What?! Did he… just insult her? He really thought she was just that stupid that she couldn't figure out what a chamber was? Grr…

"Salazar Slytherin created the Chamber of Secrets to hide a basilisk which wanted use to rid Hogwarts of all the muggleborns that were attending." See, not stupid. She barely managed to not stick her tongue out at the professor. Really.

"Well that certain is what a chamber is. So...since the Chamber of Secrets is a chamber you are correct." Gold stars for you.

Oh, amazing. The Hufflepuff finally decided that she attended school to learn and listening to professors. Amazing. He simply ignored her answer though. It was not simple at all.

"Right! Under the Lake. Good job for pointing that out" Because everything in Hogwarts was connected..

"You make it sound like a maze. But I figure it is a bit like that so yes, you are correct."

"Aqueduct. Tunnel. Two different things. Aqueducts are known as water bridges for a reason." The Chamber was called a chamber and not bridge of water for a reason.

"The main chamber, right." He nodded. "Everything else...the tunnels...nothing really." The creator had built his own mini labyrinth when it came to the tunnels.

He sighed. "Your answer does not tell me what the chamber is which is what I asked for. I didn't ask for anything else."

"Amazing how you figured that out." He wasn't being sarcastic...maybe a bit. But the girl seemed bitter anyways so might as well.

"Best answers I've gotten so far." Scabior would give kudos to both students.

Was this one enjoying himself on the ground now? Scabior just gave the boy a thumbs up.

"Well its around a bunch of tunnels" Scabior shrugged. "You're still right."

"Amazing. No clue how you could come up with that.

"Right! Good job." He nodded.

Scabior made a face. "Kind of....like...if you were to say that cheese is kind of like yogurt." So really...no. Not like a cave.

He blinked. "A hole....is a hole...the chamber is more like a room."

Taking back what he said...Scabior just stared.

"It's not a Hallway, it's a Chamber." Scabior smirked. See why he has to ask such simple questions?

"Thank your allergies for interrupting you, because anything else you had to add was wrong." And why would it be wrong? Because Scabior had not asked for it.

"Genuis. Really." His voice was dry.

"Many people know about it. It's written in books."

"I. Specifically. Said. Do. Not. Tell. Me. Who. Created. The. Chamber." Scabior spoke slowly, making sure that every word was clear. What was it with students that made it impossible for them to listen?

Tomb? Scabior snorted. The irony of it. "Sure."

Holding class in a washroom did not help his laziness, especially when he didn't have a desk to lean against. Scabior sighed but luckily for the students that didn't affect his mood too much.

"So, as many if not all of you said, a chamber is underneath the school, it's a big room that has a bunch of tunnels around it. This specific chamber holds secrets." Scary. And basic, which he didn't mind at all. "Does anyone know who created the chamber, and why? And if you don't know-" He looked around down at the students. "-what do you think was the purpose in surrounding the chamber with tunnels and dead ends?"

Right. Now people could tell him who created it.

Taylor smiled at the professor's reply and her bad mood lifted some but not all. When the professor asked the next question, she raised her hand. "Sir, Salazar Slytherin made the Chamber of secrets and it was made to house the Basilisk that he was going to use to get rid of all the mu--" Taylor was about to say mudbloods since she was used to hearing her grandma use that term, "all the muggleborns attending the school."

natethegreat 02-22-2012 02:26 AM

Nate raised his hand and said "Salazar slytherin created the chamber professor. It was specifically created for the purpose of purging the school of all Muggle-born students. The chamber held a basilisk in it which could only be controoled by the "true heir" to rid the school of all muggle-borns." Nate was pretty confident with his answer on this one.

midnight_thestral 02-22-2012 02:54 AM

Violet raised her hand at the professor's question, "Er..Professor. Isn't it the man named Salazar Slytherin who made this Chamber of Secrets?" She scratched her head at the professor's next question. Why? She wasn't sure, but rather participate and take a guess at it. "Did the founder of the Slytherin house wanted only purebloods to be in Hogwarts so he had this big snake living inside the chambers right and hunt the rest of the wizards and witches down? Is the snake name called a...basilisk?" Violet knew she shouldn't be speaking so informally with the professor, but it erked her that she didn't know how to properly phrase her response to him.

pundantic 02-22-2012 05:22 AM

Selina tried not to show her shame when her Professor repermanded her for saying the name of the person who had constructed the Chamber of Secrets. She supposed that she did not hear his exact instructions when he asked about the Chamber, but honestly, unless a person did not grow up in the Wizarding World everyone knew the story of the Chamber of Secrets. It was a great tale that parents told their young witches and wizards.

Now that he had given them the go ahead to answer the question Selina rose her hand timidly, "Sir, it was created by Salazar Slytherin because he wanted to preserve his ideals of the type of students who attended Hogwarts. He created the Chamber to hold his basilisk, which would rid the school of all muggle born students. This would ensure that only the type of students he deemed worthy of hogwarts would stay in the school."

FearlessLeader19 02-22-2012 05:46 AM

Jory raised his hand. "The Chamber was created by Salazar Slytherin to hide his Basilisk which he used to rid the school of...Muggle born students,'' he said.

The third year felt sorry for those Muggle borns that had been affected by the giant snake and being a Muggle born himself he was sort of glad it wasn't around still.

Thumbs up. Ok good sign that the Ravenclaw's train of thought was headed the right direction. Bit of consolation from the feeling of his bum growing numb from the cold hard floor.

And now he focuses on the next question. He raised his hand again as he replied "The chamber was said to have been built by Salazar Slytherin, and its primary purpose was to house the Basilisk, which he brought into the castle to purify it of Muggleborns." A plan that nearly succeeded he might add.

He paused for a moment, considering the second question. The Ravenclaw offered this guess "Professor, perhaps the mazes serves several uses-- one is that it can be added security in keeping outsiders from just walking straight into the chamber itself." Its all part of it being secret you know? "Second, it can be used as a means of the Basilisk to get around various parts of the castle. Thirdly, it probably also serves as a kind of amusement for the Basilisk, on the times that it wants to catch-- or even play-- with its prey.

Jez stared steadily at the professor as he basically shot the sarcasm back at her. She just loved Scabior - always worth the effort of turning up to what was possibly the most boring subject on the curriculum, just to hear his attitude. She shot a wink at the Slytherin fourth-year who'd also answered to the 'chamber with secret' effect.

Okay, back to the class. Jez's hand was up again. "Salazar Slytherin built the chamber to house his dirty great pet snake, since they don't do big enough dog houses in Diagon Alley. And because he wanted to use it to get all the Muggleborns out of Hogwarts." And that plan worked - not. Seriously, old Slytherin didn't really think that plan through thoroughly, did he?

Harvey didnt know who had created the chamber so he decided to attempted the answer the next question. He put up his hand "Professor I think that surrounding the chamber with tunnels and dead ends was a way to confuse anyone who entered so that they would get lost like you would get lost in a maze." he answered as best as he could even if it was wrong.. at least he attempted it.

Tayla wrote down notes as the professor discussed and her classmates answered.

SPOILER!!: Tayla's History of Magic Notes

Second Floor, Girl's Lavatory (Moaning Myrtle)
- Enterance to the Chamber of Secrets
- Where a girl named Myrtle died
- Last place were Gilderoy Lockhart was seen sane
- Polyjuice potion made by Harry Potter and friends

Chamber of Secrets
- underneath the school, it's a big room that has a bunch of tunnels around it
- holds secrets
- created by Salazar Slytherin and home to a Basilisk, which was intended to be used to rid Hogwarts of Muggle-born students

She decided to answer the professor's question this time and raised her hand. "It was created by Salazar Slytherin and made it the home of a Basilisk, which was intended to be used to rid Hogwarts of Muggle-borns." After a quick pause, she continued. "I think the tunnels and dead-ends were for the Basilisk to move around and to be able to trap its...prey." Tayla shuddered a little. The idea was horrible.

Poolicious 02-22-2012 02:26 PM

Messer raised his hand after Professor Scabior had given them a green light to answer the next question "It was created by Salazar Slytherin." The founder of the Slytherin house. "I think he created it as a home to Basilisk which intended to be used to get rid of the muggleborns." He said lowering his hand.

RachieRu 02-22-2012 02:46 PM

Who created the tunnel? Hmm. Or Chamber. It that man wasn't it? That man that was the Slytherin's house founder. Hmm. Indiana raised her hand, before she spoke. "I think it was created by Slytherin." Wait. That made it sounded like she thought the Slytherins had created it! "The man...not the house." Because that was right. Although it would make more sense if a whole house made it. More people made work easier? Something like that. "And...maybe there were lots of tunnels and stuff, so that people would get lost easily." Which wasn't very nice. "It would also confuse people to where they were, and where they had come from." Which also wasn't that nice.

cheeseStrings 02-22-2012 03:08 PM

"Salazar Slytherin created the Chamber," Janice said after raising her hand. "I think the reason why he put a lot of tunnels and dead ends is because he's scared that anybody would find the Chamber and died because of his basilisk, which somebody actually did, and that includes his loved ones if he had any."

Well since the name was the Chamber of Secrets and because Auggie was pretty sure a man who's last name was Secrets didn't build it, he had to actually think back to his readings to remember who exactly had had the Chamber of Secrets commissioned.

He remembered that it was during the time of the four Hogwarts founders so that was a big help. Oh he remembered now so the Gryffindor raised his hand quickly. "Professor, Salazar Slytherin made this chamber after the remaining three founders refused to accept just pureblood students like he had wanted. He built the place to hide a beast, the basilisk, that would later purge the school of the...muggleborns." He had read some very condesending words about Muggleborns he wasn't going to repeat. At least Slytherin wasn't successful.

Mad Eye Touz 02-22-2012 09:22 PM

And Vickers and Jezabel, too! hehe

Aspen found herself nodding along with two of her fellow 'Claws. Yes, yes, they had the right of it, in her opinion. She didn't expect either of them to actually notice her, but she DID smile at them both approvingly.

Then she raised her hand.

"I think it unfair to assume, just because history was written that way, that Salazar built the Chamber simply to purge muggleborns. Who's to say that originally, he wasn't just practicing responsible pet care? We can't fault someone for liking exotic pets and clearly with an XXXXX rated creature, he'd need to take certain precautions to ensure the safety of others. The Chamber not only would keep others from the basilisk, but it would keep the basilisk from spiders and roosters."

See? Perfectly logical sense. Why did everyone always assume the worst about everyone? Because a book told them to? Ahem. "I do believe he did lacked foresight, but he seemed to be a great caregiver to his pet. Mr. Slytherin built a giant, secret playground for his snake." That was Slytherin for you though, always thinking in the HERE and NOW and not to the could be....

- Enterance to the Chamber of Secrets
- Where a girl named Myrtle died
- Last place were Gilderoy Lockhart was seen sane
- Polyjuice potion made by Harry Potter and friends

"As you can see-" He jabbed his thumb at the list. "-There are loads of reasons as to why, this specific lavatory is important to Hogwarts history. All of which, relate back to the Chamber of Secrets. To make things simple, can you guys explain what the chamber is? Not what is inside it, or who made it, or any of that but actually what the Chamber of Secrets is. Explain in the most basic form." The question he was asking could be answered by a five year old, and he would know. He asked one before.

Vlimia jotted down the answers in her notebook, and looked up at the proffesor as he spoke. Raising her hand politely, she waited for her turn. "The Chamber of Secrets is a huge temple-like room with pillars and carved serpents. There is a massive statue of Salazar Slytherin at the far end from which the basilisk comes when summoned. The entrance and the first part of the Chamber is located under and in this very bathroom, but the rest - the main part - was built under the Black Lake." Vlim said, forcing herself not to go into too much detail about Parseltongue and the Basilisk. She didn't even say that the basilisk was no longer alive to be summoned, thanks to the great Harry Potter.

The next question came, and Vlimia raised her hand once again. "Salazar Slytherin built it, to house a monster - the basilisk - which would finish his 'noble work'. This noble work would be accomplished when his true heir would open the Chamber and release the monster which lived within to rid the school of non-pureblood students." Simply speaking about it sent a small shiver down her spine. "I think there are so many dead ends because the Chamber was built a long time ago, so modern plumbing systems would have caved in some passages and tunnels. Or maybe Salazar Slytherin wanted it to be misleading for anyone who wasn't supposed to be there." She thought aloud, feeling slightly odd speaking about it so close to the actual location. Vlim would have delved deeper and explained that a basilisk can be created when a toad in settled upon a chicken's egg, but this wasn't Care of Magical Creatures, was it?

Jessiqua 02-22-2012 11:34 PM

Zhenya had a quick think about the question. She didn't really know why he created it but she wanted to take a guess at why it was built and structured the way it was. She raised her hand and said, "Professor I think... that when he made it he put all the tunnels and dead ends in it so that whatever it contained couldn't get out. And... maybe whoever was unfortunate enough to find out how to get there, he wanted to make sure they didn't get back out and reveal the secret," she said.

Well, if there is a way in there is usually a way out, she knew that, but she thought it could be difficult to find the way out if the chamber itself was so big. She doubted there was an exit sign.

Though Vashti knew who had created the Chamber of Secrets and why, she decided to answer the second question instead of the first since so many others had already answered it - and she also didn't really want to get into all the "purging the school of Muggle-borns" stuff. So, second question. Raising her hand, she said, "Maybe the reason it's surrounded by so many tunnels was to keep the basilisk from escaping the chamber before the proper person - Slytherin's heir - came to control it to fulfill what Salazar Slytherin originally intended. Otherwise, if the basilisk could just get out of the chamber and wander around the school on its own, anyone might accidentally be killed by it, regardless of whether they were Pureblood, Muggle-born, or anything in-between."

Erindipity 02-23-2012 05:41 AM

Mortimer was SUPER stoked that Scabior said BEST ANSWER SO FAR. YEAAAAAH BUUUUUDDY! Ahem. Yeah. So raising his hand he said in response, "Salazaar Slytherin created the chamber and the tunnels so that the basilisk he housed there could move through the school undetected and do his bidding." TRUTH.

More questions about the chamber. And the simpler it would be said, the better. Beezus gathered her hair and pulled it to her right shoulder, then she raised her hand. "The creator of the chamber was Salazar Slytherin." They all knew who he was of course? And what his role was in the founding of the school, right? "It was believed that he built it so he could house one of his pets..." O__o "Err--magical creatures there which was the Basilisk and to keep some other unidentified secrets." Beatrice said.

Head lowered, Hades tried to hide his smirk-turned-grin in response to Scabior's dry reaction to his answer. He looked up again when the professor asked another question and listened to what the others had to reply. Hmm... "Salazar Slytherin," answered the fourth year calmly with his hand raised lazily. Since almost all of them said it was Slytherin, then it must be him.

Hey Ju 02-23-2012 11:48 AM

Oh! Finally a question Sophie knew! At least one of them. She raised her hand. "I know Salazar Slytherin built it." But she didn't know what for... "Um... he built it to... well, he did sound like a mysterious person, so he probably had a lot of things to hide from the others." Chamber of Secrets... to hide... his secrets! Dead ends and tunnels and everything to make things complicated. There! Nothing could be simpler!

weasleytwinsROCK 02-23-2012 07:45 PM

Daisy sucked her quill for a second or two, thinking about the question as she finished her sentence. She had read this somewhere, or heard it from a story one of her parents had once told her. Looking around the class, she spotted a Slytherin boy, and it came back to her.
'Salazar Slytherin, founder of Slytherin created it,' she said dropping her quill, 'and wasn't it to keep his secret monster in, and make the other three founders jealous of his secret room?'

Annabelle was relieved she got the answer correct. "Well Professor i know the chamber was created by Salazar Slytherin, the founder of slytherin house. He created it because he didn't want the other houses to know about his secrets. He surrounded it with tunnels to trick the other students. He wanted them to be cunning and use their smarts to find their way through." That was all Belle could muster because she was only a hufflepuff after all. She knew of all this from her brother's friend who was a slytherin.

Salazar Slytherin. Not the best man in History. "Good guess Mr. Gert, its not exactly correct but If someone did manage to find the opening to the tunnels it would still be extremely difficult for them to find the actual chamber."

She raised her hand now. "The chamber was created by Salazar Slytherin. He didn't really approve of the other founders accepting Muggleborns into the school, so he made it to house a Basilisk. The Basilisk was to rid the school of Muggleborns."

'Salazar Slytherin, founder of Slytherin created it,' she said dropping her quill, 'and wasn't it to keep his secret monster in, and make the other three founders jealous of his secret room?'

"It was believed that he built it so he could house one of his pets..." O__o "Err--magical creatures there which was the Basilisk and to keep some other unidentified secrets." Beatrice said.

"Slytherin yup." He nodded at those who were correct. "And yes, he did create it so that he could place his creature- A Basilisk inside to try to rid Hogwarts of Muggleborns." Salazar Slytherin was an intense man.

He didn't like having class in the lavatory. But moments later he changed his mind. He knew the answers to what Scabior had just asked. His hand rose into the air and he began talking.
"The Chamber was created after Salazar Slytherin got in a dispute with Godric Gryffindor. He didn't approve of having muggleborns get an education at Hogwarts. He wanted only those of pure blood to be taught, for he thought they were the ones truly deserving of magical education. The chamber was created to house the Basilisk, with the intent that his heir would utilize the chamber and the beast within to purge Hogwarts of all those deemed unworthy of magical education." He purposely didn't answer the last question, because he knew whatever he'd say would just end up in humiliation. He lowered his hand and resumed looking at the ground.

"Right, you mentioned something that we'll actually talk about in a second." Scabior nodded.

"The almighty...i mean Great... i mean Salazar Slytherin made the chamber of secrets, sir" He said as his eyes started to twinkle and his upper body swayed a bit back and forth in excitement.

He had read about it in the school book before and he was fascinated that his house founder had such a secret room under the castle and not many had found it in history. "I think he made the dead ends and tunnels to mislead anyone who would enter. I think most people would give up after some time and...there was something about a monster but" he bit his lip as he tried to recall what he had read but nothing came up, unless his mind went towards the duck pond like it did now . Wait. That made it sounded like she thought the Slytherins had created it! "The man...not the house." Because that was right. Although it would make more sense if a whole house made it. He nodded. "Nice guesses." He was being so kind today. "The issue of it being hard to actually get through the tunnels to find the real chamber was probably why dead ends were created, and a small reason to why the tunnels were created. Just in case someone was actually able to get down there."

Why all the tunnels and and everything. Kurumi wasn't too sure that she was convinced that the reason for all the tunnels and stuff were to make it difficult to find the actual chamber. Slowly, she raised her hand. "I think there must have been more of a reason for all the tunnels and dead ends than just to make the chamber hard to find. Once you found the entrance, you have to be able to speak Parseltongue to get in and that is a very rare gift." She paused for just a moment. Of course, to keep those who COULD speak the language of snakes from getting in could be part of it. "Since the Chamber of Secrets was home to a basilisk, perhaps Salazar Slytherin built these as a means for the basilisk to get around and could use the dead ends as something to slither up to reach the pipes in the ceiling." The basilisk had been recorded in history as using pipes to get around.

"You lot-"Scabior pointed at the ones who answered."Basically hit the nail on the head. Making it hard for people to find the chamber was only a small factor. Actually creating a way for the Basilisk to get around without being noticed was the big issue, and Slytherin was able to do with with the tunnels and plumbings."

He raised a brow. "Snakes shed their skin. That snake was probably cleaner than you are right now, sitting on the floor." He smirked.

Scabior blinked. Now he was certain. Ravenclaws were going to be the death of him. Probably starting with this one. "That could have been a possibility Miss Odessa, but you have to think about the fact that if Slytherin really loved his creature so much, why would he just leave it?" Yeah kid, the history books were probably right....the had sources and stuff.

"Nice note about the plumping. Some passages and tunnels may very well have changed over time, changing the layout that Slytherin had initially." So maybe at first there were no dead ends at all?

And... maybe whoever was unfortunate enough to find out how to get there, he wanted to make sure they didn't get back out and reveal the secret," she said.

Well, if there is a way in there is usually a way out, she knew that, but she thought it could be difficult to find the way out if the chamber itself was so big. She doubted there was an exit sign.

He shook his head. "It's the opposite actually." Think about that.

Woah. A lot of information given in a small amount of time. "Well....i'm certain that that's not exactly why, but....at least you are thinking. Makes sense too." Good job thinking? They could have even been true.

"Um... he built it to... well, he did sound like a mysterious person, so he probably had a lot of things to hide from the others." Chamber of Secrets... to hide... his secrets! Dead ends and tunnels and everything to make things complicated. There! Nothing could be simpler!

Scabior snorted. "Yes. Slytherin had many things to hide from the other founders." He answered simply. Cute answer kid.

-------

He waved his wand, erasing the list that had been beside him initially and replaced it with a new one.

-Created by Salazar Slytherin
-Wanted to rid the school of Muggleborns
-Tunnels and dead ends used for means of his beast travelling and for some sort of maze
-The beast was a Basilisk.
-You look into the eyes of a Basilisk you die.

"So like some of you said, the Chamber of Secrets was created by Salazar Slytherin." No big secret there he assumed. "Salazar did not like the fact that Muggleborns would be allowed in the school. The other founders disagreed with that. After many fights he decided to leave the school, but not before creating the chamber." Scabior was rushing slighting, most of them knew this right?

"He created the chamber to hold the Basilisk- a creature that can kill you if you look it in the eyes- which Slytherin intended to use to rid the castle of any Muggleborns. Slytherin wasn't planning on doing this himself though. Why? You're guess is as good as mine." He paused. "My guess is simply that true Slytherins get other people to do their work for them.? There was nothing wrong with that "Anyways, Slytherin left the Basilisk in the Chamber of Secrets and said that his rightful heir would arrive and take care of the Muggleborns."

"The other founders searched for years and they were not able to find the Chamber. And then no one thought anything of it until the heir arrived and the chamber was opened in 1942." He looked around the class. "Any one care to tell me who the heir was? And maybe even some of the events that happened once the Chamber was opened the first time?"
