It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
Post #4 - Covering seed with soil until pot is filled
♥s her SS family l Wifey is MINE | Naughty Niffler l Whittysaur l #awkwardturtle<#
Seeing as Amelia had brought plenty of soil to her table when she had done the second step, she didn't need to go back and get some more from the pile at the front.
Instead, she picked up her little trowel again and started filling the pot with more soil. She made sure to be careful as she did it, patting dry without doing it too much. She didn't want to suffocate her poor seed so that it didn't have a chance to grow.
When she had filled her pot, she placed the trowel back on the desk again. She crossed off the step now:
Quote:
1. Charm pot to heat itself. 2. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up. 3. Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil. 4. Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it).
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.
For boiling water, add water (via aguamenti) to the watering can and heat it. This will ensure you 1. control the temperature and 2. don't over water your seed. Use a VERY small amount, simply enough to moisten the soil.
Removing her gloves, Ira checked her soil in the pot. It felt warm enough. I think this is fine.. she thought to herself and proceeded to the next step. What was it? She looked over in her journal. Now to plant a seed.
Wearing her gloves again, Ira went to where Professor Bentley was with the bottle of fire seeds. She picked one and after inspecting if it was looking okay, took a single fire seed and went back to her pot. She carefully and slowly placed it on top of soil in her.
Then she updated her journal:

LuLu stuffed all the notes she took in her pocket, for future refferance. She then retrieved her dragon hide gloves and goggles from her clearly mess of a bag and put them on.
She then took her wand and held it in her and her attention returned back to Proffeser Bently for a few seconds! First instruction she looked at her pot carefully for pure inspection of course.. ''Chaudenses,'' HOPFULLY it would come ot right the chances were one in a million in her opinion though... D-did it emm work.. She carried on and took off her gloves! It h-had worked R-REALLY??? She put her gloves back on quickly

This was the last step that Amelia had to do for her fire seed, and it seemed like it wasn't too bad all things considering.
Needing a watering can, she headed back up to the front and selected one that she thought would do the job perfectly. She then headed back to her fire seed, and set the watering can down. Picking up her wand with some difficulty because of the gloves, she pointed it inside of the can. "Aguamenti," she said and watched the water pour out of her wand. She made sure to only produce a teeny tiny bit before she stopped.
Now that she had the water, she needed to heat it. Using her wand, she pointed it at the watering can and heated it until the water was to a boil.
Picking up the watering can, she slowly and carefully watered the fire seed before placing the watering can on the table again. She then crossed off the last step:

Once the fire seed had been placed on top of the soil, Ira looked in her journal for further instructions:

Oh! More soil. Ira had brought only little soil last time. So that meant she'd have to go again and dig and bring some more.
Sighing inwardly, she made her way to the front, collected a shovel and bucket again and dug up some soil and collected it in her bucket. She brought it to where her pot was and poured the soil on top of the seed, taking care that it was completely covered.
Then gently patted the top of the soil. Not too hard, not too soft.
Then she updated her journal:

Now that the pot was warming up nicely, Alyssa referred to her journal for the next step.

She went to the tool shed and removed a bucket and a spade from it before walking over to soil that the Professor had left in front. She scooped the soil into the bucket and carried it back to her pot. She carefully filled half the pot with soil and let the soil warm up in it for several minutes before she proceeded to the start on the third step of the process.
After he finished his second task, Messer move onto the third task which is placing the fire seed on top of the soil. He put his dragon hide gloves back on before he went to take a single fire seed. He returned back to where he put his pot after he got a nice looking fire seed.
The first year gently placed the fire seed on top the soil. Three down, two more to go.

Carigan had been doing the work silently, so far she had already charmed the pot to heat itself., she had also added the soil and had allowed it to warm up. It had been several minutes so she imagined the soil was hot enough. She then, with her dragon hide gloves, carefully took a fire seed and placed it on top of that soil, then covered it with coil, patting ever so gently.
Then she went off to get the boiling water to water it.

Minerva then went up and got her goggles and pot, once she was back to her working station she placed her gloves on and picked up her wand. Moving her wrist in a circular motions she said "Chaudenses". She felt her pot getting warm and smiled that she did it correctly.
As soon as the Professor said they could begin, the third year took a pot and the goggles. Hopefully this will go well, she thought. For no reason really, the girl decided to mark her pot. Perhaps I’ll see how it grows, Gwen told herself, even though she was sure she would forget about the plant as soon as the class finished.
Before starting, Gwendolyn copied the five steps on her piece of parchment. Just to make sure she won’t forget anything, the Ravenclaw decided to cross each step out after it was done. All right- first step--, she thought and looked back at her notes. Charm pot to heat itself. This shouldn’t be hard…
‘Chaudensis!’, the third year said loud and clear. Realizing that it worked properly, she crossed it out from the list and was ready to move on. So far so good.

Allllrighty, here came the action. Time to get to work. Ellie went up to the front and grabbed a pot and... goggles? "We have to wear these?" Ellie mumbled quietly, examining them. They weren't very cute. But, you know, wouldn't want to get water in your eyes or anything. That would be tragic.
Ellie walked back, set her pot down, and carefully put her safety goggles on. Wonderful. Then she looked at her notes... Charm pot to heat itself. Right. Getting her wand out, Ellie pointed it at her pot. "Chaudensis, she said whilst doing the handy dandy wand movement.
Placing her wand back in her robes, Ellie took off a glove and tentatively touched the side of her pot. After holding it there for a moment, she felt it gradually get warmer. She nodded to herself and crossed the first direction off before putting her glove back on.

"Uhh what cow?" she asked a little perplexed. How on earth had the boy come to the conclusion of... cow... in the incantation? Chaudensis... there was nothing cow-like about it at all.
"Chaudensis dear... chaw-den-sis."
Well on the whole it looked as though the students were getting along quite nicely. While they continued practicing the wand movement, Seren summoned a box of goggles--because you could never be too safe, and another small cart of watering cans.
Feeling around in her robes pocket, she plucked out an old silver tin and screwed the top off. Inside where the fire seeds, all hot and red hissed a little as it met more oxygen.
"Alright everyone, I trust you all have your notes ready.." and that they were paying attention.
"First things first, you must perform the charm on your pot... now you will know if it has worked because you will feel the sides begin to warm, it wont be hot, just warm to the touch. Then come up and get your materials and follow the instructions on the board."
Simple, yes?
Tapping her wand on the blackboard once more, another line appeared beneath he instructions.
"So everyone come and claim a pot and goggles and get started. ONLY come for your seed when you need it."
"Also should you wish to mark your pot for whatever reason, feel free to do so." ... because she expected at least SOME of them to visit their seedling as it grew.
OOC: To be eligible for full participation marks you need to complete this activity following the following rules:
[1] This must be done in 5 posts, no more, no less.
[2] Do NOT double post.
[3] Title each post with which number you are up to. i.e. #1 ... #2 etc etc
[4] If you require Bentley's assistance write Bentley in the title as well, i.e. #3 Bentley! ...
[5] Have fun, remember you have gloves and goggles so you shouldn't get hurt. If you do you will be asked to leave the class to see the nurse and therefore miss out on the rest of the activity.
Vlimia cleared her notes away and into her pocket, which was not all that easy to manage while wearing gloves. Somehow she did it, and quickly copied down the steps in her journal.

Vlim went and got her pot. She wondered if she should mark it. Vlimia decided to, and wrote her name on the pot with erasable ink. With her pot now marked, Vlimia started on the first step. "Chaw-den-sis." She said, moving her wand like the proffesor had shown them. When she was done, Vlimia felt the sides of her pot. They were starting to get warmer! Vlim could have jumped for joy, but she didn't. She simply grinned for joy. Vlimia took her gloves off the pot, thinking that the dragonskin might stick to it or something. Then again, a dragon's skin would probably be unscathed by heat, seeing as dragons breathed fire. Oh well, one never could be too careful. Vlimia crossed out the first step contentedly, thinking about how hard it would be to write with sticky gloves on.
Now for the last step! She looked over for instructions. She had to water the fire seed. And it was no surprise that boiling water was required!
But how to get boiling water? Oh yeah.. instructions were given. She referred her notes:

So very little water, enough to moisten the soil was required.
So she took a watering can and filled it with little water by use of Aguamenti spell. Then she heated the water up till it was boiling.
Then she watered the fire seed, careful not to add too much as instructed. She just sprinkled a little on top of soil to make it moist. Then she updated her journal:

Alright, gloves are on, goggles are on, now to heat the pot. Ella held her wand and focused on the task in front of her. "Chaudensis." With that she put down her wand and removed one of her gloves. She touched the pot gently and gradually the pot got warmer. Thank goodness. With a small smile, Ella crossed the first task off her list.

Okay, now the hard part of this lesson was coming up. Lewis could feel it already. They were done with the spell and now they were going to have to deal with those seeds. And plants. And he didn't have anybody to do it for him help him. No, he was going to have to do this all by himself. Le Siiiiiigh!
Quickly walking to the front to get a pair of goggles, he immediately put them on. You never knew after all. Okay, everything looked a little weird, distorted through those goggles but you know, safety first and all! On his way back to his pot, he accidentally bumped into a couple of pots and students, nearly smashing five if he hadn't caught them in time until he was finally safely back in front of his own pot.
Okay, here goes. Lewis first put his gloves back on and then reached for his wand again. Good thing they had practiced the spell first because it was going to be a hell of a lot more difficult to perform it with his gloves on. And his aiming seemed to be a little off too, what with the goggles and all. But no, he couldn't fail at this step already. That was the easy part. The spell part. He was good at the spell part.
So, taking a deep breath, Lewis grabbed his wand tightly in his right hand and - closing one eye as if he was trying to shoot an arrow with his bow - aimed it at the pot in front of him. Making a circular movement with his wrist he said loud and clearly, "ChauDENsis!" Had it worked? He put his wand aside for a moment and grabbed the pot with both hands but somehow he couldn't feel anything through his gloves. Was it safe to take them off? How else was he supposed to know if the spell had worked?
Making sure there was no immediate danger coming from anything close to him, Lewis quickly took off one of his gloves and touched the outside of the pot. Yup! Felt warmer than before. Awesome. While he was glove-less, he also crossed the first step off his list. Now, onto the difficult part.

I'm just one of those pretty little liars... | | I'm held down in this starless city...
She needed boiling water. Okay.
Taking a water can, Nora pointed her wand at it and mumbled "Aguamenti," waiting until it was filled with water. Pointing it again at the can, she heated the water until it started boiling, and then added just a tiny bit over the newly planted fire seed, taking care not to drown it. The soil was only a bit moistened, and Nora was pretty satisfied with her job.
Muttering a "Scourgify" as she pointed her wand at the can, she also pointed it at her gloves to clean them, but she didn't take them off yet, nor did she take the goggles off. You know, other were still planting and no one knew what could possibly happen.
While waiting for new instructions, she remembered that professor Bentley told them that they were free to mark their pot, so that was what she did, neatly writing Nora Reed on it. There. Her property, her fire seed, and no one would touch it. It was all hers.
LuLu touched the pot again and again it was DEFENTLY warm... enough anyways!
Onto the next step.. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up. She took the packet of soil and carefully put it into her pot, half way exactly Maybe not exactly but close''Hmmm...,'' Now for the next step...
Lewis squinted down at his list through his goggles in order to make out what the next step was. Get soil! Hey, he could do that. Or at least he thought he did. It didn't sound too hard after all. Maybe he wasn't so bad at this Herbology thing after all. Except he so totally was.
Making his way back to the front, very slowly this time, touching every desk he passed like a blind man, so he wouldn't bump into anything or anybody this time. Which he actually managed to do! Once he was at the front Lewis took one of the soil packets (?) and turned around to walk back to his desk.
Slooowly, slooowly, very slooowly!
He was actually getting better at this walking and doing stuff with those goggles on! Lewis then proceeded to empty the packet's content into his pot, every last bit of soil. And now he was going to have to wait for a moment. In meantime, Lewis reached out for his quill to scratch out the second step. He was almost half-way through!

Re-reading the instructions again, just to make sure she won’t forget one step, Gwen checked out what she had to do next. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up. This is… acceptable, she thought and was ready to start.
Even though it probably wasn’t necessary, the avenclaw tried to fill EXACTLEY half of the pot. She was going to plant this annoying little fire
making plant just perfectly.
I like the next part- wait ‘till it warms up. Not bad.
After writing down the steps in her journal, Pam took a deep breath and placed her wand over her pot. She had practiced a few times before, so she knew she would be able to complete the task. After putting on her gloves and her goggles, she started to slowly move her wand in a circular pattern, just like Professor Bently had shown everyone. After a little while, she felt the pot with her other hand, and it didn't feel warm. She didn't know if that was because of her gloves, or the pot itself wasn't warm, but she didn't want to test it. So she tried again for another minute or two. When she tested it again, she felt the warmth, and was satisfied. She replaced her wand in her robes for safe keeping, and went to the front of the room to grab the materials.
Silvia retrieved a pot and a pair of goggles. She put the goggles and her dragonhide gloves on, then glanced at the instructions on the board:
1. Charm pot to heat itself.
Okay, she thought. I can do this. She took a deep breath, pointed her wand at the pot, and concentrated on the spell. "Chaudensis," she said as she rotated her wand in a circular motion. She waited a moment and then removed one of her gloves and touched the pot. The pot seemed to be getting warmer. Seems good so far, she thought, then double checked the board for the next step.
