It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.

"Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis..." Alex said, saying the incantation along with the class. Alex always got antsy once they started practicing the incantations...he always found the pronunciation rather easy, so he got rather restless waiting for the lesson to go on. Ugggh, he wanted to touch some plants already!
Once he was sure he had the spell down he pulled out his notebook and scribbled down the instructions Bentley had given them.
Quote:
1. Charm pot to heat itself.
2. Fill half of pot up with soil and let it rest for several minutes to warm up.
3. Carefully take a single fire seed with dragon hide gloves and place on top of the soil.
4. Cover fire seed with soil, so that pot is filled. Pat the soil down a little (not too much, you don't want to suffocate it).
5. Water the fire seed with boiling water, without drowning it.

Lily wasn't sure whether she should be excited or not. She was going to lean a charm and how to plant a fire-seed. And since everyone else seemed to be chanting, Lily calmly and quietly spoke, "Chaw-den-sis..., Chaudensis." After she thought her pronunciation was good enough, She copied down the instuctions on the blackboard before waiting to receive further instructions.

Melanie began mumbling the incantation to herself, trying to block out the other mutters surrounding her like the persistent hiss of rustling leaves.
"CHAUdensis...ChauDENsis..." She went through several different enunciations before settling on the one she thought sounded most like the professor's.
She then wrote down the instructions and waited less-than-patiently for the practical part of the lesson to begin. Melanie couldn't wait to have her first hands-on experience with magical plants.

Yes, they were approaching her favourite part of class, the practical stuff. Even if she usually hated dirt getting all over her, she found a sort of enjoyment when it came to trying new things. So she could deal with it. Plus dating Zayden kind of helps. Seeing as she had also played in the duck pond, which she never would have done before him.
She quickly wrote down the note from the blackboard now:
Quote:
That done, she started practicing the incantation. "Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis... "Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis..." over and over again until she was sure she had it down.
It was a good thing her poor boyfriend wasn't here, or he'd totally mess this up and get frustrated.
After waiting a short while for students to write down these notes, Seren stepped forward to continue the lesson.
"Now before I get you to start the process, you first need to know how to perform the Chaudensis Charm. This will charm the pot to heat itself."
"Please DO NOT take out your wands just yet, I want you to practice the incantantion without the risk of blowing something up first..." she said eyeballing them all.
"Repeat after me... Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis..."
Seren observed and listened as the students practiced the incantation.
Thank MERLIN nobody had died in that fire! But that still left the question open why the Headmaster had found it necessary to mention the not-dying rule in the first place. Curiouser and Curiouser.
Lewis heaved a small sigh when the lesson continued and they started talking about plants and more plants and more plant-related stu- OH! A spell! He could do that. Quickly copying the plant-related stuff down into his notebook, he said the incantation in his head a couple of times.
Then once he was sure how to pronounce and ennunciate it correctly, Lewis said started muttering the word over and over again. "ChauDENsis. ChauDENsis. ChauDENsis. ChauDENsis." Hopefully they would partner up for the practical part. He could do the spell and the other person the...plant stuff.

"You're on the right track, but no we don't use manure for these seeds. Not until they're grown and even then only a minimal amount is required."
Seren nodded, yes obviously location was important for a number of reasons... but it wasn't quite what she was looking for, until..
"Ahh yes, certainly, the key is too keep the seed hot enough beneath the ground."
Erm.. "Well, yes, those are important, but I was asking about plant care not people safety." They had rules in place for that.
"It's generally a good idea to cool the seeds down before handling it, but in this case it would just place the seed at risk of not germinating."
Extinguish the fire?
Seren eyed her prefect. "Uhhh no, I wouldn't recommend that, the seed needs to be alight in order to survive and grow.... putting out the fire will only kill it."
"Ahh good point Kurumi, we most certainly do use water, but there's a trick to it, which we will get to," she said with a wink.
"You're on the right track, we don't actually fertilise fire seeds until they have germinated, and as for water, there's a special trick with that," she replied brightly.
"Sort of... we do use water, but there's a trick to keeping the seed active."
"Mm yes, that's why we have classroom rules, but I was thinking more along the lines of caring for the seed..." because plants were more important than students?
"Yes, excellent!"
"That's an interesting... and seemingly logical thought, though no, we do use water."
"Yes, that would be a very good idea..." following rules was sort of essential to not being kicked out of the classroom... but it still hadn't really answered her question. "I was asking more for what would benefit the seeds."
"Yes, I'm sure fire seeds... like others wouldn't appreciate being stepped on."
... Interesting response.
"Yes very good, temperature is something we definitely need to consider with these beauties."
"Yes, place is important, obviously fire seed bushes prefer dark, damp and more enclosed places."
... clearly. Or had the child not read the class rules before? "I was asking for from a caring for the seed or plant perspective."
Another SAFETY issue... "well yes dear, but I was asking how do we care for the seed or plant... not what's around it."
"That's an interesting point, but no we do use water... only there's a trick to it." Which they were going to learn today... obviously.
"You're sort of on the right track. Certainly the fire seed benefits from the darkness, but warm soil is essential for it to grow, as is water."
"Not a bad theory, but surprisingly, no, fire seeds need little nourishment."
"Yes! precisely, maintaining a high enough temperature for the seed to remain active is crucial to its growth."
"Not bad idea, but no... the fire seed requires very little nourishment."
"Nope, not in this case... we don't want to risk extinguishing the seed and thus killing it."
Seren smiled, amused by the idea. "I assure you dear the seed wouldn't be extinguished by moving too fast, the warmth radiates from within... it would take a lot more than a little bit of a breeze for it to burn out."
"Yes, very good."
"Yes, and no... it depends how you define special," she mused.
Resisting the urge to smirk, Seren simply nodded. "Well that is a good idea... I was asking more in terms of caring for the plant though."
"Right so aside from the common sense, follow the classroom rules regarding safety... gloves, goggles etc. there are a number of things we need to consider when planting fire seeds. They are not particularly high maintenance, but there are a few crucial things to remember. The first, is temperature. You do NOT want to extinguish your seed using the Glacius Charm or by drowning it in cold water. Secondly, fire seeds do not require much, if any nourishment... so fertilising is not required." Seren paused to let this information sink in and plant themselves in the students minds. She had a feeling some of them would be pleased to know there wouldn't be any dung involved this lesson.
"Now take a moment to read and note down these instructions, you'll need them soon enough," she said stepping to the side to let the light from the torches shine onto the blackboard.
After waiting a short while for students to write down these notes, Seren stepped forward to continue the lesson.

OOC: Practice the INCANTATION ONLY. Lesson will resume in approximately 12 hours.
Zayden had been silently taking notes in the back of the classes, away from EVERYone because he preferred it that way when he struggled with his studies, and kept a close eye upon the teacher. He scribbled all the instructions that were on the board on his piece of parchment in his, what his sisters called, "hippogriff scratch" handwriting.
Once the instructions were on his paper, he looked up at the Professor when she pronounced the incantation they were suppose to use and he just felt his heart pound against his rib cage. It wasn't just a small incantation he was suppose to recite either; it was a BIG one with lots of his words his mind would like to switch out.
Meh.
He whispered to himself now so nobody else could hear him, "Cahw-ned-sis..." No. "Cwah-dne-sis..." Again, no.
He raised his hand into the air now. "Professor, could you pronounce that one more time?" You know, for the dyslexics in the room... or maybe it was just him. *mellow* It was always just HIM. The odd one out. The black duck in a pond full of white ducks.

Now, they must practice the incantation only, an just only without their wands being held. He listened intently an tried to get the full sound of the charm.
"Chaw-den-sis.Chaw-den-sis.Chaw-den-sis." By this point he was beginning to sound like a broken record an the word almost seemed to not sound like the charm. "Chaundensis. There, that sounds good." he muttered to himself.

Keefer began scribbling down the notes. He could tell this planting would be very different from any other they had done in Herbology before. Once finished, he stored his quill and parchment in his bag, out of the way of the dangerous seeds that may start them on fire.
The pot will heat itself. It's amazing what magic can do. I wonder if my mum uses this in cooking? He would have to ask her when Christmas holiday came.
But for now, it was repeat-after-Bentley time. "Chaw-den-sis. Chaw-den-sis. Chaw-den-sis." Lather-rinse-repeat.
Nathan quickly jotted down the notes from the board:

Nathan then looked over the spell. It looked simple enough but now was just for pronunciaion, even easier, "chaw-den-sis", that sounds right, good enough.

Jotting down notes on her parchment, Kurumi tightened her pony tail for a brief moment before tackling the pronunciation. Chaudensis...that shouldn't be too hard, right? There were no L's or R's in there, so that already made the spell more manageable than some other spells.
"Chaw-den-sis...Chaw-den-sis..." she whispered, moving her hand in the air to help her create a rhythm as she spoke. Hmm, that first part was rather unsatisfactory to her, so she should probably focus on that bit more. "Chaw...Chaw...Caw? Chiyah?" No, those last two certainly did not sound correct. Kurumi took another deep breath and gave it another shot. "Chaw-den-sis....Chaw-den-sis....Chaw-den-sis..."
That sounded better, hopefully.

She listened to the pronunciation carefully before trying it on her own. Chaudensis... Chaw-den-sis. Seemed easy enough. "Chaw-den-sis," she repeated after Professor Bentley. Chaw-den-sis. Chaudensis, chaudensis, chaudensis. She repeated the spell over and over again in her head until she was sure she had it.

Kennedy turned to his parchment and began writing down what Professor Bentley had instructed them to. After writing all the instructions down, he set his quill down and listened to what they were going to do next.
"Chaw...den...sis," he said, pronouncing it slowly. "Chaw-den-sis." A little faster. Then when he finally got the pronunciation of the word he said it whole. "Chaudensis...Chaudensis...Chaudensis." Yeah, that sounded correct.

Oh, hey. Look at that. It was the kid from the Slytherin house table, the one who'd demanded she pass him a cupcake. He better be lucky he's of her kind, because had he not been, she'd have never done what she was about to do...
"Put these two sounds together," she said, turning toward him. "Shhh" ... "Aw." ... "Shaw." Kind of like telling somebody to be quiet and then getting sad and saying Awwww..."Then add den-sis." Kind of like a living room...and then having a sister. "Put it all together--Chaw-den-sis. Chaudensis."
So she wasn't the professor, but seeing as the boy was sitting right next to her and she could use the extra practice anyway, Sierra decided to do her good deed for the year.

Selena jot down the steps quickly on parchment, her quill scratching away in her loopy handwriting. "Charm pot to heat itself..." Selena muttered as she wrote down what was on the blackboard. Once she finished, she sighed. Rightios, now, incantation to heat the pot up itself. Hehe... blow stuff up... Selena wondered if she'd accidentally blow the pot up. Accidentally. Of course.
"Chaw-den-sis," Selena said slowly. Like most foreign, new spells, it felt odd saying the incantation out loud. "Chaw...den... sis..." Selena said again. "Chaw-den-sis," Selena continued to practice the new incantation for the charm, itching to pull out her wand and try it - just to see if the pot would blow up. "Chaudensis," Selena said again, clearly and in one word. As odd as it felt coming from her mouth, Selena was pretty sure she had it down. Now, just to see if the pot would blow up or not... hopefully not.

Now to practice the incantation. He cleared his throat. "Chaw-den-sis." he said. "Chaw-den-sis....Chaw-den-sis...Chaw-den-sis..." he said repeatedly.

Even though Stella had been quiet during the discussion, she hadn't been not paying attention. Especially as they were apparently dealing with fire seeds, at which point she was once again glad she'd pulled her hair back in the French braid before class. She also had been taking notes as quickly as possible, but she'd looked up from the parchment as they were told to practice an incantation. That was something she could definitely handle, as spells were her thing. Plus, she figured they weren't about to be faced by any pixies this lesson, or the baby elf, so she could relax. Although first she wrote down the instructions that Professor Bentley had written on the blackboard.
Text Cut: notes
Planting fire seeds
Once that was taken care of, she set her notes down and took a deep breath. "Chaw-den-sis," she murmured, making sure she was pronouncing it the same way the professor had. At first it sounded weird, because she felt like her voice wanted to sound French again, but after a few repetitions, she felt confident enough to speak louder. "Chaw-den-sis, chaudensis, chaudensis..." Now she just had to find out the rest of the details of the spell, and then she could get the rest of the practical portion of the lesson over with.

She had been about to assist the Slytherin Boy when Sierra beat her to it... ahh good, "Thank you Sierra," she said brightly as she continued to make her way around the group to make sure everyone was on task.
Everything sounded good to her.
"Alright everyone, now we're going to practice the wand movement."
She watched them all... that's right wands out. Keep with it!
Holding her own wand in front of her she bent her hand at the wrist so her wand was directed at the ground. "Now you want a smooth rotation, remember to bend at the wrist, there is no need to move your whole hand... a little too much force and the charm could go horribly wrong. Please aim your wand away from your feet and DO NOT repeat the incantation as you do so... we are ONLY doing to wand movement at this stage, you can perform the two together in the next step."
Seren continued to demonstrate by rotating her wand in a circular fashion, as if tracing a circle.
...
OOC: Hey! Just practice the wand movement ONLY for the time being, the lesson will resume in approx 12 hours with the practical activity. Thanks!

Zhenya had started feeling comfortable with the incantation, and as Professor Bentley had shown the class how to perform the wand movement, she grabbed hers out. She made sure her mouth stayed still, and she held out her hand, rotating her wrist to make a circular motion. She practised for quite a long time until she felt comfortable with that too.
