The old Divination tower, which has recently lay bare, and unused, is today open again for business. The empty classroom has been opened, dusted, cleaned, and is now welcome for the students to come along. The desks have been laid out in an unusual pattern, in a large semi-circle, facing the front, allowing for demonstrations to occur in the middle.
The visiting speaker, Vanessa Paton Healer Intern, is sitting at the front, next to a couple of boxes of equipment, awaiting the arrival of the students. She is very excited about teaching the students, as the topic is a favourite of yours. Behind her, is a blackboard with some instructions charmed on.

Kurumi thought for a moment, once again going with one she knew and settling for just answering with one of what the woman had asked for and its function. "One is the veins, which take blood back to the heart," she said after raising her hand.

The blood vessels! Ellie knew this too. Her hand was up in the air again. She knew all three blood vessels, but she would only name one. To give the other kids a chance too, you know.
"One of the kinds of blood vessels are called arteries. They pump the blood away from the heart and through the veins and muscles all around your body." Which was good, or else you would die. Uh-huh.

Aww. Vanessa liked the little action that the girl used to describe how the heart pumped. It was a very good visual for the rest of the class. “Correct, and I like your demonstration.” It was a good way of getting the students to understand, without confusing them. “Do you just want to repeat it? So the rest of the class could see.” And so they’d understand how the heart pumped. It was good that they would, because the heart pumping was a vital part of its function.
Ella smiled at Healer Paton. She was now blushing slightly at being asked to demonstrate for everyone. She stood up hesitantly so everyone could see her and then repeated what she had said before, louder this time. "Like many of you have said already, the heart's job is to pump blood around the body. It has muscles that pump the blood and it helps if you think of the heart pumping the blood like this-" She made a fist again with her small hand and squeezed tight then let go, squeezed tight then let go. She smiled at the healer before sitting back down. Then she thought about the question being asked.

She knew this, well she was pretty sure she did. "Healer Paton, there are the arteries, veins, and-and capapillars?...no that's not it. Something with a c though!" She closed her eyes, trying to remember the name. When that failed, she tried to think of their uses. "I know that arteries and veins carry blood to and from places in the body but I still don't know about the-well, the c things..."
"Now to supply the body with blood, there must be a system that is used. The system that is used within the human body is called the blood vessels. There are three different blood vessels. Does anyone know what they are, and what they do?"
Louisa raised her hand, "There are three kinds of blood vessels, ma'am." It was a bit formal to call her that but... whatever. Mrs. Paton wouldn't be right. "The arteries which carry the blood from the heart, clean high with oxygen blood, to the tissues. The capillaries which are the tiniest vessels of the three, they enable the exchange between the oxygenated blood and the tissues that need the compound. And then there is the veins which carry the blood that has just given its oxygen and was left with CO2, they carry this blood back to the heart." Muggle knowledge all over the girl who was smiling. This class was very exciting already!

So...Vashti obviously didn't know as much about all this as many of the rest of her classmates did. Perhaps Healing really wouldn't be a good choice if students even younger than she was already knew this much. Still, she was going to stay for the rest of this seminar thing. Maybe something would come up that changed her mind.
Three different blood vessels? Erm... She slowly raised her hand. "I think two of them are called veins and arteries?" No clue what the third one was though. And she was going to add that what they did was carry blood to the rest of the body, but she had a feeling the woman was looking for more than that, and she'd only look stupid for answering with that. She already felt foolish for not knowing most of this stuff. So Vashti's hand went back down.

Smiling and nodding his head when the Healer told him he could call her Healer Paton, the Slytherin listened to the next question.
He turned his attention towards the Hufflepuff (Ella) who he had seen in front of Williamson's office. He looked at her demonstration of how the heart worked and it did help him visualize. Giving her a quick smile and thumb up he turned back to the Professor..errr..Healer.
There were more blood vessels in his body? O_o he had always thought there were only veins... Well, it was one of the answers so he slowly raised his hand in the air. "Veins is a blood vessel..but i don't know what it does..'' he ended in a mumble as his cheeks flashed red and he lowered his arm again.
By now,Iira had decided that she didn't ever wanna be a Healer, if all they were going to discuss was blood and body et al. But then, what else does a Healer do? Whatever it was, Ira wasn't meant for it. She hated the blood and all of it.
However she knew the answer to the question asked. She raised her hand up and answered, "The three types of blood vessels are arteries, veins and capillaries.. actually aren't there 5 types, if arterioles and venules be included in this list?" Yeah, she had read that.. Elaborating a little, she continued, "Arteries and arterioles transport pure or oxygenated blood from heart to various parts of body while veins and venules are the opposite. And the capillaries are the link between arterioles and venules and they hlp blood reach the cells directly"

Arya traced creatures along the surface of her desk a bit distractedly, though she was giving the woman her attention. She had no interests whatsoever in becoming a healer, but she knew that knowing more than one spell would be necessary for after she graduated for more reasons than one.
But right now she had nothing to contribute to the lesson, so she listened.

Amelia's knowledge of this part was even fuzzier than that of the heart itself. She tried to remember what Zayden's mother had told her about this stuff. She raised her hand now. "Well, there are the veins which take blood to the heart. Arteries are another type. They work with veins in a way, because they take the blood away from the heart." And there was another one that she was sure she was missing.
She scratched her head as she thought about it for a moment. Then it came to her. "Then there is the capillaries, which are the tiniest ones. I believe they have something to do with oxygenated blood and tissues?" She had absolutely no idea.

Minerva put up her hand. "Professor there are three different types of blood vessels. There are arteries that carry blood away from our hearts to the different parts of our body. Then there are veins that carry non-oxygenated blood to the heart. The third is capillary tubes that join arteries to the veins."

Alyssa raised her hand and answered."Ma'am, the system is called the Circulatory system because it circulates the blood throughout the body. The three different blood vessles are the veins, the arteries and the capillaries. When the blood leaves the heart filled with oxygen, it flows throughout the body via the arteries. On it's way back to the heart, the blood picks up carbon dioxide and this gets passed through the capillaries, which is the the second set of blood vessels.
The capillaries supply blood to all the organs of the body. It also connects the arteries to the veins, which is the third type of blood vessel.
The veins then carry the blood throughout the body back to the heart."

Violet raised her hand ready to answer the professor's next question even though most people have answered already, "Professor, there are the veins, which carry non-oxygenated blood to the heart for oxygen restore, then there are the arteries which carry oygenated blood to the various parts of the body, and the capillaries which connect the arteries and veins together, but also exchange water, oxygen and other nutrients around the body."

The Healer seemed nice, but quite mild. Oh well, maybe it was just her official Healer personality. You never knew these things. Oh, a question! Hmm... well the circulatory system had to be the system she was talking about, and Vlimia knew the three major types of blood cells. She raised her hand and said "The circulatory system is composed of the heart and blood vessels, including arteries, veins, and capillaries." Vlim answered once she was chosen. "Our bodies actually have two circulatory systems: The pulmonary circulation is a short loop from the heart to the lungs and back again, and the systemic circulation sends blood from the heart to all the other parts of our bodies and back again." She added. Well, those were a few solid facts. Vlimia smiled politely at the Healer.
"There are veins, arteries and capillaries," answered Hades seriously with his hand still in the air. "Vein carry blood into the heart while arteries carry 'em out. Capillaries being the smallest exchange oxygen, water, nutrients and other stuffs between blood and tissues," explained the boy not-so-briefly at the same time he lowered his hand.

Keefer raised his hand. "Arteries take blood away from the heart. That's how I remember it. Arteries Away." Like bombs away, but definitely not the same. "Veins bring it back to the heart. Then the capillaries connect the two together." And he was sure they did something else, but he couldn't remember what, exactly.
Messer couldn't help to grin when the healer said that his answer was correct. Who knew that his not so light reading would come in handy.
When Mrs. Paton asked them the next question, Messer raised his hand "They are arteries, veins, and capillaries, Ma'am." he said. "During blood circulation, the arteries carry blood away from the heart. The capillaries connect the arteries to veins. Finally, the veins carry the blood back to the heart." he added.

"Now to supply the body with blood, there must be a system that is used. The system that is used within the human body is called the blood vessels. There are three different blood vessels. Does anyone know what they are, and what they do?"
Zhenya raised her hand again "Madame, the blood vessels are arteries, which are leaving the heart, which turn into the smaller arterioles, then they turn in to capillaries, and then they turn into venules and veins. The thing with Arteries is they carry oxygenated blood and they are quite muscular and thick because they are directly after the heart where the pressure is at its highest, but the pulmonary arteries carry deoxygenated blood to the lungs. Then their smaller arterioles are important for regulating the pressure of the blood, and the volume, so that it can fit into the capillaries, where the red blood cells line up in a structured line to fit through the small walls, which is the place for exchanging nutrients and getting rid of waste products for the lymphatic system. And then there is the venules which take blood from the capillaries to the veins. The veins are more elastic than the arteries, which in itself is somewhat of a problem for the flow of blood from the legs all the way up to the heart. That is why the veins have valves in them which stop the blood from pooling, and keep it moving forward. Unlike the arteries, the veins carry blood to the heart, and except for the pulmonary circulation, the veils carry deoxygenated blood," she said to the Healer. Hopefully that would be her in a few years. She was certainly doing a good job with all the many students.

As soon as the Professor… erm- Healer asked the next question, Gwendolyn raised her hand. ‘Veins, arteries and capillaries’, she said simply and then tried to remember what each of them did. ‘Veins carry blood towards the heart and ummm… arteries carry blood away from the heart. They look quite alike… veins and arteries, but arteries are more muscular. And the veins are normally closer to the skin’Don't muggles take blood from the veins for varous tests? Hmm...
Only after she finished talking, the third year realized she didn’t say anything about the capillaries. ‘Capillaries connect arterioles and venules…’And they are the smallest blood vessels, she thought, but didn’t say it out loud. I said enough, Gwendolyn decided and waited eagerly for the next question.
Awww! This student looked really excited. That was good. Vanessa was glad that they were excited about her lesson. Knowing that the students were going to understand the subject would make it much easier, and more fun to teach. Vannie thought that was a very good thing. “Yes that is very correct.” Vannie nodded with a smile. He seemed to know a little bit about the subject, which was good.
”You can call me Healer Paton.” Vanessa said first as she smiled at the student. It was kind of cute, that he didn’t really know what to call her. She figured it must have been difficult, considering that she wasn’t a Professor, and the students probably called most of their teachers professors. “And yes, the heart is a pump.” A very important pump. The heart was vital for the body. They would find out about that later, and how it related to other things she’d be mentioning
Ooh. Well this young girl seemed to know a lot about the topic. Vanessa smiled as she listened to the student. “That is right.” She nodded with a smile, making a fist herself, so she could kind of judge the size. “The fist of each person that is.” Because well her fist sized heart would not be big enough for someone twice the size of her, but hopefully that would be pretty obvious to the students
Vanessa was a little surprised at how much the students actually knew. It was very good. Sure they were in a wizarding school, but knowing about the body was very important, especially if any of them wanted to be healers. “That is true. It is very important. We’d be dead without our hearts.” Which really did make them very important. They would be nowhere without their hearts
”Correct.” Vanessa smiled at the young student, surprised at the depth of knowledge he had, considering that he did look very young. “I’d say it’s the most important organ though, because without the blood flow to the other organs in the body, I doubt that they would work, as they need the oxygen to function.” So the heart really needed to be strong and efficient.
Aww. This student knew a little fun fact too. That was good. “It’s hard for the heart’s muscle to regenerate after it’s been damaged.” She nodded in agreement with a smile. “That’s why it’s important to get help fast if you think someone’s heart is damaged.” Because the faster they got help, the more of the heart that could be saved. “And yes, the human heart beats between 60 to 80 beats per minute, and that’s considered pretty healthy.”
[coolor=seagreen]Ahh. Another student that was very knowledgeable about the subject. Vanessa smiled, as she listened to the student. “Very good.” She nodded, not really needing to say much more. The girl had gotten most of it after all. Hopefully the other students were listening to what each other were saying, because it was very important that they understood the subject
And another student that knew a lot about the subject. Maybe they could come up here and assist her in her teaching. It seemed very good that they knew a lot already. “You know a lot…it’s very good.” Vannie nodded with a smile in the girls direction. She was impressed by the students’ knowledge. The lesson was going to be really good. Vannie was looking forward to the rest of it
Professor? Aww. Vanessa was no Professor. But it was nice to be called that. “Yes, we’d not be able to function properly.” She agreed with a smile. “Without our heart, all the other parts of our body wouldn’t get the vital oxygen it needs, meaning we’d probably lie down all day. And that’s not very productive now is it?
”Yes. That is true.” Vanessa nodded with a big smile. All these students seemed pretty knowledge about the subject, which made her happy. “A single blockage can cause that part of the heart to die, which can cause major problems as the heart may not be able to work as efficiently.”
Vanessa smiled at the next student that answered the question. She’d kept her answer short, but that was okay. She had answered, and that was all that had mattered. “Correct, it is very important that the rest of the body gets blood. It’s vital for the functions of all the other organs of the body.”
”Correct.” Vanessa nodded with a smile in the direction of the next student that had spoken. “Without the heart, the other organs wouldn’t get that oxygen, which would cause all sorts of problems.
Aww. Now. This students answer did tickle her a bit. Once your heart stops you die or become a vampire? Vanessa laughed, smiling at the student. “Well…that is interesting.” She nodded with a little grin. “But I’m not too sure that we become vampires once our heart stops beating…” Because well there was not that many vampires around. Although it would be pretty funny if people became vampires once their heart had stopped. Vanessa would’ve liked to see that
Vanessa smiled as she listened to the next student that spoke. “That is correct. The heart never stops, meaning that it has to be a strong muscle, because from the day that you are born until the day that you die it has to bump blood around your body. Meaning that if it’s not strong enough, it might not work so efficiently, which can cause other problems.”
Vanessa smiled at the next student, liking how eager that the young student seemed. “That is true. It is very important to the body, because of how it sends the blood around the body. Without the heart the vital oxygen wouldn’t get to where it needs to get, and waste would be stuck in the body.
”Very true.” Vanessa nodded with a smile. This student had talked about the brain, which was an important organ too. “It is important that the brain gets a good blood supply, because the brain controls many different ways our bodies work. So without a good blood supply, there would be major problems there too
Vanessa smiled as she came to look at the next student that had spoken. “Very true.” She nodded with a big smile on her face. She was glad that the students knew things about the heart. It would make the lesson flow better. She liked it.
Ahh. The prefect was answering now. Vanessa smiled as she listened to the girl speak. She looked a little timid, which was cute. Maybe she didn't know that much about the subejct. "Yes. Chambers are the correct words! And yes, the heart is located in the middle of the chest, just a little to the left. I'm glad you said that." She nodded with a smile, using her hand against her chest, as an example, so the students kind of got what she meant.
Ahhh. It seemed that all the students had finished answering. Perfect. ”Well. It seems you all know quite a lot about the heart, which is very good. As some of you have said, the heart works as a pump, supplying oxygen to all organs, and cells in your body. This is important because without Oxygen, many of the activities that your body does would not occur." Vanessa paused for a moment, waving her wand at the blackboard behind her. The previous instructions disappeared, and were replaced with a list of the functions of the hearts. The students could copy those down if they so wished.
"Now to supply the body with blood, there must be a system that is used. The system that is used within the human body is called the blood vessels. There are three different blood vessels. Does anyone know what they are, and what they do?"
Quentin raised her hand, "The Capillaries exchange gases, sugars and other stuff to tissues around them, right?" she thought she'd read that somewhere, but she could have been wrong. It wasn't like she was a healer or anything, she was a little to squeamish. Cutting people open wasn't really her thing, she was fine with dissections and stuff but anything more just freaked her out.
Ahhh. It seemed that all the students had finished answering. Perfect. ”Well. It seems you all know quite a lot about the heart, which is very good. Daisy grinned, this lesson was kinda fun. Maybe she would be more interested in a career as a healer, but if that meant potions NEWT with Lafay, maybe not. She was sure she'd also learnt about this at some point, probably in that long summer in which she stayed away with relatives, without her broom, and only a load of books to keep her company. She raised her hand. 'Arteries carry blood away from the heart, and give blood with oxygen in to the rest of the body. It's easy to remember that, because they both begin with A. Veins carry de-oxygenated blood to the heart and lungs, to pick up oxygen and go back round. Capillaries are tiny vessels, with walls only one cell thick, that link these up, and they also carry blood and things in the blood.' She thought for a second before carrying on, 'Veins also contain valves to help the blood flow back to the heart and lungs. Arteries have a thick wall of muscle, while veins have a more proportional wall size to their whole size.'

And there was another one that she was sure she was missing.
She scratched her head as she thought about it for a moment. Then it came to her. "Then there is the capillaries, which are the tiniest ones. I believe they have something to do with oxygenated blood and tissues?" She had absolutely no idea.
Vanessa nodded as she listened to the next student answer the question. She seemed to know a good amount too, which made Vanessa happy. Maybe some of these students wanted to be healers once they graduated. That would be very exciting! “They do. They carry the blood directly to the tissues.” She nodded with a big smile on her face.

”Correct.” Vanessa was very happy with the knowledge that she students had. It would definitely help when she moved on with the lesson. That was a very good thing indeed.

This girl seemed to know a good amount too. That was very good. Vanessa smiled, nodding as she listened to the student. “Correct…” Which was very good. Hopefully the rest of the class were listening to each other, because they’d be able to learn a lot from each other

Moving to the next student Vanessa listened to his answer. She laughed a little at his way of remembering what blood vessel took blood away from the heart. “That’s a very good way of remembering.” She smiled, “I shall have to use that too.” It would come in very useful

Vanessa nodded as she listened the next student, who again had a good knowledge of the subject. Vanessa was very surprised, and happy. The students of Hogwarts were very good. “Correct, well done.” Very well done

Vanessa had thought the others had a good knowledge base, but this student knew an awful lot. Vanessa smiled, nodding as she listened to all of her good knowledge. “You do know an awful lot.” Vanessa grinned at the young girl. She was very impressed. “All correct. Well done

Vanessa smiled as she listened to the next student, who seemed pretty eager to answer. She was glad that the students seemed to be interested in the class. It meant a lot. Vannie was very passionate about healing, and was very glad to pass on her knowledge to the younger generations. “Correct.”

Turning to the next student, Vanessa smiled as she listened to what they had to say.”Correct.” She nodded with a nice smile. “But the returning blood goes back to the heart before it goes to the lungs.”

”Correct.” Vanessa smiled with a nod. Every student here seemed to be pretty knowledge, or at least knew a little about the subject. It was very good.

"Yes, well, one of them are the arteries...and they carry the blood out from the heart." Mmmhmmm. Yes. That's what they did, basically. And there were a bunch of arteries too, but wasn't getting into it.
Ooh. It was vampire boy. Vanessa smiled, listening to his answer. “Yes. That is correct.” At least he didn’t say something about vampires. Because that would be really going off topic. Although, she wouldn’t mind talking about sparkly vampires. Maybe she and this student could have a discussion later?

Aww. This girl seemed eager to answer too! Vanessa smiled at the girl as she listened to her answer. “That is correct. The arteries are a vital part of the circulatory system”

Awww. This student was so cute. Could Vanessa take him home? She was sure nobody at Hogwarts would do. “Yes, Veins are a blood vessel.” She nodded with a smile. She would explain what they did in a little while. It didn’t really matter that he didn’t know what it did. She was here to teach him after all

It wasn't like she was a healer or anything, she was a little to squeamish. Cutting people open wasn't really her thing, she was fine with dissections and stuff but anything more just freaked her out.
”Yes. That is what the capillaries do. They’re the smallest blood vessels, so they are able to exchange gas. This is vital, so that all the tissues get the oxygen that they need.” Vanessa nodded with a smile at the young student
Once it seemed that all of the students had finished answer, Vanessa pointed her wand at the blackboard, getting it to compile all their answers together in a list, so that they would be able to write them all now. ”Well done. You all seem very knowledge about the subject. It is very good. You should give yourselves a pat on the back.” Very impressed she was. ”As some of you have said, there are three types of blood vessels; Arteries, Veins and Capillaries. They all have a very important role to play, and are very vital.” She paused, turning her attention to the blackboard, to make sure it would copy down what she said.
”The arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. That means that the blood in them is carrying oxygen, which is important because all the parts of our body need oxygen. The walls of the arteries are thick, full of muscle and elastic layers. This is because there is high pressure within the arteries, because of the bumping action of the heart. So it is vital that the arteries walls can withstand this pressure, because if not…they could explode. And that would not be good.
Next is the veins, which carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart. That means that the veins carry the blood without oxygen back to the heart. They have thinner walls, because the pressure within the veins is high, but the veins also have valves. These valves are very important, especially within the legs, because they stop the backflow of blood. If our veins didn’t have valves in, all the blood would probably end up pooling in our legs, and that would not be too good. At all.
Finally there is the capillaries. These are the smallest blood vessels in the body. They form a tissue bed with every tissue, and organ within the body, and this is where oxygen and nutrient exchange occurs. These blood vessels are very important because within them, all our cells wouldn’t get the vital oxygen that they need. So. Very important. Does anyone have any questions about the blood vessels? Because Vannie realised that there was a lot of information there, and she didn’t want to confuse anyone.
She waited to see if anyone had any questions, before she moved on. So we’ve talked about the blood vessels, but do any of you have any ideas of why it is so important that our vital organs get a good supply of blood?

Zhenya had a quick think about the importance of a good blood supply to the vital organs, such as the heart, and raised her hand, "Madame the vital organs need a rich supply of blood because it provides them with oxygen and glucose, and other vital nutrients for functioning. If the blood supply was in any way compromised then the tissues composing the organ would begin to damage and eventually die. The blood also carries the hormones which can be really important in the regulation and control of organs, and communicating between organs and systems, such as the brain and kidneys." she explained.
