Default CoMC/HoM One: Lake Creatures

Its a perfect day for a class outside, and by the lake too! The warm september breeze swept the grounds at the south side of the castle. The location was popular for students who generally liked roaming around outside, but it was not a good place to take notes. Which was probably why Professor Scabior did not look at ease as he stood, holding a quiet conversation with Professor Williamson. The Care of Magical Creatures Professor looked quite fine though, turning away from the conversation to flash a smile at each new student that arrived.

"Just gather around here, and take a seat." Scabior said loudly, pointing to the general grassy area.

OOC: Class hasn't started yet, so feel free to join in! Just please, keep chatting to a minimum. Louisa couldn't help the sliight blush creeping into her cheeks from the nod of approve that Scabior had given her. He might not be her favorite but his opinion and approve was hard to get so she cherished it while she could.

Oh! The name, yes of course. Raising her hand, Louisa answered, "It's called the Black Lake, sir." As to why the name was this, the girl had to pause for a few seconds before offering a totally made-up answer, "And the name can be a sign to its depth. The deeper the water body is, the darker it looks like from the surface. There are already creatures known to be living in it for ages so it can be really vast lake hence a very murky one."

Sky gave a disgusted look as the plumbing was mentioned. There was no way she was swimming in that thing now! Charmed or not!

What was the name of the lake? She didn't know, but she had heard something… "They call it the black lake. Probably because it can look pretty dark at times…"

A ship in harbor is safe — but that is not what ships are built for.

"Isn't it called the Black Lake, sir?" Victoria replied, only half-heartedly. Victoria wasn't so familiar with the Hogwarts things, places, or history, since she had only been at Hogwarts for sometimes. She had hoped that she had given the correct answer to the professor. "Well, no one knows what exactly you'll find in that lake or what you'll end up like in there. Isn't that why they called it the Black Lake?" Again, only guessing.

Scabior was pretty sure that educating the students of Hogwarts was in his job description. Otherwise he was just getting paid to live in a giant castle and do nothing. And WHAT in the world was he going to do with a flower. "...Thank you Miss Neil." He took the daisy and stared at it for a second before shoving it into William's chest. He liked flowers, right?

--------

Scabior cleared his throat loudly, a sign for any little conversations going on to stop. Class had started, and he wasn't going to tolerate students talking over him. "Good morning class. For any of your new students, I am Professor Scabior and this-" He pointed to the overgrown kid by his side."Is the new Care of Magical Creatures Professor, Professor Williamson." Did that clear things up? Yup. Introductions were good. "As you can tell, today's joint History of Magic, and Care of Magical Creatures lesson is outside." He held out his arms, as he stated the obvious.

Hopefully they knew this.

Because if they didn't, Scabior wanted them out of his class as fast as possible.

"Does anyone have any idea, why this is?" Any guesses? What did they think?

Harvey thought about this question.. he then put up his hand "I guess that this is because we are studying a creature today that has made an impact on wizarding history but it is a creature that cannot be inside the castle.." he said and he looked around as he finished giving his answer to see if there was such a creature around.. but nope there was no creature around.. that he could see anyways..

The look that the sixth year gave him did not go unnoticed. Scabior simply gave the girl a hard stare before turning back to the rest of the class.

Scabior watched with interest as he noticed the first year looking around the ground. That was a start. Looking at their surroundings.

"....Not quite Mr. Uronen, though nice job thinking outside the box." The prefect always seemed to do that. He was a tad...weird.

"That's...a good guess." Scabior looked over at William. "Though I doubt Professor Williamson would admit to needing my assistance." He probably did. The man wasn't that smart.

"What we are studying definitely would not be able to fit inside of a classroom." He gave a small smile.

-------------

"Most of your answers have to do with...creatures not blending well in classrooms...which, I can't deny. Though, that isn't exactly why we are outside today."

"Today we aren't studying one specific creature or one moment in history. Our focus today is on-" Scabior jabbed his thumb behind him. "The Hogwarts lake." Yes. The lake. "Obviously we are all familiar with the lake, and if you are not, well, it's right there get familiar with it- perhaps even introduce yourself to it." But not NOW because then you would be talking over him. "The lake has been a part of Hogwarts since the castle was created 1,000 years ago. Now why do you think, the founders included a lake within Hogwarts? And how do you guys think it has been used in the past?"

Harvey thought about this question too.. he was determined to gain some points for this class.. he put up his hand "I think that they included the lake so that creatures that thrive in water are able to be a part of Hogwarts allowing us to study them without having us leave the safe haven of the school and its enchantments.. " he answered the question to the best of his ability

SPOILER!!: Creatures People

"All good answers, yes." He nodded

"Your theory makes sense…" But that's all it was, a theory, and so it was wrong. Or could be wrong.

"No. The Muggles are ignorant to Hogwarts because of all the charms and spells that are on it. If anything, building a giant castle next to an important source of water would make Muggles suspicious and probably end up killing a bunch of them because their water source was cut off." He smiled. Happy Miss Stone?

Scabior looking to Williamson then shrugged. "That's a good guess, yeah."

Dash nodded, catching on to what was being said "…And animals need water, and so the lake supplies that." That's where she was getting at right? Either way, what she said made said. He smiled at her.

"Correct, traveling could have been an issue, another means of escape or enter if deemed fit." He nodded.

"Yes." He nodded. Like someone before had said right?

Dash nodded but gave a skeptical look soon after. "You are correct on most parts, though I doubt the lake was purposely created to help aid the flooding of Hogwarts." Just a little note there, if that was what she meant.

"Correct, back when Hogwarts was founded, a large body of water could be deemed dangerous. No one could really know what resisted in it."

Scabior raised a brow. "So what you are saying Miss Greingoth and Miss Reed is that the Hogwarts founders included the lake while creating this glorious school to hide and protect students of Salazar's Slytherins house and yet leave all other students unprotected?" He snorted. He liked the idea…sadly, no. "Nice try."

He blinked, slightly confused, just as the first year was it seemed. "I'm not sure you understood the question Miss Penta."

"Right you two are! The tradition of first years arriving to hogwarts on boats is a major way that the lake has been used in the past and even presently." Good job.

"Right, it was used negatively then." He nodded.

…This girl was weird. Ravenclaws. Was he actually suppose to answer her? "Right….I'll try to dig those up for you Miss Odessa." Dig up the non-existent transcripts.

That, was a whole bunch of information just shot right at him. And Scabior wasn't able to grasp any of it. "Please Miss Potter…learn how to take pauses when you are speaking." But she got a nod too because….something had to be right out of all the things she said.

"It was here." He said with a sigh

A different spin on things. Scabior smiled. "Makes perfect sense Miss Riddle." Good job.

Scabior gave the boy a nod. "That makes sense to me Mr Gert." Which meant that he could have been right.

"No. I just said that we were studying the lake." He eyed the Ravenclaw, tempted to take points for her lack of attention.

"They didn't make the lake. They included it."

Wow. Scabior just looked at the kid and chuckled. "Who wouldn't want a lake indeed."

He nodded in agreement, the creatures were important.

"Used just like how it is now then you mean?" He nodded.

"I doubt the mermaids would want to meet the students." Though he wasn't an expert in Magical Creatures, APPARENTLY that was Williamson, so the man had better say in this.

[B]"A real home." He repeated. "I would surely hope that your house does not include a lake inside."

"That could keep the Ministry away.." Huh. Interesting. Sadly if that was true, it didn't work now.

SPOILER!!: Safe

"Right, as a means of safely, having a lake sounds pretty smart."

"So they included a lake to make the Slytherin Common Room look creepy." He repeated the boys words, just so he could hear how ridiculous it actually sounded.

"Thats what the enchantments are for." Scabior said shaking his head.

"…." Scabior just stared.

"Not quite. Not only because of them."

"Of course there is life in the lake." He said, slightly annoyed. That didn't even need to be stated.

Lake to hold water? Scabior chuckled. "But yes, it was already here when they built Hogwarts."

Scabior just stared at the young boy. "You Mr Bellaire. Please do not have any sweets before coming to any of my classes."

"It could have been sure." Though, they probably didn't drink right form the lake.

"Noonono." Sigh. First years. "They didn't make the lake. They included it." He would explain after.

SPOILER!!: Plumbing

Scabior just nodded his head at the few people who said something about plumbing issues.

-----------

"To clear somethings up, the founders did not make the lake." He looked toward a few first years who were asking. "I said they included it. Meaning, that when they set out to find a place to build Hogwarts they, decided early on to build the castle in an area that included a lake."

He nodded. Hopefully they understood now. "So really, your guesses are as good as mine. Could have been for the creatures to study in classes, or for the protection of the students. What is know about the main inclusion of the lake is that the founders did find it important to somehow be supplied to a fresh source of water, and this is why like a handful of you mentioned." He nodded at those people. "All Hogwarts plumping runs through the lake." He paused. "But don't worry, there are charms, set upon the lake to make sure that all the water in it, and all the water that we obtain is clean."

"Over the years the lake has been used for much more than just a source in which the plumbing runs through. It has been used for transportation, recreational, educational purposes and even that one time during the Triwizard Tournament as a task." He nodded. You guys did not have to write any of this down. But you had to REMEMBER. It was easy enough.

"The lake has a general name associated with it, do any one know what this is? For those of you who know what the name is it, any guesses as to why it was giving this name?" They didn't have to answer both questions, only one. Whatever they wanted really.

Harvey put up his hand "The general name given to the lake is The Black Lake.. and I guess this could be because of the dark color of the lake and the fact that it is dark and murky down there or so I have heard.." he answered maybe there were other reasons that it was called the Black Lake but he had no idea what they were.

Autumn thought for a bit and looked at the lake.." Professor, is it refferd to as the black lake? Because of its depth, mirkiness and inability to see far into it, no one really knows what exactly is residing in the depth of the lake, this is a mystery and black is a mysterious colour, so it could be a nickname students had just thought off and it has travveled through the generation sticking."

WHOO! Mia had a good guess as to why the founders had built the castle right by the lake. She was doing good so far. :3

Raising her hand she said, "It's called the Black Lake, Professor. Maybe because it looks dark? Black like?" o_O She had no idea where else the name could have come from.

Minerva put up her hand "Professors the lake is called the Black Lake, I am not completely sure why it's called this, but could it be because when the founders first built Hogwarts they were not sure what things were in the lake so black could represent the unknown." She didn't think there was anything wrong with taking a guess.

Funnily enough, Kimalia's home did have a lake.. just not inside her home. Just another shrug for an incorrect guess, since he did admit to not knowing the reason for a lake anyways. Next question.. oh, time to raise hand again. "It's the Black Lake, it could be called that to signify how unknown the lake is beneath."

"It is called the Black Lake." He nodded. "Though, I am not quite sure if Merpeople and Grinfilow dislike light-William?" He looked toward the big-kid-professor who was sitting now on the ground.

Maybe first years get frightened and black out when they see Mr. Henry on their boat ride to the school and it happens so often that they found it to be a fitting name!"

...But, due to Mr. Henry's kind nature, Max figured it was due to the the dark color of the lake. It WAS quite deep.
"No. It is actually a pretty old name." A few hundred years old at least. [B]"But first years being scared does have something to do with it. He smiled.

When Professor Scabior posed a question, Eino pondered before raising his hand and speaking. "Well, Hogwarts isn't entirely inaccessible to Muggles, since we do have a keep-away sign to prevent them from venturing further. It could be that the Black Lake receives its name due to how dark it is, perhaps as a result of a charm, to prevents muggles from seeing any magical creatures, such as merpeople, grindylows, and the giant squid, should they come just a little too close." Eino said very matter-of-factly, looking from the professor to the lake, then back at Professor Scabior. Maybe as a precaution, or maybe it was just... very dirty?
"That would be an understandable reason." He gave a nod toward the Ravenclaw Prefect. "However I believe the lake still encompasses charms which would drive Muggles away, and so they would not even have the chance to see any magical creatures if the lake was not so dark." Scabior was impressed by the answer though.

"Yes it is." And nice guess too. "Usually the deeper a body of water is the bluer it looks due the the reflection of the sky." Not black though.

What was the name of the lake? She didn't know, but she had heard something… "They call it the black lake. Probably because it can look pretty dark at times…"

"And I don't know if the students named it." He added for Autumn's answer. They probably did. Hm.

"Scaring is a reason behind the colour ." Nod.

"As most of you started the lake is known as the black lake." Nod. "And many of your guesses are right. It is known as this because of its dark murky colour when looked at on land. Underneath its more of a dark greenish colour." Though it was still murky if you went low enough.

"The water isn't dark because it's dirty." He looked around, daring anyone to say he was wrong. Like he had said before, there were CHARMS placed on the lake to ensure its cleanliness. "It is dark because, just like the forbidden forrest, the lake can be dangerous. The four founders cast spells on the lake to make it unappealing for younger unknowing children to just jump in, to prevent any attack from creatures." And for the most part that worked over the years. "And the name just....fell into place. Maybe by some students." That wasn't recorded.

"Now, there are things other than creatures that are rumoured to be under the lake. Does anyone have any guess to what these things might be?" NOT creatures. Creatures were certainly not things.

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

"It's called the Black Lake," Jezzabelle said raising her hand. "And it was probably named that because it goes down pretty deep so you can't really get a good filtration of light. Or there could be an enchantment on the lake that makes it black, which would hide the creatures below so that, if the school were under attack, the attackers wouldn't see the creatures below." That was one big speculation as to why the lake was called the Black Lake.

be curious, not judgmental

So Max had been very close to being correct. Boy, he was full of luck with his abundant, wild answers today. He might as well keep rolling with it, even if he wasn't sure. Speculation was still good, so his hand was back in the air.

"You mean things like underground caverns, or hidden cities? Buried treasure?" His eyes glinted as the gears turned in his head. Who knew what was down there? "Secret, hidden tunnels for transportation out of the school grounds?" Now, he knew that wouldn't have been very safe. If outsiders could enter school grounds through a tunnel in the lake, that would cause a lot of security problems. However, if it was a secret tunnel no one could locate, then it would certainly be a rumor, then, wouldn't it?

Minerva put her hand up "Well water plants would be most likely be in the lake." she thought about saying the mermaid people, but thought that they were probably considered creatures even thought they had some human looks to them.

Carigan didn't really know what else could be in the lake besides creatures... maybe "Plants? There would be underwater plants surely!" Carigan ventured as a guess.

Amelia was thoughtful now as she tried to think of an answer. She raised her hand. "Plant life? Such as algae and the like." Algae liked to live in water. Oooh. "And maybe things like underground caverns!" That would be sooo cool to explore.

It was certianaly true that it kept small children away, she remembered not liking the lake as a first year because it.looked gross, and that was saying.something.because she.usually played in the river by.her house. But it had something.besides.creatures? Raising her hand, she answered Are there under caves or somethinglike a treasure. Or maybe magical artifacts that work in water. What ever it was, she hoped it was exciting.

Let's see there's Squids, merpeople, Moaning Myrtle occasionally.. But what else? Plants? That sure sounded like a unique answer. What about.. raising hand once again. "There is Chamber of Secrets that is are thought to be below."

Selena thought about the question carefully. Other than creatures under the lake? "Plants, homes, and treasure?" Selena offered. Because those things weren't creatures... and there was, according to people, a pirate ship here... so there was probably treasure right? Oh wait. "And the Slytherin Common Room," she added. Because... it was under the lake.

Things under the lake? OH! Louisa almost jumped in her seat as she raised her hand, "There was a haunted ship surfacing on the lake two years ago, sir." When he wasn't here. Ahem. "Spirits of pirates occupied it until one point they made it to the castle." Careful not to drift off in her tale-telling, and making her best not to look around at the firsties to see what her story was making to their wittle faces, Louisa went on, "That could be a proof of haunted realms deep down. Maybe more haunted boats or ships are down there." Uh-huh. He could ask Professor Vindictus, he wouldn't disagree with Louisa.
