Herbology Lesson Three - Part Two
After packing up earlier that morning, Seren had wandered up to the castle and raided the kitchens before taking a snooze in the staff room. Perhaps it hadn't been such a good idea, but it seemed like the easiest and most rewarding option at the time.
It was some time after noon now, and the Student Garden had again been transformed for the purpose of the lesson. This time it reflected a classroom. You're average, everyday, classroom.. you know, the ones with desks and chairs. Only this was set out in rows on the grass in front of the two bushes they had observed the previous night. The Norandola bushes were unrecognisable now. The male bush had taken on an almost cactus like appearance with sharp purple spikes. The female Norandula was a little smaller than the previous night, big, bright, purple flowers covered it's spindly branches, and along these brunches, bundled up around nodules there were a number of beans. The shiny brownish red beans were the size of an average thumb nail. Caltex, Seren's little bundle of white fluff was positioned in front of the two bushes, as if he were keeping guard of them.
Bentley's blackboard had been dragged out for today's lesson and is positioned beside the two bushes at the front of the class, two sacks of fresh soil and a number of plain terracotta pots sat at its base.
Professor Bentley stands in front of the board, scrawling across it in chalk. The message reads....

A plant that resembled them?
The thought was both interesting and scary O__o
After listening to the first instructions from the Professor, Daichi picked up his own pot from the table and shoved it a little closer to him so that he could work without spilling the soil from the bucket. Hopefully.
Lookin in the bottom of the pot he saw that his pot had four holes and he left his working station to pick a handful of pebbles at the front of the class before returning to his pot. Placing the pebbled at the bottom of the pot , Daichi took his arm out of it and smiled.
Right, so what now? The Slytherin turned to look at his classmates and saw the Ravenclaw with the french accent putting in the soil from the bucket in to the pot. Doing the same thing, Daichi filled the pot with the soil ground until the pot was full and made a hole with his finger in the middle.
It didn't surprise her that Caltex was getting so much attention. The Pomeranian had a way with people. Wrapping them around his little fluffy paw. "I don't see why not, but be careful... he likes shoe laces." Hence why she no longer wore anything with them. Turns out they made for better food than clothing.
"Thanks!"
Janice hopped off her seat and walked towards the little white dog. She kneeled in front of it as she get closer and let the dog lick her fingers. At one point, doggie tried to nibble on one of her black shoe laces. Janice took it as a cue for her, "I think I should go back now," she murmured, continuing her thoughts.

Alyssa noticed Janice run up to the Professor to pet Caltex and it was only then, that she realized that the dog had been there all along. Making sure that her pot was sitting properly on her workstation. Alyssa ran up to the Professor and Caltex, knelt down and started petting him. "Hey there Caltex, it's been a long time since I've seen you. You've really grown." It was then that Alyssa realized that she had not asked the Professor permission to play with her dog. "I apologize for my rudeness, Professor. I should have asked you permission first before playing with Caltex. I meant no disrespect." Alyssa apologized to the Professor, immediately standing up.

Elise beamed. YAY! At least there were no Snargaluffs involved here... This would be AWESOME! Looking down at the pot she had taken, she grinned. Four holes, so she didn't have to add those little rock thingies.
Taking a shovel or trowel or whatever it was called, Elise dug out some soil and transferred it carefully into her pot. No spilling, that's just ugly. Once tha twas done, she poked her finger into the soil to make a little hole.

They were going to imprint themselves on norandola beans!? That was wicked! Ella was extremely excited now, bouncing a little in her seat. She pulled herself together though so she could accomplish the tasks Professor Bentley had assigned. First, she pulled her pot in front of her and checked the bottom. The pot she had only had three holes so she got up, heading over to where the pebble bag was. She returned to her seat with a handful of pebbles and dropped them into the pot gently. Next, she added a sufficient amount of soil. Now what was she supposed to do. She scratched her chin for a minute before remembering. Taking her finger, she made a hole in the center of the soil, perfect size for a bean.

Everything seemed to be going rather smoothly so far. Nobody had broken anything, hurt themselves, fallen asleep... success!
Seren continued to observe the class in motion, checking their pots, grabbing pebbles and filling their pots with soil.

Of course, leave it up to her Prefect to ask another good question. She was rather good at these. Very attentive. "That's a good question Kurumi, though unfortunately I can't answer that one. These bushes have been here some time before I arrived." It was someone else's legacy.

Seren smirked. That poor child has no idea what she was getting herself into. Caltex would soon be the master of half the students at Hogwarts.

Of course, Janice wasn't the only one pulled into Caltex's sphere. "That's perfectly fine dear, just don't let him distract you from the lesson." Because at the end of the day it was Alyssa that would have to sit her finals. Not herself, nor Caltex.
Figuring it was about time to move on, seeing as most of the students were keeping up with the task, Seren moved in front of the board and waited patiently for their attention.
After her brief pause, waiting for students to stop what they were doing and direct their eyes to her, she then cleared her throat and continued. "Good work everyone, now I need you all to form a line, come up and pick off ONE Norandola bean," she said emphasising the one. "Do NOT, under any circumstances dilly dally and touch them all. Find one, and touch only that one. Once you have your bean, take it back to your desk and get a feel for it. Touch it, feel it, but most importantly tap it with your wand." She demonstrated by picking one off very carefully. Making sure not to touch any others. With her wand in her right hand, she tapped the bean gently. "The longer you touch it, the deeper the connection, the tap of your wand will be sufficient enough to form the connection, but the experience will be more rewarding if you give your bean a little TLC."
"Once you've one this, place your bean in the hole, cover it up, water it and fertilise it. We have some fresh dragon dung here."
With a swish of her wand in the direction of the blackboard, the letters began to morph and rearrange themselves into directions.

Now... she could plant her own Norandola. Cradling the bean in her palm, Seren contemplated waiting till later to do so.

Ella paid close attention to Bentley's instructions, noting her emphasis on only touching one bean. Then, before getting into line, Ella scribbled down the steps she would need to complete.

When she had finished, Ella stood up and got into line with her classmates, eager to pick her norandola bean. When she finally got to the beans, she rolled up her sleeve so she could be more careful picking up her own bean. She gently reached down with her right hand and grabbed a bean to her left, cradling it gently in her palm. "Hello little one, you're coming with me." She pulled her arm away carefully, not wanting to drop the bean or touch any others in the process. Then, Ella headed back to her seat so she could begin bonding with her little norandola bean.

When Amelia heard Professor Bentley clear her throat, she looked up from her pot. It was time for them to plant their Norandola beans, so she wanted to make sure that she listened to the instructions carefully. She made sure to write down the steps as they appeared on the blackboard.
That done, she headed to where a line of her classmates had formed, waiting patiently for her turn to select a bean. When the time finally came for her, she carefully looked at each remaining bean before finally picking one up with her left hand. "I'm going to plant you, little bean," she told it affectionately as she started making her way back to her station with it.
She felt her bean some more as she tried getting more connected to it. She studied it carefully and then picked her wand up with her right hand. She gently tapped the bean with it just like Professor Bentley had demonstrated.

The whole Norandola plant concept was one of the coolest things that Selina had ever heard Bentley teach them about. Not only did the plant have magical attributes, but it connected with its planter. It seemed like it was more than just a plant- it was an extension of a person's being. Personally, Selina was curious to see how her own plant was going to turn out. It was like a little mirror into a person's life... how would hers end up looking? Beautiful or a mess? Because she was certain that everyone's life had a little bit of both of that.
She wrote down the instructions and grabbed a Norandola bean herself. The little white bean was sort of fragile and beautiful. She turned the bean over in her hand to inspect it and connect with it to the best of her ability. It was difficult to try and connect to a plant, but she wanted desperately to do so. This whole lesson was brilliant and she wanted to make sure that she followed the instructions to the letter.
Finally she felt a warmth in her that was not coming from the plant per say, but from Selina's own smile. She liked this plant. Then she drew out her wand and tapped the plant with her wand... connected.

Now that Ella had her Norandola bean back at her seat, she began to turn it over genly in her hand. She inspected it carefully, noting how delicate the little bean seemed to be. "Hey there little bean, I'm going to plant you nice and cozy in some soil. You'll be happy there." Ella said softly, smiling at the little thing. She began to stroke the bean gently, hoping that the more she made contact with it, the more it took away from her. "You're quite smooth, aren't you little guy?"
After passing the bean between her hands for a while, Ella decided it was time to tap it with her wand. She held the bean in the palm of her left hand and using her right, gently tapped it with her wand. "There you go." Ella said cheerfully. Now to plant the bean.

Now that Amelia had bonded with her bean and connected with it via her wand, it was time for her to plant it in the soil.
Placing the bean in the hole that she had made, she discovered that she hadn't quite made it deep enough to cover everything up as desired. The hole would need to be expanded a little.
Carefully placing the bean onto the desk, Amelia worked to make the opening a little bigger so that the bean would be covered with enough soil, but not too much. Once that was done she placed the bean back into the hole and carefully covered it up with soil. She gently patted it down.

Cue a small frown from the Gryffindor. She had rather been hoping to find out whose plants those belonged to, but it was almost just as fun to venture a guess. But before she could do that, Professor Bentley had move things along and Kurumi readied herself for the task. Bare hands were the way to go, right? Skinship and all that was a very important concept she had had growing up, so she figured that was the way to go with whatever bean she selected.
Approaching the plant, Kurumi...sort of waited for a sign to tell her which bean she should have. It seemed sort of odd to her to just snatch one up when this particular plant came across as something so personal. Just then, something bright caught Kurumi's attention and temporarily blinded her, like a light reflecting off a mirror. Once her vision cleared, Kurumi saw that it was, in fact, a bean that had been doing that. Yep, this would be the one. Gently picking it, Kurumi held it in the palm of her hand for a few moments before heading towards her seat.
Before she did, she stopped in front of Professor Bentley, her cheeks the color of ripe peaches. "Um...professor," she whispered. This was so embarrassing and Kurumi liked to think that there really was no more language barrier with her and English - especially considering her father was British - but there were still some instances where she was completely clueless to what some things meant. "What...what...what does TLC mean?" For some reason it reminded her of waterfalls...

She'd been keeping a keen eye on the students as they collected their bean. Touching other people beans was simply rude, and could have a mild effect on the outcome of the Norandola, which would also be rude.

However, she looked away briefly as Kurumi asked a rather amusing question.

Well ... that needed to be set straight.
"TLC stands for tender loving care... something which should be taken very seriously when it comes to herbology."
If that wasn't obvious enough already. Loving plants was one thing she did, and she did well... now it was time to teach the students the same principle.

Ella had now bonded with her bean and next she had to plant it. She looked down at her palm and smiled at the bean. "Okay, now I'm going to put you into the pot. Don't worry, you'll have lots of nice soil and water to drink." She said, stroking the bean gently.
The first year lifted the bean carefully and placed it into the hole she had made in the soil. She made sure that the bean had enough room and then got ready to cover it up. "Sleep now, little bean, you'll be big and strong before you know it." Ella gave the little bean one last stroke and then covered it with soil. "Nice and cozy." She said, patting the soil down gently over the bean. It was kind of like tucking in a child at bedtime, at least that's how Ella was thinking of her current task. Now for some water and fertilizer.

Kurumi's cheeks flushed a bit more. That seemed so obvious now that Professor Bentley had said it out loud. "Thank you, professor," she said with a polite bow. Awkward...that is how she was feeling right now...really awkward. Still, that was another one that would be going into her phrase book to remember for future use.
Coddling the bean in her hands, Kurumi hummed softly and returned to her seat. It was the same song she had sung to her fireseed bush and, well, the song would now be forever associated with Herbology. Kurumi checked her hole again, making sure that it was still an appropriate depth and then ever so gently lowered her hand. She wasn't sure if talking to the bean would really produce any results, but she did cradle it a bit more in her hands and then gave it a soft Eskimo kiss before gingerly placing it into the hole and covering it up with a layer of soil and patted it down with her two fingers instead of her whole hand to be sure that she didn't apply too much force.

Alyssa listened as the Professor told them what they would be doing. As she listened and looked at the Board at what the Professor had written. She quickly wrote them down in her journal.

1. Check pot to make sure that it has sufficient drainage.
2. Fill pot with soil
3. Make a hole in the center of the soil with finger
4.Collect ONE Norandola bean and connect with it.
5. Plant it in your pot, make sure to pat it down GENTLY.
6. Water it LIGHTLY.
7. Fertilise it.
She then went up to the front and joined the line. Once she had collected her Norandola seed, she returned to her workstation. She held the seed in her hand, inspected it, and then started stroking it. Before connecting with it, she took out her wand and gently tapped the seed with it. Now it was time to connect with it in the only way she knew how. She spoke to it.
"Hello. I know you don't know me. My name is Alyssa and I'm here to be your friend. I want you to know that I'll be putting you in the soil, so please don't be afraid. I know that you miss your other brothers and sisters. I miss mine too. But now it's time for you to be on your own. But don't worry I'm here and I'll take good care of you." Alyssa whispered to it. She then closed her eyes and imagined that she was part of the seed and tried to send thoughts of comfort and love to it. After a while, she opened her eyes, and stroking the seed one last time, before she proceeded to perform the next part of the task.

"Rest little bean all snuggled up in your bed," Amelia said soothingly as she finished patting down the soil that covered it. She wanted her little bean to grow perfectly and be her amazing Norandola plant. :3 Now the next step was watering it so that it had a lot to drink and could grow tall and strong and healthy. "I'm going to feed you now so that you won't be thirsty anymore."
Amelia headed over to where the watering cans were kept and grabbed one before heading back to her station. Setting it down, she picked up her wand and pointed it inside the opening of the watering can, "Aguamenti." She watched as the water filled the can to the perfect amount. "Finite," she added before pulling her wand out and setting it back down.
She started sprinkling the soil with water now. "Drink time! I'll make sure not to give you too much water!" The last thing she wanted was to have her poor bean drown.

Now that she had connected with the seed, it was time for Alyssa to plant the seed in the pot. She first made sure that the hole that she made earlier with her finger was deep enough. She stuck her index finger in the hole she had created earlier and made sure that it was deep enough. Once she was done, she looked at the seed in the palm of her other hand. "Okay, I'm going to put you into the soil now. Please don't be afraid." she whispered to it, kissing it on the tip before slowly lowering it into the hole in the soil.
Once the seed disappeared into the hole, using her hands, Alyssa scooped the soil over it, covering it until she was sure that the seed was buried deep into the soil. Then she gently patted the soil with her fingers making sure that she didn't do it too hard. Once she was done, she quickly scratched out the steps in her journal.

Gideon was just finishing up the last bit of dirt, adding it to his pot over the rest of the soil and the pebbles beneath as Professor Bentley described what they were to do for the last part of the classwork. Planting and dealing with their own seeds and he was certainly curious as to what his influence would cause to happen to the plant when it finally developed. Added a more personal touch to the work then just the health of the growing living thing they were to be in charge of like the fireseed bushes.
He got up from his chair after placing down his quill on the desk and followed his classmates into the line that was forming. And when it was his turn, the Gryffindor gingerly reached in and picked up a seed, careful to keep his touch away from the others. So far so good, he smiled and returned to his seat, lightly passing it from one hand to the other before balancing it in one hand as he retrieved his wand from his pocket.
Tap...just as Bentley demonstrated, hopefully to the seed's benefit.

Alyssa checked her journal to make sure that she was following the steps as indicated by the Professor. Now that she had successfully planted the seed, it was time for her to water it. "Now here comes the water. Don't worry. I'll be very careful. I won't drown you."she whispered to the seed trying to tell it what she was going to do next. Unholstering her wand, she pointed it into the pot and said,"Aguamenti" making sure that she concentrated on the water flow as she didn't want to drown the seed. Water slowly trickled out of the wand and Alyssa moved her wand around over the soil until the soil was damp but not too damp. When she was sure that the soil had been watered lightly, Alyssa ended the spell saying,"FINITE".
Then she picked up her quill and scratched off that step in her journal.

Stella hadn't had to look up or anything as Professor Bentley had cleared her throat to get everyone's attention. She' dalready finished getting her pot ready, after all, although she'd gotten slightly distracted when Daichi had looked over toward her before preparing his own pot. She hadn't thought those instructions were that hard to follow, but maybe he'd been off in his own world or something. It didn't matter, as the professor had started talking again, explaining how they were going to imprint their beans. Hmm, she thought, I would have expected there to be more to it than just showing the bean affection and tapping it with my wand. There hadn't even been a spell to it, or at least none was explained. Just a tap, and she made sure to write down the instructions as the blackboard shifted to give them out.

Once that was all noted down, she stood up to get into the line for a bean, singing "Blackbird" in her head again. It had helped her bond with her fireseed bush, pllus it just calmed her down. Apparently harvesting Norandola bushes wasn't something to rush, after all, and once she got to the bush, she just looked at it for a moment. Deciding which bean to pick, even though it was slightly easier given the fact that a lot of them had already gotten chosen. Finally, she slowly reached out and slid her hand delicately between the branches to pluck one that was half-hidden inside, then withdrew her hand and the bean carefully so as to not inadvertently hit any others. Cupping her hand into a loose fist, she returned to her station before setting out to imprint her bean. Opening her hand, she just looked at the tiny bean in the center of her palm before stroking it a few times, leaning close to quietly sing a few lines of the song running through her head before curling her fingers around it again. She didn't want to drop it while she was getting her wand out, but she uncurled them after only a few seconds and gently tapped the tip of her wand on the bean.

Alyssa checked her journal again to make sure that she was following the steps as indicated by the Professor precisely, before going up to the front to fill her bucket with some dragon dung fertilizer. She then returned to her workstation and reaching into the bucket with her hand, she grabbed a handful of dragon dung fertilizer, and then slowly sprinkled the dung on top of the soil until it covered the entire pot. She then made sure that the fertilizer was thoroughly mixed in with the soil using her hands. Once she had completed the task, she brushed the fertilizer and soil off her hands, before picking up her quill and scratching off the last step she had completed, in her journal.

Now that she had watered her bean, Amelia needed to fertilize it. Not really her favourite step in the process, she still understood that it was important and wanted her Norandola plant to be in the best condition possible.
She took some fertilizer and added it to the pot as carefully as possible while humming a tune. She made sure that she was doing it properly and carefully and that nothing would happen to her precious bean. She blended it with the soil now.
When she was done, she returned her bucket of fertilizer to where she had got it from and then returned to her workstation. She cleaned all the soil and fertilizer off of her hand and then started packing her stuff up.
"Thank you for the awesome lesson, Professor Bentley!" she said as she grabbed her plant and left to go back to the castle.

Seren laughed lightly. "It is indeed, and I'm very well thank you for asking." She watched the girls reaction to the changes in the Norandolas appearance. Priceless. "And how are you today?"
Right.. it looked as though most of the students had gathered their things. Though a couple of them seemed not to bother with the task. "If you haven't done so already, come up and grab a pot and a bucket of soil," she instructed. Pausing to wait for the last few students to finish this task.
"Now as we discussed last night, the Norandola has the ability to change it's appearance. No two plants look alike... except for when they're under the influence of the Moon." She indicated to the two bushes which looked remarkably different than the night before. "As you can see, if you look close enough, the beans have formed where the silver crescents were. One of the advantages of the Norandola is that the beans form within a matter of hours, though this only happens during the Full Moon."
Looking down, Seren noticed that Caltex had wandered from his post in front of the bushes, instead choosing to roll and rub himself against an insect of some description.
Turning back to the class, she continued. "Today you will each be imprinting a part of yourself onto a Norandola bean, and you will be planting it into these pots." Yes, that's right, they all got to have super cool plants that resembled them. "So if you've ever wandered what you would look like as a plant, you'll soon find out." More or less.
"But before we get to the beans, you need to prepare your pots. Start by checking to see if your pot has sufficient drainage. You'll know if it does if the pot has four holes in the bottom of it. I know that some of these pots only have three... if that is the case, you need to come up and get yourself a handful of pebbles to place in the bottom of the pot."
She took up a small sack which contained small grey pebbles and placed it on a spare desk at the front. "Fill your pot with soil and make a hole in the center with your finger."
OOC: The lesson has officially started so do not announce your late arrival, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. The lesson will continue in approximately 12 hours.
"I'm very good Professor." Lily replied smiling. But on to preparing for the bean. The ravenclaw made sure that her pot had drainage, four holes in this pot... Then she put soil in it, just enough to fill the pot, patting it down gently. After she finished she took her finger and made a little hole that kinda looked like Lily had put a long thimble into the soil. But then onto the next step...

Seren smirked. That poor child has no idea what she was getting herself into. Caltex would soon be the master of half the students at Hogwarts.
Of course, Janice wasn't the only one pulled into Caltex's sphere. "That's perfectly fine dear, just don't let him distract you from the lesson." Because at the end of the day it was Alyssa that would have to sit her finals. Not herself, nor Caltex.
Figuring it was about time to move on, seeing as most of the students were keeping up with the task, Seren moved in front of the board and waited patiently for their attention.
After her brief pause, waiting for students to stop what they were doing and direct their eyes to her, she then cleared her throat and continued. "Good work everyone, now I need you all to form a line, come up and pick off ONE Norandola bean," she said emphasising the one. "Do NOT, under any circumstances dilly dally and touch them all. Find one, and touch only that one. Once you have your bean, take it back to your desk and get a feel for it. Touch it, feel it, but most importantly tap it with your wand." She demonstrated by picking one off very carefully. Making sure not to touch any others. With her wand in her right hand, she tapped the bean gently. "The longer you touch it, the deeper the connection, the tap of your wand will be sufficient enough to form the connection, but the experience will be more rewarding if you give your bean a little TLC."
"Once you've one this, place your bean in the hole, cover it up, water it and fertilise it. We have some fresh dragon dung here."
With a swish of her wand in the direction of the blackboard, the letters began to morph and rearrange themselves into directions.
"After you have completed the task you may be dismissed, and take your Norandola with you... you will need it for the homework assignment."
Now... she could plant her own Norandola. Cradling the bean in her palm, Seren contemplated waiting till later to do so.

So now they got to pick out their own seeds/beans... Walking up to the front and waiting in line to pick her bean, Lily's mind wandered. But soon it was her turn. "I'll take... that one!" she said before picking up one and only one bean. Carefully Lily made her way back to her station, holding the bean in her hands, making sure that she didn't trip on her way back to her seat.

Satisfied he had spent enough time with his personal seed before he was to give it a new home in his pot, Gideon set it down ever so momentarily on his parchment filled with notes. The fifth year needing to use both his gloved hands to dig out a little more of a hole then he had originally so it was a better fit for his charge. And he certainly didn't want to risk dropping it in the process. He then gingerly lifted his chosen seed back up and set it down in the dirt, covering it up and lightly patting it down.
