The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again when he became a staff member at Hogwarts and now after his leave Professor Roslund maintains it - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items and supplies.
Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Roslund is a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues and his mentor with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.
Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Roslund. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.
In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Roslund, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.
During last year (term 29) the Observatory was destroyed by a house elf. Professor Roslund has restored it to it's previous state so there should be no dangerous stuff around. If you do find something peculiar then go straight to Professor Roslund and tell him about it, to not endanger your peers.

After observing the constellation Phoenix for a few more minutes, she glanced at her watch and wrote the time with the corresponding task she had accomplished on her parchment. When she was done, she walked back to where the telescope was when she heard someone talk. At first, she did not think the question was aimed at her but when she turned around, she found out that the girl was looking at her.
Help her? Hmmm..Beezus took a quick look at her parchment that was placed on the table and back at the girl. She still had almost six hours before she's even going to start searching for Venus. "Sure. What can I do?" she asked the girl as she nodded. Then she felt like introductions were necessary since they'll be working together over the night. "Err--I'm Beezus. How about you?"

Alyssa decided to come back to the Observatory to study the constellations again. This was really the best place to do it because it was in the highest part of the castle plus the Professor had all his star maps and reference books here. She took out her Star Reference Guide and turned the pages until she found what she was looking for. Today was October 10th. Tonight she would look for the Constellation Aquarius.
Alyssa quickly took removed her telescope from its carrying case and immediately set it up next to the window, with the tube sticking out and pointing into the clear sky up above. Alyssa quickly ran over to the star maps to confirm that the Constellation Aquarius would be visible today. She studied the formation of the stars before returning to her telescope and started adjusting the viewfinder and lenses until the stars seemed to be just within reach of her.
Alyssa scanned the skies, moving her telescope slowly back and forth until she spotted a formation that looked just like the one she had seen in the star maps. She quickly drew out the formation in her journal before running back to confirm whether the formation she had seen and drawn was indeed the Constellation Aquarius....and indeed it was. "Yes! Another Hit" Alyssa said to herself before running back to her telescope to note down the position of the Constellation Aquarius in her journal.

Alyssa continued to admire the formation of stars that formed the Constellation Aquarius for a few more minutes before she decided to pack up as it was getting late. Folding up her telescope, she placed it safely in its case before she placed in her it's bag and slung it back over her shoulder. Taking one last look up at the stars, Alyssa turned and made her way back down the stairs of the tower and down to the Hufflepuff Common Room.

After sending a quick message to Sophie through her owl, Marigold, Tayla headed to the observatory with her permission slip from Professor Roslund, in case someone asked what she was doing there after hours. She had gotten excited about their stargazing assignment and couldn't wait to start. Tayla stood behind a small telescope next to a large star chart and decided to begin.
"Beautiful," she said, alternately looking out the windows of the observatory and through the small telescope.
After a while, she wondered what she ought to look for. She was just a beginner at stargazing, and the large chart next to her looked a little complicated.
Shaking her head, she remembered something she had read about before coming up to the observatory. "Polaris. The North Star," she said aloud to herself.
Tayla wondered if she could find it. "I can find it if I find the Big Dipper first...and the Little Dipper..."
But Tayla wasn't sure how to use the telescope very well. "I should remember to ask the professor for help next time..."
Feeling a bit disappointed about the telescope, she decided to look for the Big Dipper just by gazing out the window. A few minutes after, she found it. "Hmmm...but where's the Little Dipper...Polaris at the end of its handle..."
Tayla kept her eyes in the sky, once in a while still using the telescope as best as she could.

Another day of Stargazing. Raven really love this! It was October now. Raven had ever read in book that in October, she could see many beautiful constellations at the sky. After she reached the observatory, she set up her telescope.
"Lens Focalis." she casted the spell that could focused the lenses. Then time to stargazing! Raven started searching the constellations by her telescope, she moved it to the northen hemisphere and she could see the beautiful Aquarius there
"Cool ne!" she shouted. Then she took her journal

As soon as Sophie got the owl from Tayla, she went up to the observatory, with her permission slip in her pocket, just in case. She was really excited to start stargazing, but wasn't sure about what to do. She had stargazed before back home, but she didn't have to do anything with it afterwards. Actually, Sophie didn't even know if they were supposed to take notes about it or anything. Maybe Tayla knew whether they had to or not...
Sophie found her new Gryffindor friend already using the telescope. "Hey, Tayla! How are you?" she said smiling and waving as she approached. "It's a good night to stargaze, isn't it??" she said looking up at the sky. It wasn't hard to spot many, many stars without the help of the telescope. "Do you know what we have to look for?" she asked, still looking up. "Oh, look! That brighter star right there!" she pointed. "Do you know which one it is??" Sophie didn't know any constellation's name. The only real thing she knew about stars was that they were shiny and really pretty. Oh well, that was enough to make her like them!
Sophie stepped closer to the telescope and tried looking through it. Her eyes twinkled as the stars looked bigger and brighter. "Wow, this is so pretty!!" she said glancing at Tayla.

"It isn't particularly bright, but I remember reading it's the brightest star of the Little Dipper..." Tayla continued, half to herself and half to Sophie.
Tayla looked towards the direction Sophie was pointing. "Hmmm..."
Tayla smiled as she recognized the star her friend was referring to. "Hey, I think that's Polaris! It's at the tip of the Little Dipper. And it is brighter than the other stars in the constellation."
Tayla nodded at Sophie's cheerful comment. "Yes, very pretty! Do you know how to spot constellations, Sophie?"

Tayla nodded at Sophie's cheerful comment. "Yes, very pretty! Do you know how to spot constellations, Sophie?"
Polaris? That was a cool name! Sophie stood there for a few seconds, just looking up. "Interesting how stars and stuff have names!" she thought smiling.
She heard as Tayla spoke as if she was just thinking out loud. Oh! She had found that Polaris star?? Cool! Sophie's smile widened and she kept staring up at the brightest star. The Gryffindor had said that it was at the tip of a constellation, so Sophie tried to spot the rest of it. She frowned when she couldn't figure anything out, just stars and more stars. "Actually, I don't!" she said looking back at Tayla when the girl asked the question. "You said that was the tip of Little Dipper, but I don't see the rest of it. Do you??"
Sophie then stepped up to look through the telescope again. She tried to spot that Polaris star she had found. Maybe it would be even more beautiful seen through the telescope!
Treyen had made sure that it was already night before coming to the Observatory, since he was carrying his telescope then he doubted that Scabior could take any points from him now.
Granted, he'd made sure not to talk to anyone on his way to this tower, nor to talk to anyone in here as well. Merlin knows if the HoM Professor was waiting around the corner to make his unexpected appearance.
Once in the Observatory, he placed his telescope near one of the windows and...that took him a while, but he was soon looking for his notes and charts to search for whatever he wanted to see up there. It was easier to find than just stargazing for fun. Having a purpose made it all better.
Telescope set. Notes and charts....hey! Got it. He'll be looking for Vulpecula. Why? He wanted to start small. Plus, it was one of the constellations you got to see during September, so...bring it on!
Eyes on the charts one last time before finally looking through the telescope...well, once he'd set the telescope straight, that is. Okay, so, now it seemed like he was actually looking at something that appeared to be the constellation he was looking for...of course, it was almost 10 pm, he may have missed the time when one saw Vulpecula oh-so-clearly...maybe, maybe not. One tap at the telescope and the 'lens focalis' spell they learned last year...and...there it was! It looked just like it was supposed to...according to textbook descriptions.
He stood there for a few moments, probably 20 minutes or so, watching the night sky, before realizing he should be taking some notes of his own, right? Which he eventually did, before deciding it was time to head down to the Common Room once and for all. He had been in here for almost an hour...
...and he didn't even notice.
So, the telescope was put away, same as the notes and charts, and then he took one last glance at the sky before stepping out.
Sophie then stepped up to look through the telescope again. She tried to spot that Polaris star she had found. Maybe it would be even more beautiful seen through the telescope!
"Yeah!" Tayla agreed when Sophie mentioned about stars having names. "I wish I could name one after someone. My grandfather maybe..." Tayla thought of Grandpa Ric, who had passed away before she started studying at Hogwarts. She missed him very much. "Who would you like to name a star after?"
She looked through the telescope again and tried to move it towards Polaris, so she could see it up closer.
"You helped me find Polaris, Sophie. Thanks!" she continued cheerfully, refusing to feel sad about Grandpa Ric. "I'm not so good with constellations, but the Big and Little Dippers aren't too difficult to find. Here..." Tayla turned towards the large star chart on the wall next to her and pointed at the constellation called 'Ursa Minor'. "That there is the Little Dipper, composed of seven main stars. There are the four that make a sort of rectangle that looks like the dipper's head...and then the three that make the handle. I don't know their exact names except Polaris, right there at the very end of the dipper handle."
The night that he couldn't sleep was the night when Hades decided to go stargazing. Unlike before, he was no longer panting as he was already got used to walking up to the higher level of the castle. As expected, the observatory was empty. Whatnot, it was nearly midnight. Nevertheless, the blue eyes were wide open unlike those who were dozing off on their beds in their respective dormitories. Alone he was up there, he wasn't afraid. So what if Peeves suddenly popped up? Hades could threaten the poltergeist that he was going to tell the headmaster that Peeves was disturbing his study.
There he was setting up his telescope towards the south. Hades bended his knees and looked into the eyepiece before he started observing. Then, he took out his Spruce wand from his pocket and tapped it on the eyepiece. "Lens Focalis," muttered the boy and he tested the view on the eyepiece again. Ah... Much better! The view of the south... Nothing much as he hoped. However, something did catch his eyes. It was Orion which was an easily detectable constellation.

Olivia has missed a class in astronomy and came up to the observatory to brush up on her skills. There would be no one there at night, so Olivia would actually get a chance to studdy.
She gazed out from a telescope posted near by another student who happened to be up there. She was able to see venus quite clearly, there was not a cloud in the sky! She brought out her book and began analyzing the position of venus. She noticed other constalations too. "Its cool how we can see the whole of Orion and not just his belt" She said to the boy.

Startled by the voice talking to him, Hades took his eye off the eyepiece and turned around to see who else was there. His face was almost pale because of the cold weather added by the shock he just had. "Yup," he replied briefly as he moved the telescope angle a bit. "It's actually quite easy to spot Orion, you know? After you find the belt, look for his knee on the lower right. It's the bright star called Rigel. Then, look for Betelgeuse on the upper left of the belt. It's red-orangish in colour. And then..." he said moving the telescope to see the lower left of the belt. "Find Sirius," smirked Hades.
"I'm Hades Vaughn. Fourth year," Hades introduced himself to the girl. She looked younger than him. Now back to stargazing, the blonde moved his telescope somewhere to the east of the Celestial Equator. Several minutes passed and he saw Monoceros. "You see there?" he asked the girl, pointing to the sky where he spotted the unicorn earlier. "That's Monoceros. It's a unicorn."

Tayla hoped Sophie would see it.
Sophie had never thought about that. "I really don't know who I'd name it after..." she said looking up at the sky again. They have already stated it, but it was indeed a beautiful night. The stars above seemed to be as happy as Sophie was, twinkling and shining away, like they were having a party! Sophie smiled and looked back down at Tayla when the girl spoke to her.
"Oh, you're welcome!" Sophie giggled. She had helped Tayla without knowing it! That was cool. She looked once more through the telescope and smiled again at the pretty stars that were beaming with joy. Sophie felt really good and happy. It was a beautiful, beautiful sight.
When Tayla explained to her about the Big and Little Dippler, she looked at the chart the girl was indicating and heard interested. "I see..." saying that, Sophie looked back up at the sky and started searching for those other stars, trying to spot the complete constellation. Since she had already found that Polaris star, it shouldn't be that hard to find the rest, should it?
Without using the telescope, Sophie stared at those stars around Polaris with her mouth half-open for a while. She pointed up. "Are those it??" she asked. She could see some stars that were somewhat in the position that she had seen on the chart, but she wasn't sure if they were the right ones. "There are two smaller stars kind of... under Polaris." she frowned. The other four stars Tayla mentioned seemed to be a little harder to spot. Sophie looked at the star chart to check. Memorizing the other stars' positions, she stared at the sky again, trying to find the last four stars. "Oh! I think that's it!" she smiled and almost jumped up and down. She didn't do that though; she might lose sight of the first constellation she had ever spotted if she jumped. Instead, she just kept looking with a big smile on her face. "That's SO cool!!" she said clapping her hands together as her eyes sparkled.

What part of Orion is Serious? the girl asked as she tilted her telescope to the lower left. His tail? Olivia understood what he meant, and saw a star that may have been the one he was talking about, but she wanted clarification anyway.
Im Olivia Wenesko, Second year. Nice to meet you . She peered through once more, Saturn was visible as well and she squinted while trying to see more planets.
Olivia looked over at Hades when he said you see there, thats monoceros the unicorn. It does look like a unicorn she replied after gazing through the telescope once more. There were other patterns she could see near monoceros Whats that squiggely line beside it? she inquired.

Sirius in Orion? Ah! She must've misunderstood it. "Sirius isn't part of Orion," he shrugged. "It's another constellation to the lower left of Orion. Sirius is known as the brightest star in the night sky," continued the elder student, resting his arm on the telescope. When the girl introduced herself, Hades' guess finally met the answer. She was indeed younger than him.
Then Olivia mentioned the squiggly lines. Hades peered through his telescope again and gazed at the direction the second year pointed. However, Hades didn't answer immediately. He gandered for almost a few minutes, observing the constellation before flicking through his textbook. "That must be Hydra," he smiled and then yawned. He was already getting sleepy, but he would force himself to stay up for another hour.

Another stargazing time. Raven loved to stargaze and shen did it at least once a month. She prefered to do this long-term assignment rather than doing homework. Well... It's also called homework by the way..
After she reached the observatory, she prepared all of the things that she need. Telescope? check. Quill? check. Astronomy books? check. Okay~ Then she set the telescope.
"Lens focalis." She tried to use telescope. She hoped she could find something interested and saw the pisces constellation. After a moment later, she found the Pisces in the northern hemisphere. She knew it was pisces because she had read about that in her Astronomy book.
"Wow.."

"Yeah, I think you've spotted it!" Tayla was pleased to see Sophie so happy and excited. "I wish could do the wand-writing spell properly so I could trace the constellation for you, but I'm still not very good," Tayla said.
She turned towards the star chart again. "I want to try looking for my constellation. I mean...I was born August seventh. So that makes me a Leo. But I'm not sure if it appears during this time of the year..."
Tayla looked out the window once more and stared at the stars. The constellation Leo would be somewhere near Ursa Major or the Big Dipper, but Tayla couldn't spot it. At least, she couldn't connect the stars well enough to form it.
"What's your star sign, Sophie?" Tayla asked as she continued her search for the constellation.

Sophie smiled. "I was actually thinking about the same thing! I wish I could draw a line in the air for you to tell me if that was it!" She wasn't sure if that was Little Dipper, but she was happy about what she had seen anyway.
Still looking up at the sky while Tayla said something about being a Leo, Sophie didn't look down to reply. "I don't know anything about these things... I was born on May eighth. What does that make me?" she wondered if her Astronomy textbook said anything about that. She hadn't read it yet, so she wouldn't know a lot about... okay, she didn't know anything at all about Astronomy. Good thing she was stargazing with Tayla!
After staring at it for a long time, Sophie decided to try and find Little Dipper using the telescope. She looked through it and raised both of her eyebrows. It all looked so different! All of the stars seemed to be gigantic and she couldn't figure out which one was Polaris. "Gah! I can't find it with the telescope!" she said moving it around, trying to point it towards the constellation she was looking at before.

"May eighth. That makes you..." Tayla thought for a while. "A Taurus. A bull." Tayla looked for the constellation on the star chart then pointed at it. "There. That's Taurus. Leo's a lion by the way."
Tayla looked out towards the sky again, still looking for Leo. "It's so hard to find constellations sometimes. Connecting them together and knowing which star belongs to the group...I hope Professor Roslund will teach us about finding constellations."
She stared at the stars and wondered how people first figured them out anyway. And knowing that Muggles gazed at the stars, too, wondered how similar or different Astronomy was for them and the wizarding world. She decided to ask the professor when she got the chance.
Tayla turned towards Sophie when she heard the Hufflepuff start tinkering with her telescope. "Do you want some help?" Tayla asked with a smile. "Telescopes are tricky to use sometimes. What are you looking for?"

"Oh, cool!" Sophie said, even though she didn't know what that meant. "Interesting! You're a Leo, a lion, as you said, and you're in Gryffindor! Is there a relation of any kind?" She asked after glancing at the chart Tayla was pointing at.
Looking up once more, Sophie agreed with what the older girl was saying. "Yeah, I don't know how people manage to find such things!" She had just been lucky enough to spot Polaris. She didn't even know what Polaris was until Tayla explained it to her. "I wonder if Professor Roslund will make us actually find some other things..." As long as they didn't have to stargaze by themselves, Sophie was okay with it. If she was to look up at the sky on her own she would be totally lost and would never find a thing. "Have you taken Astronomy before? How does Professor Roslund know that we have actually found something? Or he doesn't?" How was he to know if the students weren't just making things up?
She went back to trying to find Little Dipper with the telescope. "I'm trying to spot Little Dipper! I wanted to take a closer look at it, but it seems impossible!" She couldn't deny that, even though she didn't know what stars she was looking at through the telescope, they were all very pretty. And actually... that was what she really cared about.

"I'm not sure, really," Tayla replied when asked about Professor Roslund. "I think he just wanted us to appreciate the stars."
Tayla moved closer to Sophie and helped her with the telescope. "Hmmm..." she said as she looked for the Little Dipper again. "What I like about the Little Dipper is you can see it any time of the year."
After a few moments, Tayla found what she was looking for and let Sophie look through the telescope. "There you go."
Tayla decided to stop looking for Leo and tried to spot any other constellation she could find. The night was perfect.
She again turned towards the star chart on the wall. "September...October..." she muttered. "Cygnus. The swan!"
She glanced at Sophie and said, "Want to help me find another constellation? It's called Cygnus. It's a swan and looks like this," she pointed to the star chart. "It's supposed to be out during these months."
Tayla stared at the sky and tried to connect the stars. "I find it more difficult to use the telescope, to be honest," she said. "Although I like using it from time to time."
Messer made his way toward the Observatory to do some star gazing. He also bring his own telescope.
When he reached the observatory, he was panting. Its a very long way from his common room to this room. He took a few minutes to catch a breath, after he wasn't panting anymore, Messer looked for a perfect spot for star gazing. Then he put his bag down and took out his telescope. Its November, Messer remembered that his father once said that November often considered by many astronomers as a phenomenal mythological lineup of the stars.
The first constellation he was looking for was Andromeda. Its one of the constellation that is more captivating to the naked human eyes. Messer observed the Andromeda constellation for about 10 minutes or so. Its very fascinating.

Appreciate the stars? Sophie could do that easily! She smiled while looking up again. It was a good thing she was just eleven years old, her neck wouldn't be sore from looking up for so long!
Sophie watched Tayla do whatever she wanted to her telescope. "Oh, really? That's nice!" So she would be able to keep on checking on the very first constellation she had ever spotted whenever she wanted! Cool! When Tayla told her to look through the telescope again, Sophie did it eagerly. "Is that it?" she asked excitedly, still looking at Little Dipper through the telescope. "Lovely! It is so, so beautiful and ginormous!"
She heard Tayla talking about the swan constellation, but Sophie still stared at Little Dipper for a few more seconds. Well, the Gryffindor girl said she would be able to see it any time of the year, so she finally looked at what Tayla was showing her now. "A swan! That sounds even more difficult to find!" she said, raising both of her eyebrows. "But sure, let's look for it!" And saying that, Sophie looked up at the sky without using the telescope.
"I know! The telescope makes everything so gigantic that it totally messes me up." she giggled. Maybe she would get used to it if she spent more time stargazing.
India had this feeling that finding the constellations in the skies above her head would make her feel good, better about herself. Better about the fact that she was still forever single, a loser, and really just a no body. Everyone thought she was either mean - or crazy.
Everyone but the one guy who, everyone else who cared about her. Namely Matt tried to warn her off of.
Who cared what Matt thought really he didn't have a choice? He wasn't a part of her life really - sure he was a friend, but he didn't have to control her like a little piece on a chess board.
But the stories they were bad. Glancing up to the sky she just sighed, "Oh where to look today" she sighed as she set up her telescope looking through the view finder she found herself positioned perfectly to spot the Bayer designation. Such a beautiful spot to view on this crisp November night. She shivered slightly.
Smiling she marked down on her star chart where she was looking. Her mind instantly began to rattle off different facts about the location. Orion she thought - the brightest star in Orion was Rigel. "Rigel - that'd be a pretty name" she smiled. "I do not like the other name for the constellation Orion though...bellatrix it just reminds me of infamous dark witch Bellatrix Lestrange...wait...that's quite silly, her cousin's name was Sirius and Sirius is noted as Orion's dog..." she smiled. "and the fifth closest star to ours" that made it one of the brightest stars they saw.

"I know what you mean," Tayla grinned. The telescope confused her, too, sometimes. She continued to gaze at the stars with her naked eyes. Tayla looked back at the star chart a few times.
"I hope we'll be able to spot it..." she mumbled to Sophie.
A few minutes later, Tayla took out a book from her bag and browsed quickly through it. "I should have checked this earlier. It might help..."
Finding what she was looking for, she closed the book and again looked up at the sky. "It says in my book that a double star called Albireo - not sure if I pronounced it right - is at the swan's head."
Tayla took her telescope and looked through it. "It appears to be a single star when viewed through the naked eye. But under the telescope, we'll see it as a double star - one yellow and one blue."
Tayla tried looking for Albireo, alternating between staring at the sky and using the telescope. With all the stars in the sky, she didn't know how she would find it, but she tried anyway.
"What do you like about stars, Sophie?" Tayla asked suddenly, still looking for the double star.
