The Student Garden: Herbology Lesson Three (Part Two)
Herbology Lesson Three - Part Two
After packing up earlier that morning, Seren had wandered up to the castle and raided the kitchens before taking a snooze in the staff room. Perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea, but it seemed like the easiest and most rewarding option at the time.
It was some time after noon now, and the Student Garden had again been transformed for the purpose of the lesson. This time it reflected a classroom. You're average, everyday, classroom.. you know, the ones with desks and chairs. Only this was set out in rows on the grass in front of the two bushes they had observed the previous night. The Norandola bushes were unrecognisable now. The male bush had taken on an almost cactus like appearance with sharp purple spikes. The female Norandula was a little smaller than the previous night, big, bright, purple flowers covered it's spindly branches, and along these brunches, bundled up around nodules there were a number of beans. The shiny brownish red beans were the size of an average thumb nail. Caltex, Seren's little bundle of white fluff was positioned in front of the two bushes, as if he were keeping guard of them.
Bentley's blackboard had been dragged out for today's lesson and is positioned beside the two bushes at the front of the class, two sacks of fresh soil and a number of plain terracotta pots sat at its base.
Professor Bentley stands in front of the board, scrawling across it in chalk. The message reads....

"But before we get to the beans, you need to prepare your pots. Start by checking to see if your pot has sufficient drainage. You'll know if it does if the pot has four holes in the bottom of it. I know that some of these pots only have three... if that is the case, you need to come up and get yourself a handful of pebbles to place in the bottom of the pot."
She took up a small sack which contained small grey pebbles and placed it on a spare desk at the front. "Fill your pot with soil and make a hole in the center with your finger."
Silvia checked the bottom of her pot. Four holes, good. She filled the pot with the soil from the bucket, then gently pressed the soil in the middle of the pot to form a small hole. Then she looked up and waited for the next instructions.

Find one, and touch only that one. Once you have your bean, take it back to your desk and get a feel for it. Touch it, feel it, but most importantly tap it with your wand." She demonstrated by picking one off very carefully. Making sure not to touch any others. With her wand in her right hand, she tapped the bean gently. "The longer you touch it, the deeper the connection, the tap of your wand will be sufficient enough to form the connection, but the experience will be more rewarding if you give your bean a little TLC."
"Once you've one this, place your bean in the hole, cover it up, water it and fertilise it. We have some fresh dragon dung here."
With a swish of her wand in the direction of the blackboard, the letters began to morph and rearrange themselves into directions.
"After you have completed the task you may be dismissed, and take your Norandola with you... you will need it for the homework assignment."
Silvia quickly scribbled the directions down in her notebook, then followed the group of students up to the front. After a few moments she was at the front of the line and the Norandola bush was before her. Silvia stepped close to the bush and examined the leaves for beans. There was one sitting on the side of the bush that seemed to draw her eye and she reached for it, careful not to brush her hand against any of the other beans. Once she had it, she closed her hand around it and made her way back to her work space. Rolling the small bean around in her small fingers, she wondered how long she should hold it for before planting it.

After making sure he had a good hole in the soil, Daichi turned his attention towards Professor Bentley as she spoke to the class again. Hearing the instructions, the Slytherin left his working space and stood in line with the other students until it was his turn to grab a bean while wondering what TLC was. His question was soon answered as Kurumi voiced his thoughts and listening in on their conversation he had his answer. Carefully, as not to touch any of the other beans he picked one out for himself and as he walked back to his pot while holding the bean in his right hand, moving his fingers a little as though he was petting it.

Ella had now safely buried the little bean under the soil and needed to make sure it had enough water. She picked up her wand from the table and pointed it at the pot. "Okay little bean, here comes a nice shower for you." She gave the soil a little pat where she knew the bean to be and then said,"Aguamenti!" Seeing that the soil had enough water without drowning the bean, she then said, "Finite!""There you are, all watered."
Next came the fertilizer. Ella grabbed some and began to add it to her soil, knowing it was important for the little bean's growth. "There you are, this stuff will help you to be big and strong." She said softly, smiling down at her pot. When she was done fertilizing, Ella returned the extra and began to clean her area, careful not to knock over the pot. She couldn't wait to see what her Norandola plant would look like when it was all grown.
Now that she had finished, Ella crossed off the last steps from her list and sat back, humming to the little bean while she waited for the next instructions.

Shifting her little Norandola bean to her left hand for a moment, Stella made sure to cross off the first step in her notes before she thought about moving on. Plus, she stroked the bean a few more times as she reached over to pull her pot closer. Maybe I should name you, she thought, looking at the bean in her hand for a couple more seconds. There was time for that, though, as she wanted to make sure she come up with a good name. She figured they were going to be taking care of their personal Norandola plants for a while, after all. Therefore she could think about possible names for a while as well, although she did lean closer to her bean to whisper the plan to it. She wanted it to know it would be named before she bothered separating it from her. Planting was basically separation.
Once she was fairly certain the bean knew her intentions, she picked it up out of her hand and gently set it into the hole she'd created in the soil. She wasn't about to drop it, since that would just make it feel like she didn't care about it and she figured that would be bad. Instead, she sang again softly as she covered the hole, patting it down with the lightest of touches. At least that would be her bean's last memory before being buried. She was determined to do whatever it took to make sure Professor Bentley was happy with her care for her plant.

Sophie was excited to start working with this plant she had never heard about. She was still a little bit confused about the it-will-look-like-you part, but she wasn eager to see the result. She hoped it didn't take long until they saw something interesting!
She went to the line and waited for her turn to pick ONE Norandola bean. She stared at all of them before picking - and touching! - just ONE of them. They looked so interesting and cool!
Already by her pot, Sophie started turning the bean around in her hands, observing it as if it changed its appearance as she looked at it from different angles. It was a simple bean, but it was amazing at the same time. Sophie's eyes sparkled as she stroked it for a while and smiled at it. She really liked that bean for no particular reason. It was a cool bean.
She finally pulled out her wand and tapped the bean with it. They weren't supposed to say anything while tapping it, right? Probably not.

Now that her bean was all tucked away under the soil, Kurumi dusted her hands off and went to grab a small bucket. She didn't really trust herself with Aguamenti or a watering can on such a delicate bean, so the prefect decided to go with another technique. Pointing her wand at the bucket now, Kurumi cast Aguamenti and waited for it to fill to a decent level. "Finite." Pocketing her wand now, Kurumi used her hands to scoop some water from the bucket and sort of flicked it onto the soil. She paused every now and again to test the soil for dampness, and when it no longer completely crumbled under her touch, Kurumi banished the remaining water and cleaned off her hands.
That should just about do it for the watering. Just to be sure, Kurumi picked up the pot and eyed the four hole at the bottom, sticking her fingers in one of them. She didn't really notice any dampness, which certainly meant that she hadn't over-watered the bean. Satisfied, Kurumi removed any dirt from her hands and under her finger nails that may have remained, and got ready to finish off the rest of the task.

Sophie made sure to check the blackboard before doing anything else. "Plant it in your pot, make sure to pat it down GENTLY." Right.
Kneeling down by the pot, Sophie placed the Norandola bean carefully on the soil. Blink. Duuhh, she had to make a hole first! She had been so focused on trying to pass on her DNA or whatever to the seed that she had momentarily forgotten about the basics. Sophie giggled at herself and held up the bean again, shaking her head. So silly of her! With two finger, she finally made a deep enough hole and placed the Norandola bean into it. "There you go, bean, doesn't this feel better than the outside? I'm sure it does!" She covered the bean with more soil and patted it down GENTLY, as it was so well emphasized by Professor Bentley on the blackboard.
So since they were going to be dealing with the weird plants again, August was very happy.
The Gryffindor listened to his head of house explain to them what all they needed to to do and he was slightly embarrassed he had forgotten to grab a pot when he first entered the classroom. Once they were ok'ed to start working on preparing their pots, the lion stood up and walked to the Professor's table and retirieved a pot with four holes in the bottom and a bucket of soil.
Once he was back at his own work station he put on his gloves and used a spade to fill his pot with soil making a nice home for his Norandola bean. Once it was full he poke his index finger into the dirt to make a good 3 inch deep hole.
Done.
Now Professor Bently had instructed them to go actually retrieve the bean. Now he was slightly nervous he would mess something up. Auggie stood up and walked towards the female Norandola bush and removed his gloves before picking just one of the small brownish-red beans. He took it back to his desk and began to roll it around in his fingers, and placed it in his palm and firmly rotated it in his hands.
Now that Selina had connected with a plant, which was much cooler than it sounded, the fourth year was ready to move on with the rest of the assignment. It was one of the weirder requests that Professor Bentley had ever asked them to do and, yet, Selina found herself very drawn in to the lesson. She loved the whole concept and the idea that the plant would respond to her life and appearance. It was an awesome idea. Whatever wizard had breed the plant was genius.
Like holding a fragile piece of glass, Selina smiled at the bean and placed it in the pot. Her hands covered it lightly and she pat it down very gently. Perfect.
After he had touched all over the Norandola bean for a few minutes it was time to plant the little guy.
"I've got to put you in your new home Plant August. Don't worry though, I will be bringing you with me." He was really excited to see what he would look like as a plant and how fast it would grow. Professor Bentley had definately made him curious about the plant. The Gryffindor placed the bean in the hole and then covered it up and used his bare fingers to gently push it into place.
Silvia spent a few more moments trying to connect with the bean. She passed the bean back and forth between her hands a few times, then gently rolled it around her left palm. This plant seemed really interesting, and Silvia usually wasn't very interested in plants. But she was really looking forward to seeing how this one turned out once it grew. Hoping that she had spent enough time connecting with it, she pulled out her wand and tapped it.
Placing the wand aside, Silvia pulled the pot a little closer. She gave the bean one last look before slowly setting it down in the soil, into the small hole she had made to nest the bean in. Carefully she patted it down, then glanced at her notes for the next step.

Little Norandola/August bean was now planted and tucked into his new potted home and was ready to start growing. It was definately going to be exciting to see how he, the plant, would turn out.
After the bean had been planted in the soil-filled pot, August looked up at the board for the next step. Watering. "Where can I find some water for you?" he whispered to the pot. Oh yeah, he had a wand.
"Aguamenti." Water trickled out of the tip of his wand over the open top of the pot. He stopped after it had been watered lightly.
~ Mrs. Steve Harrington ~ It be like that sometimes.
Jory waited in line for his turn to pick the Norandola bean. When it was his turn, he spotted one right at the front of the plant.
While walking back to his station, he roll the bean around in both of his hands. He decided to do this for a while after all Professor Bentley did say the longer the touch, the deeper the connection.

[2] Plant it in your pot, make sure to pat it down GENTLY.
[3] Water it LIGHTLY.
[4] Fertilise it.
Gently patting down the soil over her Norandola bean one last time, Stella stopped her quiet singing as she glanced at the instructions once again, crossing off the second step as she went along. The song stayed in her head, though, just as a running theme. In fact, she had a feeling she'd think about Herbology every time she thought of the song after this, but that didn't necessarily seem like a bad thing. It fit with the memories of her mother singing the song to her oddly well, at least. And she still felt like it had helped her bond with her Norandola bean, even if she wasn't entirely sure the bean had the capapbilities of hearing her. It didn't really matter.
What she needed to do next was water, and, seeing as she didn't see any watering cans laid out for their use, she just picked up her wand again. That charm was easy enough, and she pointed her wand at the soil in the pot carefully. "Aguamenti," she cast softly, watching as only a little more than a trickle of water came out of the tip of her wand to fall on the soil. The instructions had said only to lightly water the bean, so she watched the soil intently and cut the charm off once it was barely darkened. Hopefully that was enough water for now. She could add more later after all.

Post#4: fertilizing with Dragonite dung <3

Kurumi sprinkled just a bit more water over the buried bean when she noticed the soil was drying up rather quickly and then grabbed a small bucket to go and collect some dragon dung before returning to her seat. Merlin...this stuff was FRESH. Plugging her nose with her left hand, Kurumi used her gloved right hand to sprinkle some of it over the soul and then used her hand to mix it in, massaging the dirt and taking extra care to not jostle the bean in anyway.
Scooping up some more and sprinkling it into the pot and patted it down into the soil as well. Merlin did this stuff smell awful. It was worse than when Ryunosuke had attempted to make black eggs using charms over the summer when she was in Diagon Alley. The sulfur smell had been bad enough...but the rotten egg smell...now THAT was bad.
Having finished all of her tasks, Kurumi cleaned up her station with a quick wave of her wand - banishing all dirt that had fallen and returned all the supplies she had borrow back to their proper place. Kurumi then gathered her things and...was confused as to why some people were sitting around waiting for further instructions. Professor Bentley had told them that they were dismissed when they had finished...
"Professor," Kurumi said as she stood before the woman with her plant hugged to her chest and her bag slung over her right shoulder. "Do you have time after everyone is finished her to teach me how to floss Xavier?"

Now it was time to water and nourish her little tiny bean. The cute little bean that she had connected with made Selina want to provide for it. It was almost like she was a proud parent because it was a little but of her that was going to be in the world. So she picked up a watering can and sprinkled the water on it lightly. For a few moments she let the bean drink in the water until she pullee the can away and was done.

Tearing her eyes away from the...patient... Badgers, Seren offered Kurumi a small smile. Indeed, she had promised the girl a session. "Not today I'm afraid, but perhaps we can arrange for another time... this week perhaps?"
Collect a bean without touching more than one?? That's impossible. For Janice, at least.
Janice walked front again, this time preparing to be as careful as she could. She carefully chose a bean with most side not touching the other beans --luckily, one had its end poking out of the pile-- and picked it up with the tip of her fingernails. Boy, she thought, I've never thought that collecting a bean could be this hard.
When she safely rescued a bean out, she quickly squirmed and touch it repeatedly while walking back to her station. After getting there, she took out her wand and touched it.

Momentarily distracted by Caltex scratching behind his ears, Kurumi almost missed Professor Bentley respond to her request. "That's alright, professor," she said with a nod. She could spend the rest of the afternoon studying for her OWLs and writing letters home and...to Jonathan. She wished he would write back...she was worried...and having serious abandonment issues again. "I'll stop by your office later." To, you know, figure out a time and what not.
Giving the puppy one last friendly smile, Kurumi offered Professor Bentley a quick bow before heading out of the garden. She needed to do some of that T...TL...that three letter abbreviation was...with her plant. Hopefully...Walnut would use the pot for other things...

Now that the bean was resting in its pot, it was time to water it. Silvia reached for her wand again. By now, they had used the aguamenti charm quite a few times this term, and Silvia felt she had good control over it. "Aguamenti," she said, concentrating on how much water she wanted. A small sprinkling of water came out of the tip of her wand and she let it fall on the soil where the bean was planted. When it seemed like enough, she muttered "Finite," and ended the spell. "There you go," the young student said to the bean. She set her wand down; only one more step left.
__________________ The road goes ever on and on...
After his Norandola bean had been lightly watered by magic, the Gryffindor saw that it was now time to fertilize the thing--the last step of the process. As he walked back to the front of the room where the fertlizer was located he sort of wondered if it always HAD to be dragon dung or if that was just better for plants than other types, like the Hippogriff stuff he had dropped off at Professor Bentley's office a week ago.
Once he reached the bag, he put his gloves on and took a handful and carried it back to his potted bean. He then lightly sprinkled the stuff over the top. Now that he was done, the lion shook the remaining fertilizer from his gloves and then packed them away into his bag and then picked up his baby August plant/Norandola bean in its pot and walked to the door. "Goodbye Professor Bentley! See you later!"
While patting the soil down, Sophie glanced at the blackboard again. She cleaned off her hands and pulled out her wand.
Water it LIGHTLY, it said. Sophie stared down at her pot and concentrated, pointing her wand at it. "Aguamenti!" She watched as the soil slowly darkened with water. "Finite." That was probably enough water for now.

Alyssa blinked when the Professor told her that she could leave in a tone that wasn't used to. She quietly cleaned her workstation and the bucket she had used, by pointing her wand inside it using the "Scourgify" spell before returning it to where she got it from. Then she picked up her bag and her plant, walked up to the professor and mumbled,"Thank You, Professor." before leaving the greenhouse.
It was time for the last step, the fertilizing. Silvia slipped on her gloves; she really didn't want to touch dragon dung with her bare hands. Moving up to the front, she put some fertilizer in a small bucket and carried it back to her seat. Once there, she reached into the bucket and grabbed a handful. Slowly she sprinkled it around the pot, spreading it out evenly on all sides. Carefully, so as not to disturb the bean, she mixed up the fertilizer with the top most layers of soil. There, that should be good. Silvia pulled off her gloves and cleaned them before putting them away. Then she cleaned up her area and returned the bucket and other materials. Picking up the pot she said, “Bye Professor,” before leaving the garden.

Sophie looked once more at the blackboard. After reading what they were supposed to do, she got up and went to get some dragon dung. Not her favorite part, but she was kind of used to it.
Walking back to her workstation with a fertilizer bucket on her hands, Sophie knelt down by the pot and started the work. After pouring some dung over the soil and mixed them together as well as she could, carefully enough not to make holes or anything on the soil.
She patted it all down a little bit more to make sure that the bean was nice and cozy. Sophie pictured a happy Norandola bean under the earth and smiled. She was sure that her seed was comfortable and was going to grow really well!
After putting the dung bucket away, Sophie cleaned off her hands once again and grabbed her pot. "I can't wait for it to grow, Professor Bentley! See you around!" She said happily as she walked pass the witch and left the Student Garden.
