"I've done a bit of rough work in my notebook,"
she smiled. "But it feels like there's something or two that's not there..." On a blank page, Elise'd written in Turquoise color pencil a topic and scribbled a few notes under it.

SPOILER!!: Notebook
What does the word PYGMY mean?
In Greek mythology, is related to a race of dwarfs.
Pygmy people are a race of people having an average height less than 5 feet.
Also means unimportant, but unrelated to topic.

She shrugged. "I guess so," she said, referring to the comment about It being a good name for a Pygmy Puff. She honestly had just named it that, because she could care less about giving the tiny creature a name.

Sierra peered over at the girl's parchment. "Well, some of that really doesn't relate to a Pygmy Puff, especially the whole 'less than five feet' part'. I think it's more like...less than six inches," she said with a smirk. "At least it's something to go on. Maybe we can chalk it up to be a tiny puff with a size similar to a dwarf." Or...something.

She looked back at the list of questions they needed to answer:

STUFF WE WANT TO KNOW
  • exception to the Ban on Experimental Breeding???
  • eat what???
  • why are they so adorable???
  • can be trained to NOT eat snot???
  • what does pygmy mean???
  • how does one discover a puff's gender???
  • what magical properties do they possess??

"What do they eat?" she wondered out loud. "Maybe tiny pieces of lettuce or other plants..." She scribbled that into her notes. "Ewww...eat snot? Sickening little creatures..." She moved on quickly, not even wanting to think about that. "I don't think they have magical properties. Maybe they're just a magical creature than can only exist in a magical world. Maybe they don't...actually...do anything." You know, other than sit on shoulders and eat snot.

Minerva looked at her parchment. She wrote down no magic next to the Puffskeins.

1. Finding similarities between it and other animals.
2. Asking it....

Alyssa couldn't help but giggle when she heard that Taylor had tried to feed it hair. "Well thank goodness, it doesn't like hair. "Sounds like a plan," he said glancing over at the pen when it was mentioned. A larger group would allow for better results indeed.

Seeing the younger boy handle his pygmy puff, the 5th year tentatively raised Doyle up to his shoulder to see if he would take the perch as well. It certainly moved from his hand after a while, seeming to enjoy snuggling into his scarf that he had added when they would be out in the chilly weather.

That worked as well.

With his own borrowed creature securly on his person, Gideon bent down beside the small corral ready to look over the remaining unclaimed ones. Though as his gaze passed over them much as he had when chosing the pygmy puff on his shouler, he couldn't really tell any outward clue.

Oakey starred down at the "Leftover" Pygmy Puffs. His eyes grazed over a Yellow one then a Green one then another one that was Purple like Batman and a Red one like Gideon's. Oakey's eyes must have gone back and forth like he was trying to find the forever evasive golden snitch in the pile of puff balls.

He looked to Gideon who was still looking for anything to call a gender difference. This is a hopeless cause. I think it's safe to say it's impossible to tell if these little things are male or female.

Sophie nodded. It was not possible that they ate only gross stuff. Not possible! But what? And how were they supposed to figure that out?

Whoa! He had a lot of food in his bag! Sophie chuckled. "We could try feeding them, if you don't mind wasting your food." Not exactly wasting, of course, they would be feeding those adorable creatures and making them happy! "I've got some chocolate frogs here!" She added, getting one out of her bag. She opened it and offered it to her Pygmy Puff. It sniffed and licked it a bunch of times, but didn't actually eat it. Did that mean her Pygmy Puff didn't eat chocolate or it just didn't want it now? It had licked it...

Frowning, Sophie looked back at Jory. "What do you think this means?"

Jory was interested to see it only licked the chocolate but he was puzzled as Sophie at the Puff's reaction. "Maybe it likes chocolate but not too much?'' he suggested. ''What do you think?''

"Lets try the apple first,'' Jory said breaking a small bit of his apple. He held it in front of Furball who sniffed it and then in a flash, the apple piece vanished into its mouth. "Look at that,'' Jory said ''He likes apples.'' Jory fed it another piece.

Then she watched as Jory fed his own Puff. Aawwwww!!! She smiled widely when the apple piece vanished into the creature's mouth. "That was so adorable!!!" She said, still letting her Puff - which definitely needed a name - lick the chocolate frog. "What else did you say you had in your bag?"

Things had worked out, but she still didn't like remembering that time. She'd looked up as Professor Williamson had suggested the note down the discussion points and then pair up, however. Settling Nuage on her lap, she searched her bag for some parchment, then quickly noted the information down.

things we know
magical creatures
girls seem to like them
resemble overly fuzzy hamsters
round balls of fluff
eat snot
trainable
found at WWW's in Diagon Alley
first bred by Fred/George Weasley
hum/purr
miniature puffskeins

things we want to know
exception to the Ban on Experimental Breeding???
eat what???
why are they so adorable???
can be trained to NOT eat snot???
what does pygmy mean???
how does one discover a puff's gender???
what magical properties do they possess??

Once she'd finished that, however, she looked up to see if anyone needed a partner. It seemed like most people were finding partners much easier than she usually did.

But, as she continued to look around, one hand protectively making sure her pygmy puff didn't get jostled in her lap, she noticed a little Hufflepuff quietly asking for a partner. Picking her puff up again, she settled it on her shoulder as she walked over. "I'll partner up with you," she said gently, giving the girl a smile. "I'm Stella, by the way. And this is Nuage," she added, gesturing at the pygmy puff on her shoulder, kind of perched on top of the strap of her school bag.

Glenn saw an older student making her way for her she listened as the girl introduced herself, "I'm Glenn." She nodded, "And this is Elliott." Glenn gestured towards her deep purple pygmy puff that was making squeaks as it untangled itself from her curls. She helped it do so, chuckling as it wove its way deeper into her hair. "Hold still a minute." Glenn muttered, untangling her pygmy puff from her blonde curls and placing him in her lap where he would hopefully not find a way to tangle something.

"Do you know if you can tell the gender?" She asked Stella, looking criptictcally at her pygmy puff as he (Or she thought he was a he) rolled around her lap, playing in the folds of her grey school skirt.

"Is it something to do with the colour or something?"

Or was it a she? Maybe he should've just said 'it' instead.

"I think I would like him to meet you too," Williamson seemingly echoed Keefer, standing up from his bale of hay and leaving Nerf there with a little pat. "I'll just go fetch him and be right back...."

He started climbing up the stairs built in to the side of the barn wall and was quickly lost from sight in the loft way up above the students' heads. They all kept working, however, and Williamson returned after a brief interlude with a larger version of a yellow puff balanced carefully on his head. Once he reached the floor of the bar, he removed the creature from its perch and passed it over to Keefer.

It was then that Williamson remembered Alyssa had been trying to say something to him but he couldn't hear her from up high in the rafters.

"No, Alyssa, I'd like you to wait here, please. You all have made great progress with figuring out the diet of a pygmy puff but I'm going to have to put your research to a halt for now. Please be patient and save your thoughts for your homework because we really need to move on."

Now. Moving on. Williamson smiled around at the students and clapped his hands a few times loudly to get their attention. "Class," he announced, "I know most of you are still busy working, but we really, really," Willy glanced at his wristwatch, "really need to move on now if we're going to have time for all the activities. I want you all to pass in your notes on what you discovered and/or read them aloud to us before you pass them in. We're going to compile a class set of these notes and discoveries and, for homework you will have the opportunity to continue your research."

He nodded and then gestured loosely to the puffskein being passed around. "This is Hogwarts' own puffskein Ronald. As you can see, he is obviously larger, heavier, and fluffier than your own miniature versions of him, the pygmy puffs. He's just a friendly and cuddly, however, so take your time getting to know him.

"Now then, I'd like to continue by having groups share their discoveries. Who here tried to figure out what gender their puff is? Raise your hands and somebody share with me your thought process on this puzzle."

Yeah, Williamson knew this was one of the trickier questions, but it would make sense to get it out of the way sooner rather than later.

Hmm, how do they figure out what gender a Pygmy Puff is? Vickers angled his head as he looked at the purple creature resting comfortably in the crook of his arm. He picked Hendrix up and turned it around gently in his hands. He named the Puff Hendrix for the practical reason what it looked like it had an afro, not because he knew it was male. He tried to examine the creature a little further to find discernible features if it was male, but he couldnt really tell. He leafed through his textbook-- it didnt say anything about how to determine gender, whether it was for Pygmy Puffs or for Puffskeins. And yet, as history has recorded, pygmy puffs do breed. Tentatively he raised his hand and replied "Professor, perhaps Pygmy Puffs are the type of creatures that are asexual, maybe they dont really have a gender that is recognizably male or female, and thus perhaps their breeding methods are more similar to certain amphibians and plants, where they can self-fertilize or maybe just 'clone' themselves."

Zhenya looked over at Ira and shrugged, holding her hand up.

"Professor, we discussed the issue of training them against eating snot! I thought that a good strategy would be perhaps to make up our own food that looked and felt like snot, but see there could be extra nutrients added to it, and I guess somehow you could find out how to make it taste like snot too. That way, they wouldn't have to eat body produced snot, but they could have this snot replaced formula as a meal," she suggested.

Turning to Ira she whispered, "Did you want to add anything?"

Steele...I am counting on you to get the reference here <3

Handing in the notes from the summary that she had given earlier on the discussion between her and Vickers, Kurumi returned to her spot in the hay and thought about the question at hand when Vickers spoke up. He took the words right out of her mouth and offered him an encouraging smile. See, he WAS capable of speaking up in class.

After a few more moments, Kurumi raised her hand. "I actually had the same thoughts as Vickers did in regards to pygmy puffs and their genders," she said. "I have read about some species of mammals that use over fifty percent of their metabolism for reproduction and that they are born pregnant and, given the proper conditions, could be capable of producing a litter of ten in twelve hours time." Which, over a period of a few days could cause a MASSIVE amount of fur and trouble. "I thought that perhaps pygmy puffs were duel sexed and not either or."

Do you have any idea where to start? Because I don't have a clue." Lily said chuckling a bit. She had never worked with magical or possibly magical creatures before, so she had no clue what to start with.

"I'm not exactly sure," Jezz said picking at some of the hay. Just as she was about to suggest something Professor Williamson spoke.

SPOILER!!: Alyssa

Yeah, Williamson knew this was one of the trickier questions, but it would make sense to get it out of the way sooner rather than later.

ooc: Sorry guys, but I've given you like 7 pages worth of time to work with your partners! lol go ahead and answer the question now and/or compile your notes in one post and RP "passing them in." I'll post again tomorrow afternoon asking a new group to share, then we have some fun activities and games to play! woo! =)

Jezz shrugged and said raising her hand, "I just gave my Pygmy Puff a gender neutral name, Quibbles. Isn't it possible that it could be like the hermaphrodite snail?" In which case she could not give it a gender based name.

Elise shrugged, nodding slightly. "They were just random pictures that came up when I thought of the word 'Pygmy'." she smiled, moving on. "Right. So Pygmy Puffs are basically unimportant dwarf-like balls of fluff. No offense, Honey," she laughed lightly, patting the Puffer on top of her head.

"I have some baby tomatoes and salad leaves in my bag,"
she grinned, cocking her head to one side. "We could see if they eat them... And not snot. That's just disgusting."

About them not doing anything, she was just about to respond when Honey yanked her hair. Hard. "Ow!" Elise nodded. "Probably not... Thy're probably just puffskiens, minus magical properties and size...."

In short, they were just... there. And actually did virtually nothing! Scribbling all that down, Elise glanced at the Slytherin for approval and held the notes to her. She might want to hand them in, and maybe add some more...

Picking up the Puffskien that was being passed around, she hugged him close to her. He was just like a teddy bear! Responding to the Professor's question, she smiled. "I don't think they have a gender, professor," she replied, patting the adorable! puffskein. "Maybe they're just... Both?" she finished, passing the puff to the next person.

Shrugging, she wrote some more notes in her doodle-filled notebook. Not like identifying puffskein genders was her specialty or anything...

Oh she was a clever one, seeing as she too had now turned her tag in a way so that he could read it. Renesmee. Good, now that they knew each other's names, they could finally get started, right? Oh, no apparently not. Now she was...pouting? Lewis usually ignored things like that unless the reason was really really obvious to him and he thought that he could help in some way. In this case he didn't but seeing as they were partners now he figured he'd have to ask. "You okay?" There now at least she would think he cared.

Lewis glanced back at Renesmee's Pygmy Puff when she mentioned him before returning his gaze back to the piece of parchment in front of him. Nodding slowly at her words, he then proceeded to make a list of the characteristics she had mentioned like lazy, crazy, energetic, aggressive. At her last bit he stopped writing and looked up at her again, a rather weird look on his face. "He acts like a girl?!" Okay, this was very much not helping. He couldn't exactly put this down as a typical characterstic of male Pygmy Puffs.

And then she was asking him. "Well, I guess we could just put your Pygmy Puff somewhere with a couple of other Pygmy Puffs and wait for mating season." WAS there something like a mating season for them? "Then the ones he's trying to...err...reproduce with are the female ones." At least, assuming that the Pygmy Puffs themselves knew the difference. "I...guess they don't have any obvious, like, physical differences, right?" No, that would be too easy. Hang on. "Or, have you noticed anything with yours?" He asked the other Hufflepuff seriously with his eyebrows slightly raised.

What was it with people? Why did every single person, always ask her if she was alright, or upset whenever she pouted. If something was wrong she'd frown not pout. Pouting was her thinking face, and what she had been thinking about was just why he's pygmy puff sisn't have a name, not that Lewis knew that unless he was a mind reader..which he probably wasn't.

Trying not to loose her temper she switched her pout into a small smile. "Yes fine, fine..just..um..Whats your pygmy puffs name?" she said quietly because she was just a little shy at times. Anyway..names weren't too important the work was, which was why Ness wouldn't have minded if he didn't have a name for the puff ball.

Notes...Nessie had to write notes. Nessie watched as Lewis took out he's parchment and started writing. She needed to do the same right? "Sometimes he does." She gave Lewis a small nod and then qrote her name, year and house on a clean piece of parchment. Once she was done with that she started writing Puffle's characteristics down, but was stopped when she heard what Lewis had to say.

O__________________O

WHAT? Nessie blinked and then looked up from her parchment to look at the older badger with shocked eyes. Okay yes that may have been true...but wasn't it just a tad awkward of him to say something like that? And one thing for sure, there was NOT a single chance, Nessie would let her little boy would be forced into reproducing..or whatever. "Errrr...yeah..I guess that could work but my Puffle'sisn'tgoinganywhere." she mumbled more to herself than him. It was really awkward, but school work was school work which was why she tried her best to ignore the awkwardness. As for apearance, Ness was surely convinvced that there was no physical differences between the females and males. "They all look the same to me." she gave him another nod.

Now? They had to hand in their notes already? Ness looked at Lewis's notes..he had way more written down than her, all she had on her page was not even one sentence. He would hand in he's then if he was okay with that?

And there was now a puffskein being passed around too, it looked just as cute and as fluffy as a pygmy puff, just a bit bigger of course. Nessie once again got distracted as she looked at the Professor again. Why did he have to be so good looking? She couldn't stop staring, but luckily this time she actually heard the question he had asked the class. Gender? that was exactly what the two had done, well tried to. She slowly raised her hand. "Pro..ff.ess..or well..um..Lewis..and I wetriedthat." She was mumbling again...which was all because thats what happened to her when she was around really good looking boys. "So..er..I..sa..id..that..it'ss..be..cause theyactdifferently?" Going bright red from all her stuttering and mumbling, she moved her gaze off from the professor and looked at Lewis for some sort of help. He could say he's part if he wanted, even if she did think it was wierd it was better than her mumbling answer.

He didnt know why he was so frightened to meet one.. but now that he had.. maybe meeting other older students would not be so bad afterall.. Now what other question to answer.. he looked at the board.. hmm.. "Now thats a good question.. what do I want to figure out? umm..." he hesitated looking at his pygmy and Arya's pygmy.. they both looked the same except color.. exactly the same?!!! he looked at the board.. and then looked at Arya and her pygmy "Well I think looking at our pygmies.. gender comes to mind.. how do we know if they are male or female.." he said with a smile.. that is what he wanted to know about his pygmy and hers.. "What do you think Arya?" he asked.. he also wanted her opinion on this.. or if she had something else that SHE wanted to know.. if she did.. they can go for that..

Oh... they'd run out of time.

Well they could still listen in on the other thoughts and ideas that were being shared, right? Arya patted the seat beside her Mo, then turned her attention over to the professor and other students. And a puffskein was being passed around! She bounced it in her hands a bit when it circulated over to her and then passed it to her second year partner.

Alyssa was disappointed that they would have to carry on their research later but then again the Professor was right. They would end up spending the entire term here if they didn't move on. So she went back to join Taylor and quickly jotted down notes to what the other students revealed about their findings.

Does a Pygmy Puff have Magical Powers?
Steps to maybe figure it out...

1. See what animals the Pygmy is similar to.

3. See what intelligence it has by trying to communicate.
4. Place things near it to see if it uses powers to move the objects closer or farther away.

The Puffskein is a scavenger that will eat anything from leftovers to spiders, but it has a particular preference for sticking its tongue up the nose of sleeping wizards and eating their bogies," he finished, chuckling a bit. The horrified look on Ella's face was somehow gratifying.

Ella looked at Keefer with wide eyes and frowned. "Well, I certainly don't want a puffskein for a pet! Imagine if you were sleeping and woke up to a tongue in your nose? Ickkkk!" She was happy she had never encountered a hungry puffskein, even if they were cute.

"Erm-I guess I would too..." Ella said unconvincingly. "I mean as long as it doesn't go for my nose!" she said with a serious expression. No way was that guy or girl going near there! "I wonder what pygmypuffs eat.." Ella added, curiously. "I mean do you think they are scavengers too?"

"Actually... they DO have genders," Williamson told the class, glancing at the few who had thought pygmy puffs have both parts or no gender at all. "There are subtle differences in appearance, which I will go over in just a second, as well as more... ah, internal differences which become apparent when one dissects a deceased pygmy puff, for example."

Not that, you know, he had ever dissected one. He had just studied about them in university.

Turning to Ira she whispered, "Did you want to add anything?"

And ah, another group had had a discovery too, though this was one not related to gender! "That is..... a really good idea," he remarked after a thoughtful second. "You should definitely experiment on that, perhaps in the potions lab, and then sell your results to Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. You two could have a few good galleons coming your way!" Anything else to add about pygmy puff genders?

Yes.

"Male pygmy puffs are FLUFFIER than the female ones!" Selena exclaimed, one hand in the air and the other putting Kent back on her head. Selena was pretttttty sure of that. Kent and Violet proved it. Kent was fluffier than Violet was. And nicer. Because Kent let her pet him. And Violet... didn't. And she had proved that by petting Kent. So she'd never know if Kent was actually fluffier, but he looked fluffier.

Oh no. They had run out of time. But she supposed it was okay since her and Edvard really hadn't been able to say that much about the magical properties. Hopefully other groups had been more successful.

Listening as students shared their thoughts on Pygmy Puff genders, she snuggled the Puffskein as it was passed over to her. It was so snuggly, she wondered if she wanted one as a pet or not. Then she passed it along to someone else.

They hadn't discussed it, but Keefer thought he may take a stab at it. Both hands in the air, he waited for the Professor to look his way before beginning. "Is it possible that coloration is different? I know male birds are often more brightly colored in order to attract a mate. It's possible the pygmy puffs are like that, or maybe certain fur colors can only be male or only be female?"

And speaking of fur... "Or perhaps the texture of the fur is different."

We diddnt get arround to discussing the activity, but Female pygmy puffs have a higher pitched squeek then males do. Olivia said as her pygmy puff ran along her arm.Oh, and whats the difference between a pygmy puff and a puffskien, besides their size. I mean, would a baby puffskien technically be a pygmy puff?

Oh, so THAT was why she had been pouting?! Seriously? Again, and people thought he was weird. "I...don't know. It's not mine. I just picked it a couple of minutes ago." Lewis replied with an affectionate smile for the Pygmy Puff. Wasn't it just adorable with those huge eyes and all?! Then he added since it seemed to upset her so much, "Why, do you have a suggestion?" Just so to get this over with and keep on getting this answering those questions thing done.

Alright, but back to work. He did act like a girl sometimes? And she didn't think that was odd. Or at least not exactly very useful information in this case. "Alright." After staring at her for a moment, Lewis shrugged and added it to the list nonetheless. Maybe it would be important. Maybe THAT was the major differences between male and female Pygmy Puffs. Not very likely but what did he know.

Okay that reaction was...odd to say the least. Blinking right back at her, confusion plastered across his face Lewis waited for her to tell him what was going on. He really wasn't any good at guessing what was happening in other people's heads. Did she not like his idea? It would totally work though. Unless they accidentally put him somewhere with only male Pygmy Puffs. Well, then they'd know too. The plan was foolproof.

Seriously? Alright, he'd have never guessed that that was the problem here. "I don't think I'm allowed to like breed Pygmy Puffs anyway." Lewis stated with a nod, in an attempt to seem reassuring. He wasn't going to take her Pygmy Puff anywhere. This was all just theoretical thinking. Right? Just nodding at her next comment, Lewis added No obvious physical difference to his list. Well, that wasn't exactly a lot they had there. And the professor was already asking them to tell the class what they'd found out.

Seeing as Renesmee had started talking, Lewis averted his attention back to his cute little Pygmy Puff. Huh. Maybe they DID something to attract the females? Or maybe the females did something to attract the males. But then again they still wouldn't know which was which.

And why the heck was Renesmee apparently unable to speak properly?!

"They act differently.... yes! Yes they do. You all might not have noticed it yet, particularly if you're a new pygmy puff owner, but male and female puffs DO act differently, especially during mating season! Good job!"

He smiled gently at the Huff and looked to her partner. "Do you have anything to add, Lewis?"

And then he heard his name being said. By the professor. He should probably answer, right? "I, well, like she...said-" Could you call it 'say' actually? More like stuttering. "-we assumed that there might be some differences in behavior. Or well, since we know that her Pygmy Puff is a male we could just put him in a huge cage-" Because he didn't want them to feel imprisoned or anything."- with a lot of other Pygmy Puffs during mating season and well observe. See what her Pygmy Puff does. And to whom." Get it? Yes? Somehow his partner hadn't been too thrilled about this idea, though.

Then because his gaze had dropped down to his Pygmy Puff and he remembered what he had just been thinking about earlier, he added, "Or maybe the males do something during mating season to attract the females. Like dance around them or something. Like a rooster." Looking back down at the Pygmy Puff, he added more to himself than to the professor, "Okay, maybe not dance." Because he really couldn't exactly see it doing a dance. Maybe it would flap its ears or something.

Alyssa didn't know which question the Professor would be asking next, so she quickly checked the list that Taylor and her had complied and got it ready just in case, they were the next ones to get called up.

Text Cut: List of Food that Pygymy Puffs eat

1. Cookies
2. Leftover tuna sandwich (check)
3. ants (check)
4. lettuce (check)
5. carrots
6. apples (check)
7. chocolate frogs (check)
8. nose boogers
9. spiders (check)
10. hay (check)
11. rats
12. leaves (check)
13. pencil
14. shoelaces
15. hair

16. paper
17. grass
18. jello
19. worms
20. pudding
21. pie

Unfortunately, they hadn't gotten to test more of the food on their list, but Alyysa figured that for now it would have to do. So she sat and waited with Taylor for the Professor to request answers from the next group.

Tayla jotted down 'small' and 'fluffy' while waiting for her partner to share her own thoughts. When Butterfly did, they could pass their list to the professor.

He turned and tried to listen to the stuttering Hufflepuff, but it was hard to make out what she was saying through all the starts and stops in her speech. Er. Will ended up just nodding at what she said and took a minute to pause and translate.

He smiled gently at the Huff and looked to her partner. "Do you have anything to add, Lewis?"

And ah, another group had had a discovery too, though this was one not related to gender! "That is..... a really good idea," he remarked after a thoughtful second. "You should definitely experiment on that, perhaps in the potions lab, and then sell your results to Weasley's Wizard Wheezes. You two could have a few good galleons coming your way!" Williamson was willing to bet loads of little witches would line up to buy that product.

The professor looked to the rest of the class.... "Anyone else have anything to add about pygmy puff genders?"

Tayla pet Ronald as the Puffskein was passed to her. "Hello there, Ronald!" Tayla gave the Puffskein a little hug.

Tayla looked up as the professor asked about the gender of their puff. She had no idea how to find out and so remained silent for a while, thinking. Her pygmy puff Teacup made a short sound, which gave Tayla an idea.

"I'm not sure how, Professor, but I think you can tell the difference by how they sound when they squeak. And perhaps...their colour? They come in different shades after all... Maybe the darker shades are one gender, and the lighter shades another?" Tayla was thinking aloud and hoped she at least got close to being correct.

Jory agreed with Sophie. "We should write it down,'' he said as he himself began to scribble down on his book.

At Sophie's exclamation, Jory looked down. "Oh! Cool! They like it. I wonder why they took so long to eat it,'' he mused.

Jory grabbed Furball and place him in front of himself. Taking a bit of chicken he held it in front of his Puff's mouth and waited to see if he would eat it.

It was so big and cute and fluffy and adorable and... just now Sophie noticed how quiet the class was and that there were groups handing in notes and answering for everyone to hear.

Oops! They were so focused on their task that didn't even noticed when everybody around them stopped working. Sophie poked Jory and pointed to where Professor Williamson was. "I think we'd better stop now before we lose house points!" She whispered to her partner.

TakemetotheBurrow 02-14-2012 03:00 PM

Ella and Keefer hadn't really discussed the gender question as there was lots of talk about the name and about...tongues! Wait a minute...Ella raised her hand as an idea popped into her head. "Professor, could the length of their tongues help you to tell which is male and which is female?" It was a long shot but Ella figured she'd give it a shot anyway and waited for the Professor's reply.

FireboltAvis88 02-14-2012 04:40 PM

Alyssa quickly noted the possibilities the groups had to determine the gender of the Pygmy Puffs in her journal. She would finalize the list once the Professor confirmed what they were. She couldn't wait for the Professor to ask them to present their findings.

Too lazy to quote..Professor W, and Lewis. xD

'Its not mine?' But the pygmy puff was he's, well at least for the time being. "Yeah, but still it deserves a name." It was only right. Could you imagine if you had to be nameless , that wouldn't really make you feel good about yourself."Its a girl right? So how about ...Cuddles." That was a cute name wasn't it? And the puff ball did look very cuddly.

There was more and more confused blinking going on, and before Nessie could control herself she started to giggle. If Lewis thought she was weird before, he'd probably think she was insane now nevermind just weird. It wasn't her fault that she reacted oddly to things, it was just who she was as a person and if he didn't want to acept it, it was he's loss not hers..right?

She was calmer now that she knew for certain he wouldn't touch her little baby. Even though puffles did annoy nessie a huge amount, she still loved him to bits and he was very special to her. "Good, because nobody is touching my Puffles." Yes she may have sounded rude, but she was just being protective.

Why wasn't Lewis saying anything? Ness looked at him some more, trying to give him looks that would make him speak. He obviously didn't notice though. It was too late anyway, the Professor started to speak again.

The way Professor Williamson spoke, made Nessie stare at him in awe again. He had such a sweet, pleasant voice and she liked it, just liked she liked most things about him. At least, even though she had stuttered what she had said was quite right.

O__________________O

He was talking about this mating season too? What was wrong with these people? Or worse, what was wrong with herself? Maybe she was the only one that found it weird, that's what it seemed like. Everyone else seemed to be alright with the topic, except her. At least Lewis started to talk now, but still they kept the mating topic going on. Seeing as she couldn't say much and she didn't like the subject , she didn't feel like listening anymore which was why as weird as she might have looked she took her two index fingers and blocked her ears.

Then she turned to Ira to exchange a giant smile.

Now... what about their genders? She didn't really know anything about the anatomy of a Pygmy Puff, but she raised her hand anyway, "I don't know anything about their gender... but could they like different activities, or do they prefer the same sort of activities?" she asked.

She knew some boys liked to play sports, and some girls liked to play dress-ups, but sometimes it was the other way around too. If the Pygmy Puffs did like different activities, there could be an observational tactic in determining their gender.

Oh wow, he never would've thought about that. He made a little scribble on his notes.

"Good one," he said quietly, nodding in approval. She was starting to come out of her shell a bit, which was good. He didn't want her to spend the rest of the year afraid to speak up in class... or afraid of older students, which was probably worse overall.

"Although, if you don't fancy having their tongues snake all about, then I'm guessing you won't like having to check for length, either" he joked.

Tayla wrote those down, too. Her pygmy puff, Teacup, made a tiny squeak. Tayla jotted one more reason down. "And they make sounds with tiny little voices!" Tayla smiled fondly at her pygmy puff.

"I think we should pass this in a bit. Let's just add another reason maybe...Anything else?"

"I would have gotten a purple one if I had saw it, but my little green one is just as cute colored." She thought."Maybe because you can carry them around in your pocket and snuggle them to death."

Annabelle felt sorry they didn't get a chance to discuss but she agreed what her partner said. "Hmmm i think i want to know, what is the rarest color a pygmy puff can be? and what is the most common color?"

Olivia thought this was a good questions. Can there be black or white pygmy puffs? she asked, and she also brought out the notes she was taking earlier on ways to get a pygmy to stop eating boogers. She thought it would work if we scared a pygmy out of eating boogers.

Anything else to add about pygmy puff genders?

"This is true!" Williamson acknowledged with much enthusiasm, smiling at Selena the Pygmy Puff expert. Good job to her! "Males are usually fluffier in an effort to attract females with their beauty." Interesting fact.

"It is possible, and you're right in comparing pygmy puffs to birds. Males of both species tend to be brighter in color."

He hadn't noticed anything about fur textures, though.

William had to hold back a laugh at the mental imagery that came from putting a male pygmy puff in a cage full of female pygmy puffs during mating season. That was just...well........ and that was how pygmy puffs were created, kids. That was how.

He didn't say that though, no. Instead, Williamson listened thoughtfully to the boy's answer and noded slowly. "The males tend to make a sort of high-pitched humming sound above our human level of hearing during mating season, sort of as a call to females." He eyed the class to make sure they were writing this down. "But other than that, there really are no major differences in behavior that I have noticed between the two genders."

"Yes, excellent, as we've said, you can tell by their squeak whether a puff is male or female. There's actually a prototype for a pygmy puff squeak-o-meter out on the markets now, so look for that coming to your local pet shop. "Professor, could the length of their tongues help you to tell which is male and which is female?" It was a long shot but Ella figured she'd give it a shot anyway and waited for the Professor's reply.

Hmm. Another good question!

"I've never actually thought of that, Ella," Will nodded, "but I suppose you could! I would assume that females, actually, have longer tongues, since they tend to be slightly larger than the males." Another fun fact for the class to jot down.

"Great idea!" Williamson grinned at the clever Slytherin. "We might be testing your theory of which activities pygmy puffs like best in just a few moments, but for now, I'll like to sum up what we've learned so far."

He flicked his wand at the empty wall space beside him so the notes came up nice and bright, replacing the ones from earlier.

Pygmy Puff Genders
  • Males are brighter in color
  • Males are fluffier
  • Males make an extremely high humming sound to attract females
  • Females have longer tongues
  • Females have higher-pitched squeaks
  • Both have different reproductive organs

"So," Williamson cleared his throat awkwardly, not exactly knowing how to phrase this next part, "If you can't determine your pygmy puff's gender by one of the first five distinctions, you can always try to locate its hidden ah.... reproductive organs, which are unique to each gender, and um, rather difficult to find...."

And he was not going to go into any more detail on that. Ahem. The professor picked up his own pygmy puff and perched him on his head, grateful for the distraction Nerf provided, and instead looked around the barn for another group and another topic.

"Let's talk about what pygmy puffs eat! I know a lot of you tried various creative methods of figuring this one out! Somebody, please share."

Keefer was surprised to get an affirmative answer from Williamson. It had mostly just been a guess. I suppose it did match up with other examples in nature, though. So maybe it was a moderately educated guess.

With then end of discussion on that topic and the posting of the notes, Keefer got back out his parchment and quill. He copied down was was written, exactly as it was written. He tended to remember things on tests or in life by closing his eyes and picturing it on the board, some notes, or a poster. Thus it was best to copy down the version he was currently seeing.

Keefer earnestly hoped he would never have to resort to checking a pygmy puff's gender in the.. more invasive manner. I hope a bunch of first years don't start giggling. That was the worst. The giggling.

Fortunately, the professor decided to speed the conversation along. Diet, right. We didn't talk about that. But that didn't mean he couldn't take a stab at the answer. He raised both hands.

"Professor Williamson, me and Ella didn't talk about this, but I think it makes sense that they would eat similar diets to Puffskeins. I mean, they were bred from Puffskeins and share many of their qualities, so it makes sense. Since Puffskeins are scavengers and aren't particularly picky about what they eat, I would assume pygmy puffs also have a wide variety of foods they will consume."

Of course, he could be completely off, as well. It had been known to happen.

Hey Ju 02-15-2012 06:54 PM

Oh! Sophie and Jory had worked on that question! She raised her hand while standing up to able to look at Professor Williamson. There were a lot of taller students there!

"Professor, we tried feeding our Pygmy Puffs and wrote down what they ate and did not eat." She looked at Jory, indicating the parchment where he had been writing the list, then back at Professor Williamson. "We tried Chocolate Frogs, chicken, wheat bread and..." What was the other thing again? She looked down at Jory. "Oh yeah! An apple!" Which was the thing they ate ADORABLY!

"They didn't seem to like chicken and wheat bread, but they ate the chocolate frog and the apple!" Sophie nodded while she spoke. Then she looked curious. "Does that mean that these Pygmy Puffs don't like these things or that aaaall Pygmy Puffs don't eat chicken and wheat bread?" As in, do they have different gastronomic taste or something?

Including Taylor as well.

Alyssa waited while the others made their presentations and when nobody else answered, she raised her hand and presented what Taylor and her had come up with.

"Professor, Taylor and I, both came up with a list of food that we thought the Pygmy Puffs would most likely eat, and like Keefer said, we assumed that since they were related to the Puffskeins, that they might also have the same similar eating habits. This is the list that we've worked on so far.

But there were some stuff that they wouldn't eat and it makes sense because we wouldn't like eating them either. We haven't gotten round to seeing whether they liked eating nose boogers, even though that's what Puffskeins are known to like, because neither of us had any nose boogers to spare right now. We also ran out of food to give them but we'll continue with our food taste once we replenish and get access to the dead rats in your creature food supply cabinet.

Amelia listened attentively as her fellow classmates shared their thoughts about Pygmy Puff genders. It was rather interesting, and she was determined to see if Pixie was in fact a female; if not it would have to be remedied. She wondered if she could name the Puff after her brother in that case.

When the points were recorded on the board, Amelia quickly jotted them down into her notebook before looking around to see what her classmates would have to say about what Pygmy Puffs ate. Since Edvard and her didn't do that topic she'd stay silent and just write some more notes.

Annabelled examined Squishy. Her fur seemed to be shorter and less brighter than Flipert. So the only conclusion that her pygmy was a female. Annabelle went inside to see Squishy's mouth. Squishy was very gentle and let her look at her tongue. It seemed long and she also had a high squeak but she knew Squishy was a female already. "Here Olivia, Squishy has a long tongue." Annabelle said as she showed her.
"Hmm looks like Squishy is making a new friend." Annabelle smiled. Squishy had a high squeak which means she likes Flippert. "I think they will become best friends. Taylor took down the notes. She listern as Alyssa told the professor their discoveries. Tay tried to resist (but fail horriblely) to not wrinkle up her nose in disgust at the rats and snot. She had made up her mind to not test those two things because 1.rats are gross and carry diseases.... especially dead ones and 2. the snot was also gross but also indecent. She wouldnt have any problems testing anything other than two things though. When Alyssa was finished talking, Taylor added, "They seem to plants a lot..... maybe that is because plants are natural? or maybe it helps soothe their upset stomaches kinda of like what grass does for dogs?" She wasn't sure if that was right or not so it came out a little bit like questions.

Zhenya hadn't thought of this question at all, but she was quite excited to test out what activities they liked. She had a quick thought and raised her hand, "Professor do they eat little insects, like ladybugs, flies, cockroaches and things? Or do they live on a more herbivore diet of things like grasses, and leaves, and vegetables and fruits?" she didn't know, so she thought she would ask whether they were omnivores or herbivores. Well, she didn't think they were carnivores.

As the new notes appeared on the board Ella started to copy them over to her notebook, wanting everything in case they would need it for homework. She tried not to giggle as the Professor talked about the puffs-er-lady and gentleman parts. She would much rather find out if they were males or females by one of the other ways listed on the wall. Besides, she couldn't imagine Barnabus would be happy if she went looking for his private parts!

Then the class was talking about food and Ella became hungry. Why oh why did that always happen at the mention of food? Her and Keefer hadn't discussed that topic either but she was curious about something. "Professor, I was wondering if there is anything that pygmy puffs shouldn't eat. I mean are they allergic to any foods? My dog can't eat chocolate because it makes her really sick."

Minerva sat quietly listening to the other students. She waited until it was time to talk about their research, magic powers. She played with the pygmy puff in her lap a bit. It was so cute she defiantly needed one of her own.

Pygmy Puff Genders

  • Males make an extremely high humming sound to attract females
  • Females have longer tongues
  • Females have higher-pitched squeaks
  • Both have different reproductive organs

And he was not going to go into any more detail on that. Ahem. The professor picked up his own pygmy puff and perched him on his head, grateful for the distraction Nerf provided, and instead looked around the barn for another group and another topic.

Selena beamed at the professor. Of course it was true. IT WAS PROVEN. Kent was fluffier. Enough said. She kicked her legs back and forth. The professor could say as he wished about attraction but to Selena it was just about being awesometastical. Yup.

She looked at the notes then at the green pygmy puff on the professor's head. Then frowned. HEY. That was Selena's thing. Psht. Professor was obviously jealous he wasn't Selena Zabini-Riddle. Because he was putting his pygmy puff on his head now. Ridonkeylous. The professor was a copycatter. Hmph. She would pay attention to this one though. And she had a few things to say about it as well.

"I put my pygmy puff in a basket of bread once. Kent didn't eat a bite of it. He started to eat someone's snot."

Yup. True story. What a waste of bread. Now... back to eying the professor for COPYING her pygmy puff balancing ways.

"I have some baby tomatoes and salad leaves in my bag,"
she grinned, cocking her head to one side. "We could see if they eat them... And not snot. That's just disgusting."

Sierra shrugged, as well. She knew they were just random guesses, not proven facts. They were also more than what Sierra had come up with, but she wouldn't admit that out loud, of course. She did smirk when the girl concluded that Pygmy Puffs were unimportant balls of fluff. "Pretty much," she said. "I mean, I've never heard of them doing anything significant, and I grew up in a pureblood household." She'd have heard of something by now, she'd guess.

Then she blinked. "You carry tomatoes and salad lettuce in your bag?" she asked. Maybe the girl just liked a quick snack every now and then. Or maybe she was half-rabbit. Who knew. "Well, let's give it a go then. So as long as the Puffs don't start eating snot..."

Sierra had literally just raised her hand to say something about male creatures usually being of a brighter color, when the professor waved his wand and summarized that and more right up on an empty space of wall. She read through the list then made a face at the thought of locating a Pygmy Puff's reproductive organs. Right. Err, ...she'd just trust the whole 'males are brighter' theory.

"Maybe the Pygmy Puff's eat types of plants," Sierra suggested, raising her hand. "Lettuce, maybe...or other plants." Anything with leaves, pretty much. "My partner has some tomatoes and lettuce in her bag." She gestured toward her partner. In other words, could they test the theory now?!

"It's nice to meet you, Glenn," Stella said, a bit curious at how the girl's name didn't quite seem like a normal girl's name. She wasn't about to question that, though, as they had better things to do than discuss their own names. She smiled as the purple pygmy puff burrowed itself deeper into the blonde's hair, however. "Elliot seems a bit nervous," she observed. her own pygmy puff seemed perfectly fine, perched on her shoulder, but then maybe Glenn's wasn't as used to so many people. She didn't know yet if Elliot was a personal pygmy puff or borrowed, after all.

"I don't," she said, in response to the question, as she craned her neck to look at Nuage for a moment. The tiny cloud-like puff wasn't telling her anything, though, so she turned back to the Hufflepuff after only a moment. "Maybe. It's an interesting idea, at least," she continued, only to get cut off by the professor as he brought everyone back together as a group to discuss the ideas from the groups. Apparently they'd run out of time, which she felt bad about, but now, it seemed they were going to possibly find out the actual answers to the question they'd briefly addressed.

"It is possible, and you're right in comparing pygmy puffs to birds. Males of both species tend to be brighter in color."

He hadn't noticed anything about fur textures, though.

"Good question," William tilted his head, "A baby puffskein is still bigger than a baby pygmy puff. So no, they're two different species now."

But, she was right about the squeaks. "Females do have a higher pitched squeak. Good."

That should make it much easier to tell whether a puff is male or female."

As for the shades... hmm. "Males tend to be brighter overall, but there is no specific color that one gender favors over another. Males can be pink and females can be green, so you just really have to play it by ear," pun intended, "to figure out which gender your puff belongs to."

Hmm. Another good question!

"I've never actually thought of that, Ella," Will nodded, "but I suppose you could! I would assume that females, actually, have longer tongues, since they tend to be slightly larger than the males." Another fun fact for the class to jot down.

Shifting Nuage back to her lap so she could take some parchment out of her bag, Stella wrote down everything that Professor Williamson had written down. Apparently her and Glenn hadn't been entirely wrong with the idea that male pygmy puffs were different, color-wise. not only that, but by that theory, Nuage was female. That was always interesting, although it only mattered if she actually bothered seeing if she could keep the pygmy puff after the lesson. That was still an idea, but for now she wanted to pay attention to the discussion.

Jory examined his 'Puff. He was likely to think Furballl was male. He was very bright in colour and quite fluffy.

Jory raised his hand.
"Professor, they seemed more inclined towards a plant based diet, I think. Although Sophie and I didn't get to try a lot of food, the 'Puffs really seemed to like apples and to an extent, chocolates as apposed to wheat bread and chicken.''

hark? is that a mating call?!

Kurumi, having already said her piece, sat in silence listening to her classmates as they shared their findings and theories about pygmy puffs. She had to admit that she was a little disappointed when Professor Williamson informed them that the creatures were not asexual. She would have liked for them to reproduce like crazy and fill the barn with fluffy cuteness. Jotting down some notes about gender identification, Kurumi decided to give it a shot with her own pygmy puff.

Removing the coral pink puff from her shoulder, Kurumi glanced around the area at the other pygmy puffs and tried to measure the brightness of its coat as opposed the others. Momotaro II's coat WAS rather bright. Much brighter than the coat on her former pygmy puff. Kurumi then slowly pat the top of the creature. Seemed fluffy enough.

Looking around nervously, Kurumi turned the pygmy puff over and began...searching through its fluff. Kurumi really had no idea what she was looking for, to be entirely honest. She was content believing that pygmy puffs were delivered by storks just like human babies were. But, Professor Williamson had mentioned something about reproductive organs, so on a search she went!

Suddenly, Momotaro II began to bounce in her hands, its big eyes locked on something near Kurumi.
SQUEEEEEEEEK! SQUEEK SQUEE SQUEEEEEEEEK!

Kurumi's eyes widened a bit. Looked like she didn't need to search for its...whatever...

Well, OBVIOUSLY it still deserved a name. Lewis couldn't help but frown at her slightly, seeing as her words came across as a little reproachful. He had never said it didn't. He just hadn't been sure they were allowed to. "I don't know." Duh. That's what they had been trying to find out. How to determine a Pygmy Puff's gender.

"But Cuddles sounds fine. It's a quite...unisex name." He nodded slowly before scooping up the yellow Pygmy Puff and holding it up. "Hullo Cuddles!" He said pursing his lips, using a voice which was normally reserved for talking to toddlers. But the little furball was just so cute! He even held right under Renesmee's nose for her to say hi to it too. Because you know, she had come up with the name and all. She was like its godmother now.

Raising his eyebrows at her, Lewis was still a little taken aback by how protective she seemed to be of her Pygmy Puff. "Yeah, I got that." Had she honestly thought that he was going to snatch him up and lock him up in a cage with a couple of other Pygmy Puffs. No, he wouldn't do that. He wasn't allowed to after all. His green eyes flickered over to where she had left (?) Puffles for a moment though. He didn't look very well protected right now.

OOOOOOOOOOH! Professor Williamson seemed to like his idea. At least he didn't react in any way like Renesmee had. Not the least bit. And hey, maybe that actually WAS the only way to find out which was which. Maybe they could try that some time. Because you know, the professor might be allowed to breed Pygmy Puffs. And he could help.

Oh. Okay, there seemed to be other possibilities to determine a Pygmy Puff's gender after all. Lewis quickly jotted down Males: high-pitched humming to attract females to his list and scratched out all the other behavior-related notes. He then tilted his head slightly to frown at Renesmee. It was her fault he had said the wrong thing after all. She had said that her Pygmy Puff was behaving differently. Yes.

His attention was caught by the professor again when he wrote down the distinctions on the wall. And Renesmee had been wrong AGAIN. They totally had reproductive organs. And they could be seen too. He turned his head again to point out exactly that when he saw that she had her two index fingers in her ears. What the...? A little unsure of what to do about it and CLEARLY confused too, Lewis finally reached out and poked her cheek to get her attention. There was something seriously wrong with this one.

Listening to what the other people said about what Pygmy Puffs ate, Lewis jotted down a few notes once in a while but his main focus was on his Pygmy Puff. They had visible reproductive organs and he was going to find it. It had to be somewhere. And he wanted to know if it was a he or a she. So scooping it up once again, Lewis softly turned it on its back and started to run his fingers over its belly. Hmm. There was nothing there, maybe-

Before he got any further however, the Pygmy Puff gave a little squeak and rolled over again so it could stand up. It then turned around to face the opposite direction, staring intently at...something. Following the direction of its gaze, Lewis found himself looking at Kurumi whose Pygmy Puff had started squeaking like crazy. What was going on?!

Looking back and forth between the two Pygmy Puffs a couple of times, Lewis was about to wave a hand before his Pygmy Puff's eyes to get it out of its stupor when it turned around quite swiftly so it was facing him again. And...had it just huffed?! Could Pygmy Puffs huff? And somehow it was holding its head a little higher too. "I think it's a girl." Lewis muttered to nobody in particular, stil staring down at the Pygmy Puff in his hands curiously.

Seriously, what had that been about?!

Suddenly loud squeeks were heard. "What...?" Sophie looked around and saw that the Gryffindor prefect's Pygmy Puff was having a fit or something. She looked at it curiously and just after a few seconds realized her own Pygmy Puff was going in its direction. "Hey, you!" She rushed and grabbed it. She looked from her Pygmy Puff to the prefect's. The latter was definitely brighter and looked a little fluffier than her own. "You're a girl then!" Cool, now she didn't have to bother searching for whatever she should search to find out its gender...

Tayla cuddled Teacup and tried to listen to her pygmy puff's squeak. It seemed high-pitched, so Teacup was probably a female... Maybe.

Tayla and her partner hadn't talked about what pygmy puffs eat, but Tayla decided to try feeding Teacup something from her pockets. She had chocolate and owl pellets. "Hmm..."

She fed Teacup the owl pellets first. It took a little nibble, but after a while it stopped eating them. Then Tayla fed Teacup a chocolate truffle. The pygmy puff nibbled on it until it was finished.

Tayla raised her hand. "I know they like eating bogies, Professor" - Ick! "I fed Teacup an owl pellet and she ate a little of it...but I don't think she liked it much. She does like my chocolate truffle though. She finished the whole piece I gave her." Tayla realized she had been referring to her pygmy puff as female, and though the squeak of her pygmy puff was high-pitched, Tayla wasn't completely sure about Teacup's gender yet.

Had she honestly thought that he was going to snatch him up and lock him up in a cage with a couple of other Pygmy Puffs. No, he wouldn't do that. He wasn't allowed to after all. His green eyes flickered over to where she had left (?) Puffles for a moment though. He didn't look very well protected right now.

Now she felt a little silly. Right course he didn't know, thats what they we're trying to figure out. Ness gave herself a facepalm and giggled to herself a little."Sorry, I'm a bit slow today." Surely he could see that already though, and he didn't need her to tell him, but meh she said it anyway.

True, Cuddles was a name that could have been used for boys and girls, but personally Nessie thought it was a girlish name, not that she'd tell Lewis she thought that. He seemed to be happy with the name, and there was no need for unwanted comotion. Raising a brow, she watched as the older badger talked to he's little fluff ball like it was some baby. Yes it was cute and all, but it wasn't a little infant it was a pygmy puff for Merlins sake. Nessie couldn't help but giggle he did look funny.

Wait.Oh he wanted her to say hi too? Ness looked at the little fluff ball and stroked its yellow fur. "Nawww, hello there cute little Cuddles." :| She sounded like she was talking to a baby too. She blinked a few times as she realised it. She didn't speak like that to Puffles did she? she hoped not.

Feeling a small nudge on her shoulder, Ness turned to the indigo ball of fluff, he had woken up now. "Good." she said sternly as she lifted her little Puff and held him close to her chest. Yes she was shnuggling him, and no she didn't care if peopel thought she looked weird. He was her little baby and nothing would stop that.

Yep, she didn't care what people thought. She would keep her ears blocked the whole lesson, even if it meant missing out on important information, she didn't care and no one could stop her..no one except Lewis.

"OWWWW!!" Out of shock Ness took her fingers away from her ears and instead put her hands over the spot in her cheek, where Lewis had poked her. "WHAT WAS THAT FOR?" Oops..she just shouted that, in front of everyone. >_< Nessie went bright red even brighter than her hair, not just because she was angry but because she was embarrassed too. Her shouting had frightened Puffles which was why he jumped away from her and went over to where Kurumi's pygmy puff was.

O___O

That was just insulting. Ness frowned and burried her head in her hands, that were on her desk. She didn't want to watch this either. People would hopefully leave her alone now.

Puffles on the other hand seemed to be squeeling too?

Sqqueeeeek! Squeeek!

Elise shuddered as WWW started talking about Pygmy Puff reproductive organs. Eww.... Moving on, they were unimportant balls of fluff. And the unimportant ball of fluff on her head yanked on her head, like... REALLLY HARD. Reaching up, she pried its claws or whatever they were out of her hair. NO MORE PAIN!

"You did?"
she asked her partner, before sifting through her mental files for records that matched. Realizing just then that she hadn't found her name out yet, she grinned sheepishly. "I'm Elise, by the way," she nodded, quite nearly toppling over from the force that was the Pygmy Puff. And the stupid ball of fluff re-attatched itself to her hair.

Pulling a ziplock bag from her bag, she looked at the Professor for a moment before holding a brightred baby tomato in her left hand. "I'm vegetarian," she shrugged, as if it explained everything. At least she wasn't part bunny...

Looking at the WWW, she raised her hand. "They're vegetarian!" she giggled before groaning in pain as the fluffball grabbed her hair again. "Professor, why's it yanking -ouch!- on my hair?!" she moaned in frustration before covering her ears to shield them from the high pitched humming that seemed do come from Honey.

But i think you are right they do eat dust, flies and food because i always drop food on the floor. Hmm i think they like to eat grass. I know mine does."

Olivia heal Flippert up beside squishy so they cound compaer tounges. Ya she does, and Flipperts is a bit shorter. Flippert made a lower squeek, They do like eachother
I think they eat pretty much anything she responded to Annabelle.
Time for the hidden reproductive organ check, she looked at her pygmes underbelly and did not see what she was expecting. Oh great, does this mean I have to mess arround and look for it! . Olivia seached arround in his fur and found the organ near the back.

Then Annabelle did what Olivia was doing. She checked Squishy's reprodcutive organs. She found the organ near the back. Squishy trsuted Annabelle and knew she would do no harm. "Yup i found it." as she put Squishy down. Then she started running round in circles squeaking. "Hahahah you are adorable." she said as she went down and pet her. Sqishy started eating some grass.

Ella's take on the squeaking

Ella looked around as many of the pygmy puffs started to squeak. That was weird, why were they squeaking? And why wasn't Barnabus joining in? Was he broken or something? Ella almost shook him before deciding that was a bad idea. She frowned at him and whispered softly, "What's wrong little guy? Don't want to join in?" She then raised her hand, curious. "Professor-uh are they squeaking cause they're like...I don't know attracted to another pygmy puff in the room or something?!" Was it mating season or were the pygmy puffs just starting a mutiny or something? She returned her gaze to Barnabus and whispered. "Don't try anything funny."

Selina rose her hand when their Professor asked what the little cutey puffs ate. Honestly, Selina knew what Owen ate, as to everyone else's puff...? Well, she could not be sure of that. Owen was sort of like his owner... he ate everything in sight. So Selina rose her hand and said, "My little guy kind of eats everything. I would have to say that the only thing I can be sure of is that puffs just sort of like food."

Sierra grew sort of wide-eyed when the Ravenclaw's Pygmy Puff began to jerk on the girl's hair. She might would laugh, but at the same time, she was too busy giving It (her own Pygmy Puff) a death glare. Honestly, if the creature pulled her hair, she'd probably pick it up and throw it across the room.

Oh, right. They hadn't given their names yet, which struck Sierra as being odd. She couldn't believe they'd been working together this whole time and hadn't even thought to address one another yet. Maybe this other girl, Elise she just heard, was pretty much like Sierra. Sierra didn't go out of her way to make friends. She wouldn't normally ask for a name. "Sierra," she said. "Fourth year Slytherin."

She watched as the girl tried to give her Pygmy Puff some lettuce. At least she'd also learned the girl was vegetarian. Now the lettuce and tomato in her bag made a little more sense. She edged away as Elise's Pygmy Puff started pulling on her hair again. "Maybe it's trying to tell you it's hungry?" she suggested. "I really hope it doesn't start eating snot soon..."

"This is true!" Williamson acknowledged with much enthusiasm, smiling at Selena the Pygmy Puff expert. Good job to her! "Males are usually fluffier in an effort to attract females with their beauty." Interesting fact.

Good."

Oh so they werent asexual? Vickers glanced at the contented Hendrix that has now returned to rest on his arm. Well he supposed if the Weasleys had trouble breeding them then a lot of it has got to do with the fact that they needed a minimum of two Pygmy Puffs for anything to happen.

He was scribbling down notes from the board when he nearly fell off his low seat at the sudden shrieking squeak next to him. He stared at the Gryffindor Prefect-- no, she couldnt possibly be making that sound, but whatever it was came really close to her. He leaned to his side, angling his head until he could see the bouncy Pygmy Puff in her hands. It sure looked bright, but the sound good grief "I guess.... your Pygmy Puff is male?"

Then he felt something digging into the front of his robes. He glanced down in time to see Hendrix' shivering purple furball trying to push down his vest. Hurriedly he fished the puff out and tried cradling it in his hands. Hendrix was jittery, and made many attempts to return into the safe folds of the Ravenclaw's robes. "Uh... I could guess that my Pygmy Puff is female." he said, noting the darker shade on the Puff's fur compared to the other puffs in class. And although silent for now she seemed to have been frightened by the sudden squeaking coming from coral pink furball.

Oh wait... there was another question posed by the Professor wasnt there? "Uh Professor, since Pygmy Puffs are minature Puffskeins, would it be safe to assume that they would also share the same diet? Puffskeins are not picky eaters and would eat just about anything, including uh... nasal mucus." Yeah try not to disgust half the class with something so unhygienic.

Minerva was sitting listening to the students when the puffs began to make noises. Why were they all making so much noise. She looked down at the one on her lap that seemed to be sleeping, because it wasn't making any noise. "Your a good little puff." she pet it and looked around. She looked down at her parchment getting ready for when they talked about the magic power part of the research.

Devina Wellheart 02-17-2012 03:44 PM

Justin didn't have a puff and was glad of that. All the other little puff's were going berzek. Then he looked over at the quiet one sitting on Minerva's lap. Boy, did she luck out with the only quiet puff in the room he thought. Still he sat patiently waiting for further instruction.

In between short blasts of pain, she noticed the Slytherin glaring at her puff as if to tell it not to act up like Honey was. Trying to prise it away from her hair, she sighed loudly before trying to get it away from her hair. Painful task, getting pygmypuff hands off her hair.

Sierra, it was a nice name... And Elise couldn't believe that they've worked together the whole time and hadn't asked for each other's names. "Second year Ravenclaw," she smiled back. She wouldn't mind the two of them being friends, but she wasn't the type to force someone else into doing it.

Another yank on her hair was it. "Stop it," she snapped, finally at the end of her patience. "Or I'll actually strangle you." Looking at Sierra, she nodded, seeing as she had a point. Why hadn't El thought of that?

"I'll give you this tomato if you get off my head,"
she tried, holding up the redness. No luck. The puff just stuck its tongue out and grabbed the tomato out of her hand, remaining perched on her head. Turning her gaze to her partner, she sighed. "Help?" she asked, a little tiredly with a yelp as the puff pulled on her hair again.

Her hands would have probably choked the puff had the Professor not been walking around the class. She didn't need a detention.

Well well, looked like the Hufflepuffs were good at using the scientific method to discover things!

"

"Very, very good, Alyssa." Williamson nodded at their list, please with it of course. He found it funny how neither of them had any nose boogers on them at the moment. "You'll have a homework assignment that allows you to explore this further, but good job for now."

"Very good!" It seemed a lot of the class was getting the same results, at least as far as bread and meat was concerned. Though William was still wondering where they had gotten all the food from... he sure didn't keep chicken out here. Only live chickens in the barnyard, child please.

Whoa whoa whoaaaaa. What in Merlin's beard was going on here? "It's not mating season," Williamson announced loudly, giving Kurumi's pygmy puff a stern glance. Anyway, weren't they supposed to hum at a pitch too high for humans to detect? This one's squeaking was definitely detectable, the little playa.

She does like my chocolate truffle though. She finished the whole piece I gave her." Tayla realized she had been referring to her pygmy puff as female, and though the squeak of her pygmy puff was high-pitched, Tayla wasn't completely sure about Teacup's gender yet.

Tayla turned her head towards the loud squeaking sound. It was coming from Kurumi's pygmy puff. A moment later, Teacup was squeaking, too. "SQUUEEEEK! SUEEEEEEEEEEK!" Not as loudly as Kurumi's but definitely higher in pitch. "Definitely female..." Tayla thought. She watched as Teacup gave one final squeak, it's eyes looking straight at Kurumi's pygmy puff. "Er...Professor? What's going on?"

Yeah. "I've noticed that too," William continued with class, ignoring the squeaky male puff. Sometimes if you just ignore the undesired behavior, it will go away on his own. That was the theory he was working with anyway. "Pymgy puffs obviously have well-developed taste pallets." Who would choose an owl pellet over chocolate, you know?

As for the squeaking.... "Just ignore that," the professor stated loudly, again with another glare at the squeakers. "It's just puffs getting excited about the other gender. No big deal." Nothing to see here. Move along, move along.

Oh, Merlin!

Well that did explain some --- or a lot --- about why the girl had vegetables in her purse. Still.....

"Yes, pymgy puffs are vegetarian in a way, good....." As for the hair thing.... Robbie tilted his head. "Is your pygmy female? The puffs tend to nest when mating --- ALTHOUGH IT IS NOT MATING SEASON RIGHT NOW," he had to keep repeating that for some reason, "so yours MIGHT be wanting to make a nest."

Again, now was NOT THE TIME for humming, folks and puffs. Why were all of his students searching for their.... organs now??! MERLIN THIS CLASS WAS GETTING WEIRD.

"Professor-uh are they squeaking cause they're like...I don't know attracted to another pygmy puff in the room or something?!" Was it mating season or were the pygmy puffs just starting a mutiny or something? She returned her gaze to Barnabus and whispered. "Don't try anything funny."

"Yes, yes Ella, that would be why," Williamson sighed in exasperation. "Try to get them to quiet down, if you can?" Everyone????!

Puffskeins are not picky eaters and would eat just about anything, including uh... nasal mucus." Yeah try not to disgust half the class with something so unhygienic.

"Yes, very good, Vickers." William nodded. "They're scavengers, they sure are."

Now then, it was DEFINITELY beyond time to move on. "OKAY," William raised his voice again in a last ditch effort to gain the class' attention. "Let's have another group share their results. Anyone. The situation was becoming quite humorous as the squeaking pygmy puffs were causing quite the ruckus and Professor Williamson was trying his best to get things back under control. Maybe Ella hadn't been too far fetched in thinking a mutiny was on the rise. She looked down at Barnabus, happy he had decided to suppress any urge to join in on the mating call or rally cry-whichever the others were doing at the moment. She patted the little guy gently, thinking he had made a good judgment call. "I'm proud of you Barny. No need to act all wild in class-save that stuff for pygmy puff social gatherings." Where did pygmy puffs go to socialize anyways?

Bazinga 02-19-2012 06:56 PM

Minerva put up her hand. "Professor Justin and I were doing research on if the pygmy puff has magical powers or not. We first looked into the animals that it might be similar to and figured out whether or not it had some powers the other creatures do. Once we determined that it did not, we talked about other ways we could try and figure it out. We thought about seeing about it's intelligence and communication skills with us, maybe placing things next to it to see if it might use some powers to get the objects away from it, and then we looked into the puffskeins to see if they have any magical powers. We noticed that they do not, so we are guessing that the Pygmy puff's probably have none as well, but did not get any further in figuring it out at this point in time."

"I'll give you this tomato if you get off my head," she tried, holding up the redness.

Sierra looked over at her partner with wide eyes. "Wait--you want me to touch it?" she asked. Eww. She hated creatures. Why couldn't she just yell at it or throw a quill at it and scare the thing away? Oh. Right. A little thing called house points

"Oh, well...fine then," she said and began reaching for the Pygmy Puff. Just before she grabbed it, though...

Keefer had to admit, this was probably the strangest Care of Magical Creatures class he could remember being at in several terms. What with all the squeaking and gender identifying, he was starting to feel a bit awkward. So, when Williamson called for owners of rogue puffs to step outside, he was grateful. He breathed a sigh of relief and began scribbling down the notes on diet that had appeared.

Selena blinked at the professor blankly. What type of pygmy puff knew what his carbohydrate intake was? Selena didn't even know what her carbohydrate intake was. The professor was obviously making stuff up. And COPYING Selena by putting the pygmy puff on his head. Hmph. It was so Selena's thing and Kent being on her head right now was PROOF.

But back to the pygmy puff discussion. Selena liked pygmy puffs. Could she volunteer that?

Selena pet the pygmy puff on her head as she waited for COOL stuff to happen. Other than squeaky pygmy puffs. See. Kent didn't SQUEAK. He was very well behaved.

As Alyssa waited patiently for the other students to present their findings, she started feeling a sneeze coming on. She tried to hold it in. First she squeezed her nose, and that stopped the feeling for awhile, but then it came back again. Then she rubbed her nose trying to stop the tickling sensation and was glad when the sneezing sensation went away. She smiled her relief and turned back to listen to what the others had to say.

"AAAACCHHHHHOOOOO!!!"Alyssa let out a loose sneeze. She managed to cover her mouth before she sprayed everyone, but nose snot flew out of her nose and landed on her jacket sleeve. Before she could grab a tissue to wipe it off, Nerfball's tongue flew out and swallowed it whole. "Yech...Nerfball!! You're digusting!!"Alyssa told her Pygmy Puff. Alyssa raised her hand."Uh Professor, I can now safely say that without a doubt, Pygmy Puffs love to eat nose snot too." Alyssa told the Professor while checking that off on her list.

Turning to Sierra, she nodded, opening the zip lock and passing a leaf of lettuce. If this got the puffer out of her hair, she'd be beyond happy! Sheesh! Paying attention to WWW just in time to hear him start explaining why her annoying ball of fluff wouldn't leave her head, she groaned.

"I think so..."
she shrugged. It had a really long tongue, and wasn't as brightly colored as the others... I think... "Haven't seen it since it hopped onto my hair..."

Trying to pry the claws off her hair, she managed to catch sight of the puff sticking its tongue out at her mockingly. Hurtful.

As she reached for the lettuce being passed to her, Sierra hesitated just a bit. What she really wanted to do was grab the Pygmy Puff and remove him from Elise's hair by force. Coaxing this creature out with a treat was just not her style. Sierra even thought about her own method for a moment, considering it greatly, but eventually grabbed a hold of the lettuce.

"If things bites me or starts eating snot, I give up," she said, making a slight face. A Pygmy Puff was so not worth this kind of trouble, and the way Sierra saw it, it wasn't her hair being pulled. She'd been asked to do a demonstration, though... Argh! "Okay, here goes..."

She edged the lettuce closer and closer to the creature's mouth. Or where she thought the mouth might be. All she could see was a puffball of fur. She got the lettuce close then pulled away, trying to give the creature the idea that it wasn't just going to be handed this treat. It had to come and get it!

Oooh, research on the powers of pygmy puffs! Now this should be interesting. William's ears perked up and he leaned forward a bit, Nerf doing a careful balancing thing on his head as he listened to Minerva's and Justin's results.

"Hmm, you did a great job with that, so far, especially since it is a difficult question." He nodded and Nerf let out a squeak as he bounced on the tall man's head. "Good job though! He pulled Nerf down from his head and raised a brow at the two girls testing out the vegetables on their pygmy puffs. That one was awfully attached to the girl's hair for some reason... weird. Williamson had never seen one do that before.

"Let us know when---" oh, they were starting! William cleared his throat and adopted a tone similar to a National Geographic narrator. "Class, let's all quietly watch as Sierra Greingoth attempts to coax a nesting pygmy puff off the head of her classmate, Elise Fairfield. Watch as the young Slytherin waves a leaf of lettuce near the pygmy puff's suspected mouth, but not close enough that the creature could just snatch it out of her hand. Will it take the bait?"

He grinned at the class and added, "Last call for any other results! Pass in your parchments and then we'll re-arrange this barn a bit for the activities portion of class!"

He was really looking forward to that bit. Heh.

FireboltAvis88 02-21-2012 06:25 AM

Alyssa quickly wiped her nose to make sure that no other Pygmy Puff would be pouncing on her, than with the agreement of Taylor, she handed in her parchment to the Professor before waiting for instructions from him on how he wanted them to rearrange the barn. 'Class is not over yet? There's going to be more activities? Cool,'Alyssa thought to herself.

Will it take the bait?".

Elise glanced at Sierra nervously before letting go of the lettuce. Could that one leaf actually persuade the puffball to leave her hair? What she really wanted to know was what made the stupid ball of fluff want to stay in her hair so badly that it wouldn't let go? It had months of winter left till its mating season, anyway!

Nodding stiffly, she winced in pain as it yanked on her head yet again. OUCH! Just as Sierra started inching the lettuce towards her hair, WWW decided to narrate her disaster to the whole class. Joy. Now this'd be a classwide dilemma. Shooting a deathly glare at him for just a second, she turned her gaze back to the lettuce. Inching closer and closer towards the pygmy puff and... She jerked it away. Then moved it close again. Sierra sure was smart.

Honey the Pygmy Puff was perfectly content to stay in its nest. Look, the next matched her fluff-fur perfectly. See, you other lame pygmies? I git the best nest here! Oooooh! Look, that human with the black nest on her head was giving her food too! Best day ever! Eyeing the food as it inched towards her, she narrowed her eyes slightly as it was jerked away. Oh, look. It's back. Super long tongue even for a female pygmy puff moving outwards, it wrapped itself around the top half of the leaf, snapped it and pulled it back in. Yummy. Do you perhaps have more, human girl?

SQUEAK!

Ella smiled as Professor Williamson began to talk in his serious scientific voice, calling attention to the erm-nesting that was happening. She watched, thankful that Barny wasn't trying to nest in her hair! Especially since Ella's hair was long and thick and once Barnabus was in there-well, he'd never get out! It also looked quite painful and Ella felt sorry for the girl who was being yanked. She looked at the little creature in her lap again and in a serious tone said, "Alright Barny, now I know I said no funny stuff but I should have been more specific. Funny stuff includes nesting in my hair! Okay? Sorted." She nodded athoratatively at the little guy and then patted his head for good measure. She was becoming quite fond of him after all.

She returned her attention to the Professor as he was telling the class to pass in their parchment. She assmebled her notes and passed them along, excited to get to do another activity before class ended.

He grinned at the class and added, "Last call for any other results! Pass in your parchments and then we'll re-arrange this barn a bit for the activities portion of class!"

He was really looking forward to that bit. Heh.[/color]

Annabelle heard the professor's directions and handed in her parchement to the professor. She was excited to the activity part of the class! She waited for more directions.
