The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again when he became a staff member at Hogwarts and now after his leave Professor Roslund maintains it - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items and supplies.
Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Roslund is a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues and his mentor with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.
Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Roslund. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.
In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Roslund, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.
During last year (term 29) the Observatory was destroyed by a house elf. Professor Roslund has restored it to it's previous state so there should be no dangerous stuff around. If you do find something peculiar then go straight to Professor Roslund and tell him about it, to not endanger your peers.

Kurumi joined in the conversation also convinced that they had found an undiscovered comet. "May I?" Professor Roslund asked as the lioness prefect moved away from her telescope. Crouching a bit he stuck his right eye to the lens and moved the scope around until he saw IT right there next to Altair just as Kurumi had stated. Excited he exclaimed "It is a comet, an actual Comet." Containing his excitement somewhat Professor Roslund said to the lions "This is big news. We.You need to take notes of the discovery noting the time and place etc. Then you need to give it a name and also go tell Headmaster Tate. He needs to be informed. It’s quite possible that this comet sighting has something to do with Hogwarts in only a few days will be 1000 years old." Or it could be just coincidence but Professor Roslund hoped not.
A large owl? Kurumi almost felt insulted. Her and August knew the difference between what what a comet looked like and what an owl looked like thank you very much. Yes, Professor Roslund earned himself an eyebrow raise from the prefect for that one. It had a tail...a tail that had formed due to the comet approaching the sun and ice that the object was made from had transformed directly from a solid to a vapor and released the dust particles embedded inside that the solar wind then had swept the evaporated material and dust back in a long tail. Owls couldn't do that. Nope. It was so not an owl.
However, all was forgiven and forgotten when the professor announced that they had in fact found a comet and Kurumi jumped up and down several times before throwing her arms around August to hug him. Team Goldberry for the win! Her eyes widened in some emotion of pride and fear when he suggested that they bring proper documentation to the Headmaster. "R-R-Really?" she stammered in surprise. "I actually have all that written down right here, Professor," she said as she handed him the parchment. Unless he was implying that they needed more specific information like degrees of latitude and longitude, to which she didn't have the proper instruments to measure that right now. Maybe August did?

Professor Roslund watched as Kurumi spontaneously hugged August feeling happy and bouncy. This was an amazing discovery which needed to be documented thoroughly. When Kurumi handed him some parchments he wanted surprised. She was always did everything to the tee. Skimming it over he mumbled "It looks good. You’ve added in the correct description of a comet and the time and date. Good, good." Handing the parchments back to Kurumi with a smile pursing his lips, "You need to show the headmaster to get the permission to take more measurements and to get the Goldberry comet recognized, maybe with an article in the Daily Prophet? I’ll of course help you two in any way you need." Edvard didn’t want this to be about him but about his students.
I guess this is to start wrapping things up and head to the Headmaster's?

Kurumi waited as Professor Roslund looked over their parchment, a small smile appearing when he said that they had included the proper information. Constant vigilance diligence! Kurumi accepted the paper back and then glanced at August. Who would have thought that one little homework assignment could have done all this?! Her jaw dropped when there was mention of an article in the Daily Prophet and she was SUPER relieved that her father no longer worked there. Knowing him, it would have turned into an ode several pages long. She shivered at the thought.
"Thank you, professor," Kurumi chirped with a small bow. "Is the Headmaster gives us permission, August and I will go to your office." Because, well, neither one of them knew what sort of measurements they really needed or how to go about doing them. She then turned to look at August. "Want to go see the Headmaster tomorrow?"

Since the mystery telescope challenge, Raven loved to visit the observatory to stargaze. She found the interest in Astronomy. Yeah, this lesson became interesting because of the challenge. She walked to the observatory from the dungeon. Merlin, that was very exhausted! After she reached the observatory, she took a rest for while, and now she's ready.
She prepared her telescope and checked her watch. Today was September 20. So many constellations that she could see today. She saw the constellations with her telescope, but she felt that her telescope was not focus.
"Lens Focalis." then she tried to find the constellation again. She moved her telescope to the north. A few minutes later, she found one of them.
"Cygnus." she said. Then she wrote about the stargazing today to her journal.

Christopher marched solemnly up the stair case to the Astronomy, not exactly happy.
Elektra was trailing behind him, and if she hadn't been, he probably would've made a run for it. He didn't know why she needed to know so many details he was unwilling to share! He and Violet and broken up, that was that. In fact, it was months ago that the actual breakup itself had happened! Perhaps if Elektra would've stayed, she could've found out herself.
Turning around slwoly after they'd walked towards the railing of the tower to face her and her green eyes, Christopher frowned. "Really, Elektra? Do we have to do this? Is it really necessary? I don't want to talk about his!" It wasn't a fun subject to relive, especially once he was starting to finally feel less terrible. But he also didn't want her to punch him in the face. So he figured this was going to happen whether he like it or not.
Pulling out his Astronomy notebook, the fifth year decided to kill two birds with one stone. If she was going to drag him up here, he was going to get some work done too. Setting up his telescope while she began talking, he began to search for constellations.

Laura had been looking around the castle and was shocked when she ended up in a room she had never seen before, this was a weird little room, she probably shouldn't have been in the room but once she saw the big telescope she couldn't help but go and see how big it was, she really wanted to know what it was used for, where was a Professor went she needed one, surely someone would know, it looked like it could see Pluto or something like that.
Hearing a voice behind him Professor Roslund turned to greet the newly sorted Slytherin "Evening, Hades." It was warming to see that they boy had found the Astronomy Tower almost immediately it couldn’t have been an easy track from the Slytherin dungeons to the 7th floor with his telescope.
Professor Roslund turned to August. "Are you sure it’s a real comet and not a satellite or a big owl?" Owls were known to be taken for something else entirely. August couldn't help starring at the Astronomy Professor with a small look of disbelief as he asked whether or not August and Kurumi knew what they had saw and if they hadn't mistaken it as an owl or something. Pffft. They knew what they had seen. It was still there for Merlin's sake.
Glad that the guy had decided to take a look before it had disappeared, his grin grew as he spoke, telling them they had, in fact, discovered a new comet. The hug was expected from Kurumi and the Gryffindor hugged her back, he was going to do the same thing if she hadn't done it herself. "Kurumi, this is insane!"
Professor Roslund continued to go on, mentioning a meeting with the Headmaster, this being possibly part of the school's 1000 year anniversary, and a possible Daily Prophet article. He would have never in a million years guessed this would happen when he had walked up the stairs to the Observatory. Kurumi was in charge now. She knew more about Astronomy than he did and he watched eagerly as the Prefect handed over the parchment with their records and such things on it.
"Thanks Professor Roslund. We will come see you right after we see what the Headmaster says on the matter." he was beaming with excitment at this point. He then turned to Kurumi as she asked him a question that had an obvious answer. "Of course I want to see the Headmaster, first thing in the morning, ok?"
He would not be getting any sleep tonight anyways.
Lugging his telescope around was hard work. Because it was heavy and such, and Darwin was quite a small boy - he wished he wasn't, but there was no escaping the fact that the eleven year old hadn't hit a growth spurt yet. And that annoyed him.
What didn't annoy him, however, was actually using his telescope. He hadn't done much except for at home, and then he hadn't had a very good view point. The Astronomy Tower had to be good though - the clue was in the title, and so Darwin enthusiastically took it to the top of the stairs and began to set it up at one of the openings. The sun had just set, and night hadn't properly fallen, but he could just make out the first few stars, and any stars were awesome.
Weren't they like big balls of fire? Like mini suns? And weren't some of them REALLY big, but he just couldn't see them because they were so far away?
That was all he remembered from Muggley school science, and he was pretty sure that Magicy Astronomy would be much more interesting. They'd actually learn stuff apart from the song that listed the planets, probably. Hopefully, at least, he thought to himself, as he began looking through his 'scope, now singing the annoyingly catchy tune under his breath.

Roman felt so confused being in a place that should be so familiar. His great-great-grandfather and great-grandfather, and their wives had once walked these walls. He heard he might have cousins within the school, but he wouldn't know them if they stood right in front of him. He was raised in France most of his life, until his mother got offered a position to the Ministry.
He was worried by the last name he bore. He didn't want to draw attention to himself, for he thought himself rather ordinary compared to legacy he came from. He just wanted to be Roman and nothing more.
While his mind was consumed his thoughts of his heredity, he found himself wandering the castle. And then he came to some stairs... they went up, up, up....
Finally he reached the top, where there were several star gazers. He felt rather foolish for not having a telescope of his own, but perhaps this was an opportunity to make friends and get a closer glimpse at the stars.
The first to catch his attention, was a boy that looked close to his age and was singing a peculiar tune. Hmm...kinda catchy, Roman thought as he raised an eyebrow. He shrugged his shoulders and stood behind the boy. "Um...whatcha lookin' at?"

Tayla went up to the observatory right after leaving Professor Roslund's office, keeping the note he had given her safely inside her robes. It was late afternoon, still too early for star-gazing, but she was already very excited. Tayla loved stars, and to have an assignment to watch them sounded very interesting to her.
"I hope I'll have someone up here with me," she thought suddenly. Star-gazing at night would, surely, make the place really dark. And she didn't like the idea of being alone in the dark and not being on her guard.

Sophie finally made up her mind and went to see what the Observatory looked like. She had never been in such high tower! Awesome! It felt like she was flying again!
Looking around, she saw a girl she had never seen before - not that she could remember, at least. Walking up to her, Sophie smiled and waved. "Hello there! I'm Sophie!"

"I saw Mercury, then Venus, saw the Earth, then Mars..." Darwin carried on singing, angling his telescope upwards a little more, struggling to make out anything in particular. It probably would have helped if he'd had the slightest inkling as to what stars were especially bright, or what planets you could see at this time.
But he didn't. That didn't mean that the boy didn't like looking through the telescope, though. All the pretty patterns that the stars made were really rather cool, and he wondered if you could manipulate them. He wanted to make stars spell out his name. Although which name he wanted them to spell he wasn't really sure.
Hearing a voice behind him, and quite close, Darwin stopped singing under his breath, not realising that someone had been so close. "Oh, uh, er I dunno." He shrugged slightly, looking at the boy who was about his age, before realising how stupid it sounded.
"I mean, the stars, but I don't know what stars are which and what planets are which and which are the thingymabobs, whatchamacallits." What was the word for patterns of stars again? "I mean, consternations." That was it, right?

Roman really had no idea what the boy was talking about. He then couldn't help, but chuckle a bit after calling the patterns consternations. "Um... I think you mean constellations?" Roman smiled. Surely the boy didn't mean being alarmed, though Roman had kinda snuck up on him. "I don't know that many, but there's a few my mum taught me."
Roman took a few steps back and gazed up at the stars. He knew there were loads more out there, that only a telescope could see, but there were some that his mum pointed out every night before going to bed. "Okay there!" he pointed. There were three bright start in a row, "That one is Orion's belt, he was a hunter in Greek mythology."
He then spun around and noticed another one. There were four stars that almost made a box with a tail near the top, "That one is Ursa Major!" He pointed. "It kinda looks like a saucepan if you ask me." Roman laughed.
Roman then stopped to look to see what the boy was doing or if he was even paying attention. He certainly didn't want to come across as a know-it-all, but that was only a few he knew and he only could name a handful more. He certainly couldn't tell you which ones were planets either. "You don't think we'll have to know ALL of them in astronomy do you?" He had a slight tone of worry in his voice. How could anyone remember all of them?

Nodding enthusiastically (which was pretty much his normal nod, as everything the boy did seemed to come off a pretty enthusiastic) Darwin bit down on his lip a little as the boy repeated him. "Yeah, those things." Waving an arm in the direction of the sky, he turned to look at the 'consternations' that he didn't know anything about. "Didn't I say that?" he added as he was corrected - Darwin accepted that he was in the wrong, though, and shrugged it off. He wasn't particularly bright, no matter what the Sorting Hat had said; he needed to try hard, and to try hard he needed to know stuff.
And he didn't really know stuff about Astronomy. Not yet, anyway.
Looking back at the boy and following his arm, Darwin studied the stars he was pointing out. "That's pretty cool," he managed, nodding again. "I know that that's the North Star," he said, pointing to a star near to the 'saucepan like' constellation. "And it tells you which direction's north." Oh, what an interesting fact; kudos to Darwin. Not.
"It kinda does," he agreed, admiring the saucepan-shape, and the information that the boy seemed to have. "I think I've heard of it before though... something to do with a bear. But it doesn't really look like a bear. So maybe I'm wrong." He added as an afterthought, his voice getting fainter as he spoke. Maybe they'd learn some more, in lessons.
At the tone of worry in the other boy's voice, Darwin began to anxiously rock on his feet. "I hope not. There's lots of them, isn't there? And like, millions and billions of stars. That would be hard." And his brain could not cope with that - he'd barely been able to remember his twelve times table, let alone millions of billions of stars and stuff.

Beezus pulled the Astronomy book where a parchment was slipped beneath its pages closer to her chest. It was Friday, which means it was the start of weekend tomorrow and it also meant that they'd be no class. Well..at least no proper discussions on weekends that is. She opened the door to the Observatory and headed over to a telescope, placing her things on a table next to it.
And because of the fact that it was Friday, she took the opportunity to do her star, no..planet gazing. Yep, because she came here to look for a certain planet. One that she had not tried doing before. Beezus looked at her watch and wrote a log on her parchment as she started her observation.
Based on her Astronomy book, the planet she was going to observe would be visible twenty minutes after the sun sets and twenty minutes before the sun rises as well. But..because their Transfiguration class had taken longer than expected plus she needed to eat dinner first, she did not make it on time after the sun set. Now, she needed to wait until before the sun rises. Oh well..she was hoping she wouldn't fell asleep.
With that thought in mind, the young eaglet headed over to where the telescope was and crouched over it, adjusting its objectives. It was gonna be a long night for her so she hoped that someone would come and probably talk to her while they wait for Venus to appear. Oh! yes, she was going to observe Venus for that was the highlight of the written assignment that Professor Roslund gave them. She just wanted see the beautiful planet with her own eyes. After all, it was named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty.
So, while she was waiting..she peeked at the telescope and busied herself with gazing at some constellations. Beezus stood up and walked over to look at the Constellation Chart pinned on one side of the wall. "Hmmm..let's see..which constellation should be visible right now?" she questioned as her fingers traced the figures of the constellations there. And then, a certain one caught her eye. Beezus crossed her arms, "Phoenix eh? -48.57 degrees declination?" She thought for a moment as she bit her lip. "Oh, that would be fine. I guess the telescope can still see this," she mumbled as she walked back to where her telescope was.
She bent over and peeked on it. It should have taken her about ten minutes before she had focused it on the said constellation. "So.. that one's Phoenix." Beezus lilted cheekily as she moved further away from the telescope's lens. Maybe she could even spend the night alone just by looking at that constellation after all. Truly, it was just majestic.

Minerva walked up to the Astronomy towers. She felt unsure of being up here since the last time she had come up she had points taken, but it seemed quiet enough this evening. She went to the cabinet and got out a telescope. These were so much better then the one she was using in her dorm room. Minerva walked over to an empty spot and set up the telescope. She laid her bag down and opened it pulling out her notebook and text book. Opening it up to see what she could look for tonight. Minerva shrugged she was going to do it differently tonight. She got up and looked through the telescope. She wanted to see what she could find on her own. As Minerva looked into the sky she noticed a star that she remembered her grandfather telling her about. She pulled her book closer and looked in. Yes it was the Sigma Octantis, so she looked further in her book and back to her telescope. She started writing in her journal as she looked in her telescope. Looking back at her book she smiled she had just found Octans. It kind of looked like a space ship in her books at home. She began to sketch what she saw.
SPOILER!!:
Quote:
Once she was finished drawing sketching down what she saw in the journal Minerva cleaned up everything and left the observatory before anyone else was around that might get her in trouble. She wasn't risking that again.
"Oh yeah that is the North Star, isn't it?" Roman had completely forgotten about that. "I hear that's what sailors would use back in the day to navigate at night." Roman kinda stared at it a little while longer. He didn't think himself much of a navigator. He'd probably just get it confused with another star and get lost.
"A bear really?" Roman raised an eyebrow. He tilted his head. "I don't really see it, but maybe we'll have to ask the astronomy professor about it." He certainly didn't know. He did think some of the stories behind them were rather fascinating. "Your guess is certainly as good as mine." Roman grinned.
He couldn't help, but notice the boy rocking on his feet. What was that about? Roman simply overlooked it. "My name's Roman by the way, but you can just call me R.J." He paused for a moment before extending his hand. He assumed that would be the polite thing to do.

Astronomy had to be the subject, Nessie struggled with the most but for some reason she still took it. She didn't get why it was so important to study all about the stars and planets, but in a weird sort of way it facinated her just a little. Either way, she had homework to do and she needed to get it done one way or another.
To her stargazing was exciting, although that was only if you did find galaxies or stars to look at in the first place. Seeing as she was a Hufflepuff, she was supposed to be a good finder, but when it came to looking in the skies her mind just went blank and she couldn't find much. When she looked at all the stars in the skyit was sort of like an optical illusion to her and it made her dizzy at times, but nonetheless she still enjoyed stargazing.
After having a small cup of coffee, Nessie walked to the observatory. It was a good thing she wasn't the only one there, because she knew she'd need assistance when it came to these things. She looked at the other girl, that looked younger and her and gave her a small grin. This girl somehow looked clever and Nessie instantly guessed that the girl was a Ravenclaw..because all eagles were clever right?
It looked like the girl knew what she was doing, and Nessie didn't want to start her gazing without making sure she had some assitance first. So biting her lip, Ness walked over to the younger girl. "Um..um..hey...would you mind helping me?" she asked a little nervous. This girl looked okay, but Ness had, had really bad experience with younger students and their reactions.
