Muggles Studies Lesson #2-Around the World in 80 Bites Part One
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
When you enter the classroom, you instantly notice flags from all over the world hanging from the rafters. These flags are from the following countries:
Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Egypt, El Salvador, Ethiopia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Korea, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Singapore, South Africa, Turkey, USA, and the United Kingdom.
The flags have been charmed to slightly move in the wind occasionally but you can't feel a wind in the classroom.
Instead of desks, there are tall coffee tables with four tall barstools around each table. In the center of each table is a circular mirror with a tealight and multi-colored glass beads scattered around each tealight.
SPOILER!!: Barstools
The room looks like a friendly little coffee house with flags hanging from the ceiling. The smell of coffee floats through the air and the atmosphere is calm and comfy.
In the corner of the classroom, is a muggle coffee vending machine that has been charmed to give you a coffee of your choice. You can choose from:
Plain Coffee, Caramel Macchiatto, Cinnamon Dolce Latte, Peppermint White Chocolate Mocha, Hot Chocolate, Chai Tea, or Vanilla Italian Soda. Just walk up and press a button and a cup of yummy goodness will fill up for you.
So come on in, grab a drink, and have a seat to take in the coffee house atmosphere! I hope you brought your appetite, though!
The professor can be found at a table at the front of the room sipping on a Caramel Macchiatto with extra caramel and reading a Muggle magazine about planning events.
OOC: Come on in, grab a coffee, and have a seat. You can talk but keep your conversation to a minimum. Class will begin this evening sometime!

Adam's eyes bugged out of his sockets. He felt a lump formulate in his throat as he looked at the dish. To him it resembled like brown brain guts with chunks of gooey white snow. Hesitantly he took his fork and took the smallest of a bite, swallowing the dish.
Hmm. It was kind of watery and thick at the same time.
"There's french fries.Win for french fries. And err... is that melted cheese, that one stuff hanging on top of everything else?" Adam asked pointing at the substance.

... Cheese? That white chunk tasted sort of cheesy. And there was some sort of gravy or sauce on it. It was kind of weird. But intriguing. And made Ellie took another bite. Hm.

He took a bite as it made it's way around and he found he was right--or at least he thought so. It tasted like cheese. It had to be cheese, right? He raised his hand, remembering that he'd heard about this dish even though he'd never heard of what was in it until now. "It's from Canada, right? That place with all the maple syrup?" he answered. He was surprised there wasn't any syrup in this!

Now the Professor had asked a question right? So he was going to try and answer the best he could. He raised his hand and said "I believe it's a Canadian dish Professor." He thought about it more, thinking about what flavors he tasted. "It tastes like there is potatoes and some kind of cheese in it."

The girl placed the napkin on her lap and picked up the fork. She took a bite of the dish and chewed on it slowly. Hm. It was good. She'd heard of poutine but she'd never had it before.
Evelyn raised her hand and asked curiously, "Professor, isn't this dish from Canada?"

The professor smiled as the students gave the dish a try and then answered her question. "Yes you are all correct..." she said excitedly. "Poutine is a fast food dish that originated in Quebec and can now be found across Canada. It is made of fried potatoes with fresh cheese curd or slices covered in gravy." she finished and then wiped her mouth a little bit with her napkin.
"Now onto our next dish..." she said with a flick. On the board above the bottom square on the left side lite up. "The next dish is a little bit spicy but I know you can all handle it." she paused after taking a drink of water...just the thought of spicy made her thirsty but she loved spicy.
"This dish is called feijoada..." she said the word with her best South American accent but she was sure it still sounded countryish..."Anyone care to guess what it is and where it's from..." she asked and then motioned for the students to give it a try.

Ella looked at the second dish, nervous to try it. She took a deep breath and put some into her mouth, pleasantly surprised at the taste. The Professor was right, it was spicy, but Ella found she actually liked it. Now where was it from? "Professor, it kind of tastes like the chilli my mom makes at home...It's kind of stew like and is the meat...is it pork? Maybe, well maybe it's from Brasil?" Ella's mom's family had traveled to Brasil before and maybe that's why the dish seemed familiar to her.
Nate then heard that the next meal is coming around. He looked at it. Sinced it sounded a little bit like spanish he raised his hand and said "It sounds like it came from Brazil or some type of spanish/portugese country. Also it looks like it's a stew wih beans pork and beef." Once again afer he said that he took a spoon and ate some of it. Whoa! That was hot! Then again the teacher did say this would be spicier then the last. So he can't blame her.

Across the table was a boy with dark hair, he looked quite cute and at one point she thought she saw his eyes flit towards her, so she ducked her head down and sipped on her hot chocolate, which she had got when she had arrived in the lesson.
She then looked up slowly and tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear.
Evelyn looked...annoyed to say the least. Even really angry actually. Was this about the fist-bump/shake hands thing? Probably not. Maybe she just didn't like this food-class. Or the professor. Or the girl who'd taken a seat at their table too. Even though she was a Hufflepuff.
Okay, there went that theory. They seemed to be getting along. Too well, actually. This was CLASS after all. They weren't supposed to chat. Though, he would probably never dare tell them to be quiet. Who was he to tell them after all. He wasn't a Prefect or anything.
Oh. But there was somebody telling them to be quiet and pay attention. The girl from the Healing Seminar. Amelia. He smiled at the older Hufflepuff before turning his back on the others again to be facing the professor. This Chai Tea was SO good, by the way. Where was he going to get that from after class?!

SPOILER!!: Feijoada
Lewis had simply REFUSED to eat the last food the professor had offered them. The one with all the mayonnaise or whatever it had been. The one from Quebec. No, it had just looked too...weird to try. This one looked a lot better though. Mhm.
Taking his spoon, the Hufflepuff carefully dipped it into the dish and then put it into his mouth. It was pretty good, yes. Maybe he would try making that some time. But for now he raised his hand to answer the next food-question. "Well, it could be either from Portugal or from Brazil, Professor, I think." He was pretty sure having seen two different recipes for this in one of his mother's cook-books.
Sean moved on to the next dish. It looked like chili, but didn't smell like it. Sean hoped it wasn't spicy, he didn't like anything spicy. He slowly took his spoon and tried a tiny bite. It wasn't great, but the pieces of sausage in it were pretty good.
South America huh? Only so many countries there. He swirled his spoon in the bowl to see what all was in it. He saw beans, sausage and spices. He raised his hand and answered, "Professor, is this from Brazil?" He knew the sausage was Portuguese but that wasn't in South America, but Brazil was very similar and in the right continent.

Amelia had tried some of the poutine and found it delicious, and now she was moving on to the second dish, and she studied it curiously. She had never seen it before. She raised her hand. "It sounds like it's Brazilian?" But she didn't really know much about Brazil and what they ate there. She took her spoon and poked at it a bit now. "It looks like some sort of stew. And it seems to consist of beans and... is that beef? Or maybe pork?" It was kinda hard to tell.
Um. Evelyn looked down at the next dish. Honestly, she didn't want to try it. Spicy. Evelyn didn't like spicy. However, the name sounded like it was Brazilian? Heh. She didn't know. The girl took a sip of the water and listened as the other students put forward their answers.
Completely forgetting for the moment that she was mad at the guy, Evelyn noticed Lewis taking a bite before she asked curiously, "Is it too spicy?" If it wasn't..well, maybe she would try it.

Lewis had taken another spoonful of the Feijoada, nomming quite contently at it. It was definitely a lot better than the last dish. Not that he'd tried it. But he was pretty sure it was better. Which reminded him, who cooked all these things anyway? The Professor?!
Glancing up from moving his spoon around in the dish to see what else was in there, Lewis needed a moment to swallow down the last bit of meat. "Uh. No. It's quite salty I think but not that spicy." He finally replied with an encouraging nod towards the dish sitting in front of Evelyn.

Gideon had watched as each table was presented with a plate filled with the various dishes they were to be trying. Ten separate areas for ten separate dishes that seemed to cover a wide variety of cultures at least by the look of things. Taste would be another factor but they hadn't tried anything yet.
Poutine...
Certainly interesting looking though semi-normal. And from Canada as was mentioned my multiple answers as well as the one who had first introduced it as a favorite. Taking a spoonful onto his plate, he passed it so that Selina and Auggie could try as well. He then took a bite of the dish, greeted with a pleasant taste. Mhmm nice. Looking to Professor Cerulean as she moved the class on to the next dish, his attention peaked as he heard the name.
Feijoada...wait that sounded Portugese.
Which was obviously out seeing as it wasn't in South America...obviously. Though he was leaning towards it being on the right track sounding vaguely familiar. He did share half a family in that part of Europe. Gideon tried to think of a country that shared Portugese cuisine but nothing was sticking out. Well it could be any number of South American countries that were settled by Portugal and there were already a few guess for Brazil. "Perhaps its from Bolivia...?" he supplied questioningly. It was the country closest to Brazil if he remembered correctly and possibly another option.
A path is not simply for walking, its purpose lies in moving forward and improving oneself.
Daichi took a sip from his vanilla drink when the next dish came up. It looked like beans and meat in a sauce and as he was taking a bite he immediately noticed that it was a bit on the spicy side. Not that that mattered to him since he had already said he liked Tteokbokki which gochujang sauce was REALLY spicy.
So as he took another bite from the food, he heard the professor asking them a question. He looked at the dish again before raising his hand. "...Fiji , Professor?" because it sounded like it came from there... Wait, was Fiji even in America? Eeeh he really should learn the places on the earth. But right now, his answer was Fiji. And he took another bite.
Evelyn looked amused when he gulped down the entire dish. He looked like he really enjoyed it. Salty? Evelyn looked doubtfully down at the Feijoada. Heh. She picked up her spoon and took a small...a really small bite and...alright. It was okay. It was a little too spicy but yeah. It was a good. "Thanks. I kinda like it." Evelyn whispered across the table. Yeah, she really didn't want to be told to shut up again.

Zhenya grabbed a spoon of the beany dish. She couldn't remember what it was called, it was an odd name. But WOW was it delicious. She loved spicy food and this was delicious. She had a think as to where it would come from... "Maybe it's from Mexico," she said, putting her hand up. Well, beans were in Mexican food.

"We are truly lucky to be able to meet so many people from so many different places..." she said smiling brightly as she took a seat once again at her tall table at the front of the room.
With a flick of her wrist, large rectangular white plates flew into the room and landed in front of each of the students. The plates were divided into ten different sections. Inside each section were a few bites of various dishes from around the world.
Once all of the plates had landed, Gemma continued, "Like I mentioned today is going to be part one of our trip around the world eating our way through different dishes..." she paused and took a quick drink and then continued. "Today we are going to focus on dishes from North and South America..." And with the mention of these two locations the flags from these areas flapped wildly in the imaginary wind above the students. After a few seconds they became motionless.
"On your plate are bites from ten different dishes in these locations. We'll go around to each dish and talk about each one..." she flicked her wand and glasses of water flew in and landed at the tables as well. "Now, I don't expect you to eat everything on your plate, but I would like you to try atleast a bite of the dish as we discuss it...." she took a sip of her water, "And along the way remember some of the basic manners we spoke about last time...this isn't a formal setting but simple manners and etiquette should be observed..."
With a flick of her wand, an image of their plates appeared on the board hanging from the ceiling and the top left hand square was highlighted.
"So, let's get started...." she said excitedly, "Our first dish is one that was mentioned by one of your fellow students." she motioned towards the young lady, "It is known as Poutine..."
SPOILER!!: Poutine
She grabbed her napkin and placed it across her lap. Then she grabbed her fork and took a little bit of the first sampling on the plate. "O everyone, please give it a try...don't be scared...all of these dishes are amazing!"
"Can anyone, other than the lady that mentioned it, tell me where this dish is from or what is in the dish or just anything about the dish?" she asked the students as she continued eating the last few bites of the dish.

Really? Kurumi sort of folded her arms for a moment and simply listened as she remembered the events from last term and especially the map that Professor Schirmer had charmed for them to show where everyone was from. Kurumi's personal highlight of the prefect event from last term. The professor was right though, it was nice know that there were so many people from around the world at Hogwarts.
When the first dish arrived, Kurumi recognized it instantly from all the research she had done. It was poutine, a fast food dish that originated in Quebec, Canada, and Kurumi hadn't really been particularly fond of it when she had tried it when testing various recipes for the buffet. Still, Kurumi used her fork and stabbed one of the curd covered fries and popped it into her mouth.
Yep...that was enough of that.

When the next dish appeared, Kurumi sort of sighed again. Spicy dishes and her just did not mix and this was one of those. Recognizing it once again, Kurumi raised her hand. "This dish, feijoada, is the national dish of Brazil and it a meal that is traditionally served on Saturdays and always at lunch time," she explained. "Some people also call it Brazilian Black Beans and it is also served in Portugal." But, since they were told that they were focusing on North and South America, that ruled Portugal out for the time being.

Sky thought for a minute. The name sounded like something from… "Is it Brazilian?" Yep definitely sounded South American. She took a bite, and immediately had to take a drink. Whew, spicy! Despite this, it didn't really taste that bad. She finished eating the amount on her plate and took another large drink of her water.

Alex looked at the feijoada and thought, "mmmm this looks tasty". It looked like a very hearty stew with lots of beans and sausage. The Professor said that it was spicy and Alex believed it. It smelled spicy, but that was fine with her. Alex loved food that had a little kick to it. She took a small bite and was pleased. It was hot and good! She raised her hand and said, "Feijoada sounds like a Portuguese word". "That means that it must be from Brazil.
Angelina tilted her head to the side a bit at the look ofT the Feijoada. She didn't like beans too much. Picking up a random silverwear she found have picked up a spon and dipped it in the Feijoada. Taking a deep breath she put the spon in her mouth and at it. With the affect of the beans Angelina didn't find it to great. As she planned before though she would take about one bit of everything so she wouldn't get to full, so no more Feijoada for her. Taking a sip of her coffee to get the tast down she raised her hand and said, "Professor this is a guess but is the Feijoada from Brazil or around there?"

Violet saw the plate going toward her..and oh my goodness! It was poutine! Her favourite dish from Canada! Violet took a good serving of it and ate a small mouthful of the delicious fries and gravy. "Yummy Professor. Haven't eaten this in forever!" Violet heard the student that had said the food looked like alien food and it hurt her a little bit, deep inside her heart, but she was sure that the student meant no harm. She looked down at the poutine and pushed it aside and lost part of her appetite.

SPOILER!!: Feijoada
Next came a very broth-y type of stew. What was that? It was called feijoada? Interesting. Violet didn't enjoy beans very much, but it was worth a try. She took a small spoonful of it in her mouth, chewed, and swallowed it with difficulty. Already her mouth was starting to burn from the steam coming off it and..oh my..the spiciness of the dish. She opened her mouth and flapped her hands to cool herself off. She remained silent when the teacher asked where it was from. She had absolutely no idea and that would be the first experience she's had this food.

Gemma smiled at each of the students as they walked. About halfway through all the students entering she put down her magazine and smiled at the students as she sipped on her Caramel Macchiatto.....oooo how she loved these things...She wiped her mouth and tip of the nose just in case some whipped cream had snuck up there and then she stood up.
"Hello everyone!!! I am so excited to see all of you!" she said excitedly. "And welcome to the second lesson of Muggle Studies for the year." she paused waiting for the conversations to end after her introduction.
She motioned up towards the flags hanging from the rafters and they all swung in unison..."Welcome to Around the World in 80 bites...an adventure around Muggle Cuisine around the world...." she said bringing her arms back down and smiling excitedly as her stomach growled, "This lesson will be divided into parts, so today we will just go around the world in 40 bites..." she said with a little giggle...yes it was a lame joke but it was a joke none the less. "I hope you brought your appetite and an open mind to try each of these dishes...."
She flicked her wand and a board dropped down from the ceiling in front of her little table. "So, let's get thing started by learning from each of you..." she said flicking her wand towards the board. Slowly the words Fellow Students wrote across the board in the Professor's handwriting.
"Please raise your hand and tell me where you are from and share a favorite dish from your area...let's try to keep them muggle dishes if we can since this is Muggle Studies...and don't repeat something someone else has already said..." she said with a nod up and down, "For instance, I'm from the United States," as she said the US, the flag wiggled hurriedly from the rafters, "And one of my favorite muggle dishes is Hot Dogs with cheese and chili..." as she said this her name, hot dog with chili and cheese and the United States was scribbled across the board.
OOC: All conversations should end now...remember not to announce yourself coming in late from this point....also don't forget to raise your hand before your answer....and no repeating other people's answers...and as always, Gemma, is watching!
Tayla raised her hand. "I'm English-Canadian, Professor, but I spent most of my life in Canada. One of my favourites is roast beef with yorkshire pudding." Just the thought of it made her hungry and miss home.

OOC: Please do try the dish...you can share with others what you think of it, but keep it to a minimum please...don't forget to raise your hand when you answer...we are going to move fast today...probably going to be posting each dish every two hours or so....
O and remember Gemma sees you..yes you!
Having grown up in Canada, Tayla had a huge grin on her face seeing the poutine. She raised her hand and answered. "That's a Canadian dish and originated from Quebec. It can be served with lobster meat, at least that's what my father does on special occasions." She ate a little after reciting. They were delicious!

Elise tried a bit of it, and shrugged. She had no idea where it came from... Oh, wait! It was from CANADA! But loads of people said that already, so she was just quiet.

Taking a bite, Elis beamed. SPICY! Siping a bit of water, she raised her hand. "Is it Portugal, Professor?" she asked. "Or maybe Brazil...." she added as an afterthought.
More food!!! Oh merlin, she was loving this lesson, but honestly... Why did Muffled studies always focus on food? Not that Selina cared, it was food. As she tasted the next dish... Devoured... Whatever, she rose her hand and said, "Takes like south African food... Maybe portugese?"
When the first dish arrived, Messer's eyes went towards his plate. Wasn't it a Poutine? To confirmed it, he took a spoonful of it and popped it into his mouth. Yup it definitely a poutine. It came from Canada? He never know that but now he knows. That was interesting first dish, he can't wait to see the next one.
Then the second dish come. Spicy dish? He didn't really like spicy dish but as long as it not too spicy. Once again his eyes went directly to the second dish. It look....interesting. And the Professor said it called Feijoada? "Umm..Is it come from Portuguese, Professor?" Because it sounds like one or its Spain? or maybe Brazil? "And it consists some beans and beef." Messer could see some beans and beefs in there but he not so sure whether its beef or pork.

The professor smiled at the student's guesses and with a little nod left and right she said, "O you are sooo close...their cuisines and dishes are very similar to this country..." she said encouragingly.

Glancing up from moving his spoon around in the dish to see what else was in there, Lewis needed a moment to swallow down the last bit of meat. "Uh. No. It's quite salty I think but not that spicy." He finally replied with an encouraging nod towards the dish sitting in front of Evelyn.

Violet's mouth watered at the sight of the third dish the professor gave them. The aroma of the steak wafted to her nose and she breathed deeply at the herbs that came with the steam. Taking her knife and a fork, she sliced a piece of the meat and placed it in her mouth. The juice flowed with deliciousness. "Yum, professor. This is absolutely delicious! I am guessing that this dish is from Portugal? Does the word Churrasco mean beef or grilled meat in that language?" Violet answered the teacher as she ate another slice of the delicious meat.
