have a plant that looked like yourself? Violet got up from the cool grass to carefully retrieve one of the beans. At the site of them, her eyes widened with amazement. So many to choose from, but they all look the same so far. Violet used her slender fingers to scoop one of the Norandola beans with extreme care and sucessfully avoided touching the other beans before heading back to her station. She looked at the bottom of the pot and was satisfied that it had four holes at the bottom. It will have good drainage then.
Still holding the bean in her left hand and her wand in her right, she started to talk to her bean about her life. The professor did say that the longer you connect with it, the better the resemblance the plant will have. She talked about her life, her hobbies, her likes and dislikes and her family at home until five minutes later, she brought her wand to the bean and gently tapped it once. A warm glow washed through her body as the bean and her connected with each other. It felt like being on a beach again in Hawaii.
Emrys was fascinated by the differences between the plants as he'd seen them last night and how they appeared today. Truth be told, he was exceptionally curious how he'd look as a plant, and so as soon as he'd ensured that his pot had the right drainage and was ready with soil, he queued up rather enthusiastically to get his norandola bean.
When it was his turn at the plant, he stood a bit back, hands clasped behind his back so not to inadvertently touch more than one. He let his eyes drift over each bean, before settling on one tucked away that just seemed right. He reach in gingerly, collecting the bean and cupping it in his palm. Closing his fingers around it, he walked back to his station.
Back at his station, Emrys opened his fist and looked at his bean. With his right index finger, he rolled the bean around in his palm, looking at it in its entirety before transferring it to his other hand. He placed his now free left hand over his right, like the bean was caught in the middle of applause and just held it there for a minute.
Finally, he let it rest in his open palm as he touched his wand to it, imprinting it, he hoped, with a bit of himself.

After feeling the warm connection with her Norandola bean, she placed it gently into her pot on top of the soil. Then she pulled on her dragonhide gloves before scooping up some dirt and covering the bean with the moist soil. The garden work in herbology class always made Violet smiled and it was probaby one of her favourite classes in Hogwarts. After a few more scoops up soil to cover up the bean, Violet very gently patted down the soil until it was firm, but not choking on bean out of oxygen.
While she finished up the planting, Violet got up and brushed off the excess soil that now covered her robes. She smelled earthly from all of the planting that she had done and went to the front of the class to retrieve a watering can for her bean.

Seeing as a number of students were taking their leave already, Seren pulled at the chain around her neck until she felt the small round pendant in her hand. Flipping the lid of it open, she inspected the time. "Not long to go now guys, so you'd best get a wriggle on if you're behind."
OOC: The lesson will end in approximately 12 hours from the time of this post.
After Belle got the bean, she began to let it know her. She felt it and tapped it with her wand. Then she began to dig a hole in the soil. She placed the bean in the soil and covered it up. She patted the soil gently as if the bean was her own child.

Vickers jotted his notes down on the parchment as the Herbologist went over the steps that needs to be done. When it was time to move he took a pot and duly filled it with soil as instructed, then set it aside on his desk. He neared the Narandola bloom and carefully lifted a bean into his hand. On his way to his desk he rolled the bean several times between his fingers, alternating hands until he was satisfied that the bean has become familiar with his presence. He then took ahold of his wand and gently touched the bean's surface with its tip.

Vickers then pushed his finger down into the soil to create a nice hold then gently dropped the bean into it. He fitted the gloves and covered the hole with the surrounding soil, running his gloved hand over the surface to even things out.

Seed planted gingerly in the ground, it needed to be cared for. Looking back at his parchment and his notes, he could see the first on the set of things to do was water it so Gideon reached inside his pocket for his wand. Item in hand, he took it outand prepared to do just that. Lightly...as was directed...no drowning it too far of course.
"Aguamenti..." he cast, aiming the stream at the newly-potted plant, doing his best to keep his focus on the heaviness so it wasn't too strong. When he was satisfied, gideon ended the spell with a quiet "Finite."

With the soil nice and evened out Vickers took off his right glove and reached out for his wand. He re-read his parchment and noted that they were to water the newly planted bean lightly. Angling his wand a certain way so as not to douse the soil on the initial burst of water, he began the proper wand stroke then followed it with the incantation "Aguamenti". Water started to drizzle lightly from his wand and started sprinkling over the soil, moving his wand hand around so as to moisten the entire pot.

Glenn looked curiously at the plants. They were so fascinating. Realising suddenly as she looked up from her notes that the others had already started getting their beans and finishing the other instructions, the badger finished her sentence messily and stood up to get hers too.
The blonde picked a random bean and held it in her right hand as she went back to her work space. She passed it to her left hand and held it in that hand for some time. Right, what did they have to do now? Oh, right: Tap it with their wand. Glenn pulled her rosewood wand from her robes with some difficulty, forgetting she had also put leftover lolly wrappers in that pocket.
She held the bean in her hand and tapped it delicately with her wand.

With another look at his parchment Vickers knew the last step was gonna be a smelly one. Re-gloving his right hand he picked up the small container and made his way to the dragon dung supply pile, holding his breath as his lips pressed together in a thin line. Quickly he scooped a small mound of dragon dung then returned to where his pot stood, using the spade to distribute the dragon dung evenly throughout the soil.
Once he had completed the task he cleaned up his work area and put away all the gardening materials he's used.

Emrys let the bean sit in his hand a few moments more after tapping it with his wand, looking at it. Had he held it enough? Was it going to grow into something that reflected him and his personality?
Hesitantly, Emrys set the bean in the hole he had made in the soil, careful not to press too hard as he nestled it in the dirt. Satisfied that the bean was at the right depth, he dragged his hand over the top of the soil, covering the bean. Tapping gently with his palm a few times until the soil was firm, but not super-tightly packed, Emrys planted his bean.
Taking a step back, he wiped his soil-y hands on his robes before picking up his wand again.

Ella smiled sheepishly at Professor Bentley, feeling silly for not knowing they were dismissed. "Sorry Professor, I guess I was too excited about planting to hear that part." She said softly, head down. She began gathering her belongings quickly and stood, ready to go. "I'm really excited to see what the plant looks like when it's grown! Thanks for a great lesson." She added, heading for the exit.
Picking up his wand, Emrys concentrated on exactly how much water he wanted. He didn't want to drown his new little bean, after all. With an image of a little trickling stream of water, he pointed his wand just to the side of the pot. If he got a torrent instead, at least it wouldn't ruin his potting.
"Aguamenti," he whispered, watching the tip of his wand intently. Just as he'd pictured, a tiny, but steady, stream of water drizzled from the tip of his wand. He moved his wand a couple passes over the pot, never letting too much water hit the same spot in the soil before moving on.
Satisfied that he has sufficiently watered, but not overwatered, he finished the spell. That still left a matter of a few puddles on his work station, so before moving on to the final step, he took a moment to 'evanesco' his mess.

Last but not least they were to fertilize it. Thats where the dung came in,the smelly dung though perhaps the open air of the garden might help versus the enclosed space of a greenhouse.Grabbing a container, he went to retrieve some from the offered supply, doing his best to not inhale too much. Gideon then returned to his workstation to begin his work...or rather finish it, shoveling small areas of dung atop the planted seed. When he believed himself finished, the Gryffindor cleaned up the borrowed supplies and desk, returning them before taking off his gloves and gathering up his own belongings.
"Good day, Professor Bentley. Thanks for class," he spoke as he headed out, seeing as they were dismissed once they were done.
This... was the part Emrys was least looking forward to. He tugged on his gloves, determined not to have any of that... stuff... come in contact with his skin. Sure, he had helped his mom fertilize her flower beds, but he'd hated it.
He hesitated, tempted to cast a bubble-head charm on himself to avoid the smell. Looking around at the fact that most of his classmates had finished up, however, he went and retrieved a handful of dung, trying his hardest not to breathe. He dropped it in his bucket held in his non-dungy hand and made his way back to his station.
Setting the bucket down, he took a breath and immediately regretted it. Gagging, he scooped a bit of dung out of the bucket and placed it in his pot, using his fingers to mix the fertilizer into the soil. Doing this a few times, he was thankful he hadn't eaten before class.
After the fourth time of adding pinches of fertilizer to the pot, Emrys decided enough was enough and reached for his wand. Mercifully, he realized that he was reaching out with a dung-y gloved hand and pulled it back almost immediately. He peeled off his gloves - using the clean one to pull of the one covered in dung, and then his now bare (and clean) hand to grab his wand. First, he did his best to clean off his gloves, vanishing the fertilizer and then giving them a little rinse. Then he turned to his bucket and his workstation, making sure that everything was in order.
Tucking away all his things, Emrys then cradled his newly planted bean in his arms before turning to make his way to the castle.
"ByeProfessor," he mumbled on his way past.

Elise blinked as she jotted down the notes, in a daze somewhat. What were they doing again? Oh, right, planting Norandulas. Yay! So, checking her notes, she looked towards the plant over there up front. Take ONE bean.
So making her way there, she beamed. This was so exciting! Most of the beans had been taken, but she reached for one that was slightly obscured by a leaf. Cradling it in her cupped palm, she hurried back to her pot. She was falling behind already, and she had to hurry, hurry hurry!

After bidding farewell to the last few students, the ones that had been straggling along, Seren restored the Garden to it's rightful state. After potting her own Norandola bean, she too departed, retiring to her office for the evening.
