Professor Williamson finished putting the last little spell on the enclosure containing more than a dozen happy, humming pygmy puffs of every color before stalking over to the doors of the barn. He threw them open with a grin, shivered a bit as the nippy air started to filter in, and then moved back inside where it was warm.
The man took a seat on one of the bales of hay scattered in a semi-circle near the pygmy puff enclosure and nodded to the students who were filtering in. "If you have a pygmy puff, feel free to pick out your own hay bale and create a name card for you and your puff. If you don't have a pet puff already, grab one out of that corral over there and settle down. Feel free to name it, make a name card, pet it, get to to know it, all that."
He picked up his own pygmy puff for the day, a lime green one named Nerf, and started petting it til it purred. Hehehee. Hopefully the class would enjoy this low-key lesson a bit more than the ah, last eventful one.
Oh yes, and he named a name card for himself too! Williamson flicked his wand at the stack of scrap parchments in the corner and caused one to decorate itself for him and Nerf.

"This is Sutherland. I just met him at the beginning of class."
He wasn't sure what the girl would want to talk about, but he had brought up the question about the naming, so he figured they may as well start there. "Erm, d'you want to start with the whole naming thing? That's what I want to know. But there's other things that sound interesting as well."
Unsure if he should continue to carry the conversation, he just plowed ahead. "Apparently these little creatures are bred from Puffskeins? I think those are usually a bit bigger. So maybe the pygmy part is meant to refer to their small size. What do you think?" he asked politely, still smiling encouragingly at her.
Ella returned Keefer's smile rather nervously. She thought of him as quite the celebrity in their house, especially since he was the quidditch captain. "Hi, I'm Ella, nice to finally meet you." she said shyly. She looked at the little orange puff he put on his lap and giggled. It was quite cute. "Hello there, Sutherland!" she said, patting its head. Ella held out her little puffy yellow friend towards Keefer's with a small smile. "This is Barnabus. I just met him at the start of class as well...well I'm assuming its a him. Who knows for sure." she said, shrugging.
Ella nodded when Keefer suggested a subject to discuss. She didn't really know anything about pygmy puffs so she figured that was as good as any topic to start with. "I think that's a great idea." she said brightly. Happy that he decided to carry on the conversation, Ella listened with a smile. As he talked about the Puffskeins, Ella became quite curious. "What's a Puffskein?" She had never heard of it but was able to add some comment about the pygmy point. "Oh yeah, pygmys are those little people right? Well it makes sense then that these puffs are called pygmys because they are small as well. Probably they average much smaller than most magical creatures just like pygmys average smaller than other cultural groups." Ella finished her sentence with a sigh, having talked quite quickly because she was nervous. It wasn't easy being partners with an older boy, let alone the quidditch captain!

How foolish! He took his left hand from his side and stuck it out for Gideon to shake.
Do you have any specific question you want to figure out? He asked Gideon. I was thinking maybe how to figure out their genders.
"Nice to officially met you then Oakey," he said with a nod accepting the offered hand and giving it a polite shake before letting it go. The 5th year thought for a moment on the aspect of a question to answer before shaking his head. He hadn't any better clue on that as he had of pygmy puffs in the first place. "Hey, Barnabus! Or perhaps Baranabus-ina?" A poor attempt at feminizing the name. "Well, however you would make that a girl name if it's a girl," he said, laughing at himself.
In response to her Puffskein question, he pulled out his copy of Fantastic Beasts and began to read some sections. "A long-tongued custard-coloured little furball that makes a calming purring noise. Annddd..ooooh! Tristan! Evelyn spotted him standing nearby. She was glad to see him..even if he weirded her out a little. "Hey Tristan." She grinned. "Want to work together?"
Oh there she was! Good. That meant he wouldn't have to attempt to make any new friends... aha right, well they'd better get started then. "Sure," Tristan replied at something above a mumble. He did seem to be better at speaking up.
With Aristotle on his shoulder, Tristan once more took a seat to begin their thinking. "What do you think pygmy puffs eat?" he asked. They appeared to be somewhat vegetarian, though perhaps they were onnivores? They could always just attempt to feed the animals a bunch of stuff. It seemed likely that they shared eating habits with puffskeins.
Alyssa started working on the feeding list. As she wrote, she smiled thinking of the various possibilities that the Pygmy Puff could eat. She wrote down their options in her journal.
Text Cut: Pygmy Puff feeding list
1. Cookies
2. Leftover tuna sandwich
3. ants
4. lettuce
5. carrots
6. apples
7. chocolate frogs
8. nose boogers
9. spiders
10.
"Want to add or take anything off the list, Taylor?" Alyssa asked her partner.
Taylor took the list and read through each of them carefully. She wrinkled up her nose at number 8 on the list but resisted saying that they should take that one off. Tay thought about it for a while and finally said, "What about grass, or maybe leaves?" She looked around her, "Or hay....." A rat ran across the barn floor and Taylor held back a scream, "Or maybe.... as disgusting as it is........rats?"

Why don't you figure out what you want to feed your puff while I feed Netfball something off our list. Then we can either add what we fed our puffs and whether they liked it or scratch it off if they don't."Alyssa suggested to Taylor.
While she let Taylor decide what she wanted to test feed her Pygmy Puff with, Alyssa looked at the list and then checked her pockets to see what she had. She made a face of disgust when she felt something wet inside her pocket. She pulled it out and discovered that it was a quarter of her tuna sandwich. "Yuck what is this doing in my pocket? Oh well here goes."
Alyssa broke off a very small piece of the sandwich and fed it to Nerfball. It sniffed at it for a couple of seconds before its long tongue flew out, grabbed the piece and it swallowed it whole. "Okay. I guess that's a yes to leftover tuna sandwich"

Williamson smiled to see the barn humming with the activity with all of the students working creatively and cooperatively. He stood up and removed Nerf from his shoulder, moving around the semicircle of hay to collect all the nametags. They would serve as a nice form attendance.
Once that was done, he moved around between groups, listening in on their planning and plotting. Looked good so far, but perhaps it was time to move the lesson along? He returned to the center of the circle and clapped his hands together loosely, magnifying his voice with his wand.
"ALL RIGHT, everyone, let's reconvene here on the hay, sitting next to your partner and your puff. Why don't we go around and have one person from each group say who you worked with and what you came up with. We'll explore the best ideas or most popular questions in today's lesson, as well as do a few fun pygmy puff-owner activities."
He nodded and looked to the first student group for answers.

Kurumi nodded as Vickers went on about how perhaps Dumbledore had pulled a few strings behind the scenes to take the blame off of Hagrid, therefore making him unpenalized. "You might be right, but not even Dumbledore was above the law...at least not back in those days, surely he would have had a firm talking to about those being in the school," she said as she scratched her chin a bit. "On the other hand, perhaps they were able to pass off Hagrid breeding those creatures because he used one in the Triwizard Tournament. So...Dumbledore could have passed that off as his intent to breed them was for that purpose."
As Vickers went on a bit more, Kurumi's eyes remained on the words Experimental Banning...more specifically on the word experimental in the textbook. But her thoughts were momentarily distracted when Vickers brought up a good point. "Hmm, that could very well be," she nodded. "Hybrid creatures certainly seemed to fall under that category, as is the case with Blast-Ended Skrewts. At least, if my theory about intent is true, that you can't breed without reason?[/b]" The magical world did seem to revolve entirely around the concept of intent after all. "Puffskeins only have a Ministry rating of XX, so breeding them would be about the same as breeding a kneazle. I would assume that is miniatures were allowed that Ministry ratings would still have a heavy hand in what could be breed and what couldn't... somehow I don't think claiming to be breeding a minature Ukrainian Ironbelly would go over well. Or a manticore for that matter." Still, there was something to be said about this point.
Now Kurumi's eyes were back on the word...Experimental. "What if...one could claim that they were actually experimenting?" Kurumi asked, sort of more voicing her thoughts more than actually asking Vickers his opinion - although he was more than willing to chime in. Because, if one wasn't really experimenting and actually KNEW what they were doing, wasn't that sort of a loophole? Perhaps being too picky?
Vickers nodded his head thoughtfully at Kurumi's reply "Good point. The Tournament could've been the primary reason for coming up with these exotic creatures, after all they had dragons specially brought in. I could imagine Headmaster Dumbledore having to get clearances for that. Imagine the paperwork that went through in the Ministry." he laughed then after a beat added "But I cant shake the feeling that Groundskeeper Hagrid was just incredibly fortunate that when he had a disastrous breeding incident the Tri-Wizard Tournament was there to.... not cover it up, but at least make best with an incident that could've been really bad for Hogwarts. Impecable timing as it were." he added smirking.
Boy would he wouldve wanted to be half as lucky as Hagrid.
Then Professor Williamson spoke and had them move towards the hay. He glanced at Kurumi and angled his head for them to find a spot there, then carried Hendrix towards their new seats.

Kurumi nodded and couldn't help but giggle. Giving the bits she had read in Hogwarts, a History about the former Groundkeeeper...the Ravenclaw was probably closer to the truth. Still, Kurumi was going to give the man, erm, half-giant the benefit of the doubt for the time being. It also gave them some guidelines for the law in question.

Then Professor Williamson moved the lesson along and Kurumi followed Vickers to the hay and took a seat, patting Momotaro II before turning her attention to the Care of Magical Creature's professor. Share? Kurumi's gaze immediately went to Vickers, seeing as he had brought up what was probably their best argument about the breeding process, but his face was indicating to her that this one was on her. So, smiling at her partner, Kurumi raised her left hand, once again to avoid disturbing the pygmy puff on her right shoulder, and waited until it was her turn.
"Professor, Vickers and I discussed the issue of whether pygmy puffs are an exception to the Ban on Experimental Breeding. There are other cases of magical creatures being created and having no punishment, such as Blast-Ended Skrewts, so we tried to reason what may have happened." She paused to take a breath, there really was no point in going into the Blast-Ended Skrewts since the subject matter was pygmy puffs at the moment. "A few things that came to mind were the fact that pygmy puffs are not technically a new species, but are only miniature versions of an existing creature - Puffskeins - creating a new breed and not new species." A rather nice little loophole there. "Also, Puffskeins only have a Ministry rating of XX, which means that they are harmless and may be domesticated. The ban Scamander wrote seems to be written in such a way to prevent witches and wizards from crossbreeding species that could result in a creature thats unpredictable or impossible to control, but Puffskeins do not pose this threat."
Kurumi lowered her hand now and glanced at Vickers. Hopefully that had been an acceptable summary of their discussion, taking out the details that were not directly related to pygmy puffs.
"Assuming that these things are considered in the review process, it would seem that pygmy puffs fall under a different category and the ban does not apply to them."

Sierra looked up, a seemingly innocent expression on her face. It was an expression similar to a 'calmness before the storm'. She only appeared innocent now, but the workings of something slightly evil were likely brewing in her mind.

Oakey was glad the Gideon was just as much into this investigation as he was. Hmmmm, maybe if we compared them to....
Oakey would have finished his sentence but was cut off when Williamson spoke up once more and told the class to gather round and stick with their group.
When it came time for the Oakey/Gideon team to speak Oakey looked to the Gryffindor who stayed quiet. I guess it was my idea to figure out the genders of these things. Oakey thought to himself. Professor, Gideon and I thought we'd try and find out how to tell what genders they were. Now for the disappointment. But we couldn't figure it out between our two Pgymy Puffs. If we studied more than just the two little guys or girls, what ever they are. We might be able to figure out some gender difference.

Keefer looked over at Ella. He doubted that she would be brave enough to speak up, so he decided he would. He raised both hands. "Professor, I'm Keefer Marius and this is Ella.. I never caught her last name, actually!" He should've thought about that before he spoke up. Oh well. "We decided to talk about where the pygmy puff got that pygmy part of its name."
"We started from the fact that these creatures are bred from Puffskeins. Those are usually bigger than the pygmy puffs we see here, though that is not conclusive scientific evidence as you asked for." Although, they must have at least thirty different specimens here, so it was likely a valid conclusion.
"So we think the pygmy part is meant to refer to their small size. We support this hypothesis with the additional fact that the word 'pygmy' also refers to little people. It makes sense, then, that these puffs are called pygmies because they are small as well. Probably they average much smaller than most Puffskeins and other magical creatures, just like pygmies average smaller than other cultural groups."
Had they been scientific enough? Who knew. But at least he had tried to present their discussion as such.

She listened carefully as Keefer read from his book about Puffskeins, even taking some notes so she would have the information in case she ever needed it again. "Ick! No they don't! Is that real life?" She asked, wide eyed.
Ella was about to talk about the next question she was curious about-food-when she head the Professor address the group.

Reason: Timeline!
Selena was looking around for someone who was going to be her partner, which was kinda hard when you were short but she managed. Only because she heard him first before she saw him. Then he walked over. It was Young Grasshopper! Selena could work with him! She was sure he was PLENTY smart and knew about the scientificalation process of figure thingys out.
"HAAAAAAAAIIII Kennedy!!!" Selena exclaimed, beaming at him. And his pygmy puff. "You know Kent!" Selena said, pointing to the ball of fluff on her head. "And who's thiiiiis?" Selena asked, poking the pygmy puff on his shoulder. Hehe... fluffy.
Then more importantly... though... maybe not more important... "What will we be working on?"
"Hey, Kent," Kennedy said, attempting to pet the little guy. He didn't want to get bitten, or worse, get licked by it. It ate snot. "This is...um, Violet." he said. Although, he wasn't sure what gender it was.
He chuckled when the Pygmy puff tried hiding on his neck. "I'm not sure what gender it is, want to find out?" And NOT by finding its...yeah. Maybe comparing Kent and Violet. There had to be differences between male and female pygmy puffs, right?
He examined both puffs and came to a small conclusion. "Violet is smaller than Kent," he said, observing both creatures. "And violet has traces of eyelashes. Maybe a female trait?" he said, looking at Selena.
Kennedy turned his attention away from the puffs when professor Williamson began speaking...
Zhenya looked up and saw Ira, a girl she had seen a bit, around. "Hi Ira! Of course we can be partners, that would be great!" she said. Now what was the first thing to do?
"A list?" she asked, was that what they did? Finding answers...
Ira smiled as Zhenya agreed to be partners. Now what to do?
She said, "Um.. I'm really not sure as to what we are actually supposed to do? Find answers to the questions written on the board, perhaps?" But then for that, they would need to use the library, right? So what did they have to do exactly?
She recalled the instructions again and saw the list she had written down. "Fine, lets choose a question and try to answer it.. You choose!" Ira said to Zhenya, while petting her own pygmy puff Viola.
"See these are the list of questions.."

Amelia's eyes widened as Professor Williamson was already asking them to share what they had come up with. He was moving too fast. She hadn't even gotten to work properly with her partner yet because she had only managed to give him her question idea. She felt bad now but she stayed silent because she really had nothing to say.
you can keep working with your partners but I'm going to respond to those who answer.

She paused to take a breath, there really was no point in going into the Blast-Ended Skrewts since the subject matter was pygmy puffs at the moment.
Williamson nodded as Kurumi spoke. "Excellent. I like how you referred to other creatures we know the history of when trying to learn about the pygmies. I would say that Fred and George Weasley likely created pygmy puffs without knowledge of nor hindrance toward the Ban on Experimental Breeding." He smiled congenially at the Gryffindor. "But even if they had known about it, I have a feeling their creatures would have been exempt since they're harmless little fuzzballs anyway."
He gave Nerf an affectionate pat and looked to the next pair.

"Good answer, Keefer and Ella, and you're correct too. I actually have a full-grown puffskein rolling around in here somewhere....." Williamson trailed off with a look up toward the loft of the barn. "Maybe he'll come down later. He looks and behaves just like these little guys," he petted his Nerf, "but they're somewhat easier to train."
At least that had been his experience with them.
"Anyone else care to share??"

[color=#006633]Professor Williamson finished putting the last little spell on the enclosure containing more than a dozen happy, humming pygmy puffs of every color before stalking over to the doors of the barn.

"This is a really good looking list so far," Williamson nodded approvingly. "Feel free to jot this down, as it will likely be useful when it comes time to do your homework. Then I want you all to partner up and try to answer ONE of the questions on this list. If you can't answer it, GOOD! I want you to think scientifically about the question and come up with some sort of process or method of discovering the answer to your question."
It was like detective work! The stuff of REAL Magizoologists!

Alyssa raised her hand and shared with the class what she and Taylor were doing. "Professor we decided to work on What the Pygmy Puffs ate? We came up with a list of what we thought the Pygmy Puffs would most likely eat and decided to feed it bits. If they rejected it then, we know that they didn't eat it. If they liked it, then we left it on the list.
Text Cut: List of Food that Pygmy Puffs might eat
1. Cookies
2. Leftover tuna sandwich (check)
3. ants
4. lettuce
5. carrots
6. apples
7. chocolate frogs
8. nose boogers
9. spiders
10. hay
11. rats
12. leaves
We first started feeding my Nerfball bits of some leftover tuna sandwich, which he or she seemed to love eating and he or she is still alive, so I think that they are okay with eating that. We were going to start on the next food to feed it when you called us to report back to you."
