When not in use for classes, several of the greenhouses that are located on the school grounds are open for private and independent research and study. In fact, this is highly encouraged.
Within the unlocked doors of the greenhouses you will find rows and rows of plants. The greenhouses contain a wide variety of plants - both magical and mundane. Want to practice your pruning skills? Why not practice on the Abyssinian Shrivelfig of a Flutterby Bush? Or perhaps you want to harvest some Puffapod seeds- just don’t drop them! -- unless you want to of course.
In the cupboards you will find several shelves containing any equipment you might find yourself needing: trowels, cultivators, shears, protective goggles and the like. Also, in case you forgot your own, there is a cupboard which contains work robes and gloves in various sizes. As usual, you can find the fertilizer in a heap behind the greenhouses.
Remember Professor Bentley likes to take regular strolls through the greenhouse to check on things. So make sure you wear your protective gear and behave yourselves accordingly.

3 sing & dance to the ickle fireseed

Sing? She needed to sing next? Not only that, she also needed to dance? Oh Merlin this was going to be awkward beyond belief, especially since there were others in the greenhouses with her.
Quickly pocketing her parchment, Kurumi moved her fireseed in a pot away from the side of the greenhouse so she could more easily...sigh...dance around it as instructed. Kurumi looked around nervously, hoping that no one else was really looking at her. Which, they weren't, right? They were all working on their own pots and stuff, so maybe she wouldn't have her own audience...besides the fireseed that is.
Kurumi stood up and dusted off her clothing a bit, removing her gloves and casting Finite on her watering can. Now, what song to sing? It should be something plant related right? The fireseed would respond the most to that was the case. One came to her mind, but it was kind of old...but it was the only one she could think of at the moment. Taking a deep breath, Kurumi began to sing and dance around her pot.

I saw many kinds of flowers lined up in front of the flowershop.
everyone has their favorite kinds but all of them are pretty.
Without competing to see which was the best among them,
they were standing straight up proudly inside the bucket.
So why then do we humans have to compare ourselves to one another?

Kurumi couldn't be entirely sure, but she thought she saw the little sprout of a fireseed dancing along with her at the end. Then again, it very well could have been a trick of the light, it was rather dark in the greenhouse. Kurumi pushed the pot back against the wall where it had been when she had first come in and slipped her gloves back on.
Checking on her fireseed once more, Kurumi headed towards the front of the greenhouse and over to the cupboard to retrieve the bag of blood and bone mix and returned back to her pot. Why...blood and bone mix? That seemed rather morbid and creepy? Or, maybe it wasn't really blood and bone? Kurumi was going to have to pretend it wasn't or else she was going to have a very hard time putting her gloved hands into the bag. After catching Scourgify on them to make sure they were clean, she picked up a pinch of it and lowered her hand into the pot, sprinkling the mixture around the base of the little sapling, erm, bushling.
Once all the sprinkling was done, Kurumi closed the bag up and returned it to the cupboard. Now she had to tell the fireseed a story? Merlin...what sort of story was she supposed to tell it?! She would have to think about that as she slooooooooooowly made her way back to her pot.

Next Jory had to give the Seedling a light sprinkling a of boiling water. He filled a little vial with water. "Aguamenti!" he said pointing his wand at the vial &fulling it with water. Next, he made it boil. "Chaundensis!" he said clearly and the water started to give off steam.
Carefully, he picked up the vial, and gently poured the water into the pot. He poured enough so as just to moisten the soil a bit.
As soon as she made sure the place was dark enough for the Fire Seed Bush, Gwendolyn decided to proceed to the next step. Grabbing a watering can, the third year pointed her wand at it and said: ‘Aguamenti’, making sure she almost filled it. So far so good, she thought. ‘Chaundensis’, the girl said loud and clear and watched as the water started bubbling. That means it is boiling, right?
Then, carefully watering the soil around the planted bush, Gwendolyn realized the second step was done as well. Oh goodie! What is next?, she asked herself and tried to remember.

Minerva went into the greenhouse. She remembered to check on her fire seed which excited her that she was remembering this important step. As she walked in and went down to the cold and dark part of the Greenhouse where her fire seed was waiting she noticed more light then there was before. She didn't want her seed to not grow so she walked over to the Ivy. "Hello Ivy, do you remember me from class. Well could you please move around to make it darker in here. My poor poor seed can't handle the light." she smiled at the Ivy and watched it move around. "Oh thank you" she said jumping towards it giving it a big hug. It felt weird having the Ivy move around her arms and legs as if it were hugging back. She felt a little nervous she might not get out, but once she wiggled a bit the Ivy let her free. "Thank you again Ivy." Then she moved back to the pot with her name on it..
NOOOOOOOOOO!‘Nonono’, the girl said as she remembered what the next step was. Sing AND dance? No. I refuse to do it! However… that means I won’t get the house points. Grrr. Hard choice. Here goes…
*sigh*
What could be worse than this?, she asked herself and tried to think of a song. Anything will do. Got it…, the girl thought and then looked around, just to make sure NO ONE would hear her. Her voice was absolutely terrible. It wouldn’t be a surprise if the greenhouse windows would break…. explode… somewhat. Then, she started singing (absolutely terrifying) and dancing (more like moving and shaking her hands) around the plant.

’Enough is enough!’, she said and put her cold hands on her cheeks, which were turning red. This would be so embarrassing if someone spotted her.
After her singing episode LuLu was scarlet and when ever or what ever she did she was still bright red she'd probably never forget it.. ever! Pixies all over again huh?
Sighing, she put on her dragon hide gloves and goggles on once again ''Next step,'' she hummed, then went to the stored cupbored at the front of green house, opened the door and found a small bag of blood and bone mix, she skipped over to the plant and sprinkled it on the bushling's base...
Ira was still blushing red from remembering how she had sung and danced around her fire plant last night! Thank Merlins, that no one else had seen her like that at that time! Otherwise it would have been so embarrassing!
Still, she came back today to check up on her plant. Yes, it definitely was looking good and sprouting nicely.
She had read somewhere that a mixture of blood and bone mix was very beneficial to the plants. It provided the much needed nourishment for proper growth and development. So she looked around for the mixture. She went to the side walls and searched in the upper and lower shelves. But it wasn't there. It must be in the shelves by the entrance.. Thinking so, Ira went to those shelves and searched. There, in the lower shelf was a bottle labelled as 'Blood and Bone mix'. Yes, this must be it.
Ira put on her gloves she had brought along and took the bottle. Opening the mouth, she lightly sprinkled the mixture at the base of the plant, near the roots, careful not to burn her hands though she had her gloves on.

1. Ensure that it is in a dark enough area of Greenhouse 2. If not, then kindly ask the Ivy to block a bit more of the light out. Don't forget to thank it and give it a pat or a hug.
2. Give your Fire Seed a LIGHT sprinkling of water. Remember it has to be boiling hot water.
3. Sing a song to your Fire Seed and dance in circles around it. All plants need some entertainment for development.
4. In the stored cupboard by the entrance of the greenhouse you will find a small bag of blood and bone mix. Take a pinch of it and sprinkle it around the Bushling's base. Try not to burn yourself.
5. Read the Fire Seed Bushling a bedtime story of your choice and wish it sweet dreams.
"Alright little bushling! Last thing before you grow strong!" She smiled as she sat down with a book. It was favorite book. "I'm going to read you the Ugly Duckling!" She smiled and opened it beginning to read about the little ugly duckling.
"Once upon a time down on an old farm, lived a duck family, and Mother Duck had been sitting on a clutch of new eggs. One nice morning, the eggs hatched and out popped six chirpy ducklings. But one egg was bigger than the rest, and it didn't hatch. Mother Duck couldn't recall laying that seventh egg. How did it get there? TOCK! TOCK! The little prisoner was pecking inside his shell.
.......
"Poor little ugly duckling!" she would say. "Why are you so different from the others?" And the ugly duckling felt worse than ever. He secretly wept at night. He felt nobody wanted him.
"Nobody loves me, they all tease me! Why am I different from my brothers?"
Then one day, at sunrise, he ran away from the farmyard. He stopped at a pond and began to question all the other birds. "Do you know of any ducklings with gray feathers like mine?" But everyone shook their heads in scorn.

"It's a long story," replied the young swan, still astounded. Now, he swam majestically with his fellow swans. One day, he heard children on the river bank exclaim: "Look at that young swan! He's the finest of them all!"
And he almost burst with happiness."
When she was finished with the story, she sniffled, wipping her eyes. "OH...sweet dreams, little plant.." She blew a kiss to her little plant.

SPOILER!!: The tiger and the lion
The Tiger and the Lion.
One day a tiger felt that it was more powerful than the lion and wanted to challenge the lion. It went near the lion’s den and started shouting and making all kids of sounds. It was noon and the lion was fast asleep after a meal. The sounds created by the tiger woke up lion.
Who is there? Shouted the lion.
There was no reply but the shouts of the tiger increased.
The lion came out of its den and stood in front of the tiger that was shouting continuously.
Staring deep into the tiger’s eys the lion asked: Why are you disturbing me, you can go to any other place in the forest and shout as loudly as you can. But I never allow you to disturb me any more.
The tiger looked furiously at the lion and said: Look this forest belongs to all and so is this place too. You have no right to ask me to vacate this. I shall continue to be here and shout, as I like.
In the meantime an elephant that was passing by noticed the argument between the tiger and the lion and came.
‘Stop quarrelling. What is the problem. Let me know,’ demanded the elephant.
The lion explained the reason and the tiger stood to its stance. The elephant felt helpless to resolve their conflict.
Then came Dr.Dove. It has inquired from the elephant: What is going on here? Generally I do not see a tiger and a lion together?
The elephant reported the matter briefly.
That’s the entire problem? Yelled Dr.Dove.
The elephant was surprised at the casual attitude of Dr.Dove.
Don’t you think it is not a problem at all? : The elephant asked.
Yes it is very much a problem but not at all a difficult one to solve. The elephant got further perplexed with this response from Dr.Dove.
Dr.Dove now took the lead and starting flying in-between the tiger and the lion.
The tiger and the lion got disturbed with this.
Seeing them giving a pause to their loud arguments, Dr. Pigeon proposed: Dear friends you can solve the problem.
How both the tiger and the lion shouted.
Very simple the tiger can continue to shout and the lion can continue to sleep: said Dr. Pigeon.
You stupid Dr.Dove. You are fit only to pull out the thorns from the feet, clear dust from the eyes and treat cut injuries of the animals but not the problems like this – yelled the lion.
The tiger joined the lion and said: leave us alone we shall solve our problems ourselves.
No my dear friends, please listen to me.
Dr. Pigeon requested the lion to follow and enter the den quickly. The lion thought for a while and then followed Dr.Dove. As the lion entered the den, Dr.Dove took out two lumps of cotton from its kit and approached the Lion.
Mr. Lion please listen to me these lumps of cotton help you proof yourself from the sound pollution being made by the Tiger. Please place these lumps one each in to your ears and experience for yourself.
The lion did as suggested and both the lion and Dr.Dove came out the den silently.
Dr. Dove told the tiger: Mr. Tiger please shout as loudly as you can you will have no objection from the Lion.
The tiger shouted loudly and the lion felt no disturbance.
The lion retuned to its den greeting the Pigeon by waving its paw. The tiger got furious at this gesture and continue shouting at its best – also puzzled as to why the lion has become so calm.
Seeing this confused state of the tiger Dr. Dove told: Mr. Tiger I told the tiger of your power and advised him not to quarrel with you. You are more powerful than the lion. See the lion itself has agreed to it.
Tiger felt very happy and gently stroked Dr .Dove with its claw in appreciation of its help. Then Dr. Dove told: Mr. Tiger you should not stay here that too before a lion’s den. Because seeing you here other animals might feel that you are serving the lion. So I suggest that you should to that hilltop and live there.
Yes, Dr. Dove I shall follow your advice and I thank you for this: saying this the tiger proceeded to the hilltop.
The elephant was thrilled at this sudden change and astonishingly looked at Dr. Dove.
Dr.Dove fluttered its wings and flew towards south.
That was simple enough she grinned at the plant ''Good night, see you tomorrow,''

If Bentley said she needed to practice, that she will. Ariadne was determined to improve her Herbology skills, so she decided to focus on the most recent homework they had been assigned. The young Gryffindor made her way to Greenhouse 2 while reading her notes from the previous class, which stated that the first thing she was supposed to do was to check on her Fire Seed Bush.
Quickly locating it, she realized there was too much sunlight coming in directly on the little plant-thingy. That was bad. What was she supposed to do again? Oh yes, ask the ivy for help. Erm...easier said than done. How was she to address the plant? Considering that Ivy was a girl's name, it was probably a Miss or Mrs.? 'Madam Ivy, could you please move a bit to the right to block a bit of sunlight for my Fire Seen Bush here?' the girl asked kindly, waiting for the ivy to move. That it did, so it meant first phase was ready. 'Thanks for your help.' Ari smiled, thinking that plants were not so bad after all. She awkwardly patted the ivy (a hug was too much, let a Hufflepuff do that) and read on to see what she had to do next.
Now that Ira had put in the mixture, she kept the bag back in the shelf. TYhen taking out her gloves, she figured what to do next. No one else seemed to be in the greenhouse for now. And the plant looked like it needed rest. So she decided to tell it a story to put it to sleep.
A bedtime story.. she didn't remember too man of them. And she hadn't even brought a story book along with her. So now what to do? She just deided to make up a story then and there. She began her story.
"Today I'll be telling you a story. You wold like to hear, wouldn't you?" she asked the seedling. "So lets begin, shall we?"
SPOILER!!: Story Narration
"There was a Tree, which should have been brown and green, but instead was purple and pink and blue. Wizard Muddle scratched his head. He was trying to grow a tree by magic, but somehow it wasn’t coming out right. He knew a tree shouldn’t have a purple trunk. Neither should it have pink and blue leaves.
So what next? Ira thought about it.. She continued..
He walked around it. He prodded it. He waved his wand at it and the tree suddenly turned into a rose bush. It was still purple, with blue and pink leaves. The roses were purple. He shook his head, and turned it back into a tree.
He walked around it again. He waved his wand at it again, and this time it turned into a toadstool; still, purple, pink and blue. He hit it with his wand and it turned back into a tree.
“What’s the matter with you?” He demanded. “Don't you know you should be brown and green?”
He jumped a foot in the air when the tree said crossly, “You made me like this.” “Don't blame me.”
Could the trees even talk? Not that Ira had any doubt about it.. But still..
“I didn’t know you could talk.’’ He whispered. “I'm sorry, but I can't make you grow other than in purple, pink and blue.” “I don't know what to do.”
“Some wizard, you are!” laughed the tree. It looked at itself up and down, waving its branches to study the colors.
“Hmm, actually, wizard, I don't mind being different.”
“You don't mind being purple?” Muddle asked incredulously.
“No.” “So just keep me like this”
And so, Wizard Muddle was the only person in the forest to have a tree that was purple, pink and blue, and like the tree, he decided that he quite liked being different.
In fact, he painted his house purple, pink and blue!"
So Ira finished her story. Wow! Her story even had a moral. That was good.
She sighed. Good, now that she was done with her story, she was happy. She could now go back to her dormitory and take some rest before doing homework, which was a lot!
So she smiled at her seedling and bade it good bye, "Bye my sweet plant! See ya soon. Real soon!". And then went out of the greenhouse.

Ella sat down in front of her bushling and smiled. "Ready for a bedtime story? My mum used to read me some of Aesop's Fables before bed and now I'll read one to you" She opened the book she had brought with her and cleared her throat.
"The Dog and The Shadow
It happened that one day a Dog had managed to get a hold of a piece of meat and was carrying it home in his mouth to eat it in peace.
Now on his way home he had to cross a board that was lying across a running brook. As he crossed, he happened to looked down and saw his own shadow reflected in the water beneath him.
Thinking this was another dog who had another piece of meat, he made up his mind that he wanted to have that too!
So he made a snap at the shadow in the water, but as he opened his mouth the piece of meat he was carrying fell out, dropped into the water and was gone. The dog went home with nothing."
Ella smiled down at the little bushling when she was done reading. "This story tells us not to be too greedy. I hope you liked it. Now have sweet dreams, little plant."
With that, Ella headed back to the castle. She stroked some Ivy on her way out the door. "Thanks for keeping my little plant in the shade."
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Grab blood and bone mix from the cupboard? Where was the... Daichi looked around towards the entrance of the greenhouse and walked towards the cupboard. He hadn't taken off his gloves yet so he should be fine. Opening the cupboard, the Slytherin looked inside to find the bag. Which one..which one..AH! Smiling, Daichi picked the bag up and walked back to his fire seed.
Opening the bag of blood and bone mix, he carefully picked a pinch from the mixture and sprinkled it on the base of the bush. Done sprinkling, he tied the bag again and walked back to the cupboard to store it in. And as he walked back he took off one of his gloves to grab his parchment to read the next step ahead.

Jezzabelle made her way to Greenhouse three. She had everything she needed for this project of her. As she walked in she took a deep breath and smiled happily. Down at the very end sat her Rose bush and her Amo-Securusena. She placed her bag down and headed back to the front of the greenhouse to the cupboard she had seen when she walked in. Well, Professor Bentley did say she could help herself to anything she needed. She pulled out her wand and said, "Wingardium Leviosa." The bag of soil levitated in front of her. She grabbed two medium sized pots and placed a watering can inside them. Making her way back to the other end of the greenhouse she smiled. This was going to be such a great surprise.

Sammy didn't even like plants. Why was she here? Doing homework? WEIRD. She was only here for two reasons: she quite liked the herbology professor, she was nice. And she wanted to improve her performance at school and if that meant getting her hands dirty then she wouldn't be happy about it but she'd still do it. She pushed open the door to greenhouse two and looked around. There was a bunch of kids doing their homework as well but she was here to do her's, not stare at people telling plants fairytales.
Okay. Let's do this. HOMEWORK. ATTACK THE HOMEWORK. YAAAARRRRGGGHHHH. She soon enough found her plant from class. It had her name on it ... so it was awesome. So what did she do now? Lick the plant? No. That wasn't what she had to do. She looked around at the rest of the greenhouse and at what some of the other students were doing. Gosh it was dark. OH THAT WAS RIGHT. It had to be really dark because the plants were part vampire or something. Maybe. Sammy didn't know. She looked up the ivy, it was very rudely not covering the spot where her plant was. That wasn't good. WHAT IF HER PLANT SHRIVELED?! "Uh. Excuse me. Mister Ivy ... or Miss Ivy." she started, how could you tell if a plant was a guy or a girl? "Could you move so my plant is in the shade?" she asked, feeling ridiculous. Crazy people talked to plants. The ivy didn't move. "please?" she tried, and then moved, almost reluctantly to give her plant shade. Could it sense she didn't like it? Probably, most people could. "thanks" she said reaching over and stroking it lighting a couple of times, yeah. She felt like she belonged in a looney bin.

Minerva went up to her little pot. "Hello little seed. I think I'm going to call you chuck." she giggled not sure why chuck. "Are you thirsty Chuck?" Minerva got the watering can and placed her gloves on so not to burn herself with the boiling water. She pointed her wand "Aguamenti" the water filled in the can. Then she twisted her wrist in a circular motions "Chaudensis" she felt the can getting hot through her gloves. "Ok Chuck here you go." she smiled as she pour just a little water on the seed. "Not to much don't want you to go swimming."
Staring at her rose bush she sighed. The soil was moist enough and she needed to do this. She lowered the bag of soil and stored her wand back in the holster. Gloves. Jezz pulled her gloves out and put them on. She filled each pot up halfway with soil and then went into her bag again. Out of it came a small plastic baggies of a sparkling dust. Taking a pinch she sprinkled it on top of the soil in each pot.
Now for the more complicated part. She dumped her precious little baby out onto the work station. "I love you so much, but I need half of you." She pulled her wand out again and said, "Diffindo." The rose bush was cut in half. Placing her wand down she pulled out another small plastic bag. In this one was a root powder her grandfather had given her. Sprinkling a little on each she watched as the roots began to move. She picked one up and placed it in one pot and then placed the second in the other. She stared intently as the moving roots dug down and began to bury themselves into the new soil.

Looking at what was next Angelina saw it was time to get the bag of bone and blood mix, and she had to put a little around the fire seed.. without getting burnt. Angelina shrugged her shoulders, laided her things down and headed twoard the front entrance of the greenhouse, where the store cupboard was.
While looking inside she found the bag of bone and blood mix. She picking it up and moving it carefully to her pot. Once there she took a little bit and started to sprinkle some around the bushlings base. She did this slow to make sure she didn't burn herself. Once she was done, she stepped back to look at the bushlings base, to see if she did what she needed to do. By the looks of it she has. Angelina then took the bag of bone and blood mix and placed it back in the cupboard for the next person.

Still with her gloves Minerva picked up the pot. "Chuck how does it feel to have the water? Would you like a song?" She started to rock the pot just a little baby moving around in a circle, careful not to drop the pot, and sang "Rock-a-bye seedling, in the treetop
When the wind blows, the pot will rock
When the bough breaks, the pot will fall,
and down will come seedling Pot and all." she smiled at the silliness, but hoped chuck was liking her singing. She was still rocking the pot like she would a baby and started to sing again. "Rock-a-bye seedling, in the treetop, when the wind blows, the pot will rock, when the bough breaks, the pot will fall, and down will come seedling pot and all."

4. In the stored cupboard by the entrance of the greenhouse you will find a small bag of blood and bone mix. Take a pinch of it and sprinkle it around the Bushling's base. Try not to burn yourself.
Silvia peered into the cupboard for the blood and bone mix they were supposed to add. Having found the bag, she returned to her pot. She pulled out her dragonhide gloves and slipped them on to be safe, then picked up a little of the mix from the bag and sprinkled it around the base of the fire bush sprout. As was part of her nature, Silvia made sure the mix was as evenly spread on all sides as possible. "There you go," she said to the plant, then pushed the pot back into the dark corner before removing and storing her gloves and returning the bag of blood and bone mix to the cupboard.

Next step. What was the next step? Sammy didn't know that either. She wasn't in a very knowledgeable way today. It sucked. As long as Everett and Katie were no where near her she'd be fine being an idiot. She quickly reached inside her pocket for the piece of parchment that had the homework instructions scrawled on it. Unfolding it she quickly read over it. Water it? But it was a fire plant. Why did it need water? Wouldn't it need fire? She continued reading and discovered it had to be boiling water which made a lot more sense. She folded the piece of parchment up and put it back in her pocket before picking up her bag and going digging for her gloves. She didn't want burnt hands, she'd have to go to the hospital wing WHERE THE SCARY NURSE WAS! She didn't want to go there again. She grabbed a can and placed it next to her pot before putting on her gloves and pulling out her wand. Putting it into the can she said "Aguamenti" and the can filled with water. Then the boiling spell. She moved her wand around the edge of the can in a circular then said "Chaudensis" and it boiled. NAILED IT. She then picked up her can carefully and poured a little of it over her plant. "don't drown." she instructed it as she put the can down and pulled off her gloves.

Yay story time! Angelina loved books. She was very happy she could now read to her plant. The hard part was trying to find a story to read. Getting down to get her bag keep thinking of what she might read. Opening her bag she found a few books she kept with her. The one she saw, she knew it would be perfect. It was a big book with 100 short stories she got from her brothers wife. It was full of muggle stories, none that most wizarding people would know. She hasn't finsihed the book quiet yet. She would only take it out on a lonely day to read something short, and to have her think about threw the day.
Taking out the book she loved threw the pages to find a good story to read to the plant. Finally one page 45 she found a story, a story to have meaning to it. There she put the book in a nice spot and got confortable for the very short time she would read, and began:
"The Tavelers and the Sea," Angelina said reading the title.
"Two travelers were walking along the seashore. Far out they saw something riding on the waves.
'Look," said one.' a great ship rides in from distant lands, bearing rich treasures!"
The object they saw come ever neearer the shore.
'No,' said the other, 'that is not a treasure ship. That is some fisherman's skiff, with the day's catch of savoury fish.'
Still nearer came the object. The waves washed it up on shore.
'It is a chest of gold lost from some wreck,' they cried. Both Travelers rushed to the beach, but there they found nothing but a water-socked log. Do not let your hopes carry you away from reality" Angelina shut the book and placed it in her bag. Once it was placed in side and closed she smiled and looked at the plant.
"Hope you enjoyed the short story little one," she said, "Hope you sleep well tonight!" And with that she got up waved her plant goodbye and left the greenhouse.

Minerva put down the pot. "Ok Chuck I will be right back." she got up and went to the stored cupboard and found the bag of blood and bone mix. She pinched up some happy she had her gloves on the thought of bone and blood made her stomach turn. Walking back to her plant she smiled "Ok Chuck I am going to give you some food now." Minerva went close to the base line feeling the heat through her gloves and sprinkled the blood and bone mix around it. "Now you will grow strong."
