Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson One

Herbology Lesson One

It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.

Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive.
"Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.

Lesson Progression:

Why is there little light in this greenhouse?
What plant is this? (identify only)
What are fire seeds used for?
Do you have any questions?
What care requirements do we need to consider?
Practice the incantation.
Practice the wand movement.
The Activity
You may be dismissed when you have finished
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Grabbing a watering can Jezzabelle felt her stomach clench a little. She wasn't really good with spells and charms and all that jazz. She was good with planting things, getting the water from a sink or hose, and then going about her business as such. She grabbed her wand again and felt her hand shake just a little. If she didn't calm herself down something bad was going to happen. It'll be just like Transfiguration all over again and she really didn't want to mess things up here.

Just thinking about the seed helped steady her hand. That's all she needed to do was think about the seed. It needed water and if she didn't calm down enough it wouldn't get the water. Taking a deep cleansing breath she pointed her wand into the can and said, "Aguamenti." Success. She filled it up almost all the way, doubting she would really need all that water. She stopped the water flowing from her wand with finite.

"Chaudensis," she said doing the circular motion yet again. She decided to go ahead and cross off her last step seeing as she was almost complete with it anyway. She just need to wait for the water to boil.
SPOILER!!: "Jezzabelle's Paper

1. Charm pot to heat itself.
2. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up.
3. Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil.
4. Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it).
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.

For boiling water, add water (via aguamenti) to the watering can and heat it. This will ensure you 1. control the temperature and 2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.

She was almost about to aimlessly start doodling on the edges of her paper but the sight of rising steam caught her eye and she looked into the pot to find the water boiling and piping hot.

Pour just a little ever so slowly over the seed she smiled in satisfaction. She was complete and all that was left was the clean up. "Finite," she said allowing for the watering can to stop heating itself. She placed the plant where the professor had indicated and gave it one last wistful look. She would find it no doubt and take care of it and raise it. She removed her goggle and returned all the things she had used to their rightful place. She removed her gloves making a mental note to clean them. Grabbing her things she smiled and wave, "Bye Professor Bentley. It's been a great class." And she left making her way back through the darkened greenhouse.

SPOILER!!: Responses

"You're on the right track, but no we don't use manure for these seeds. Not until they're grown and even then only a minimal amount is required."

Seren nodded, yes obviously location was important for a number of reasons... but it wasn't quite what she was looking for, until..

"Ahh yes, certainly, the key is too keep the seed hot enough beneath the ground."

Erm..
"Well, yes, those are important, but I was asking about plant care not people safety." They had rules in place for that.

"It's generally a good idea to cool the seeds down before handling it, but in this case it would just place the seed at risk of not germinating."

Extinguish the fire?
Seren eyed her prefect. "Uhhh no, I wouldn't recommend that, the seed needs to be alight in order to survive and grow.... putting out the fire will only kill it."

"Ahh good point Kurumi, we most certainly do use water, but there's a trick to it, which we will get to,"
she said with a wink.

"You're on the right track, we don't actually fertilise fire seeds until they have germinated, and as for water, there's a special trick with that," she replied brightly.

"Sort of... we do use water, but there's a trick to keeping the seed active."

"Mm yes, that's why we have classroom rules, but I was thinking more along the lines of caring for the seed..." because plants were more important than students?

"Yes, excellent!"

"That's an interesting... and seemingly logical thought, though no, we do use water."

"Yes, that would be a very good idea..."
following rules was sort of essential to not being kicked out of the classroom... but it still hadn't really answered her question. "I was asking more for what would benefit the seeds."

"Yes, I'm sure fire seeds... like others wouldn't appreciate being stepped on."
... Interesting response.

"Yes very good, temperature is something we definitely need to consider with these beauties."

"Yes, place is important, obviously fire seed bushes prefer dark, damp and more enclosed places."

... clearly. Or had the child not read the class rules before?
"I was asking for from a caring for the seed or plant perspective."

Another SAFETY issue... "well yes dear, but I was asking how do we care for the seed or plant... not what's around it."

"That's an interesting point, but no we do use water... only there's a trick to it." Which they were going to learn today... obviously.

"You're sort of on the right track. Certainly the fire seed benefits from the darkness, but warm soil is essential for it to grow, as is water."

"Not a bad theory, but surprisingly, no, fire seeds need little nourishment."

"Yes! precisely, maintaining a high enough temperature for the seed to remain active is crucial to its growth."

"Not bad idea, but no... the fire seed requires very little nourishment."

"Nope, not in this case... we don't want to risk extinguishing the seed and thus killing it."

Seren smiled, amused by the idea. "I assure you dear the seed wouldn't be extinguished by moving too fast, the warmth radiates from within... it would take a lot more than a little bit of a breeze for it to burn out."

"Yes, very good."

"Yes, and no... it depends how you define special," she mused.

Resisting the urge to smirk, Seren simply nodded. "Well that is a good idea... I was asking more in terms of caring for the plant though."

"Right so aside from the common sense, follow the classroom rules regarding safety... gloves, goggles etc. there are a number of things we need to consider when planting fire seeds. They are not particularly high maintenance, but there are a few crucial things to remember. The first, is temperature. You do NOT want to extinguish your seed using the Glacius Charm or by drowning it in cold water. Secondly, fire seeds do not require much, if any nourishment... so fertilising is not required." Seren paused to let this information sink in and plant themselves in the students minds. She had a feeling some of them would be pleased to know there wouldn't be any dung involved this lesson.

"Now take a moment to read and note down these instructions, you'll need them soon enough," she said stepping to the side to let the light from the torches shine onto the blackboard.

After waiting a short while for students to write down these notes, Seren stepped forward to continue the lesson.

"Now before I get you to start the process, you first need to know how to perform the Chaudensis Charm. This will charm the pot to heat itself."

"Please DO NOT take out your wands just yet, I want you to practice the incantantion without the risk of blowing something up first..." she said eyeballing them all.

"Repeat after me... Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis..."
Seren observed and listened as the students practiced the incantation.

OOC: Practice the INCANTATION ONLY. Lesson will resume in approximately 12 hours.

Amelia listened intently to what the professor was saying about the other responses to the questions, she didn't want to get hurt or do anything wrong after all. Besides, focusing on the Professor made it easier for her to not focus on the fact that they would be planting fire seeds, and the fact that she was deathly afraid of said seeds.

Taking a small breath Amelia looked at the board when instructed to write down what they would need to do. She quickly scrawled everything down;

Quote:
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.
before double checking to make sure she hadn't missed any of the steps. Once that was done she began to say the charm.

"Chaw-den-sis," she whispered, trying not to distract anybody else with her practicing. She sounded it out a few more times before saying the word without it being drawn out slowly. "Chaudensis," yep, it sounded right to her ears and so she felt confident that when it came to heating the pot she'd be able to do so.

Everything sounded good to her.

"Alright everyone, now we're going to practice the wand movement."
She watched them all... that's right wands out. Keep with it!

Holding her own wand in front of her she bent her hand at the wrist so her wand was directed at the ground. "Now you want a smooth rotation, remember to bend at the wrist, there is no need to move your whole hand... a little too much force and the charm could go horribly wrong. Please aim your wand away from your feet and DO NOT repeat the incantation as you do so... we are ONLY doing to wand movement at this stage, you can perform the two together in the next step."
Seren continued to demonstrate by rotating her wand in a circular fashion, as if tracing a circle.

...

OOC: Hey! Just practice the wand movement ONLY for the time being, the lesson will resume in approx 12 hours with the practical activity. Thanks!

Wand movement time. Great.

Amelia removed her wand from it's holster and carefully imitated the professors movements. She made sure not to be too forceful in her rotation. She didn't want to have any accidents after all and if she weren't careful that could very well be a reality.

She repeated the wand movement four more times before she decided that she would be ready to perform the charm whenever the professor said they could actually get planting.

SPOILER!!: instructions

"Ahh good question Jezzabelle, in fact, have two points."

"The direction of the motion doesn't matter, as we're simply going to be tracing the inside perimeter of the pot, so as long as your motion is smooth and connects, then the charm will work."

Cow?

0_______o

"Uhh what cow?" she asked a little perplexed. How on earth had the boy come to the conclusion of... cow... in the incantation? Chaudensis... there was nothing cow-like about it at all.

"Chaudensis dear... chaw-den-sis."

Well on the whole it looked as though the students were getting along quite nicely. While they continued practicing the wand movement, Seren summoned a box of goggles--because you could never be too safe, and another small cart of watering cans.

Right, gloves, goggles, cans, pots, soil... SEEDS!

Feeling around in her robes pocket, she plucked out an old silver tin and screwed the top off. Inside where the fire seeds, all hot and red hissed a little as it met more oxygen.

"Alright everyone, I trust you all have your notes ready.." and that they were paying attention.

"First things first, you must perform the charm on your pot... now you will know if it has worked because you will feel the sides begin to warm, it wont be hot, just warm to the touch. Then come up and get your materials and follow the instructions on the board."

Simple, yes?

Tapping her wand on the blackboard once more, another line appeared beneath he instructions.

"So everyone come and claim a pot and goggles and get started. ONLY come for your seed when you need it."

"Also should you wish to mark your pot for whatever reason, feel free to do so." ... because she expected at least SOME of them to visit their seedling as it grew.

OOC: To be eligible for full participation marks you need to complete this activity following the following rules:

[1] This must be done in 5 posts, no more, no less.
[2] Do NOT double post.
[3] Title each post with which number you are up to. i.e. #1 ... #2 etc etc
[4] If you require Bentley's assistance write Bentley in the title as well, i.e. #3 Bentley! ...
[5] Have fun, remember you have gloves and goggles so you shouldn't get hurt. If you do you will be asked to leave the class to see the nurse and therefore miss out on the rest of the activity.

And time to start. Amelia wasn't sure if she was happy about this or not. She was probably more unhappy about it than anything, but only because she really hated fire. If it weren't for that fact she'd be excited to get planting.

With a small sigh Amelia walked over to where the professor had placed the goggles and grabbed a pair, placing them on top of her head, before walking over to the pots and selecting one.

Carefully dragging it over to where she'd placed her notes Amelia practiced the wand movement and the incantation for the spell separately once more before she decided to do the spell.

Pointing her wand at the pot as they'd been shown Amelia said the incantation, "Chaudensis," as she carefully traced around the inside of the pot. Her circle was smooth, but just to make sure that the incantation had worked she placed her hand cautiously on the outside of the pot. While they'd been told that the pot would get warm, and not hot, one could never be too careful. She was gratified however to feel that the pot had in fact gotten warm, and that she would therefore be able to do step two. Once she checked what that was...

Which means, it was time to get the seeds from Professor Bentley. Arranging the tools that she used earlier that they were now placed neatly on the side, she slid the dragonhide gloves on and walked towards the Herbology Professor. "Professor, I'll be taking a fire seed," she said and carefully, she picked up a single one from the tin. She then smiled at the Professor as she held the fire seed on her hand.

"Excuse me, coming through.. excuses.." Beezus mumbled while passing her classmates, just making them aware that she was currently clutching a fire seed on her little hand and to prevent any accidents to happen.

Once she was back on her working area, she bent down and slowly placed the single fire seed above the soil half filled pot. Then she took out her spare parchment and crossed out the third step, marking that she was done with it.

Taking a deep breath, Beezus stared at the fire seed on the pot for quite a while. It really was a fire seed because it was glowing as if flames were going to burst any second from within it. She wondered if those plants would also grow in the muggle world for it would really be helpful during times when the electricity would go off. It could be a temporary substitute for the light.

Crouching over at her pot, Beezus silently read the next step. It was to cover the seed with more soil so she stood up and grabbed her trowel and the bucket with the soil again. She shoveled a trowelful and poured it carefully above the flaming fire seed, filling the pot completely. After doing so, she patted the soil lightly, not too hard but just enough. Then she poured out the remaining soil in the bucket back on the ground.

Amelia checked back over the instructions and saw that the next step was to half fill the pot with soil. Now this would be an easy enough task. But just where was the soil?

Spotting it, and the planting tools near it Amelia made her way over, careful to avoid the other students that were further along in their preparations than she was. Especially the ones that were actually holding their fire seeds.

Grabbing a little shovel, what were those called again, and a bucket, she began to scoop the soil into the bucket. Once she'd shoveled as much in as she possibly could, she teetered back to her pot. The bucket was really heavy and she wished she hadn't filled it as much as she had, but better she collect more than she needed right at this moment, than have too little and need to negotiate her way back over to the soil before she needed too.

Amelia carefully transferred soil from the bucket into the pot, making sure that it was all even and she wouldn't have too much soil in one place and not enough in another. It was easy and relaxing work and Amelia found that she was done before she knew it.

Scooping a bit of extra soil from the pot she placed it back into the bucket, which still had soil left in it. She'd grabbed a big one in preparation for this after all.

Patting the soil down gently in the pot, she went to collect some more soil for her bucket while she waited for it to warm up enough to receive the fire seed.

Glad that she didn't have to wait anymore, Nora held her pot and moved Mr Deadly Fire Seed (well, it needed a name, didn't it?) in that dark corner professor Bentley had shown them. But, when she wanted to back off, there was something... wiggling... around her arm...

Clapping her other hand over her mouth to prevent herself from screaming, she waited to see what Mr Plant over there tried to do. Hug, the professor said? It looked more like capturing the food to Nora. Carefully and also trying not to draw any attention towards her, she tried to untangle the so-called friendly plant off her arm and made her way towards the exit of the greenhouse. "Goodbye, professor," she smiled, and out she went.

Beezus referred to the spare parchment with the steps on it once more, she was almost finished. And she was to do the last step right now.

Beezus stood up and headed back again to where the planting tools were placed and she picked up a small watering can. She returned to her working area and took hold of her wand. Then she muttered, "Aguamenti." Water cam spurting from her wand and she quickly reverted it to the watering can that the water was now flowing freely into it. She touched the water first. Pretty cold. And they needed boiling water so she needed a spell that could boil the water. And yes, of course. The spell that they had learned earlier. Beezus then pointed her wand above the water, "Chaudensis," she said as she formed a circle shape in mid air for the proper wand movement. A small spark emitted from her wand and flew towards the water. A frickling sound came afterwards and when she took a peek on it, the water was boiling. Good. That was what she needed. Placing the cover of the watering can back on, Beezus returned her wand its new amethyst colored holster and carefully poured a VERY small amount of water on the pot with the fire seed in it.

When she was done, Beezus crossed out the last step on her spare parchment and got another spare one from her backpack...

... wrote the name 'Beezus' on it and placed it on the side of the pot then she mumbled "Lentesco," to keep the parchment glued on it. It was to mark that it was indeed her pot and she was the one who planted the fire seed.

Having done so, she gathered all the tools that she had used and scourgified each then she returned them on their designated places. After that, she carried her pot, gloves still in hands and walked over to the Herbology Professor, "I'm done Professor," she said as she placed the pot on the area that Professor Bentley had told them to. She then wiped the sweat on her forehead and gave the Professor a wide smile. "Thank you for today's lesson Professor! I'm mostly looking forward to the growing of the Fire Seed Bushes." Beezus added as she bowed slightly.

For boiling water, add water (via aguamenti) to the watering can and heat it. This will ensure you 1. control the temperature and 2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.

Now that she had a heated pot, Stella reached over to check her notes again. She was fairly certain she knew the next step, but double-checking was still a good idea. Plus, she'd seen others be told to start over for doing the wrong step already, and she preferred not doing the same. Herbology wasn't necessarily one of her best subjects, but that still didn't give her an excuse to slack off. And she liked Professor Bentley, too, which was another reason to do everything right.

Apparently the next step involved more waiting, but she didn't mind. If the soil heated up as fast as the pot had, she wouldn't be waiting long. First, she had to get the soil into the pot, though, and she slid her gloves on before scooping it into her pot until it was half full. No more, no less, and then she sat back again. Time to wait, although she had to wonder how she'd know the soil was heated enough. Testing it was one idea, but she wondered if there was moisture in it that she could see steam, too. Either way, she figured she had a few minutes, and she looked around the greenhouse to occupy her time. It was already starting to empty, but she wasn't going to hurry.

The last task was the water the fire seed, and that would require some boiling water. Eino picked up a water can, and filled it with water using the Water-Producing Charm. "Aguamenti." He said with his wand pointed at the can. The container began to fill with clear water, which was, unfortunately, at the wrong temperature. He pointed his wand a second time to the can, and this time uttered a different incantation. "Chaudensis." As he said it, he traced a circle by rotating his wrist, and soon enough he noticed the water warming up. The steam was faint but it was apparent, all Eino had to do now was wait until the water boiled. This didn't take too long. Soon enough there was a powerful stream of hot air emerging from the bubbling can. It looked like a potion was brewing, or stew. With his dragon hide gloves on he picked up the can and began to water the seed. He poured very small portions of water a few times, making sure not to drown the seed. When he was done, he put the can down performed the Glacius Charm on it to make sure no one would trip and burn themselves on the can. Finally, he cleaned the can and his working station. There a hazard free zone. He took the pot and placed it exactly where they had been instructed to. "Good bye, Professor." The boy said, removed his googles, gloves, gathered his belongings, and left.

Aurora picked up her pot and carefully lifted it over to the bush indicated by Professor Bentley. Ohh, this was so cute! She put the pot down and let the vines wrap themselves around her arms. Oooooh it tickled!! But now she had to go and tidy up... pulling gently, the vines let go of her arms and she walked back to her work space. She cleaned it up, putting the excess soil back and using scourgify to get rid of any that she couldn't get up. Fabulous.

"Great lesson, Professor!" she said to Professor Bentley, smiling widely. "I'll be back to visit you." she said to her seedling, then she put her wand away, replaced her goggles and took off her gloves as she left the greenhouse.

Lewis was starting to believe that flooding the seed was NOT part of the assignment. At least none of the other people around him had done it. Had he put it too much water? The pot was...err...on the verge of spilling over. How do you fix this? Was there maybe a spell for it? He could use Tergeo but wasn't sure if that might make matters worse.

Hearing the professor give them further instructions on where to put the pots after they'd finished, Lewis briefly considered just putting the pot over into the corner along with the others and hope for the best. He hadn't put his name on it or anything after all. But no, he had done so surprisingly well in this class so far that he didn't want to ruin it. Maybe Professor Bentley would know a way to save the seed after all.

So, heaving a small sigh and already feeling his cheeks flush Lewis raised his hand timidly. "Erm, Professor? I...think I might have a problem here." Hopefully the others weren't paying any attention to him. He just needed the professor, not about a hundred extra pairs of eyes on him.

Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil, Gwen read from her piece of parchment and nodded. Wait-what? We’ll actually have to take that thing?, the third year asked herself, glimpsing at the fire seeds. Here goes…

Gwendolyn made sure she had the dragon gloves on before taking the seed. She grabbed it slowly and placed it gently on top of the soil, as if it would be really fragile. Don’t do anything stupid…, the Ravenclaw told herself and stared at the seed. Noticing that this extremely ‘difficult’ step was over, Gwen finally exhaled.

Amelia touched the soil gently, and felt that it had grown warmer while she'd gotten some more. Which was good since according to step three it needed to be that way. Only now came the part that she was kind of dreading. Still it would be good to get it done at least.

Reading over the steps once more Amelia opened her bag and took out her dragon hide gloves. She put them on at the bench and also pushed her goggles down. She could be forgetful so better to have the gloves on as soon as she remembered them than to wait until she got closer to the seeds. Otherwise she'd probably burn herself, and she didn't need more scars from fire.

As she walked over to the seeds she took several deep, hopefully calming breaths. She'd already been feeling enclosed, but now that she actually had to go near the fire seeds... well the feeling was getting even worse.

She carefully grabbed a fire seed and then moved quickly back to her pot, placing it on top of the soil as directed before taking several steps back. She was not enjoying herself. At least she was now nearly done though. All she had to do was cover the seed and water it.

Let’s see what’s next on the list, Gwen told herself. Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it). Riiight…, she thought and started filling the pot. This really isn’t so hard to do after all! And what’s next? At it down a little. All right- and how much is this ‘a little’ exactly?! She was a total mass- she really needed instructions that even TROLLS would understand.

*pat pat pat*

This should be enough, Gwendolyn decided. Looking back at her piece of parchment, she felt relieved. JUST ONE MORE STEP TO GOOOOO!, the Ravenclaw wanted to scream but didn’t.

Unfortunately Amelia couldn't maintain her distance from the seed. Much as she would like to do so to cover the seed she'd need to actually be near it. If she could find any way to cover it from far, far away she would have done so.

Taking tentative steps back towards the pot, and the bucket with the soil, Amelia picked up the little spade thing again, and began to carefully shovel the soil into the pot. She worked diligently, but instead of finding the task relaxing as she had with the first half of the pot she found this quite stressful due to the seed lurking beneath the soil.

Once the pot was filled as much as it needed to be Amelia gave the soil a pat down, being careful to not pat it down too much and therefore damage the seed. Because as much as she hated anything that could create fire she didn't want to get a bad grade for killing the seed.

That done she placed away the tools she'd no longer need, and removed one of her gloves, placing it next to her instructions.

SPOILER!!: Kimalia's notes

* Charm pot with Chaudensis to heat itself.
* Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up.
* Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil.
* Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it).
* Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.

The pot was pretty warm already, so that gave Kimalia the encouraging sign to fill it up. Hmm, now was it water or soil first.. Peeking in her notes, Ah okay, soil first.
Her gloves were already on of course, so she started filling up the pot halfway before gently smoothing it out even. Great, now waiting for it to warm up..

Tick, tock, tick, tock. Was that warm yet? Feeling the soil it was relatively warm so she then went on to the next step.

Default post 5. Profesoooor?!

While grabbing the filled water can, Gwendolyn couldn’t believe she was ACTUALLY going to be over. Yes! I will survive the first Herbology lesson!, the third year told herself and then snatched her wand. ‘Chaudensis!’, the girl said loud and clear and watched out for the boiling water. Good enough… Now I’ll just have to water the seed. Consider this done.

‘Umm… Professor?’, Gwendolyn started saying, and, after a short pause she added: ‘After planting it, what else does it need?’, she asked and glimpsed back at her pot. ‘I mean, how can I take care of it?’ Make sure it grows…, Gwen thought and considered coming in the greenhouses more often. She didn’t even realize that she’ll probably forget about the fire seed bush as soon as class would end. Hmm… but perhaps I’ll actually help growing this… thing.

Ok. Now for the final step. The all important step in fact. She needed to water the plant with boiling water. But first she needed a watering can. And to take the soil and bucket back to where she'd gotten them. Seeing as they were near the watering cans anyway.

Amelia teetered back over to the soil mounds and poured the rest of the soil back onto them for others to use before placing the bucket, and little shovel thing, back where they belonged. She then grabbed a pretty looking watering can and made her way back over to her plant, that was not yet a plant.

Right.

So she needed to slightly water the plant, and use Aguamenti to have the water in the can before heating it. Seemed simple enough.

Once again unholstering her wand Amelia pointed it into the can and said, "Aguamenti," allowing the water to half fill the watering can before she ended the spell. And now to heat it. "Chaudensis," she cast, this time more confident than she had been when heating the pot. She made sure though that her wrist was pointed down correctly, and that the circular movement was smooth, and full. She was gratified to see the water begin to bubble a few seconds after she'd said the spell.

Amelia then cheerfully tipped the watering can gently and allowed the boiling water to fall into the soil until she'd watered the fire seed enough. She didn't want to drown it. She then, quite gladly moved her pot to where the professor directed before fully cleaning up the space she'd been using. It wouldn't be nice to leave a mess after all.

"Thanks Professor, it was a great lesson," Amelia called as she rushed from the greenhouse upon finishing her tidy up. She couldn't wait to be out of the room again and in the fresh air. The enclosed space plus the fireseed bush were making her light headed. In fact if she had of been forced to stay in the greenhouse much longer the class would have been witness to a fainting girl. Which would not have been fun.

Nate wrote down his notes.

5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it

Nate took a deep breath and said "Chaw-den. Chauden-sis. No that sin't right. Chaudensis. Chaudensis. There we go that sounds right. I think that's right."
Yeh wand movement time. He made sure to do all of the professor's instruction. Makeing sure not to move his whole hand. He did this over again about 5 more times to make sure he could get it correct so nothing bad happens.
Now time for the real thing. Nate looked down at the pot, then at his wand. He slowly pointed his wand at the pot and under his breath said "Chsudensis."
Nothing happened. He tried again but a bit louder then te last "Chaudensis." Again nothing happened. Now he said it in a normal speaking voice "Chaudensis." Finally the pot started to heat up. Now he had to wait 7 minutes. He could also check that off on his list.

Hannah checked her notes again. Ok time to fill the pot with soil. She grabbed the soil and filled the pot up halfway. A quick glance at her notes showed her that she would need to wait a few minute to allow the pot to heat up. So she sait their silently waiting for the pot to warm.

Hannah checked to see it the pot was warm, and sure enough it was. With her dragonhide gloves on securely she went and retrieved a fire seed. With a quick glance at her notes it looked like she only needed to place the seed on top of the soil. Hmmm...easy enough. So she placed the seed on top of the soil and went back to her notes.

Hmm, there. He placed the can down and made sure that his fire seed wasn't drowning. He learned that the hard way when his mom was teaching him how to garden. When he was done, he labeled his pot with his name. He was definitely coming back to check up on it. Kennedy took the pot where they were told to and came back to clean his work area. With a simple Scourgify he left it as clean as he had found it.

He swung his messenger bag over his shoulder and looked back just to make sure he didn't forget anything. As he walked to the exit he waved over to Professor Bentley. "Bye, Professor Bentley, thanks for the lesson!" he said, his cheeks going slightly pink. Why did they do that?!

After setting the pot down so that her label showed clearly, she headed back to her station. She took her gloves back off again and placed them into her bag before lifting it over her shoulders. She said goodbye to the Professor and then made her way out of the greenhouses, the sunlight hurting her eyes slightly.

Then she was left with nothing to do but sit back and wait for the water to come to a boil. It seemed like it was taking forever, and Sierra even began fidgeting with the hem of her jumper as she waited and waited. Finally, she saw the bubbling water and knew it had come to a boil.

With her gloved hands, Sierra grabbed a hold of the can then raised it above her pot. She tilted it ever-so-slightly, not wanting to drown her seed. Starting over was just not her thing. Not when it was nearly time to go. When the soil appeared moistened, Sierra tilted the can back and away from the pot. After a good inspection of her work, she found everything to be the best of her ability. She fixed her name to the pot then cleaned her area.

Grabbing her pot, Sierra moved it to the area the professor had pointed out. After putting away her gloves and returning her goggles, Sierra swung her bag over shoulder and turned to the professor. "Bye, Professor Bentley," she said, and then with a wave, she was gone.

"Hmm..Okay" So he need to perform Aguamenti first then? Messer pick up his wand and pointed it through the opening of the watering can. "Aguamenti!" and there's a jet of water coming out from his wand. Cool! Then he made a circular motion with his wand "Chaudensis!" Now he need to wait until the water boil.

Few minutes later, Messer saw bubbling water inside his watering can that mean his water already boil. Carefully, he grabbed a hold of the can then raised it above his pot and poured the boiling water bit by bit, after all he didn't want to drown his fire seed. He put his name to his pot so it'd be easier for him to find it then he cleaned up his work area.

When the eleven years old sure that his work area already clean, carefully he pick up his pot and put it on the area Professor Bentley had pointed out earlier. He heard the Professor said that they could go. "Good bye, Professor. Thank you for the interesting lesson. Good day!" With his bag in his shoulder, Messer walked toward the door.

Text Cut: Spare Parchment
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.

... wrote the name 'Beezus' on it and placed it on the side of the pot then she mumbled "Lentesco," to keep the parchment glued on it.

"Yes, goodbye... you too... have a good day... see you later," she replied as she watched the students begin the exit the greenhouse. Well that went rather well... nobody died or had a heart attack.

"Aquamenti," she said and a jet of water came out of her wand, filling her can halfway. Repeating the circular wand movement from earlier and cast Chaudensis. She knelt down, hugging her knees to her chest, while she waited for the water to come to a boil. NOW she felt like she was waiting for her cauldron to boil...which depressed her that she was thinking about Potions during Herbology. Even IF the two went hand in hand at times, that didn't make her feel much better.

When she heard the soft tinging of the metal, she knew that the water had come to a boil and she put her gloves back on just in case the entire watering can had been heated. Dropping all that water all over the place would be a disaster. No need to repeat a flooded greenhouse again.

Kurumi performed a few practices on the ground away from her pot. Making sure that she could pour just a little bit of water and stop. Returning her attention to her pot, Kurumi squinted her eyes and brought the soil into focus. Slowly, she tilted the watering can over the pot and the moment she heard a sizzle - which was only about a second or so after she poured, she tilted it back up and set the can down, removing her gloves afterwards and testing the soil briefly. Good, not too damp.

Kurumi quickly wrote her name down on a piece of parchment and attached it to the pot with a Sticking Charm so that she could find the pot more easily later.

Alright, gloves back on now. Kurumi picked up her pot and hugged it to her chest tightly, allowed it to warm herself, as she waddled over to the bushes as indicated by Professor Bentley. Right...the creepers... Kurumi tried her best to avoid them, but they were rather persistent vines. Once she was able to get away, Kurumi dusted herself off and began to pick up her things.

"Professor Bentley," Kurumi asked glancing back at her pot for a moment. "Do we need to cover them with something? To make sure that everything is dark?" Fireseeds were, as she explained, very VERY sensitive plants and with all of them coming in and out of the greenhouse there was bound to be an excess of light that could make them sick or something.
SPOILER!!: to do

"Ahh good question, generally speaking, yes you would cover it up with a small dark cloth, usually made from a mixture of kelp and grindylow skin, which then breaks down and is absorbed for nutrients, but in this case, no.... the greenhouse is sufficiently dark enough. ... The ivy will make sure of it." She said with a nod of her head. As she finished speaking the ivy in the area tightened their bond on the glass, moving their leaves closer to block even the faintest trace of light in the section to be hidden. It then eased itself a little to allow a low light, enough for people to see their feet.

Can we do it?" she asked with her eyes sparkling. Her mum wasn't there to stop her from doing the fun stuff now! Hooray!
Turning to one of the new Hufflepuff students, Seren flashed him a bright smile. "You can come back whenever you please. Later today... tomorrow, next week. That is entirely up to you."

"They require very little watering, no more than once or twice a week, and only enough to moisten the soil a bit. Remember, boiling water only. And you are always more than welcome to do it yourself."

Seren's head snapped up as she heard the words 'Professor' and 'problem' in the same sentence! Spinning on her heel to face the student whom addressed her, Seren-- eyes wide, held out her arms to steady herself.
"Problem?" she asked... "What's the problem?"

She didn’t even realize that she’ll probably forget about the fire seed bush as soon as class would end. Hmm… but perhaps I’ll actually help growing this… thing.
It was sweet of Gwendolyn to approach her, and it was even sweeter that she wanted to know how to care for the plant later.
"It doesn't need very much, mostly it just needs darkness... a small watering of boiling water once or twice a week and aside from that not much else. What you can do is sprinkle a little blood and bone mix around its base... just be careful not to burn yourself."

According to her notes she would need to get more soil and place in on the fire seed. Hannah found the soil and covered the seed with it all the way to the top of the pot. She carefully patted down the soil making sure that is wasn't too tightly packed. Alright almost done she thought to herself.

Ok now time to water the seed. She watched as the other students said the incantation aguamenti. Hmmm so she also said "Aguamenti." and watched the water form into a watering can. so she needed it to boil so she twisted her wrist and said "Chaudensis." Perfect she actually made boiling water. She then watered the seed with the correct amount of water. She was done.

I’m actually going to do this. Yes, I am!, Gwen told herself. Honestly now, how hard can it be to take care of the plant? While listening to Professor Bentley talk, Gwen nodded. Darkness- done- it is already here… boiling water… yup- I can do that… Blood and bone mix? Yeah, I’ll manage that too. Wait- WHAAAT?

O__________o

Burn myself?, the third year thought and swallowed heavily. Gulp. ‘Thank you, Professor’, she finally said. I’m going to do this! I’ll manage to do something good, she tried to encourage herself.

The last step. Selina had just one thing left to do and then she was done dealing with fire. As much as she liked Professor Bentley she did not understand why she had to deal with flammable substances. Eh, she was not the Professor and Bentley knew what she was doing. So she drew her wand and watered the plant with "Aguamenti!"

Simultaneously heated up the water with the spell they had all learned, "Chaundensis!". It was hot!!! Oh Merlin. Once the plant was watered enough she stopped and finished up her work.
