It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
He walked closer to the boy so that he could see his face properly. The boy was taller than him. Zack looked up and said "Hey, I'm Zack. I'm in the first year." he said and stood next to him.
Zack didn't want to lose points in the class for his mischievousness as he did in the Muggle School. He didn't want his parents to come and talk to the principal here in Hogwarts, who knows what they did to student who misbehaved. He didn't want to get in anymore trouble.
More and more people were arriving and - of course - coming to stand with the rest of them. Which meant Lewis was surrounded by other students. Oh, the joys of being part of a group. He was pretty sure he had spotted a familiar face or two but that was about it, and none of them were anywhere close to him.
Then all of a sudden there was a boy next to him. Talking to him. "Good." Lewis replied the first thing that come to his mind. Why was he introducing himself?! This was a lesson after all. Oh, did he expect him to do the same?! Half-opening his mouth - still undecided - he was glad to hear the professor speaking up. Saved by the bell. Or you know, the professor's voice.

"Now before we start I hope you have all familiarised yourselves with the class rules and I hope you all have your gloves with you. If not, please take this time to grab a pair from the stores cupboard," she said indicated the cupboard near the door opposite her.
She paused briefly to allow time for those students to get settled. "Now a few of you have asked about this ivy that is growing on the window panes... and for the record, they won't harm you, though they may attempt to wrap themselves around your ankles or your fingers should you allow them to." She gave a few of the leaves another gentle stroke as they reached out to her.
"Now before we move deeper into the greenhouse, does anybody have any idea as to why there is little light in here?"
Professor Bentley seemed nice. And he was pretty sure she was also one of the few not involved in the pranks at the start of term feast. So that was definitely a plus.
Gloves: Check. Yes, he had actually checked them off a list Valerie had made for him a few years ago. So that he would never forget anything for his Herbology classes. Pulling them out of his bag, Lewis put them on, just in case they were expected to touch the plants right away or anything. The part about the ivy wrapping themselves around their ankles was a little unsettling after all.
Oh, first question. After a short moment of contemplation, he raised a glove-covered hand and said, "Well, I assume there's something in here that doesn't like bright light." Whether that was the professor herself or the plants he didn't know.
Right, Janice thought. Low light intensity. Apparantly, about each everyone of us had noticed that. Or maybe... She raised her hand and answered.
"Professor, are the low light intensity nescessary for the plant's 'personal' needs? I mean, the Devil's Snare needs to be kept in the dark because it 'sulks in the sun'--" she motioned that quotation mark sign with her hands "--and other plants need sunlight to make food and stuff. So I'm guessing that they need the dark, or at least they can't be kept at the presence of abundant sunlight, because they will wilt."
Eh? That was the exact question he wanted to ask her. Why indeed? But then, the question was directed back at them. If Bentley said they should allow the ivy to wrap around the students, then it was confirmed it wasn't a Devil's Snare. Because it was rather dark and his view was blocked by other students in front, Hades can't determine what the plants were.
The light were little, but it was there. So basically, they still needed light. Now, this he didn't know. He glanced over to Sam and lifted his shoulder at the younger boy. Perhaps some fresh minds can help.
Even though she knew so little about plants, Gwen tried to pay attention to everything the Profesor said. Oooo- first question and I am already puzzled. Nice going!, she 'congratulated' herself. Let's see- possible reasons why there's little light. Because some of the plants don't need so much light?!'They are eiter sensitive or...umm... ', the Ravenclaw started saying, but suddenly stopped, thinking that she would amaze Bentley with her stupidity and lack of knowledge when it came to Herbology.
'Or maybe some of them, similar to the plants under water, they prefer little light?' That was the best she ould come up with. However, Gwen remembered reading something about the kind of light some plants prefered, red or green, but the question wasn't about color- but of the intensity. Bummer.
Suddenly, she remembered having read about the light intensity. 'For most plants, it should be between 50.000 and 100.000 Lux, but some of them, depending where they come from, can make photosynthesis even when it is lower...?'Was that even correct? And- from where do I even know this? Merlin's beard...

Yep, Kimalia remembered to bring her gloves.. It was an outdoors class afterward. Sighing in relief at hearing the Ivy wasn't dangerous, just too loveable.. Is that what the Professor meant?
Taking a few moments to ponder the question, she rose her hand. "Is it because they're too shy?" She could've sworn there was some passage where it hinted at plants having feelings. "Since most plants do thrive on sun, they probably don't care too much for a nice tan."

Amethyst raised her hand slightly, after looking at the plant. It was similar to the Devil's Snasre, but not quite. "Because the plant grows in the dark. Light would kill the plant."

"Yes, I did professor!" She replied brightly, she was about to go on this particularly long telling of how she tried but failed to help her mother with her flowers, but caught how the Professor checked her watch. The plants were not dangerous? Somehow, Cass simply couldn't comprehend that simple fact. She watched as Professor Bentley sort of affectionately stroked the vines around her, but then she was a Herbology professor...plants love her!
Students on the other hand...well, let's just say she didn't want to know what would happen if ever any of them wrapped themselves around her ankles...she would probably freak, or worse, faint from fright. Any of the two options didn't seem nice.
"Maybe because the plants are light sensitive?" She answered uncertainly "or maybe they didn't like light, like Devil's Snare - as Kurumi answered earlier." She added, could there be another possibility, but she wasn't totally sure about it "or maybe the darkness sort of helps the vines to grow longer." Like that lima bean plant that she had accidentally left inside the storage room two summers ago, it's stem became longer than the average plant...but then the leaves also turned this sickly shade of yellow, so that was a bit of a bust "maybe I mean, a plant would continue to grow, trying to look for sunlight, wouldn't it? Maybe it's the same case with the vines..." She could also remember a discussion they once had concerning plants that flourish during the evenings, but the memory was already vague and she was pretty sure it involved something about the moon...and last time she checked, there was no moon in sight.
Turning to examine the nearby ivy, Ivory couldn't resist a grin. Her name's sake. Well, at least her nick-name's sake. Observing the characteristics of it and the way it was growing on the window panes as she tugged on her gloves, the brunette paused for a moment before speaking. Wouldn't it mean if it was growing on the window panes that it was attempting to get closer to the sunlight? Or was it more of a defense mechanism to keep the larger body of the plant shielded?
Turning around she peered into the waiting darkness of the greenhouse and turned a questioning glance back to the creeping vine in question. If the question was being asked, logically the growth and vitality of the plant required lesser amounts of sunlight. Raising her hand, Ivory voiced her thoughts. "Maybe the plants for study today are low-light foliage plants." Her eye concentrating on how the leaves reached out to the Professor, she continued. "A magical cousin of the mundane Ivy plant perhaps, or cousin to the Devil's Snare." Unless the ivy was merely to obscure the light for something that required more darkness... Casting a small glance backwards again, she tried not to think of all the dangerous plant life that thrived in the dark.
Salima raised her hand then said 'Is it because light helps keep them calm like you said "they may attempt to wrap themselves around your ankles or your fingers should you allow them to." Meaning if it were dark they would wrap themselves around you with force... If you understand the point I am trying to get at...' She then looked over at the ivy wondering what this plant could be.
Pam thought about this for a moment. It had to do with some plant that needs little light. Or maybe there's a plant the actually lights up. Thus, there wouldnt be a need for light. Was there such a plant? That would be cool. But she didn't want to bring it up if there wasn't an actual plant. But she didn't care. She raised her hand. "is there a plant that lights up when watered?"
Autumn looked up from the plants at professor, she had read a bit about hebology, she raised up her hand and waited untiul the previous student had submitted there answer "Umm professor is it because some plants are covering the windows? also some plants are sensitive to light and they grow towars the light, so you dont want them escaping or taking up to much space." autumn rememberd the 'grow towards' part from her muggle lessons, she imagined the cells of the plants would still be based the same.
Presley grabbed her gloves out of her bag, and set it off to the side. No reason for an expensive backback to get covered in plants and stuff. She raised her hand at the question, feeling a little proud for actually knowing something about the question. That hardly evver happened in Herbology. "The plants you are growing in here may be light-sensitive. That is, they grow best in a certain lighting, in this case, rather dim or shady." That's why her mum had always planted hellbore in the north corner of the garden.
As professor continued welcoming the other students, Ira took out her new dragon hide gloves she had brought in summer. She wore them and waited for the class to start..
Ira watched fascinated, how the ivy reached out to professor as she stroked it tenderly. They seemed to actually welcome her touch and did not seem much dangerous to her. But still, she couldn't bear to think them wrapped around her ankles. So better to keep a safe distance from them.. at least as much as possible!
From the time Ira had entered the greenhouse, she had kept thinking as to why it was dark. Wasn't light very much necessary for important plant processes like photosynthesis? Without light, food can't be prepared in plants, right? So she raised her hand up and answered, "Professor, maybe because ivy doesn't like sunlight?" Then knowing how stupid her answer sounded, she added, "I mean, are they sensitive to light? That is, direct sunlight harms them? And so maybe they just need limited sunlight, enough for photosynthesis." or it could be that professor didn't want the plant to grow now, but that seemed highly improbable seeing that she was a Herbology professor who loved her plants!

"Morning dear, thank you and it's good to see you too... glad you could make it."
"Morning Pam dear," she replied.
"Good morning Daichi, I had a splendid summer, thanks for asking."
She would have struck up a short conversation... but it was about time to start the lesson.
Right... well that was about all of them yes? Good.

Alyssa thought for awhile and considered the various plants in the greenhouse. The Greenhouse was usually lit well, so the Professor must have added a plant in here that was sensitive to the light. So Alyssa raised her hand,"Professor could it be because some of the plants here are sensitive to light or react in the opposite way when exposed to light. Like Devil's Snare. It prefers dank and dark places and when exposed to heat and light will retreat and hide.
There could also be other plants here that thrive better in the dark. Too much exposure to light, and they end up with light lesions on their leaves. In fact, there are actually some plants that lack chlorophyll, or the green color that is typical in plant life, for example some fungi and algae, and they live in the dark entirely. Professor, it is true that all plants need dark periods to grow? Many plants need to undergo oxygen respiration in the dark, as well as regain water that they lost during the day" Alyssa asked the Professor. She first that her answer was correct. She knew that the Professor hadn't asked for questions at this time, but Alyssa thought that she would include that question in just to verify her answer.

Ella watched as the other students shared their answers with the professor. They seemed pretty confident when sharing their ideas and Ella was eager to keep up. She thought hard about the question: Does anybody have any idea as to why there is little light in here? From her experiences in the garden with her mom, Ella knew that different plants needed different amounts of light. She wondered whether most of the plants in this particular greenhouse were light sensitive. "Professor, I wonder if maybe the plants in this light house grow best with little direct sunlight?"

When professor Bentley mentioned the gloves, Nora almost started to freak out that she might not have brought hers, but she felt much better when she found them in her bag. She didn't know if they had to put them on yet, but she put them on anyway, just to be sure, especially after she heard that the ivy might wrap around her.
As for the lack of light... the first thing that crossed her mind was that she was more than happy because the greenhouse was not brightly lit, so she could properly wake up. Her eyes would only hurt if she faced more light so quickly.
Banishing away that thought, she raised her hand. "Some plants don't really need or like light, and my only guess is that this ivy doesn't either." And nor did she.
Right... well that was about all of them yes? Good.

Kendra had already put her thick gloves on before the teacher had asked, remembering them from the morning. They easily reached up to her elbows and were a few sizes too big for her. Room for when you grow. had been the words her mother had spoken when Kendra had protested.
When the teacher spoke, Kendra didn't know the answer so remained quiet. Listening to the others around her.

Keefer glanced about. Now that his eyes were adjusted to the gloom rather than the bright September sunlight outside, he noticed that the greenhouse looked rather good. Last term it had been a war zone. But the Busy Bee looks to have done the job! It's pretty much back to normal in here. He noted this with pride, both in himself and his fellow Herbologists.
Well, the obvious answer to Bentley's question was that the ivy covering the windows was blocking the light. But that couldn't be what she was looking for. Everything about the greenhouse was the way it was for the benefit of the plants. So that must mean...
"Professor," he began, both hands in the air. "If I know you, then you've arranged the greenhouse exactly as it needs to be in order to help the plants inside thrive. So there must be plants in here that do not like lots of direct or indirect sunlight, or perhaps the heat caused by them. The most obvious candidate is, of course, Devil's Snare, which thrives in a dark, damp environment."

Harvey looked around at the ivy when the Professor mentioned it.. and then she asked a question to which everyone had good answers and he loved Herbology so he wanted to participate even if it had been said.. he put up his hand "Well Professor.. the obvious reason maybe all this ivy that is crawling up the glass panels but also as everyone said there maybe some plants in this greenhouse that do not react well to direct light or direct sunlight or there maybe some plants that thrive in a bit of darkness " he said as he remembered the Joint lesson with Astronomy that he had attended.. he loved herbology more than he had anticipated last year and he knew this year was going to be no different..

"Yes, good... but there's a bit more to it than that." Really she was looking for some creativity.
But clearly someone wasn't paying attention. Seren eyed the Slytherin girl.

Gwen pulled on her gloves, listening closely to what everyone around her was saying.
Light-sensitive plants?
All she knew about that was that sunflowers turned to the sun.
Devil's Snare could be dangerous, couldn't it? And the Professor had said the ivy wasn't dangerous. Then again, it depended on what Professor Bentley considered dangerous. Gwen raised her hand.
"It can't Devil's Snare, can it? Devil Snare is dangerous." Then she added, quietly and lowering her eyes, "I think...", unsure if what she saying was completely wrong.
She suddenly had and idea. "Maybe the plants are going towards the sunlight, which is why the glass of the greenhouse is covered in it?"
Aurora thought, frowning slightly. She had neglected her studies this summer to cram on her theory lessons and all that she could remember had already been said. Unless... "Other than what's been said," she started. "Could it be to do with animals? Ones that help the plant to thrive." Like the biting toadstools and the pixies.
Jordan thought about the question professor Bentley asked and but was unable to come up with that would seem likely. Then she raised her her hand and said, Professor could it be because these plants may not need as much light to survive?"
