Default Muggles Studies Lesson #2-Around the World in 80 Bites Part One

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

When you enter the classroom, you instantly notice flags from all over the world hanging from the rafters. These flags are from the following countries:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, USA, and the United Kingdom.

The flags have been charmed to slightly move in the wind occasionally but you can't feel a wind in the classroom.

Instead of desks, there are tall coffee tables with four tall barstools around each table. In the center of each table is a circular mirror with a tealight and multi-colored glass beads scattered around each tealight.

The room looks like a friendly little coffee house with flags hanging from the ceiling. The smell of coffee floats through the air and the atmosphere is calm and comfy.

In the corner of the classroom, is a muggle coffee vending machine that has been charmed to give you a coffee of your choice. You can choose from:
Plain Coffee, Caramel Macchiatto, Cinnamon Dolce Latte, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, Hot Chocolate, Chai Tea, or Vanilla Italian Soda. Just walk up and press a button and a cup of yummy goodness will fill up for you.

So come on in, grab a drink, and have a seat to take in the coffee house atmosphere! I hope you brought your appetite, though!

The professor can be found at a table at the front of the room sipping on a Caramel Macchiatto with extra caramel and reading a Muggle magazine about planning events.

OOC: Come on in, grab a coffee, and have a seat. You can talk but keep your conversation to a minimum. Class will begin this evening sometime!

Amelia had no idea what the second desert was, or what was in it, so she just hazarded a guess. "Alfajores would contain flour and honey? And umm... maybe cinnamon? Everything good has cinnamon in it. Ooh, and nuts!" Nuts were another thing good deserts had in them.

The third desert was a whole lot easier for her to come up with the answer for, because she had tried it before. "Nanaimo Bar is from Canada... I believe somewhere on Vancouver Island." And what was it composed of? Hmmm. "I believe it's made of wafer, butter icing, and chocolate. Or something like that.

When the final two desserts came around the table, Violet's sweet tooth made her even hungrier. She bit into the first dessert, which looked like a type of macaroon. "This tastes like..is there caramel in the filling part? It's very good though." while she finished the small pastry.

Violet went to the next plate. "Oh these are Nanaimo Bars! They're from Canada in British Columbia!" Violet went out to reach for one of the bars and bit into the sweet brownie like dessert. "It's really special because you don't need to bake it." She continued munching on the bar before continuing. "It's usually made with a wafer base with chocolate and vanilla custard on top, but people can put peanut butter, mint and other ingredients too to change it up. My favourite is the mocha flavoured one." Violet said happily. She always loved to talk about her Canadian culture foods, especially when you learn about them in class.

Alyssa liked the look of the next two desserts. She took a piece from the first plate and bit into it. She could taste a hint of the honey in it. So she raised her hand."Professor the Alfajores are made with honey, almonds, hazelnuts, sugar, flour, and breadcrumbs, and mixed with natural spices."

Then Alyssa took a piece of the Nanaimo bar. This looked like it had chocolate drizzled on it. Yum. She bit into it and then remembered where she had tasted this before. So she raised her again. "Professor, this dessert originates from Canada, mainly from the West Coast city of Nanaimo in British Columbia. It is a bar cookie which requires no baking and consists of a wafer crumb-based layer, topped by a layer of light vanilla or custard flavoured butter icing, which is covered in chocolate made from melted chocolate squares. There are many variations of it. Some people use different types of crumb, flavours of icing (e.g. mint, peanut butter), and types of chocolate. Two popular variations on the traditional Nanaimo bar involve mint flavoured icing or mocha flavoured icing."

Jotting down a few notes in her notebook, Kurumi poked her fork at the next to desserts. The one looked like a sort of sweet sandwich slash macaroon. Kurumi had had strawberry and cream sandwiches back in Japan, they were a sort of common thing come spring, but nothing like this and she hadn't come across them in her research from last term. She baked macaroons often, but none that had this sort of filling. Time to rely on her pallet to figure out what all was in it. So, Kurumi took a bite and let the flavors tickle her taste buds before raising her hand to answer. "I believe that these particular ones are using dulce de leche," she said, recognizing the flavor. "I think that this implies this particular recipe comes from Chile or Peru." But she wasn't entirely sure. "Dulce de leche means sweet milk. You make it from slowly heating sweetened milk until it takes on the flavor and consistency of caramelised sugar." Which was often times a little too sweet for the prefect's tastes.

And then Kurumi was poking the other one, with the name that started with an N. She had come across it once in her reading, but never lingered on it long. Still, she raised her hand again and offered up an answer. "I believe that that bar is referred to as Canada's Favourite Confection," she said, cocking her head to the side curiously.

Nate took a bite of the second dessert. He could definately taste caramel. He raised his hand and said "The second dessert looks like it is made of some sort of dough and filled with caramel. From the name it sounds like it came from Peru." Then Nate took a bite of the third dessert. It tasted like it was chocolate with something. Maybe nutmeg. He raised his hand and said "The third one tastes like it has chocolate. Maybe the white in the center is nutmeg. That also sounds like it came from Peru."

Furmgoat didn't expect to smell such smelly smells when he swooped into the classroom, his wonky wings carrying him above the heads of all the humans nomming away. The only other room he'd ventured into in this large building had big-eared creatures that gave him lots of treats. So, he expected lots of treats from here too.

Flying large circles around the boy person he was delivering to, searching for a safe spot to land, he hooted softly and finally settled on the edge of a table. His large owl eyes fixed on the boy person as he staaaaaaared, and held out his leg with the letter attached.

Jory had no idea what the first dessert was but he tried a bit anyway, as he listened to the students' responses. "It's not bad,'' Jory thought, really enjoying the pastry.

He raised his hand. "I think the second one is from Canada,'' Jory said poking at the Nanaimo bar with his fork. Just as he was about to put a bit into his mouth, an owl flew into the room, startling Jory a bit. It landed infront of a fellow Puff and stared around. Jory was tempted to give the Owl a bit of his pastry. "Would the Professor approve?'' he wondered to himself.

Oohh, macaroons. Ellie took a bite of the cookie type thing and smiled it was good. But not as good as her mum's macaroons. Maybe they weren't the same thing, but they were close. After she finished chewing, she raised her hand. "Aren't they made out of meringue? Like, all hardened and stuff?" Something like that. But it was good.

Ellie took a bite of the second one. And it was so good, she almost died. It was like a cookie and custard with chocolate on top. "Mm. This is good," she said to herself. She would have to get the recipe.

Nate then saw an owl swoop in. It started to circle around him. Nate got really nervous about that. Then it swooped down and perched on the edge of the table. He looked at it as it stared back at him. Next he noticed a note attached to his leg. Then Nate grabbed he letter and opened it.He looked over the note. He was happy to hear from his little brother. He then took off a little peice of the bar, and put it in front of the owl. He whispered to it "There's your treat." Then Nate put back the letter into the envelope, and put it in his pocket. he then took of a peice of tthe macaroon and put it next to the bar thing.

As the next desserts were being introduced, Lily took a little bite of each. The first one was kinda good and the second one, Lily really enjoyed because of the flavors. And I think that the second one has chocolate and maybe like some sort of creamy thing on top of like a cookie..."

Belle was stumped. She didn't know any of these deserts and what they were made out of. But she was trying them and they tasted delicious! "Professor i am sorry, i do not know what they are made out of but they are delicious!" Belle smiled while she had a little chocolate on her face.

Another desserts?! Yay! Messer eagerly grabbed his fork and when he was about to take a bite from the first of the two desserts, he heard Amelia said that it contained nuts. Eeeeeeppp! He can't eat nuts. He was allergic to it, so he put the fork down and moved on to the second desserts. He hoped this one was nuts free. He raised his hand up in the air. "I think the second one made from cookies, vanilla and umm..chocolate, Professor."

Ella tried the alfajores with a smile, thinking it looked a lot like a mini hamburger. She smiled as it was quite delicious and she wished she could have another, surprised she wasn't yet full from all the food she had tasted already. She wasn't sure what was in the alfajores exactly so she waited to hear the answers her classmates gave as she bit into the third dessert.

The nanaimo bar was pretty good. She tasted what appeared to be a chocolatey-vanilla concoction and it was definitely yummy. "Professor, this third one...Well I taste chocolate...and vanilla...and it seems to be like a cookie but only not..." She shrugged sheepishly, knowing this wasn't the best description. She then licked her fingers as she finished the treat, not wanting to miss any of the crumbs. Best class ever. She thought, smiling.

Tayla smiled as she saw another familiar Canadian dish. Knowing more about the Nanaimo bar than the other dessert presented, she decided to talk about that first. "The Nanaimo bar is a dessert from Canada," Tayla said after raising her hand. "It's a bar cookie and doesn't need to be baked. It's named after a city - Nanaimo in British Columbia. It can be made in different flavours, but traditionally, we have a wafer base, with vanilla or custard icing on top covered in chocolate."

After a pause, Tayla turned to the other dessert she was less familiar with and continued. "The name Alfajor reminds me of Arabia, Professor. They look really good, and are probably made of buscuits, chocolate, and flour...aside from other things I guess." She couldn't wait to try them!

Gemma smiled at all of the students as they answered, "As I mentioned the first of these desserts is from South America. It's called Alfajores...It's a type of macaroon...its made of caramel...my favorite and dough pastries to create the sandwich...some versions will add a creme or chocolate inside of them." she took her last bite and then went on to the second of the two.

She wiped her mouth and took a quick drink before continuing, "And the second is a Nanaimo Bar from Canada. It is made of a wafer crumb-based layer, topped by a layer of light vanilla or custard flavoured butter icing, which is covered in chocolate made from melted chocolate squares...and the best part is that it requires no cooking..." she said excitedly. She glanced at the clock on the wall and realized it was way past their time.

She flicked her wand and everything started flying out of the room...o she hoped everyone was done eating. "Well that's the end of our lesson...next time we are actually going to taste and cook four different dishes from the other side of the world..." she said standing up from her little table. "I hope to see you all soon! Thanks for coming and eating...I mean...learning..." she finished with a little giggle.

She flicked her wand and the Homework appeared on the screen above the students.

Oh, it was over. Aw man, Ellie wanted to eat more. Especially those Ninamoiasdskdjf whatever bars from Canada. Those were delicious. With a sigh, she hopped off her chair and grabbed her school bag. Ooh, and next lesson they were going to cook! Ellie loved cooking too.

Making a mental note to check the Ravenclaw homework board, Ellie scooted her way towards the door. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor," Ellie said with a bright smile as she passed her. And then she went her way out of the room with a full, happy tummy.

Alyssa was disappointed class was over. She had loved trying out all the dishes that the Professor had let them taste. But sadly class had to end. She sighed and yet another homework to complete. Didn't she just complete three? But complete this one, she would too. She packed up her things and on the way out the door thanked the Professor. "Thank you for another delicious and interesting class. See you next time." Alyssa smiled before running off to back to her common room to start working on the homework assignment.

Violet patted her very full stomach. She had fun trying different foods and learning about ones she had never heard of before. And of course, the professor assigned homework for them to complete. Researching about more foods wouldn't be so hard. Violet thought. She was excited for the next muggle studies lesson. Learning to cook the food was going to even more fun than trying out the food.

She got off her seat and headed for the door. Before exiting though, Violet called out "Thank you Professor! The lesson was absolutely delicious, I mean interesting and very informative about different foods. See you at the next lesson!" She quickly jotted down the homework on a piece of parchment and exited the classroom.
