Default The Greenhouses: Herbology Lesson One

Herbology Lesson One

It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.

Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive.
"Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.

Lesson Progression:

Why is there little light in this greenhouse?
What plant is this? (identify only)
What are fire seeds used for?
Do you have any questions?
What care requirements do we need to consider?
Practice the incantation.
Practice the wand movement.
The Activity
You may be dismissed when you have finished
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

Waiiiiit! Waiiiit!

Lewis periodically checked if the soil was warm already by holding his hand - again, ungloved - right above it. If it emitted a little heat already it was warmed up. If not, he still had to wait a little. That was familiar to him too, though, this was something he had to do all the time when cooking. And patience is a virtue, right?

So when he was finally sure the soil had warmed up a little, he put his dragonhide gloves back on, grabbed his wand off tightly in his right hand and made his way back to the front. He was NOT going to touch this fire seed after all. Knowing himself he would probably drop it and set the whole greenhouse on fire. It could happen. That baby house elf had done it too!

Lewis peeked into the silver tin which contained the seeds for a moment before pointing his wand at them. "Wingardium Leviosa." He muttered under his breath and carefully levitated one of the seeds out. There, that was much easier. Slowly with his wand raised and the seed in the air right in front of his nose, he walked back to his seat. Once safely there he carefully lowered his wand and therefore levitated the fire seed into his pot, placing it on top of the warm soil.

SPOILER!!: To Do List

Quote:
1. Charm pot to heat itself.
2. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up.
3. Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil.

4. Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it).
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.

For boiling water, add water (via aguamenti) to the watering can and heat it. This will ensure you 1. control the temperature and 2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.

Alright, now that her pot was warming up, it was time to fill it halfway with soil. Ellie went up to where the supplies were and got enough soil to fill it halfway. When she got back to her pot, she dumped it in slowly until it looked just right.

"Perfect," she mumbled to herself with a small smile and crossed that off her list. Now, she just had to let it rest and wait for the soil to warm up.

Alyssa was now ready to plant the seed. She reviewed her journal again just to make sure that she was following the steps as instructed.

Text Cut: Alyssa's journal

Check off steps one to three. Alyssa checked to see her dragon hide gloves to see whether it had been scorched while holding on to the fire seed and was glad that there was no marks. 'Now to cover the fire seed', Alyssa thought to herself. Making sure that her dragon hide gloves were securely on her hands, Alyssa picked up the bucket of soil, leaned over the pot and slowly covered the fire seed with the remainder of the soil making sure that the seed was thoroughly covered and the pot was filled. She then smoothed out the soil evenly and gently patted down the soil, making sure that she didn't overdo it.

Alright, Pam thought. Fill the pot halfway, and let it warm up. after she had gotten the soil, she filled her pot to, what looked like, halfway. But she wanted to be sure, she didn't want anyting to go wrong. So she leveled off the soil, and added a bit, just to make sure everything was perfect. Once she was happy, she felt the sides of the pot to make sure everything was still warm. And thankfully, it was. She didn't want to warm it up further and end up making it too hot. It was only supposed to be warm to the touch, not burn your hand off hot.

She turned to her journal, and crossed off the second step, and waited. Waited for the soil to heat up, so she could plant the seeds. As she was waiting, she decided now would be a good time to label her pot. She looked around for something to write with. She saw someone place down a pen. "Can I borrow that?" She nodded towards the pen. After the student's answer, Pam took the pen and wrote 'Pamphylia Barstow, 2R' for second year Ravenclaw. She replaced the pen to the student, and nodded a thanks.

Alright. The pot was warm and the soil had been in for a few minutes. Ellie was tapping her foot, just watching the other students around her busy themselves with the same processes.

Once Ellie got way too impatient, she held her hand over the soil in her pot and decided that it was warm enough. So, she walked up to the front and took a fire seed of her own. Thank goodness for the dragonhide gloves. Although she did feel rather sad about wearing the hide of dead dragon...

Carefully holding it in her gloved hands, Ellie walked back to her pot and set it in the middle... N'AWW, LOOKIT HER BBY FIRE SEED. She just hoped she wouldn't kill it. That would be sad.

Now she could cross that off...

Feeling around in her robes pocket, she plucked out an old silver tin and screwed the top off. Inside where the fire seeds, all hot and red hissed a little as it met more oxygen.

"Alright everyone, I trust you all have your notes ready.." and that they were paying attention.

"First things first, you must perform the charm on your pot... now you will know if it has worked because you will feel the sides begin to warm, it wont be hot, just warm to the touch. Then come up and get your materials and follow the instructions on the board."

Simple, yes?

Tapping her wand on the blackboard once more, another line appeared beneath he instructions.

"So everyone come and claim a pot and goggles and get started. ONLY come for your seed when you need it."

"Also should you wish to mark your pot for whatever reason, feel free to do so." ... because she expected at least SOME of them to visit their seedling as it grew.

First Justin went and collected a pair of goggles and a watering can as well as a pot. justin also marked the bottom of his pot with his name so he knew which was his. Then he took out his wand and in a circular motion very slowly with the charm, " Chaudensis" as he still circled his wand around it's rim. Testing it' temperature until it was warm enough to go on to the next step of the task.

Get a fire seed and place it on the soil. Pam read from her journal. She looked around for some seeds. She found some up by the professor, and decided it was a good time to get one. She felt the pot one more time, and felt that it was still warm. So she walked up to where the professor was, and carefully grabbed one. Under her gloves, she could feel how hot the seed was.

She carefully placed the seed into the pot, and crossed off the third step in her journal. She got ready for the fourth step. Two to go.

Next Justin filled his pot halfway with soil and waited for the soil to warm up as instructed. While waiting he looked around at the rest of the students to see if anyone of the first years might need a little help.

Alyssa knew that she was almost done planting the fire seed. She checked her journal one more time to make sure that she hadn't missed anything.

Text Cut: Alyssa's journal

This will ensure you
1. control the temperature and
2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.

Now she had to water the plant, but first she had to boil the water. Alyssa walked over to the tool cupboard and removed a watering can from it. She then brought it over to her pot. She took out her wand and pointed it inside the watering can and using the "Aguamenti" spell, she filled it with water. Making sure that her gloves were still securely on her hands and that her goggles were tightly around her head and protecting her eyes, Alyssa then pointed her wand inside the watering can. Rotating her wrist and making a circular motion with her wand, she traced a circle inside the watering can and she said "Chaundensis" to heat up the water.

She waited until the water started to bubble and steam was rising from the water, before she holstered her wand again. Picking up the watering can with both hands, she slowly brought it over to the pot. She lifted up the watering can and poured a small amount of water on the soil covering the fire seed. She took great care that she only poured enough to moisten the soil because she didn't want to drown the seed. Once she determined that the soil was sufficiently moist, she lay the watering can down onto the ground.

Alyssa was sure that she was done with the planting process, but she reviewed her journal one more time to verify.

Text Cut: Alyssa's journal

1. control the temperature and
2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.

Now that she was done planting the fire seed, she proceeded to clean up the tools that she had used. Removing her goggles and her dragon hide gloves, she unholtered her wand, and using the "Scourgify" spell, she pointed her wand at the bucket, the spade and the watering can, cleaning all three of them before she returned them to the cupboard where she had taken it out from.

While waiting for further instructions from Professor Bentley, she took a little marker pen from her jacket pocket and wrote her name ALYSSA on the side of the pot to identify that the seed had been planted by her.

She then went up and grabbed a pot. Then went back to where she was. She retrieved her googles and gloves from her bag and put them beside her pot so they were ready when they were needed. Taylor took out her wand and circled the inside edge of the pot, "Chaudensis." She sat her wand down beside her gloves, goggles and pot. Taylor placed her hands on the outside of the pot, feeling the pot getting warm under her bare hands. She smiled in delight.

After a few minutes Justin tested his soil and it was nice and warm. So, he put on his glaoves and went to the front of the class and recieved the seed from the professor and carefully walked back to his pot. He put his seed into the soil and covered it carefully as not to completely smother it. then he took off his gloves and checked the istructions he had copied from the board.

Silvia picked up a trowel and started filling up the pot, now that it seemed sufficiently warm. When it was halfway full she stopped. Now she had to wait. Meanwhile, she glanced around the greenhouse, watching as other students planted their seeds. Every minute she checked the soil to see if it was warm enough.

Ok Next step... Taylor looked at the directions. She filled her pot halfway with soil. Taylor put her hands on the outside of the pot, trying to warm her hands. She took her hands off the outside after a few minutes. Taylor looked around waiting for her soil to get warm.

Default Post #4 Le covering seed with soil
Sardines ♥ BHB ♥ Dallie ♥ Grumpy ♥ MY SUN AND STARS ♥ i love julia

Now that her precious little seed was on top of her soil, it was time for Ellie to cover it the rest of the way. So, she got some more soil from up front and brought it back to her pot. Maybe later she would visit the greenhouse and decorate it or something. It was much too boring and... normal.

Following the directions, Ellie dumped soil on top of her seed. She patted it down a little, but not too much so it wouldn't suffocate. And then she sprinkled a little more on top. Perfection.

Brushing her dirty gloves together, she got as much of the soil off as she could and crossed number four off her checklist.

Add more soil, don't suffocate. Pam read in her head. So she grabbed more soil, and slowly added it to her pot. She didn't want to hurt the seed. So she gently patted it down, but not too much. She really didn't want to suffocate the seed. She made a smile at the pot. She knew she looked silly, but she maybe waved a little at the plant. She wasn't ashamed. She always thought plants needed a little more love. She then crossed the step off her list, and got ready for the last step.

Arya had been off to the side, following along with the lesson quietly while letting the more... eager students participate in the questioning portion. Fire didn't fascinate her as much as it did some others. She stayed back when the other students had gathered up their supplies, not minding whatever was leftover, surely they wouldn't have bad pots?

She went over, gloves tucked under her arm, and first gathered up the goggles. They went on her face as she moved to the pots, picking one at random before moving back to her little area. The gloves didn't go on juuust yet. Well, one did.

Her wand hand remained un-gloved as she drew her wand, aiming it at the pot as she moved her wrist in a circular motion. "Chaudensis." Arya re-holstered her wand and touched the outside of the pot with her hand. Warm.

Now that that step was completed, she moved on to the next.

Violet looked at the steps that she needed to do. It didn't seem too hard by the looks, so she put on her dragonhide gloves and goggles to get ready for work.

First step was to warm up the pot wit the charm she learned previously in class. Violet took out her wand, practiced the wand motion first by rotating her wrist slowly. After a few more attempts she rotated her wrist once more and muttered, "Chaudensis.". Violet then quickly took of her gloves to feel her pot. Indeed the pot was getting warm and not hot to the touch. She praised herself for a job well done and crossed off the first step on her list, ready for the second step.

Text Cut: Violet's journal

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

Victoria tried to hold her laugh as she saw the first step. Charm the pot. Yes, Victoria should try to sing to it during the process.

Taking her wand out, and pointing it to the pot she has gotten to plant the seed, she muttered the incantation in a clear voice, "Chaudensis." Hoping that she had said the right spell in the correct voice and tone, Victoria slowly laid her hands around the pot to feel its change in temperature. Sure enough, the pot is getting a little warmer by the second. Glad by the success in her Charms work, Victoria crossed out the first step in her notebook.

Post 1.

Autumn took her pot, gloves and goggles and checked her pot for cracks.... None! Thats was good!
She picked up her wand and traced a circle "Chaudensis," She was dubious to touch it at first but as she placed her hand to it it warmed her up instantly!! Autumn wondered if she could place this spell upon her duvets!

Lewis eyed the fire seed for a moment, just lying there on top of the soil. So far he hadn't done that badly, had he? Hey, he had a pot, he had some soil in it AND he had a seed too. What more could they want from him? He was going to be brilliant in this class!

Except for this next step. He hated instructions like these. How was he supposed to know what 'too much' was? Lewis dug around in the soil next to the seed a little until he had a handful of it in his glove-covered hand and carefully spread it over the seed. Okay, it was now lightly covered, he could still see it if he closely enough - and probably even better without the goggles. How much soil should be on top of the seed exactly? He really wasn't good at this kind of guessing and assuming when it came to plants. Well, not only when it came to plants.

With a small sigh, Lewis glanced around the room for a moment before digging into the fresh soil some more, putting it on top of the seed until there was a small heap of of soil covering the seed. Okay, That should be sufficient right? Now, onto the patting. Erm. He reached out and lightly patted the soil over and around the seed so smoothed out a little and became hard-ish. Huh..

Had he done this right?

Taylor adjusted her goggles and gloves. She gently poured in some more soil to fill the pot. Taylor patted lightly on the soil. She hoped that she won't suffocate the seed.... if she did that would be dreadful. Thoughts of point deductions, embarassment and killing a seed filled her mind and shook her head lightly, making sure she didn't press hard on the soil.

Violet then scooped up some soil from the box and dumped it into the pot. Now, all she had to do was wait for the soil to heat up and she could proceed to the third step which was the plant the actual fire seed. While waiting, Violet crossed off the second step.

Taylor noticed that one of her friends were close by her so she waved slightly to her friend and then getting back on task, she brushed off the soil from her gloves. Taylor made another mark on her notes.

Taylor used aguamenti to put water in the watering can. She heated the can. Taylor marked her pot so that she knows which one was her while waiting for the water to boil. She poured some of the water on the soil but stopped when the soil was moist to the right point. Taylor sat the can down and made one last mark on her notes.
