Professor Williamson finished putting the last little spell on the enclosure containing more than a dozen happy, humming pygmy puffs of every color before stalking over to the doors of the barn. He threw them open with a grin, shivered a bit as the nippy air started to filter in, and then moved back inside where it was warm.
The man took a seat on one of the bales of hay scattered in a semi-circle near the pygmy puff enclosure and nodded to the students who were filtering in. "If you have a pygmy puff, feel free to pick out your own hay bale and create a name card for you and your puff. If you don't have a pet puff already, grab one out of that corral over there and settle down. Feel free to name it, make a name card, pet it, get to to know it, all that."
He picked up his own pygmy puff for the day, a lime green one named Nerf, and started petting it til it purred. Hehehee. Hopefully the class would enjoy this low-key lesson a bit more than the ah, last eventful one.
Oh yes, and he named a name card for himself too! Williamson flicked his wand at the stack of scrap parchments in the corner and caused one to decorate itself for him and Nerf.

He placed Batman back on his shoulder and pointed to the collection of Pygmy Puffs Williamson had that the other students hadn't picked out. Poor guys.
We might have a better chance at finding a gender difference with all of them.
Gideon watched as Oakey stood up and gave a short little speech about what they had found or didn't find. However he wasn't sure the professor was up to them yet since they didn't get a response so he returned his attention to his partner. "Sounds like a plan," he said glancing over at the pen when it was mentioned. A larger group would allow for better results indeed.
Seeing the younger boy handle his pygmy puff, the 5th year tentatively raised Doyle up to his shoulder to see if he would take the perch as well. It certainly moved from his hand after a while, seeming to enjoy snuggling into his scarf that he had added when they would be out in the chilly weather.
That worked as well.
With his own borrowed creature securly on his person, Gideon bent down beside the small corral ready to look over the remaining unclaimed ones. Though as his gaze passed over them much as he had when chosing the pygmy puff on his shouler, he couldn't really tell any outward clue.
Tayla was grateful this girl seemed friendly than most other Slytherins she had met. She returned the smile. "Let's start then. We need to choose a question...I like the third one. But which would you like to work on?"
Tayla showed Butterfly the list and waited for the young Slytherin to pick one.
Tayla looked around for the professor. She realized they needed to work fast before it was their turn to recite.
She looked at the list,"How about this one." She pointed at '(3) why are they so adorable???' on the list.

"I'm serious! It's right here in the book!" He looked back down and cleared his throat. "From time to time a very long, thin, pink tongue will emerge from the depths of the Puffskein and snake through the house searching for food. The Puffskein is a scavenger that will eat anything from leftovers to spiders, but it has a particular preference for sticking its tongue up the nose of sleeping wizards and eating their bogies," he finished, chuckling a bit. The horrified look on Ella's face was somehow gratifying.

Minerva looked at Justin. Have you found anything about the puffskeins in the book? I am beginning to think they don't have any magical powers, unless their power is way to cuteness." As Minerva looked up she noticed Laura alone. She looked at Justin it was there duty as second years to make sure the first years were learning the best they could, right? Well she remembered the conversation she had with Professor Hadley. "Justin do you mind if I ask Laura to work with us? I feel bad she doesn't have a partner." Then not wanting to get into any trouble for having three in a group she put up her hand. "Professor is it ok if we have three in our group?" Then she turned to Laura. "If it's ok to have three in a group would you want to work with us Laura?" She knew Laura had a shaky start at the beginning of term, but she was trying now and Minerva wanted to help her to her potential.
Justin smiloed and said, " Of course she's welcome to join us. As long as the Professor doesn't mind. But I've been doing some reading and it looks like they haven't any magical powers. In fact they are just a miniature version of a Puffskein. That's it other than it purring when it's happy and being a good pet. " He said as he showed her in his book where he found the information.

"Erm, maybe?" Tristan was no creature expert. He wasn't even sure what regular puffskeins ate. "We could always try to feed fruit to one of them," he suggested. It sounded like one of the other groups had already said that their's had eaten a tuna sandwich, further supporting his hypothesis that the pygmies were omnivores.

The Luna Lovegood thing may have proven to be right, but they weren't gonna go with it because she usually believed in crackpot theories. "Yeah, exactly. Maybe they and Puffskeins are only magical in the sense that we keep them. I can't really see them doing magic. I can't even find anything about that in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them." But it would still not hurt to think of some more things.

Looking up she smiled at the girl, "Sure. I'll be your partner." She scooted over so that she could sit with her. "I'm Jezz."

Angelina smiled wide and clapped her hands jumping up and down a bit. "Yay!" she finaly had a partner, no more having to going looking around worried to find one.
He was okay with this partner thing then? Ness gave him a small grin and then her face turned confused. What was he doing with he's tag. She raised a brow and then looked at he's tag that he seemed to have pushed a little closer to her. Whatever this boy was doing..she could now at least see he's name without having to ask. So Lewis it was right? She bit her lip and just to make sure he knew her name to she did the same.
All good..or maybe not, as Ness looked at Lewis' name tag again she noticed that there was a question mark by where the pygmy puffs name was supposed to be written. Her lips formed a pout as she wondered whether to question him about the name or not. She'd leave it...for now at least.
Now how to answer the question "Well..um..my pygmy puff, Puffles here is a boy, but I don't really know how to tell the difference." She was lucky the shop owner knew how to tell between male and female..otherwise her pygmy puff could have been a female for all she knew. "What I can tell you though, is that Puffles seems to be lazy at times, and then all of a sudden he has he's energetic, crazy moments. He's quite odd." Puffles was now in he's lazy phase, it was quite obvious, and it was a good thing he was sleeping too, because he tended to get offended easily and he bit people when that happened."He's also agressive at times too...sometimes I think he acts like a girl." Maybe Lewis had a better answer? "What would you say?" she asked raising her brow seriously.
This gender thing was just too confusing.
Lewis watched her out of the corner of his eyes as her face turned from seemingly happy to confused. Erm. Had he done something wrong? Did she not get his hint with the tag thing? There, it said his name right there. Or did she actually want him to introduce himself. As in like use actual words? Hopefully that wasn't the case.
Oh she was a clever one, seeing as she too had now turned her tag in a way so that he could read it. Renesmee. Good, now that they knew each other's names, they could finally get started, right? Oh, no apparently not. Now she was...pouting? Lewis usually ignored things like that unless the reason was really really obvious to him and he thought that he could help in some way. In this case he didn't but seeing as they were partners now he figured he'd have to ask. "You okay?" There now at least she would think he cared.
Lewis glanced back at Renesmee's Pygmy Puff when she mentioned him before returning his gaze back to the piece of parchment in front of him. Nodding slowly at her words, he then proceeded to make a list of the characteristics she had mentioned like lazy, crazy, energetic, aggressive. At her last bit he stopped writing and looked up at her again, a rather weird look on his face. "He acts like a girl?!" Okay, this was very much not helping. He couldn't exactly put this down as a typical characterstic of male Pygmy Puffs.
And then she was asking him. "Well, I guess we could just put your Pygmy Puff somewhere with a couple of other Pygmy Puffs and wait for mating season." WAS there something like a mating season for them? "Then the ones he's trying to...err...reproduce with are the female ones." At least, assuming that the Pygmy Puffs themselves knew the difference. "I...guess they don't have any obvious, like, physical differences, right?" No, that would be too easy. Hang on. "Or, have you noticed anything with yours?" He asked the other Hufflepuff seriously with his eyebrows slightly raised.

Alyssa took out a muggle pencil from her backpack and broke it in half and then in quarters. She fed the smallest bit of the pencil to Nerfball. It first sniffed at it as she held it in her hand. Then it sniffed some more before it's tongue slid out and grabbed it pulling it into it's mouth. Alyssa waited as it started to chew but within seconds, it stuck out it's tongue and spat out the pencil. "Scratch the pencil, Taylor. He didn't like it. Okay now for my shoelace."Alyssa informed Taylor.
Alyssa bent down and removed one of her shoelaces and dangled it in front of Nerball. He/she sniffed at it, then looked at Alyssa, like it was saying 'are you crazy?' before looking away. Alyssa laughed as she replaced her shoelace. "We can definitely scratch of shoelaces. Nerfball actually looked offended when I tried to feed him that." she continued to laugh as she reported back to Taylor.
Taylor giggled as she watched Alyssa try to feed Nerfball a pencil and a shoelace. She wanted to try something crazy so she plucked a hair out and dangled it in front of Mercy. She figured that Mercy wouldn't try to eat it, but you never know. She wiggled it around some and Mercy just ignored it and walked away. Taylor looked up, "Hair is a no, like i figured." She smiled and chuckled. "What else should we try?" Tay scooped up her pygmy puff and sat down.

How did Kennedy name his pygmy puff without knowing what gender it was? "Why don't we just ask the pygmy puff if it's a boy or girl?" Selena asked.
Because that was the obvious way. And she was sure Professor Long Name with a W didn't mind them going on about pygmy puffs. Because pygmy puffs were cool. "Maaayyyybeeeeeee... Kent is a guy becaaauuuusssseeeeee...." Selena stared at the pygmy puff on Kennedy then plucked Kent off of her head to observe him. "He's fluffier."
Yup. Fluffier. Totally the reason why he was a male and Violet wasn't.
Kennedy felt the Pygmy puff that was now on his lap shrink toward him when Selena greeted it. "I...think it's shy," he said, supressing a chuckle. Apparently this little thing was a bit introverted compared to Selena's outgoing personality.
He raised an eyebrow. Pygmy puffs couldn't possibly talk so how would they know? He looked down at Violet and asked, "Are you a boy or girl?" They puff just stared at him like if he'd gone bonkers. Kennedy looked up at Selena and tilted his head to the side. What was that supposed to mean?
"Well...he does look bigger than Violet," he said. "Maybe their squeaks are different too? Make his squeak, Selena," he said. Maybe like with humans boys had deeper squeaks or something?

"Heeeeey Kent, you're a guy right? Just shiver if it's a yes," Selena said, beaming at the purple ball in her hand. Kent just blinked back at her with his blue eyes before giving Selena a slight tremor. HAH. "HE'S A DUDE."
Obviously. Because the pygmy puff SAID so... basically.
Bigger? No. "He's fluffier," Selena sighed. Not bigger. FLUFF.IE.ER. Squeaks are different? How did he expect Selena to replicate a pygmy puff squeak?! Oh wait. He wanted KENT to squeak. Right. "Alright, Kent, squeak, okay?" Selena said, waiting for her puff to squeak.
