It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Minerva followed the class into the dark. She hated the dark and it brought her anxiety back. She calmly breathed until there was a glow that helped them see. She wasn't sure what the tree was so she decided to just listen to the answers of the other students.
Eino tried to take notes as best as he could given the darkness and humidity. He paused to follow the students around into the next station, and once they arrived he resumed. Once he was done, and Professor Bentley posed a question, Eino raised his hand. "It's not," he began as he leaned forward and squinted his eyes, "the tree that is glowing, or it is? It seems like some fungi have grown on it, which is much more likely since a wide variety of them tend to emit a glow of that hue." With that being said, Eino still couldn't quite identify the plant, but he raised his arm once again and gave it a shot. "Could it be fairy fire?" Though that was a rather vague answer, since it was more like a category, it was a small category of plants, and it would be near impossible to identify them in this darkness.
Jezzabelle just wanted to throw her hands up in frustration. She couldn't recall this plant off the top of her head and she had read a lot of books on plants. She stared at it and stared at and stared at it, all the while hoping that the plant didn't take any offense to her staring at it. Oh, but why could she not remember this plant. It was a small tree like plant with low flames. Almost like it was burning... the only plant she could think of with such magical properties was... All this pressure was kind of killing her...just a little.
Raising her hand Jezzabelle said, "that would possibly be Dittany.." But she was unsure. And if it was, Professor Bentley did say she didn't want the history on the plant so she just left it at that.

Alex wrinkled his eyebrows. He'd only read about these plants and never seen one in person, so he wasn't sure if it was THE plant he was thinking of. He was pretty sure it was, but it was the fire-ish stuff that threw him off. He'd only ever read of it producing vapors, not real fire, or WAS it real fire? Uggh. Confusing. Still, he raised his hand.
"I believe that's dittany, isn't it professor?" he answered.

Selena nodded as the professor spoke, watching as the ivy crept around, just slightly. Well, creeping ivy could accidentally choke someone and trip people, so she wasn't going to trust them too much. She was still watching the ivy when she heard Professor Bentley to follow her. She directed her attention to the professor and followed her deeper into the greenhouse. She wondered what was there... more ivy? Devil's snare?
However, as she continued to follow the professor, it was clear that they were not going to be seeing Devil Snare because of the light. Which was good because she didn't want to be stuck in a plant that wanted to kill people - that was just scary. The plant seemed to be more like a bush than a tree and there were a few flames flickering off of it. She tried to recall the name of such a plant but she seemed to draw a blank.
What was it?
"Is it a fire seed bush?" Selena asked, looking at it. Because she wasn't sure. A fire seed bush was constantly on fire, so could it be it? Selena watched as the flames continued to flicker, a bit unsure of her answer.

Elise silently followed the class into the dark, stopping when everyone else did at the foot of what seemed like a burning bush. Smiling, she answered. She knew this one.
"The plant is called the 'Burning Bush'," she said. "It's also known as dittany."
"Mmm yes, you're sort of on the right track. Some plants do thrive on sunlight and seek it out, much like this ivy, but then there are plants that do not like the sunlight." The idea was there... she just needed to organise her thoughts.
-------------------
Taking a moment to let herself breathe... Seren wondered if she should go back to basics. Swatting away some of the creeping ivy that was attempting to entangle itself in her hair, she took a small step forward to place some distance between them.
"So I have mentioned previously, this is not a devils snare... it is merely creeping ivy.... now many of you were on the right track as to why the greenhouse has little light. Firstly, because our creeping ivy friend here is very fond of light an so it makes itself available to it by climbing the glass walls. Now the thing you should be considering is what use do we have for a greenhouse with little light. Seeing as most plants require sunlight to grow..."
Seren paused briefly to let this information sink in. Hopefully the students had their listening hats on now. "Many of you were able to tell me that some plants are sensitive to light and therefore prefer dark and often damp conditions, and this is correct. But aside from that, darkness also impacts some plants and trees by influencing their behaviour, calming them down so to speak."
"Today I want us to have a look at a couple of different plants... not the ivy." She gave them all a look. The ivy played its role in here... keeping things dark, but now it was time to check out the main attraction for the day.
"Now if you'll all follow me please, keep close, and try not to walk into each other... and don't touch anything unless I say so." It was dark after all, and they were going deeper into the greenhouse.
The darkness began to intensify as they made their way deeper, but then soon began to glow a warm redish-orange.
After walking some way down a path, with pots and flowerbeds of plants skirting the area with the occasional rustling of leaves, Seren came to a halt. The strange glow seemed to be coming from a small, old, leafless looking tree. At the base of the tree a few low flames can be seen flickering to indicate a burning.
"Can anybody identify this particular plant?" she asked. "Simply name it, I don't need to know its entire history."
OOC: Lesson will resume in approximately 12 hours.
Plants that liked the dark, and plants that liked the light..Well, that certainly narrowed it down, right? Not! She looked around the room, eyeing the few vines warily as she did so, trying to listen to her classmates answers, some of them had as much as she did in guess about the vine thing...
She then turned her attention back to Professor Bentley just as she was summarizing everyone else's answers. Then she announced that they were going deeper into the greenhouse, which well, scared the life out of her truth be told.
Going deeper into the dark abyss filled with magic ivy that could grab you by the ankles and drag you off to Merlin knows where -- No thank you!
But, before she could protest, the resto f the class had already moved forward until all they could see was a sort of redish glow that seemed to grow brighter with each step that they take, until they came to a stop in front of a sickly looking tree which was burning? Weird.
"Could it be a fire seed bush, Professor?" She guessed as she glanced back at the plant before turning back to Professor Bentley once more. It would make sense you know...since it looked liked it was burning...but it could also be dittany, but everyone else had already beat her to it. Meh.
Apologies for the long windedness. *blush* Hint taken :D

Merlin she needed a tea.
Recovering from the shock of the mushy minded students--perhaps too many chocolate frogs over the holidays, Seren braced herself to reply.
SPOILER!!: Responses
"Mm yes, certainly some cannot stand sunlight."
"Yes certainly, good good."
"Certainly some plants don't like it."
"Some might die, but for most it would just make them rather ill."
Uhhh... ".. umm no, not quite." And it wasn't THAT dark, yet.
She for one would not want to be stuck in a greenhouse without vision... even with her fondness of flesh-eaters. Seren most certainly preferred seeing them.
"Nope, it's just ivy dear... but certainly some plants cannot tolerate sunlight."
"Nope... it's just regular wizarding creeping ivy. But certainly some plants require little to no sunlight."
... did the Ravenclaw just contradict herself? "Perhaps you need to gather your thoughts."
"Yes, very good."
"Yes very good, sunlight has the ability to make some plants rather ill."
"Yes very good," she began to say... and then the Ravenclaw blurt out a bunch of numbers which really weren't necessary.
"Interesting thought, and yes some plants are very shy which is why they're seldom seen." ... and because they hide in the dark.
Was she talking about a specific plant?... "Light does have the ability to kill plants, but for the most part it would just make them ill."
"Mmm yes, you're sort of on the right track. Some plants do thrive on sunlight and seek it out, much like this ivy, but then there are plants that do not like the sunlight." The idea was there... she just needed to organise her thoughts.
... again. She hadn't asked to identify the plant.
"Low light yes, good good."
"That might be the case with some, but not for the creeping ivy, it's rather docile whether its in sunlight or darkness."
"Mm no, but there are plants that light up, so you're on the right track."
This students answer confused her a bit. Escaping? take up much space?... "Yes the ivy is covering the window, but why might this be a good thing?" What use is a greenhouse without sunlight?
"Very good."
Another student to contradict themselves. If the ivy was light sensitive, then why would it expose itself to light by getting closer to it? "Mm not quite, think about it a little more."
Merlin this girl talked too much. Seren tried not to tune out, struggling to pay attention. "... uuhh yes, some plants are sensitive to sunlight."
Good, right, moving on.
... light house? they were in a light house? "I think you mean greenhouse dear, and yes you're right."
"
"Yes that's right, though you're wrong about the ivy, it is especially fond of light, hence why it makes itself so available to it by climbing the walls."
Ooohh, if someone knew her well enough? Well he wasn't wrong. "Yes absolutely correct."
"Yes very good." ... of course it wasn't so much that yes, the ivy was blocking the light, but why you would want a greenhouse without light.
... no it was not devils snare... didn't students pay attention. "It's creeping ivy dear, nothing more."
But at least she was sort of on the right track. "The ivy itself is definitely attracted to sunlight, but what about the other plants in here?"
"That's a possibility, good answer."
Finally something out of the box!
"Mmhhmm, good good."
"Yes, very good."
"Indeed many of them would. Most of the plants in this greenhouse are sensitive to light, and therefore too much sunlight would make them ill and yes they would certainly be burnt and dehydrated."
"Yes, very good Kennedy."
.... Merlin.
"It's creeping ivy dear... and we're not discussing the plant, we are discussing why the greenhouse is dark.. what use could we have for a greenhouse with little or no light?"
Pay... attention...
"No dear, we've established it's creeping ivy... the question was why is the greenhouse dark? what use is a dark greenhouse?"
Seren raised an eyebrow. Ma'am? again.. she didn't comment. "Yes certainly, some plants prefer the darkness."
"Yes very good."
He seemed to get the gist of it.
Eino's answer appeared to be well thought out, but he was sort of missing the point. Perhaps he has been neglecting his studies somewhat. "The ivy is certainly rather fond of sunlight, hence why it's making itself so available to it by climbing the surface of the greenhouse. But I want you to think about why we would allow it to do so. If plants thrive in sunlight, then what does it mean for the other inhabitants of this greenhouse?"
"Yes very good."
Seren eyed the enthusiastic girl and then eyes the ivy.. "That is true... but not for the ivy, though it is certainly applicable to many of the other plants in this greenhouse."
Again it seemed as though Alyssa was reading from her diary or something.... did she ever stop to breathe?
Having had difficulty keeping up with the girls speech, Seren did manage to hone in on a part of it. "Absolutely, some plants, particularly various species of flesh eating trees have the tendency to be a bit... abrasive in the sunlight, so the darkness can be utilised to manage plant behaviour."
"Mm yes certainly."
"Yes, very good."
"No dear, like I said, it's just creeping ivy, the question was why is it dark in here? so how would be benefit from a greenhouse without sunlight."
... "try to keep up."
"A couple of them might be," she said with a nod. She wouldn't say for certain... not wanting to scare anyone just yet.
Again? not the plant!
"No dear, it's just regular wizarding creeping ivy... the question was why is it dark in here? so what use would we have for a greenhouse without light?"
Seren couldn't help but laugh lightly. Yes, very blunt, but yes. "And how might this be a good thing?"
Creepy? ... as in creepy creepy? or creepy as in creeping? .. odd.
"Yes, certainly some plants don't do well with sunlight, and it may effect their temperament."
"Mmm no... the ivy thrives on sunlight, though the other plants do not."
"Yes, that's correct, though in most cases it would just make the plants very ill."
"Yes very good, though most of them would live for quite a while in the sunlight, though they would be quite ill."
"Yes, very good."
... "No, the ivy is very fond of sunlight, though the other inhabitants of the greenhouse do not."
"Nice try though."
The ONLY... oh no no no... "I'm afraid you're wrong there, devils snare is not the ONLY vine plant that cannot handle sunlight, I suggest you do some more research before you make such assumptions."
"But yes... some plants do not do well with sunlight."
..."Not a bad idea, but no. The ivy is very docile, in full light and low light. Though the principle may certainly be applied to some of the other inhabitants of this greenhouse."
"Yes, good good."
... Seren looked at the ivy again. Why did everyone assume they were talking about the ivy? ...
"No dear, the ivy is very fond of sunlight, but certainly other plants may not get on so well with sunlight."
... die?...
"Yes some would certainly die, though you'll find that most would simply be ill for an extensive period of time."
"Yes, very good."
Again with the ivy...
"The ivy thrives in sunlight, hence why it's made itself so available to it by climbing the window panes, however you are right in that by decreasing the light in the greenhouse, you also decrease the temperature and some plants do prefer the dark, cool and damp conditions."
....
"The ivy is fond of sunlight, which is why it has made itself so available to it by climbing the window panes... but yes it is all about ecosystems and maintaining the natural order. So the other inhabitants of this greenhouse are less fond of sunlight, hence why it is dark."
... got there in the end.
"Mmm it's not the reason, but certainly some would glow in the dark."
"Yes, very good Sierra."
... again another two with the devils snare!
Merlin help her!
"Pay attention please... we are not identifying the plant... which is simply creeping ivy. The question was why is the greenhouse dark? meaning what benefits could there be for the plants within it?"
.."Not these ones per se, but certainly some sappling require more down time than others, just as some require longer periods of hibernation than others."
"Very good Kurumi."
"Yes very good... though no, this is just creeping ivy dear.. nothing like a devils snare."
"All very good points."
alchemist_18 and DanialRadFAN01 (not quoting because I'm already replying)
"Yes very good... both are solid answers."

Alyssa followed the Professor as she led them further into the greenhouse until they stood in front of her small, old, flickering leafless tree which seemed to have low flames flickering at the base of the tree. Alyssa stared at the tree, mesmerized by the flames until she realized that the Professor had asked a question. Alyssa looked at the plant and immediately raised her hand. She realized that she may have seen the plant once before. It was growing in her grandfather's greenhouse back home. Her grandfather was a Healer. "Professor, Please correct me if I'm wrong but is this plant a Dittany plant also known as the Burning Bush? The Dittany is used in potions because of its healing restorative properties."

Ira looked at the small almost lifeless tree, mesmerized by the low flames at the base. How was this possible without the flames burning the tree bark? This was something new!
But she had no idea which tree it was! She hadn't even known that such a tree was even present! So she just listened as others answered. Most of them told about a tree called Dittany. Wasn't that used in making some potions? Whatever, she decided to just keep quiet and waited for the lesson to proceed
"It appears to be Dittany Professor," Amelia responded confidently after taking a good look at the plant. It was easy enough to identify if one knew their Herbology. She was also bolstered by the fact that she was not the only person to think that's what the plant was.
Carigan shivered even though it was fairly warm in the greenhouse. She wasn't used to seeing magical plants and the odd glow of the plant they were looking at sort of gave her the creeps. She didn't know what kind of plant it was so she kept her mouth shut and waited to listen to find out the real answer.
Kennedy followed Professor Bentley and the class deeper into the greenhouse. He found himself sometimes squinting at the ground and avoiding people's feet. When they came to a stop he adjusted his glasses and stared at the plant before them.
What was that? He scanned his brain for information and remembered something about... something. He raised his hand and said, "Dittany?" He wasn't 100% sure, but he did follow the rules. He gave the name, just as Pretty Bentleyshe had asked for.

Well, this was all very interesting... Sort of. Ellie didn't really like Herbology. Which is why she didn't get the question entirely right. Pout. But she followed the professor and the rest of the class deeper into the greenhouse, being careful not to step on anyone's toes or touch any plant nearby.
Then they approached a glowing bush plant thingy. It was kind of pretty, but Ellie hadn't the slightest clue as to what it was. Until people started saying Dittany. Ellie looked around and felt a little stupid. She apparently didn't know her plants very well.
Cough. "That's Dittany. I believe... Professor." Cough.
Janice followed Professor to the depths of the greenhouse. Janice had never thought that Greenhouse Two could be this big, judging from the size when it I lookd from the out side. The Unetected Extension Charm would have done the job. Then, the group came to a halt when Professor indicated the students to name a plant.
That is definitely Dittany, Janice thought. The essence of dittany heals cuts. She knew that by her own personal experience, and those experience hurt. A lot.
"That's Dittany, isn't it, Professor?" She said after raising her hand.

Adam followed Professor Bently to where she had walked an then shortly after stopped in her step. He strained his neck to see the plant his Professor was pointing at an asking her students what they thought it could be.
The plant was burning some fumes, with a glowing color behind it. What could it be? Adam was not sure on what type of plant it could be, after all he was no expert, that job was for Professor Bently. But he began to look around an heard several students answering with Dittany.
"Di-Di-Dittany, maybe, Professor?" He spoke up nervously, as he glanced around the greenhouse some more. Adam made a mental note to hit the books as soon as he got a chance in the common room.

Doing as she was told, Nora followed professor Bentley and the others and, thankfully, managed not to step on anyone's feet. She didn't touch anything either, and she wouldn't have even if the professor hadn't told them so. Nope, she didn't want any creepy plant to wiggle around her feet or arms.
But as they faced... something, the girl stopped to think, but she couldn't recognize the... whatever it was. So she remained silent as others kept offering answers.

Sophie calmly followed Professor Bentley with the other students. The only reason she wasn't looking around excitedly as she normally would was because, well, her mother had greenhouses back at home and she was used to seeing all sorts of weird plants all the time. She still thought some were quite pretty though. She did like to stare at the pretty ones. But just to stare, no touching.
Sophie was more interested in her fellow students than in the actual plants around her. She couldn't see the plant Professor Bentley was talking about because a lot of other students were in front of her, but she didn't bother to try and see it. "Burning Bush, maybe." she thought. Glowing area, some other people mumbling something about dittany and whatnot. Yeah, that was probably it. She almost made a disgusted face when she thought about tea. "Blargh. Oh! Pretty flowers!" She liked pretty flowers. Sophie smirked and finally tried to see the plant, but she still couldn't do it.
From afar, he can see the flickering flame on the base of the ground. Although he was curious, he made sure Sam was near him so the little boy won't get squished by elder students. The flame illuminated the plant and gave Hades a clearer look.
It couldn't possibly be dittany, as most of the others said. Hades had an idea what it was, but he can't guarantee its preciseness. "Fire seed bush, ma'am," answered Hades after putting up his hand. That explained the flame.

Zhenya had to try standing on her tippitoes to see over the taller students in front. She finally caught a glimpse of the plant Professor Bentley had been talking about. She also felt silly for completely missing her comment on the creeping ivy not being Devil's Snare.
She frowned for a moment thinking, trying to remember what it was. "Professor might that be Dittany? Or Fire Seed Bush?" she said, losing her confidence.

Gideon was listening to what was being said, wanting to be table to jot down notes later on when he was more readily able to. As Professor Bentley instructed them to follow her, he did so obediantly with the rest of the class as they made their way further and further into the recesses of the darkened greenhouse. Finaly they came to a spot or more correctly a plant....THE plant they were apparently to study today. Or at least one of them.
He heard the answers of his classmates, the two most common being dittany and fireseed bush. Really? Were either of those true? Neither is a tree for dittany was a rare plant or herb and the fireseed was as its name implied...a bush.
"Is it a wiggen tree?" Gideon finally asked after raising his hand.
[...] "Now if you'll all follow me please, keep close, and try not to walk into each other... and don't touch anything unless I say so." It was dark after all, and they were going deeper into the greenhouse.
YES! His answer had been correct. Go him!
Smiling to himself, Lewis looked up in surprise when Professor Bentley told them to follow her someplace else. Why would he touch anything unless asked to? And of course they would be trying not to bump into each other. Obviously. Not that her saying it would prevent them from accidentally bumping into each other.
The fact that the farther they walked the darker it got was a little unsettling and Lewis started kneading his gloved hands together nervously. Finally they seemed to be getting closer to some source of light...and just a hint of warmth? When they finally came to a halt, Lewis had been so busy looking for said source that he DID bump into the person walking in front of him - despite Bentley's warning. "Sorry." He muttered quietly, and took a quick step back.
Oh they had done this last year hadn't they? That tree, it looked familiar. It was something with D at the beginning. D...Dill? No, that was a cooking ingredient. Di- "Dittany?" Lewis offered, quite uncertain of his answer, but raising his hand nonetheless.
