It was such a nice day outside, the weather was mild, not quite warm but not cold either, and it was perfect for the first lesson of the term. Seren stood just inside the entrance to greenhouse two, waiting for the students to arrive. It was fairly dark in here, with creeping ivy curling an crawling its way up the sides of the glass panels, but there was still enough light to see clearly.
Tapping her heel excitedly and stroking the moving tendrils of a nearby ivy, Seren waited patiently for the students to arrive. "Just form a group here please," she said to them indicating to the area just in front of her. Yes that's right... just stand there, no need for sitting just yet, or at all.
OOC: The lesson has officially started, do not announce yourself arriving from this point onward, just pretend as if you've been here the whole time. If you haven't done so already then please read through the Herbology Rules and Expectations and the SS Site Rules. All SS Board Rules apply. IC rule breaking will result in IC punishment, OOC rule breaking will result in OOC punishment. Please behave appropriately and most importantly... have fun. If you have any questions don't hesitate to send me a PM.
Well there were some unique answers there... even if most of it was pretty straight forward. "Right very good everyone, I hope you were all paying attention to each others responses, there were some interesting points made there." She wasn't about to go over it all again, nope, she had a head ache, so it was time to move on.
"So now that we're familiar with some of the uses of fire seeds, I want to share something with you." She braced herself... the memories from last term came back to her, what a nightmare. "Some of you will remember the fire that assaulted my research shed last term... well new information has come to light, and it was the result of fire seeds...." and a particularly snoopy baby elf. "Now as a result of this, we only now have this one Fire Seed Bush, now I have taken the liberty of replenishing our fire seed stores, so today, you guessed it, we'll be planting fire seed plants!"
Cue excitement, yes?
"Now if you'll follow me a little further for more instructions."
Seren motioned with her arm for the students to follow her deeper still into the dark, cold greenhouse.
Stopping at the very back in front of row of stools for the students to sit on, Seren ignited a few torches that were struck in the dirt. There, a bit more light. "Now does anyone have any questions before we get started?" she asked, moving her blackboard into view.
OOC: RP moving to the very back of the dark and cold greenhouse for further instructions. If your character has any questions about the Fire Seeds, NOW is the time to ask, if not then just sit tight and wait for further instructions. The lesson will resume in approximately 14 hours.
It felt nice to hear that Ira was right about the uses of Fire Seeds.. Smiling a little, she noted down the uses and looked back at the professor.
Research shed? Yeah.. Ira had heard about it last term. So the fire seeds were the culprit! Ira had hated to see Professor Bentley all sad after the fire, when her research notes had been burnt to ashes. So if fire seeds could set a shed to fire, weren't they considered dangerous? Ira raised her hand and asked, "Professor, can the fire seeds set fire on their own? If they can, aren't they dangerous?" And now they had to plant them!
Then according to instructions, she proceeded to the back of the cold and dark greenhouse, a little excited to plant fire seeds. Then she waited for further instructions
There was a fire last year? Melanie thought. She definitely needed to get all the way through Hogwarts: A History so she knew this more recent stuff too, although she wasn't entirely sure if something as recent as last year would be in the edition of the book she had. Perhaps it would be best to just ask some questions in the common room later.
Gathering up her things, Melanie began working her way to the back of the greenhouse. It was getting darker and colder with every step, and she was looking forward to starting their work with the fire seeds just so she could warm up.

Hannah was excited that they were finally getting some hands on. She followed her classmates towards the back of the greenhouse. Man was it just her or was it cold she thought as a shudder ripped down her spine. She waited for further instruction from the professor.
Silvia followed the group deeper into the greenhouse.
We're going to be working with fire seeds? Isn't that a bit dangerous? she thought. Oh well, maybe it would help her to warm up a bit, as it was getting colder the further in they went.

Ah yes, the crazy dragon snowball fire... thing. What a state that had put Bentley into! Keefer was surprised she could bring herself to talk about it so lightly and in a matter-of-fact tone. I guess time heals many wounds, after all.
His thoughts on the Quidditch Pitch, where he would hold a tryouts session in a few short hours, he followed Bentley further into the doom and gloom. He was tempted to ask if there was any danger of catching fire (either himself or the greenhouse again), but thought better of it and stayed quiet instead.
Carigan welled up with glee. They were going to plant fire seed plants? How exciting was THIS!? She kept her cool though, as the professor talked about them going further into the dark greenhouse. Darker? I can so do that! Carigan thought to herself.
"Yes very good, though you'd want to make sure the glass in reinforced otherwise it'll explode..." and that would be unfortunate.
"It most certainly does... when the plant dies, if the seeds are cooled too much or if its extinguished on purpose."

Cass nodded in understanding as she scribbled the new information onto her parchment, making a mental note to revise her notes after class. Just to make sense of it all. After all, she could barely see where she was writing.
She then glanced up from her makeshift notes and stuffed it back inside her bag, taking care not to crumple the thing before tossing her muggle pen into one of the outer pockets with it as the professor recounted the story about how she lost her research shed because of the fire seeds...wait, what? She didn't remember a fire last term! Well, granted, she didn't remember a whole lot of things last term. After all, she spent majority of the year in bed. Sick. Meh.
They were going to plant...fire trees? Right. Seems fun...hopefully, her hair - or clothes - won't get singed off. That was be, well; a pain.
Then, along with the rest of the class, she followed the Professor into the darker part of the greenhouse, her fingers gripped her wand in it's holster underneath her sleeve and bit her lip. Oh Merlin, she hated the dark. Hated it, hated it. Hated it. Thankfully, they didn't stay in the dark for too long as Professor Bentley lit a few torches around them, diffusing the darkness. Whew.
Questions? Nope. Well, except how were they going to plant the thing exactly...if it was on fire and could burn them...but she reckoned it would be explained later...

They were going to plant fire seeds. Lily wasn't sure about this. She didn't really have a green thumb and she didn't do well in the dark, well planting in the dark at least. How are we going to see what we are doing if it's so dark? Lily thought as she followed the professor. Lily wasn't so sure whether she liked herbology yet, and going into a dark greenhouse and planting dangerous seeds wasn't helping. But Lily wanted to make a good impression on all her professors so she just went along with it and followed the rest of the group.

Cardigan quickly copied down everything and pushed aside what had happened. It was simply a mistake. She had one question but decided to keep quiet.Sometimes, people should just keep their mouth shut, like Cardigan.
Gwen shook her head, her hair flying around her face, to show that she had no questions.
She'd never planted anything, unless you counted the sad, little Muggle plant she'd once had by her window that had died after a week because she'd forgotten to give it water.
Gwen moved along with the rest of the class further in to the dark green house, looking around at the different magical plants.

When Alyssa heard Professor Bentley's reply to her answer, she was disappointed. She was now beginning to realize that the more she thought outside the box, the more her answers seemed inappropriate. So Alyssa decided that she was just going to stick by the book and just give the appropriate answer and nothing else. So after writing down all the correct answer that the Professor had provided in her journal, Alyssa was about to follow the Professor further into the greenhouse, when she thought of a question. She was afraid to ask it but decided to risk asking one last time.
So she raised her hand and asked. "Professor, if the fire seeds are flammable, what prevents it from just burning up any time it wants? I don't want to bring back memories of what happened last year, but if the seeds were in the shed all this time, why didn't it burn up a lot earlier? Is there something that it has to react with, before it burns up?" Alyssa asked before following the Professor and the students further into the greenhouse.
She just hoped that the last question she asked didn't get her into further trouble. Alyssa was realizing that classes this term weren't going as well for her as she hoped it would be.
"Yes! they certainly do increase the fires temperature."
"Yes, very good."
... well that was unexpected. But the kid had a point. "Yes, certainly."
"They can be... yes."
"Yep, it's a very versatile seed, especially good for survival int he wilderness. As for firewhiskey you will find that traces of fire seeds are in fact present in the drink. Very minimal though... otherwise you'd probably end up with heart burn." .. or something else burning.
"Yes, correct."
"Yes, very good Kurumi."
"Yes, very good."
"Yes, very good Amelia," she replied smiling.
"Yes, very good Selina, quite often fire seeds were in fact used to heat the whole home."
"Yes, very good."
"Yes very good, though you'd want to make sure the glass in reinforced otherwise it'll explode..." and that would be unfortunate.
"It most certainly does... when the plant dies, if the seeds are cooled too much or if its extinguished on purpose."
"Yes all very good answers."
"Absolutely correct."
Seren smiled brightly at the enthusiastic badger. "Yes, very good."
Seren was slightly taken aback by the girls rudeness. This was HER lesson and SHE was teaching them about Fire Seed Bushes, NOT the Whomping Willow. "Five points from Ravenclaw for being rude. If you have a question not relating to the topic I suggest you see me after class, or better yet, check your textbook." ...
"Yes very good Justin."
"Yes very good, it's definitely a good fire starter." ... she knew that first hand.
"Good good, all very good."
"Yes... yes... and yes," she replied, smiling at the last answer in particular.
.... at least it was a unique response.
"Well... if you mean the seed would fall to the ground, bury itself in the soil, water itself and then grow... then yes, it's exactly like a phoenix from the ashes."
.. did she just humour the girl?
"Yes, very good."
Seren nodded, " yes, absolutely!"
... well that was blunt. "Yes, but there is so much more to them than just that."
"Indeed they are," she replied before hearing Louisa's question. "It's not naturally part of their diet, but it's sometimes used for treatment.. get the fire going again so to speak." ... she wasn't really a dragon expert though.
"Yes, very good."
"I wouldn't advise it, but it's not unheard of."
Merlin's Saggy Undergarments! ... this girl clearly didn't know how to refine her answers. "I suggest focusing on one aspect next time dear, or else you might go blue in the face." .. "But yes, you're mostly right, though I would refrain from introducing it to materials which are not reinforced." .. or else you'd end up with melted rubbery goop. "Light... yes, but as you can see it's not the most efficient source of light." .. the orange glow wasn't prominent enough to cut through the darkness as the single light source.
"Yes, you're absolutely correct," she nodded at the young Lion, Merlin she was an enthusiastic one.
"Indeed you can, good answer."
"Yes and yes."
... where the heck has this girl been? Staring at the flames too long? "Five points from Slytherin for not paying attention.... try to keep up."
Closing her eyes for a slit second, Seren then exhaled and turned back to the student. "We have already identified the plant as a Fire Seed Bush.. now focus please."
"Yes, very good."
"Yep, they most certainly are."
"Yes, that's correct dear."
"Indeed, both very good answers."
... and yet another student to ramble. Trying to focus on the girls speech, Seren picked out something she heard, not paying attention to the glacius charm simply because it wasn't part of the question.
"Yes, they're often used in potions, not only IN the actual brew but also the fuel the fire beneath the cauldron should you need a particularly high temperature."
"Light yes, though it's not a pure light so you're better off using another method. But certainly you can use it in potions and it has been known to be used in cooking... though I wouldn't recommend it."
... this girl had a scary streak, thank goodness she wasn't a Lion. "Yes I don't doubt that," Seren replied in a flat tone.... memories.
"Yes, well done."
"Yes you most certainly could, though its not a pure light, so you're better off using something else if you can."
Seren nodded at the boys second answer.. again with the Devils Snare, it seemed rather popular today. "Indeed."
"Yes, very good Harvey."
Seren nodded encouragingly. "Yes, very good."
Seren resisted the urge to giggle, but it was so hard, the little Lions answer was just too cute. "Indeed, that would be one of it's primary functions," she said winking.
"Ahh good question August, they're usually found in caves or deep in forests where there is little light and damp conditions."
Offering her Lion a smile, she then nodded at his response, "Yes they most certainly can be. Very versatile seeds they are."
"Yes very good on both counts, traces of it are certainly used in firewhickey to give it that umph factor and it's definitely a good source of heat."
Seren smiled and gave the Ravenclaw a nod. "Very good."
Seren stared at the Slytherin Quidditch Captain... a weapon. Ok, yes she had asked for unique, but this was borderline psychotic, no doubt Lafays influence. But the girl did have a point.
"I suppose you could do that... but you shouldn't." No... no encouraging bad behaviour.
Seren was rather impressed with her Prefects answer, he raised some good points. "Because of the energy emitted from the seeds they can be used in both medicinal potions and also poisonous ones.. it's more about achieving the right balance of chemistry..." but of course she wasn't a potioneer so that's as far as her knowledge went.
"You could certainly use it as a light source, though if it is bottled then yes, the flame would be extinguished eventually."
Again Seren found her senses being assaulted by the loud Lion girl. Merlin help her... but having said that, it wasn't all bad. An enthusiastic young mind was always appreciated, and at least this one probably wouldn't get scared off by a few flesh eating trees. Seren made a mental note to introduce the class to some shortly...
"Yes indeed, Slamanders feed on fire, and fire seeds a rich source.... in fire." Obviously...
As for having one in the dorms... um.. "No." "I don't think that would be a very wise idea, and aside from that it wouldn't survive in those conditions... but you're always welcome to come here and look after your own." .. yes her own. Because they were going to get to that soon enough.
"Yes, very good Alex," she replied brightly.
"Very good, very good."
"Yes, absolutely."
Seren smirked a little at the mention of marshmellows. Now there was an idea woth mentioning.
And then the real answers. "Yes, that's correct."
"Very good."
... Seren eyed the snake. Was she serious?
"Uhh yes."
Seren nodded at each of the boys responses... pausing briefly at the mention of weaponry. Geez these kids likes the idea of setting things on fire. "Yes, very good."
"Indeed, very good response Eino," she said nodding.
"Indeed very good response Sierra, its flames are not only the bi-product of their natural energy but it is also a defensive mechanism.. both for the plant and for us." All very good aspects to consider.
"Yep, definitely."
"That's a sound theory," she replied, amused.
... "Yes all very good." ... though perhaps just stick answering THE question next time. She ignored the part about cooling it down. It was more information than she had asked for.
"Yes indeed."
... Uh... were they studying History of Magic now? Seren blinked a few times, looking from the girl to the plant, then back to the girl. "Well yes of course there is a plant at Hogwarts, we're looking for it. As for your other information... I suggest you read an actual herbology book and not a history of magic one. Aside form that you did not answer the question I asked..."
How could one be so wrong?
"Yes they most certainly are, though only in small amounts."
.. no response from Thea? that was unlike her.
Ahh finally the girl got her act together and caught up. "You could do that... though you would have to be extremely cautious."
Well there were some unique answers there... even if most of it was pretty straight forward. "Right very good everyone, I hope you were all paying attention to each others responses, there were some interesting points made there." She wasn't about to go over it all again, nope, she had a head ache, so it was time to move on.

As Violet listened to all her peer's responses, Violet jotted down the uses of the fire seed bush on her parchment. At the mention of planting them though, it gave Violet quite a fright. It would be dangerous though wouldn't it? She then relaxed a bit. Of course, Violet has her dragon hide gloves though, so there is nothing to worry about. Violet followed the teacher to the back of the dark and cold greenhouse, sat down on one of the stools, and waited for further instructions. This was going to be very fun indeed. Violet raised up her hand, "Professor, all we are doing right now is planting some firebush seeds right now correct? I would just like some clarification of what we will be doing."

Aurora followed Professor Bentley and the rest of the class, smiling as she did so. Finally, back to planting! It had been far too long since she'd actually planted something... most of the time she was just pruning and clipping at home, and even that was rare - her uncle preferred to work in the garden alone, even when he wasn't living there.
But she had a question, "Professor, what happens to the fire seeds we produce at Hogwarts?" Did they all go to the potions and herbology stores? Or did they go elsewhere?

Janice still couldn't believe that the Greenhouse could extend more to the back. She was slightly amused as the group shifted to the very back part of the greenhouse to follow Professor Bentley.
Wow, she mumbled to herself, it sure is cold right here.
Sophie once again walked calmly, now to the back of the greenhouse. She had to admit the thing she liked the most about all of this herbology stuff was the smell of the earth. She really liked that. With a small smile, she got closer to the professor to be able to see what they were supposed to do and sat down in one of the stools.
Nate followed the professor and the rest of the class into the deepest part of the herbology greenhouse. Was it just him or did it get a bit cold back there?
Laura looked at the Professor. "Could I have some fire seeds to play with?" Laura was sure it would be great to give her sister Lana some and then they could have some fun though of course they wouldn't use them dangerously.

Amelia was glad that she had gotten the question right and she didn't have any questions about the seeds that other people hadn't asked, but she wasn't sure how she felt about moving deeper into the greenhouse. She had no idea what was in there, and what if something grabbed her in the dark?
I wish Zayden was here, she thought to herself, wanting her boyfriend around in case there was some evil plant lurking in the depths. She needed to get a grip on herself, honestly.

Salamanders fed on fire!!! Yes, she knew that!!! Such cool creatures!!! She could remember her brother telling her how cool and fiery they were and how it made himself so cool because his magical stick had a Salamander scale core. Lea frowned a bit. Too bad hers did not have that core. But who needed a stupid core when she could get THE ANIMAL ITSELF!!! As a naughty smirk appeared on her face, the expression got illuminated when she heard the rest of the professor's words. She could get her own Fire Seed Bush here??? ''Awesomeness!!!'' she exclaimed happily. ''Of course, better to have it in the conditions it would be happy to be.''
She could grow her own cool and pretty and glowing Fire Seed Bush and feed her Salamanders with the seeds. D'awwwwwwww. So cute. And while daydreaming about all this happy fiery moments, the little Gryffindor was unaware that she was missing half of the what the teacher woman was telling the class now.
She was only back to class when she motioned them to follow her deeper into the place. This class was rocking!!! Fire, dark places and more fire on torches. Yeeeeeeeeeeeeeey!!!! With a little happy smile, the girl's dark brown eyes shone as she watched the burning fire on the torches.
Did she have any question? Of course she had.
''Professor, what is the place of this piece of nature within the four main elements? I mean, you know; all seas, rivers, lakes belong to water quarter. Whatever in the air belong to air quarter. The sun, other stars and lawa belong to fire quarter. And, as far as i know, all plants with the crust of the earth belong to earth quarter. Yet this plant...'' she pointed the Fire Seed Bush ''...both grows on earth and is a source of fire. I am confused.''

Ella walked quickly through the greenhouse. She was starting to shiver and the lack of light gave the plants around her an eerie quality. Okay, focus El. Just because it looks creepy in here doesn't mean something is going to jump out and attack you... Ella looked around nervously as her mind continued to wander. You'll be planting fire seeds.... that could be dangerous. Pay attention so you don't mess this up. Ella rubbed her arms as she sat down, trying to warm herself up.

Wait, wasn't that an extra credit task last term? Or was she just remembering things incorrectly? Oh well. Sky followed the rest of the class towards the back of the greenhouse, shivering slightly. Why hadn't she brought a jacket?

"Yes, very good Selina, quite often fire seeds were in fact used to heat the whole home."

Score for Selina. When Professor Bentley had asked her original question her answer had been a shot in the dark. She had just made a logical assumption from the information that Professor Bentley had given her. She supposed it did pay to actually guess instead of just stay silent in a lesson. Lesson learned for Miss Selina Skylar.
She smiled at her Professor and followed her as the whole class moved. Now did she have any questions? Nah, she was good.

Had she been paying attention to everyone else's answers? Nope. They'd all been talking at once, it'd seemed, so it'd been kind of hard to tell one answer from the other. She guessed she could just catch up on anything she missed as the lesson went on, though.
Sierra kept up with the class, following in line with the sea of students who were making their way further into the greenhouse. Questions? Nope. Not her. She did hear something, from Hollingberry nonetheless, that she thought she at least knew a little about.

Like...if someone misaimed...could they accidentally kill the poor plant?
She raised her hand. "Doesn't the fire seed bush have to be on fire in order to live?" Sierra asked Bentley, responding to Hollingberry but at the same time asking a question of her own. She'd known of the fire seeds being used in a potion before, and that's how she'd managed to pick up the information. "I think the plant would die if all the flames went out, so I guess it's important we don't harvest all the fire seeds at once. I think that's why we only use the freezing charm on the seeds themselves--because freezing the whole plant might kill it."
